1. Augmentation of ruptured tendon using fresh frozen Achilles tendon allograft in two dogs: a case report

Abstract

This article describes two cases of augmentation of ruptured tendon with fresh frozen Achilles tendon allograft (FFATA) in dogs. Case 1 was a two-year-old crossbreed dog (29 kg) that presented with an open wound on the right forelimb and with complete rupture of the flexor carpi ulnaris and superficial digital flexor tendons. Case 2 was a four-year-old crossbreed dog (4 kg) with partial ruptures of the patellar tendon and detachment of the tibial tuberosity in the right hind limb. In both cases, the ends of the ruptured tendon were sutured and apposed after debridement. To minimize suture failure, FFATA (cut to sufficient size) was placed across the primary suture with tension and sutured to the host tendon. In addition, Case 2 received a Krackow suture through a transverse bone tunnel made in the tibia to fix the patellar tendon along with the tibial tuberosity in situ. The surgical areas healed without any evidence of exaggerated inflammatory response or clinical signs consistent with rejection of the allograft. Both the dogs had normal ambulation and weight bearing on the affected limb 12 weeks postoperatively. No postoperative complications were observed during a one-year follow up period except for slight contracture of the carpus and digits of the affected limb in Case 1. Thus, ruptured tendons can be successfully repaired using suture and augmentation with FFCTA. Augmentation with FFATA may provide additional stability, which counters tension on the primary repair and reduces the chance of gap formation or suture failure in case of reconstruction of the damaged tendon in dogs.

2. Effects of Chitosan-oligosaccharide on diarrhoea in Hanwoo calves

Abstract

The therapeutic effect of Chitosan-oligosaccharide (COS) on calf diarrhoea was investigated in Korean native (Hanwoo) calves (n = 86). The calves were divided into two groups; the untreated/control (n = 40) having routine diet only and the treated group (n = 46) receiving COS (50 ml/day) in addition to the routine diet for five days. Blood samples from each animal were collected before and after five days treatment and were subjected to complete blood count (CBC), chemistry screening (CS) and plasma protein assay (PPA). The in vitro efficacy of COS against the most common causal agents of calf diarrhoea (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium) was evaluated. Among the CBC parameters a significantly higher total red blood cell count (tRBC), haemoglobin (Hb) and packed cell volume (PCV) were noticed in the untreated group. In the CS parameters higher levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine and total bilirubin (TBL), and lower glucose were found in the untreated group. Significantly higher levels of albumin and α-globulin along with lower γ-globulin were noted in the untreated group. Among the treated group 41 (out of 46) calves recovered completely from diarrhoea and in the untreated group five calves (out of 40) spontaneously recovered after five days, revealing that the COS has a good therapeutic effect on diarrhoea in calves. The COS was found to effectively inhibit bacterial growth and pathogenicity up to 1:64 and 1:256 dilutions in the case of S. typhimurium and E. coli respectively. The results of this study revealed that the levels of different parameters of CBC (tRBC, Hb, PCV), CS (BUN, creatinine, TBL) and PPA (albumin, α-globulin, γ-globulin) profiles can reflect the severity of diarrhoea and dehydration and that COS can be successfully used for the clinical management of diarrhoea in Hanwoo calves.

3. Treatment of an infected total knee replacement with two-stage arthrodesis in a dog: a case report

Abstract

A three-year-old intact female Great Pyrenees underwent total knee replacement for the treatment of osteoarthritis. The dog contracted septic arthritis 10 weeks following the procedure. Treatments including implant subtraction, debridement of tissue, and insertion of bone cement with antibiotics into the joint space were completed in the joint cavity. A temporary external skeletal fixator was used to stabilise the joint for four weeks. A second attempt at total knee replacement failed due to severe muscle contracture and bone loss. Therefore, it was decided to perform arthrodesis as a salvage procedure. At the 17 month follow-up examination, the patient was able to use the limb while standing and at all gait speeds. Based on these findings, two-stage arthrodesis can be a viable salvage procedure for infected total knee replacements.

4. Surgical model of osteoarthritis secondary to medial patellar luxation in dogs

Abstract

This study was performed to make a surgical model of osteoarthritis (OA) in the dog. Experimental medial patellar luxation (MPL) was surgically produced in the left stifle (index) of 24 skeletally mature mixed small breed dogs (age two to six years and weight 2.8 to 9 kg). The animals were randomly allocated in 2 groups; sham group (n = 12), where the right stifle was sham operated and control group (n = 12) with intact right stifle. Physical and radiographic examinations of both stifles were performed at 1.5 months intervals over a one-year experimental period. One dog was euthanatized every three months, and both stifles were explored, gross examination was performed and tissue samples from the articular cartilage, cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) and synovium were collected for histomorphology. The clinical signs of OA were obvious in the experimental dogs by 12 weeks of surgical induction of MPL, which was also evidenced in the histopathology of the joint tissues and electron microscopy of the articular cartilage. The radiographic changes of OA were not obvious until remarkable degenerative changes became abvious six months postoperatively. Surgically induced MPL can be a successful tool for experimental induction of OA in dogs.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine if the activity of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) in the synovial fluid (SF) and serum can be used as a marker for diagnosing the early stages of osteoarthritis (OA). We also wished to determine if identifiable differences in the concentrations of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) could be detected in SF between normal joints and OA joints for the diagnosis of early OA. Ten skeletally mature beagle dogs underwent a unilateral surgical transection of the cranial cruciate ligament and medial meniscectomy. Five sham-operated beagle dogs were used as controls. The synovial fluid was collected in 1, 2 and 3 months and examined by western blotting for MMP-2 and ELISA for TIMP-2. The activity of TRAP in the SF and serum was measured using a spectrophotometer. In addition, the presence of TRAP positive cells in the synovium was identified by enzyme histochemistry. The level of the activity of TRAP and MMP-2 in the SF from the induced OA dogs was significantly higher than that of the control over a three-month period (P < 0.05). The TIMP-2 level in the SF was significantly lower in the induced OA dogs than in the control. However, there was no difference in TRAP activity in the serum. Histochemistry revealed a higher number of TRAP positive cells in the synovium from the induced OA dogs. Based on these data, we conclude that the activity of TRAP, MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in SF can be used as a biomarker to diagnose and monitor the early stages of OA.

6. Reconstruction of the oesophagus using pedicle diaphragm and omentum flaps in a dog: a case report

Abstract

A two-years-old, intact female, Shih-Tzu dog weighing 5 kg was presented to the Chonbuk Animal Medical Centre, College of Veterinary Medicine, Chonbuk National University, with the history of bone ingestion before two days. The survey radiographs of the thorax revealed a bone at the caudal thoracic oesophagus. An oesophagram was performed which did not reveal any oesophageal leakage or perforation. The left caudolateral thoracotomy was performed and the caudal oesophagus was found partially necrosed, friable and inflamed. The necrosed, friable part was removed and the oesophageal defect was reconstructed using a full-thickness muscle flap collected from the diaphragm. A part of the omentum was mobilized from the abdomen and sutured over the reconstructed site of the oesophagus to aid healing. Oesophagoscopy after nine days postoperatively showed a good adhesion of the diaphragm flap. The patient showed normal activity after 12 days and no complications were observed during a one-year follow up period. The pedicle flap collected from the left hemidiaphragm in addition to the omentum flap can be successfully used to reconstruct the circumferential oesophageal defect.

7. Supernumerary ectopic limbs in Korean indigenous cattle: four case reports

Abstract

Four head of Korean indigenous cattle were presented to the Chonbuk Animal Medical Centre, Chonbuk National University, with the complaint of the presence of extra limb(s) since birth. The accessory limb(s) were underdeveloped in all the cases and attached to the lateral side of the withers craniodorsal to the right scapula in Case 1 and 2; in Case 3, right dorsally to the 4th cervical vertebra and in Case 4 it was ventrolateral to the thorax caudally to the right forelimb. In all the cases, the congenital anomaly was diagnosed as the presence of supernumerary ectopic limb(s) (SEL), which were removed by surgical excisions under general anaesthesia. In all the cases, the surgical corrections resulted in normal locomotion and better quality of life. No postoperative complications were observed during a 1-year follow up period. The SEL can be successfully removed by surgical excisions, which can result in normal locomotion and better aesthesis of the animal.

Abstract

Three Cocker Spaniel dogs, 2-3 months old, weighing 3-4 kg, were presented to the Chonbuk Animal Medical Centre, Chonbuk National University, with intersex anomalies. Physical, radiological, gross, histological, hormonal and cytogenetic studies were performed. Physical examination of the external genitalia revealed that the dogs possessed the vulva with an enlarged clitoris protruding from the vulvar juncture and the scrotum with an undescended testis in Case 1 and 2, and both testes remained undescended in Case 3. Hyperoestrogenaemia and low testosterone serum concentrations were found. Laparotomy revealed persistent Mullerian ducts (PMD) in Case 1 and 2, and abdominally located testicle(s) in all the cases. Histological examinations of the gonads revealed inactive seminiferous tubules. Cytogenetic analysis showed 78XY male karyotype in Case 1 and 2, whereas Case 3 showed 79XX female karyotype. The congenital defects were diagnosed as male pseudohermaphroditism (MPH) and PMD in Case 1 and 2, and XX sex reversal MPH in Case 3.

9. Persistent right aortic arch and aberrant left subclavian artery in a dog: a case report

Abstract

A 10-week-old, 4.5 kg female Weimaraner dog was referred to theChonbukNationalUniversity, Animal Medical Centre with signs of regurgitation after weaning. The cervical oesophagus was palpable as a flaccid, air-filled cavity. The thoracic radiographs revealed oesophageal dilatation cranial to the heart and constriction at the level of third rib. A presumptive diagnosis was made as persistent right aortic arch (PRAA). A left 4th intercostal thoracotomy was performed and the definitive diagnosis was made as PRAA with left ligamentum arteriosum (LA) and an aberrant left subclavian artery (SA). The oesophagus was found dually compressed and severely necrosed. The corrective surgery comprised of transection of the LA as well as resection and anastomosis of the oesophagus, which resulted in a complete alleviation of the clinical signs.

A 9-month-old 10 kg intact male crossbred dog was admitted to The Animal Medical Centre,ChonbukNationalUniversitywith congenitally malformed right forelimb. Physical exanimation of the limb showed varus deviation of the forepaw and flexion contracture of the interphalangeal joints. The survey radiographs revealed complete absence of the radius, poor congruency of the humeroulnar joint and 90° varus deviation of the ulnocarpal joint. A preaxial longitudinal intercalary radial hemimelia was diagnosed and the dog underwent 3 surgeries for correction of the deformity. During the first surgery, olecranon osteotomy and arthrodesis of the elbow were performed. Three months later, a second surgery was done to perform carpal panarthrodesis using bone plate and screws which was unsuccessful. Two weeks after, with a third surgery carpal arthrodesis was performed using acrylic frame, the distal portion of limb was straightened and the residual deviation of the forepaw was corrected. The surgical corrections resulted in satisfactory use of the limb and a better quality of life.

11. Hypospadias in three calves: a case report

Abstract

Two to three weeks old 3 male indigenous Korean calves weighing 35-40 kg were referred to the Animal Medical Centre,ChonbukNationalUniversitywith signs of urine scalding on the ventral perineum. Physical examination in all 3 cases revealed aplasia of the penis along with an undescended testis, bifid scrotum and ventrally incomplete sheath. In case 1, the urethra opened cranially to the bifid scrotum, whereas in case 2 and 3, the urethra opened at the ventral perineum. The diagnosis was made as hypospadias, along with penile aplasia and unilateral cryptorchidism. With an exploratory laparotomy, the abdominal testis was removed. The scrotal testis was also castrated and scrotal ablation was performed. In case 1, prescrotal urethrostomy and in case 2 and 3, perineal urethrostomy was performed. Two weeks after surgical correction, the caves appeared to be urinating normally.

Abstract

This study was carried to compare the effects of ketamine and xylazine-ketamine combination on clinical and haematobiochemical parameters in captive rhesus monkey. The animals were divided into two groups; one ketamine (K) group and other xylazine-ketamine (XK) group. In ketamine group (n=6) atropine sulphate and ketamine was used intramuscularly at the rate of 0.04 mg/kg body weight and 10 mg/ kg body weight respectively. In xylazine-ketamine group (n=3) xylazine and ketamine was used intramuscularly at the rate of 1 mg/kg body weight and 5 mg/kg body weight respectively. Blood samples were collected immediately after induction and 30 min after induction in both groups. Effects of anaesthetics on haematological and biochemical parameters such as TEC, TLC, Hb, PCV, DLC, serum cholesterol, serum triglyceride, HDL and LDL and clinical parameters such as rectal temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, muscle relaxation, jaw tone, pedal reflex, palpebral reflex and position of eye ball were studied. Rectal temperature was significantly lower (P0.05). Hb and PCV level was significantly lower (P0.05). Neutrophil and Eosinophil was higher in group XK than in group K but it was nonsignificant (P>0.05). Lymphocyte was lower in group XK than in group K but it was nonsignificant (P>0.05). Monocyte was significantly lower (P0.05). Serum triglyceride and LDL was significantly higher (P0.05). Smooth induction was found in group XK and duration of anaesthesia was longer in group XK whereas smooth recovery was found in group K but duration of anaesthesia was shorter. Muscle relaxation was excellent in group XK in comparison to group K. It can be suggested from the results of this study that for shorter duration of anaesthesia only ketamine can be used but for longer duration, xylazine-ketamine combination will be appropriate.

Abstract

Bovine genital campylobacteriosis caused by Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis (Cfv) is of considerable economic importance to the cattle industry worldwide. Cfv causes syndrome of temporary infertility in female cattle, early embryonic mortality, aberrant oestrus cycles, delayed conception, abortions and poor calving rates. In the present study, a total of 200 samples obtained from vaginal swabs, cervicovaginal mucous (CVM), preputial washes and semen straws were investigated that were obtained from organized cattle farm of MLRI, Manasbal and unorganized sectors. Out of a total of 200 samples, 49 (47·57%) vaginal swabs, 1 (3·33%) preputial wash and 8 (25%) carried out CVM samples were positive for Cfv, whereas none of the semen straws were positive for Cfv. A total of eleven isolates of Cfv were recovered. PFGE (Pulse field gel electrophoresis) analysis revealed four different pulsotypes (I-IV) circulating in the screened farms. A common pulsotype circulating among farms could not be established. Insertion element (ISCfe1), a 233 bp amplicon of Cfv, was sequenced and the sequence was deposited in GenBank (accession no: MK475662).

Abstract

The large area demand of constructed wetlands (CWs) is documented as a weak point that can be potentially reduced by applying active aeration. The aim of this study was, therefore, to understand the effects of aeration on the treatment performance, the biofilm activity, the protozoan population size and potential CW footprint reduction of different horizontal flow (HF) CW configurations. Two experimental periods were considered: a first period with low organic loading rate (OLR) and a second period with high OLR. Three HF CW configurations were compared: a conventional (control), an aerated and a hybrid CW (aerated followed by a non-aerated CW). The results obtained reinforced the competence of aerated CW for organic matter removal (81-89% of chemical oxygen demand) while for nitrogen elimination the control (19-24%) and hybrid (8-41%) systems performed better than the aerated system (-6% to 33%). Biofilm activity and protozoa abundance were distinctly higher at the inlet zones when compared with the outlet zones of all CWs, as well as in the aerated systems when compared with the non-aerated CWs. The protozoan abundance increased with an increase in the OLR and ciliates were found to be the dominant group. Overall, the active aeration highlighted the efficiency and stability of the CWs for organic matter removal and thus can be used as a promising tool to enhance microbial activity and grazing by protozoa; eventually reducing solid accumulation in the bed media. These beneficial effects contribute to reduce the CWs' area requirements.

20. Production of bio-oil from fixed bed pyrolysis of bagasse

Abstract

The objective of this work was to produce renewable liquid fuel (bio-oil) from locally produced bagasse by pyrolysis in a batch feeding and fixed bed reactor. The experiments were performed at different temperatures ranging from 300 to 600 °C. The bio-oil was collected from two condensers of different temperatures and defined as oil-1 and oil-2. The maximum total yield of bio-oil was found to be 66.0 wt% based on bagasse. The carbon based non-condensable gases were CO, CO2, methane, ethane, ethene, propane and propene. The density and viscosity of oil-1 were found to be 1130 kg/m3 and 19.32 centipoise and that were 1050 kg/m3 and 4.25 centipoise for oil-2, respectively. The higher heating values (HHV) of them were 17.25 and 19.91 MJ/kg, respectively. The pH of the bio-oils was found to be around 3.5 and 4.5 for oil-1 and oil-2, respectively. The water, solid and ash contents of oil-1 and oil-2 were determined and found to be around 15, 0.02 and 0.03 wt% and 11, 0.01 and 0.02 wt%, respectively based on bagasse.

The highest chemical indices, Brix % (22.20) and pol % (20.53) were found in January 2002 in I-93/93 and I-110/93 respectively and the lowest in I-39/94 (Brix %: 14.93; pol %: 12.52) at water-logged cultivated cane in all months. The highest of purity % (95.79) and recovery % (13.05) were found in I-110/93 in the month December 2001 and January 2002 respectively and the lowest in Isd 20 (purity % : 77.44; recovery 6.49 in September 2001) at water- logged and normal cultivated cane respectively. The highest R.S. % (1.51) was found in I-39/94 in all months and the lowest in I-110/93 (0.09) at water-logged cultivated cane. Result showed that the highest tiller (183.3 x 1000 ha-1 in I-110/93), millable cane (117.8x 1000 ha-1 in 1-8/95), Yield (162.8 t ha-1 in I-8/95) and TSH (16.63 ton sugar ha-1 in I- 110/93) were found in normal cultivated and the lowest were found in water- logged cultivated sugarcane (tiller 107.6x 1000 ha-1 in Isd 20; millable cane 73.38x 1000 ha-1 in Isd 30; yield 59.4 t ha-1 in Isd 20 and TSH 6.75 ton sugar ha-1 in Isd 20). It is concluded that the highest percentage in juice quality were found in water-logged condition cultivated cane, on the other hand growth & yield performance were also found in highest in normal cultivated cane. In aspect of sugar production some tested cultivars showed (Isd-20,1-93/93 and 1- 8/95) similar performance in normal and water-logged cultivated sugarcane due to genetic potentiality and environmental adaptation on quality, yield and growth.

Abstract

High quality BaTiO3 thin films on Si(100) substrates with TiN buffer layer were fabricated successfully by using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The high chemical stability and diffusion barrier properties of TiN were expected to prevent a reaction and interdiffusion between the BaTiO3 and Si(100). A KrF excimer laser (λ=248 nm) was used to ablate both the TiN and BaTiO3 targets. The depositions were carried out both in high vacuum (≤10−6 Torr) and oxygen ambient at different temperatures. The film deposited at 600°C under 100 mTorr oxygen atmosphere showed lower dielectric losses of 0.3% and DC leakage current of 0.06 μA than those deposited under high vacuum. Dielectric properties studies indicated a dielectric constant of 223 at capacitance density of 56 nF/mm2.

Abstract

Active and adaptive thin film materials for `smart' materials will likely be a heterostructure of several types of applications. In this investigation, TiNi shape memory thin films on Si(100) substrates with BaTiO 3 and PbZr 1− x Ti x O 3 (PZT) as buffer layer were deposited by the pulsed laser deposition method. The critical issues of deposition and processing of shape memory ferroelastic and ferroelectric materials have been addressed to fabricate the thin film sensor–actuator heterostructures. Characterization of the films has been done by using X-ray diffractometer and atomic force microscope techniques. The buffer layer of BaTiO 3 and PZT have been beneficial to grow crystalline quality TiNi films on Si(100) substrates.

Abstract

Pulsed laser deposition technique has been used to deposit high quality thin film coatings of diamond-like carbon (DLC) and titanium nitride (TiN) on Si (100) substrates. The mechanical properties (modulus and hardness) of these films were characterized by nano-indentation. The best crystalline quality of all films have shown the superior mechanical properties. The films have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, Raman spectroscopic and FTIR techniques. Correlations of the pulsed laser deposition parameters with the properties of deposited hard coatings have been discussed in this paper.

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the currently employed AVRs (Automatic Voltage Regulators), the analogue and the digital, microprocessor based sampled data controlled, devices with respect to their control systems. The main design aims and constraints are examined in terms of performance specification concerning the speed, accuracy and stability of control. The contradiction between transient and dynamic stability requirements and its present day resolution by introducing Power System Stabilizing function into the AVR functions is explained. The design is implemented and tested on a 110 W synchronous generator in Power System Laboratory with an IBM personal computer acting as the real time controller. The results show that the proposed PC-based AVR are very effective for operation of a controller. These include its low cost, fast response, higher reliability and ruggedness.

The optimum preparation conditions such as oxygen pressure, laser energy influence and substrate temperature were investigated. The PZT and LSCO films grown on Pt/(100)Si are polycrystalline. The crystallographic properties of the films were determined using X-ray diffractometer (XRD) method. The cross-sectional transmission electron microscope showed very smooth interface among different layers of films. The electrical characterizations of the films including hysteresis loop, fatigue, and retention properties were determined by the RT66A Standardized Ferroelectric Test System.
