Abstract

Abstract The electron (anti-)neutrino component of the T2K neutrino beam constitutes the largest background in the measurement of electron (anti-)neutrino appearance at the far detector. The electron neutrino scattering is measured directly with the T2K off-axis near detector, ND280. The selection of the electron (anti-)neutrino events in the plastic scintillator target from both neutrino and anti-neutrino mode beams is discussed in this paper. The flux integrated single differential charged-current inclusive electron (anti-)neutrino cross-sections, dσ/dp and dσ/d cos(θ), and the total cross-sections in a limited phase-space in momentum and scattering angle (p > 300 MeV/c and θ ≤ 45°) are measured using a binned maximum likelihood fit and compared to the neutrino Monte Carlo generator predictions, resulting in good agreement.

Abstract

The goal of the ASACUSA (Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) CUSP experiment at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator is to measure the ground state hyperfine splitting of antihydrogen in order to test whether CPT invariance is broken. The ASACUSA hodoscope is a detector consisting of two layers of 32 plastic scintillator bars individually read out by two serially connected silicon photo multipliers (SiPMs) on each end. Two additional layers for position resolution along the beam axis were scintillator fibres, which will now be replaced by scintillating tiles placed onto the existing bars and also read out by SiPMs. If the antiproton of antihydrogen annihilates in the center of the hodoscope, particles (mostly pions) are produced and travel through the various layers of the detector and produce signals. The hodoscope was successfully used during the last data taking period at CERN. The necessary time resolution to discriminate between particles travelling through the detector from outside and particles produced in the center of the detector was achieved by the use of waveform digitisers and software constant fraction discrimination. The disadvantage of this readout scheme was the slow readout speed, which was improved by two orders of magnitude. 5. An RFX transcription factor regulated ciliogenesis in the progenitors of choanoflagellates and animals

Abstract

Little is known about the origins of the transcriptional modules that coordinate cell-type specific functions in animals. The controlled expression of one cellular feature – the cilium – was likely critical during early animal evolution. Two key transcription factors, RFX and FoxJ1, coordinate ciliogenesis in animals but are absent from the genomes of most other ciliated eukaryotes, raising the question of how the transcriptional regulation of ciliogenesis has evolved. To reconstruct the evolution of the RFX/FoxJ1 transcriptional module and its role in the regulation of ciliogenesis, we investigated RFX and FoxJ1 function in one of the closest living relatives of animals, the choanoflagellateSalpingoeca rosetta. Targeted disruption of theS. rosettaRFX homologcRFXaresulted in delayed cell proliferation and aberrant ciliogenesis, marked by the collapse and resorption of nascent cilia. Ciliogenesis genes andfoxJ1were significantly down-regulated incRFXamutants, consistent with a pre-animal ancestry for this transcriptional module. We also found that cRFXa protein preferentially binds to a sequence motif that is enriched in the promoters ofS. rosettaciliary genes and matches the sequence motif bound by animal RFX proteins. These findings suggest that RFX coordinated ciliogenesis before the divergence of animals and choanoflagellates, and that the deployment of this module may have provided a mechanism to differentiate ciliated and non-ciliated cell types in early animal evolution.

7. O-015 Results of urological consultation in the setting of IVF clinic

Abstract

Study question In the management of male infertility, we investigated whether urological consultation could improve the live birth rate, and who should visit urologists in the setting of IVF clinic. Summary answer Urologic consultation resulted in improvement of semen quality and live birth rate with more IVF use in those with adverse semen parameters. What is known already Male factor infertility exists in about a half of infertility couples. This accounts for about 8% in male reproductive age. Therefore, ideally every male partner of infertility couples attempting conception should have a urological evaluation. However, it is not very easy to access urologists who specialized in reproductive medicine in Japan because we have very few of such urologists. One the other hand, a certain number of couples are wasting their time during IVF failure without urological evaluation. Study design, size, duration This is a single-institution retrospective study. We enrolled male partners of infertility couples who visited Kameda IVF clinic Makuhari, Chiba, Japan, between May 2016 and December 2020 and followed at least one year. Live birth rate and the frequency of IVF use were investigated according to semen quality and urological consultation status. Chi-square tests and T tests were used to compare the results between groups. Participants/materials, setting, methods Among 2225 couples who visited Kameda IVF clinic Makuhari, 803 male partners (Group A, 36.0%) were evaluated by urologists who were specialized in male reproductive medicine. Remaining 1422 patients did not (Group B, 64.0%). Lifestyle evaluation, physical examination, semen analyses, scrotal ultrasonography, blood test including sexual hormones and zinc concentration were performed in Group A. Semen analyses and lifestyle evaluation were performed in Group B. Urological treatments were done according to factors of male infertility. Main results and the role of chance Semen quality was worse in Group A as compared to Group B (sperm motility, 28.5±16.9% vs. 46.0±17.0%; total sperm count, 105±108 million/mL vs. 176±155; total motile sperm count, 34±49 vs.87±98; mean±S.D.; p = 0.0001, 0.0001, 0.0001, A vs. B, respectively). After urologic consultation and managements, sperm motility was improved to 34±18% (p = 0.001). Live birth rate in groups A and B were similar (56.0% vs. 57.2%), however couples who obtained a child in Group A used IVF more often than those in Group B (70% vs. 49.9%, p 50 million, n = 900), 119 visited urologist (31.1%, Group 3) and 781 did not (Group 4). Live birth rate and the use of IVF were not different between Groups 3 and 4 (51.1% vs.60.9%; 50.4% vs. 62.9%). Limitations, reasons for caution This study is a single-institution, retrospective study in the setting of IVF clinic. There may be a selection bias since men first visit gynecologists. These could affect the study results. Wider implications of the findings In the setting of IVF clinic, urologic consultation resulted in improved semen quality and better live birth rate with the use of IVF, especially in those who have adverse semen parameters. The results of this study encourage patients to see urologists and physicians to introduce urologist to patients. Trial registration number not applicable

Abstract

The ion source combining laser ablation of solid targets in helium gas and an RF ion guide system with an RF carpet was constructed for a reference measurement of isotope shifts. It is important for performing planned collinear laser spectroscopy of RI beams from the SLOWRI facility at RIKEN, especially for medium-mass nuclei of refractory elements. They are difficult to produce via the ISOL method owing to the chemical properties of the elements. The laser-ablated ions of Ni, Zr, Ag, Ta, W, and Ba were transported by the ion guide and mass spectra consistent with the natural abundance were successfully observed corresponding to 105–107 ions per laser pulse.

Abstract

Magnetized nonneutral plasma composed of electrons or positrons couples to the local microwave environment via cyclotron radiation. The equilibrium plasma temperature depends on the microwave energy density near the cyclotron frequency. Fine copper meshes and cryogenic microwave absorbing material were used to lower the effective temperature of the radiation environment in ASACUSA's Cusp trap, resulting in significantly reduced plasma temperature.

Abstract

This paper reports the first T2K measurement of the transverse kinematic imbalance in the single-$\pi^+$ production channel of neutrino interactions. We measure the differential cross sections in the muon-neutrino charged-current interaction on hydrocarbon with a single $\pi^+$ and at least one proton in the final state, at the ND280 off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The extracted cross sections are compared to the predictions from different neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators. Overall, the results show a preference for models which have a more realistic treatment of nuclear medium effects including the initial nuclear state and final-state interactions.

Abstract

We report measurements of the flux-integrated ν̅μ and ν̅μ + νμ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced $\mu^\pm$ and no detected charged pion or proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton Module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, $p_{\mu}>400~{\rm MeV}/c$ and $\theta_{\mu}200~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\pi}600~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\rm p}

Abstract

The ASACUSA (Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) collaboration plans to measure the ground-state hyperfine splitting of antihydrogen in a beam at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator with initial relative precision of 10-6 or better, to test the fundamental CPT (combination of charge conjugation, parity transformation and time reversal) symmetry between matter and antimatter. This challenging goal requires a polarised antihydrogen beam with a sufficient number of antihydrogen atoms in the ground state. The first measurement of the quantum state distribution of antihydrogen atoms in a low magnetic field environment of a few mT is described. Furthermore, the data-driven machine learning analysis to identify antihydrogen events is discussed., 18 pages, 10 figures

14. Fiber-form nanostructured tungsten formation by helium arc discharge plasma irradiation under a gas pressure of 5 kPa

Abstract

Fiber-form nanostructured tungsten (W) formation was successfully demonstrated using a helium (He) arc discharge plasma generated at a gas pressure of 5 kPa. The W substrate was exposed to the He arc discharge plasma at a surface temperature of about 1000 °C. A bias voltage, Vb, was applied between the W substrate and the vacuum chamber to control the incident He ion energy, Ei. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations showed that the W surface was slightly roughened, but no fiber-form nanostructure was formed at a Vb of −22 V. On the other hand, fiber-form nanostructure growth was observed at a Vb of −112 V. Furthermore, cross-sectional SEM observations revealed the presence of He bubbles inside the W fibers and the sub-surface layer of the W substrate. As collisions between ions and neutrals in the sheath cannot be ignored at 5 kPa, a theoretical evaluation of Ei distribution was performed using the collisional sheath model. Furthermore, an experimental evaluation of Ei using the sputtering yield of carbon substrates by He arc discharge plasma irradiation was carried out, and then Ei was obtained to be 40–50 eV for Vb = −112 V. Therefore, the distribution of Ei at Vb = −112 V is considered to contain more than 20 eV, which is necessary for the growth of fiber-form nanostructured W found in conventional low-gas pressure plasma irradiation experiments.

15. Effect of administering activated lymphocytes originated from the dam on the immune cell reaction in Holstein calves

Abstract

Injection of lymphokine activated killer (LAK) cells is known as useful for activation of cellular immune system. Although the effect of LAK cells has been clarified in human or mice, this effect on function of immune cells has not been examined in calves. Healthy ten Holstein calves were injected with the LAK cells 2 days after birth (LAK Group), and another eight calves were observed as controls (Control Group). All calves received the colostrum formulation on the day of birth, and then, were inoculated with a live attenuated vaccine of bovine herpesvirus (BHV)-1 at 2 (the first vaccination) and 6 (the second vaccination) weeks after birth. Peripheral blood of their dam obtained 3 weeks before calving was used for preparation of LAK cells. Blood samples were taken prior to vaccine inoculation and 3 days after the first inoculation, as well as 3 and 6 days after the second vaccination from all calves. Numbers of CD8+ and CD21+ cells increased significantly after the second vaccination in the LAK Group compared with Control Group. The present study suggested the improved effect of injecting LAK cells originated from dams on immune cells function of young calves after BHV-1 live vaccine.

Abstract

The electron (anti-)neutrino component of the T2K neutrino beam constitutes the largest background in the measurement of electron (anti-)neutrino appearance at the far detector. The electron neutrino scattering is measured directly with the T2K off-axis near detector, ND280. The selection of the electron (anti-)neutrino events in the plastic scintillator target from both neutrino and anti-neutrino mode beams is discussed in this paper. The flux integrated single differential charged-current inclusive electron (anti-)neutrino cross-sections, dσ/dp and dσ/d cos(θ), and the total cross-sections in a limited phase-space in momentum and scattering angle (p > 300 MeV/c and θ ≤ 45°) are measured using a binned maximum likelihood fit and compared to the neutrino Monte Carlo generator predictions, resulting in good agreement., Journal of High Energy Physics, 2020 (10), ISSN:1126-6708, ISSN:1029-8479

Abstract

Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40 σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. Abstract

The ASACUSA collaboration aims at measuring the ground state hyperfine splitting of antihydrogen for probing fundamental symmetries. A cryogenic trap for mixing antiprotons and positrons serves as an antihydrogen source for in-flight spectroscopy. In order to be able to monitor the antihydrogen formation process, a dedicated Micromegas tracking detector has been designed and built to record the annihilation distribution in the trap. In this paper, we present the first results from antiproton annihilation data recorded with the Micromegas, together with a description of the event reconstruction algorithm.

Abstract

A low energy antiproton transport from the ASACUSA antiproton accumulation trap (MUSASHI trap) to the antihydrogen production trap (double cusp trap) is developed. The longitudinal antiproton energy spread after the transport line is 0.23 +- 0.02 eV, compared with 15 eV with a previous method used in 2012. This reduction is achieved by an adiabatic transport beamline with several pulse-driven coaxial coils. Abstract

High precision measurements of the ground state hyperfine structure (HFS) of muonium is a stringent tool for testing bound-state quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory, determining fundamental constants of the muon magnetic moment and mass, and searches for new physics. Muonium is the most suitable system to test QED because both theoretical and experimental values can be precisely determined. Previous measurements were performed decades ago at LAMPF with uncertainties mostly dominated by statistical errors. At the J-PARC Muon Science Facility (MUSE), the MuSEUM collaboration is planning complementary measurements of muonium HFS both at zero and high magnetic field. The new high-intensity muon beam that will soon be available at H-Line will provide an opportunity to improve the precision of these measurements by one order of magnitude. An overview of the different aspects of these new muonium HFS measurements, the current status of the preparation for high-field measurements, and the latest results at zero field are presented.

Abstract

In order to test CPT symmetry between antihydrogen and its counterpart hydrogen, the ASACUSA collaboration plans to perform high precision microwave spectroscopy of ground-state hyperfine splitting of antihydrogen atom in-flight. We have developed an apparatus (“cusp trap”) which consists of a superconducting anti-Helmholtz coil and multiple ring electrodes. For the preparation of slow antiprotons and positrons, Penning- Malmberg type traps were utilized. The spectrometer line was positioned downstream of the cusp trap. At the end of the beamline, an antihydrogen beam detector was located, which comprises an inorganic Bismuth Germanium Oxide (BGO) single-crystal scintillator housed in a vacuum duct and surrounding plastic scintillators. A significant fraction of antihydrogen atoms flowing out the cusp trap were detected.

Abstract

SummaryBackground Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a hair loss disorder that commonly affects middle-aged men. To date, the properties of a number of natural or synthetic substances have been investigated for their ability to improve the condition. Aim To evaluate the hair growth-promoting activities of an extract from the root of Sophora flavescens Aiton. Methods We used a human hair keratinocyte proliferation assay and ex vivo organ cultures of human hair follicle to examine the potential of the extract to stimulate hair growth via anagen elongation. We isolated the compounds promoting the growth of epithelial cells, and determined their chemical structures. A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study for S. flavescens extract was carried out for 6 months with patients with AGA. Results The extract stimulated the proliferation of hair keratinocytes at a concentration of 0.1 ng/mL, while 100 ng/mL of the extract had a marked effect on hair shaft elongation in an organ culture of human hair follicle. Cell proliferation assay-directed fractionation led to the identification of two pterocarpan derivatives, L-maackiain and medicarpin, as active compounds that promote the proliferation of human hair keratinocytes. Studies in human subjects showed that improvement in the inspected alopecia scores in the lotion plus extract group were significant over a period of 6 months (P < 0.01). Conclusions S. flavescens root extract is effective for the treatment of AGA. The isolated two pterocarpans might have important role in this effect.

Abstract

The ASACUSA Collaboration at CERNs Antiproton Decelerator aims to measure the ground state hyperfine splitting of antihydrogen with high precision to test the fundamental symmetry of CPT (combination of charge conjugation, parity transformation, and time reversal). For this purpose an antihydrogen detector has been developed. Its task is to count the arriving antihydrogen atoms and therefore distinguish backgroundevents (mainly cosmics) from antiproton annihilations originating from antihydrogen atoms which are produced only in small amounts. A central BGO crystal disk with position sensitive read-out detects the annihilation and a surrounding two-layered hodoscope is used for tracking charged secondaries. The hodoscope has been recently upgraded to allow precise vertex reconstruction. A machine learning analysis based on measured antiproton annihilations and cosmic rays has been developed to identify antihydrogen events.

The event rate was investigated as a function of the angles between the tracks and the energy deposition in the BGO for simulated antiproton events, and for measured and simulated cosmic ray events. Identification of the antihydrogen Monte Carlo events was performed using the energy deposited in the BGO and the particle tracks. The cosmic ray background was limited to 12 mHz with a detection efficiency of 81%. The signal-to-noise ratio was improved from 0.22 s−1∕2 obtained with the detector in 2012 to 0.26 s−1∕2 in this work. SynopsisObjective Hair thickness is more important than hair density in the appearance of baldness in male with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Adenosine improves hair loss by stimulating hair growth and by thickening hair shafts in women. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hair growth efficacy and safety of topical adenosine in men with AGA. Abstract

MuSEUM is an international collaboration aiming at a new precise measurement of the muonium hyperfine structure at J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex). Utilizing its intense pulsed muon beam, we expect a ten-fold improvement for both measurements at high magnetic field and zero magnetic field. We have developed a sophisticated monitoring system, including a beam profile monitor to measure the 3D distribution of muonium atoms to suppress the systematic uncertainty.

Abstract

The aim of the ASACUSA-CUSP experiment is to form a beam of antihydrogen atoms for in-flight precision spectroscopic measurements. This is performed by trapping and mixing antiprotons and positrons in a common nested-well potential, which is sitting in a double-cusp magnetic field with minimum-B field configuration. We have built a tracking detector, the ASACUSA Micromegas Tracker (AMT) [1], to monitor and resolve annihilations on-axis from annihilations on the trapping electrode walls of the experiment, which latter is a general signature of antihydrogen formation. Data taken during the summer of 2015 is presented in order to demonstrate the first performance of the AMT detector. Abstract

A new muon beam profile monitor (MBPM) was developed to diagnose pulsed muon beams at J-PARC MUSE, mainly composed of a scintillation screen, a gated image intensifier (II), and a cooled CCD camera. The MBPM was designed to be compact so that it could be inserted into the bore of the μSR spectrometer in the D1 area and used concurrently. The spatial resolution of the MBPM was evaluated to be better than 1.4 mm, depending on the II gain. Such high-resolution muon beam profiles were obtained online for a positive muon beam with a kinetic energy of approximately 4 MeV. The contribution from the decay positrons to beam profiles was significantly reduced owing to the II gating. The linearity of the MBPM was evaluated on the basis of the number of decay positrons monitored by the μSR spectrometer. A linear response within a deviation of ±5% was confirmed over more than two orders of magnitude. In addition, a 3D imaging capability, used in vacuum, and immunity against moderate magnetic fields were demonstrated.

Abstract

The aim of the ASACUSA-CUSP experiment at CERN is to produce a cold, polarised antihydrogen beam and perform a high precision measurement of the ground-state hyperfine transition frequency of the antihydrogen atom and compare it with that of the hydrogen atom using the same spectroscopic beam line. Towards this goal a significant step was successfully accomplished: synthesised antihydrogen atoms have been produced in a CUSP magnetic configuration and detected at the end of our spectrometer beam line in 2012 [1]. During a long shut down at CERN the ASACUSA-CUSP experiment had been renewed by introducing a new double-CUSP magnetic configuration and a new semi-cylindrical tracking detector (AMT) [2], and by improving the transport feature of low energy antiproton beams. The new tracking detector monitors the antihydrogen synthesis during the mixing cycle of antiprotons and positrons. In this work the latest results and improvements of the antihydrogen synthesis will be presented including highlights from the last beam time.

Abstract

The ASACUSA collaboration has developed a detector consisting of a large size BGO crystal to detect an atomic antihydrogen beam, and performed the direct detection of antihydrogen atoms. Energy spectra from antihydrogen annihilation on the BGO crystal are discussed in comparison to simulation results from the GEANT4 toolkit. Background mainly originating from cosmic rays were strongly suppressed by analyzing the energy deposited in the BGO and requiring a multiplicity of charged pions. Thus antihydrogen events were identified.

Abstract

Aim: Major depression is expected to become the leading contributor to disease burden worldwide by 2020. Previous studies have shown that the societal cost of depression is not less than that of other major illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases or AIDS. Nevertheless, the cost of depression in Japan has never been examined. The goal of the present study was to estimate the total cost of depression in Japan and to clarify the characteristics of this burden. Methods: A prevalence-based approach was adopted to measure the total cost of depression. The total cost of depression was regarded as being comprised of the direct cost, morbidity cost and mortality cost. Diagnoses included in this study were depressive episodes and recurrent depressive disorder according to the ICD-10 or major depressive disorder according to the DSM-IV. Data were collected from publicly available statistics and the World Mental Health Japan Survey database. Results: The total cost of depression among adults in Japan in 2005 was estimated to be ¥2.0 trillion. The direct cost was ¥0.18 trillion. The morbidity cost was ¥0.92 trillion, while the mortality cost was ¥0.88 trillion. Conclusion: The societal costs caused by depression in Japan are enormous, as in other developed countries. Low morbidity costs and extremely high mortality costs are characteristic in Japan. Effective interventions for preventing suicide could reduce the societal costs of depression.

Aim: This study aimed to test reliability and validity of the Japanese-version Cognitive Therapy Awareness Scale, a self-rating scale that measures basic knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) concepts and methodology. Furthermore, we explored optimal cutoff score to demonstrate required standard of CBT competency. Methods: The reliability and validity of the scale was tested among 252 mental health professionals. The participants' number of readings relevant to CBT, as well as their experience in training and practice in CBT were used as external standards of competency. Results: The scale has good internal consistency (the Kuder-Richardson formula 20 = 0.76). Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this paper is to report on the Rework Program, a type of high-level rehabilitation program developed in Japan, and on Cognitive-Behavioral Group Therapy for Rework (CBGTR), which was also developed in Japan. Methods: With regard to the Rework Program, we first discuss conceptual issues, including the need for the Rework Program, rework identity, destigmatization as a desired outcome, and the perceived significance of the Rework Program. Its purpose, historical background, framework, criteria for participation, staffing, program categories, and assessment issues are then described. With regard to CBGTR, this paper describes its purpose, historical background, structure, staffing, content, shared themes, and group advantages. Results: As of 30 June 2010, 81 facilities in Japan offer the Rework Program; 55 of these facilities also provide CBGTR. Discussion: In Japan, the Rework Program and CBGTR are established practices. Systematic program standardization and effectiveness studies are currently being performed. These innovations in Japan may provide insight and ideas to colleagues in other regions.

Abstract

Improving patient adherence to antidepressant treatment is an important issue. Patients' attitudes toward symptoms, results, causes, disease course, and effective treatment of depression can influence their adherence to therapy. We aimed to assess the efficacy of an educational leaflet designed to improve patients' attitudes toward depression and antidepressant treatment. Participants were one hundred twenty-two outpatients of three psychiatric clinics in Japan who met the DSM-IV criteria for depression. Patients in the intervention group received an educational leaflet at the start of the study. Participants filled in The Antidepressant Compliance Questionnaire (ADCQ) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) before and after the intervention. Intervention group showed greater improvements on the total score of ADCQ, the score on the “positive beliefs regarding antidepressants” subscale. They maintained the scores on the “perceived doctor–patient relationship” subscale, where the control group lowered those scores. No significant difference in improvement in BDI scores was observed between groups. The intervention using an educational leaflet had a significant positive impact on patients' attitudes toward depression and antidepressant treatment. Our results indicate that the educational leaflet is an effective tool for enhancement of face-to-face education by medical professionals. Abstract

Aim: Suicide is a major public health concern in Japan but little is known about the prevalence of and risk factors for suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts. The aim of the present study was to clarify the prevalence of and risk factors for important suicide-related outcomes. Methods: Important suicide-related outcomes and risk factors were assessed in face-to-face interviews with 2436 adult respondents in seven areas as part of the World Health Organization (WHO) World Mental Health Survey Initiative. Mental disorders were assessed with the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Results: The lifetime prevalence estimates of suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts were 10.9%, 2.1%, and 1.9%, respectively. Risk of suicide plans and attempts was highest when suicidal ideation occurred at an early age and within the first year of ideation. In middle-aged individuals, the period after first employment and the presence of mental disorders were risk factors. Conclusions: Risk of suicide plans and attempts is highest when suicidal ideation occurred at an earlier age and within the first year of ideation. Mental disorders are as predictive of the suicide-related outcomes examined here, and comorbidity is an important predictor.

Abstract

Background:The 24-item Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS-24) is a short version of the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale, which is a self-report inventory for depressogenic schemata.Objective:The object of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the DAS-24 (DAS-24-J).Methods:Subjects consisted of non-clinical sample 1 (248 university students), non-clinical sample 2 (872 Japanese company employees) and a clinical sample (59 depressed out-patients).Results:Internal consistency was satisfactory in all three samples, Cronbach’s α coefficient being higher than 0.85. Test–retest reliability was satisfactory in non-clinical sample 1. The interclass correlation coefficient was 0.79 and there was no significant difference in the average score of DAS-24-J between the two points. The DAS-24-J showed satisfactory concurrent validity with the Japanese Irrational Belief Test-20 (r= 0.76); Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire – Revised total (r= 0.46), negative (r= 0.53) and positive (r=−0.41); and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (r= 0.44 for non-clinical sample, r= 0.63 for clinical sample). The clinical sample showed a significantly higher DAS-24-J score than non-clinical sample 2. According to a factor analysis combining all three samples, three factors were extracted: factor 1 (11 items) corresponded with ‘achievement’ in the original version, factor 2 (6 items) with ‘self-control’ and factor 3 (5 items) with ‘dependency’.Conclusion:The DAS-24-J is a reliable and valid instrument to measure depressogenic schemata in Japanese.
