In this study, we examine the descriptive qualities of revenge fantasies and test evolutionary and individual-difference accounts for the experience of them. Participants recalled and described a revenge fantasy, and rated its recency, duration, intensity, and the frequency with which they fantasized about revenge overall. They also completed measures of narcissistic entitlement and vengefulness. Consistent with an evolutionary approach to understanding revenge, the results show that men were twice as likely to report fantasies of direct/overt acts of revenge than were women. Vengefulness and narcissistic entitlement did not relate to whether the fantasized revenge act was direct/overt or indirect/covert, but related to the frequency and intensity of participants’ revenge fantasies and the affective experiences participants reported while thinking of them. The findings add specificity to the three-phase model of revenge ( Yoshimura & Boon, 2018 ), and reveal areas of potential growth in research on revenge, in general, and revenge fantasies specifically.

Several diseases or conditions cause dermatological disorders that hinder the process of skin repair. The search for novel technologies has inspired the combination of stem cell (SC) and light-based therapies to ameliorate skin wound repair. Herein, we systematically revised the impact of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) combined with SCs in animal models of skin wounds and quantitatively evaluated this effect through a meta-analysis. For inclusion, SCs should be irradiated in vitro or in vivo, before or after being implanted in animals, respectively. The search resulted in nine eligible articles, which were assessed for risk of bias. For the meta-analysis, studies were included only when PBM was applied in vivo, five regarding wound closure, and three to wound strength. Overall, a positive influence of SC + PBM on wound closure (mean difference: 9.69; 95% CI: 5.78-13.61, P 0.00001) and strength (standardized mean difference: 1.7, 95% CI: 0.68-2.72, P = 0.001) was detected, although studies have shown moderate to high heterogeneity and a lack of information regarding some bias domains. Altogether, PBM seems to be an enabling technology able to be applied postimplantation of SCs for cutaneous regeneration. Our findings may guide future laboratory and clinical studies in hopes of offering wound care patients a better quality of life.

Maize ( Zea mays ) is a major staple crop in Africa, where its yield and the livelihood of millions are compromised by the parasitic witchweed Striga . Germination of Striga is induced by strigolactones exuded from maize roots into the rhizosphere. In a maize germplasm collection, we identified two strigolactones, zealactol and zealactonoic acid, which stimulate less Striga germination than the major maize strigolactone, zealactone. We then showed that a single cytochrome P450, ZmCYP706C37, catalyzes a series of oxidative steps in the maize-strigolactone biosynthetic pathway. Reduction in activity of this enzyme and two others involved in the pathway, ZmMAX1b and ZmCLAMT1, can change strigolactone composition and reduce Striga germination and infection. These results offer prospects for breeding Striga -resistant maize.

Climate change is affecting how energy and matter flow through ecosystems, thereby altering global carbon and nutrient cycles. Microorganisms play a fundamental role in carbon and nutrient cycling and are thus an integral link between ecosystems and climate. Here, we highlight a major black box hindering our ability to anticipate ecosystem climate responses: viral infections within complex microbial food webs. We show how understanding and predicting ecosystem responses to warming could be challenging—if not impossible—without accounting for the direct and indirect effects of viral infections on different microbes (bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists) that together perform diverse ecosystem functions. Importantly, understanding how rising temperatures associated with climate change influence viruses and virus-host dynamics is crucial to this task, yet is severely understudied. In this perspective, we (i) synthesize existing knowledge about virus-microbe-temperature interactions and (ii) identify important gaps to guide future investigations regarding how climate change might alter microbial food web effects on ecosystem functioning. To provide real-world context, we consider how these processes may operate in peatlands—globally significant carbon sinks that are threatened by climate change. We stress that understanding how warming affects biogeochemical cycles in any ecosystem hinges on disentangling complex interactions and temperature responses within microbial food webs.

Objectives The aim of this AFIRE (Atrial Fibrillation and Ischemic Events With Rivaroxaban in Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease) trial subgroup analysis was to examine rivaroxaban monotherapy benefits and their relation to the time between stenting and enrollment among patients after coronary stenting. Background Of 2,215 patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease in the AFIRE trial, rivaroxaban monotherapy was noninferior to rivaroxaban plus antiplatelet therapy (combination therapy) in terms of efficacy and superior for safety endpoints. However, thrombotic risk after antiplatelet therapy cessation remained a concern among 1,444 patients who had undergone coronary stenting >1 year before enrollment. Methods The benefits of rivaroxaban monotherapy in coronary stenting subgroups were assessed for efficacy (a composite of stroke, systemic embolism, myocardial infarction, unstable angina requiring revascularization, or death of any cause), safety (major bleeding defined according to International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis criteria), ischemic endpoints, net adverse clinical event, and time between stenting and enrollment. Results Efficacy and safety endpoints for monotherapy were superior to combination therapy, with HRs of 0.70 for efficacy (95% CI: 0.50-0.98; P = 0.036) and 0.55 for safety (95% CI: 0.33-0.92; P = 0.019). For ischemic endpoints, the HR was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.58-1.15; P = 0.240). The HR became smaller with longer time between stenting and enrollment (efficacy, P for interaction = 0.158; safety, P = 0.097). Conclusions In patients with atrial fibrillation after coronary stenting, the benefits of rivaroxaban monotherapy for efficacy and safety endpoints were consistent with those in the whole AFIRE trial population. The benefits became apparent with longer time between stenting and enrollment. Regulation of inflammation is a critical process for maintaining physiological homeostasis. The λ-carrageenan (λ-CGN) is a mucopolysaccharide extracted from the cell wall of red algae (Chondrus crispus) capable of inducing acute intestinal inflammation, which is translated into the production of acute phase reactants secreted into the blood circulation. However, the associated mechanisms in vertebrates are not well understood. Here, we investigated the crucial factors behind the inflammatory milieu of λ-CGN-mediated inflammation administered at 0, 1.75, and 3.5% (v/w) by i.p. injection into the peritoneal cavity of adult zebrafish (ZF) (Danio rerio). We found that polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils) and lymphocytes infiltrating the ZF peritoneal cavity had short-term persistence. Nevertheless, they generate a strong pattern of inflammation that affects systemically and is enough to produce edema in the cavity. Consistent with these findings, cell infiltration, which causes notable tissue changes, resulted in the overexpression of several acute inflammatory markers at the protein level. Using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography followed by a hybrid linear ion-trap mass spectrometry shotgun proteomic approach, we identified 2938 plasma proteins among the animals injected with PBS and 3.5% λ-CGN. First, the bioinformatic analysis revealed the composition of the plasma proteome. Interestingly, 72 commonly expressed proteins were recorded among the treated and control groups, but, surprisingly, 2830 novel proteins were differentially expressed exclusively in the λ-CGN-induced group. Furthermore, from the commonly expressed proteins, compared to the control group 62 proteins got a significant (p < 0.05) upregulation in the λ-CGN-treated group, while the remaining ten proteins were downregulated. Next, we obtained the major protein-protein interaction networks between hub protein clusters in the blood plasma of the λ-CGN induced group. Moreover, to understand the molecular underpinnings of these effects based on the unveiled protein sets, we performed a bioinformatic structural similarity analysis and generated overlapping 3D reconstructions between ZF and humans during acute inflammation. Biological pathway analysis pointed to the activation and abundance of diverse classical immune and acute phase reactants, several catalytic enzymes, and varied proteins supporting the immune response. Together, this information can be used for testing and finding novel pharmacological targets to treat human intestinal inflammatory diseases.

Novel biomarkers of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in addition to antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptides, are required. Metabolome analysis is a promising approach to identify metabolite biomarkers for clinical diagnosis. We adopted a comprehensive non-targeted metabolomics approach combining capillary electrophoresis time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) and liquid chromatography TOFMS. We constructed metabolomics profiling of 286 plasma samples of a Japanese population [92 RA patients, 13 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and 181 healthy controls). RA case–control association tests showed that seven metabolites exhibited significantly increased levels in RA samples compared with controls (P < 1.0 × 10−4; UTP, ethanolamine phosphate, ATP, GDP, ADP, 6-aminohexanoic acid and taurine), whereas one exhibited a decreased level (xanthine). The plasma levels of these eight metabolites were not significantly different between seropositive and seronegative RA patients (P > 0.05; n = 68 and 24, respectively). The four nucleotide levels (UTP, ATP, GDP and ADP) were significantly higher in the non-treatment patients in comparison between patients with and without treatment (P < 0.014; n = 57 and 35, respectively). Furthermore, we found that none of the four nucleotide levels showed significant differences in SLE case–control association tests (P > 0.2; 13 patients with SLE and the 181 shared controls) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) case–control association tests (P > 0.11; 42 patients with PsA and 38 healthy controls), indicating disease specificity in RA. In conclusion, our large-scale metabolome analysis demonstrated the increased plasma nucleotide levels in RA patients, which could be used as potential clinical biomarkers of RA, especially for seronegative RA., Plasma nucleotide levels are new biomarkers for RA

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a neglected parasitic disease that leads to destructive lesions. The emergence of drug resistance has been a global concern over the past years. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) mediated by a red LED and methylene blue (MB) involves the overproduction of oxidative stress, which oxidizes several cellular biomolecules and prevents the selection of resistant strains. Herein, we investigated the potential of PDT mediated by MB against wild-type and miltefosine-resistant strains of Leishmania amazonensis. As a result, both strains were susceptible to PDT, thus encouraging us to seek the best conditions to overcome the drug resistance problem in cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) undergoes a metal–insulator phase transition at ∼70 °C. As this is a first-order phase transition, VO2 exhibits thermal hysteresis. The reflectivity and electrical resistivity of VO2 drastically change at insulator-to-metal ( TIMT) and metal-to-insulator ( TMIT) transition temperatures during heating and cooling, respectively. For smart glass and thermal memory applications employing VO2, the origin and control factor of thermal hysteresis must be investigated. Additional elemental doping and nano-structuring of VO2 affect the thermal hysteresis width. However, the factors determining TIMT and TMIT remain unclear. TIMT and TMIT can be modified by irradiating Ar+ on the surface of VO2 nanostructures with varying Ar+ irradiation doses ( nAr+) at 1 keV. The temperature-dependent reflectivity against IR light is evaluated. For VO2, TIMT decreases with nAr+ = 3.9 × 1014 cm−2; TMIT increases with nAr+ > 3.9 × 1015 cm−2. Ar+ irradiation decreases the thermal hysteresis width. Because the expected penetration depth of Ar+ at 1 keV into the VO2 surface is 2 chemical state at the outermost surface is investigated using x-ray absorption spectroscopy with soft x-ray irradiation. The V L-edge peak energy decreases with increasing nAr+ . Ar+ irradiation reduces V only at the outermost surface state. TIMT is more sensitive than TMIT to the reduction of V. The reduction of only a small fraction at the surface affects the phase transition of the entire VO2. These results are beneficial for understanding the cause of thermal hysteresis width and improving the performance of devices using VO2.

Climate warming will likely disrupt the flow of matter and energy within ecosystems, threatening the global carbon balance. Microorganisms are fundamental components of carbon cycling and are thus integral to ecosystem climate responses. However, ecosystem responses to warming are uncertain due to the functional and trophic complexity of microbial food webs. Here, we expose two major black boxes hindering our ability to anticipate ecosystem climate responses: viral infection and predation by microbial predators. We review current knowledge and uncover critical gaps in knowledge about how warming will impact these important top-down controls on the global carbon cycle. Understanding and predicting ecosystem responses to climate change will require disentangling complex direct and indirect responses within microbial food webs.

Background and Aims The effect of peripheral nerve block (PNB) under general anesthesia (GA) on the clinical outcome comparing GA alone remains unknown. We hypothesized that PNB is associated with reduced postoperative delirium and improved patients morbidity after surgical procedures. Methods We used a nationwide inpatient database in Japan to compare patient outcomes by GA with PNB versus GA alone from April 2016 to October 2019. Our primary outcome was postoperative delirium. The incidence of morbidity were secondary outcomes. We conducted propensity score matched analyses of patients who underwent all surgical procedures using 41 covariates. Chi-square analyses were performed to calculate odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals (CI). For sensitivity analyses, we performed instrumental variables and restricted the definition of postoperative delirium and subgroup. Results Of 591,578 patients, 82,461 received GA-PNB, and 509,117 received GA group. After one to four propensity score matching, 81,873 patients were included in the GA-PNB group and 204,932 in the GA group. The adjusted odds ratios for postoperative delirium, composite morbidity were 0.953 (95%CI 0.924 to 0.982), 0.766 (95%CI 0.727 to 0.806), respectively, for the GA-PNB group with reference to the GA group. For sensitivity analyses, findings were also consistent with instrumental variable and subgroup analyses. Conclusions This retrospective, nationwide cohort study demonstrated that PNB underwent GA was associated with reduced postoperative delirium and composite morbidity.

The death of close relationship partners forces individuals to engage in a number of challenging grief-related tasks, including reconstructing a narrative about the relationship, re-situating their relationship with the deceased individual, and developing a new sense of self post-loss. The dominant narrative of grief, as described by Neimeyer, Klass, and Dennis (2014), assumes that “normal” grief performances are linear and finite, failing to acknowledge the subjectivity inherent in bereavement experiences. In this review, we illuminate the discord between the dominant narrative of grief and the subjective experience of it. We draw upon Doka’s (2002) theory of disenfranchised grief to propose that grief is not just a possible temporary state of disenfranchisement, but rather a perpetual state of disenfranchisement. This disenfranchisement is mainly a function of the social and personal binds that individuals find themselves in while navigating the lines between the dominant narrative of grief and their personal experience and performance of bereavement. We propose a communicative approach to grief as a solution to the problem articulated in this review, and suggest several new avenues for research on grief.

ObjectiveThe causality and pathogenic mechanism of microbiome composition remain elusive in many diseases, including autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study aimed to elucidate gut microbiome’s role in RA pathology by a comprehensive metagenome-wide association study (MWAS).MethodsWe conducted MWAS of the RA gut microbiome in the Japanese population (ncase=82, ncontrol=42) by using whole-genome shotgun sequencing of high depth (average 13 Gb per sample). Our MWAS consisted of three major bioinformatic analytic pipelines (phylogenetic analysis, functional gene analysis and pathway analysis).ResultsPhylogenetic case–control association tests showed high abundance of multiple species belonging to the genus Prevotella (e.g., Prevotella denticola) in the RA case metagenome. The non-linear machine learning method efficiently deconvoluted the case–control phylogenetic discrepancy. Gene functional assessments showed that the abundance of one redox reaction-related gene (R6FCZ7) was significantly decreased in the RA metagenome compared with controls. A variety of biological pathways including those related to metabolism (e.g., fatty acid biosynthesis and glycosaminoglycan degradation) were enriched in the case–control comparison. A population-specific link between the metagenome and host genome was identified by comparing biological pathway enrichment between the RA metagenome and the RA genome-wide association study results. No apparent discrepancy in alpha or beta diversities of metagenome was found between RA cases and controls.ConclusionOur shotgun sequencing-based MWAS highlights a novel link among the gut microbiome, host genome and pathology of RA, which contributes to our understanding of the microbiome’s role in RA aetiology.

A 26-year-old woman with Takayasu's arteritis (TAK) experienced back and neck pain during tocilizumab (TCZ) treatment. The levels of C-reactive protein were normal, and ultrasonography revealed no significant changes. Diffusion-weighted whole-body imaging with background body signal suppression (DWIBS) showed signal enhancement in the walls of several arteries. Contrast computed tomography showed arterial inflammation in the same lesion. After increasing the dose of prednisolone and TCZ, all signal enhancements decreased and continued to decrease, as observed on days 76 and 132. Thus, DWIBS may be a novel imaging modality for assessing the disease activity of TAK, particularly during follow-up.

When monitoring phenology at ground level, it would be more important to continue observations in long terms and to detect the timing of various phenological events such as leafing, flowering and autumn senescence. In this study, to develop the methodology for plant phenology monitoring by using digital camera, we examined how multiple image indices, which are derived from multi-temporal visible images, respond to the changes of colors of leaves and flowers for several target species of plants, and tried to detect various phenology events by tracing time series changes of the coordinate in the feature spaces of two indices. As a result, we found out that it was possible to understand the characteristics of the phenological events for different species from each image index. Also, it was identified that the utility of combination with two indices would be effective to detect the timing of phenology events in the feature space of two indices. In the actual phenology monitoring, it would be effective to use a single index for understanding the seasonal characteristics and to use the combination of two indices for detection of the timing of phenology events by tracing the time series changes in the feature space.

In this work we performed experimental analyses of the dose-response curves of natural alexandrite, using thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The natural alexandrite crystals from Bahia, Brazil, were pulverized and the optical absorption measurements were carried out in the range of 200 to 800 nm, comparing a non-irradiated sample with a 10 Gy beta irradiated one. OSL and TL measurements were performed using the Risø equipment (model DA-20) with irradiation doses from 1 to 5 Gy. Glow curve analysis was done using GlowFit software for TL, and R Studio software for OSL measurements. The irradiated sample (10 Gy) shows an absorption spectrum similar to the non-irradiated one, containing the same bands. The samples of natural alexandrite showed a linear dose-response for both OSL and TL measurements. From the TL and OSL analyses, it was possible to infer a correlation between the slow OSL component with the most intense TL peaks of alexandrite.

BackgroundThe management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been transformed by the use of molecular targeted therapies. Early treatment and treat-to-target approach leads to good clinical response and remission (responders), but not in all patients.Environmental factors including diet contribute to the development, activity and severity of RA. Evidence from clinical trials suggested that dietary interventions, such as Mediterranean diet or supplementation with fish oil rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), have positive effects on RA. Japanese and Mediterranean diets are associated with longevity and characterized by high fish intake. Clinical studies have identified predictors of treatment response in individual RA patients, however, the influence of fish consumption on treatment response in RA patients treated with targeted therapies has not been elucidated.ObjectivesTo assess whether fish consumption is associated with a good response to targeted therapies in RA patients with Japanese and Mediterranean dietary patterns.MethodsThe study is a collaborative international cross-sectional retrospective study enrolling patients with RA on treatment with biologics or JAK inhibitors attending to Hokkaido University Hospital, Japan or Hospital Virgen de las Nieves, Spain.Enrolled patients were asked to complete a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire (BDHQ) and a detailed fish frequency questionnaire (DFFQ) referring to consumption frequency in the previous month. At study entry, alcohol consumption, tobacco habits, educational level and employment status were recorded and RA disease activity evaluated by qualified rheumatologists. Demographic, clinical/laboratory data were retrospectively extracted from the medical records.By December 2021, 279 patients (Japan 217, Spain 62) returned the questionnaires. A preliminary analysis was carried out with the first 58 Japanese patients in which all clinical and laboratory data could be collected. A descriptive analysis was performed and the relative risks approximated by odds ratios.ResultsFifty-eight Japanese RA patients, 45 females, median age at entry 66 yrs [IQR 54-73], median disease duration 11yrs [IQR 7-20] were included in this analysis. Fifty-three (93%) of patients were on biologic therapies and four (7%) on JAK inhibitors with a median treatment duration of 4.5 yrs [IQR 1-7]. Concomitant treatment with conventional DMARDS and glucocorticoids were reported in 69% and 48% of patients, respectively. Forty-two (72%) patients were responders to treatment defined as DASESR ≦3.2. Another systemic autoimmune disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia or gout history were present in 29%, 29%, 9%, 33% and 10% of patients, respectively.All patients had consumption of fish in the last month and an intake of n3-PUFA rich fish (fatty fish) was indicated by 82% (The patients’ fatty and non-fatty fish intake scores were calculated with a mathematical formula based on the intake of each of the fish included in the DFFQ and number of responses. In the group of high fatty fish score patients (≧ 1 time/week) 94% were responders to treatment vs. 6% non-responders, [OR 8.75, CI [1.0-73.54, p= 0.022] while only 63% of patients in the high non-fatty fish score group respond to the treatment.ConclusionFatty fish intake associated with a good response to treatment in patients receiving targeted therapies, suggesting that fish consumption may have some beneficial effects on RA treatment.ReferencesThere is no reference.AcknowledgementsAcknowledgements to Ms. Y. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) modulate the post-transcriptional regulation of target genes and are related to biology of complex human traits, but genetic landscape of miRNAs remains largely unknown. Given the strikingly tissue-specific miRNA expression profiles, we here expand a previous method to quantitatively evaluate enrichment of genome-wide association study (GWAS) signals on miRNA–target gene networks (MIGWAS) to further estimate tissue-specific enrichment. Our approach integrates tissue-specific expression profiles of miRNAs (∼1800 miRNAs in 179 cells) with GWAS to test whether polygenic signals enrich in miRNA–target gene networks and whether they fall within specific tissues. We applied MIGWAS to 49 GWASs (nTotal = 3 520 246), and successfully identified biologically relevant tissues. Further, MIGWAS could point miRNAs as candidate biomarkers of the trait. As an illustrative example, we performed differentially expressed miRNA analysis between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and healthy controls (n = 63). We identified novel biomarker miRNAs (e.g. hsa-miR-762) by integrating differentially expressed miRNAs with MIGWAS results for RA, as well as novel associated loci with significant genetic risk (rs56656810 at MIR762 at 16q11; n = 91 482, P = 3.6 × 10−8). Our result highlighted that miRNA–target gene network contributes to human disease genetics in a cell type-specific manner, which could yield an efficient screening of miRNAs as promising biomarkers.
