Abstract

Günümüzde toplumların yaşamış olduğu sosyo-kültürel, ekonomik ve salgınlara bağlı değişimler, insanların ihtiyaçlarını değiştirmektedir. Tarihi yapılar toplumların ekonomik, sosyal ve kültürel birikimleri ile inşa edildikleri dönemin kentsel ve mimari üslubunu yansıtmaktadır. Yapıların korunarak, yeni bir işlevle kullanılması ve gelecek nesillere aktarılması sosyo-kültürel sürdürülebilirlik açısından önemlidir. Lefkoşa-Suriçi kenti tarihi yapıların yoğun olarak bulunduğu alanlardan biridir. Bu alan içerisinde konumlanan birçok tarihi konut yapısı yeniden işlevlendirilerek kullanılmaktadır. Bu yapıların bir veya birkaçı bir araya getirilerek ve/veya yapılan yeni eklemelerle; butik otel, restoran, kafe… vb. gibi yeni işlevlere dönüşerek kentsel yaşama katılmaya başlamıştır. Buna bağlı olarak yeniden işlevlendirilerek kullanılan, No: 16 Celaliye Sokak’ta bulunan Nicosia Eagle Eye Butik otel çalışma kapsamına alınmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı yeniden işlevlendirilen tarihi bir konutun mimari, yapısal ve mekânsal özellikleri ele alınarak yeni işlevinde yapılan mekânsal dönüşümlerin (yerinde) analiz edilerek değerlendirilmesidir. Mekânsal dönüşüm analizleri sonucunda Nicosia Eagle Eye Butik Otel’in korunma, sosyo-kültürel sürdürülebilirlik, yeni işleve adaptasyon ve kent dokusuna olan katkıları ortaya çıkartılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, yapılmış ve yapılacak olan yeni işlev değişikliklerinin hem koruma hem de sürdürülebilirlik açısından daha verimli kullanılabilmesi için öneriler geliştirilmiştir.

Abstract

Mutfak, yaşamın devamlılığının sağlanması bakımından yiyeceklerin hazırlandığı, pişirildiği, servis ve depolanmasının yapıldığı mekândır. Mutfak mekânlarında kullanılan malzemeler, kullanıcı isteklerine, alışkanlıklarına, kültürel ve sosyo ekonomik durumlarına bağlı olarak değişmekte ve çeşitlilik göstermektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışmanın amacı, konut mutfaklarında kullanılan zemin, duvar ve mutfak mobilya malzemelerinin kullanıcı gözüyle değerlendirilmesidir. Çalışma iki aşamalı olup birinci aşama literatür taraması, ikinci aşama ise Kullanım Sonrası Değerlendirme Yöntemine (KSD) uygun olarak geliştirilen anket çalışmasıdır. Kuzey Kıbrıs, Lefke bölgesinde konumlanan tesadüfi yöntemle seçilmiş, farklı sosyo-ekonomik (Alt/Orta/Üst SED) düzeye sahip, elli konut kullanıcısına anket uygulanmış ve bulgular elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgularda ise, mutfak mekânlarında kullanıcıların tercih etmiş oldukları mutfak malzemeleri hakkındaki düşünce ve tercih sebepleri ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, günümüz mutfak tasarımcılarına, kullanıcı dostu mutfak mekânları tasarlayabilmeleri veya mevcut mutfakları kullanıcı dostu mutfaklara dönüştüre bilmeleri amacıyla, tasarım ve uygulama süreçlerinde katkı koyacaktır

Abstract

Turkish vernacular housing architecture is in danger of extinction. Original village patterns deteriorate due to new developments, which are discordant with existing settlements and social lifestyle. This paper claims to ensure the cultural continuity of Turkish vernacular housing architecture by adapting new residential designs to the existent environment with a parametric shape grammar method. Originally, vernacular house plans included the allocation of space around a hall: a Sofa. This study firstly exposes spatial organization and grammar rule sets according to the relation between the sofa and remaining spaces, secondly considers current physical problems and villagers’ contemporary living demands and finally creates design solutions coherent with the actual vernacular character by adapting a new design grammar to the existing design.

Abstract

We have measured the first and second moments of the hadronic mass-squared distribution in B -> X_c l nu, for P(lepton) > 1.5 GeV/c. We find = 0.251 +- 0.066 GeV^2, < (M_X^2 -)^2 > = 0.576 +- 0.170 GeV^4, where M_D[Bar] is the spin-averaged D meson mass. From that first moment and the first moment of the photon energy spectrum in b -> s gamma, we find the HQET parameter lambda_1 (MS[Bar], to order 1/M^3 and beta_0 alpha_s^2) to be -0.24 +- 0.11 GeV^2. Using these first moments and the B semileptonic width, and assuming parton-hadron duality, we obtain |V_cb| = 0.0404 +- 0.0013., Comment: 11 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS, submitted to PRL

Abstract

Using 4.8 fb$^{-1}$ of data taken with the CLEO II detector, the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^+\to\pi^0\ell^+\nu$ measured relative to the Cabibbo favored decay $D^+\to\bar{K^0}\ell^+\nu$ is found to be $0.046\pm 0.014\pm 0.017$. Using $V_{cs}$ and $V_{cd}$ from unitarity constraints, we determine $| f_+^{\pi}(0)/f_+^K(0)|^2=0.9\pm 0.3\pm 0.3$ We also present a 90% confidence level upper limit for the branching ratio of the decay $D^+ \to \eta e^+\nu_e$ relative to that for $D^+ \to \pi^0 e^+\nu_e$ of 1.5.

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, kentsel mekânların gelişme sürecinde çocukoyun alanlarının rolü incelenmiştir. Kentsel mekânların gelişim sürecinde çocukoyun alanlarının rolünün incelenmesi amacıyla K.K.T.C’nin hızlı gelişenbölgelerinden biri olan Yeni Kent Gönyeli seçilmiştir. Bu çerçevede, Yeni KentGönyeli bölgesinde bulunan çocuk oyun alanlarının gereksinimlere uygun alanlaradönüştürülebilmesi için kullanıcıların talepleri doğrultusunda yeni çözümönerileri üretilmesi hedeflenmiştir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, fiziksel analiz veKullanım Sonrası Değerlendirme Yöntemi (KSD) alan çalışmasında kullanılmıştır.Çalışma üç aşamalı olarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Birinciaşamada literatür taraması yapılmıştır. İkinci aşamada fiziksel analizler,çevresel bağlamda mekânların dünyadaki çocuk oyun alanları tasarım kriterlerinegöre incelenmiştir. Üçüncü aşamada ise Kullanım Sonrası Değerlendirme Yöntemine(KSD) uygun olarak geliştirilen anket çalışması, bu alanların kullanıcısı olançocukların mekânlar hakkındaki düşünce ve beklentilerini ortaya çıkarmak amacıylaçalışma alanında uygulanmış ve değerlendirilmiştir.Sonuç olarak, YeniKent Gönyeli bölgesinde konumlanan çocuk oyun alanlarının gelişim süreciiçerisinde yaşanabilir, kullanıcı dostu kentsel mekânlara dönüşebilmesiamacıyla çözüm önerileri geliştirilmiştir., In this study the role of children playgrounds indevelopment process of urban spaces is investigated. The research area, YeniKent Gönyeli region in TRNC is one of the important locations where urbandevelopment rate is considerably high which has been the main reason forchoosing this area as the case for this study. Within this context it has beenaimed to produce recommendations for new solution in order to transformexisting children playgrounds, in accordance with user demands in Yeni Kent Gönyeli, into livable playgrounds. Accordingly,physical analysis and modality, Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) method has beenused in the study area.The study has three phase’s literature survey,physical analysis & questionnaires and evaluations. The first phase wasfocused on literature studies. In the second phase dealt with the physicalanalysis within environmental context in order to evaluate existing playgroundson the basis of internationally accepted design criteria. In the third stage,in order to unveil the opinions and expectations of the children who are theusers of these grounds, based on POE method a questionnaire is prepared and a surveywas carried in the case area. Finally recommendations for solutions are made inorder to transform children playgrounds into livable and user friendly urbanspaces within development process of Yeni Kent Gönyeli.

11. Transmitted ion energy loss distributions to detect cluster formation in silicon

Abstract

The energy loss distribution of ions transmitted through a 5.7±0.2 μm thick Si crystal was measured and simulated with the Monte Carlo channeling simulation code FLUX . A general resemblance between the measured and simulated energy loss distributions was obtained after incorporation of an energy dependent energy loss in the simulation program. The energy loss calculations are used to investigate the feasibility to detect the presence of light element dopant clusters in a host crystal from the shape of the energy loss distribution, with transmission ion channeling. A curved crystal structure is used as a model for a region in the host crystal with clusters. The presence of the curvature does have a large influence on the transmitted energy distribution, which offers the possibility to determine the presence of dopant clusters in a host crystal with transmission ion channeling.

Abstract

Low energy ion implantation at high doses of boron (>1015 cm–2) in Si is necessary for the fabrication of ultrashallow junctions but can result in the undesirable presence of boron clusters. Values for the dimensions of the lattice distortions in the implanted Si are obtained by comparing the enhanced dechanneling and the direct scattering peak in the region with clusters in a channeled Rutherford backscattering spectrometry spectrum to those from Monte Carlo calculations on a curved crystal structure. Values of about 0.17 and 65 nm are found for the maximum deformation and the length of the distortions in the crystal, respectively, which implies that the lattice distortions extend significantly outside the layer in which the B clusters are supposed to be present. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract

We have measured axially channeled Rutherford backscattering spectra of Si1-xGex nanofilms in silicon(001). A step in the yield of the host crystal was found for off-normal axes at the depth of the nanofilm. The step was measured as a function of the angle between the incoming beam and the [011] axis and shows two maxima. It is found that Monte Carlo simulations assuming tetragonal distortion reproduce the experimental results. A universal curve was derived which enables determination of the tetragonal distortion from ion-channeling experiments, for a given film thickness. The results are compared with XRD measurements.

Abstract

Using 13.7 $fb^{-1}$ of data recorded by the CLEO detector at CESR, we report evidence for two new charmed baryons: one decaying into $\Xi_c^{0 \prime}\pi^+$ with the subsequent decay $\Xi_c^{0 \prime} \to \Xi_c^0 \gamma$, and its isospin partner decaying into $\Xi_c^{+ \prime} \pi^-$ followed by $\Xi_c^{+\prime} \to \Xi_c^+\gamma$. We measure the following mass differences for the two states: $M(\Xi_c^0 \gamma \pi^+)-M(\Xi_c^0)$=318.2+-1.3+-2.9 MeV, and $M(\Xi_c^+ \gamma \pi^-)-M(\Xi_c^+)$=324.0+-1.3+-3.0 MeV. We interpret these new states as the $J^P = 1/2^- \Xi_{c1}$ particles, the charmed-strange analogs of the $\Lambda_{c1}^+(2593)$.

Abstract

In a sample of $9.66\times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the CLEO detector we make the first observation of B decays to an $\eta_c$ and a kaon. We measure branching fractions $BR(B^+\to\eta_c K^+) = (0.69 + 0.26 - 0.21 +- 0.08 +- 0.20)\times 10^{-3}$ and $BR(B^0\to\eta_c K^0) = (1.09 + 0.55 - 0.42 +- 0.12 +- 0.31)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is from the $\eta_c$ branching fraction uncertainty. From these we extract the $\eta_c$ decay constant in the factorization approximation, $f_{\eta_c} = 335 +- 75$ MeV. We also search for B decays to a $\chi_{c0}$ and a kaon. No evidence for a signal is found and we set 90% CL upper limits: $BR(B^+\to\chi_{c0} K^+) < 4.8\times 10^{-4}$ and $BR(B^0\to\chi_{c0} K^0) < 5.0\times 10^{-4}$.

Abstract

Planar MeV ion-channeling measurements on 2.2 nm thick Si1-xGex nano-films buried in Si are presented. The presence of the nano-film leads to a step in the yield of the host crystal in a {0 1 1} planar channeled RBS spectrum. In previous work we showed that with the help of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations the step height in axial channeling measurements provides useful information on the tetragonal distortion in buried nano-films. Since the step height is larger for planar channeling measurements, we extend this method to planar channeling in the present work. The measurements show that the flux distribution of channeled ions is not in statistical equilibrium, but still oscillates at the depth of the buried films (about 280 nm), This is confirmed by simulations performed with the MC simulation code FLUX and a qualitative understanding is obtained for the observed phenomena. The accuracy of the calculated step height curves appears much more sensitive to the choice of ion-atom potential than those from axial channeling, which can be attributed to the non-equilibrium distribution of channeled ions between the planes. Consequently, from planar channeling measurements, the tetragonal distortion can be determined with about the same accuracy as from axial channeling measurements in spite of the higher steps. Abstract

We present a search for direct CP violation in B{sup {+-}}{yields}J/{psi}K{sup {+-}} and B{sup {+-}}{yields}{psi}(2S)K{sup {+-}} decays. In a sample of 9.7x10{sup 6} BB meson pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we have fully reconstructed 534 B{sup {+-}}{yields}J/{psi} K{sup {+-}} and 120 B{sup {+-}}{yields}{psi}(2 S)K{sup {+-}} decays with very low background. We have measured the CP -violating charge asymmetry to be [+1.8{+-}4.3(stat){+-}0. 4(syst)]% for B{sup {+-}}{yields}J/{psi}K{sup {+-}} and [+2.0{+-}9.1(stat){+-}1. 0(syst)]% for B{sup {+-}}{yields}{psi}(2S)K{sup {+-}} . Abstract

We have searched for the rare decays of the eta prime meson to e+ e- eta, e+ e- pizero, e+ e- gamma, and e mu in hadronic events at the CLEO II detector. The search is conducted on 4.80 fb^-1 of e+ e- collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find no signal in any of these modes, and set 90% confidence level upper limits on their branching fractions of 2.4 X 10^-3, 1.4 X 10^-3, 0.9 X 10^-3, and 4.7 X 10^-4, respectively. We also investigate the Dalitz plot of the common decay of the eta prime to pi+ pi- eta. We fit the matrix element with the Particle Data Group parameterization and find Re(alpha) = -0.021 +- 0.025, where alpha is a linear function of the kinetic energy of the eta.

Abstract

Strain in and around pyramidal InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QD’s) fabricated by molecular-beam-epitaxy influences the density of states of the confined charge carriers. The presence of strain in QD’s is required to explain their optical properties. In this paper MeV ion-channeling experiments are presented which provide evidence for the presence of strain in and around InAs QD’s in GaAs. The small dimensions of the QD’s (typical height 4 nm) and the presence of a wetting layer complicate the interpretation of channeling measurements, but our experiments show that extended strain fields around the QD’s induce ion steering which accounts for the observed channeling behavior.

Abstract

The decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been observed with the CLEOthinspthinspII detector. The K{sup {asterisk}{minus}} is reconstructed in two decay channels, K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{r_arrow}K{sub S}{pi}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow} {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} and K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup 0} . The {eta} is reconstructed from the decay {eta}{r_arrow}{gamma}{gamma} . The measured branching fraction is B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {asterisk}{minus}} {eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(2.9{plus_minus} 0.8{plus_minus}0.4){times}10{sup {minus}4} . We also measure the inclusive branching fractions without requiring the K{sup {asterisk}} resonance, B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sub S}{pi}{sup {minus}}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(1.10 {plus_minus}0.35{plus_minus}0.11){times}10{sup {minus}4} and B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup 0}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(1.77 {plus_minus}0.56{plus_minus}0.71){times}10{sup {minus}4} . The results indicate that the K{sup {asterisk}{minus}} resonance dominates the K{sub S}{pi}{sup {minus}} mass spectrum. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

We report the first observation of B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X transitions with high momentum {eta}{sup {prime}} mesons. We observe 39.0{plus_minus}11.6 B decay events with 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c , the high momentum region where background from b{r_arrow}c processes is suppressed. We discuss the physical interpretation of the signal, including the possibility that it is due to b{r_arrow}sg{sup {asterisk}} transitions. Given that interpretation, we find B(B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X{sub s} )=[6.2{plus_minus}1.6(stat){plus_minus} 1.3(syst){sup +0.0}{sub {minus}1.5} (bkg)]{times}10{sup {minus}4} for 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c . {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society }

Abstract

We have studied semileptonic B meson decays with a p-wave charm meson in the final state using 3.29×10^6 BB events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring. We find a value for the exclusive semileptonic product branching fraction B(B^-→D_1^0l^-ν _l)B(D_1^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (0.373±0.085±0.052±0.024)% and an upper limit for B(B^-→D_2^(*0)l^-ν_l)B(D_2^(*0)→D^(*+)π^-)

Abstract

Using 3.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at the $\Upsilon$(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, corresponding to 3.3 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, we have searched for the color-suppressed $B$ hadronic decay processes: $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 (D^{*0}) X^0$, where $X^0$ is a light neutral meson $\pi^0$, $\rho^0$, $\eta$, $\eta'$ or $\omega$. No obvious signal is observed. We set 90 % C.L. upper limits on these modes, varying from $1.2 \times 10^{-4}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^0$ to $1.9 \times 10^{-3}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*0} \eta'$.

Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report new measurements of the branching fractions for the decays of the charmed baryon {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} into pK{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup 0}, p{bar K}{sup 0}, p{bar K}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, and p{bar K}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}, all measured relative to pK{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}. The relative branching fractions are 0.67{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.11,0.46{plus_minus}0.02{plus_minus}0.04,0.52 {plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.05, and 0.66{plus_minus}0.05{plus_minus}0.07, respectively. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

The decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup + }3{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been studied with the CLEOII detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The branching fraction is measured to be (2.85{plus_minus}0.56{plus_minus}0.51){times}10{sup {minus}4} . The result is in good agreement with the isospin expectation but somewhat below the conserved-vector-current prediction. We have searched for resonance substructure in the decay. Within the statistical precision, the decay is saturated by the channels {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0 }{omega}{nu}{sub {tau}} , 2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} , and {pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} . This is the first observation of this {omega} decay mode and the branching fraction is measured to be (1.89{sup +0.74}{sub {minus}0.67}{plus_minus}0.40) {times}10{sup {minus}4} . {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

We report new measurements of the differential and total branching ratios for inclusive B decay to D{sup 0}, D{sup +}, and D{sup *+} and the first measurement of the same quantities for inclusive B decay to D{sup *0}. Here B is the mixture of B{sub d} and B{sub u} from {Upsilon}(4S) decay. Furthermore, since more than one charm particle (or antiparticle) of the same kind can be produced in B decay, here {open_quotes}inclusive B branching ratio{close_quotes} is used to mean the average number of charm particles and their antiparticles of a certain species produced in B decay. We obtain the following results (the first error is statistical, the second systematic of this analysis, the third propagated from other measurements): B(B{r_arrow}D{sup 0}X)=(0.636{plus_minus}0.014{plus_minus}0.019{plus_minus}0.0 8), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup +}X)=(0.235{plus_minus}0.009{plus_minus}0.009{plus_minus}0.024), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *0}X) =(0.247{plus_minus}0.012{plus_minus}0.018{plus_minus}0.018), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *+}X)=(0.239{plus_minus}0.011{plus_minus}0.014{plus_minus}0. 09). The following ratio of branching ratios is not affected by most of the systematic errors: B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *0}X)/ B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *+}X)=(1.03{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.09{plus_minus}0.08). We also report the first measurement of the momentum-dependent D{sup *0} polarization and a new measurement of the D{sup *+} polarization in inclusive B decay. Abstract

The beauty to up quark coupling constant |V(ub)| can be extracted from B → ρ e+ ν(e) combined with the form factors for D → K* e+ ν(e) and B → V ℓ+ ℓ- and D → ρ e+ ν(e). Using the entire CLEO-c ψ(3770) → DD event sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 818 pb(-1) and approximately 5.4×10(6) DD events, we measure the form factors for the decays D0 → ρ- e+ ν(e) and D+ → ρ0 e+ ν(e) for the first time and the branching fractions with improved precision. A four-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit determines the form factor ratios to be V(0)/A1(0)=1.48±0.15±0.05 and A2(0)/A1(0)=0.83±0.11±0.04. Assuming Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity, the known D meson lifetimes, and our measured branching fractions we obtain the form factor normalizations A1(0), A2(0), and V(0). We also present a measurement of the branching fraction for D+ → ω e+ ν(e) with improved precision.

Abstract

We have observed two new decay modes of the charmed baryon $\Xi_c^+$ into $\Sigma^+ K^-\pi^+$ and $\Sigma^+ \bar{K}^{*0}$ using data collected with the CLEO II detector. We also present the first measurement of the branching fraction for the previously observed decay mode $\Xi_c^+\to\Lambda K^-\pi^+\pi^+$. The branching fractions for these three modes relative to $\Xi_c^+\to\Xi^-\pi^+\pi^+$ are measured to be $1.18 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.17$, $0.92 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.14$, and $0.58 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.07$, respectively.

Abstract

We have measured the weak decay asymmetry parameters ($\aLC $) for two \LC\ decay modes. Our measurements are $\aLC = -0.94^{+0.21+0.12}_{-0.06-0.06} $ for the decay mode $\Lambda_c^+ \to \Lambda\pi^+ $ and $\aLC = -0.45\pm 0.31 \pm 0.06$ for the decay mode $\Lambda_c \to \Sigma^+\pi^0 $. By combining these measurements with the previously measured decay rates, we have extracted the parity-violating and parity-conserving amplitudes. These amplitudes are used to test models of nonleptonic charmed baryon decay.

Abstract

We consider the decay of [Upsilon](1[ital S]) particles produced at CESR into a photon which is observed by the CLEO detector plus particles which are not seen. These could be real particles which fall outside of our acceptance, or particles which are noninteracting. We report the results of our search fo the process [Upsilon](1[ital S])[r arrow][gamma]+ unseen'' for photon energies [gt]1 GeV, obtaining limits for the case where unseen'' is either a single particle or a particle-antiparticle pair. Our upper limits represent the highest sensitivity measurements for such decays to date.

Abstract

We have studied the leptonic decay of the $\Upsilon (1S)$ resonance into tau pairs using the CLEO II detector. A clean sample of tau pair events is identified via events containing two charged particles where exactly one of the particles is an identified electron. We find $B(\Upsilon(1S) \to \tau^+ \tau^-) = (2.61~\pm~0.12~{+0.09\atop{-0.13}})%$. The result is consistent with expectations from lepton universality.

Abstract

We present a measurement of [Gamma]([ital D][sub [ital s]][sup +][r arrow][mu][sup +][nu])/[Gamma]([ital D][sub [ital s]][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +])= 0.245[plus minus]0.052[plus minus]0.074. Using this ratio and [ital scrB]([ital D][sub [ital s]][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +])=(3.7[plus minus]0.9)% we extract [ital f][sub [ital D][ital s]]=344[plus minus]37[plus minus]52[plus minus]42 MeV, where the last error is due to the uncertainty in the [ital D][sub [ital s]][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +] absolute branching ratio. This result is larger than most theoretical predictions.

Using the CLEO II detector at CESR, we have measured the ratio of branching fractions B (D + S → φl + ν) B (D + S → φπ + ) = 0.54 ± 0.05 ± 0.04 . We use this measurement to obtain a model dependent estimate of B (D + S → φπ + ) .

Abstract

Using 586 pb(-1) of e+ e- collision data at E(c.m.) = 4170 MeV, produced at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring collider and collected with the CLEO-c detector, we observe the process e+ e- → π+ π- h(c)(1P). We measure its cross section to be 15.6±2.3±1.9±3.0 pb, where the third error is due to the external uncertainty on the branching fraction of ψ(2S) → π0 h(c)(1P), which we use for normalization. We also find evidence for e+ e- → ηh(c)(1P) at 4170 MeV at the 3σ level and see hints of a rise in the e+ e- → π+ π- h(c)(1P) cross section at 4260 MeV.

Abstract

The decay [tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]] has been observed in [ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]] annihilation using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. In a data sample collected at [radical][ital s] [similar to]10.6 GeV, 668[plus minus]38 decay candidates have been identified by exclusively reconstructing two [pi][sup 0]'s accompanying three charged particles, which are assumed to be pions. Normalizing to the number of [tau] pairs detected with one charged particle recoiling against three charged particles, this yields a branching ratio of [ital B][sub 3[pi]2[pi]][sup 0]=(0.48[plus minus]0.04[plus minus]0.04)%. A signal of 430[plus minus]33 events for the decay [tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][pi][sup [minus]][omega][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]] has also been observed, corresponding to a branching ratio of [ital B][sub [pi][omega][pi]][sup 0]=(0.39[plus minus]0.04[plus minus]0.04)%.

Abstract

Edible insects have become a promising food source because they are rich in protein, fatty acids, minerals, among others. In recent years, edible insects have been proposed to be used as innovative functional ingredients in terms of biological activity. The present study aimed to determine and compare biological activities of the extracts and hydrolysates obtained from early- and adult-stage edible grasshoppers Sphenarium purpurascens to evaluate their potential as a source of bioactive compounds. Proximal analyses showed that in adult grasshoppers (AGs), the percentage of protein (48.9% ± 1.2), crude fat (13.1% ± 0.09), and chitin (15.6% ± 0.81) was significantly higher than early grasshoppers (EGs) (42.2% ± 0.55, 9.35% ± 0.08, and 10.5% ± 0.15, respectively). Total phenolic compounds, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•), and 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS•+) free radical scavenging were analyzed and reported. Enzymatic hydrolysis increased the concentration of total phenolic compounds and higher antioxidant capacity (up to 252.78 mM trolox). Once fractionated by ultrafiltration, the fraction that presented the highest antioxidant activity against DPPH• and ABTS•+ was that with molecules ≤ 10 kDa. Furthermore, the bioaccessibility of the samples was analyzed by in vitro protein digestion using a multienzymatic method, and a recovery index (RI) was reported. Extracts and hydrolysates were analyzed by UPLC-MS, and this allowed the identification of phenolic acids and flavonoids. The results obtained in this work suggest that the grasshopper can be used as a possible source of bioactive compounds that can be used in the food or pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the {ital D}{sup *+} and {ital D}{sup *0} decay branching fractions based on 780 pb{sup {minus}1} of data collected with the CLEO II detector. For radiative {ital D}{sup *+} decay, we obtain an upper limit, {ital scrB}({ital D}{sup *+}{r arrow}{ital D}{sup +}{gamma}){lt}4.2% (90% confidence level), which is substantially below previous results, and eliminates the need for an anomalously large charm quark magnetic moment.

Abstract

We have made measurements of several {ital D}{sub {ital s}} branching ratios, relative to the {phi}{pi}{sup +} mode. We have observed two previously unseen two-body hadronic decays of the {ital D}{sub {ital s}}{sup +}, namely {eta}{rho}{sup +} and {eta}{prime}{rho}{sup +}, and measured relative branching ratios of 2.86{plus minus}0.38{sub {minus}0.38}{sup +0.36} and 3.44{plus minus}0.62{sub {minus}0.46}{sup +0.44}, respectively. We have determined the relative branching ratio for the decay into {phi}{rho}{sup +} to be 1.86{plus minus}0.26{sub {minus}0.40}{sup +0.29}. In addition, we have measured relative branching ratios for the {eta}{pi}{sup +} and {eta}{prime}{pi}{sup +} states, for which there had previously been conflicting measurements; our results are 0.54{plus minus}0.09{plus minus}0.06 and 1.20{plus minus}0.15{plus minus}0.11, respectively. Combining these new measurements with previous results and using (3.7{plus minus}1.2)% for the value of {ital scrB}({ital D}{sub {ital s}}{r arrow}{phi}{pi}{sup +}), we can account for {approx}(79{plus minus}26)% of all {ital D}{sub {ital s}}{sup +} decays. In addition we have also measured relative branching ratios or set upper limits on {ital D}{sup +} decays to all of the above-mentioned final states.

CLEO has observed a signal corresponding to the previously unseen decay ξ c 0 →Ω − K + . The observation of this decay mod points to W-exchange diagrams being an important contributor to the decays of the ξc0.

Abstract

Using e{sup +}e{sup -} collision data taken with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have investigated the direct photon spectrum in the decay {psi}(2S){yields}{gamma}gg. We determine the ratio of the inclusive direct photon decay rate to that of the dominant three-gluon decay rate {psi}(2S){yields}ggg (R{sub {gamma}}{identical_to}{gamma}({gamma}gg)/{gamma}(ggg)) to be R{sub {gamma}}(z{sub {gamma}}>0.4)=0.070{+-}0.002{+-}0.019{+-}0.011, with z{sub {gamma}} defined as the scaled photon energy relative to the beam energy. The errors shown are statistical, systematic, and that due to the uncertainty in the input branching fractions used to extract the ratio, respectively.

Abstract

Using psi(2S)-->pi;{+}pi;{-}J/psi, J/psi-->gammaeta;{'} events acquired with the CLEO-c detector at the CESR e;{+}e;{-} collider, we make the first observations of the decays eta;{'}-->pi;{+}pi;{-}pi;{0} and eta;{'}-->pi;{+}pi;{-}e;{+}e;{-}, measuring absolute branching fractions (37_{-9};{+11}+/-4)x10;{-4} and (25_{-9};{+12}+/-5)x10;{-4}, respectively. For eta;{'}-->pi;{+}pi;{-}pi;{0}, this result probes the mechanism of isospin violation and the roles of pi;{0}/eta/eta;{'}-mixing and final state rescattering in strong decays. We also set upper limits on branching fractions for eta;{'} decays to pi;{+}pi;{-}micro;{+}micro;{-}, 2(pi;{+}pi;{-}), pi;{+}pi;{-}2pi;{0}, 2(pi;{+}pi;{-})pi;{0}, 3(pi;{+}pi;{-}), and invisible final states.

Abstract

CLEO has measured decay modes of the {ital D}{sup 0} and {ital D}{sup +} into final states consisting of {ital K}{sup {plus minus}}'s, {pi}{sup {plus minus}}'s, {ital K}{sup 0}'s and {ital {bar K}}{sup 0}'s, using data taken with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We report new results on the decays of {ital D}{sup 0}'s into 4{pi}{sup {plus minus}},{ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K+}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +},{ital {bar K}}{sup 0}{ital K+}{ital K{minus}},{ital {bar K}}{sup 0} {ital K+}{pi}{sup {minus}},{ital K}{sup 0}{ital K{minus}}{pi}{sup +},3{ital K}{sub {ital S}}{sup 0} and {ital {bar K}}{sup 0}{phi} together with some of their resonant substructure. We also present the first observation of the decay {ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}}{sup 0}{ital {bar K}0}{ital K+} and give limits on the doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the {ital D}{sup 0} into {ital K}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} and {ital K}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}.

Abstract

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have performed a direct measurement of the ratio of {ital D}{sup 0} semileptonic branching fractions into vector and pseudoscalar final states. We find {ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup *{minus}}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}})/{ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}})=0.51{plus minus} 0.18{plus minus}0.06, in agreement with the ratio derived by the E691 experiment which compares {ital D}{sup +} and {ital D}{sup 0} final states. We also set an upper limit on the ratio {ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}}{sup *0}{pi}{sup {minus}}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}})/{ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup *{minus}}{ital e}{nu}{sub {ital e}}){lt}0.64 at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Analyzing {upsilon}(nS) decays acquired with the CLEO detector operating at the CESR e{sup +}e{sup -} collider, we measure for the first time the product branching fractions B[{upsilon}(nS){yields}{gamma}{chi}{sub bJ}((n-1)P)]B[{chi}{sub bJ}(n-1)P){yields}X{sub i}] for n=2 and 3, where X{sub i} denotes, for each i, one of the 14 exclusive light-hadron final states for which we observe significant signals in both {chi}{sub bJ}(1P) and {chi}{sub bJ}(2P) decays. We also determine upper limits for the electric dipole (E1) transitions {upsilon}(3S){yields}{gamma}{chi}{sub bJ}(1P)

Abstract

We report the first observation of Y(2S) → ηY(1S), with a branching fraction Β = (2.1 +0.7 -0.6 (stat) ± 0.3(syst)) X 10 -4 and a statistical significance 5.3σ. Data were acquired with the CLEO III detector at the CESR e + e - symmetric collider. This is the first process observed involving a b-quark spin flip. For related transitions, 90% confidence limits in units of 10 -4 are Β(Y(2S) → π 0 Y(1S)) < 1.8, Β(Y(3S) → ηY(1S)) < 1.8, B(Y(3S) →π 0 Y(1S)) < 0.7, and Β(Y(3S) → π 0 Y(2S)) < 5.1.
