Abstract

PURPOSE:: To achieve clinical validation of cutoff values for newborn screening by tandem mass spectrometry through a worldwide collaborative effort. METHODS:: Cumulative percentiles of amino acids and acylcarnitines in dried blood spots of approximately 25-30 million normal newborns and 10,742 deidentified true positive cases are compared to assign clinical significance, which is achieved when the median of a disorder range is, and usually markedly outside, either the 99th or the 1st percentile of the normal population. The cutoff target ranges of analytes and ratios are then defined as the interval between selected percentiles of the two populations. When overlaps occur, adjustments are made to maximize sensitivity and specificity taking all available factors into consideration. RESULTS:: As of December 1, 2010, 130 sites in 45 countries have uploaded a total of 25,114 percentile data points, 565,232 analyte results of true positive cases with 64 conditions, and 5,341 cutoff values. The average rate of submission of true positive cases between December 1, 2008, and December 1, 2010, was 5.1 cases/day. This cumulative evidence generated 91 high and 23 low cutoff target ranges. The overall proportion of cutoff values within the respective target range was 42% (2,269/5,341). CONCLUSION:: An unprecedented level of cooperation and collaboration has allowed the objective definition of cutoff target ranges for 114 markers to be applied to newborn screening of rare metabolic disorders. © 2011 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Abstract

Using the FOCUS spectrometer (experiments 687 and 831 at Fermilab) we confirm the existence of a diffractively photoproduced enhancement in K^+K^- at 1750 MeV/c^2 with nearly 100 times the statistics of previous experiments. We also observe a narrow dip structure at 1.9 GeV/c2 in a study of diffractive photoproduction of the 3π^+3π^- final state.

Abstract

We present a summary of recent results on CP violation and mixing in the charm quark sector based on a high statistics sample collected by photoproduction experiment FOCUS (E831 at Fermilab). We have measured the difference in lifetimes for the D0 decays: D0→K−π+ and D0→K−K+. This translates into a measurement of the yCP mixing parameter in the $\d0d0$ system, under the assumptions that K−K+ is an equal mixture of CP odd and CP even eigenstates, and CP violation is negligible in the neutral charm meson system. We verified the latter assumption by searching for a CP violating asymmetry in the Cabibbo suppressed decay modes D+→K−K+π+, D0→K−K+ and D0→π−π+. We show preliminary results on a measurement of the branching ratio Γ(D∗+→π+(K+π−))/Γ(D∗+→π+(K−π+)).

We report the preliminary measurement by the FOCUS Collaboration (E831 at Fermilab) of masses and widths of the L=1 charm mesons D*^+_2 and D*^+_2 . The fit of the invariant mass distribution requires an additional term to account for a broad structure over background.

Abstract

A new measurement of the Σ + magnetic moment is reported. The measurement stems from 12 000 events of the reaction K − p→ Σ + π − produced at beam momenta around 460 MeV/ c in HYBUC, the hydrogen bubble chamber with an 11.5 T magnetic field. These events represent about 15% of the final statistics. The results from opposite field directions are in close agreement and yield an average value of 2.95 ± 0.31 nuclear magnetons for the total Σ + magnetic moment.

Abstract

Measurements are presented for σ − production and decay angular distributions in the reaction K − p → σ − π + at beam momenta of 430, 453, 473 and 493 MeV/ c . The behaviour of the σ − polarization is compared with the predictions of two partial wave analyses. The σ − decay asymmetry parameter and σ − magnetic moment are found to be α − = −0.062 ± 0.024 and μ σ − = −0.71 ± 1.25 nuclear magnetons, respectively.

Abstract

We study the reactions pd→(p s ) pp π − , pp π + π − , pd→(p s ) pp π − π − π + and pp→pp π + π − π + π − at approximately 28 GeV/ c , as examples of one, two, three- and four-pion production, respectively. One-pion production occurs mainly as the fragmentation or excitation of the target neutron into a low-mass (p π − ) cluster. Likewise, the two-pion production is seen to be mainly the production of a low-mass (p π + π − ) cluster recoiling opposite the remaining proton. For three- and four-pion production, clustering of particles is much less obvious; nevertheless, the data may be interpreted as showing that single excitation is still the dominant process as in the Nova model of Jacob and Slansky. The technique for examining cluster production involves examining the distribution of rapidities of final-state particles. However, it must be realized that the reactions studied represent only the lowest multiplicities at 28 GeV/ c and that particle production in general at this momentum cannot be assumed to be represented by the low-multiplicity channels studied here. The production of secondaries as a result of cluster formation is an attractive model but our analysis shows that, except for the lowest multiplicities, it is certainly not a unique description of the data.
