Search

This is the fourth data paper publishing lightcurve survey work of 52 Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) using 10 telescopes available to the EURONEAR network between 2017 and 2020. Forty six targets were not observed before our runs (88% of the sample) but some of these were targeted during the same oppositions mainly by Brian Warner. We propose new periods for 20 targets (38% of the sample), confirming published data for 20 targets, while our results for 8 targets do not match published data. We secured periods for 15 targets (29% of the sample), candidate periods for 23 objects (44%), tentative periods for 11 asteroids (21%), and have derived basic information about 3 targets (6% of the sample). We calculated the lower limit of the ellipsoid shape ratios a/b for 46 NEAs (including 13 PHAs). Introduction: Induction of a pathological type of hypertrophy in human engineered heart tissues (EHTs) has not yet been fully achieved. We hypothesized that this limitation is caused by the unicellularity of EHTs, which contain only cardiomyocytes (CMs) and lack the interactions with non-myocytes. Thus, we aimed to generate EHTs implementing five native cardiac cell types, i.e., CMs, endothelial cells (ECs), fibroblasts (Fbs), smooth muscle cells (SMCs), and macrophages (Mϕ). Methods and Results: CMs were differentiated from hiPSCs by mesodermal induction followed by inhibition of Wnt-signaling. Mesoderm progenitors were also used to differentiate ECs via VEGF stimulation. Differentiation into SMCs and Fbs required Wnt pathway activation followed by stimulation with TGFβ+bFGF or bFGF only, respectively. Finally, Mϕ differentiation required hematopoietic/myeloid specification by IL-3 and M-CSF treatment. Successful differentiation was analyzed by electron microscopy (EM) and expression profiling of hallmark genes and proteins. For instance, Mϕs exhibited high expression of myeloid markers (98.0% CD68 + , 90.9% CD14 + ) whereas Fbs showed upregulation in genes such as POSTN, DDR2, COL1A1 (all >100 fold higher than iPSCs). Functionality of all cell types was demonstrated by multiple assays. For example, the native Mϕ function was demonstrated via degradation and phagocytosis assays while ECs exhibited fast and extensive tube formation in matrigel assays. Additionally, Fbs produced 4.6x more collagen after TGFβ stimulation than unstimulated controls. In effect, multi-cell-type EHTs were generated from 60% CMs, 20% ECs, 10% Mϕ, 5% SMCs and 5% Fbs. These EHTs were characterized by confocal microscopy, serial block-face scanning EM, gene expression profiling, and automated contractility measurements. Pilot experiments revealed that the addition of different cell types accelerated the development of EHTs which was associated with earlier onset of beating and shorter diameter of the EHTs. Conclusion: Successful application of cell differentiation protocols resulted in the integration of five cell types in a multi-cell-type EHT system. The full functional profile and reaction to a stress stimulus will be investigated in future experiments.

Eccentric ellipsoidal variables (aka heartbeat stars) is a class of eccentric binaries in which proximity effects, tidal distortion due to time-dependent tidal potential in particular, lead to measurable photometric variability close to the periastron passage. The varying tidal potential may also give rise to tidally-excited oscillations (TEOs). TEOs may play an important role in the dynamical evolution of massive eccentric systems. Our study is aimed at the detection of TEOs and characterisation of the long-term behaviour of their amplitudes and frequencies in the extreme-amplitude heartbeat star MACHO 80.7443.1718, consisting of a blue supergiant and a late O-type massive dwarf. We use two seasons of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations of the target to obtain new 30-min cadence photometry by means of the difference image analysis of TESS full-frame images. In order to extend the analysis to longer time scales, we supplement the TESS data with 30-years long ground-based photometry of the target. We confirm the detection of the known $n=23$, 25, and 41 TEOs and announce the detection of two new TEOs, with $n=24$ and 230, in the photometry of MACHO 80.7443.1718. Amplitudes of all TEOs were found to vary on a time scale of years or months. For $n=25$ TEO amplitude and frequency changes are related, which may indicate that the main cause of the amplitude drop of this TEO in TESS observations is the change of its frequency and increase of detuning parameter. The light curve of the $n=230$ TEO is strongly non-sinusoidal. Its high frequency may indicate that the oscillation is a strange mode. We also find that the orbital period of the system decreases at the rate of about 11 s(yr)$^{-1}$, which can be explained by a significant mass loss or mass transfer in the system with a possible contribution from tidal dissipation., 19 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Workers' compensation claims data are an underutilized source of research data. Data mining is a step in the process of knowledge discovery. This report is an inquiry into the question of whether data mining can be used to expand the research potential of workplace injury claims. A descriptive data-mining method is used to avoid the hazards of predictive data mining. A key decision in descriptive data mining is the selection of the descriptive variables to be included. A major purpose of claims processing is documentation of benefit decisions. This documentation is used in selecting the case records embedded in a claim history. This novel process is called beneficiation not only because of the obvious reference to benefit but also because it is a mining term that describes a process that further refines metallic ores. Claim beneficiation identified four data forms that contain descriptive information about workplace injury claim data. They are the first report of injury, the activity prescription form, a functional capacity evaluation, and a physical capability estimate. When the data variables from these forms are combined they become a workplace injury case registry history which is a new frontier for research in injury epidemiology.

We report the analysis of planetary microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-1185, which was observed by a large number of ground-based telescopes and by the $Spitzer$ Space Telescope. The ground-based light curve indicates a low planet-host star mass ratio of $q = (6.9 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-5}$, which is near the peak of the wide-orbit exoplanet mass-ratio distribution. We estimate the host star and planet masses with a Bayesian analysis using the measured angular Einstein radius under the assumption that stars of all masses have an equal probability to host this planet. The flux variation observed by $Spitzer$ was marginal, but still places a constraint on the microlens parallax. Imposing a conservative constraint that this flux variation should be $\Delta f_{\rm Spz} < 4$ instrumental flux units indicates a host mass of $M_{\rm host} = 0.37^{+0.35}_{-0.21}\ M_\odot$ and a planet mass of $m_{\rm p} = 8.4^{+7.9}_{-4.7}\ M_\oplus$. A Bayesian analysis including the full parallax constraint from $Spitzer$ suggests smaller host star and planet masses of $M_{\rm host} = 0.091^{+0.064}_{-0.018}\ M_\odot$ and $m_{\rm p} = 2.1^{+1.5}_{-0.4}\ M_\oplus$, respectively. We present the analysis of the microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-1428, which has a short-duration ($\sim 1$ day) caustic-crossing anomaly. The event was caused by a planetary lens system with planet/host mass ratio $q=1.7\times10^{-3}$. Thanks to the detection of the caustic-crossing anomaly, the finite source effect was well measured, but the microlens parallax was not constrained due to the relatively short timescale ($t_{\rm E}=24$ days). From a Bayesian analysis, we find that the host star is a dwarf star $M_{\rm host}=0.43^{+0.33}_{-0.22} \ M_{\odot}$ at a distance $D_{\rm L}=6.22^{+1.03}_{-1.51}\ {\rm kpc}$ and the planet is a Jovian-mass planet $M_{\rm p}=0.77^{+0.77}_{-0.53} \ M_{\rm J}$ with a projected separation $a_{\perp}=3.30^{+0.59}_{-0.83}\ {\rm au}$. The planet orbits beyond the snow line of the host star. Considering the relative lens-source proper motion of $\mu_{\rm rel} = 5.58 \pm 0.38\ \rm mas\ yr^{-1}$, the lens can be resolved by adaptive optics with a 30m telescope in the future., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We conducted a project of reinvestigating the 2017--2019 microlensing data collected by the high-cadence surveys with the aim of finding planets that were missed due to the deviations of planetary signals from the typical form of short-term anomalies. The project led us to find three planets including KMT-2017-BLG-2509Lb, OGLE-2017-BLG-1099Lb, and OGLE-2019-BLG-0299Lb. The lensing light curves of the events have a common characteristic that the planetary signals were produced by the crossings of faint source stars over the resonant caustics formed by giant planets located near the Einstein rings of host stars. For all planetary events, the lensing solutions are uniquely determined without any degeneracy. It is estimated that the host masses are in the range of $0.45\lesssim M/M_\odot \lesssim 0.59$, which corresponds to early M to late K dwarfs, and thus the host stars are less massive than the sun. On the other hand, the planets, with masses in the range of $2.1\lesssim M/M_{\rm J}\lesssim 6.2$, are heavier than the heaviest planet of the solar system, that is, Jupiter. The planets in all systems lie beyond the snow lines of the hosts, and thus the discovered planetary systems, together with many other microlensing planetary systems, support that massive gas-giant planets are commonplace around low-mass stars. We present the photometric analysis of Gaia19bld, a high-magnification ($A\approx60$) microlensing event located in the southern Galactic plane, which exhibited finite source and microlensing parallax effects. Due to a prompt detection by the Gaia satellite and the very high brightness of $I = 9.05~$mag at the peak, it was possible to collect a complete and unique set of multi-channel follow-up observations, which allowed us to determine all parameters vital for the characterisation of the lens and the source in the microlensing event. Gaia19bld was discovered by the Gaia satellite and was subsequently intensively followed up with a network of ground-based observatories and the Spitzer Space Telescope. We collected multiple high-resolution spectra with Very Large Telescope (VLT)/X-Shooter to characterise the source star. The event was also observed with VLT Interferometer (VLTI)/PIONIER during the peak. Here we focus on the photometric observations and model the light curve composed of data from Gaia, Spitzer, and multiple optical, ground-based observatories. We find the best-fitting solution with parallax and finite source effects. We derived the limit on the luminosity of the lens based on the blended light model and spectroscopic distance. We compute the mass of the lens to be $1.13 \pm 0.03~M_{\odot}$ and derive its distance to be $5.52^{+0.35}_{-0.64}~\mathrm{kpc}$. The lens is likely a main sequence star, however its true nature has yet to be verified by future high-resolution observations. Our results are consistent with interferometric measurements of the angular Einstein radius, emphasising that interferometry can be a new channel for determining the masses of objects that would otherwise remain undetectable, including stellar-mass black holes., Comment: accepted to Astronomy&Astrophysics

Background One third of heart failure patients exhibit dyssynchronized electromechanical activity of the heart (evidenced by a broad QRS-complex). Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in the form of biventricular pacing improves cardiac output and clinical outcome of responding patients. Technically demanding and laborious large animal models have been developed to better predict responders of CRT and to investigate molecular mechanisms of dyssynchrony and CRT. The aim of this study was to establish a first humanized in vitro model of dyssynchrony and CRT. Methods Cardiomyocytes were differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells and cast into a fibrin matrix to produce engineered heart tissue (EHT). EHTs were either field stimulated in their entirety (symmetrically) or excited locally from one end (asymmetrically) or they were allowed to beat spontaneously. Results Asymmetrical pacing led to a depolarization wave from one end to the other end, which was visualized in human EHT transduced with a fast genetic Ca2+-sensor (GCaMP6f) arguing for dyssynchronous excitation. Symmetrical pacing in contrast led to an instantaneous (synchronized) Ca2+-signal throughout the EHT. To investigate acute and long-term functional effects, spontaneously beating human EHTs (0.5–0.8 Hz) were divided into a non-paced control group, a symmetrically and an asymmetrically paced group, each stimulated at 1 Hz. Symmetrical pacing was clearly superior to asymmetrical pacing or no pacing regarding contractile force both acutely and even more pronounced after weeks of continuous stimulation. Contractile dysfunction that can be evoked by an increased afterload was aggravated in the asymmetrically paced group. Consistent with reports from paced dogs, p38MAPK and CaMKII-abundance was higher under asymmetrical than under symmetrical pacing while pAKT was considerably lower. Conclusions This model allows for long-term pacing experiments mimicking electrical dyssynchrony vs. synchrony in vitro. Combined with force measurement and afterload stimulus manipulation, it provides a robust new tool to gain insight into the biology of dyssynchrony and CRT.

High-cadence observations of the Galactic bulge by the microlensing surveys led to the discovery of a handful of extremely short-timescale microlensing events that can be attributed to free-floating or wide-orbit planets. Here, we report the discovery of another strong free-floating planet candidate, which was found from the analysis of the gravitational microlensing event OGLE-2019-BLG-0551. We report the analysis of the microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-0677. A small feature in the light curve of the event leads to the discovery that the lens is a star-planet system. Although there are two degenerate solutions that could not be distinguished for this event, both lead to a similar planet-host mass ratio. We perform a Bayesian analysis based on a Galactic model to obtain the properties of the system and find that the planet corresponds to a super-Earth/sub-Neptune with a mass $M_{\mathrm{planet}} = {3.96}^{+5.88}_{-2.66}\mathrm{M_\oplus}$. The host star has a mass $ M_{\mathrm{host}} = {0.12}^{+0.14}_{-0.08}\mathrm{M_\odot}$. The projected separation for the inner and outer solutions are ${0.63}^{+0.20}_{-0.17}$~AU and ${0.72}^{+0.23}_{-0.19}$~AU respectively. At $\Delta\chi^2=\chi^2({\rm 1L1S})-\chi^2({\rm 2L1S})=46$, this is by far the lowest $\Delta\chi^2$ for any securely-detected microlensing planet to date, a feature that is closely connected to the fact that it is detected primarily via a "dip" rather than a "bump"., Comment: 15 page, 12 figures, Published in AJ

Mapping the presence of trees is an important tool for assessing tree-covered habitats, their changes, and calculating variables, like forest area and fragmentation. Despite the popularity of automated pattern recognition to make tree cover maps, their accuracy and precision are rarely tested or compared to more modest methods, like human-based pattern recognition to identify tree cover. Here, we test the performance of two computer-generated tree mapping products, the Global Change Forest database and the Carnegie Landsat Analysis System, against ground surveys and a human-made tree cover map created using Google Earth to hand digitize the presence and absence of trees in a diversified agricultural region in Costa Rica (934 km2). The human-made tree cover map properly classified 100% ground survey sites and explained 81% of the variance in percent of canopy cover values from the field. The Global Change Forest database misclassified 18 of 23 ground survey sites in deforested locations and explained 6% of the variance in percent of canopy cover values from ground surveys. The Carnegie Landsat Analysis System misclassified 9 of 23 ground survey sites in deforested locations and explained 38% of the variance in percent of canopy cover values from the field. Our results suggest that the Global Change Forest database overestimated tree cover by of 20% and the Carnegie Landsat Analysis System by 1%. We caution landscape ecologists working at fine spatial scales against using computer-generated tree cover, especially in the partially forested lands that increasingly cover the planet.

In order to exhume the buried signatures of "missing planetary caustics" in the KMTNet data, we conducted a systematic anomaly search to the residuals from point-source point-lens fits, based on a modified version of the KMTNet EventFinder algorithm. This search reveals the lowest mass-ratio planetary caustic to date in the microlensing event OGLE-2019-BLG-1053, for which the planetary signal had not been noticed before. The planetary system has a planet-host mass ratio of $q = (1.25 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}$. A Bayesian analysis yields estimates of the mass of the host star, $M_{\rm host} = 0.61_{-0.24}^{+0.29}~M_\odot$, the mass of its planet, $M_{\rm planet} = 2.48_{-0.98}^{+1.19}~M_{\oplus}$, the projected planet-host separation, $a_\perp = 3.4_{-0.5}^{+0.5}$ au, and the lens distance of $D_{\rm L} = 6.8_{-0.9}^{+0.6}$ kpc. The discovery of this very low mass-ratio planet illustrates the utility of our method and opens a new window for a large and homogeneous sample to study the microlensing planet-host mass-ratio function down to $q \sim 10^{-5}$., Comment: published by AJ

We present the most extensive and detailed reddening maps of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) derived from the color properties of Red Clump (RC) stars. The analysis is based on the deep photometric maps from the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV), covering approximately 670 deg2 of the sky in the Magellanic System region. The resulting maps provide reddening information for 180 deg2 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 75 deg2 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), with a resolution of 1.7x1.7 arcmin in the central parts of the MCs, decreasing to approximately 27x27 arcmin in the outskirts. The mean reddening is E(V-I) = 0.100 +- 0.043 mag in the LMC and E(V-I) = 0.047 +- 0.025 mag in the SMC. We refine methods of calculating the RC color to obtain the highest possible accuracy of reddening maps based on RC stars. Using spectroscopy of red giants, we find the metallicity gradient in both MCs, which causes a slight decrease of the intrinsic RC color with distance from the galaxy center of ~0.002 mag/deg in the LMC and between 0.003 and 0.009 mag/deg in the SMC. The central values of the intrinsic RC color are 0.886 and 0.877 mag in the LMC and SMC, respectively. We report the discovery of a planet in a binary that was discovered from the analysis of the microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-1700. We identify the triple nature of the lens from the fact that the complex anomaly pattern can be decomposed into two parts produced by two binary-lens events, in which one binary pair has a very low mass ratio of $\sim 0.01$ between the lens components and the other pair has a mass ratio of $\sim 0.3$. We find two sets of degenerate solutions, in which one solution has a projected separation between the primary and its stellar companion less than the angular Einstein radius $\thetae$ (close solution), while the other solution has a separation greater than $\thetae$ (wide solution). From the Bayesian analysis with the constraints of the event time scale and angular Einstein radius together with the location of the source lying in the far disk behind the bulge, we find that the planet is a super-Jupiter with a mass of $4.4^{+3.0}_{-2.0}~M_{\rm J}$ and the stellar binary components are early and late M-type dwarfs with masses $0.42^{+0.29}_{-0.19}~M_\odot$ and $0.12^{+0.08}_{-0.05}~M_\odot$, respectively, and the planetary system is located at a distance of $D_{\rm L}=7.6^{+1.2}_{-0.9}~{\rm kpc}$. The planet is a circumstellar planet according to the wide solution, while it is a circumbinary planet according to the close solution. The projected primary-planet separation is $2.8^{+3.2}_{-2.5}~{\rm au}$ commonly for the close and wide solutions, but the primary-secondary binary separation of the close solution, $0.75^{+0.87}_{-0.66}~{\rm au}$, is widely different from the separation, $10.5^{+12.1}_{-9.2}~{\rm au}$, of the wide solution., 10 pages, 8 figures

We report the discovery of a very young high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) system associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) MCSNRJ0513-6724 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using XMM-Newton X-ray observations. The HMXB is located at the geometrical centre of extended soft X-ray emission, which we confirm as an SNR. The HMXB spectrum is consistent with an absorbed power law with spectral index ~1.6 and a luminosity of 7x10^{33} ergs/s (0.2--12 keV). Tentative X-ray pulsations are observed with a periodicity of 4.4 s and the OGLE I-band light curve of the optical counterpart from more than 17.5 years reveals a period of 2.2324\pm0.0003 d, which we interpret as the orbital period of the binary system. The X-ray spectrum of the SNR is consistent with non-equilibrium shock models as expected for young/less evolved SNRs. This paper describes preliminary results of the interdisciplinary research and development venture lead by The Military University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland. The main task of the project is to develop remote solutions that support dogs guide during different special activities. According to the law-enforcement operational procedures, system has been designed basing on three different modules: special dogs electronic vest, mobile command center and supporting UAV (Unnamed Airborne Vehicle) platform. Project integrates such technologies as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), remote sensing tools and UAV platforms as a support device. General idea of the project comes from boarder control and law-enforcement forces whose big scope of work is related with K-9 dogs activity. The main functionality of the system is to monitor and control the K-9 dog during high level risk operations. The biggest challenge of the project is to develop official training and operational procedures suitable to the applied technology. This article presents general concept of the system and the results of validation process in scope of remote sensing (NIR , RGB) and navigation functionalities (GNSS). The set of tests has been taken with different methods and tools to establish efficient ergonomic solution. Possibilities of project application areas are also shown here in details.

Lubricants that are based on renewable raw materials have drawn increased attention in various applications, especially those related to the food industry. Due to the high requirements of environmental protection, there is a need to develop biodegradable base oils that are environmentally friendly and do not contain harmful components. The objective of the research was to obtain a base oil with a certain viscosity and certain desired lubricating properties. Base oils were obtained from Crambe abyssinica oil by means of blending with synthetic oil and oxidation. The oxidation processes were carried out in the presence of N-hydroxyphthalimide with or without CO2 as a solvent. As a final result of this study, oil bases meeting the viscosity requirements and showing suitable lubricating properties were obtained. The Raman spectra of the obtained oils were evaluated.

Objectives The aim was to study the association between venous disorders and leg symptoms in the population based cross sectional Bonn Vein Study 1 (BVS1). Methods A total of 1,350 men and 1,722 women aged 18–79 years were enrolled into BVS1. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), varicose veins (VVs), and clinical classes (C-classes/CEAP [Clinical, Etiological, Anatomical, and Pathophysiological]) were determined by clinical and duplex investigation. Leg symptoms (heaviness, tightness, swelling, pain after standing or sitting, pain while walking, muscle cramps, itching, and restless legs) were assessed in a standardized interview. For 2,624 subjects (48.7% male) with complete information on venous disorders, relevant characteristics and information on at least one leg symptom, multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. Results More women (929/63.0%) reported at least one leg symptom within the last 4 weeks than men (560/48.7%). Prevalence of reported symptoms increased with age (45.4% of the 18–29 year olds, 73.9% of the 70–79 year olds). Leg symptoms were more frequent in obese and underweight subjects. As confirmed by clinical and duplex examination 22.6% had VV and 15.8% had CVI. VV (OR: 1.4; CI: 1.1–1.7) and CVI (OR: 1.8; CI: 1.3–2.3) were significantly associated with reporting at least one leg symptom. In particular, there was a positive association of VV and CVI with itching, feeling of heaviness, tightness, swelling, and pain after standing or sitting. C2–C6 showed a statistically significant association with feeling of heaviness, tightness, swelling, and itching, while for pain on walking and muscle cramps this was shifted towards C classes C3–C6 and C3–C4, respectively. Conclusions Venous disorders show significant associations with several leg symptoms. Itching, feeling of heaviness, or tightness seem to be more closely related than other symptoms. The associations between C classes and symptoms seem to be restricted to classes C2 or higher.

Raw vegetable oil from Crambe abyssinica was subjected to oxidative treatment to enhance its viscosity. The oxidation processes were carried out in the presence of N-hydroxyphthalimide with or without supercritical CO2 as a solvent. Four spectroscopic techniques (Raman, UV-VIS, FT-IR, NMR) were applied to assess the chemical changes taking place during the oxidation. Raman and NMR spectroscopy proved best in the assessment of the chemical transformations leading to increased viscosity of the modified vegetable oil.

A Bridge Deflection Monitoring with GPSThis paper introduces results of investigation carried on by The Applied Geomatics Section in Military University of Technology. Research includes possibilities of monitoring dynamic behavior of a bridge using high rate GPS data. Whole event was executed with collaboration of The Road and Bridge Management and The Warsaw Geodesy Company. Interdisciplinary approach with this project allows authors to get reliable information about investigating constructions and their respond for true traffic loading detected by GPS receivers. Way of compute data and used software (TRACK) are also shown in this paper.

The development of chromatographic methods for natural products and pharmaceuticals can be challenging for many reasons. These challenges can include poor or no UV absorbance, or similar UV spectra among components. For components that exhibit poor or no UV absorbance, practitioners typically explore alternative modes of detection such as FLR and evaporative light scattering (ELS). In this work, we will present a method for analyzing the non-UV absorbing active pharmaceutical ingredient memantine HCl and its associated metabolites. We will use a compact mass detector to efficiently track these components during the method development. We will demonstrate the linearity, reproducibility, and specificity achievable with mass detection. Components of the sample were identified and tracked by mass detection over the method development runs. For final UPLC method, we selected low pH (125 mM formic acid in water), CORTECS C18+ column at 45 °C, and gradient of 5 – 90% with acetonitrile over 5 minutes. Flow rate and injection volume were set to 0.6 mL/min and 1.0µL, respectively. Memantine HCl and its associated metabolites do not absorb in UV as they lack chromophore but ionize well and are detectable by MS. To demonstrate that MS detection is suitable for analysis of these compounds, we tested the developed method for linearity, reproducibility, and specificity. Linearity show good correlation between peak responses and concentrations with correlation coefficient (r2) greater than 0.999 for each component. System suitability results of 5 replicate injections were evaluated and compared with the USP specifications. The developed UPLC method was applied for memantine HCl assay in the tablet formulation. In summary, mass detection enabled accurate identification and tracking of non-UV absorbing components during the method development process. Reproducibility and linearity of the developed UPLC/MS method was excellent.

Variability in the hemispheric-scale atmospheric circulation can be directly linked to variations in surface environmental features, such as temperature, precipitation, salinity of water bodies, and pollutant transport. One indicator of the behavior of the hemispheric-scale circulation is the circumpolar vortex (CPV). This research utilizes a geographic information system approach to characterize variability in the Northern Hemispheric (NH) CPV. Specifically, the area, shape, and centroid of the January NHCPV are analyzed for 1959–2001 because it may provide insight about relationships between hemispheric-scale circulation and global temperature change. We also use a new means of characterizing the hemispheric-scale circulation using a ‘circularity ratio’ (Rc). Results suggest that the January NHCPV has exhibited no long-term trends in area or shape, and that the mean centroid is positioned at approximately 85.3°N, 178.0°W. Regional patterns emerge, which suggest that the area and circularity are associated with variability in surface temperature and moist static energy. Furthermore, the area of the January NHCPV is associated with variability in the Arctic Oscillation, while the shape is tied to variability in the Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern. These results will facilitate understanding of the relationship between hemispheric-scale circulation, regional circulation, and local temperatures. Copyright © 2005 Royal Meteorological Society.

The linear and non‐linear stability of an incompressible swept attachment‐line boundary layer are analysed, within the Görtler‐Hämmerlin framework. The system of perturbation equations is solved using spectral collocation method based on Chebyshev polynomials. The global solution method utilised for solving the eigenproblem yields the full spectrum of the least damped waves. The influence of suction and blowing on critical Reynolds numbers is analysed. A comparison of the present paper linear solutions for both zero suction and a layer in which blowing and suction are applied with the Spalart's DNS solutions (obtained for small initial disturbances) shows very good agreement. The transition Reynolds numbers have been predicted using well known exp(n) method and results are compared with the experimental data of Powilleit.

This article contains a description of community traumatic brain injury (TBI) treatment patterns and outcomes based solely on workers' compensation administrative records for Washington State.Administrative records available from the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries data warehouse of administrative records are used to describe medical rehabilitation services and return to work (RTW) referrals for cases of TBI between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2002. These data represent official records for disability determination and referral for vocational rehabilitation (VR) services.At total of 797 cases were identified all of which had identifiable treatment trajectories. No disability was the outcome in 9.0% of cases; temporary disability in 53.5% of cases, permanent disability in 31.1% of cases. Only 48% of surviving cases include a medical rehabilitation phase. This phase included only inpatient services in 26.5% of referred cases, only ambulatory services in 59.6% and both inpatient and ambulatory services in 13.9%. Only about half of surviving cases were referred for RTW services. Employment rates were similar to those published from other state rehabilitation programs.State/community treatment and disability outcome patterns are more diverse than the expected sequence of acute treatment, medical rehabilitation and VR. Employment rates after referral for VR were 65%.

We prove that regular 2-SAT with signs of the form | i and J, i, where the underlying truth value set forms a lattice, is solvable in quadratic time in the size of the input, and in the case where the lattice is fixed, in linear time in the size of the formula. Moreover, we show that the satisfiability problem for 2-CNF formulas in multi-valued logics based on arbitrary De Morgan algebras may be done in time linear in the size of a formula and quadratic in the size of the underlying algebra. All algorithms we develop find satisfying valuations if they exist.

Problem: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a public health problem but little is known about the nature of that problem in the working population. Method: The author used a national definition to identify cases in Washington State from workers' compensation (WC) hospital billing data, quantified the cost of WC insurance benefits using actuarial cost estimates, and identified high risk industries using ANSI Z16.2 typology. Results: There were 928 cases of TBI with a lifetime claim cost of $159 million from the Washington State Fund (1994-2001). Sixty percent of injuries resulted in death or disability. The highest risks of TBI are concentrated in 16 industrial insurance risk classes and the highest costs in 19 North American Industry Classification codes. Injury scenarios were identified for nine industrial insurance risk classes. Conclusions: TBI is a disabling and costly workplace injury in the state of Washington, affecting even teenagers and seniors who are not generally considered to be part of the workforce. Injury typology codes provide useful information for improving workplace safety. Impact on industry: This research provides industry with quantitative information regarding the cost of work-related traumatic brain injury and the usefulness of using workers' compensation claims data to reduce the burden of workplace injury.

Cesarean section delivery increases the cost, morbidity, and mortality of childbirth. Cesarean section rates vary nationwide with the highest rates occurring in the southern United States. The Department of Health and Human Services has published year 2000 objectives that include a 15% reduction in the cesarean section rate. This study identified factors contributing to cesarean section delivery among a cohort of college-educated black and white women in Davidson County, TN. Logistic regression models were applied to Linked Infant Birth and Death certificate data from 1990-1994. Data on singleton first births for 606 black women and 3661 white women completing 16 years of education were analyzed. College-educated African Americans were at a significantly higher risk of cesarean section delivery than whites. This difference could not be accounted for by controlling for all other variables. The geographic differences in cesarean section rates in this country may be the result of varying in provider practice styles, perceptions, or attitudes. Improving the health of women and children will require establishing a system of maternity care that is comprehensive, case-managed, culturally appropriate, and available to all women.

Strategies to reduce US infant mortality rates often focus on the black-white disparity in rates. Linked Infant Birth and Death Files for Davidson County, Tennessee, from 1990 through 1994 were used to determine infant outcomes for infants born to college-educated white and black women. Risks for adverse outcomes were identified by comparing infant deaths to live births using logistic regression analyses. The following variables entered the logistic model process: maternal and paternal age; race and education; nativity status; maternal risk factors; interpregnancy interval; parity; infant gender; tobacco or alcohol use; number of prenatal visits; trimester in which prenatal care began; marital status; gestational age; and birthweight. After adjustment for the effects of the other variables, a gestational age < 28 completed weeks of gestation was the most significant independent predictor of infant death. Black race was not identified as a significant predictor of infant mortality. Regardless of race, a decrease in infant mortality rates among college-educated women in this country depends on the prevention of preterm births. Strategies to diagnose early preterm labor must proceed from a comprehensive maternal care program for all women. Open channels of communication between patient and provider will form the cornerstone for preterm prevention-intervention programs. Analysis of state and local infant mortality data may identify regional differences in infant mortality rates and differences in risk factors associated with adverse infant outcomes.

We studied 42 infertile men, who had been surgically treated with modified Palomo method, with intraoperative phlebography of single or multiple testicular veins. We evaluated the efficacy of the performed procedure as well as the presence of other ways of recoil outflow and the connections between the venous vessels of the right testis. In 42 cases surgically treated men with varicocele only in 4 cases the varicocele have been observed additionally on the right side. We are of the opinion that the intraoperative phlebography allows us to performed the proper and the most effective method of the operation of varicocele.

Recent reports of fatigue failures of polyethylene tibial and patellar components have led to investigation of the role of design and material properties in these failures. Earlier investigations, concluding that high contact stress designs suffered greater damage in service, could not account for some of the fatigue failures. The current study hypothesizes that this failure is related to variations in the material properties of the polyethylene due to incomplete consolidation of the powder during manufacture, resulting in fusion defects. Retrieved polyethylene components and samples of polyethylene stock were examined to gain insight into the relationship between fusion defects, component failure, material forming processes, and powder grade. Statistically significant correlations (p0.05) were observed between the extent of defects and cracking, delamination, total wear damage, and duration in vivo. These correlations indicate that components manufactured from material with fusion defects may be less resistant to fatigue than components formed of fully consolidated material.
