Abstract

Compact accelerator machines are capable of producing accelerating gradients in the GV/m scale, which is significantly higher than the MV/m scale of conventional machines. As accelerators are widely used in many fields, such as industrial, research institutes, and medical applications, the development of these machines will undoubtedly have a profound impact on people's daily lives. SPARC_LAB, a test facility at INFN-LNF (Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati), is focused on enhancing particle accelerator research infrastructure using innovative plasma acceleration concepts. Within SPARC_LAB, we utilize plasma-filled capillaries with lengths of up to tens of centimeters. However, the plasma formation process is critical to ensure proper oversight of the plasma properties, which subsequently affects the dynamics of the electron bunch to be accelerated. One of the most critical points that significantly affects the properties of the electron beam passing through the plasma source is the shot-by-shot stability of the plasma density along the longitudinal dimension of the plasma-discharge capillary. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the shot-by-shot stability of the plasma density during discharge, contributing to further advancements in the field of plasma acceleration.

Abstract

In this article, we share our experience related to the new photo-injector commissioning at the SPARC_LAB test facility. The new photo-injector was installed into an existing machine and our goal was not only to improve the final beam parameters themselves but to improve the machine handling in day-to-day operations as well. Thus, besides the pure beam characterization, this article contains information about the improvements, that were introduced into the new photo-injector design from the machine maintenance point of view, and the benefits, that we gained by using the new technique to assemble the gun itself.

Abstract

Plasma-based technology promises a tremendous reduction in size of accelerators used for research, medical, and industrial applications, making it possible to develop tabletop machines accessible for a broader scientific community. The use of high-power laser pulses on gaseous targets is a promising method for the generation of accelerated electron beams at energies on the GeV scale, in extremely small sizes, typically millimetres. The gaseous target in question can be a collimated supersonic gasjet from a nozzle. In this work, a technique for optimising the so generated plasma channel is presented. In detail, a study on the influence of the nozzle throat shape in relation to the uniformity and density of the generated plasma profile is reported. These considerations are discussed first of all from a theoretical point of view, by means of a stationary one-dimensional mathematical model of the neutral gas, thus exploiting the possibility of comparing the properties of the output flow for different nozzle geometries. This is combined with an experimental approach using interferometric longitudinal density measurements of the plasma channel. The latter is generated by a high-power laser pulse focused on a helium gasjet, in the SPARC_LAB laboratories.

Abstract

The Frascati National Laboratories (LNF) are the oldest and largest research infrastructure of INFN, mainly devoted to the research in nuclear and particle physics, to the development of particle accelerators and frontier studies on new acceleration techniques. LNF is the place where the first electron-positron collisions were obtained in the early 60s. Presently LNF operates two accelerator complexes: DAFNE, an e+e- collider with center of mass energy set to the mass of the Φ meson, 1020 MeV. SPARC, a high intensity photoinjector capable of delivering electron beams up to 200 MeV, combined with a high power laser (FLAME), able to produce ultra short pulses, in the so called SPARC_LAB facility. The laboratory hosts also the NAUTILUS gravitational waves resonant bar detector, and thanks to the availability of several infrastructures, workshops, clean rooms etc.., it is also widely used as a facility for constructing large particle detectors used in other laboratories. The purpose of the present document is to address the question: is there a viable program on the development of internal activities which can allow the Laboratory to maximally exploit its capabilities and to maintain its role at the forefront of scientific research in the next decade? In particular, given the present Italian financial situation, is this possible by wisely upgrading the presently running infrastructures at moderate costs? On November 10-11, 2014 a workshop was held at LNF with the aim to discuss the above issues, with a broad participation of researchers from Italian and foreign institutions. A second workshop dedicated to the applications of the existing facilities to Materials Science was held on February 26-27, 2015. This document tries to summarize the main conclusions of these discussions.

Abstract

The FEL-SPARC operation with two bunches at different energies has been characterized using different tools. The effect of the e-beam matching on the SASE operation has been explored by controlling the transport with an ad hoc developed control system, allowing either the transport in matching conditions and in different configurations. Since the two bunches have, at the entrance of the undulator, different phase space characteristics we used this effect as a knob to enhance or suppress one or the other FEL mode. We investigated the effect of seeding on both frequencies and observed beating waves, furthermore we observed effects of intra-bunch seeding when only one of the modes is seeded.

Abstract

This paper describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of RUDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity "particles factory", based on a combination of high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linacs and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology.
