A succinct non-interactive argument of knowledge (SNARK) enables a party to convince another of some statement (typically, knowledge of some information) by means of a short argument, while ensuring it is infeasible for an adversary to create a short argument of the opposite statement. We hereby describe a SNARK for CSI-FiSh signatures, whose security stems from hard problems involving supersingular isogenies. Although the scheme looks analogous to a SNARK for conventional Schnorr signatures, it is non-trivial in that, as we also show, a similar SNARK for another isogeny-based signature scheme (SQISign) is not viable. As a bonus, we also discuss how to drastically reduce the memory needed to implement the CSIDH framework required by CSI-FiSh signatures.

Criptografia baseada em isogenias supersingulares constitui uma das famílias mais recentes dentre as propostas resistentes a ataques com computadores quânticos. Destaca-se sua baixa ocupação de banda em comparação a outros protocolos de acordo de chave, potencializada pela possibilidade de compressão de chaves ao custo de uma sobrecarga significativa no tempo de processamento. Neste trabalho, sugerem-se técnicas eficientes para minimizar os principais gargalos de processamento envolvidos na compressão e descompressão de chaves. Em conjunto, essas técnicas produzem ganhos observados de até três vezes em relação aos melhores resultados de técnicas anteriormente propostas.

Fetal stage is a critical developmental window for the skeletal muscle, but little information is available about the impact of maternal vitamin D (Vit. D) deficiency (VDD) on offspring lean mass development in the adult life of male and female animals.Female rats (Wistar Hannover) were fed either a control (1000 IU Vit. D3/kg) or a VDD diet (0 IU Vit. D3/kg) for 6 weeks and during gestation and lactation. At weaning, male and female offspring were randomly separated and received a standard diet up to 180 days old.Vitamin D deficiency induced muscle atrophy in the male (M-VDD) offspring at the end of weaning, an effect that was reverted along the time. Following 180 days, fast-twitch skeletal muscles [extensor digitorum longus (EDL)] from the M-VDD showed a decrease (20%; P 0.05) in the number of total fibres but an increase in the cross-sectional area of IIB (17%; P 0.05), IIA (19%; P 0.05) and IIAX (21%; P 0.05) fibres. The fibre hypertrophy was associated with the higher protein levels of MyoD (73%; P 0.05) and myogenin (55% %; P 0.05) and in the number of satellite cells (128.8 ± 14 vs. 91 ± 7.6 nuclei Pax7 + in the M-CTRL; P 0.05). M-VDD increased time to fatigue during ex vivo contractions of EDL muscles and showed an increase in the phosphorylation levels of IGF-1/insulin receptor and their downstream targets related to anabolic processes and myogenic activation, including SerThese data show that maternal VDD selectively affects the development of type-II muscle fibres in male offspring rats but not in female offspring rats and suggest that the enhancement of their size and fatigue resistance in fast-twitch skeletal muscle (EDL) is probably due to a compensatory increase in the muscle content of Vit. D in the adult age.

Although it is well established that urocortin 2 (Ucn2), a peptide member of the corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) family, and its specific corticotrophin-releasing factor 2 receptor (CRF2R) are highly expressed in skeletal muscle, the role of this peptide in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass and protein metabolism remains elusive.To elucidate the mechanisms how Ucn2 directly controls protein metabolism in skeletal muscles of normal mice, we carried out genetic tools, physiological and molecular analyses of muscles in vivo and in vitro.Here, we demonstrated that Ucn2 overexpression activated cAMP signaling and promoted an expressive muscle hypertrophy associated with higher rates of protein synthesis and activation of Akt/mTOR and ERK1/2 signaling pathways. Furthermore, Ucn2 induced a decrease in mRNA levels of atrogin-1 and in autophagic flux inferred by an increase in the protein content of LC3-I, LC3-II and p62. Accordingly, Ucn2 reduced both the transcriptional activity of FoxO in vivo and the overall protein degradation in vitro through an inhibition of lysosomal proteolytic activity. In addition, we demonstrated that Ucn2 induced a fast-to-slow fiber type shift and improved fatigue muscle resistance, an effect that was completely blocked in muscles co-transfected with mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase 1 (MKP-1), but not with dominant-negative Akt mutant (Aktmt).These data suggest that Ucn2 triggers an anabolic and anti-catabolic response in skeletal muscle of normal mice probably through the activation of cAMP cascade and participation of Akt and ERK1/2 signaling. These findings open new perspectives in the development of therapeutic strategies to cope with the loss of muscle mass.

Supersingular isogeny-based cryptography is one of the more recent families of post-quantum proposals. An interesting feature is the comparatively low bandwidth occupation in key agreement protocols, which stems from the possibility of key compression. However, compression and decompression introduce a significant overhead to the overall processing cost despite recent progress. In this paper we address the main processing bottlenecks involved in key compression and decompression, and suggest substantial improvements for each of them. Some of our techniques may have an independent interest for other, more conventional areas of elliptic curve cryptography as well.

Panic Attacks (PAs) and Panic Disorder (PD) represent a heavy burden not only because of the difficulty in distinguishing them from other pathologies and in treating them appropriately but also because of their impact on public health worldwide. In Europe, PD constitutes one of the five most common mental disorders adversely affecting quality of life.The aim of this study is to evaluate the period prevalence of visits to the Emergency Departments of the University Hospital of Verona (North East of Italy) over the period between 2012-2016 because of symptoms of PAs or PD in order to quantify the burden of the disorder.This study was carried out by retrospectively collecting data from the medical records of all the patients assessed at the Emergency Departments (EDs) of the Verona Hospital because of symptoms of PAs or PD over a 5-year period (1 January 2012 - 31 December 2016). The search words used in reviewing the medical records registered in the hospital discharge reports from the Gynecological, Pediatric and General Medicine Emergency Departments were: "Anxiety" and/or "Panic". A multiple logistic regression model was also created to evaluate the predictors of ED visits for PAs or PD over the period that was investigated.The study identified 3,771 cases of PAs or PD; 62.3% were females and 37.7% were males. The female-to-male ratio was 1.7:1. The mean age was 44 years (46 for the females and 41 for the males). The majority of the patients fell into two age categories: 30 to 39 (20.6%) and 40 to 49 (23.8%). The proportion of visits to the EDs for PAs or PD was approximately 20% per year, with an average of approximately 754 patients visiting the EDs every year. The period prevalence of accesses for PAs or PD over the five year period studied in the mean resident population (1.4%) and the mean visits to the EDs (2.5%) were calculated. Study results showed that the majority of the patients (80.9%) were referred to their general practitioner (GP) at the end of the assessment protocol at the EDs. According to the regression logistic model, the following variables were significant (p0.05) risk factors for PAs or PD: being female vs. male (OR 1.899; 95% CI 1.785-2.020), being Italian vs. Foreigner (OR 1.292; 95% CI 1.174-1.421), having a white or green priority code at arrival (low urgency) vs. the other ones (OR 1.195; 95% CI 1.100-1.297), and being aged ≤42 years old (OR 1.091; 95% CI 1.024-1.161).The role of the GP is crucial in the management of PD and PAs. Given the difficulty of implementing primary and secondary prevention programs for these conditions, public health officials should make every effort to promote tertiary prevention in order to reduce the burden of the ailment and societal cost.

We evaluated the structural/functional characteristics of the arterial wall in a cohort of hypertensives with well-controlled blood pressure (BP) levels. We studied 40 hypertensives with well-controlled BP. We assessed by B-mode ultrasound the mean intima-media thickness (mean-IMT) and maximum-IMT (M-MAX) of carotid artery (common, bulb, internal) bilaterally. Endothelial function was evaluated by post-occlusion flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery. Along with traditional risk factors, we studied the impact of serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and osteoprotegerin (OPG). Forty normotensive subjects served as controls. In the hypertensives, the BP levels were well controlled (office BP: 129/79 mm Hg, ambulatory BP monitoring: 121/75 mm Hg). Compared with controls, higher BP levels and body mass index were present in hypertensives, whereas age and metabolic parameters were similar. In hypertensives, the IMT (mean-IMT 0.68 mm, M-MAX 0.81 mm) was significantly higher than in controls (mean-IMT 0.60 mm, M-MAX 0.71 mm). FMD was impaired in hypertensives (5.9%) compared with controls (9.2%). In multivariate analyses, it turned out that in hypertensives IMT parameters were related to age, hs-CRP and OPG. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol was the only factor related to FMD. IMT and FMD had no relationship with BP levels. In conclusion, in hypertensives with well-controlled BP, the pro-atherogenic remodelling (IMT) is mainly dependent on age and the inflammatory cytokines, OPG in particular. The functional impairment of the arterial wall (FMD) was related to the levels of LDL cholesterol. Under these conditions, when the impact of BP is minimized, the role of inflammatory cytokines and lipids on structural/functional remodelling becomes predominant.

Resume Objectifs Evaluer la progression de l’atherosclerose infra-clinique chez les patients ayant un rhumatisme psoriasique (RP) traites avec un agent anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α). Methode Trente-deux patients ayant un RP repondant aux criteres Caspar et participant a l’unite de rhumatologie du centre medical de l’universite de Padoue furent enroles dans une etude observationnelle prospective de 2 ans. En accord avec les recommandations ASAS/EULAR sur le traitement, furent prescrits des agents biologiques (etanercept [n = 21] adalimumab [n = 6], infliximab [n = 5]). Les lipides sanguins, les marqueurs biologiques d’inflammation comprenant C-reactive proteine (CRP), interleukine 6 (IL-6), vessel endothelium growth factor (VEGF), osteoprotegerine (OPG) et TNF-α ainsi que le Disease Activity Score 28 calcule avec la CRP (DAS 28 -CRP) furent evalues a l’inclusion et apres 2 ans de traitement. Une mesure echographique en mode B bilaterale des carotides (epaisseur intima-media moyenne [EIM moyenne], la moyenne de l’EIM maxima [M-Max] de chaque segment de l’artere carotide [primitive, bulbe, artere carotide interne]) ainsi que la dilatation par le flux post occlusion (flow mediated dilatation [FMD]) de l’artere brachiale furent aussi evaluees a l’inclusion et apres 2 ans. Aim of this study was to evaluate in a long follow-up the carotid artery remodelling in a cohort of young hypertensive subjects having good blood pressure (BP) control. We studied 20 grade I hypertensives (HT) by assessing the B-mode ultrasound of mean carotid intima-media thickness (mean-IMT) and maximum IMT (M-MAX) in each carotid artery segment (common, bulb, internal), bilaterally. We compared their ultrasound measurements with those recorded 5 and 10 years earlier. While the first 5-year follow-up was observational, in the second 5-year follow-up, lifestyle modifications and/or pharmacological therapy were started to obtain well-controlled BP levels. Office BP was measured at the time of the ultrasound studies and every 6 months during the follow-up. BP levels were: 10 years 144/91 mmHg, 5 years 143/90 mmHg and 129 ± 79 mmHg at the time of the study. Background: Residual cardiovascular risk (RCVR) is an emerging issue in the clinical and therapeutic management of patients affected by hypertension. In fact, a number of clinical studies showed that even in case of optimal blood pressure (BP) control, the hypertensive patients still carry a sizeable increase in the CV risk as compared to normotensive individuals. Methods: We will review the clinical evidence about the determinants and the impact of RCVR on hypertension, with a specific focus on the progression of vascular damage. Results: The presence of RCVR in hypertensive patients is a significant phenomenon which challenges our clinical effort far beyond the reaching of BP targets. Although major determinants of RCVR are still undefined, there is a clear indication about the importance of an early and sustained control of BP values, so as to prevent the onset of target organ damage. In fact, our data and findings from the literature indicate that the "pseudo-normalization" of BP is not sufficient to abolish the risk of pro-atherogenic remodeling of arterial vessels. Conclusion: Additional studies are needed to establish whether the intervention on specific BP profiles and inflammatory mechanisms can have some clinical relevance in the management of RCVR. In the meanwhile, the precise phenotyping of the CV risk profile of each patient, coupled with a tailored pharmacological approach, represents the most effective strategy to hinder the progression of vascular damage and reduce the RCVR.

Pairings are typically implemented using ordinary pairing-friendly elliptic curves. The two input groups of the pairing function are groups of elliptic curve points, while the target group lies in the multiplicative group of a large finite field. At moderate levels of security, at least two of the three pairing groups are necessarily proper subgroups of a much larger composite-order group, which makes pairing implementations potentially susceptible to small-subgroup attacks. To minimize the chances of such attacks, or the effort required to thwart them, we put forward a property for ordinary pairing-friendly curves called subgroup security. We point out that existing curves in the literature and in publicly available pairing libraries fail to achieve this notion, and propose a list of replacement curves that do offer subgroup security. These curves were chosen to drop into existing libraries with minimal code change, and to sustain state-of-the-art performance numbers. In fact, there are scenarios in which the replacement curves could facilitate faster implementations of protocols because they can remove the need for expensive group exponentiations that test subgroup membership.

We studied the impact of hypertension along with traditional and new cardiovascular risk factors on the structural and functional properties of arteries in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients. We examined 42 PsA subjects (aged 51±9 years) stratified according to hypertensive status (19 normotensive, PsA-NT and 23 hypertensives, PsA-HT). Thirty-eight normotensive subjects (C-NT) and 23 hypertensives (C-HT) comparable by age and sex served as controls. Mean carotid intima-media thickness (mean-IMT) and mean of the maximum IMT (M-Max) were evaluated by ultrasound in carotid artery segment bilaterally. Post-occlusion flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery was evaluated by ultrasonography. These parameters were correlated with risk factors, markers of inflammation and disease activity. Values of mean-IMT were higher in both groups of PsA patients compared with C-NT (0.68 mm in PsA-NT and 0.75 mm in PsA-HT versus 0.61 mm in C-NT). PsA-HT displayed higher M-Max (0.95 mm) versus both C-HT (0.71 mm) and PsA-NT (0.79 mm). FMD was impaired in PsA subjects compared with C-NT (5.7% in PsA-NT and 6.0% PsA-HT versus 9.3% in C-NT), whereas there was no difference among PsA-HT, PsA-NT, and C-HT groups. Values of carotid IMT were directly related to tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, osteoprotegerin (OPG), blood pressure and lipid profile levels. FMD showed an inverse relationship with TNF-α and blood pressure, but no correlation with lipids. In conclusion, PsA per se implies a pro-atherogenic remodeling, which is enhanced by the hypertensive status. TNF-α and OPG may have an independent role in the development of such vascular damage.

a b s t r a c t Objective: To evaluate the progression of subclinical atherosclerosis in Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) patients treated with anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- agents. Methods: Thirty-two PsA patients classified according to the CASPAR criteria and attending the Rheuma- tology Unit of the University of Padua Medical Center were enrolled in a two-year prospective, observational study. In accordance with the ASAS/EULAR recommendations on the management of these patients, those studied were prescribed biological agents (etanercept (n = 21), adalimumab (n = 6), inflix- imab (n = 5)). Plasma lipids, inflammatory biomarkers, including C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), vessel endothelium growth factor (VEGF), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and TNF-, as well as Disease Activity Score 28 calculated with CRP (DAS 28-CRP) were evaluated at baseline and after two years of treatment. Bilateral carotid B-mode ultrasound measurements (the mean-intima media thickness (mean- IMT), the mean maximum-IMT (M-Max)) of each carotid artery segment (common, bulb, and internal carotid artery) and the post-occlusion flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery were also assessed at baseline and after two years. Results: Despite an improvement in the DAS 28-CRP score (P < 0.0005) and lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < 0.013) and triglyceride (P < 0.036) values, there was a significant progression in both the mean-IMT (P < 0.0005) and M-Max (P < 0.0005). Moreover, no recovery in FMD (P = ns) was observed after two years of anti TNF- treatment. Serum TNF- levels were increased (P = 0.003) and OPG values were decreased (P = 0.011) at the end of follow- up with respect to baseline values. Phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibition reduces skeletal muscle atrophy, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. We used microdialysis to investigate the effects of different PDE inhibitors on interstitial tyrosine concentration as well as proteolytic activity and atrogenes expression in isolated rat muscle. Rolipram, a PDE-4-selective inhibitor, reduced the interstitial tyrosine concentration and rates of muscle protein degradation. The rolipram-induced muscle cAMP increase was accompanied by a decrease in ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) activity and atrogin-1 mRNA, a ubiquitin-ligase involved in muscle atrophy. This effect was not associated with Akt phosphorylation but was partially blocked by a protein kinase A inhibitor. Fasting increased atrogin-1, MuRF-1 and LC3b expression, and these effects were markedly suppressed by rolipram. Our data suggest that activation of cAMP signaling by PDE-4 blockade leads to inhibition of UPS activity and atrogenes expression independently of Akt. These findings are important for identifying novel approaches to attenuate muscle atrophy.

Achyrocline satureioides ("marcela del campo") is native to America. Numerous investigations have reported several bioactive properties such as anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial and antiviral. Nowadays, few medicinal plants have been scientifically evaluated to test its safety, efficacy and potential benefits, despite the great public interest in these herbs. The aim of this work was to evaluate the cytotoxic and genotoxic activities of cold aqueous extract obtained from A. satureioides using Allium cepa L test. The results demonstrated the absence of genotoxicity of the extract. Only higher concentrations induced cytotoxicity but interestingly this effect was reversible and was not associated with mutagenicity. The contribution of this research provides assurance of safety in the application of Achyrocline satureioides in treatment of microbial diseases and other pathologies helping to define selective toxicity.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), correlated with some traditional risk factors of atherosclerosis and with PsA-related disease factors. Methods: Forty-one patients and 41 healthy subjects were evaluated for intima-media thickness (IMT) and flow-mediated dilation (FMD), using carotid duplex scanning. IMT values were expressed like IMT mean (cumulative mean of all the IMT mean) and M-MAX (cumulative mean of all the higher IMT). Subclinical atherosclerosis markers were correlated with age, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure in both groups, with duration of arthritis, duration of psoriasis, tender and swollen joints, BASDAI (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index), BASFI (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients. This study investigated the in vivo effects of the Bothrops jararaca venom (BjV) on general metabolic profile and, specifically, on muscle protein metabolism in rats. The crude venom (0.4 mg/kg body weight, IV) was infused in awake rats, and plasma activity of enzymes and metabolites levels were determined after 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours. BjV increased urea, lactate, and activities of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and aspartate aminotransferase after 4 hours. The content of liver glycogen was reduced by BjV. Protein metabolism was evaluated by means of microdialysis technique and in isolated muscles. BjV induced increase in the muscle interstitial-arterial tyrosine concentration difference, indicating a high protein catabolism. The myotoxicity induced by this venom is associated with reduction of protein synthesis and increase in rates of overall proteolysis, which was accompanied by activation of lysosomal and ubiquitin-proteasome systems without changes in protein levels of cathepsins and ubiquitin-protein conjugates.

The antiviral activity of alcoholic extracts of several species belonging to the Asteraceae, Labiatae, Plantaginaceae, Schizaceae, Umbelliferae, Usneaceae and Verbenaceae families has been studied. The tests were carried out in Vero celís-pseudorabies virus strain RC/79 (herpes suis virus) system. Eight plant extracts (Achyrocline satureioides, Ambrossia tenuifolia, Baccharis articulata, Eupatorium buniifolium, Mynthostachys verticillata, Plantago brasiliensis, Plantago mayor L and Verbascum thapsus) were able to inhibit at least 2 log, the viral infectivity.
