Abstract

International audience; In this paper, a wideband dual polarized self-complementary connected array antenna with low radar cross section (RCS) under normal and oblique incidence is presented. First, an analytical model of the multilayer structure is proposed in order to obtain a fast and reliable predimensioning tool providing an optimized design of the infinite array. The accuracy of this model is demonstrated thanks to comparative simulations with a full wave analysis software. RCS reduction compared to a perfectly conducting flat plate of at least 10 dB has been obtained over an ultrawide bandwidth of nearly 7:1 at normal incidence and 5:1 (3.8 to 19 GHz) at 60° in both polarizations. These performances are confirmed by finite element tearing and interconnecting computations of finite arrays of different sizes. Finally, the realization of a 28x28 cell prototype and measurement results are detailed.

Abstract

The Jiangmen Neutrino Underground Observatory (JUNO) is a 20$\,$kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction near Kaiping in China. The physics program focuses on the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy with reactor anti-neutrinos. For this purpose, JUNO is located 650$\,$m underground with a distance of 53$\,$km to two nuclear power plants. As a result, it is exposed to a muon flux that requires a precise muon reconstruction to make a veto of cosmogenic backgrounds viable. Established muon tracking algorithms use time residuals to a track hypothesis. We developed an alternative muon tracking algorithm that utilizes the geometrical shape of the fastest light. It models the full shape of the first, direct light produced along the muon track. From the intersection with the spherical PMT array, the track parameters are extracted with a likelihood fit. The algorithm finds a selection of PMTs based on their first hit times and charges. Subsequently, it fits on timing information only. On a sample of through-going muons with a full simulation of readout electronics, we report a spatial resolution of 20$\,$cm of distance from the detector's center and an angular resolution of 1.6$\,^{\circ}$ over the whole detector. Additionally, a dead time estimation is performed to measure the impact of the muon veto. Including the step of waveform reconstruction on top of the track reconstruction, a loss in exposure of only 4% can be achieved compared to the case of a perfect tracking algorithm. When including only the PMT time resolution, but no further electronics simulation and waveform reconstruction, the exposure loss is only 1%., 17 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

International audience; Using structural composite materials for the fabrication of Radar Absorbing Materials (RAM) allows combining the strong load bearing capability with the radar absorbing functionality in a unique structure. This article shows the possibility to transpose an already existing metamaterial absorber to the domain of composite materials. The dielectric layers of the absorber initially designed with radio-frequency (RF) materials are replaced with fiber-reinforced composite materials and their thickness is optimized again. The working principle of the absorber is explained layer by layer on the Smith chart. The performances of the composite absorber are compared against the initial RF design and against other classical absorbers. The composite design has a total thickness of 8.9 mm and achieves a reflection coefficient below 14 dB within the band 4.6 GHz - 17.2 GHz at normal incidence. The reflection coefficient remains under -10 dB at oblique incidence up to 45°.; L'utilisation de matériaux composites structurels pour la fabrication de matériaux absorbants radar permet de combiner la capacité de charge élevée avec la fonctionnalité d'absorption radar dans une structure unique. Cet article montre la possibilité de transposer un méta matériaux absorbant déjà existant, dans le domaine des matériaux composites. Les couches diélectriques de l'absorbant initialement conçues avec des matériaux radiofréquences (RF) sont remplacées par des matériaux composites renforcés de fibres et leur épaisseur est à nouveau optimisée. Le principe de fonctionnement de l'absorbant est expliqué couche par couche sur la carte de Smith. Les performances de l'absorbant composite sont comparées à la conception RF initiale et à d'autres absorbants classiques. La conception composite a une épaisseur totale de 8,9 mm et atteint un coefficient de réflexion inférieur à -14 dB dans la bande 4,6 GHz - 17,2 GHz à incidence normale. Le coefficient de réflexion reste inférieur à -10 dB en incidence oblique jusqu'à 45 °.

Abstract

Scintillator detectors are known for their good light yield, energy resolution, timing characteristics and pulse shape discrimination capabilities. These features make the next-generation liquid scintillation detector LENA[1] (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) the optimal choice for a wide range of astro-particle topics including supernova-, solar-, and geo neutrinos. In addition to the excellent calorimetric and timing properties, scintillartor detectors (LSDs) are also capable of topology reconstruction sufficient to discriminate with adequate efficiency between electron and muon neutrino induced charge current events and neutral current events in the GeV energy range. This feature makes LENA a competitive tool for the determination of the mass hierarchy (MH) with long baseline neutrino beams such as the proposed CN2PY beam (2288 km). This work summarizes the status of the current work on track reconstruction schemes and discusses the sensitivity limit for the neutrino mass hierarchy measurement with LENA.

Abstract

A study on cosmic muons has been performed for the two identical near and far neutrino detectors of the Double Chooz experiment, placed at $\sim$120 and $\sim$300 m.w.e. underground respectively, including the corresponding simulations using the MUSIC simulation package. This characterization has allowed to measure the muon flux reaching both detectors to be (3.64 $\pm$ 0.04) $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for the near detector and (7.00 $\pm$ 0.05) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for the far one. The seasonal modulation of the signal has also been studied observing a positive correlation with the atmospheric temperature, leading to an effective temperature coefficient of $\alpha_{T}$ = 0.212 $\pm$ 0.024 and 0.355 $\pm$ 0.019 for the near and far detectors respectively. These measurements, in good agreement with expectations based on theoretical models, represent one of the first measurements of this coefficient in shallow depth installations., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

This paper presents an analytical model to design a self-complementary connected antenna array above artificial materials like high impedance surfaces (HIS). The objective of this model is to perform parametric studies to facilitate deeper understanding of a complex antenna array with a significantly shorter computation time than with electromagnetic simulators. The model of the complete structure has been designed in receiving mode when structure is illuminated with a plane wave and using transmission line model and ABCD matrix. By applying an interesting property which gives equivalence between the input impedance in transmit mode and the surface impedance in receiving mode, the impedance match of the self-complementary connected antenna array can be quickly calculated. It is also simple to evaluate the influence of the incidence angle on the reflection coefficient of a self-complementary connected antenna array above perfect electric conductor (PEC) or HIS. PEC or artificial materials can modify the antenna array behavior by either increasing the bandwidth or by adding additional bandwidths. All these results have been verified to be accurate by numerical simulations done with Ansys HFSS.

Abstract

Using the Double Chooz detector, designed to measure the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, the products of $\mu^-$ capture on $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C, $^{14}$N and $^{16}$O have been measured. Over a period of 489.5 days, $2.3\times10^6$ stopping cosmic $\mu^-$ have been collected, of which $1.8\times10^5$ captured on carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen nuclei in the inner detector scintillator or acrylic vessels. The resulting isotopes were tagged using prompt neutron emission (when applicable), the subsequent beta decays, and, in some cases, $\beta$-delayed neutrons. The most precise measurement of the rate of $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu)^{12}\mathrm B$ to date is reported: $6.57^{+0.11}_{-0.21}\times10^{3}\,\mathrm s^{-1}$, or $(17.35^{+0.35}_{-0.59})\%$ of nuclear captures. By tagging excited states emitting gammas, the ground state transition rate to $^{12}$B has been determined to be $5.68^{+0.14}_{-0.23}\times10^3\,\mathrm s^{-1}$. The heretofore unobserved reactions $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, and $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n)^{12}\mathrm B$ are measured. Further, a population of $\beta$n decays following stopping muons is identified with $5.5\sigma$ significance. Statistics limit our ability to identify these decays definitively. Assuming negligible production of $^{8}$He, the reaction $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{9}\mathrm{Li}$ is found to be present at the $2.7\sigma$ level. Limits are set on a variety of other processes.

Abstract

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\bar\nu$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. Abstract

In order to extend the performance of radar absorbing materials, it is necessary to design new structures with wideband properties and large angles of incidence which are also as thin as possible. The objective of this work, realized within the framework of the SAFAS project (self-complementary surface with low signature) is, then, the development of an ultra-wideband microwave absorber of low thickness. The design of such material requires a multilayered structure composed with dielectric layers, metasurfaces, and wide-angle impedance matching layers. This solution has been realized with on-the-shelf materials, and measured to validate the concept. At normal incidence, the bandwidth ratio, defined for a magnitude of the reflection coefficient below &minus, 10 dB, is 4.7:1 for an absorber with a total thickness of 11.5 mm, which corresponds to &lambda, /7 at the lowest operating frequency. For an incidence of 60&deg, this bandwidth ratio is reduced to 3.8:1, but the device remains ultra-wideband.

Abstract

We present the first part of a study supported by the French Ministry of Defense, entitled SAFAS, which aims at developing a low profile self-complementary radiating surface with low signature. This surface concept is intended to be used for antenna and absorber designs. We show some preliminary results for an antenna array required to work for incidences up to 60° over an ultra-wide frequency band with ratio 5:1.

Abstract

The design of array antennas including nonlinear devices requires specific simulation tools. These tools should combine the electromagnetic modeling of passive components with an appropriate description of nonlinearities potentially induced by the active circuitry. An iterative approach is proposed here for the simulation of transmitting arrays, including power amplifiers, taking into account distortion and varying antenna loads induced by coupling effects. Our approach predicts, for the first time at our knowledge, a significant effect of nonlinearity on the sidelobe levels of the active array antennas.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the atmospheric electron neutrino flux in the energy range between approximately 80 GeV and 6 TeV, using data recorded during the first year of operation of IceCube's DeepCore low energy extension. Techniques to identify neutrinos interacting within the DeepCore volume and veto muons originating outside the detector are demonstrated. A sample of 1029 events is observed in 281 days of data, of which 496 $\pm$ 66(stat.) $\pm$ 88(syst.) are estimated to be cascade events, including both electron neutrino and neutral current events. The rest of the sample includes residual backgrounds due to atmospheric muons and charged current interactions of atmospheric muon neutrinos. The flux of the atmospheric electron neutrinos is consistent with models of atmospheric neutrinos in this energy range. This constitutes the first observation of electron neutrinos and neutral current interactions in a very large volume neutrino telescope optimized for the TeV energy range., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures (accepted by PRL)

Abstract

We have performed a search for muon neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the center of the Sun with the 79-string configuration of the IceCube neutrino telescope. For the first time, the DeepCore sub-array is included in the analysis, lowering the energy threshold and extending the search to the austral summer. The 317 days of data collected between June 2010 and May 2011 are consistent with the expected background from atmospheric muons and neutrinos. Upper limits are therefore set on the dark matter annihilation rate, with conversions to limits on spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-proton cross-sections for WIMP masses in the range 20 - 5000 GeV. Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, approximately 1 km^3 in size, is now complete with 86 strings deployed in the Antarctic ice. IceCube detects the Cherenkov radiation emitted by charged particles passing through or created in the ice. To realize the full potential of the detector, the properties of light propagation in the ice in and around the detector must be well understood. This report presents a new method of fitting the model of light propagation in the ice to a data set of in-situ light source events collected with IceCube. The resulting set of derived parameters, namely the measured values of scattering and absorption coefficients vs. depth, is presented and a comparison of IceCube data with simulations based on the new model is shown. Abstract

We report on the observation of two neutrino-induced events which have an estimated deposited energy in the IceCube detector of 1.04 $\pm$ 0.16 and 1.14 $\pm$ 0.17 PeV, respectively, the highest neutrino energies observed so far. These events are consistent with fully contained particle showers induced by neutral-current $\nu_{e,\mu,\tau}$ ($\bar\nu_{e,\mu,\tau}$) or charged-current $\nu_{e}$ ($\bar\nu_{e}$) interactions within the IceCube detector. The events were discovered in a search for ultra-high energy neutrinos using data corresponding to 615.9 days effective livetime. The expected number of atmospheric background is $0.082 \pm 0.004 \text{(stat)}^{+0.041}_{-0.057} \text{(syst)}$. The probability to observe two or more candidate events under the atmospheric background-only hypothesis is $2.9\times10^{-3}$ ($2.8\sigma$) taking into account the uncertainty on the expected number of background events. These two events could be a first indication of an astrophysical neutrino flux, the moderate significance, however, does not permit a definitive conclusion at this time., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We present the first results in the search for relativistic magnetic monopoles with the IceCube detector, a subsurface neutrino telescope located in the South Polar ice cap containing a volume of 1 km$^{3}$. This analysis searches data taken on the partially completed detector during 2007 when roughly 0.2 km$^{3}$ of ice was instrumented. The lack of candidate events leads to an upper limit on the flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles of $\Phi_{\mathrm{90%C.L.}}\sim 3\e{-18}\fluxunits$ for $\beta\geq0.8$. This is a factor of 4 improvement over the previous best experimental flux limits up to a Lorentz boost $\gamma$ below $10^{7}$. Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory and its prototype, AMANDA, were built in South Pole ice, using powerful hot-water drills to cleanly bore>100 holes to depths up to 2500 m. The construction of these particle physics detectors provided a unique opportunity to examine the deep ice sheet using a variety of novel techniques. We made high-resolution particulate profiles with a laser dust logger in eight of the boreholes during detector commissioning between 2004 and 2010. The South Pole laser logs are among the most clearly resolved measurements of Antarctic dust strata during the last glacial period and can be used to reconstruct paleoclimate records in exceptional detail. Here we use manual and algorithmic matching to synthesize our South Pole measurements with ice-core and logging data from Dome C, East Antarctica. We derive impurity concentration, precision chronology, annual-layer thickness, local spatial variability, and identify several widespread volcanic ash depositions useful for dating. We also examine the interval around ∼74 ka recently isolated with radiometric dating to bracket the Toba (Sumatra) supereruption.

Abstract

Gamma-ray induced air showers are notable for their lack of muons, compared to hadronic showers. Hence, air shower arrays with large underground muon detectors can select a sample greatly enriched in photon showers by rejecting showers containing muons. IceCube is sensitive to muons with energies above ~500 GeV at the surface, which provides an efficient veto system for hadronic air showers with energies above 1 PeV. One year of data from the 40-string IceCube configuration was used to perform a search for point sources and a Galactic diffuse signal. No sources were found, resulting in a 90% C.L. upper limit on the ratio of gamma rays to cosmic rays of 1.2 x 10^(-3)for the flux coming from the Galactic Plane region (-80 deg < l < -30 deg; -10 deg < b < 5 deg) in the energy range 1.2 - 6.0 PeV. In the same energy range, point source fluxes with E^(-2) spectra have been excluded at a level of (E/TeV)^2 d��/dE ~ 10^(-12)-10^(-11) cm^2/s/TeV depending on source declination. The complete IceCube detector will have a better sensitivity, due to the larger detector size, improved reconstruction and vetoing techniques. Preliminary data from the nearly-final IceCube detector configuration has been used to estimate the 5 year sensitivity of the full detector. It is found to be more than an order of magnitude better, allowing the search for PeV extensions of known TeV gamma-ray emitters., submitted to PRD, 15 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

IceTop, the surface component of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, is an air shower array with an area of 1 km2. The detector allows a detailed exploration of the mass composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range from about 100 TeV to 1 EeV by exploiting the correlation between the shower energy measured in IceTop and the energy deposited by muons in the deep ice. In this paper we report on the technical design, construction and installation, the trigger and data acquisition systems as well as the software framework for calibration, reconstruction and simulation. Abstract

Astroparticle physics 42, 15 - 32 (2013). doi:10.1016/j.astropartphys.2012.11.003, The mass composition of high energy cosmic rays depends on their production, acceleration, and propagation. The study of cosmic ray composition can therefore reveal hints of the origin of these particles. At the South Pole, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory is capable of measuring two components of cosmic ray air showers in coincidence: the electromagnetic component at high altitude (2835 m) using the IceTop surface array, and the muonic component above ∼1 TeV using the IceCube array. This unique detector arrangement provides an opportunity for precision measurements of the cosmic ray energy spectrum and composition in the region of the knee and beyond. We present the results of a neural network analysis technique to study the cosmic ray composition and the energy spectrum from 1 PeV to 30 PeV using data recorded using the 40-string/40-station configuration of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory., Published by Elsevier Science, Amsterdam [u.a.]

22. Computer-aided diagnostics of screening mammography using content-based image retrieval

Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the main causes of death among women in occidental countries. In the last years, screening mammography has been established worldwide for early detection of breast cancer, and computer-aided diagnostics (CAD) is being developed to assist physicians reading mammograms. A promising method for CAD is content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Recently, we have developed a classification scheme of suspicious tissue pattern based on the support vector machine (SVM). In this paper, we continue moving towards automatic CAD of screening mammography. The experiments are based on in total 10,509 radiographs that have been collected from different sources. From this, 3,375 images are provided with one and 430 radiographs with more than one chain code annotation of cancerous regions. In different experiments, this data is divided into 12 and 20 classes, distinguishing between four categories of tissue density, three categories of pathology and in the 20 class problem two categories of different types of lesions. Balancing the number of images in each class yields 233 and 45 images remaining in each of the 12 and 20 classes, respectively. Using a two-dimensional principal component analysis, features are extracted from small patches of 128 x 128 pixels and classified by means of a SVM. Overall, the accuracy of the raw classification was 61.6 % and 52.1 % for the 12 and the 20 class problem, respectively. The confusion matrices are assessed for detailed analysis. Furthermore, an implementation of a SVM-based CBIR system for CADx in screening mammography is presented. In conclusion, with a smarter patch extraction, the CBIR approach might reach precision rates that are helpful for the physicians. This, however, needs more comprehensive evaluation on clinical data.

Abstract

Screening mammography has been established worldwide for early detection of breast cancer, one of the main causes of death among women in occidental countries. In this paper, we aim at moving towards computer-aided diagnostics of screening mammography. Tissue and lesion are classified using the methodology of content-based image retrieval. In addition, we aim at comprehensive evaluation and have established a large database of annotated reference images (ground truth), which has been merged and unified from different sources publicly available to research. In total, 10,509 mammographic images have been collected from the different sources. From this, 3,375 images are provided with one and 430 radiographs with more than one chain code annotations. This data supports experiments with up to 12 classes, and 233 images per class if a equal distribution is required. Using a two-dimensional principal component analysis with four eigenvalues and a support vector machine with Gaussian kernel for feature extraction and image retrieval, respectively, the precision of computer-aided diagnosis is above 80%. It therefore may be used as second opinion in screening mammography.

Abstract

In active transmitting arrays, high-power amplifiers (HPA) are conveniently used to provide microwave power at the input of each radiating element. They are generally connected to the radiating elements through isolators, designed to reduce the influence of the surroundings on the amplifiers load. Load-pull effects may indeed affect the transfer characteristics of HPAs and even destroy them above excessive Voltage Standing Wave Ratios (VSWRs). Still, isolators are generally bulky and lossy devices, and advantages could be obtained by downsizing these stages. In the perspective of reducing isolation, the impact of load variations must be predicted for a safe design of array antennas. In this paper, an original iterative approach is proposed for the simulation of transmitting arrays, supplied by HPAs driven into distorsion, taking into account varying antenna loads induced by coupling effects (see Fig. 1). The global description of the array antenna is achieved in the frequency domain through a Domain Decomposition Method (DDM). It allows to describe circuit components and antenna components altogether in highly modular schemes.

Abstract

This paper presents the design of a low profile, lightweight, broadband spiral antenna for airborne applications. A thin modified electromagnetic band gap substrate with load is used as reflector for an Archimedean spiral antenna. This new loaded electromagnetic band gap (LEBG) substrates has very wideband radiation characteristics and has an easier realization than the mushroom-like surface. The conception of the antenna has been validated by measurements. Thickness and weight of this new antenna is greatly reduced and radiation characteristics are better compared to a conventional spiral antenna with unidirectional beam.

Abstract

This paper presents different solutions allowing the thickness reduction of unidirectional spiral antennas without compromising their broadband properties. First, the effects of adding a ground plane to the radiating element are analysed. Then, the microstrip spiral antenna is loaded by chip resistors, the antenna exhibits a good circular polarization over a 3∶1 bandwidth with a thickness of 0.02λ max . In a following part, the spiral antenna is placed 0.013λ max above a lossy ground plane, a good impedance matching and circular polarization are achieved over a 9∶1 bandwidth. Finally, the spiral antenna is implemented on an EBG substrate, the thickness is 0.1 λ max , the bandwidth is limited to 70% but this solution leads to a high efficiency antenna.

Abstract

An ultra-wide-band (UWB) microstrip spiral antenna is proposed. The antenna is resistively loaded inside the substrate to maintain a good circular polarization on the bandwidth. The main performances are a very thin thickness (/spl lambda//100 at the lowest operating frequency), good impedance matching and right hand circularly polarized patterns over a 9:1 bandwidth.

Abstract

The development of a low profile, lightweight, broadband spiral antenna for airborne applications is described. The use of an electromagnetic band gap substrate with loads as reflector for an Archimedean spiral antenna is proposed. A method based on a transmission line model is presented to design this loaded electromagnetic band gap substrate. Simulation and measurements results demonstrate the applicability of the concept. A good impedance matching as well as a good circular polarisation are achieved over a 10:1 frequency bandwidth. Finally, thickness and weight of this new antenna are greatly reduced and their performances are better compared with a conventional spiral antenna with unidirectional beam.

Abstract

LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) is a proposed next-generation neutrino detector based on 50 kilotons of liquid scintillator. The low detection threshold, good energy resolution and excellent background rejection inherent to the liquid-scintillator detectors make LENA a versatile observatory for low-energy neutrinos from astrophysical and terrestrial sources. In the framework of the European LAGUNA-LBNO design study, LENA is also considered as far detector for a very-long baseline neutrino beam from CERN to Pyhasalmi ¨ (Finland). The present contribution gives an overview LENA’s broad research program, highlighting the unique capabilities of liquid scintillator for the detection of low-energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources. In particular, it will focus on the precision measurement of the solar neutrino spectrum: The search for time modulations in the 7Be neutrino flux, the determination of the electron neutrino survival probability in the low-energy region of the 8B spectrum and the favorable detection conditions for neutrinos from the CNO fusion cycle. peerReviewed

Abstract

In order to extend the performance of radar absorbing materials, it is necessary to design new structures with wideband properties and large angles of incidence which are also as thin as possible. The objective of this work, realized within the framework of the SAFAS project (self-complementary surface with low signature) is, then, the development of an ultra-wideband microwave absorber of low thickness. The design of such material requires a multilayered structure composed with dielectric layers, metasurfaces, and wide-angle impedance matching layers. This solution has been realized with on-the-shelf materials, and measured to validate the concept. At normal incidence, the bandwidth ratio, defined for a magnitude of the reflection coefficient below -10 dB, is 4.7:1 for an absorber with a total thickness of 11.5 mm, which corresponds to λ/7 at the lowest operating frequency. For an incidence of 60°, this bandwidth ratio is reduced to 3.8:1, but the device remains ultra-wideband.

Abstract

We report on the observation of two neutrino-induced events which have an estimated deposited energy in the IceCube detector of 1.04±0.16 and 1.14±0.17 PeV, respectively, the highest neutrino energies observed so far. These events are consistent with fully contained particle showers induced by neutral-current ν(e,μ,τ) (ν(e,μ,τ)) or charged-current ν(e) (ν(e)) interactions within the IceCube detector. The events were discovered in a search for ultrahigh energy neutrinos using data corresponding to 615.9 days effective live time. The expected number of atmospheric background is 0.082±0.004(stat)(-0.057)(+0.041)(syst). The probability of observing two or more candidate events under the atmospheric background-only hypothesis is 2.9×10(-3) (2.8σ) taking into account the uncertainty on the expected number of background events. These two events could be a first indication of an astrophysical neutrino flux; the moderate significance, however, does not permit a definitive conclusion at this time.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the atmospheric electron neutrino flux in the energy range between approximately 80 GeV and 6 TeV, using data recorded during the first year of operation of IceCube's DeepCore low-energy extension. Techniques to identify neutrinos interacting within the DeepCore volume and veto muons originating outside the detector are demonstrated. A sample of 1029 events is observed in 281 days of data, of which 496±66(stat)±88(syst) are estimated to be cascade events, including both electron neutrino and neutral current events. The rest of the sample includes residual backgrounds due to atmospheric muons and charged current interactions of atmospheric muon neutrinos. The flux of the atmospheric electron neutrinos is consistent with models of atmospheric neutrinos in this energy range. This constitutes the first observation of electron neutrinos and neutral current interactions in a very large volume neutrino telescope optimized for the TeV energy range.

Abstract

We have performed a search for muon neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the center of the Sun with the 79-string configuration of the IceCube neutrino telescope. For the first time, the DeepCore subarray is included in the analysis, lowering the energy threshold and extending the search to the austral summer. The 317 days of data collected between June 2010 and May 2011 are consistent with the expected background from atmospheric muons and neutrinos. Upper limits are set on the dark matter annihilation rate, with conversions to limits on spin-dependent and spin-independent scattering cross sections of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) on protons, for WIMP masses in the range 20-5000  GeV/c2. These are the most stringent spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross section limits to date above 35  GeV/c2 for most WIMP models.
