Abstract

The clinical significance of circulating antisperm antibodies (ASA) during infertility investigation is controversial. For detection of ASA in serum, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) are widely used because of practical advantages. In the present prospective study, the prevalence of serum ASA, determined with a commercially available ELISA (Elias Inc., Freiburg) was compared in different groups: in a total of 260 subfertile patients (148 women and 112 men) with a median duration of infertility of five years, and in 190 controls (69 normal pregnant women who presented for routine pregnancy care, 41 virgins and 80 prostitutes). Evaluation of serum samples in the different groups offered median ASA-values of 11.9 U/ml in women with long-standing infertility, of 9.6 U/ml in subfertile males, of 10.6 U/ml in the normal pregnant women, of 12.2 U/ml in virgins and of 10.0 U/ml in prostitutes. Differences between patients and controls were not significant. When a cut-off at > 25 U/ml was used for definition of positivity, this ELISA revealed that 18.2% of the female and 15.2% of the subfertile male patients were ASA positive, and within the control groups, 11.6% of the normal pregnant women, 14.6% of the virgins and 21.3% of the prostitutes (not significant, also with regard to other cut-offs). Within the group of subfertile patients, no significant differences were found between ASA-positive and -negative patients with regard to medical history, results of clinical examination, causes of infertility, microbial colonisation, of genital secretions, outcome of sperm analysis, postcoital testing (PCT), and crossed in-vitro sperm cervical mucus penetration testing (SCMPT). Pregnancies were achieved within three months without any therapy in spite of high ASA-titres. The results of this study demonstrate that evaluation of serum samples of subfertile patients for antisperm antibodies by means of this commercial ELISA is without clinical relevance and cannot be recommended during infertility investigation.

Abstract

To better understand and plan for the needs of a changing military force, the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) conducted the 1992 Reserve Components Surveys. Major topics that were addressed in the member survey include: reserve pay and other income sources, military benefits, family housing expenditures, and health and dental care for Reservists. The questionnaire was mailed to 76,783 members with responses received from 47%. The objective of this report was to analyze issues relating to individual and unit readiness focusing on financial aspects. Highlights of the report include the following: (a) distance from commissary and exchange locations was the most limiting factor for users; (b) 60% indicated they were satisfied with military pay and allowances; (c) the percentage of household income spent on housing appears to decline with pay grade group; (d) more than half of Reservists own their principle residences; (e) 78% of all Reservists rated their medical insurance coverage as excellent or good and 69% gave an equally high rating for dental coverage.

Abstract

Major topics that were addressed in the member survey include: amount of compensation and benefits, impact of service on civilian jobs and family life, quality of unit leadership, downsizing of Reserves, and perceptions about skill development and its relationship to civilian jobs. The questionnaire was mailed to 76,783 members with responses received from 47%. The objective of this report was to analyze issues relating to individual and unit readiness for mobilization and deployment. Highlights of the report include the following: (a) individual preparedness increased as pay grade increased; (b) junior enlisted were less likely to have workable dependent-care arrangements in case of emergency; (c) the most common potential work-related problem from mobilization was loss of income; (d) the burden placed on the spouse was the most cited family-related problem; (e) nearly 90% of respondents reported that the opportunity to serve the country made at least a moderate contribution to their most recent retention/reenlistment decision.

Abstract

The composite of Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) subtests used to select applicants for entry-level training in Army clerical schools was evaluated by correlating composite scores with training performance scores. The clerical composite (CL) had high validity for this criterion but an alternate composite of Arithmetic Reasoning, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge scores produced from multiple regression analyses had even higher validity. 8. Determinants of Army Career Intentions

Abstract

The research models the career intentions and choice of tour length of U.S. Army recruits. We find that the reasons for enlisting can be used to create four basic motivational factors using factor analysis. These factors, in addition to a number of demographic and socioeconomic variables, appear to be significant determinants of career intentions and choice of tour length. The qualitative response models were estimated using a polynomial logit framework. The analyses suggest that motivational factors such as reasons for enlisting can be successfully incorporated into empirical models to predict career choice and other behavior. The results of this study demonstrate that the factors that motivate citizen soldiers appear to differ from the factors that motivate career soldiers. The Army may be able to use this information to design incentive programs and advertising strategies to attract various groups of potential recruits.

9. Survey data on home gardeners and urban gardening practice in Pune, India.

Abstract

The role of home gardens as productive green spaces in emerging megacities has so far been neglected when addressing pathways for sustainable urban development. This data article provides quantitative data from a questionnaire survey on gardening practice among home gardeners in Pune, one of the fastest growing cities in India and the Asian-Pacific region. Data include growing decisions and food production, fertilization, treatment of pests or irrigation as well as the cultural and recreational use of the garden. The survey also covered sociodemographic background information on the respondents and their gardening motivations. The data were used for a research article to build indicators for economic, environmental and socio-cultural sustainability dimensions of urban agriculture and analyze gardeners' characteristics that lead to increased sustainability outcomes entitled "Home Gardening Practice in Pune (India), the Role of Communities, Urban Environment and the Contribution to Urban Sustainability"[1]. The data and questionnaire are provided at the Open Research Data repository at the Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), Germany (https://doi.org/10.4228/ZALF.DK.109). Abstract

The data presented in this DiB article offers a full overview on the scientific sustainable intensification literature from 1997 to 2016. It consists of articles retrieved from the Scopus and the Web of Science databases that feature "Sustainable Intensification" (SI) as search term in title, abstract or author keywords. Information on bibliography, geographic focus and proposed sustainable intensification practices of each publication is recorded. The suggested sustainable intensification practices were assigned into 26 SI approaches constituting bundles of practices using a qualitative classification approach. The data is related to the research article entitled"Conceptualising fields of action for sustainable intensification. A systematic literature review and application to regional case studies" [1]. The information builds a baseline to assess the developments of the knowledge on SI and especially its practical implementation in depth. The database provides a comprehensive and structured overview of the SI literature and guidance for scholars and practitioners working on the topic.

Abstract

Background: Based on a classification scheme for facial pain syndromes and a binomial (yes/no) facial pain questionnaire, we previously reported on the ability of an artificial neural network (ANN) to recognize and correctly diagnose patients with different facial pain syndromes., Objectives: We now report on an updated questionnaire, the development of a secure web-based neural network application and details of ANNs trained to diagnose patients with different facial pain syndromes., Methods: Online facial pain questionnaire responses collected from 607 facial pain patients (395 female, 65%, ratio F/M 1.86/1) over 5 years and 7 months were used for ANN training., Results: Sensitivity and specificity of the currently running ANN for trigeminal neuralgia type 1 and trigeminal neuralgia type 2 are 92.4 and 62.5% and 87.8 and 96.4%, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity are 86.7 and 95.2% for trigeminal neuropathic pain, 0 and 100% for trigeminal deafferentation pain and 100% for symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia and postherpetic neuralgia. Sensitivity is 50% for nervus intermedius neuralgia (NIN) and 0% for atypical facial pain (AFP), glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). Specificity for AFP, NIN and TMJ is 99% and for GPN, 100%., Conclusions: We demonstrate the utilization of question-based historical self-assessment responses used as inputs to design an ANN for the purpose of diagnosing facial pain syndromes (outputs) with high accuracy.

Abstract

Objectives: To analyze the clinical relevance of chlamydial serology in seminal plasma (SP)/serum for male fertility., Methods: We determined the IgG, IgA, and IgM class antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis with a lipopolysaccharide-directed standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in the serum of 173 asymptomatic subfertile couples and in the same-day SP in a prospective study. The semen quality evaluation was done using aliquots of the same ejaculate (eg, sperm analysis, leukocytes, bacterial cultures, sperm functional capacity). The medical history, clinical examination, postcoital testing, and determination of subsequent fertility were also done., Results: The antichlamydial antibodies of the 3 classes were significantly interrelated, and SP Chlamydia IgA antibodies were significantly associated with the findings in the serum. The evidence for previous or persistent chlamydial infection was significantly more frequent in the female partners of men with Chlamydia antibodies in the serum and/or Chlamydia IgA antibodies in the SP. The chlamydial serology results in the SP/serum were not associated with the sperm quality, leukocytes, semen culture findings, or sperm functional capacity., Conclusions: The chlamydial serology results (ie, IgG, IgA, and IgM antibodies in SP/serum) determined using a lipopolysaccharide-directed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were not indicative of reduced sperm function or subsequent fertilizing capacity., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc.
