Abstract

Size-based analyses of marine animals are increasingly used to improve understanding of community structure and function. However, the resources required to record individual body weights for benthic animals, where the number of individuals can reach several thousand in a square metre, are often prohibitive. Here we present morphometric (length–weight) relationships for 216 benthic species from the North Sea to permit weight estimation from length measurements. These relationships were calculated using data collected over two years from 283 stations. For ten abundant and widely dispersed species we tested for significant spatial and temporal differences in morphometric relationships. Some were found, but the magnitude of differences was small in relation to the size-ranges of animals that are usually present and we recommend that the regression relationships given here, based on pooled data, are appropriate for most types of population and community analyses. Our hope is that the availability of these morphometric relationships will encourage the more frequent application of size-based analyses to benthic survey data, and so enhance understanding of the ecology of the benthic/demersal component of marine ecosystems and food webs.

Abstract

Electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the electron-positron collider LEP at CERN from 1995 to 2000 are reported. The combined data set considered in this report corresponds to a total luminosity of about 3fb-1 collected by the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130GeV to 209GeV. Combining the published results of the four LEP experiments, the measurements include total and differential cross-sections in photon-pair, fermion-pair and four-fermion production, the latter resulting from both double-resonant W W and Z Z production as well as singly resonant production. Total and differential cross-sections are measured precisely, providing a stringent test of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies never explored before in electron-positron collisions. Final-state interaction effects in four-fermion production, such as those arising from colour reconnection and Bose-Einstein correlations between the two W decay systems arising in W W production, are searched for and upper limits on the strength of possible effects are obtained. The data are used to determine fundamental properties of the W boson and the electroweak theory. Among others, the mass and width of the W boson, mW and ΓW, the branching fraction of W decays to hadrons, B (W → had), and the trilinear gauge-boson self-couplings g1 Z, κγ and λγ are determined to be: mW=80.376±0.033GeV ΓW=2.195±0.083GeV B(W→had)=67.41±0.27% g1 Z=0.9840+0.018 -0.020 κγ=0.982±0.042λγ=-0.022±0.019. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

3. The effects of experimental scallop dredging on the fauna and physical environment of a shallow sandy community

Abstract

An experimental dredging operation was carried out in a small sandy bay in Scotland, with the aim of quantitatively assessing the effects of scallop dredging on the benthic fauna and the physical environment. An area within the 10-m depth contour was selected; a 1.2-m modified scallop dredge was operated at frequencies of 2, 4, 12 and 25 dredges, carried out over a period of nine days. The effects on the bottom topography, the physical characteristics of the sediment and the fauna were investigated by grab and core sampling, and direct observations were carried out by a diving team. Observed changes in bottom topography were not translated into changes in the disposition of the sediments, their grade distribution and the organic carbon and chlorophyll content, all of which showed no effects. The infaunal community, which consisted of bivalve molluscs and peracarid crustaceans, both taxa adapted morphologically and behaviourally to a dynamic environment, did not show any significant changes in abundance or biomass. Sessile forms such as polychaetes showed a noticeable decrease, and the burrowing spatangid Echinocardium was substantially reduced from the dredged area. Corresponding changes in the biomass of the different taxa were also evident but not significant. However, the most important effect of this experiment was on the epifaunal and large infaunal organisms recorded by the divers. Large numbers of molluscs (Ensis), echinoderms (Asterias) and crustaceans (Cancer) were killed or damaged by the dredging operations. Very large concentrations of the burrowing sand eel Ammodytes were also destroyed. The overall conclusion to be drawn from this experimental dredging operation is that its effect was limited tot he selective elimination of a fraction of the fragile and sedentary components of the infauna, and the destruction of the large epifaunal and infaunal organisms.

Abstract

The impact of fishing for razor clams ( Ensis sp.) by hydraulic dredging on the associated infaunal community has been examined in a manipulative field experiment executed in autumn in a Scottish sea loch at 7 m depth. Infaunal samples from replicate fished and unfished plots were examined after 1 and 40 days. Major effects on the total number of individuals were observed immediately after fishing and sign test revealed a reduction in the abundance of a significant proportion of species in fished areas. However, after 40 (mostly stormy) days no effects of fishing could be detected and no visible signs of fishing remained on the sea bed. We hypothesize that active migration into the water column and passive suspension during wind- and tide-induced sediment transport dilute localized effects and conclude that, given the restricted depth at which fishing is possible at present, hydraulic dredging is unlikely to have persistent effects on most of the infaunal community in most habitats. The effects on long-lived bivalve species could, however, be more serious.

Abstract

The four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have searched for the neutral Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The data of the four collaborations are statistically combined and examined for their consistency with the background hypothesis and with a possible Higgs boson signal. The combined LEP data show no significant excess of events which would indicate the production of Higgs bosons. The search results are used to set upper bounds on the cross-sections of various Higgs-like event topologies. The results are interpreted within the MSSM in a number of "benchmark" models, including CP-conserving and CP-violating scenarios. These interpretations lead in all cases to large exclusions in the MSSM parameter space. Absolute limits are set on the parameter tan β and, in some scenarios, on the masses of neutral Higgs bosons.

Abstract

The four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have collected a total of 2461 pb−1 of e+ e− collision data at centre-of-mass energies between189 and 209 GeV. The data are used to search for the Standard Model Higgs boson. The search results of the four collaborations are combined and examined in a likelihood test for their consistency with two hypotheses: the background hypothesis and the signal plus background hypothesis. The corresponding confidences have been computed as functions of the hypothetical Higgs boson mass. A lower bound of114.4 GeV/c2 is established, at the 95% confidence level, on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson. The LEP data are also used to set upper bounds on the HZZ coupling for various assumptions concerning the decay of the Higgs boson. © 2016, Elsevier. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The Army is developing architectures to introduce new digital command, control, and communications to the 21st century warfighter. A key element in the systems architecture development is characterizing the information exchange requirements for these digitization products. The Combined Arms Command and Control (CAC2) Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) has developed automated tools to allow subject matter experts (SMEs) within different domains to identify mission thread and information requirements based on a given warfighting scenario. The automated tools are based on commercially available software products. This paper describes the automation elements that comprise the CAC2 ATD operational requirements analysis (ORA) process. Key elements include an automated graphical user interface (GUI) that facilitates creation and annotation of mission threads which identify operational facilities, connectivity, and communications network affiliation. The IDEF, or Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing Definition, is used to baseline and evaluate process and data architectures. The IDEF modeling methodology provides a means to study and document C2 processes and data flow among users in the overall Force XXI C3I architecture. The CECOM System Performance Model (SPM) is used to evaluate candidate communications architectures based on the mission exchange needs collected in the ORA exercises. The modeling tools consist of integrated C2 process, radio/network protocol, and radio propagation modules which together identify network bottlenecks, availability delays, message blocking, and other parameters.

Abstract

The experimental addition of different concentrations of sewage sludge to clean marine deposits resulted in a degradation of the sediments and a modified benthic macrofauna. The addition of a large amount of sludge (100 l·m −2 ·a −1 ) resulted in a sparse Capitella dominated fauna of low density and high biomass. The lower amount (50 l·m −2 ·a −1 ) allowed the presence of a normal fauna but of an enhanced abundance and biomass. Though recovery was good there was evidence that the addition of large amounts of sludge had lasting toxic effects. Comparisons of the results of these experiments with the effects observed in sludge dumping grounds are made and the significance of the different input levels in a marine ecosystem is discussed.

Abstract

We reviewed retrospectively 75 renal transplant arteriograms done during a 7-year period. Acute rejection and vasomotor nephropathy were not differentiated. Generalized cortical ischemia was diagnosed correctly in 23 of 30 cases but there were 7 falsely negative results. Renal artery stenosis was found in 7 of 17 cases in which the main indication for arteriography was hypertension. We conclude that the major role of transplant arteriography is in the diagnosis of larger vessel disease.

Abstract

Malignant skin tumours are more common following renal transplants. Squamous cell carcinomas (S.C.C.) are increased, in contrast to B.C.C. Kerato acanthomas (K.A.) were increased and showed a marked tendency to recur and appeared more aggressive than S.C.C.’s. Azathioprinc appears to be more likely to cause skin cancer than chlorambucil. This increase in skin epitheliomas may be due to a failure of endonuclease repair of DNA. Psoriatics appear to be less likely to develop these lesions.
