Introduction: When intubation is required during a neonatal emergency, it is imperative there are no delays in collecting equipment. Current practice is for the Intubation Assistant to gather intubation equipment with no memory adjuncts. This study aimed to develop a Neonatal Intubation Flowchart (NIF) and test whether it improves performance in equipment collection. Methodology: Using simulation, a control group (n = 21) was compared to an intervention group (utilizing prototype NIF 1) (n = 24), with both groups consisting of neonatal nurses, midwives, and junior and senior pediatric doctors. The simulation involved a neonate requiring emergency intubation and the participant was tasked to collect the intubation equipment. The outcomes measured were Percentage of Equipment Collected, Time to Collect Equipment, and Amount of Questions Asked. Following post-simulation feedback, the NIF 2 was developed. The same simulation was repeated to an intervention group (n = 28) which utilized NIF 2. Results: The NIF 2 displayed a significantly better Time to Collect Equipment compared to control and NIF 1 (Mean [M] = 64.3-102.0 and 150.8 s, respectively). The NIF 2 had a significantly better Percentage of Equipment Collected compared to the control and NIF 1 (M = 96%-59% and 87%, respectively). The NIF 2 demonstrated significantly less Amount of Questions Asked compared to the control and NIF 1 groups (Median = 0-1 and 2, respectively). Conclusion: The NIF 2 provides a significantly superior method to collect equipment, in a quicker time, with less distracting questions asked, compared to current practice.

This study determined the DE, ME, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of N, and N retention of spray field forages (Bermuda grass, forage sorghum, and sweet sorghum) fed to pigs and the effects of the supplemental feed enzymes on energy and N utilization. A basal diet was formulated with 96% corn and 4% amino acids, minerals, and vitamins. Test diets contained 85% basal diet + 15% Bermuda grass, forage sorghum, or sweet sorghum. Allzyme SSF (Alltech, Nicholasville, KY) was used as a feed enzyme, which was composed of cellulase, glucanase, xylanase, phytase, and protease. The basal diet and test diets were evaluated by using 4 sets of 2 × 2 Latin square designs consisting of 2 pigs and 2 periods with a total of 32 barrows (38.7 ± 7.9 kg). Each period (10-d adjustment and 4-d collection) had 2 Latin squares. The 2 treatments were levels of enzyme supplementation (0 or 200 mg/kg). Pigs received experimental diets twice daily (0700 and 1700 h) at a fixed amount based on BW of pigs (0.09 × BW0.75 kg). On d 10, chromic oxide (0.5%) was added to the diets at 1700 h as an external marker. Fecal and urine samples were collected during 4 consecutive days. The basal diet contained 3,850 kcal DE/kg, 3,769 kcal ME/kg, 86.06% ATTD of N, and 71.10% N retention and was not affected by enzyme supplementation. Bermuda grass contained 893 kcal DE/kg, 845 kcal ME/kg, -16.50% ATTD of N, and -37.49% N retention and tended to be improved by enzyme supplementation to 1,211 kcal DE/kg (P = 0.098), 1,185 kcal ME/kg (P = 0.081), and -10.54% N retention (P = 0.076). The ATTD of N of Bermuda grass increased (P < 0.05) to 0.08% by enzyme supplementation. The forage sorghum contained 1,520 kcal DE/kg, 1,511 kcal ME/kg, -0.72% ATTD of N, and -16.99% N retention. The sweet sorghum contained 1,086 kcal DE/kg, 1,061 kcal ME/kg, -75.47% ATTD of N, and -49.22% N retention. Enzyme supplementation did not improve energy digestibility of forage sorghum and sweet sorghum. Nitrogen in these forages was poorly utilized. In conclusion, spray field forages including Bermuda grass, forage sorghum, and sweet sorghum can partly be utilized in pig feed to provide energy, although N is rather poorly digested. Feed enzymes could enhance both energy and N utilization in Bermuda grass but not sorghum.

Ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements of solar absorption spectra can provide ozone total columns with a precision of 2% but also independent partial column amounts in about four vertical layers, one in the troposphere and three in the stratosphere up to about 45km, with a precision of 5–6%. We use eight of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) stations having a long-term time series of FTIR ozone measurements to study the total and vertical ozone trends and variability, namely, Ny-Ålesund (79° N), Thule (77° N), Kiruna (68° N), Harestua (60° N), Jungfraujoch (47° N), Izaña (28° N), Wollongong (34° S) and Lauder (45° S). The length of the FTIR time series varies by station but is typically from about 1995 to present. We applied to the monthly means of the ozone total and four partial columns a stepwise multiple regression model including the following proxies: solar cycle, quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Arctic and Antarctic Oscillation (AO/AAO), tropopause pressure (TP), equivalent latitude (EL), Eliassen–Palm flux (EPF), and volume of polar stratospheric clouds (VPSC). At the Arctic stations, the trends are found mostly negative in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, very mixed in the middle stratosphere, positive in the upper stratosphere due to a large increase in the 1995–2003 period, and non-significant when considering the total columns. The trends for mid-latitude and subtropical stations are all non-significant, except at Lauder in the troposphere and upper stratosphere and at Wollongong for the total columns and the lower and middle stratospheric columns where they are found positive. At Jungfraujoch, the upper stratospheric trend is close to significance (+0.9 ± 1.0% decade−1). Therefore, some signs of the onset of ozone mid-latitude recovery are observed only in the Southern Hemisphere, while a few more years seem to be needed to observe it at the northern mid-latitude station.

The abundance of chlorine in the Earth's atmosphere increased considerably during the 1970s to 1990s, following large emissions of anthropogenic long-lived chlorine-containing source gases, notably the chlorofluorocarbons. The chemical inertness of chlorofluorocarbons allows their transport and mixing throughout the troposphere on a global scale, before they reach the stratosphere where they release chlorine atoms that cause ozone depletion. The large ozone loss over Antarctica was the key observation that stimulated the definition and signing in 1987 of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty establishing a schedule to reduce the production of the major chlorine- and bromine-containing halocarbons. Owing to its implementation, the near-surface total chlorine concentration showed a maximum in 1993, followed by a decrease of half a per cent to one per cent per year, in line with expectations. Remote-sensing data have revealed a peak in stratospheric chlorine after 1996, then a decrease of close to one per cent per year, in agreement with the surface observations of the chlorine source gases and model calculations. Here we present ground-based and satellite data that show a recent and significant increase, at the 2σ level, in hydrogen chloride (HCl), the main stratospheric chlorine reservoir, starting around 2007 in the lower stratosphere of the Northern Hemisphere, in contrast with the ongoing monotonic decrease of near-surface source gases. Using model simulations, we attribute this trend anomaly to a slowdown in the Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation, occurring over several consecutive years, transporting more aged air to the lower stratosphere, and characterized by a larger relative conversion of source gases to HCl. This short-term dynamical variability will also affect other stratospheric tracers and needs to be accounted for when studying the evolution of the stratospheric ozone layer.

Continuous carbon monoxide (CO) total column densities above the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) campus in Mexico City have been derived from solar absorption infrared spectroscopic measurements since October 2007. Its diurnal evolution is used in the present study in conjunction with other ground-based and satellite data to develop a top-down emission estimate of the annual CO emission of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA). The growth-rate of the total column around noon under low ventilation conditions is calculated and allows us to derive the average surface emission-flux at UNAM, while similar measurements taken at the edge of the MCMA in Tecámac provide information on background CO levels in the Mexico basin. Based on 3 yr of measurements, CO column measurements from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) satellite instrument are used to reconstruct the spatial distribution of this anthropogenic pollutant over the MCMA. The agreement between the measured columns of the satellite and ground-based measurements is excellent, particularly when a comparison strategy based on time-displaced air masses is used. The annual emission of the Mexico Megacity is estimated to be (2.15 ± 0.5) Tg yr-1 for the year 2008, while the official inventory for that year reported 1.6 Tg yr -1. The difference is slightly higher than the conservative uncertainty estimated in this work suggesting that the emission might be underestimated by the conventional bottom-up method. A larger discrepancy is found in the spatial distribution of the emissions, when comparing the emission flux over UNAM (derived from the ground-based measurement) with that of the inventory integrated over a representative area. The methodology presented here represents a new and useful strategy to evaluate the contribution of megacities to the global anthropogenic gas emissions. Time series of total column abundances of hydrogen chloride (HCl), chlorine nitrate (ClONO2), and hydrogen fluoride (HF) were determined from ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra recorded at 17 sites belonging to the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) and located between 80.05° N and 77.82° S. By providing such a near-global overview on ground-based measurements of the two major stratospheric chlorine reservoir species, HCl and ClONO2, the present study is able to confirm the decrease of the atmospheric inorganic chlorine abundance during the last few years. This decrease is expected following the 1987 Montreal Protocol and its amendments and adjustments, where restrictions and a subsequent phase-out of the prominent anthropogenic chlorine source gases (solvents, chlorofluorocarbons) were agreed upon to enable a stabilisation and recovery of the stratospheric ozone layer. The atmospheric fluorine content is expected to be influenced by the Montreal Protocol, too, because most of the banned anthropogenic gases also represent important fluorine sources. But many of the substitutes to the banned gases also contain fluorine so that the HF total column abundance is expected to have continued to increase during the last few years. The measurements are compared with calculations from five different models: the two-dimensional Bremen model, the two chemistry-transport models KASIMA and SLIMCAT, and the two chemistry-climate models EMAC and SOCOL. Thereby, the ability of the models to reproduce the absolute total column amounts, the seasonal cycles, and the temporal evolution found in the FTIR measurements is investigated and inter-compared. This is especially interesting because the models have different architectures. The overall agreement between the measurements and models for the total column abundances and the seasonal cycles is good. Linear trends of HCl, ClONO2, and HF are calculated from both measurement and model time series data, with a focus on the time range 2000–2009. This period is chosen because from most of the measurement sites taking part in this study, data are available during these years. The precision of the trends is estimated with the bootstrap resampling method. The sensitivity of the trend results with respect to the fitting function, the time of year chosen and time series length is investigated, as well as a bias due to the irregular sampling of the measurements. The measurements and model results investigated here agree qualitatively on a decrease of the chlorine species by around 1% yr−1. The models simulate an increase of HF of around 1% yr−1. This also agrees well with most of the measurements, but some of the FTIR series in the Northern Hemisphere show a stabilisation or even a decrease in the last few years. In general, for all three gases, the measured trends vary more strongly with latitude and hemisphere than the modelled trends. Relative to the FTIR measurements, the models tend to underestimate the decreasing chlorine trends and to overestimate the fluorine increase in the Northern Hemisphere. At most sites, the models simulate a stronger decrease of ClONO2 than of HCl. In the FTIR measurements, this difference between the trends of HCl and ClONO2 depends strongly on latitude, especially in the Northern Hemisphere.

Using a database of spectra collected with an airborne infrared spectrometer between 1978 and 2005, the longest record of this type, we have searched for a temporal trend in the stratospheric OCS amount. The total column above 200 hPa, in latitudes from 30° to 60°N, shows a change of about 0.77 ± 0.80% per year relative to the 2010 value which is 1.34 × 1015 molecules cm−2; thus not a significant change. Observations are made from the base of the stratosphere and are uniquely suited to determining the stratospheric OCS abundance.

A solar-viewing Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) at Thule, Greenland (76.5°N, 68.8°W, 225 m MSL), has been in operation as part of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change [NDACC; formerly the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC)] since 1999. Observations have been made, on average, 77 days yr−1 during the 8 months, excluding polar night. The semiautonomous operation of the instrument, including its associated optical, cryogenic, and control systems, is of primary importance to acquiring long-term data records efficiently and is herein described. Discussed in this paper are the data processing and spectra analysis methodology that are used to convert the measured interferograms into geophysical data products. Vertical profile retrievals derived from the high-resolution solar absorption spectra use the optimal estimation method. Total column amounts then represent the integration of these vertical profiles. As an example of this process, results are presented for daily average total column amounts of HF, HCl, ClONO2, and CCl2F2 from 2001 through 2007. The means of unperturbed summertime observations are used in a preliminary study of their annual trends.

This paper presents extensive validation analyses of ozone observations from the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) satellite instruments: the ACE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) and the Measurement of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation (ACE-MAESTRO) instrument. The ACE satellite instruments operate in the mid-infrared and ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared spectral regions using the solar occultation technique. In order to continue the long-standing record of solar occultation measurements from space, a detailed quality assessment is required to evaluate the ACE data and validate their use for scientific purposes. Here we compare the latest ozone data products from ACE-FTS and ACE-MAESTRO with coincident observations from satellite-borne, airborne, balloon-borne and ground-based instruments, by analysing volume mixing ratio profiles and partial column densities. The ACE-FTS version 2.2 Ozone Update product reports more ozone than most correlative measurements from the upper troposphere to the lower mesosphere. At altitude levels from 16 to 44 km, the mean differences range generally between 0 and +10% with a slight but systematic positive bias (typically +5%). At higher altitudes (45-60 km), the ACE-FTS ozone amounts are significantly larger than those of the comparison instruments by up to ~40% (typically +20%). For the ACE-MAESTRO version 1.2 ozone data product, agreement within ±10% (generally better than ±5%) is found between 18 and 40 km for the sunrise and sunset measurements. At higher altitudes (45-55 km), systematic biases of opposite sign are found between the ACE-MAESTRO sunrise and sunset observations. While ozone amounts derived from the ACE-MAESTRO sunrise occultation data are often smaller than the coincident observations (by as much as -10%), the sunset occultation profiles for ACE-MAESTRO show results that are qualitatively similar to ACE-FTS and indicate a large positive bias (+10 to +30%) in this altitude range. In contrast, there is no significant difference in bias found for the ACE-FTS sunrise and sunset measurements. These systematic effects in the ozone profiles retrieved from the measurements of ACE-FTS and ACE-MAESTRO are being investigated. This work shows that the ACE instruments provide reliable, high quality measurements from the tropopause to the upper stratosphere and can be used with confidence in this vertical domain

Hydrogen chloride (HCl) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) are respectively the main chlorine and fluorine reservoirs in the Earth's stratosphere. Their buildup resulted from the intensive use of man-made halogenated source gases, in particular CFC-11 (CCl3F) and CFC-12 (CCl2F2), during the second half of the 20th century. It is important to continue monitoring the evolution of these source gases and reservoirs, in support of the Montreal Protocol and also indirectly of the Kyoto Protocol. The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) is a space-based instrument that has been performing regular solar occultation measurements of over 30 atmospheric gases since early 2004. In this validation paper, the HCl, HF, CFC-11 and CFC-12 version 2.2 profile data products retrieved from ACE-FTS measurements are evaluated. Volume mixing ratio profiles have been compared to observations made from space by MLS and HALOE, and from stratospheric balloons by SPIRALE, FIRS-2 and Mark-IV. Partial columns derived from the ACE-FTS data were also compared to column measurements from ground-based Fourier transform instruments operated at 12 sites. ACE-FTS data recorded from March 2004 to August 2007 have been used for the comparisons. These data are representative of a variety of atmospheric and chemical situations, with sounded air masses extending from the winter vortex to summer sub-tropical conditions. Typically, the ACE-FTS products are available in the 10–50 km altitude range for HCl and HF, and in the 7–20 and 7–25 km ranges for CFC-11 and -12, respectively. For both reservoirs, comparison results indicate an agreement generally better than 5–10% above 20 km altitude, when accounting for the known offset affecting HALOE measurements of HCl and HF. Larger positive differences are however found for comparisons with single profiles from FIRS-2 and SPIRALE. For CFCs, the few coincident measurements available suggest that the differences probably remain within ±20%.

The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE), also known as SCISAT, was launched on 12 August 2003, carrying two instruments that measure vertical profiles of atmospheric constituents using the solar occultation technique. One of these instruments, the ACE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS), is measuring volume mixing ratio (VMR) profiles of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) from the upper troposphere to the lower mesosphere at a vertical resolution of about 3–4 km. In this study, the quality of the ACE-FTS version 2.2 N 2 O data is assessed through comparisons with coincident measurements made by other satellite, balloon-borne, aircraft, and ground-based instruments. These consist of vertical profile comparisons with the SMR, MLS, and MIPAS satellite instruments, multiple aircraft flights of ASUR, and single balloon flights of SPIRALE and FIRS-2, and partial column comparisons with a network of ground-based Fourier Transform InfraRed spectrometers (FTIRs). Overall, the quality of the ACE-FTS version 2.2 N 2 O VMR profiles is good over the entire altitude range from 5 to 60 km. Between 6 and 30 km, the mean absolute differences for the satellite comparisons lie between -42 ppbv and +17 ppbv, with most within ±20 ppbv. This corresponds to relative deviations from the mean that are within ±15%, except for comparisons with MIPAS near 30 km, for which they are as large as 22.5%. Between 18 and 30 km, the mean absolute differences are generally within ±10 ppbv, again excluding the aircraft and balloon comparisons. From 30 to 60 km, the mean absolute differences are within ±4 ppbv, and are mostly between -2 and +1 ppbv. Given the small N 2 O VMR in this region, the relative deviations from the mean are therefore large at these altitudes, with most suggesting a negative bias in the ACE-FTS data between 30 and 50 km. In the comparisons with the FTIRs, the mean relative differences between the ACE-FTS and FTIR partial columns are within ±6.6% for eleven of the twelve contributing stations. This mean relative difference is negative at ten stations, suggesting a small negative bias in the ACE-FTS partial columns over the altitude regions compared. Excellent correlation ( R =0.964) is observed between the ACE-FTS and FTIR partial columns, with a slope of 1.01 and an intercept of -0.20 on the line fitted to the data.

The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) satellite was launched on 12 August 2003. Its two instruments measure vertical profiles of over 30 atmospheric trace gases by analyzing solar occultation spectra in the ultraviolet/visible and infrared wavelength regions. The reservoir gases HNO3, ClONO2, and N2O5 are three of the key species provided by the primary instrument, the ACE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS). This paper describes the ACE-FTS version 2.2 data products, including the N2O5 update, for the three species and presents validation comparisons with available observations. We have compared volume mixing ratio (VMR) profiles of HNO3, ClONO2, and N2O5 with measurements by other satellite instruments (SMR, MLS, MIPAS), aircraft measurements (ASUR), and single balloon-flights (SPIRALE, FIRS-2). Partial columns of HNO3 and ClONO2 were also compared with measurements by ground-based Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometers. Overall the quality of the ACE-FTS v2.2 HNO3 VMR profiles is good from 18 to 35 km. For the statistical satellite comparisons, the mean absolute differences are generally within ±1 ppbv ±20%) from 18 to 35 km. For MIPAS and MLS comparisons only, mean relative differences lie within±10% between 10 and 36 km. ACE-FTS HNO3 partial columns (~15–30 km) show a slight negative bias of −1.3% relative to the ground-based FTIRs at latitudes ranging from 77.8° S–76.5° N. Good agreement between ACE-FTS ClONO2 and MIPAS, using the Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung and Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IMK-IAA) data processor is seen. Mean absolute differences are typically within ±0.01 ppbv between 16 and 27 km and less than +0.09 ppbv between 27 and 34 km. The ClONO2 partial column comparisons show varying degrees of agreement, depending on the location and the quality of the FTIR measurements. Good agreement was found for the comparisons with the midlatitude Jungfraujoch partial columns for which the mean relative difference is 4.7%. ACE-FTS N2O5 has a low bias relative to MIPAS IMK-IAA, reaching −0.25 ppbv at the altitude of the N2O5 maximum (around 30 km). Mean absolute differences at lower altitudes (16–27 km) are typically −0.05 ppbv for MIPAS nighttime and ±0.02 ppbv for MIPAS daytime measurements.

The ACE-FTS (Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment – Fourier Transform Spectrometer) solar occultation instrument that was launched onboard the Canadian SCISAT-1 satellite in August 2003 is measuring vertical profiles from the upper troposphere to the lower mesosphere for a large number of atmospheric constituents. Methane is one of the key species. The version v2.2 data of the ACE-FTS CH4 data have been compared to correlative satellite, balloon-borne and ground-based Fourier transform infrared remote sensing data to assess their quality. The comparison results indicate that the accuracy of the data is within 10% in the upper troposphere – lower stratosphere, and within 25% in the middle and higher stratosphere up to the lower mesosphere (

Altitude profiles of ClONO2 retrieved with the IMK (Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung) science-oriented data processor from MIPAS/Envisat (Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding on Envisat) mid-infrared limb emission measurements between July 2002 and March 2004 have been validated by comparison with balloon-borne (Mark IV, FIRS2, MIPAS-B), airborne (MIPAS-STR), ground-based (Spitsbergen, Thule, Kiruna, Harestua, Jungfraujoch, Izaña, Wollongong, Lauder), and spaceborne (ACE-FTS) observations. With few exceptions we found very good agreement between these instruments and MIPAS with no evidence for any bias in most cases and altitude regions. For balloon-borne measurements typical absolute mean differences are below 0.05 ppbv over the whole altitude range from 10 to 39 km. In case of ACE-FTS observations mean differences are below 0.03 ppbv for observations below 26 km. Above this altitude the comparison with ACE-FTS is affected by the photochemically induced diurnal variation of ClONO2. Correction for this by use of a chemical transport model led to an overcompensation of the photochemical effect by up to 0.1 ppbv at altitudes of 30–35 km in case of MIPAS-ACE-FTS comparisons while for the balloon-borne observations no such inconsistency has been detected. The comparison of MIPAS derived total column amounts with ground-based observations revealed no significant bias in the MIPAS data. Mean differences between MIPAS and FTIR column abundances are 0.11±0.12×1014 cm−2 (1.0±1.1%) and −0.09±0.19×1014 cm−2 (−0.8±1.7%), depending on the coincidence criterion applied. χ2 tests have been performed to assess the combined precision estimates of MIPAS and the related instruments. When no exact coincidences were available as in case of MIPAS – FTIR or MIPAS – ACE-FTS comparisons it has been necessary to take into consideration a coincidence error term to account for χ2 deviations. From the resulting χ2 profiles there is no evidence for a systematic over/underestimation of the MIPAS random error analysis.

The experiment investigated the effects of a supplemental candy coproduct (Chocolate Candy Feed [CCF]; International Ingredient Corp., St. Louis, MO), an alternative carbohydrate source to dietary lactose, on growth performance and on health status of nursery pigs. Crossbred pigs ( = 1,408; 21 d of age and 7.1 ± 0.3 kg BW; Smithfield Premium Genetics, Rose Hill, NC) were randomly assigned to 4 treatments (16 pens/treatment and 22 pigs/pen) in a randomized complete block design: 0, 15, 30, and 45% of lactose replaced by CCF based on equal amounts of total sugars. The experimental period was divided into 3 phases: phase I (1.8 kg diet/pig for 11 ± 1 d), phase II (6.8 kg diet/pig for 17 ± 2 d), and phase III (until 49 d after weaning). Pigs received a common phase III diet. The levels of lactose, supplied by whey permeate (79.3 ± 0.8% lactose), were 20, 8, and 0% in phase I, II, and III, respectively. All experimental diets contained the same levels of essential AA and energy (ME) for each phase. Fecal scores were observed on d 5, 7, and 9 after weaning. Blood samples were taken at the end of phase I and II to measure blood urea N. The duration of phase I tended to linearly decrease ( = 0.063) with increasing CCF. In phase I, the ADFI increased ( < 0.05) with increasing CCF whereas ADG and G:F did not change. In phase II, the duration and ADFI did not change whereas ADG linearly decreased ( < 0.05) with increasing CCF. However, the G:F was not changed as CCF increased. During phase I and II together, the duration was linearly decreased ( < 0.05) as CCF increased, whereas no difference in growth performance was observed. Overall, ADFI, ADG, and G:F were not affected by replacing whey permeate with CCF in diets, indicating no adverse effects of a candy coproduct as a carbohydrate substitute to lactose on growth performance of nursery pigs. Blood urea N did not change in phase I but tended to linearly increase ( = 0.088) in phase II as CCF increased. There were no differences in fecal scores and mortality as CCF increased. However, increasing CCF tended to linearly decrease ( = 0.083) morbidity, which implies no adverse effects of a candy coproduct replacement on health status of nursery pigs. In conclusion, a candy coproduct can be used to replace up to 45% of dietary lactose for nursery pigs without negative effects on growth performance or health status. A candy coproduct could be an economical alternative to partly replace the use of lactose in swine production.

The principal gaseous components of volcanic emissions are water, carbon dioxide, and sulfur (as SO 2 , H 2 S, and OCS). Only the sulfur gases are significant on a global scale when compared with other natural and anthropogenic sources and represent less than 10% of the input. However, sulfur compounds that reach the stratosphere, when combined with volcanic or meteoric dust particles, are the main precursors of stratospheric aerosols. Those aerosols play a critical role in the regulation of incoming solar radiation and consequently global warming.

A set of previously unpredicted 16O3 strong absorption lines in the 5 μ m region are identified for the first time in balloon-borne high-resolution ( 0.003 cm - 1 ) solar spectra. These spectral features are consistent with recent ozone laboratory spectra, and are interpreted by accidental resonance effects. Some of the lines are also observed in high-resolution ground-based spectra.

A rigorous and systematic intercomparison of codes used for the retrieval of trace gas profiles from high-resolution ground-based solar absorption FTIR measurements is presented for the first time. Spectra were analyzed with the two widely used independent, retrieval codes: SFIT2 and PROFFIT9. Vertical profiles of O 3 , HNO 3 , HDO, and N 2 O were derived from the same set of typical observed spectra. Analysis of O 3 was improved by using updated line parameters. It is shown that profiles and total column amounts are in excellent agreement, when similar constraints are applied, and that the resolution kernel matrices are also consistent. Owing to the limited altitude resolution of ground-based observations, the impact of the constraints on the solution is not negligible. It is shown that the results are also compatible for independently chosen constraints. Perspectives for refined constraints are discussed. It can be concluded that the error budget introduced by the radiative transfer code and the retrieval algorithm on total columns deduced from high-resolution ground-based solar FTIR spectra is below 1%.

Local ozone production and loss rates for the arctic free troposphere (58–85° N, 1–6 km, February–May) during the TroposphericOzone Production about the Spring Equinox (TOPSE) campaign were calculated using a constrained photochemical box model. Estimates were made to assess the importance of local photochemical ozone production relative to transport in accounting for the springtime maximum in arctic free tropospheric ozone. Ozone production and loss rates from our diel steady-state box model constrained by median observations were first compared to two point box models, one run to instantaneous steady-state and the other run to diel steady-state. A consistent picture of local ozone photochemistry was derived by all three box models suggesting that differences between the approaches were not critical. Our model-derived ozone production rates increased by a factor of 28 in the 1–3 km layer and a factor of 7 in the 3–6 kmlayer between February and May. The arctic ozone budget required net import of ozone into the arctic free troposphere throughout the campaign; however, the transport term exceeded the photochemical production only in the lower free troposphere (1–3 km) between February and March. Gross ozone production rates were calculated to increase linearly with NOx mixing ratiosup to ∼300 pptv in February and for NOx mixing ratios up to ∼500 pptv in May. These NOx limits are an order of magnitude higher thanmedian NOx levels observed, illustrating the strong dependence ofgross ozone production rates on NOx mixing ratios for the majority of theobservations. The threshold NOx mixing ratio needed for netpositive ozone production was also calculated to increase from NOx∼ 10pptv in February to ∼25 pptv in May, suggesting that the NOx levels needed to sustain net ozone production are lower in winter than spring. This lower NOx threshold explains how wintertime photochemical ozone production can impact the build-up of ozone over winter and early spring. There is also an altitude dependence as the threshold NOx neededto produce net ozone shifts to higher values at lower altitudes. This partly explains the calculation of net ozone destruction for the 1–3 km layerand net ozone production for the 3–6 km layer throughout the campaign.

Recent work on new line parameters for the X 1 Σ + (0–0),(0–1) H 79 Br, H 81 Br bands and the X 1 Σ + (0–0), (0–1) HI bands, which include hyperfine structure components, has been extended for an update of spectroscopic databases in use for atmospheric spectroscopy. The updated line parameters, now incorporated in HITRAN 2001, are discussed in comparison to HITRAN 1996.

The budget of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) in the arctic free troposphere is calculated with a constrained photochemical box model using aircraft observations from the Tropospheric O 3 Production about the Spring Equinox (TOPSE) campaign between February and May. Peroxyacetic nitric anhydride (PAN) was observed to be the dominant odd nitrogen species (NO y ) in the arctic free troposphere and showed a pronounced seasonal increase in mixing ratio. When constrained to observed acetaldehyde (CH 3 CHO) mixing ratios, the box model calculates unrealistically large net NO x losses due to PAN formation (62 pptv/day for May, 1–3 km). Thus, given our current understanding of atmospheric chemistry, these results cast doubt on the robustness of the CH 3 CHO observations during TOPSE. When CH 3 CHO was calculated to steady state in the box model, the net NO x loss to PAN was of comparable magnitude to the net NO x loss to HNO 3 (NO 2 reaction with OH) for spring conditions. During the winter, net NO x loss due to N 2 O 5 hydrolysis dominates other NO x loss processes and is near saturation with respect to further increases in aerosol surface area concentration. NO x loss due to N 2 O 5 hydrolysis is sensitive to latitude and month due to changes in diurnal photolysis (sharp day–night transitions in winter to continuous sun in spring for the arctic). Near NO x sources, HNO 4 is a net sink for NO x ; however, for more aged air masses HNO 4 is a net source for NO x , largely countering the NO x loss to PAN, N 2 O 5 and HNO 3. Overall, HNO 4 chemistry impacts the timing of NO x decay and O 3 production; however, the cumulative impact on O 3 and NO x mixing ratios after a 20-day trajectory is minimal.

Isotopic ozone lines of 16O16O17O and 16O17O16O in the 5 μm region are identified for the first time in balloon-borne high-resolution (0.003 cm −1 ) solar absorption spectra. A few of these lines also are observed in ground-based spectra. These lines need to be included in analysis of atmospheric absorption spectra, in addition to the recently identified 16 O 16 O 18 O , 16 O 18 O 16 O and 16O12C34S lines in this region.

Isotopic lines of carbonyl sulfide, 16O12C34S in the ν3 region (band center 2061.446 cm −1 ) are identified for the first time in balloon-borne and ground-based high-resolution ( 0.003 cm −1 ) solar absorption spectra. A quantitative analysis of the balloon-borne data is reported. The isotopic abundance may reveal the origins of the carbonyl sulfide in the atmosphere.

An intercomparison of four Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers, operated side by side by Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), National Center for Atmospheric Research, and National Physical Laboratory groups, using two different spectral fitting algorithms, was conducted at JPL's Table Mountain Facility (TMF) during November 1996. A “blind” comparison of retrieved vertical column amounts, of preselected trace gases in preselected microwindows (mw), and subsequent reanalysis of the results are described. The species analyzed are N2 (3 mw), HF (1 mw), HCl (1 mw), CH4 (1 mw), O3 (2 mw), N2O (2 mw), HNO3 (2 mw), and CO2 (1 mw). The column agreements from the “blind” phase were within 0.5–2%, except that for HNO3, HF, and O3 the disagreement of the results was up to 10%, 5%, and 4%, respectively. It was found that several systematic effects were neglected in the “blind” phase analysis. Taking these into account in the postanalysis reduced the disagreements to 0.5–1.0% for most cases, and to less than 4%, 3%, and 1% for HNO3, HF, and O3 respectively. It was concluded that zero off-sets caused by detector nonlinearity were the main cause of the large errors in HNO3 and other gases (i.e., CO2) retrieved from the HgCdTe spectra. At shorter wavelengths (i.e., HF) we conclude that incomplete modeling of the instrument line shapes (ILS) was the main cause of column differences larger than 1%.

We describe a technique that uses relatively sparse observations from aircraft of vertical column amounts together with a quasi-conserved parameter, potential vorticity (PV), to reconstruct column abundances on a near-global scale. Stratospheric column amounts for a number of gases (including HF, NO, NO2, HNO3, ClONO2, O3, and HCl) were measured during airborne field deployments to both polar regions in four separate years. Functions are determined that relate vertical column amounts to the isentropic potential vorticity at two potential temperature levels (440 K and 520 K) at the observation points. Gridded PV values, derived from National Center for Environmental Prediction temperature and heights, are used to reconstruct column distributions for an entire polar region. Reconstructed fields are used to explore the usefulness of column observations to describe vertically averaged properties of the polar vortex and to compare one year and hemisphere with another.

Improved line parameters are generated for the HBr (0–1) fundamental band. These new parameters, which include hyperfine structure, allow fitting of HBr absorption features from gas cells used for long-term validation of infrared high-resolution spectrometers.

Hyperfine lines associated with the X 1 Σ + (0–0) and (0–1) bands of H 127 I are generated. Discussion of the HI line parameters in the HITRAN and SAO databases is presented. The new (0–0) line parameters are based on previously published far-infrared constants. High-resolution laboratory spectra in the infrared fundamental band region are presented and analyzed for new fine structure spectroscopic constants, which are combined with available hyperfine structure constants for calculating the new (0–1) line parameters.

Results of the comparison of carbon monoxide ground-based infrared solar spectroscopic measurements with data obtained during 1994 Measurement of Air Pollution From Space (MAPS) flights are presented. Spectroscopic measurements were performed correlatively with April and October MAPS flights by nine research groups from Belgium, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States. Characterization of the techniques and error analysis were performed. The role of the CO a priori profile used in the retrieval was estimated. In most cases an agreement between spectroscopic and MAPS data is within estimated MAPS accuracy of _+ 10%.

As part of the Second European Stratospheric Arctic and Mid-latitude Experiment (SESAME) field campaign, observations were made during the period from October 1994 to April 1995 at Sondre Stromfjord, Greenland (67°N, 53°W). Using a Fourier transform spectrometer, high resolution (0.06 cm-1) infrared spectra were recorded with the sun as a radiation source. Column amounts of trace gases including HCl, HF, HNO3, N2O and O3 are shown for five time periods during the course of the 1994-95 Arctic winter. Results are compared with lower stratospheric potential vorticity fields to describe variations in trace gas column amounts.

A study was conducted to examine the effects of dietary protein percentage and selection for divergence in fat content on growth and body composition in mice. The three lines used had been selected as follows: high epididymal fat pad weight as a percentage of body weight (HF), low epididymal fat pad weight as a percentage of body weight (LF) and a randomly selected control (RC). Mice from each line were allotted at weaning (3 wk of age) to one of four dietary protein percentages: 12, 16, 20, and 24%. Growth and efficiency of feed conversion were measured at 2-wk intervals and mice were killed and body composition was measured at 9-wk of age. Overall, HF mice grew faster were more efficient at converting feed to body weight gain, and had empty carcasses with a higher percentage of tat (P

The basic stratospheric chemical and radiative processes which could be modified by volcanic injections to the stratosphere are reviewed. Observed effects after two major volcanic eruptions (El Chichon and Mount Pinatubo) are reported. Measurements of SO2, NO, NO2, HNO3, HCl, and O3 clearly show the impact of volcanic injections to the stratosphere. Large amounts of SO2 (up to 20 Mt) are observed to be injected by energetic volcanoes. Gaseous SO2 is converted into sulfate aerosols within about 30 days. Reactive nitrogen (NO and NO2) are reduced by up to 50% of their column amounts in midlatitudes. Some observations have shown HNO3 amounts to be increased where NO2 is decreased; other observations have not shown an HNO3 increase. Heterogeneous reactions on the surfaces of sulfate aerosol particles are implicated in the conversion of NO and NO2 into HNO3. The direct injection of HCl by volcanic eruptions may increase the local column by up to 40%. Satellite observations have revealed local ozone decreases in the range of 5 to 10% of the column following El Chichon and Mount Pinatubo eruptions.

Observations of record-breaking ozone depletion during the Arctic spring of 2011 were made at 76˚ N in Thule, Greenland. The ozone total column amount of 290 DU measured on 18 March 2011 is the lowest value from the 12-year observation record and represents an ozone depletion of up to 48% of a typical March column. The unique 2010 – 11 vortex was characterized by sustained low stratospheric temperatures and stability that resisted breakup through March. Simultaneous observations of O3, HF, HCl, HNO3, and ClONO2 demonstrate strong subsidence and substantial conversion of chlorine from its normal reservoirs.

Three Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectromenters were based on board the NASA DC-8 during the second Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition (AASE II) in 1992. Two FTIRs used solar absorption and one used thermal emission. We compare over 2000 measurements from these 3 FTIRs, on 12 DC-8 flights, for closely coincident air masses and times, both inside and outside the polar vortex. In the majority of cases the offset biases are quite small, in the range 1-4%, and comparable to the absolute precisions expected. In most cases the rms scatter is in the range 4-11%; this scatter is unlikely to be geophysical, but rather is probably instrumental or analytical in origin.

A cooperative experiment involving 999 litters was conducted at seven stations to assess the reproductive performance of gilts and sows fed different levels of energy during gestation and lactation (21 d) for three consecutive parities. Treatments consisted of two gestation (G) and two lactation (L) diets in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Gestation treatments were diets fed to provide normal (5.9 Mcal/d, NG) or high (7.4 Mcal/d, HG) energy intake; lactation treatments were diets that contained 0 (NL) or 9% added fat (HL). Sows were provided ad libitum access to feed during the lactation period. Feeding the higher energy level during gestation increased pig birth weight (P < .01) and pig weight gain to weaning (P < .01). Sows that had been fed the higher level of energy during gestation (HG) ate less feed during lactation (P < .01) and lost more weight during lactation (P < .01). Increasing lactation energy intake by adding fat resulted in greater pig weight gains to 21 d of age (P < .01). Sows fed the HG-NL combination had fewer pigs on d 21 than all other treatment groups (G x L; P < .01). There was a G x L x parity interaction (P < .05) for days to estrus after weaning. Sows on the NG-HL or HG-NL treatments had increased days to estrus in Parity 1 (P < .05), whereas those on the NG-NL treatments had increased days to estrus in Parities 2 and 3 (P < .05). The HG-HL treatment minimized days to postweaning estrus during the three-parity study.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Time series of total column abundances of hydrogen chloride (HCl), chlorine nitrate (ClONO2), and hydrogen fluoride (HF) were determined from ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra recorded at 17 sites belonging to the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) and located between 80.05° N and 77.82° S. These measurements are compared with calculations from five different models: the two-dimensional Bremen model, the two chemistry-transport models KASIMA and SLIMCAT, and the two chemistry-climate models EMAC and SOCOL. The overall agreement between the measurements and models for the total column abundances and the seasonal cycles is good. Trends of HCl, ClONO2, and HF are calculated from both measurement and model time series data, with a focus on the time range 2000–2009. Their precision is estimated with the bootstrap resampling method. The sensitivity of the trend results with respect to the fitting function, the time of year chosen and time series length is investigated, as well as a bias due to the irregular sampling of the measurements. For the two chlorine species, a decrease is expected during this period because the emission of their prominent anthropogenic source gases (solvents, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)) was restricted by the Montreal Protocol 1987 and its amendments and adjustments. As most of the restricted source gases also contain fluorine, the HF total column abundance was also influenced by the above-mentioned regulations in the time period considered. The measurements and model results investigated here agree qualitatively on a decrease of the chlorine species by around −1 % yr−1. The models simulate an increase of HF of around +1 % yr−1. This also agrees well with most of the measurements, but some of the FTIR series in the Northern Hemisphere show a stabilisation or even a decrease in the last few years. In general, for all three gases, the measured trends vary more strongly with latitude and hemisphere than the modelled trends. Relative to the FTIR measurements, the models tend to underestimate the decreasing chlorine trends and to overestimate the fluorine increase in the Northern Hemisphere. At most sites, the models simulate a stronger decrease of ClONO2 than of HCl. In the FTIR measurements, this difference between the trends of HCl and ClONO2 depends strongly on latitude, especially in the Northern Hemisphere.

Observations of stratospheric column amounts of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO) and nitric acid (HNO3) have been made following major eruptions of the El Chichon and Mt. Pintatubo volcanoes. Midlatitude abundances of NO2 and NO were reduced by as much as 70% in the months following the appearance of the volcanic aerosols as compared to volcanically quite periods. There are heterogeneous reactions which could occur on the volcanic aerosols to convert NO2 into HNO3 but no commensurate increase in HNO3 column amounts was observed at the times of NO2 decrease.

Two experiments were conducted at separate commercial farms. In Exp. 1, all primiparous sows and an equal number of multiparous sows weaned each week were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups. Treatments consisted of one i.m. injection on the day of weaning of 0, 50, 100, or 200 mg of beta-carotene. Sows were checked for estrus with boars once daily and mated at first estrus after weaning. A sample of sows (n = 100) was selected for determination of plasma beta-carotene and vitamin A. Blood samples were obtained from another group (n = 120) 14 d after injection to determine plasma progesterone. In Exp. 2, treatments consisted of i.m. injection of 200 mg of beta-carotene, 50,000 IU of vitamin A, or vehicle on the day of weaning, on the day of mating, and on d 7 after mating. In both experiments, the sow diet was supplemented with 11,000 IU/kg of vitamin A. In Exp. 1, there was no effect of dose of beta-carotene on the interval from weaning to estrus or on the repeat service rate. There was a dose x parity interaction on the number of pigs born dead (P < .01) and born alive (P < .10), because treatment with beta-carotene did not affect reproduction in primiparous sows, but litters subsequently farrowed by multiparous sows had more pigs born alive and fewer pigs born dead. There was a dose x day interaction (P < .05) on plasma beta-carotene; beta-carotene was elevated on d 6 and 13 after injection.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A high-resolution IR spectrometer aboard the NASA Electra aircraft to measure the total column amount of SO2, O3, and HCl above the aircraft while flying over the Caribbean three weeks after the June 15 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines. South of 20 deg N latitude columns of SO2 were observed ranging from 2.0-3.7 x 10 exp 16 molecules/sq cm. In addition, the column amount of HCl averaged 1.5 x 10 exp 15 molecules/sq cm in the region of the plume. This represents a small increase in HCl above the amount, estimated from the previous measurements, that would have been presented had there been no volcanic eruption, but the increase is substantially less than that seen following the 1982 eruptions of El Chichon.

[1] The retrieval algorithm for the High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS) instrument onboard NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura satellite is presented. The algorithm is based on optimal estimation theory, using a modified Levenberg-Marquardt approach for the iterative solution. Overview of the retrieval scheme, convergence criteria, and the forward models is given. Treatments of clouds and aerosols as well as line-of-sight gradients in temperature are described. The retrievals are characterized by high vertical resolution of 1 km and negligible a priori contribution for all products in regions of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (most of the retrieval ranges). It is shown that these characteristics hold for all latitudes along a HIRDLS orbit. The weighting functions are narrow and show good sensitivity to temperature or gas perturbations in regions of high SNR. The retrieval error predicted by the algorithm consists of radiometric noise, pointing jitter error, smoothing error, and forward model error. For temperature, these components are shown for a midlatitude profile as well as for a full orbit. The predicted temperature error varies from 0.5 K to 0.8 K from the upper troposphere to the stratopause region, consistent with the empirical estimates given by Gille et al. (2008). For O3 and HNO3, the predicted errors and their useful pressure ranges are, respectively, 10–5% from 50 to 1 hPa and 5–10% from 100 to 10 hPa. These results are based on version V004 of the retrieved data, released in August 2008 to the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov).

[1] We present the first evaluation of the HNO3 data product (version 2.04.09) from the High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS) on the Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura satellite. The HIRDLS instrument obtains between 5000 and 7000 HNO3 profiles per day. HIRDLS HNO3 data are generally good over the latitude range of 64°S to 80°N and pressure range 100 to 10 hPa, with some profiles, depending on latitude, having useful information between 100 to 161 hPa. The individual profile “measured” precision is between 10 and 15%, but can be much larger if the HNO3 abundance is low or outside the 100 hPa to 10 hPa range. Global results are compared with the HNO3 observations from version 2.2 of the EOS Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), and it is found that large-scale features are consistent between the two instruments. HIRDLS HNO3 is biased 0–20% low relative to Aura MLS in the mid-to-high latitudes and biased high in the tropical stratosphere. HIRDLS HNO3 is also compared with Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS). In these mostly high-latitude comparisons the HIRDLS HNO3 data are biased 10–30% low, depending on altitude. Finally, the HIRDLS HNO3 is compared to in situ data taken by the NOAA Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (CIMS) instrument flown during the 2005 NASA Houston Aura Validation Experiment (AVE) and the ability of HIRDLS to measure HNO3 in the UTLS region is examined.

[1] The High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS) experiment was designed to provide global temperature and composition data on the region from the upper troposphere to the mesopause with vertical and horizontal resolution not previously available. The science objectives are the study of small-scale dynamics and transports, including stratosphere-troposphere exchange, upper troposphere/lower stratosphere chemistry, aerosol, cirrus and PSC distributions, and gravity waves. The instrument features 21 channels, low noise levels, high vertical resolution, and a mechanical cooler for long life. During launch most of the optical aperture became obscured, so that only a potion of an optical beam width at a large azimuth from the orbital plane on the side away from the Sun can see the atmosphere. Irrecoverable loss of capabilities include limitation of coverage to the region 65°S–82°N and inability to obtain longitudinal resolution finer than an orbital spacing. While this optical blockage also impacted radiometric performance, extensive effort has gone into developing corrections for the several effects of the obstruction, so that radiances from some of the channels can be put into retrievals for temperature. Changes were also necessary for the retrieval algorithm. The validation of the resulting temperature retrievals is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of these corrections. The random errors range from ∼0.5 K at 20 km to ∼1.0 at 60 km, close to those predicted. Comparisons with high-resolution radiosondes, lidars, ACE-FTS, and ECMWF analyses give a consistent picture of HIRDLS temperatures being 1–2 K warm from 200 to 10 hPa and within ±2 K of standards from 200 to 2 hPa (but warmer in the region of the tropical tropopause), above which HIRDLS appears to be cold. Comparisons show that both COSMIC and HIRDLS can see small vertical features down to about 2 km wavelength. While further improvements in the data are expected, these data will allow HIRDLS to provide important support toward reaching the Aura objectives.
