The regulation introduced in 2020 that limits the sulfur content in shipping fuel has reduced sulfur emissions over global open oceans by about 80 %. This is expected to have reduced aerosols that both reflect solar radiation directly and affect cloud properties, with the latter also changing the solar radiation balance. Here we investigate the impacts of this regulation on aerosols and climate in the HadGEM3-GC3.1-LL climate model. The global aerosol effective radiative forcing caused by reduced shipping emissions is estimated to be 0.13 W m−2, which is equivalent to an additional ∼50 % to the net positive forcing resulting from the reduction in all anthropogenic aerosols from the late-20th century to the pre-2020 era. Ensembles of global coupled simulations from 2020–2049 predict a global mean warming of 0.04 K averaged over this period. Our simulations are not clear on whether the global impact is yet to emerge or has already emerged because the present-day impact is masked by variability. Nevertheless, the impact of shipping emission reductions either will have already committed us to warming above the 1.5 K Paris target or will represent an important contribution that may help explain part of the rapid jump in global temperatures over the last 12 months. Consistent with previous aerosol perturbation simulations, the warming is greatest in the Arctic, reaching a mean of 0.15 K Arctic-wide and 0.3 K in the Atlantic sector of the Arctic (which represents a greater than 10 % increase in the total anthropogenic warming since pre-industrial times).

Abstract Ships brighten low marine clouds from emissions of sulfur and aerosols, resulting in visible “ship tracks”. In 2020, new shipping regulations mandated an ∼80% reduction in the allowed fuel sulfur content. Recent observations indicate that visible ship tracks have decreased. Model simulations indicate that since 2020 shipping regulations have induced a net radiative forcing of +0.12 Wm−2. Analysis of recent temperature anomalies indicates Northern Hemisphere surface temperature anomalies in 2022–2023 are correlated with observed cloud radiative forcing and the cloud radiative forcing is spatially correlated with the simulated radiative forcing from the 2020 shipping emission changes. Shipping emissions changes could be accelerating global warming. To better constrain these estimates, better access to ship position data and understanding of ship aerosol emissions are needed. Understanding the risks and benefits of emissions reductions and the difficultly in robust attribution highlights the large uncertainty in attributing proposed deliberate climate intervention.

Aerosol measurements over the Southern Ocean are used to constrain aerosol–cloud interaction radiative forcing (RFaci) uncertainty in a global climate model. Forcing uncertainty is quantified using 1 million climate model variants that sample the uncertainty in nearly 30 model parameters. Measurements of cloud condensation nuclei and other aerosol properties from an Antarctic circumnavigation expedition strongly constrain natural aerosol emissions: default sea spray emissions need to be increased by around a factor of 3 to be consistent with measurements. Forcing uncertainty is reduced by around 7 % using this set of several hundred measurements, which is comparable to the 8 % reduction achieved using a diverse and extensive set of over 9000 predominantly Northern Hemisphere measurements. When Southern Ocean and Northern Hemisphere measurements are combined, uncertainty in RFaci is reduced by 21 %, and the strongest 20 % of forcing values are ruled out as implausible. In this combined constraint, observationally plausible RFaci is around 0.17 W m−2 weaker (less negative) with 95 % credible values ranging from −2.51 to −1.17 W m−2 (standard deviation of −2.18 to −1.46 W m−2). The Southern Ocean and Northern Hemisphere measurement datasets are complementary because they constrain different processes. These results highlight the value of remote marine aerosol measurements.

The effect of observational constraint on the ranges of uncertain physical and chemical process parameters was explored in a global aerosol–climate model. The study uses 1 million variants of the Hadley Centre General Environment Model version 3 (HadGEM3) that sample 26 sources of uncertainty, together with over 9000 monthly aggregated grid-box measurements of aerosol optical depth, PM2.5, particle number concentrations, sulfate and organic mass concentrations. Despite many compensating effects in the model, the procedure constrains the probability distributions of parameters related to secondary organic aerosol, anthropogenic SO2 emissions, residential emissions, sea spray emissions, dry deposition rates of SO2 and aerosols, new particle formation, cloud droplet pH and the diameter of primary combustion particles. Observational constraint rules out nearly 98 % of the model variants. On constraint, the ±1σ (standard deviation) range of global annual mean direct radiative forcing (RFari) is reduced by 33 % to −0.14 to −0.26 W m−2, and the 95 % credible interval (CI) is reduced by 34 % to −0.1 to −0.32 W m−2. For the global annual mean aerosol–cloud radiative forcing, RFaci, the ±1σ range is reduced by 7 % to −1.66 to −2.48 W m−2, and the 95 % CI by 6 % to −1.28 to −2.88 W m−2. The tightness of the constraint is limited by parameter cancellation effects (model equifinality) as well as the large and poorly defined “representativeness error” associated with comparing point measurements with a global model. The constraint could also be narrowed if model structural errors that prevent simultaneous agreement with different measurement types in multiple locations and seasons could be improved. For example, constraints using either sulfate or PM2.5 measurements individually result in RFari±1σ ranges that only just overlap, which shows that emergent constraints based on one measurement type may be overconfident.

Abstract Tropospheric aerosol radiative forcing has persisted for many years as one of the major causes of uncertainty in global climate model simulations. To sample the range of plausible aerosol and atmospheric states and perform robust statistical analyses of the radiative forcing, it is important to account for the combined effects of many sources of model uncertainty, which is rarely done due to the high computational cost. This paper describes the designs of two ensembles of the Met Office Hadley Centre Global Environment Model‐U.K. Chemistry and Aerosol global climate model and provides the first analyses of the uncertainties in aerosol radiative forcing and their causes. The first ensemble was designed to comprehensively sample uncertainty in the aerosol state, while the other samples additional uncertainties in the physical model related to clouds, humidity, and radiation, thereby allowing an analysis of uncertainty in the aerosol effective radiative forcing. Each ensemble consists of around 200 simulations of the preindustrial and present‐day atmospheres. The uncertainty in aerosol radiative forcing in our ensembles is comparable to the range of estimates from multimodel intercomparison projects. The mean aerosol effective radiative forcing is −1.45 W/m2 (credible interval of −2.07 to −0.81 W/m2), which encompasses but is more negative than the −1.17 W/m2 in the 2013 Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Model Intercomparison Project and −0.90 W/m2 in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report. The ensembles can be used to reduce aerosol radiative forcing uncertainty by challenging them with multiple measurements as well as to isolate potential causes of multimodel differences.

A total of 16 global chemistry transport models and general circulation models have participated in this study; 14 models have been evaluated with regard to their ability to reproduce the near-surface observed number concentration of aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), as well as derived cloud droplet number concentration (CDNC). Model results for the period 2011–2015 are compared with aerosol measurements (aerosol particle number, CCN and aerosol particle composition in the submicron fraction) from nine surface stations located in Europe and Japan. The evaluation focuses on the ability of models to simulate the average across time state in diverse environments and on the seasonal and short-term variability in the aerosol properties. There is no single model that systematically performs best across all environments represented by the observations. Models tend to underestimate the observed aerosol particle and CCN number concentrations, with average normalized mean bias (NMB) of all models and for all stations, where data are available, of −24 % and −35 % for particles with dry diameters >50 and >120 nm, as well as −36 % and −34 % for CCN at supersaturations of 0.2 % and 1.0 %, respectively. However, they seem to behave differently for particles activating at very low supersaturations ( %) than at higher ones. A total of 15 models have been used to produce ensemble annual median distributions of relevant parameters. The model diversity (defined as the ratio of standard deviation to mean) is up to about 3 for simulated N3 (number concentration of particles with dry diameters larger than 3 nm) and up to about 1 for simulated CCN in the extra-polar regions. A global mean reduction of a factor of about 2 is found in the model diversity for CCN at a supersaturation of 0.2 % (CCN0.2) compared to that for N3, maximizing over regions where new particle formation is important. An additional model has been used to investigate potential causes of model diversity in CCN and bias compared to the observations by performing a perturbed parameter ensemble (PPE) accounting for uncertainties in 26 aerosol-related model input parameters. This PPE suggests that biogenic secondary organic aerosol formation and the hygroscopic properties of the organic material are likely to be the major sources of CCN uncertainty in summer, with dry deposition and cloud processing being dominant in winter. Models capture the relative amplitude of the seasonal variability of the aerosol particle number concentration for all studied particle sizes with available observations (dry diameters larger than 50, 80 and 120 nm). The short-term persistence time (on the order of a few days) of CCN concentrations, which is a measure of aerosol dynamic behavior in the models, is underestimated on average by the models by 40 % during winter and 20 % in summer. In contrast to the large spread in simulated aerosol particle and CCN number concentrations, the CDNC derived from simulated CCN spectra is less diverse and in better agreement with CDNC estimates consistently derived from the observations (average NMB −13 % and −22 % for updraft velocities 0.3 and 0.6 m s−1, respectively). In addition, simulated CDNC is in slightly better agreement with observationally derived values at lower than at higher updraft velocities (index of agreement 0.64 vs. 0.65). The reduced spread of CDNC compared to that of CCN is attributed to the sublinear response of CDNC to aerosol particle number variations and the negative correlation between the sensitivities of CDNC to aerosol particle number concentration (∂Nd/∂Na) and to updraft velocity (∂Nd/∂w). Overall, we find that while CCN is controlled by both aerosol particle number and composition, CDNC is sensitive to CCN at low and moderate CCN concentrations and to the updraft velocity when CCN levels are high. Discrepancies are found in sensitivities ∂Nd/∂Na and ∂Nd/∂w; models may be predisposed to be too “aerosol sensitive” or “aerosol insensitive” in aerosol–cloud–climate interaction studies, even if they may capture average droplet numbers well. This is a subtle but profound finding that only the sensitivities can clearly reveal and may explain inter-model biases on the aerosol indirect effect.

A 1200×1200 km2 area of the tropical South Atlantic Ocean near Ascension Island is studied with the HadGEM climate model at convection-permitting and global resolutions for a 10-day case study period in August 2016. During the simulation period, a plume of biomass burning smoke from Africa moves into the area and mixes into the clouds. At Ascension Island, this smoke episode was the strongest of the 2016 fire season.The region of interest is simulated at 4 km resolution, with no parameterised convection scheme. The simulations are driven by, and compared to, the global model. For the first time, the UK Chemistry and Aerosol model (UKCA) is included in a regional model with prognostic aerosol number concentrations advecting in from the global model at the boundaries of the region.Fire emissions increase the total aerosol burden by a factor of 3.7 and cloud droplet number concentrations by a factor of 3, which is consistent with MODIS observations. In the regional model, the inversion height is reduced by up to 200 m when smoke is included. The smoke also affects precipitation, to an extent which depends on the model microphysics. The microphysical and dynamical changes lead to an increase in liquid water path of 60 g m−2 relative to a simulation without smoke aerosol, when averaged over the polluted period. This increase is uncertain, and smaller in the global model. It is mostly due to radiatively driven dynamical changes rather than precipitation suppression by aerosol.Over the 5-day polluted period, the smoke has substantial direct radiative effects of +11.4 W m−2 in the regional model, a semi-direct effect of −30.5 W m−2 and an indirect effect of −10.1 W m−2. Our results show that the radiative effects are sensitive to the structure of the model (global versus regional) and the parameterization of rain autoconversion. Furthermore, we simulate a liquid water path that is biased high compared to satellite observations by 22 % on average, and this leads to high estimates of the domain-averaged aerosol direct effect and the effect of the aerosol on cloud albedo. With these caveats, we simulate a large net cooling across the region, of −27.6 W m−2.

Observational constraint of simulated aerosol and cloud properties is an essential part of building trustworthy climate models for calculating aerosol radiative forcing. Models are usually tuned to achieve good agreement with observations, but tuning produces just one of many potential variants of a model, so the model uncertainty cannot be determined. Here we estimate the uncertainty in aerosol effective radiative forcing (ERF) in a tuned climate model by constraining 4 million variants of the HadGEM3-UKCA aerosol–climate model to match nine common observations (top-of-atmosphere shortwave flux, aerosol optical depth, PM2.5, cloud condensation nuclei at 0.2 % supersaturation (CCN0.2), and concentrations of sulfate, black carbon and organic carbon, as well as decadal trends in aerosol optical depth and surface shortwave radiation.) The model uncertainty is calculated by using a perturbed parameter ensemble that samples 27 uncertainties in both the aerosol model and the physical climate model, and we use synthetic observations generated from the model itself to determine the potential of each observational type to constrain this uncertainty. Focusing over Europe in July, we show that the aerosol ERF uncertainty can be reduced by about 30 % by constraining it to the nine observations, demonstrating that producing climate models with an observationally plausible base state can contribute to narrowing the uncertainty in aerosol ERF. However, the uncertainty in the aerosol ERF after observational constraint is large compared to the typical spread of a multi-model ensemble. Our results therefore raise questions about whether the underlying multi-model uncertainty would be larger if similar approaches as adopted here were applied more widely. The approach presented in this study could be used to identify the most effective observations for model constraint. It is hoped that aerosol ERF uncertainty can be further reduced by introducing process-related constraints; however, any such results will be robust only if the enormous number of potential model variants is explored.

Changes in aerosols cause a change in net top-of-the-atmosphere (ToA) short-wave and long-wave radiative fluxes; rapid adjustments in clouds, water vapour and temperature; and an effective radiative forcing (ERF) of the planetary energy budget. The diverse sources of model uncertainty and the computational cost of running climate models make it difficult to isolate the main causes of aerosol ERF uncertainty and to understand how observations can be used to constrain it. We explore the aerosol ERF uncertainty by using fast model emulators to generate a very large set of aerosol–climate model variants that span the model uncertainty due to 27 parameters related to atmospheric and aerosol processes. Sensitivity analyses shows that the uncertainty in the ToA flux is dominated (around 80 %) by uncertainties in the physical atmosphere model, particularly parameters that affect cloud reflectivity. However, uncertainty in the change in ToA flux caused by aerosol emissions over the industrial period (the aerosol ERF) is controlled by a combination of uncertainties in aerosol (around 60 %) and physical atmosphere (around 40 %) parameters. Four atmospheric and aerosol parameters account for around 80 % of the uncertainty in short-wave ToA flux (mostly parameters that directly scale cloud reflectivity, cloud water content or cloud droplet concentrations), and these parameters also account for around 60 % of the aerosol ERF uncertainty. The common causes of uncertainty mean that constraining the modelled planetary brightness to tightly match satellite observations changes the lower 95 % credible aerosol ERF value from −2.65 to −2.37 W m−2. This suggests the strongest forcings (below around −2.4 W m−2) are inconsistent with observations. These results show that, regardless of the fact that the ToA flux is 2 orders of magnitude larger than the aerosol ERF, the observed flux can constrain the uncertainty in ERF because their values are connected by constrainable process parameters. The key to reducing the aerosol ERF uncertainty further will be to identify observations that can additionally constrain individual parameter ranges and/or combined parameter effects, which can be achieved through sensitivity analysis of perturbed parameter ensembles.

Aviation emissions impact both air quality and climate. Using a coupled tropospheric chemistry-aerosol microphysics model we investigate the effects of varying aviation fuel sulfur content (FSC) on premature mortality from long-term exposure to aviation-sourced PM2.5 (particulate matter with a dry diameter of 2 aviation emissions with a typical FSC of 600 ppm result in ∼ 3600 [95 % CI: 1310–5890] annual premature mortalities globally due to increases in cases of cardiopulmonary disease and lung cancer, resulting from increased surface PM2.5 concentrations. We quantify the global annual mean combined radiative effect (REcomb) of non-CO2 aviation emissions as −13.3 mW m−2; from increases in aerosols (direct radiative effect and cloud albedo effect) and tropospheric ozone. Ultra-low sulfur jet fuel (ULSJ; FSC = 15 ppm) has been proposed as an option to reduce the adverse health impacts of aviation-induced PM2.5. We calculate that swapping the global aviation fleet to ULSJ fuel would reduce the global aviation-induced mortality rate by ∼ 620 [95 % CI: 230–1020] mortalities a−1 and increase REcomb by +7.0 mW m−2. We explore the impact of varying aviation FSC between 0 and 6000 ppm. Increasing FSC increases aviation-induced mortality, while enhancing climate cooling through increasing the aerosol cloud albedo effect (CAE). We explore the relationship between the injection altitude of aviation emissions and the resulting climate and air quality impacts. Compared to the standard aviation emissions distribution, releasing aviation emissions at the ground increases global aviation-induced mortality and produces a net warming effect, primarily through a reduced CAE. Aviation emissions injected at the surface are 5 times less effective at forming cloud condensation nuclei, reducing the aviation-induced CAE by a factor of 10. Applying high FSCs at aviation cruise altitudes combined with ULSJ fuel at lower altitudes results in reduced aviation-induced mortality and increased negative RE compared to the baseline aviation scenario.

The scientific understanding of the Earth's climate system, including the central question of how the climate system is likely to respond to human-induced perturbations, is comprehensively captured in GCMs and Earth System Models (ESM). Diagnosing the simulated climate response, and comparing responses across different models, is crucially dependent on transparent assumptions of how the GCM/ESM has been driven – especially because the implementation can involve subjective decisions and may differ between modelling groups performing the same experiment. This paper outlines the climate forcings and setup of the Met Office Hadley Centre ESM, HadGEM2-ES for the CMIP5 set of centennial experiments. We document the prescribed greenhouse gas concentrations, aerosol precursors, stratospheric and tropospheric ozone assumptions, as well as implementation of land-use change and natural forcings for the HadGEM2-ES historical and future experiments following the Representative Concentration Pathways. In addition, we provide details of how HadGEM2-ES ensemble members were initialised from the control run and how the palaeoclimate and AMIP experiments, as well as the "emission-driven" RCP experiments were performed.

The bias-stress effects of bottom-gate top-contact polymer-based organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with different channel lengths (50-500 μm) were evaluated by repeating cycles of prolonged on-state gate-bias application and transfer characteristics measurements in the linear regime. The thicknesses of poly(didodecylquaterthiophene- alt -didodecylbithiazole) active layers were 26 and 37 nm. All OFETs exhibited nonlinear (nonideal) transfer characteristics with a maximum transconductance within the gate-source voltage sweep range. Both a shift in threshold voltage ( V th lin ) and a reduction in field-effect charge carrier mobility (μ lin ) were apparently observed during the bias-stress application. When μ lin and V th lin were conventionally extracted from the transfer characteristics around the maximum transconductance, the V th lin shift amount and μ lin reduction depended on the channel length and were smaller in OFETs with short channels. After contact resistance ( R c ) correction, the channel length dependence disappeared. Thus, the operational stability in OFETs with short channels: ≤50 (150) μm for the 26 (37) nm-thick active layers, was found to be overestimated without R c correction. This erroneous evaluation would become more pronounced in short-channel, high-mobility OFETs, because the R c becomes larger relative to the channel resistance with increasing μ lin and decreasing channel length. These results suggest that one should pay attention to R c in the fundamental research into the origin of operational instability and in evaluating the effects of active layers, gate dielectrics, and active layer/gate dielectric interfaces on operational stability.

We present the development of free-standing ionic liquid crystal-polymer composite electrolyte films aimed at achieving high-frequency response electromechanical actuators. Our approach entails designing novel layered ionic liquid-crystalline (LC) assemblies by complexing a mesomorphic dimethylphosphate with either a lithium salt or a room-temperature ionic liquid through the formation of ion-dipole interactions or hydrogen bonds. These electrolytes, exhibiting room-temperature ionic conductivities on the order of 10 -4 S cm -1 and wide LC temperature ranges up to 77 °C, were successfully integrated into porous polymer networks. We systematically investigated the impact of ions and electrodes on the performance of ionic electroactive actuators. Specifically, the Li + -based liquid crystal-polymer composite actuator with PEDOT:PSS electrodes demonstrated the highest bending deformation, achieving a strain of 0.68% and exhibiting a broad frequency response up to 110 Hz, with a peak-to-peak displacement of 3 μm. In contrast, the ionic-liquid-based liquid crystal-polymer composite actuator with active carbon electrodes showcased a bending response at a maximum frequency of 50 Hz and a force generation of 0.48 mN, without exhibiting the back relaxation phenomenon. These findings offer valuable insights for advancing high-performance electromechanical systems with applications ranging from soft robotics to haptic interfaces.

We report columnar liquid-crystalline thiophene-oxadiazole molecules, which can be oriented by electric field and exhibit photodiode properties with an open-circuit voltage of 1 V. Their yellow luminescence can be excited by UV-visible or infrared light. Their room-temperature phosphorescence turns brighter upon heating.

Background: We often clinically observe individual differences in arm elevation angles, but the motion producing these differences remains unclear, partly because of the difficulty of accurately measuring scapular motion. The aim of this study was to determine whether the scapular or glenohumeral (GH) motion has more influence on differences in the arm elevation angles by capturing not only the humerus and scapula but also the trunk using two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) shape-matching registration techniques., Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects (13 male and 2 female; mean age: 27.7 years) were instructed to elevate their arms in the sagittal, scapular, and coronal planes. They were divided into high and low groups based on the average of arm elevation angle measured by a goniometer. The 3D scapular, thoracohumeral, and glenohumeral motions were evaluated using 2D/3D single-plane registration. To compare 3D motions between groups, we performed a two-way repeated measures analysis of variance., Results: Eight subjects were assigned to the high group, while seven subjects were assigned to the low groups based on an average elevation angle of 172°. The low group demonstrated a significant larger scapular protraction during elevation in all planes (P = 0.0002 for flexion; P = 0.0047 for scaption; P = 0.0314 for abduction), and smaller posterior tilting only during flexion (P = 0.0157). Self-assembly of ionic molecules into hierarchical ordered structures is a promising route to new types of solid electrolytes with enhanced ion transport. Herein, we report a liquid-crystalline polymer electrolyte membrane that contains three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected ionic pathways. To build this membrane, we used wedge-shaped amphiphilic molecules that have two ionic heads and a lipophilic tail. These molecules were combined with a low content of ionic liquid (5.6 wt %) to form a hexagonal columnar phase, where the self-assembled lipophilic cylinders were surrounded by the ionic shell. Photopolymerization of this phase produced flexible nanostructured films with 3D ionic pathways, which can serve as an electrolyte layer in soft robotic actuators. Ionic transport in the 3D pathways leads to shape memory capability as well as durable bending actuation with a voltage-controllable blocking force. Furthermore, we find a significant enhancement of actuation for the nanostructured electrolyte compared with the corresponding amorphous electrolyte.

We have developed room-temperature smectic liquid-crystalline (LC) ion conductors by the self-assembly of a zwitterionic mesogenic compound and a series of fluorinated lithium salts. The conductivity of lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide LC complex reached 4 × 10 -3 S cm -1 at ambient conditions. This LC complex sandwiched between two conductive polymer electrodes can be used in low-voltage mechanical actuators with a peak-to-peak bending deflection of ca. 20 mm upon ±1 V, 0.03 Hz excitation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2022 The Authors. Here, we report low-voltage-driven fast-response nanostructured columnar ionic liquid crystal/polymer composite actuators that form three-dimensional continuous ion channels. A three-component self-assembly of a zwitterionic rod-like molecule (49.5 wt %), an ionic liquid (27.5 wt %), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (23.0 wt %) provided a free-standing stretchable membrane electrolyte. The dissociated ions can move through a continuous 3D ionophilic matrix surrounding the hydrophobic columns formed by the hexagonally organized rod-mesogens. Three-layer actuators composed of the electrolyte film sandwiched between two conductive polymer film electrodes of doped polythiophene exhibited a bending motion with 0.32% strain and moved 2 mm within 220 ms under 1 V at 0.1 Hz in 70% relative humidity due to the formation of electric double layers at the soft solid electrolyte/electrode interfaces. The bending strain of the columnar nanostructured actuator is comparable to those of polymer iongel actuators and block polymer actuators containing 25-80 wt % of ionic liquids. It is noteworthy that a small number of ions organized into the 3D nanochannels can generate the large bending deformation, which can contribute to reduce the risk of leakage of ions and the production cost. In addition, we have demonstrated a low-voltage-driven deformable mirror actuator that is expected to be applied to optical devices.

Intracellular transport is the basis of microscale logistics within cells and is powered by biomolecular motors. Mimicking transport for in vitro applications has been widely studied; however, the inflexibility in track design and control has hindered practical applications. Here, we developed protein-based motors that move on DNA nanotubes by combining a biomolecular motor dynein and DNA binding proteins. The new motors and DNA-based nanoarchitectures enabled us to arrange the binding sites on the track, locally control the direction of movement, and achieve multiplexed cargo transport by different motors. The integration of these technologies realized microscale cargo sorters and integrators that automatically transport molecules as programmed in DNA sequences on a branched DNA nanotube. Our system should provide a versatile, controllable platform for future applications.

Multilayered films prepared from graphene oxide (GO) subjected to a single oxidation process (1GO) can actuate in response to moisture, whereas those prepared from GO subjected to two oxidation processes (2GO) lose this ability. To elucidate the origin of this difference, the structures and properties of various multilayered films and their contents were analyzed. According to atomic force microscopy images, the lateral size of the GO monolayer in 2GO (2.0 ± 0.4 μm) was smaller than that in 1GO (3.2 ± 0.4 μm), although this size difference did not affect actuation. Scanning electron microscopy images of the cross sections of both films showed fine multilayered structures and X-ray diffraction measurements showed the moisture sensitive reversible change in the interlayer distances for both films. Both films adsorbed 30 wt% moisture in 60 s with different water contents at the bottom moist sides and top air sides of the films. Nanoindentation experiments showed hardness values (1GO: 156 ± 67 MPa; 2GO: 189 ± 97 MPa) and elastic modulus values (1GO: 4.7 ± 1.7 GPa; 2GO: 5.8 ± 3.2 GPa) typical of GO, with no substantial difference between the films. On the contrary, the 1GO film bent when subjected to a weight equal to its own weight, whereas the 2GO film did not. We here report a new approach to develop self-healing shape memory supramolecular liquid-crystalline (LC) networks through self-assembly of molecular building blocks via combination of hydrogen bonding and coordination bonding. We have designed and synthesized supramolecular LC polymers and networks based on the complexation of a forklike mesogenic ligand with Ag + ions and carboxylic acids. Unidirectionally aligned fibers and free-standing films forming layered LC nanostructures have been obtained for the supramolecular LC networks. We have found that hybrid supramolecular LC networks formed through metal-ligand interactions and hydrogen bonding exhibit both self-healing properties and shape memory functions, while hydrogen-bonded LC networks only show self-healing properties. The combination of hydrogen bonds and metal-ligand interactions allows the tuning of intermolecular interactions and self-assembled structures, leading to the formation of the dynamic supramolecular LC materials. This paper presents a new family of ferroelectric smectic liquid-crystalline binary mixtures composed of achiral and chiral trifluoromethylphenylterthiophenes. The chiral symmetry breaking of the ferroelectric smectic phases can lead to chiral photovoltaic (CPV) effects, as a type of ferroelectric photovoltaic (FePV) effect, which is caused by the internal electric field originating from the spontaneous polarization. These ferroelectric properties were examined using the Sawyer-Tower method, and the CPV effect was confirmed by measuring the steady-state photocurrent response under zero bias. We found that the remnant polarization and photocurrent density in the polarized ferroelectric phases increased nonlinearly with the increase in the content of the chiral component in the mixture. Moreover, the hole mobility evaluated by time-of-flight measurements was kept constant by varying the composition. More than 40 mol % of the chiral component was required to form the polar structure, inducing the CPV effect. Binary mixture systems are advantageous for not only optimizing liquid crystal structures and temperature ranges but also facilitating the design of materials exhibiting CPV effects.

Dynein motor proteins usually work as a group in vesicle transport, mitosis, and ciliary/flagellar beating inside cells. Despite the obvious importance of the functions of dynein, the effect of inter-dynein interactions on collective motility remains poorly understood due to the difficulty in building large dynein ensembles with defined geometry. Here, we describe a method to build dynein ensembles to investigate the collective motility of dynein on microtubules. Using electron microscopy, we show that tens to hundreds of cytoplasmic dynein monomers were anchored along a 4- or 10-helix DNA nanotube with an average periodicity of 19 or 44 nm (a programmed periodicity of 14 or 28 nm, respectively). They drove the sliding movement of DNA nanotubes along microtubules at a velocity of 170-620 nm/s. Reducing the stiffness of DNA nanotubes made the nanotube movement discontinuous and considerably slower. Decreasing the spacing between motors simply slowed down the nanotube movement. This slowdown was independent of the number of motors involved but heavily dependent on motor-motor distance. This suggests that steric hindrance or mechanical coupling between dynein molecules was responsible for the slowdown. Furthermore, we observed cyclical buckling of DNA nanotubes on microtubules, reminiscent of ciliary/flagellar beating. Controlling assembled structures of π-conjugated liquid-crystalline molecules is of great interest in the development of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials due to their molecular motility in the ordered states. Herein, we describe a mechanoresponsive hydrogen-bonded benzodithiophene liquid-crystalline molecule that exhibits a tricolor photoluminescence switching at ambient temperature. The compound shows a shear-induced phase transition from a rectangular columnar to a metastable optically anisotropic mesophase, which is accompanied by the luminescent color change from yellow to sky-blue. The metastable mesophase exhibits a time-responsive transformation to another metastable mesophase showing a blue-green emission through isothermal aging at room temperature. The luminescent color of aged sample reverts back to the initial yellow color by thermal annealing at 150 °C. These dynamic structural changes accompanied by the emission color changes are governed by distinct π-stacking modes and hydrogen-bonded patterns. The shear-induced luminescent color change from yellow to blue is found to occur above the shear strain of 390 % at which the shear stress is 2.4×10 5  Pa as determined from dynamic viscoelastic measurements., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Here, we describe a strategy to obtain nanoporous liquid-crystalline (LC) membranes by incorporating a photocleavable ortho -nitrobenzyl group in polymerizable columnar liquid crystals. Two derivatives were synthesized with propylene and nonylene spacers, respectively, between the ionic and the photocleavable moieties to introduce various size nanopores after photocleavage. The membranes were prepared by photopolymerization in the LC states, followed by photocleavage and washing with methanol. The resulting membranes show a virus rejection of 99.99%. Although the rejection value remained almost the same for the two membranes, water flux increased with increasing the length of the alkyl spacers. These membranes were found to be almost free from pinhole defects. The present study offers a new methodology for the development of nanoporous membranes with organized nanostructures for separation technologies.

Here we report columnar liquid-crystalline (LC) nanostructured membranes that highly remove viruses and show sufficient water permeation. These membranes were prepared by employing two-component liquid crystals that exhibit tetragonal columnar phases. The membranes exhibited virus rejection values of >99.99% (log 10 reduction value (LRV) > 4) and water flux ranging from 19 to 61 L m -2 h -1 (operation pressure: 0.3 MPa). These membranes were fabricated by photopolymerization of a fan-shaped diol molecule and imidazolium ionic liquid mixture, followed by subsequent removal of the ionic liquid. The rejection values and water flux depend on the fraction of ionic liquid. These results show new design strategies of materials for the water treatment nanostructured membranes that remove pathogens and contaminants.
