Objective: In this study, we investigated self-weighing frequency (SWF) among adults during the COVID-19 pandemic and retrospectively (6 months) before the pandemic, and whether SWF was associated with changes in health-related behaviors. Methods: United States adults (N = 1607) completed a health-related questionnaire during COVID-19 and associated shelter-in-place. We categorized respondents into 4 groups of SWF at the time of the pandemic: "Never," "< 1x a week," "1x a week," or "> 1x a week." Results: The proportion of adults never weighing increased during the pandemic (15% to 25%), whereas the proportion of those weighing < 1x week went down (41% to 29%). Higher SWF was significantly associated with changes in energy expenditure including increased total physical activity (PA), lower likelihood of decreases in vigorous, moderate, and walking PA, and a lower likelihood of sitting more. More frequent self-weighing also was associated statistically with lower likelihood of keeping unhealthy eating behaviors the same. Conversely, there was no significant difference in changes in alcohol, caffeine, takeout, fruit or vegetable consumption, and television viewing among SWF groups. Conclusion: SWF decreased during the pandemic in the lower 2 SWF categories. Higher SWF was associated with fewer negative changes in health behaviors, especially related to PA.

Background: Individuals' social networks exert a strong influence on alcohol use, but valid assessment of network drinking behavior is typically lengthy and high in participant burden. The aim of this study was to validate the Brief Alcohol Social Density Assessment (BASDA), an efficient measure of perceived alcohol use within a person's social network, in a sample of adult drinkers from the general community. Specifically, the convergent, criterion-related, incremental validity and internal validity were investigated by examining the BASDA in relation to other established measures of drinking motives, weekly drinking level, and severity of involvement., Methods: Participants were 903 (56% female) adults who reported drinking in the last year and who completed the BASDA, the Drinking Motives Questionnaire, the Daily Drinking Questionnaire, and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT)., Results: Significant positive correlations were found between the BASDA and drinking motives, drinking quantity, and the AUDIT (rs = 0.21 to 0.51, ps < 0.001), providing support for convergent validity. There was a significantly higher BASDA score for those scoring at or above an AUDIT cutoff for hazardous drinking (p < 0.001), providing support for criterion-related validity. Finally, beyond motives and covariates, the BASDA was significantly associated with total AUDIT score (ΔR 2  = 0.09, p < 0.001), indicating its additive contribution and providing support for incremental validity. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed excellent fit, and all items significantly loaded onto a single factor (p < 0.0001), providing evidence of internal validity. The resulting alcohol social density latent variable was significantly and robustly associated with drinks per week and AUDIT total score., Conclusions: These findings provide further support for the BASDA as a valid and efficient measure of social network alcohol density for understanding social influences on alcohol misuse., (© 2019 by the Research Society on Alcoholism.)

Objectives: In this study, we investigated self-weighing frequency (SWF) among adults and whether SWF was associated with health markers. Methods: We had 533 US adults complete a questionnaire on SWF and other health markers. Respondents were categorized into 4 quartiles of SWF: "Never," "<1x/week," "1x/week," or ">1x/week." Results: Overall, 60.0% of adults weighed <1x/week and 25% never weighed. More frequent self-weighing was associated with less sedentary time, more vigorous physical activity (PA) and several healthier practices including reading nutrition labels, eating whole grains, drinking less soda, self-monitoring of food, PA and weight change, and consuming lower- or no-calorie beverages and sweeteners. Conversely, there was no difference in BMI, age, stress, education, sleep, screen time, or chronic diseases between SWF quartiles. Conclusion: Whereas SWF was associated with some markers of health including vigorous PA and some healthier dietary habits, SWF was not linked to BMI, stress, sleep, or chronic diseases.

Objective: Holiday weight gain is reported to be 0.4 to 1.5 kg and may contribute to annual weight gain. The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of daily self-weighing (DSW) using visual graphical feedback (GF) to prevent holiday weight gain., Methods: A total of 111 adults were randomly assigned into a control or DSW + GF group and completed the preholiday visit (v1; before Thanksgiving), the postholiday visit (v2; after New Year's Day), and the follow-up visit (v3; 14 weeks after v2). The participants in the DSW + GF group performed DSW with Wi-Fi scales during the holidays and were told to try not to gain weight above baseline weight., Results: There was no change in weight with DSW + GF, whereas the control group gained weight from v1 to v2 (-0.13 ± 0.27 kg vs. 2.65 ± 0.33 kg, P < 0.001, respectively). In the control group, weight change was similar between individuals with overweight or obesity (OW/OB) versus individuals with normal weight (2.71 ± 0.48 kg vs. 2.62 ± 0.43 kg, not significant, respectively). For DSW + GF, individuals with OW/OB lost weight whereas those with normal weight maintained weight during the holidays (-1.46 ± 0.62 kg vs. 0.33 ± 0.27 kg, P = 0.01, respectively). The control group lost weight during the follow-up (-1.14 ± 0.43 kg, P = 0.01; v2 to v3) but retained 57% of weight gain; therefore, weight gain from v1 to v3 was significant (1.51 ± 0.39 kg, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: DSW + GF was a successful approach to prevent holiday weight gain, with those with OW/OB responding most favorably to DSW + GF., (© 2019 The Obesity Society.)

Background: To examine dyadic relationships between depressive symptoms and family functioning in families of pediatric cancer survivors. Methods Sixty-four adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors and their caregivers self-reported on depressive symptoms and family functioning. Multilevel modeling analyses were used to test actor–partner interdependence models., Results: Significant actor effects of depressive symptoms on domains of family functioning were found for AYAs and their caregivers. Only caregivers’ depressive symptoms exerted a significant effect on AYAs’ report of family cohesion, indicating the presence of significant partner effects for AYAs., Conclusions: AYAs’ and caregivers’ depressive symptoms are related to poorer family functioning. Caregivers’ perceptions of depressive symptoms relate not only to their own perceptions of family functioning but also to that of their children. These findings begin to map the complex relationships that exist between AYAs and their caregivers and elucidate some of the mechanisms through which caregiver-related variables affect AYA outcomes.

Good self-control has been linked to adaptive outcomes such as better health, cohesive personal relationships, success in the workplace and at school, and less susceptibility to crime and addictions. In contrast, self-control failure is linked to maladaptive outcomes. Understanding the mechanisms by which self-control predicts behavior may assist in promoting better regulation and outcomes. A popular approach to understanding self-control is the strength or resource depletion model. Self-control is conceptualized as a limited resource that becomes depleted after a period of exertion resulting in self-control failure. The model has typically been tested using a sequential-task experimental paradigm, in which people completing an initial self-control task have reduced self-control capacity and poorer performance on a subsequent task, a state known as ego depletion Although a meta-analysis of ego-depletion experiments found a medium-sized effect, subsequent meta-analyses have questioned the size and existence of the effect and identified instances of possible bias. The analyses served as a catalyst for the current Registered Replication Report of the ego-depletion effect. Multiple laboratories (k = 23, total N = 2,141) conducted replications of a standardized ego-depletion protocol based on a sequential-task paradigm by Sripada et al. Meta-analysis of the studies revealed that the size of the ego-depletion effect was small with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) that encompassed zero (d = 0.04, 95% CI [-0.07, 0.15]. In the current paper, the authors posit that trait self-esteem moderates the relationship between social rejection and decrements in self-control, propose an information-processing account of trait self-esteem's moderating influence and discuss three tests of this theory. The authors measured trait self-esteem, experimentally manipulated social rejection and assessed subsequent self-control in Studies 1 and 2. Additionally, Study 3 framed a self-control task as diagnostic of social skills to examine motivational influences. Together, the results reveal that rejection impairs self-control, but only among low self-esteem individuals. Moreover, this decrement in self-control only emerged when the task had no social implications-suggesting that low self-esteem individuals exert effort on tasks of social value and are otherwise preoccupied with belonging needs when completing nonsocial tasks.

Background/context: Efforts to improve student achievement should increase graduation rates. However, work investigating the effects of student-level accountability has consistently demonstrated that increases in the standards for high school graduation are correlated with increases in dropout rates. The most favored explanation for this finding is that high-stakes testing policies that mandate grade repetition and high school exit exams may be the tipping point for students who are already struggling academically. These extra demands may, in fact, push students out of school., Purpose/objective/focus: This article examines two hypotheses regarding the relation between school-level accountability and dropout rates. The first posits that improvements in school performance lead to improved success for everyone. If school-level accountability systems improve a school for all students, then the proportion of students performing at grade level increases, and the dropout rate decreases. The second hypothesis posits that schools facing pressure to improve their overall accountability score may pursue this increase at the cost of other student outcomes, including dropout rate., Research Design: Our approach focuses on the dynamic relation between school-level academic achievement and dropout rates over time-that is, between one year's achievement and the subsequent year's dropout rate, and vice versa. This article employs longitudinal data of records on all students in North Carolina public schools over an 8-year period. Analyses employ fixed-effects models clustering schools and districts within years and controls each year for school size, percentage of students who were free/reduced-price lunch eligible, percentage of students who are ethnic minorities, and locale., Findings/results: This study finds partial evidence that improvements in school-level academic performance will lead to improvements (i.e., decreases) in school-level dropout rates. Schools with improved performance saw decreased dropout rates following these successes. However, we find more evidence of a negative side of the quest for improved academic performance. When dropout rates increase, the performance composites in subsequent years increase., Conclusions/recommendations: Accountability systems need to remove any indirect benefit a school may receive from increasing its dropout rate. Schools should be held accountable for those who drop out of school. Given the personal and social costs of dropping out, accountability systems need to place more emphasis on dropout prevention. Such an emphasis could encompass increasing the dropout age and having the school's performance composite include scores of zero on end-of-grade tests for those who leave school.
