We use the SMASH survey to obtain unprecedented deep photometry reaching down to the oldest main sequence turn-offs in the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and quantitatively derive its star formation history (SFH) using CMD fitting techniques. We identify five distinctive peaks of star formation in the last 3.5 Gyr, at $\sim $3, $\sim$2, $\sim$1.1, $\sim $0.45 Gyr ago, and one presently. We compare these to the SFH of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) finding unequivocal synchronicity, with both galaxies displaying similar periods of enhanced star formation over the past $\sim$3.5 Gyr. The parallelism between their SFHs indicates that tidal interactions between the MCs have recurrently played an important role in their evolution for at least the last $\sim$3.5 Gyr, tidally truncating the SMC and shaping the LMC's spiral arm. We show, for the first time, an SMC-LMC correlated SFH at recent times in which enhancements of star formation are localised in the northern spiral arm of the LMC, and globally across the SMC. These novel findings should be used to constrain not only the orbital history of the MCs but also how star formation should be treated in simulations., 6 pages, 4 figures. The star cluster (SC) age distribution of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) exhibits a gap from $\sim$ 4 to 10 Gyr ago, with an almost total absence of SCs. Within this age gap, only two confirmed SCs have been identified hitherto. Nonetheless, the star field counterpart does not show the same characteristics, making the LMC a peculiar galaxy where star formation history and cluster formation history appear to differ significantly. We re-analyzed the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the KMHK 1762 SC by using the deep optical photometry provided by the "Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again" survey, to robustly assess its age. First, we partially removed foreground and/or field stars by means of parallaxes and proper motions obtained from the {\it Gaia} Early Data Release 3. Then, we applied the Automated Stellar Cluster Analysis package to the cleaned photometric catalogue to identify the isochrone that best matches the CMD of KMHK 1762. The estimated age of KMHK 1762 is $\log (t) = 9.74 \pm 0.15$ dex ($\sim$5.5 Gyr), that is more than 2 Gyr older than the previous estimation which was obtained with shallower photometry. This value makes KMHK 1762 the third confirmed age gap SC of the LMC. The physical existence of a quiescent period of the LMC SC formation is questioned. We suggest it can be the result of an observational bias, originated by the combination of shallow photometry and limited investigation of the LMC periphery., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We present FORS2@VLT follow-up photometry of YMCA-1, a recently discovered stellar system located 13° from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) center. The deep color–magnitude diagram (CMD) reveals a well-defined main sequence (MS) and a handful of stars in the post-MS evolutionary phases. We analyze the YMCA-1 CMD by means of the automated isochrone-matching package ASteCA and model its radial density profile with a Plummer function. We find that YMCA-1 is an old ( 11.7 − 1.3 + 1.7 Gyr), metal-intermediate ([Fe/H] ≃ − 1.12 − 0.13 + 0.21 dex), compact (r h = 3.5 ± 0.5 pc), low-mass (M = 102.45±0.02 M ⊙), and low-luminosity (M V = −0.47 ± 0.57 mag) stellar system. The estimated distance modulus ( μ 0 = 18.72 − 0.17 + 0.15 mag), corresponding to about 55 kpc, suggests that YMCA-1 is associated with the LMC, but we cannot discard the scenario in which it is a Milky Way satellite. The structural parameters of YMCA-1 are remarkably different compared with those of the 15 known old LMC globular clusters. In particular, it resides in a transition region of the M V –r h plane, in between the ultrafaint dwarf galaxies and the classical old clusters, and close to SMASH-1, another faint stellar system recently discovered in the LMC surroundings.

In the framework of the STREGA (STRucture and Evolution of the GAlaxy) survey, two fields around the globular cluster Pal 12 were observed with the aim of detecting the possible presence of streams and/or an extended halo. The adopted stellar tracers are the Main Sequence, Turn-off and Red Giant Branch stars. We discuss the lumi- nosity function and the star counts in the observed region covering about 2 tidal radii, confirming that Pal 12 appears to be embedded in the Sagittarius Stream. Adopting an original approach to separate cluster and field stars, we do not find any evidence of sig- nificant extra-tidal Pal 12 stellar populations. The presence of the Sagittarius stream seems to have mimicked a larger tidal radius in previous studies. Indeed, adopting a King model, a redetermination of this value gives r_T = 0.22 +- 0.1 deg., 13 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS on 22 September 2017

We report the discovery of a stellar over-density 8$^{\circ}$ north of the center of the Small Magellanic Cloud (Small Magellanic Cloud Northern Over-Density; SMCNOD) using data from the first two years of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the first year of the MAGellanic SatelLITEs Survey (MagLiteS). The SMCNOD is indistinguishable in age, metallicity and distance from the nearby SMC stars, being primarly composed of intermediate-age stars (6 Gyr, Z=0.001), with a small fraction of young stars (1 Gyr, Z=0.01). The SMCNOD has an elongated shape with an ellipticity of 0.6 and a size of $\sim$ 6x2 deg. It has an absolute magnitude of $M_V \cong$ -7.7, $r_h = 2.1$ kpc, and $\mu_V(r, Comment: 14 pages, 10 color figures

The VISTA Magellanic Cloud (VMC, PI M.R. Cioni) survey is collecting deep Ks-band time-series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted by the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds (MCs) and the "bridge" connecting them. In this paper we present the first results for Classical Cepheids, from the VMC observations of two fields in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The VMC Ks-band light curves of the Cepheids are well sampled (12-epochs) and of excellent precision. We were able to measure for the first time the Ks magnitude of the faintest Classical Cepheids in the LMC (Ks\sim17.5 mag), which are mostly pulsating in the First Overtone (FO) mode, and to obtain FO Period-Luminosity (PL), Period-Wesenheit (PW), and Period-Luminosity-Color (PLC) relations, spanning the full period range from 0.25 to 6 day. Since the longest period Cepheid in our dataset has a variability period of 23 day, we have complemented our sample with literature data for brighter F Cepheids. On this basis we have built a PL relation in the Ks band that, for the first time, includes short period pulsators, and spans the whole range from 1.6 to 100 days in period. We also provide the first ever empirical PW and PLC relations using the (V-Ks) color and time-series Ks photometry. The very small dispersion (\sim0.07 mag) of these relations makes them very well suited to study the three-dimensional (3D) geometry of the Magellanic system. The use of "direct" (parallax- and Baade-Wesselink- based) distance measurements to both Galactic and LMC Cepheids, allowed us to calibrate the zero points of the PL, PW, and PLC relations obtained in this paper, and in turn to estimate an absolute distance modulus of (m-M)0=18.46\pm0.03 for the LMC. This result is in agreement with most of the latest literature determinations based on Classical Cepheids.

We report on an analysis of the gas and dust budget in the the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the LMC. This is the first time we can quantitatively assess the gas and dust input from AGB stars over a complete galaxy, fully based on observations. The integrated mass-loss rate over all intermediate and high mass-loss rate carbon-rich AGB candidates in the LMC is 8.5x10^-3 solar mass per year, up to 2.1x10^-2 solar mass per year. This number could be increased up to 2.7x10^-2 solar mass per year, if oxygen-rich stars are included. This is overall consistent with theoretical expectations, considering the star formation rate when these low- and intermediate-mass stars where formed, and the initial mass functions. AGB stars are one of the most important gas sources in the LMC, with supernovae (SNe), which produces about 2-4x10^-2 solar mass per year. At the moment, the star formation rate exceeds the gas feedback from AGB stars and SNe in the LMC, and the current star formation depends on gas already present in the ISM. This suggests that as the gas in the ISM is exhausted, the star formation rate will eventually decline in the LMC, unless gas is supplied externally. Our estimates suggest `a missing dust-mass problem' in the LMC, which is similarly found in high-z galaxies: the accumulated dust mass from AGB stars and possibly SNe over the dust life time (400--800 Myrs) is significant less than the dust mass in the ISM. The VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC) is a public survey project of ESO. It is collecting near-infrared data across large areas of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Bridge and a few fields in the Stream. The combination of great sensitivity to stars below the old main sequence turn off, and the multiplicity at Ks band (at least 12 epochs) make VMC highly suitable for the determination of the spatially resolved star formation history and three-dimensional geometry, using variable stars such as Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars. The VMC observations, to be completed in 2018, have a high legacy value and many science results have already been published while others are in preparation.

STEP (Small Magellanic Cloud in Time: Evolution of a Prototype interacting late-type dwarf galaxy) is a Guaranteed Time Observation survey being carried out at the VLT Survey Telescope. STEP will obtain homogeneous photometry in the g-, r-, i- and Hα-bands over an area of 74 deg2 covering the main body of the Small Magellanic Cloud, the Bridge that connects it to the Large Magellanic Cloud and a small part of the Magellanic Stream (2 deg2). Our photometry will allow us to detect and measure the magnitudes of individual stars well below the main sequence turnoff of the oldest populations. Here we briefly describe the observing strategy, the photometric techniques, and the upcoming data products of the STEP survey.

STREGA (STRucture and Evolution of the Galaxy) is an ongoing VLT Survey Telescope Guaranteed Time survey, aimed at investigating the mechanisms of formation and evolution of the Galactic Halo on an area of about 150 square degrees. The core programme searches for the signatures of interaction between selected stellar systems and the Galactic Halo and a complementary part is focussed on exploring the southern portion of the Fornax Stream. The adopted stellar tracers are variable stars and main sequence turn-off stars. We present an overview of the survey, the first results, and the perspectives.

Recent morphological studies of galaxies by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have revealed that actively star-forming galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts (z = 0.5 2.0) have very clumpy and irregular distributions of stars. It is however unclear whether and how these clumpy galaxies evolve into the present spiral and elliptical galaxies with regular shapes. We here propose that spatial distributions of AGB stars, probing the different mean age and metallicity of the underlying stellar population, can provide vital clues to the evolution of these clumpy galaxies, in particular, those at intermediate redshifts. In order to demonstrate this proposal to be quite promising, we show the results of test-particle simulations on the long-term dynamical evolution of unbound groups of AGB stars (“stellar clumps”), which correspond to the successors of star-forming clumps at intermediate redshifts, in isolated and interacting galaxies. We particularly show that azimuthal distributions of AGB stars dispersed from stellar clumps as a result of gravitational interaction with their host galaxies can be still inhomogeneous several Gyrs after stellar clump formation for some models. We also show that the inhomogeneities in the azimuthal distributions of dispersed AGB stars can more quickly disappear in stellar clumps with larger sizes and higher velocity dispersions. These results suggest that if apparently clumpy structures of galaxies at intermediate redshifts are due to stars in unbound or weakly bound clusters, spatial distributions of AGB stars can have fossil records on past clumpy structures of galaxies. As an example, we compare the latest observations on the spatial distributions of AGB stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC and SMC, respectively) with the corresponding simulations and thereby discuss whether the LMC and the SMC had massive star-forming clumps in their outer disks a few to several Gyrs ago.

We present results of the analysis of 70 RR Lyrae stars located in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Combining spectroscopically determined metallicity of these stars from the literature with precise periods from the OGLE III catalogue and multi-epoch $K_{\rm s}$ photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), we derive a new near-infrared period-luminosity-metallicity (${\rm PL_{K_{\rm s}}Z}$) relation for RR Lyrae variables. In order to fit the relation we use a fitting method developed specifically for this study. The zero-point of the relation is estimated in two different ways: by assuming the value of the distance to the LMC and by using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) parallaxes of five RR Lyrae stars in the Milky Way (MW). The difference in distance moduli derived by applying these two approaches is $\sim0.2$ mag. To investigate this point further we derive the ${\rm PL_{K_{\rm s}}Z}$ relation based on 23 MW RR Lyrae stars which had been analysed in Baade-Wesselink studies. We compared the derived ${\rm PL_{K_{\rm s}}Z}$ relations for RR Lyrae stars in the MW and LMC. Slopes and zero-points are different, but still consistent within the errors. The shallow slope of the metallicity term is confirmed by both LMC and MW variables. The astrometric space mission Gaia is expected to provide a huge contribution to the determination of the RR Lyrae ${\rm PL_{K_{\rm s}}Z}$ relation, however, calculating an absolute magnitude from the trigonometric parallax of each star and fitting a ${\rm PL_{K_{\rm s}}Z}$ relation directly to period and absolute magnitude leads to biased results. We present a tool to achieve an unbiased solution by modelling the data and inferring the slope and zero-point of the relation via statistical methods., 38 pages, 5 figures. We investigate the molecular bands in carbon-rich AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) over the 5–38 µm range. All 26 low-resolution spectra show acetylene (C2H2) bands at 7 and 14 µm. The hydrogen cyanide (HCN) bands at these wavelengths are very weak or absent. This is consistent with low nitrogen abundances in the LMC. The observed 14 µm C2H2 band is reasonably reproduced by an excitation temperature of 500 K. There is no clear dilution of the 14 µm C2H2 band by circumstellar dust emission. This 14 µm band originates from molecular gas in the circumstellar envelope in these high mass-loss rate stars, in agreement with previous findings for Galactic stars. The C2H2 column density, derived from the 13.7 µm band, shows a gas mass-loss rate in the range 3 ×10 −6 to 5 ×10 −5 M ⊙ yr −1 . This is comparable with the total mass-loss rate of these stars estimated from the spectral energy distribution. Additionally, we compare the line strengths of the 13.7 µm C2H2 band of our LMC sample with those of a Galactic sample. Despite the low metallicity of the LMC, there is no clear difference in the C2H2 abundance among LMC and Galactic stars. This reflects the effect of the 3rd dredge-up bringing self-produced carbon to the surface, leading to high C/O ratios at low metallicity.

Observations in the IJKs wave bands covering the central 20'x20' of the Local Group galaxy NGC 6822 have been performed from the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma. They have allowed us to characterize, for the first time in the near-infrared across the whole galaxy, its late-type stellar population (i.e. red giant and asymptotic giant branch stars) and to derive from the ratio between carbon-rich and oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch stars an indication about spatial variations in metallicity. These amount to about 1.89 dex, twice of what has been previously found within each Magellanic Cloud using the same technique. We have calibrated our photometry on the DENIS (I-band) and 2MASS (J and Ks bands) data and obtained a distance modulus of (m-M)_0=23.34(0.12) from the position of the tip of the RGB. The large scale distribution of late-type stars suggests that either the galaxy lies on a strongly inclined plane or it has a non-neglible thickness., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, A&A in press, fig.14 modified and relative text, plus some comments added in Sect. 5.1 and other minor corrections

This article presents the study of the light-curves extracted from the MACHO database of a sample of stars observed by the ISO in the SMC. These stars belong to the ISO-Mini-Survey catalogue of the Magellanic Clouds (ISO-MCMS, Loup et al. in preparation). Most of them are in the AGB and supergiant phases. The dominant period and amplitude of pulsation have been derived and the stars have been classified as Mira or Semi-Regular pulsators. Furthermore, the cross-identification with near-infrared DENIS and 2MASS magnitudes available within the ISO-MCMS allowed us: (i) to investigate the properties of these stars in the combined near- and mid-infrared colour-magnitude diagrams, (ii) to derive the bolometric magnitude by integrating the spectral energy distribution and (iii) to estimate the mass-loss rate. The stars have been divided into carbon- (C-) and oxygen-rich (O-rich) using the (J-Ks, Ks) colour-magnitude diagram and their period and amplitude distributions have been compared. C-rich AGB stars have a sharp peak in their period distribution at about 250 days and have on average a larger amplitude than O-rich AGB stars. This effect, not previously detected from the study of similar stars in the LMC and in the Baade's window, might be closely related to the metallicity of the environment in which the stars have formed.

The VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds System (VMC) is collecting deep $K_\mathrm{s}$--band time--series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted in the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds and the Bridge connecting them. In this paper we have analysed a sample of 130 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Type II Cepheids (T2CEPs) found in tiles with complete or near complete VMC observations for which identification and optical magnitudes were obtained from the OGLE III survey. We present $J$ and $K_\mathrm{s}$ light curves for all 130 pulsators, including 41 BL Her, 62 W Vir (12 pW Vir) and 27 RV Tau variables. We complement our near-infrared photometry with the $V$ magnitudes from the OGLE III survey, allowing us to build a variety of Period-Luminosity ($PL$), Period-Luminosity-Colour ($PLC$) and Period-Wesenheit ($PW$) relationships, including any combination of the $V, J, K_\mathrm{s}$ filters and valid for BL Her and W Vir classes. These relationships were calibrated in terms of the LMC distance modulus, while an independent absolute calibration of the $PL(K_\mathrm{s})$ and the $PW(K_\mathrm{s},V)$ was derived on the basis of distances obtained from $Hubble Space Telescope$ parallaxes and Baade-Wesselink technique. When applied to the LMC and to the Galactic Globular Clusters hosting T2CEPs, these relations seem to show that: 1) the two population II standard candles RR Lyrae and T2CEPs give results in excellent agreement with each other; 2) there is a discrepancy of $\sim$0.1 mag between population II standard candles and Classical Cepheids when the distances are gauged in a similar way for all the quoted pulsators. We present a catalogue of 1768 eclipsing binary stars (EBs) detected in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by the second generation of the EROS survey (hereinafter EROS-2); 493 of them are new discoveries located in outer regions (out of the central bar) of the LMC. These sources were originally included in a list of candidate classical Cepheids (CCs) extracted from the EROS-2 catalogue on the basis of the period (0.89 $, Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first cross-identifications of sources in the near-infrared DENIS survey and in the micro-lensing EROS survey in a field of about 0.5 square degrees around the optical center (OC) of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We analyze the photometric history of these stars in the EROS data base and obtain light-curves for about 800 variables. Most of the stars are long period variables (Miras and Semi-Regulars), a few Cepheids are also present. We also present new spectroscopic data on 126 asymptotic giant branch stars in the OC field, 30 previously known and 96 newly discovered by the DENIS survey. The visible spectra are used to assign a carbon- (C-) or oxygen-rich (O-rich) nature to the observed stars on the basis of the presence of molecular bands of TiO, VO, CN, C2. For the remaining of the stars we used the (J-Ks) color to determine whether they are O-rich or C-rich. Plotting Log(period) versus Ks we find three very distinct period-luminosity relations, mainly populated by Semi-Regular of type a (SRa), b (SRb) and Mira variables. Carbon-rich stars occupy mostly the upper part of these relations. The VISTA near-infrared $YJK_\mathrm{s}$ survey of the Magellanic Clouds System (VMC, PI M.-R. L. Cioni) is collecting deep $K_\mathrm{s}$-band time-series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted in the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds and the Bridge connecting them. In this paper we present for the first time $K_\mathrm{s}$-band light curves for Anomalous Cepheid (AC) variables. In particular, we have analysed a sample of 48 Large Magellanic Cloud ACs, for which identification and optical magnitudes were obtained from the OGLE III and IV catalogues. The VMC $K_\mathrm{s}$-band light curves for ACs are well sampled, with the number of epochs ranging from 8 to 16, and allowing us to obtain very precise mean $K_\mathrm{s}$ magnitudes with errors on average of the order of 0.01 mag. The $\langle K_\mathrm{s} \rangle$ values were used to build the first Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit relations in the near-infrared for fundamental-mode and first overtone ACs. At the same time we exploited the optical ($V,I$) OGLE data to build accurate Period-Luminosity, Period-Luminosity-Colour and Period-Wesenheit relations both for fundamental-mode and first overtone ACs. For the first time these relations were derived from a sample of pulsators which uniformly cover the whole AC instability strip. The application of the optical Period-Wesenheit relation to a sample of dwarf galaxies hosting a significant population of ACs revealed that this relation is a valuable tool for deriving distances within the Local Group. Due to its lower dispersion, we expect the $K_\mathrm{s}$ Period-Wesenheit relations first derived in this paper to represent a valuable tool for measuring accurate distances to galaxies hosting ACs when more data in near-infrared filters become available., 14 Pages. STREGA (STRucture and Evolution of the GAlaxy) is a Guaranteed Time survey being performed at the VST (the ESO VLT Survey Telescope) to map about 150 square degrees in the Galactic halo, in order to constrain the mechanisms of galactic formation and evolution. The survey is built as a five-year project, organized in two parts: a core program to explore the surrounding regions of selected stellar systems and a second complementary part to map the southern portion of the Fornax orbit and extend the observations of the core program. The adopted stellar tracers are mainly variable stars (RR~Lyraes and Long Period Variables) and Main Sequence Turn-off stars for which observations in the g,r,i bands are obtained. We present an overview of the survey and some preliminary results for three observing runs that have been completed. For the region centered on $\omega$~Cen (37 deg^2), covering about three tidal radii, we also discuss the detected stellar density radial profile and angular distribution, leading to the identification of extratidal cluster stars. We also conclude that the cluster tidal radius is about 1.2 deg, in agreement with values in the literature based on the Wilson model., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS on 2014 August 18

NGC 6822 is an irregular dwarf galaxy and part of the Local Group. Its close proximity and apparent isolation provide a unique opportunity to study galactic evolution without any obvious strong external influences. This paper aims to study the spatial distribution of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) population and metallicity in NGC 6822. Using deep, high quality JHK photometry, taken with WFCAM on UKIRT, carbon- and oxygen-rich AGB stars have been isolated. The ratio between their number, the C/M ratio, has then been used to derive the [Fe/H] abundance across the galaxy. The tip of the red giant branch is located at K0 = 17.41 \pm 0.11 mag and the colour separation between carbon- and oxygen-rich AGB stars is at (J - K)0 = 1.20 \pm 0.03 mag (i.e. (J - K)2MAS S {\guillemotright} 1.28 mag). A C/M ratio of 0.62 \pm 0.03 has been derived in the inner 4 kpc of the galaxy, which translates into an iron abundance of [Fe/H] = -1.29\pm0.07 dex. Variations of these parameters were investigated as a function of distance from the galaxy centre and azimuthal angle. The AGB population of NGC 6822 has been detected out to a radius of 4 kpc giving a diameter of 56 arcmin. It is metal-poor, but there is no obvious gradient in metallicity with either radial distance from the centre or azimuthal angle. The detected spread in the TRGB magnitude is consistent with that of a galaxy surrounded by a halo of old stars. The C/M ratio has the potential to be a very useful tool for the determination of metallicity in resolved galaxies but a better calibration of the C/M vs. [Fe/H] relation and a better understanding of the sensitivities of the C/M ratio to stellar selection criteria is first required.

MOONS is a new conceptual design for a Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph for the Very Large Telescope (VLT), selected by ESO for a Phase A study. The baseline design consists of 1000 fibers deployable over a field of view of 500 square arcmin, the largest patrol field offered by the Nasmyth focus at the VLT. The total wavelength coverage is 0.8um-1.8um and two resolution modes: medium resolution and high resolution. In the medium resolution mode (R=4,000-6,000) the entire wavelength range 0.8um-1.8um is observed simultaneously, while the high resolution mode covers simultaneously three selected spectral regions: one around the CaII triplet (at R=8,000) to measure radial velocities, and two regions at R=20,000 one in the J-band and one in the H-band, for detailed measurements of chemical abundances. The grasp of the 8.2m Very Large Telescope (VLT) combined with the large multiplex and wavelength coverage of MOONS - extending into the near-IR - will provide the observational power necessary to study galaxy formation and evolution over the entire history of the Universe, from our Milky Way, through the redshift desert and up to the epoch of re-ionization at z>8-9. At the same time, the high spectral resolution mode will allow astronomers to study chemical abundances of stars in our Galaxy, in particular in the highly obscured regions of the Bulge, and provide the necessary follow-up of the Gaia mission. Such characteristics and versatility make MOONS the long-awaited workhorse near-IR MOS for the VLT, which will perfectly complement optical spectroscopy performed by FLAMES and VIMOS., 9 pages, 5 figures. The VISTA Magellanic Cloud (VMC) survey is assembling a deep, multi-epoch atlas of YJKs photometry across the Magellanic Clouds. Prior to the VMC survey only the brightest Magellanic Cloud PNe (MCPNe) were accessible at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. It is now possible for the first time to assemble the NIR properties of MCPNe and to identify contaminating non-PNe mimics which are best revealed at NIR wavelengths (e.g. HII regions and symbiotic stars). To maintain the unique scientific niche that MCPNe occupy these contaminants must be removed. Here we conduct a VMC-led, multi-wavelength study of 102 objects previously classified as PNe that are located within the first six VMC tiles observed. We present images, photometry, lightcurves, diagnostic colour-colour diagrams and spectral energy distributions used to analyse the entire sample. At least five PNe have newly resolved nebula morphologies, a task previously only possible with the HST. A total 45/67 (67%) of Reid & Parker (RP) catalogued objects were reclassified as non-PNe, most of which were located in the vicinity of 30 Doradus. This sample included 16 field stars, 5 emission line stars, 19 HII regions, 4 symbiotic star candidates and 1 young stellar object. We discuss possible selection effects responsible for their inclusion in the RP catalogue and the implications for binary central star surveys targeting LMC PNe. We present spectroscopic observations from the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope} of six carbon-rich AGB stars in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr dSph) and two foreground Galactic carbon stars. The band strengths of the observed C$_2$H$_2$ and SiC features are very similar to those observed in Galactic AGB stars. The metallicities are estimated from an empirical relation between the acetylene optical depth and the strength of the SiC feature. The metallicities are higher than those of the LMC, and close to Galactic values. While the high metallicity could imply an age of around 1 Gyr, for the dusty AGB stars, the pulsation periods suggest ages in excess of 2 or 3 Gyr. We fit the spectra of the observed stars using the DUSTY radiative transfer model and determine their dust mass-loss rates to be in the range 1.0--3.3$\times 10^{-8} $M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. The two Galactic foreground carbon-rich AGB stars are located at the far side of the solar circle, beyond the Galactic Centre. The stellar metallicity and its gradient pose constraints to the formation and evolution of galaxies. This is a study of the metallicity gradient of the LMC, SMC and M33 galaxies derived from their asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The [Fe/H] abundance was derived from the ratio between C- and M-type AGB stars and its variation analysed as a function of galactocentric distance. Galaxy structure parameters were adopted from the literature. The metallicity of the LMC decreases linearly as -0.047+/-0.003 dex/kpc out to ~8 kpc from the centre. In the SMC, [Fe/H] has a constant value of ~ -1.25+/-0.01 dex up to ~ 12 kpc. The gradient of the M33 disc, until ~ 9 kpc, is -0.078+/-0.003 dex/kpc while an outer disc/halo, out to ~ 25 kpc, has [Fe/H] ~ -1.7 dex. The metallicity of the LMC, as traced by different populations, bears the signature of two major star forming episodes: the first one constituting a thick disc/halo population and the second one a thin disc and bar due to a close encounter with the MW and SMC. The [Fe/H] of the recent episode supports an LMC origin for the Stream. The metallicity of the SMC supports star formation, ~ 3 Gyr ago, as triggered by LMC interaction and sustained by the bar in the outer region of the galaxy. The SMC [Fe/H] agrees with the present-day abundance in the Bridge and shows no significant gradient. The metallicity of M33 supports an ``inside-out'' disc formation via accretion of metal poor gas from the interstellar medium., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted version

We present a study of a sample of LMC red giants exhibiting Long Secondary Periods (LSPs). We use radial velocities obtained from VLT spectral observations and MACHO and OGLE light curves to examine properties of the stars and to evaluate models for the cause of LSPs. This sample is much larger than the combined previous studies of Hinkle et al. (2002) and Wood, Olivier & Kawaler (2004). Binary and pulsation models have enjoyed much support in recent years. Assuming stellar pulsation, we calculate from the velocity curves that the typical fractional radius change over an LSP cycle is greater than 30 per cent. This should lead to large changes in Teff that are not observed. Also, the small light amplitude of these stars seems inconsistent with the radius amplitude. We conclude that pulsation is not a likely explanation for the LSPs. The main alternative, physical movement of the star -- binary motion -- also has severe problems. If the velocity variations are due to binary motion, the distribution of the angle of periastron in our large sample of stars has a probability of 1.4e-3 that it comes from randomly aligned binary orbits. In addition, we calculate a typical companion mass of 0.09 Msun. Less than 1 per cent of low mass main sequence stars have companions near this mass (0.06 to 0.12 Msun) whereas ~25 to 50 per cent of low mass red giants end up with LSPs. No model has been proposed that can satisfactorily explain the LSPs. Here we present velocity curves obtained from VLT spectra for a large sample of LMC red giants exhibiting LSPs. We use the velocity data in addition to both MACHO and OGLE light curves to examine the properties of the stars, and to evaluate models for the cause of LSPs. Extant models generally involve either binarity or pulsation. We show that both of these have severe problems explaining the light and velocity variations. However, new mid-infrared observations of stars with LSPs indicate the presence of a significant amount of circumstellar dust, most likely in a disk-like configuration. The Magellanic System represents one of the best places to study the formation and evolution of galaxies. Photometric surveys of various depths, areas and wavelengths have had a significant impact on our understanding of the system; however, a complete picture is still lacking. VMC (the VISTA near-infrared YJKs survey of the Magellanic System) will provide new data to derive the spatially resolved star formation history and to construct a three-dimensional map of the system. We have observed five carbon-rich AGB stars in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, using the Infrared Spectrometer on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The stars were selected from a near-infrared survey of Fornax and include the three reddest stars, with presumably the highest mass-loss rates, in that galaxy. Such carbon stars probably belong to the intermediate-age population (2-8 Gyr old and metallicity of [Fe/H] -1) of Fornax. The primary aim of this paper is to investigate mass-loss rate, as a function of luminosity and metallicity, by comparing AGB stars in several galaxies with different metallicities. The spectra of three stars are fitted with a radiative transfer model. We find that mass-loss rates of these three stars are 4-7x10^-6 Msun yr-1. The other two stars have mass-loss rates below 1.3x10^-6 Msun yr-1. We find no evidence that these rates depend on metallicity, although we do suggest that the gas-to-dust ratio could be higher than at solar metallicity, in the range 240 to 800. The C2H2 bands are stronger at lower metallicity because of the higher C/O ratio. In contrast, the SiC fraction is reduced at low metallicity, due to low silicon abundance. The total mass-loss rate from all known carbon-rich AGB stars into the interstellar medium of this galaxy is of the order of 2x10^-5 Msun yr-1. This is much lower than that of the dwarf irregular galaxy WLM, which has a similar visual luminosity and metallicity. The difference is attributed to the younger stellar population of WLM. The suppressed gas-return rate to the ISM accentuates the difference between the relatively gas-rich dwarf irregular and the gas-poor dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We investigate the intermediate-age asymptotic giant branch stellar population of two Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies to characterize their carbon star population in near-infrared (IR). Our work is based on J and K-band SOFI near-IR photometry complemented with optical ground based and HST photometry. We show that near-IR photometry is a very powerful tool for carbon star detection. We recovered two out of three previously-known carbon stars in DDO 210 and discovered six additional objects in this galaxy which have optical and near-IR colors consistent with carbon giants. This brings the total number of bona-fide C-star candidates in DDO 210 to nine. We detected a large population of C-star candidates in SagDIG, 18 of which were previously identified in Demers & Battinelli (2002) and Cook (1987), and six new bona-fide carbon stars. We present the first thermal-infrared spectra of an extra-galactic Young Stellar Object (YSO), IRAS05328-6827 in the HII region LHA 120-N148 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observed and modelled spectral energy distribution reveals a massive YSO, M=20 Msun, which is heavily-embedded and probably still accreting. The reduced dust content as a consequence of the lower metallicity of the LMC allows a unique view into this object, and together with a high C/O ratio may be responsible for the observed low abundance of water ice and relatively high abundances of methanol and CO2 ices., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters. 5 pages, 5 figures

With the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma we made IJKs observations of an area of about 40'x30' of the Local Group galaxy Draco. This allows us to describe Draco's late-type stellar population across the whole galaxy at a photometric level 2 mag deeper than the 2MASS survey. We detected the red giant branch (RGB) and measured the magnitude of the tip of the RGB in the three bands. From that in the I band we obtain a distance modulus of (m-M)_0=19.49+/-0.06(stat)+/-0.15(sys), in excellent agreement with a measurement from RR Lyrae stars. The peak of the (J-Ks)_0 histogram at different M_Ks suggests that Draco has a mean [Fe/H]=-1.95+/-1.26 while fiducial RGB tracks of Galactic globular clusters indicate a mean [Fe/H]=-1.33+/-0.72 where the error corresponds to the spread around the mean value. There are significant differences between the colour-magnitude diagrams of stars in the inner, medium and outer areas of the galaxy. A metal poor (Z=0.0004) intermediate-age population (about 1.6 Gyr old) is clearly present and emerges in particular between 6' and 12' from the centre of the galaxy. A few additional carbon star candidates have been identified from both their location in the colour-magnitude diagram and from an indication of variability. We have been recently faced with the problem of cross--identifying stars recorded in historical catalogues with those extracted from recent fully digitized surveys (such as DENIS and 2MASS). Positions mentioned in the old catalogues are frequently of poor precision, but are generally accompanied by finding charts where the interesting objects are flagged. Those finding charts are sometimes our only link with the accumulated knowledge of past literature. While checking the identification of some of these objects in several catalogues, we had the surprise to discover a number of discrepancies in recent works.The main reason for these discrepancies was generally the blind application of the smallest difference in position as the criterion to identify sources from one historical catalogue to those in more recent surveys. In this paper we give examples of such misidentifications, and show how we were able to find and correct them.We present modern procedures to discover and solve cross--identification problems, such as loading digitized images of the sky through the Aladin service at CDS, and overlaying entries from historical catalogues and modern surveys. We conclude that the use of good finding charts still remains the ultimate (though time--consuming) tool to ascertain cross--identifications in difficult cases., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, accepted by A&A

Regions of different metallicity have been identified in the Magellanic Clouds by using the ratio between Asymptotic Giant Branch stars of spectral type C and M. In the Large Magellanic Cloud the ratio appears to decrease radially while in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) there is no clear trend, reflecting either the large extension of the SMC along the line of sight or a more complex star formation history. The distribution of the C/M ratio is clumpy and corresponds to a spread in [Fe/H] of 0.75 dex in both Clouds. We have compiled the near infrared Point Source Catalogue (PSC) towards the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) extracted from the data obtained with the Deep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky - DENIS (Epchtein et al. 1997). The catalogue covers an area of of 19.87* 16 square degrees centered on (RA, DEC)=(5h27m20s, -69o00'00'') for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 14.7* 10 square degrees centered on (RA, DEC)=(h02m40s, -73o00'00'' for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) at the epoch J2000. It contains about 1300000 sources towards the LMC and 300000 sources towards the SMC each detected in at least 2 of the 3 photometric bands involved in the survey (I, J, Ks). 70% of the detected sources are true members of the Magellanic Clouds, respectively and consist mainly of red giants, asymptotic giant branch stars and super-giants. The Magellanic system comprises the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and the less frequently observed Magellanic Bridge and Magellanic Stream. The Bridge is traced by neutral gas and has an observed stellar component, while the Stream consists of gas only, with no observed stellar counterpart to date. This study uses catalogues created in the direction of the Bridge from 2MASS and WISE to investigate the stellar content of the Magellanic Bridge. Catalogues were created and colour-magnitude and two colour diagrams were analysed. A study was also carried out on removing the Galactic foreground population in the direction of the Magellanic Bridge, which was an important consideration due to the low stellar density within the Bridge. This study finds that the Magellanic Bridge contains a candidate older stellar population in addition to the younger population already known. The formation of the Magellanic Bridge is likely to have occurred from a tidal event between the LMC and SMC drawing most of the material into it from the SMC. Aims: We calibrate spectroscopically the C- versus (vs.) M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star selection made using near-IR photometry, and investigate the spatial distribution of the C/M ratio in NGC 6822, based on low resolution spectroscopy and near-IR photometry. Methods: We obtained low resolution multi-object spectroscopy with the VIMOS instrument at the ESO VLT of ~ 800 stars in seven fields centred on NGC 6822. The spectroscopic classification of giant stars in NGC 6822 and foreground dwarf contaminants was made by comparing more than 500 good quality spectra with the spectroscopic atlas of Turnshek et al. (1985). The sample of spectroscopically confirmed AGB stars in NGC 6822 is divided into C- and M-rich giants to constrain the C vs. M AGB star selection criteria based on photometry. The larger near-IR photometric sample is then used to investigate the C/M ratio gradients across the galaxy. Results: We present the largest catalogue of near-IR photometry and spectra of AGB stars in NGC 6822 with 150 C-stars and 122 M-stars. Seventy-nine percent of the C-stars in our catalogue are redder than (J-K)0=1.2 mag, and 12% are brighter than K0=16.45 mag and bluer than (J-K)0=1.2 mag. The remaining 9% are mixed with the M-type AGB stars, 88% of which have colours J-H0>0.73 mag and (J-K)0 between 0.9 mag and 1.2 mag. The remainder are mixed with dwarfs and C-type stars.
