Abstract

Water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) is one of the key parts of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), the construction of which was completed by the end of 2020. The WCDA covers a 78 000-m2 area and there exist 3120 large size photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in three ponds: 8-in PMTs are used in WCDA pond No. 1 and 20-in PMTs are used in ponds No. 2 and No. 3. The front-end electronics (FEE) system based on multigain measurement technique is designed to achieve both high-precision time and charge measurements over a large dynamic range from single photon electron (S.P.E.) to 4000 P.E. (for water pond No. 1)/1800 P.E. (for water ponds No. 2 and No. 3). To achieve a high-quality clock distribution and phase alignment as well as mixed transmission of data, clock, and commands in one fiber over a long distance, an enhanced white rabbit (WR) technique is used. Testing of all the 350 FEE modules for the WCDA is presented in this article. Test results indicate that the charge resolution is better than 20% at S.P.E. and 1% at 1800/4000 P.E. and the time resolution is better than 300 ps root mean square (rms), which successfully meets the application requirement. All the FEE modules have been fabricated and installed for the LHAASO WCDA from 2018 to 2020, and the initial commissioning operation indicates that the FEEs function well.

Abstract

The first Water Cherenkov detector of the LHAASO experiment (WCDA-1) has been operating since April 2019. The data for the first year have been analyzed to test its performance by observing the Crab Nebula as a standard candle. The WCDA-1 achieves a sensitivity of 65 mCU per year, with a statistical threshold of 5 . To accomplish this, a 97.7% cosmic-ray background rejection rate around 1 TeV and 99.8% around 6 TeV with an approximate photon acceptance of 50% is achieved after applying an algorithm to separate gamma-induced showers. The angular resolution is measured using the Crab Nebula as a point source to be approximately 0.45° at 1 TeV and better than 0.2° above 6 TeV, with a pointing accuracy better than 0.05°. These values all match the design specifications. The energy resolution is found to be 33% for gamma rays around 6 TeV. The spectral energy distribution of the Crab Nebula in the range from 500 GeV to 15.8 TeV is measured and found to be in agreement with the results from other TeV gamma ray observatories.

Abstract

As one natural material, the physical and mechanical properties of rock will be affected very largely by chemical erosion environment. Under chemical environment, the strength of rock will be reduced. Considering the effect of the chemical erosion, fracture factor of rock is reduced. The damage variable is applied to express the change of fracture stress. Therefore, the fracture criterion of rock under chemical environment is constructed. By one experiment of rock fracture under chemical erosion environment, the proposed fracture criterion is verified. The results show that, the fracture path by theory is agree with the testing one well.

Abstract

Ref-1/APE1 (Redox Effector/Apurinic Endonuclease 1) is a multifunctional enzyme that serves as a redox factor for several transcription factors (TFs), e.g., NF-kB, HIF-1α, which in an oxidized state fail to bind DNA. Conversion of these TFs to a reduced state serves to regulate various biological responses such as cell growth, inflammation, and cellular metabolism. The redox activity involves a thiol exchange reaction for which Cys65 (C65) serves as the nucleophile. Using CRISPR editing in human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cells, we changed C65 to Ala (C65A) in Ref-1 to evaluate alteration of Ref-1 redox dynamics as well as chronic loss of Ref-1 redox activity on cell signaling pathways, specifically those regulated by NF-kB and HIF-1α. The redox activity of Ref-1 requires partial unfolding to expose C65, which is buried in the folded structure. Labeling of Ref-1 with polyethylene glycol-maleimide (PEGm) provides a readout of reduced Cys residues in Ref-1 and thereby an assessment of partial unfolding in Ref-1. In comparing Ref-1WT vs Ref-1C65A cell lines, we found an altered distribution of oxidized versus reduced states of Ref-1. Accordingly, activation of NF-kB and HIF-1α in Ref-1C65A lines was significantly lower compared to Ref-1WT lines. The bioinformatic data revealed significant downregulation of metabolic pathways including OXPHOS in Ref-1C65A expressing clones compared to Ref-1WT line. Ref-1C65A also demonstrated reduced cell proliferation and use of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) substrates compared to Ref-1WT lines. A subcutaneous as well as PDAC orthotopic in vivo model demonstrated a significant reduction in tumor size, weight, and growth in the Ref-1C65A lines compared to the Ref-1WT lines. Moreover, mice implanted with Ref-1C65A redox deficient cells demonstrate significantly reduced metastatic burden to liver and lung compared to mice implanted with Ref-1 redox proficient cells. These results from the current study provide direct evidence that the chronic absence of Cys65 in Ref-1 results in redox inactivity of the protein in human PDAC cells, and subsequent biological results confirm a critical involvement of Ref-1 redox signaling and tumorigenic phenotype.

Abstract

Автори відзначають, актуальність статті полягає в тому, що результати які отримані поліцією в процесі застосування нею технічних засобів та спеціальних технічних приладів в ході виконання покладених на неї завдань та здійснення повноважень, визначених законом, зокрема, під час проведення заходів забезпечення провадження в справах про адміністративні правопорушення, можуть бути використані як докази під час розгляду справи про адміністративне правопорушення та з’ясування питання про винуватість чи невинуватість особи яка притягується до адміністративної відповідальності. Доводиться, що дотримання поліцейським належної нормативно-правовової реґламентація використання технічних засобів та спеціальних технічних приладів під час проведення заходів забезпечення провадження в справах про адміністративні правопорушення є однією з визначальних умов ефективності профілактики та протидії правопорушенням. Проаналізовано чинне національне законодавство, на основі якого здійснюється нормативно-правова реґламентація використання поліцейськими технічних засобів та спеціальних технічних приладів під час проведення заходів забезпечення провадження в справах про адміністративні правопорушення та правозастосовна практика. Запропоновано певні шляхи вдосконалення діяльності поліцейських у сфері застосування нею технічних засобів та спеціальних технічних приладів, зокрема, в ході проведення заходів забезпечення провадження в справах про адміністративні правопорушення, та використання їх результатів в якості доказів, що відповідали б критеріям передбачених законодавством під час розгляду справи про адміністративне правопорушення. Саме тому метою статті є: підкреслення того, що застосування поліцейськими технічних засобів та спеціальних технічних приладів під час проведення заходів забезпечення провадження в справах про адміністративні правопорушення та використання їх результатів в якості доказів, має ґрунтуватись на суворому дотриманні нормативно-правових процедур, що регламентують використання таких засобів та приладів. У результаті аналізу зазначених наукових доктрин і норм чинного законодавства України автори приходять до висновку, що не дотримання поліцейськими нормативно-правових процедур, що регламентують використання таких технічних засобів та спеціальних технічних приладів в ході виконання покладених на неї завдань та здійснення повноважень, призводить до визнання здобутих за їх допомогою результатів фіксації правопорушення недопустимим доказом в справі про адміністративне правопорушення, оскільки в ч.З ст.62 Конституції України чітко зазначено, що обвинувачення не може грунтуватися на доказах, одержаних незаконним шляхом, а також на припущеннях. Усі сумніви щодо доведеності вини особи тлумачаться на її користь.

Abstract

It has been proven theoretically that light reflected from the surface of an optical metamaterial with a zero refractive index is focused in the area of a focal spot with a radius of λ / 16, where λ is the wavelength of light. It is shown that at a zero refractive index, the laws of refraction and reflection of light are violated, the angles of refraction and reflection become random quantities. The reflectivity of the surface in the region of the focal spot is calculated in the presence of a diatomic nanostructured object on the surface. It is shown that the size of the focal spot increases with the distance from the center of the focal spot from the surface. In this case, an image of a nanostructured object can be obtained.

Abstract

Introduction: Articles published in the literature report neurological manifestations or “complications” of SARS-CoV-2 infection and conclude that the different neurological manifestations are relatively similar, but with different frequencies. This study aimed to determine the frequency of neurological manifestations of COVID-19 and to identify which are associated with mortality. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of all patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection by RT-PCR at Hospital 1° de Octubre, in Mexico, from the beginning of the pandemic to 22 December 2020. A total of 561 patients were identified, 370 of whom presented neurological manifestations. Results: The global mortality rate was 37.8% (140/370), increasing to 92.4% among intubated patients (135/146). Of the 370 patients included, approximately 20% of neurological symptoms (headache, neurological impairment, anosmia, ageusia) accounted for 80% of cases of neurological manifestations. Conclusions: At our hospital, 80% of the patients with neurological manifestations of COVID-19 presented headache, neurological impairment, ageusia, and/or anosmia. Neurological impairment at admission or before arriving at hospital was identified as a risk factor for mortality. Resumen: Introducción: Los artículos se han referido a manifestaciones neurológicas o «complicaciones» producidas por el SARS-CoV-2, concluyendo que las diferentes manifestaciones neurológicas han sido relativamente similares, pero con diferentes proporciones. Por ello, el objetivo de este estudio es cuantificar las manifestaciones neurológicas en COVID-19, e identificar cuál está asociada a la muerte. Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo con todos los pacientes del Hospital «1.° de Octubre» infectados por COVID-19, y detectados mediante RT-PCR, desde el inicio de la pandemia hasta el 22 de diciembre de 2020, donde se obtuvieron un total de 561 casos. Resultados: La tasa de mortalidad global fue del 37,8% (140/370), mientras que para los pacientes intubados fue del 92,4% (135/146). De los 370 pacientes obtenidos, aproximadamente el 20% de las manifestaciones (cefalea, deterioro neurológico, anosmia, ageusia) ocurrieron con una frecuencia del 80% de manifestaciones neurológicas. Conclusiones: Cefalea, afección neurológica, ageusia y anosmia representaron el 80% de las manifestaciones neurológicas en el Hospital «1.° de Octubre». El deterioro neurológico al ingreso al hospital o antes de llegar fue un factor de riesgo de muerte.

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of adding discrete glass fibers on the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under different fire and cooling conditions. Eighteen beams with different concrete compressive strengths were tested to study the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams containing discrete glass fibers when exposed to different fire and cooling conditions. Nine beams were prepared from normal strength concrete (NSC) with compressive strength equal to 35 MPa while the other beams were prepared from high strength concrete (HSC) with compressive strength equal to 60 MPa. The beams contained different contents of discrete glass fibers. The modes of failure of tested specimens show that the crack patterns change according to fire condition and fiber content. Analysis of test results show that adding discrete glass fibers to NSC increased the residual stiffness of the tested specimens after firing and decreased the rate of the deflection gain during firing. Also adding fibers to concrete has a limited positive effect on the ultimate strength of the specimens compared to the control specimens. Its effect on deflection due to fire is more pronounced. Finally, the recommended optimum ratio of discrete glass fibers is not more than 0.5% of the total concrete weight.

10. Regulation of soy isoflavones on weight gain and fat percentage: evaluation in a Chinese Guangxi minipig model

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of soy isoflavones on changes in body and tissue weight and on insulin-like factor I (IGF-I) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) gene and protein expression in muscle and adipose tissues in Chinese Guangxi minipig, as a model for studying human nutrition. A total of 72 male Chinese Guangxi minipigs were fed basal diet (control, Con), low dose of soy isoflavones and high dose of soy isoflavones (HSI). The results showed that HSI increased the body weight (BW) gain and fat percentage of minipigs (P < 0.05). In addition, the serum concentrations of IGF-I and interleukin-6 were increased by high levels of soy isoflavones (P < 0.05). Furthermore, a diet containing soy isoflavones enhanced IGF-I mRNA expression levels in longissimus muscle, but decreased these levels in perirenal fat. However, the mRNA and protein expression levels of PPARγ in longissimus muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue were both increased when compared with the Con. The data indicated that soy isoflavones regulated the BW gain and fat percentage of Chinese Guangxi minipigs, which also showed changes in IGF-I system and PPARγ. However, further research is required to clarify the causative relationship.

Abstract

Purpose To compare the CT imaging performance of a carboxybetaine zwitterionic-coated tantalum oxide (TaCZ) nanoparticle CT contrast agent with that of a conventional iodinated contrast agent in a swine model meant to simulate overweight and obese patients. Materials and Methods Four swine were evaluated inside three different-sized adipose-equivalent encasements emulating abdominal girths of 102, 119, and 137 cm. Imaging was performed with a 64-detector row CT scanner at six scan delays after intravenous injection of 240 mg element (Ta or I) per kilogram of body weight of TaCZ or iopromide. For each time point, contrast enhancement of the aorta and liver were measured by using regions of interest. Two readers independently recorded the clarity of vasculature using a five-point Likert scale. Findings were compared by using paired t tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Results Mean peak enhancement was higher for TaCZ than for iopromide in the aorta (270 HU [σ = 24.5] vs 199 HU [σ = 10.2], P < .001) and liver (61.3 HU [σ = 11.7] vs 45.2 HU [σ = 8], P < .001). Vascular clarity was higher for TaCZ than for iopromide in 63% (132 of 208), 82% (170 of 208), and 86% (178 of 208) of the individual vessels at the 102-, 119-, and 137-cm girths, respectively (P < .01). Arterial clarity scores were higher for TaCZ than for iopromide in 62% (208 of 336) of vessels. Venous clarity scores were higher for TaCZ than for iopromide in 89% (128 of 144) of the veins in the venous phase and in 100% (144 of 144) of veins in the delayed phase (P < .01). No vessel showed higher clarity score with iopromide than with TaCZ. Conclusion An experimental tantalum nanoparticle-based contrast agent showed greater contrast enhancement compared with iopromide in swine models meant to simulate overweight and obese patients. © RSNA, 2018.
