Abstract

The reaction pp -> pf (pi0pi0pi0) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c. The pi0pi0pi0 effective mass spectrum shows clear eta(547) and pi2(1670) signals. Branching ratios for the eta(547) and pi_2(1670) are given as well as upper limits for the decays of the omega(782), a1(1260) and a2(1320) into 3pi0., 10 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

Abstract

The reactions pp -> pf (X0) ps, where X0 is observed decaying to eta etaprime and etaprime etaprime, have been studied at 450 GeV/c. This is the first time that these channels have been observed in central production and only the second time that the etaprime etaprime channel has been observed in any production mechanism. In the eta etaprime channel there is evidence for the f0(1500) and a peak at 1.95 GeV. The etaprime etaprime channel shows a peak at threshold which is compatible with having JPC = 2++ and spin projection JZ = 0.

Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced π 0 π 0 channel has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found. Evidence is found for the f 0 (980), f 0 (1300) and f 0 (1500) in the the S -wave. and the f 2 (1270) is observed dominantly in the D 0 − -wave. In addition, there is evidence for a broad enhancement in the D -wave below 1 GeV.

Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced K + K − channel from the WA76 experiment has been performed and shows evidence for peaks in the S-wave due to the f 0 (1500) and f J (1710) with J =0. The D-wave shows no evidence for a statistically significant contribution in the 1.7 GeV mass region.

Abstract

A study of the reactions pp -> pfps(K+K-pi+pi-) and pp -> pfps(K+K-pi+pi-pi0) shows evidence for the K*K* and phi omega channels respectively. The K*K* mass spectrum shows a broad distribution with a maximum near threshold and an angular analysis shows that it is compatible with having JP = 2+. The behaviour of the cross-section as a function of centre of mass energy, and the four momentum transfer dependence, are compatible with what would be expected if the K*K* system was produced via double Pomeron exchange. The dPT behaviour of the phi omega channel is similar to what has been observed for all the undisputed qqbar states. In contrast, the dPT behaviour of the K*K* final state is similar to what has been observed for the phi phi final state and for previously observed glueball candidates.

Abstract

A study has been made of pseudoscalar mesons produced centrally in pp interactions. The results show that the eta and etaprime appear to have a similar production mechanism which differs from that of the pi0. The production properties of the eta and etaprime are not consistent with what is expected from double Pomeron exchange. The analysis confirms the previous observation that all undisputed qqbar states are suppressed at small dPT. Abstract

We study the production of meson resonance atpT≥2 GeV/c inπ− Be interactions at two beam energies (150 and 300 GeV/c). The motivation is to look for the higher twist (HT) production mechanism, expected to exist besides standard hadron production through the fragmentation process of scattered quarks and gluons, the so-called leading twist (LT) mechanism. We show that the φ, K*0 (892) andK*0 (892) are found free from HT effects with a good accuracy, as expected from HT estimates and QCD sum rules. The magnitudes of thef2(1270) andρ0 mesons signals are found larger than expected from the standard Lund (LT) Monte Carlo and from information provided bye+e− annihilation experiments. The possible connection of these excesses with HT physics is discussed. We also report the first evidence for the production off0(975) mesons in hadronic experiments at largepT.

We have performed a search for vector-vector final states centrally produced in the reaction pp→pf(VV)ps at 300 GeV/c using the CERN Ω spectrometer. Evidence is found for ωπ0, ωω, π0π0 and π+π- associated production. No evidence is found for ωϕ production.

Abstract

We study the shape of the invariant mass spectra of several resonances produced atPT≧2.0 GeV/c and observed through two-particle final states, namely thef2(1270),K*(892),\(\bar K*(892)\),K*(1430), and\(\bar K*(1430)\) mesons. The data sample comes from π− Be interactions atPlab=150 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c which have been collected using the OMEGA spectrometer at CERN. We find that although these meson resonances have their masses and widths consistent with the corresponding world average values, their shapes are all subject to the same kind of distortion: their low-mass tail is enhanced while their high-mass tail is sharply cut. This observation indicates that meson resonances produced in the fragmentation of quarks and gluons are distorted by the same damping factor in a way which preserves their masses and lifetimes.

Abstract

We present the analysis of data samples taken by the WA77 experiment for π- interactions at 300 and 150 GeV/c. The trigger selects a pair of oppositely charged particles withp T ≥2 GeV/c balancing the transverse momentum of a third high-p T track. The primary aim of this experiment was the search for higher-twist production, mainly that of vector mesons. Since there are definite predictions for the polarization of mesons produced in fragmentation and through the higher-twist mechanism, we study the polarization properties of clearly identified mesons, namely the Φ and f2(1270) mesons. The results are compatible with no polarization. This can be interpreted as a production dominantly due to parton fragmentation.

Abstract

We have performed a search for vector-vector final states centrally produced in proton proton interactions at 300 GeV/c using the CERN Ω spectrometer. Evidence is found for ωρ0 production in the reactionpp→p f (2π+2π−2π0)p s and for ωω production in the reactionpp→p f (2π+2π−2π0)p s . However no evidence is found for ωo production in the reactionpp→p f (K + K −π+π−π0)p s .

Abstract

The transverse momentum distributions for\(\rho ^0 (770),f_2 (1270),K*^0 (892),\bar K*^0 (892)\) and ϕ (1020) have been studied in thept region between 2 and 4 GeV/c and central rapidity. The data analysed come from the WA77 experiment at CERN with a 300 GeV/c π− beam incident on a Be target. These distributions are well described by the functionpt−n withn∼8. A sample of simulated events from the Lund Monte Carlo in the same experimental conditions reproduces well the data.

Abstract

We have studied the reactions $$({{\pi ^ + } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\pi ^ + } p}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} p})p \to ({{\pi ^ + } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\pi ^ + } p}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} p})(K\bar K\pi )p$$ where the $$K\bar K\pi $$ system is centrally produced, at 85 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c using the CERN Omega spectrometer. A spin-parity analysis of theK 0 K ± π ∓ system shows the presence of a strongJ PC=1++ signal which we identify as theE/f 1 (1420) meson. We also find evidence for the decayE/f 1(1420)→K 0 K 0 π 0 which determines theC-parity of this state to be positive. Alternative explanations of the data have been tested and ruled out. Hence we obtain the quantum numbers of theE/f 1 (1420) to beI G(JPC)=0+(1+).

Abstract

We have studied the ππ andK\(\bar K\) systems centrally produced in proton proton collisions at 300 GeV/c and π+/p proton collisions at 85 GeV/c using the CERN Ω spectrometer. Clear evidence forS*/fo(975) production is observed. An analysis performed on the π+ π− mass spectrum in the 1.0 GeV region, using a coupled channel formalism, shows that it is possible to describe theS*/fo(975) effect with one single resonance once interference of theS*/fo(975) with theS-wave background is introduced. The resultingS*/fo(975) parameters aremo=979±4MeV,gπ=0.28±0.04,gK=0.56±0.18 corresponding to a pole position on sheet II at (1001±2)−i(36±4) MeV. Evidence is also found for a structure having a mass of 1472±12 MeV and a width of 195±33 MeV.

Abstract

Production of multi-strange baryons and antibaryons is expected to be a useful indicator in the search for Quark-Gluon Plasma formation. Production of Ξ− and Ξ − has been observed for the first time in ultra-relativistic heavy ion interactions by the WA85 Experiment. We describe the procedure used to select these cascade candidates and show that Ξ− and Ξ − decays can be identified. Preliminary ratios of Ξ/Ξ production in sulphur-tungsten and proton-tungsten interactions are also presented.

Abstract

The reactionpp→pf(K+K-π+π-)ps, where theK+K− π+π- system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/c. TheK*0\(K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} \) final state has been observed and the cross sections for its central production are found to be the same at 300 and 85 GeV/c. TheK*0\(K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} \) final state appears to be produced as a non-resonant threshold enhancement.

Preliminary results from the WA85 Experiment at the CERN Omega Spectrometer are presented. A 200 A GeV/c beam of 22S ions was used with a tungsten target. The apparatus is used to detect V°s and charged tracks in the range PT > 0.9 GeV/c and 2.3 Λ, Λ and cascade particles is discussed. A study of the multiplicity dependence of Λ, Λ and hadron production is presented.

Abstract

Results from the WA85 Experiment at the CERN Ω Spectrometer are presented. A 200 A GeV/ c beam of 32 S ions was used with a tungsten target. The apparatus is used to detect V 0, s and charged tracks in the range p T > 0.9 GeV/ c and 2.3 Y lab Λ and negative hadrons all show a linear increase with rapidity density in the range 70–140 as expected from models based on a superposition of independent NN collisions.

Abstract

The reactionpp→p f (π+π−π0)p s , where the π+π−π0 system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/c. The π+π−π0 mass spectrum shows evidence for the η, ω anda 2 (1320) as well as an enhancement in thea 1 (1260) region. A Dalitz plot analysis of the π+π−π0 system has been performed. Thea 1 (1260) parameters coming from the fit of the 1+ S wave arem=1208±15 MeV and Γ=430±50 MeV. No evidence is found for theh 1(1170) orh 1(1380).

Abstract

The reactions pp -> pf (X0) ps, where X0 is observed decaying to pi0pi0pi0pi0, pi+pi-pi0pi0 and pi+pi-pi+pi-, have been studied at 450 GeV/c. There is evidence for an a2(1320)pi decay mode of the eta2(1645) and eta2(1870) in the pi+pi-pi0pi0 and pi+pi-pi+pi- final states. The f2(1950) is consistent with being a single resonance with a dominant f2(1270)pipi decay mode. Abstract

The production and decay properties of the f0(1370), f0(1500), f0(2000) and f2(1950) have been studied in central pp interactions at 450 GeV/c. The dPT, phi and |t| distributions of these resonances are presented. For the J = 0 states, the f0(1370) and f0(2000) have similar dPT and phi dependences. These are different to the dPT and phi dependences of the f0(980), f0(1500) and f0(1710). For the J = 2 states the f2(1950) has different dependences to the f2(1270) and f2'(1520). Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced K+K- and K0K0 channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found in each channel. The striking feature is the observation of peaks in the S-wave corresponding to the f0(1500) and fJ(1710) with J = 0. The D-wave shows evidence for the f2(1270)/a2(1320), the f2(1525) and the f2(2150) but there is no evidence for a statistically significant contribution in the D-wave in the 1.7 GeV mass region., Comment: 15 pages, Latex, 5 Figures

Abstract

A study of the centrally produced ppbar, ppbarpi, ppbarpipi and lambda lambda channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. No significant new structures are observed in the mass spectra, however, important new information on the production dynamics is obtained. A systematic study of the production properties of these systems has been performed and it is found that these systems are not produced dominantly by double Pomeron exchange., Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

Abstract

The reaction pp -> pf (eta pi pi) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c. There is clear evidence for an a2(1320)pi decay mode of the eta2(1645) and eta2(1870). In addition, there is evidence for an a0(980)pi$ decay mode of both resonances and an f2(1270)eta decay mode of the eta2(1870). Abstract

Abstract

Evidence is presented that the Pomeron act as a non-conserved vector current. A study has been made of the azimuthal angle phi, which is defined as the angle between the pT vectors of the two outgoing protons, in the reaction pp -> pp(X0) for those resonances (X0) which are compatible with being produced by double Pomeron exchange. These distributions have been compared with a model which describes the Pomeron as a non-conserved vector current and a qualitative agreement is found. Abstract

The reaction pp to pfps(K+K-K+K-) in which the K+K-K+K- system is centrally produced has been studied at 450 GeV/c. In addition to the well known f1(1285) there is evidence for two JPC=2-+ states called the eta2(1620) and eta2(1875) and a broad scalar called the f0(2000). The production of these states as a function of the dPT kinematical filter shows the behaviour expected for qqbar states. In contrast, there is evidence for two states at 1.45 GeV and at 1.9 GeV which do not show the behaviour observed for qqbar states. Abstract

Results are presented of an analysis of the reactions pp -> pf(k0k+pi-)ps and pp -> pf(K0K0pi0)ps at 450 GeV/c. Clear f1(1285) and f1(1420) signals are seen and a spin parity analysis shows that both have IG JPC=0+ 1++. The f1(1285) decays to a0(980)pi and the f1(1420) decays to K* Kbar. Both states have a similar dependence as a function of dPT consistent with what has been observed for other qqbar states. Abstract

Production of oppositely charged particle pairs at largep T is studied, where both particles, are in the central rapidity region within one unit of rapidity and nearby in azimuth. The data sample, which comes fromπ − Be interactions obtained using the CERN OMEGA spectrometer, contains events with a pair of oppositely charged particles havingp T ≧2 GeV/c recoiling, against a third one withp T ≧1 GeV/c. Our data provide new information on short range correlations involving the production of the nine possible pairs made from (π +,K +,p) and $$(\pi ^ - ,K^ - ,\bar p)$$ . Comparison with Lund Monte Carlo predictions is made. Apart from proton yields, the model reproduces correctly our data. The main discrepancies observed with protons can be attributed to hard scattering of diquarks from the target nucleons.

Abstract

We have studied the ππ and K K ̄ systems centrally produced in proton collisions at 300 GeV/c. Clear evidence for S*/fhook0(975) production is observed. An analysis performed on the π+π- mass spectrum in the 1.0 GeV region, using a coupled channel formalism, shows that it is possible to describe the S*/fhook0(975) effect with one single resonance, and requires interference of the S*/fhook0(975) with the S-wave background. The resulting S*/fhook0(975) parameters are m0 = 979 ± 4 MeV, gπ = 0.28 ± 0.04, gK = 0.56 ± 0.18. Evidence is found for a structure having a mass of 1472 ± 12 MeV and a width of 195 ± 33 MeV. © 1991.

Abstract

Results are presented of an analysis of the reaction pp→p f (K S 0 K ± π ∓ )p s at 300 GeV/ c . Clear f 1 (1285) and f 1 (1420) signals are seen. A spin-parity analysis shows that both are consistent with being 1 ++ states. The f 1 (1420) is found to decay only to K ∗ K and no 0 −+ or 1 +− waves are required to describe the data. The production of the f 1 (1285) as a function of energy is not the same as that for the f 1 (1420) whose cross section is found to be constant with energy.

Abstract

The reaction pp→pf(π+π−π+π−)ps, where the π+π−π+π− system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic states. The π+π−π+π− mass spectrum shows evidence for the f1(1285) with a mass of 1281±1 MeV and a width of 31±5 MeV. In addition there is evidence for two new enhancements at masses of 1449±4 and 1901±13 MeV with widths of 78±18 and 312±61 MeV respectively. An analysis of the state at 1.45 GeV indicates that it is not a π+π−π+π− decay mode of the f1(1420) or ι η(1440) .

Abstract

The production of ϱ 0 mesons in hadronic interactions is investigated at high transverse momentum ( p T > 2 GeV/ c ). The data come from a sample of Π − N interactions at 300 GeV/ c obtained at the CERN OMEGA spectrometer, requiring a ϱ 0 →Π + Π − with p T (pair) > 2 GeV/ c to recoil against an opposite particle with p T (opposite) > 1 GeV/ c . The signal/(signal + background) ratio of ϱ 0 production shows an increase of 38% as x E = p T (opposite)/ p T (pair) decreases from 0.5 x E x E ⩽ 0.5. This increase is not compatible with a QCD model of parton scattering and subsequent fragmentation. It is interpreted as evidence for direct ϱ 0 production via QCD higher twist processes, in terms of which a quantitative agreement with the data is found.

Abstract

The K + K − and K S 0 K S 0 systems centrally produced in the reaction pp→p f K K p s have been studied at 300 GeV/ c incident momentum. Both the K + K − and the K S 0 K S 0 mass spectra show large resonant production. For the first time in hadron collisions, clear evidence is found for the θ f 2 (1720) with parameters m =1713±10 MeV, Γ =181±30 MeV for the K + K − decay mode and m =1706±10 MeV, Γ =104±30 MeV for the K S 0 K S 0 decay mode. A spin analysis of the K + K − spectrum shows that for the θ f 2 (1720) J P =2 + is strongly favoured while 0 + and 1 − are excluded.

Abstract

We present a fast (30 μs) on-line trigger that selects, from 300 GeV/ c π − interactions, events with three tracks of transverse momentum larger than 0.9 GeV/ c . The essential features of this trigger are a fast read-out (300 ns per cluster) of wire chambers, situated on the chamber frame, and a digital computation of transverse momenta that can cope with multiple hits in the detectors of the trigger tracks. The digital computation is done with standard MBNIM modules.

Abstract

The reaction pp→p f (K + K − K + K − )p s in which the K + K − K + K − system is centrally produced has been studied at 300 GeV/ c . φφ production has been observed and the ratio σ (φK + K − )/ σ ( φφ ) is 1.0±0.3. The cross section for central production of φφ is found to be the same at 300 GeV/ c and 85 GeV/ c . An angular analysis of the φφ system favours J P =2 + over 0 − .

Abstract

Results are presented of a spin-parity analysis on a sample of ∼ 1000 E mesons centrally produced in the reactions (π+/p) p → (π+/p) (K01K±π∓) p at 85 GeV/c. The E quantum numbers are determined to be JPC = 1++. Its decay in this channel is consistent with being 100% into K∗K + c.c. and no evidenceis seen for a δ π decay mode where δ → KK. The mass and width were determined to be M = (1425 ± 2) MeV and Γ = (62 ± 5) MeV.
