This study explored the views and experiences of teachers about their teaching of PhysicalEducation (PE) in the Intermediate Phase of primary schooling. The study was conducted amongeight purposively sampled Life Skills (LS) primary school teachers in the Thulamela municipality,Vhembe district, Limpopo province and the Gert Sibande district, Mpumalanga province of SouthAfrica. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with teachers from the selectedschools. Based on thematic data analysis, the main findings indicated that PE teachers from bothprovinces experienced challenges regarding large classes, inadequate facilities and a lack ofopportunities for professional development. These challenges negatively affected the quality of PEteaching and assessment procedures. The study concluded that these challenges were a direct resultof the marginalisation of the PE curriculum of and the disadvantages associated with schools inrural environments.

A field experiment was undertaken on farmers’ fields adjacent to a large mine tailings dam in the Zambian mining town of Kitwe. Experimental plots were located close to the tailings (≤ 200 m) or further away (300–400 m) within the demarcated land farmed by the same community. This study evaluated the uptake of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn by pumpkin leaves and maize grown in soil amended with lime and manure applied at agronomic rates, and the subsequent risk of dietary exposure to the local community, typical of many similar situations across the Zambian Copperbelt. Treatments, combinations of lime and manure (present or absent), were applied to subplots selected independently and randomly within each main plot, which represented variable geochemistry across this study site as a result of windblown/rain-driven dust from the tailings. Total elemental concentrations in crops were determined by ICP-MS following microwave-assisted acid digestion. Concentrations of Cu and Pb in pumpkin leaves were above the prescribed FAO/WHO safe limits by 60–205% and by 33–133%, respectively, while all five metals were below the limit for maize grain. Concentration of metals in maize grain was not affected by the amendments. However, lime at typical agronomic application rates significantly reduced concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the pumpkin leaves by 40%, 33%, 19% and 10%, respectively, and for manure Cd reduced by 16%, while Zn increased by 35%. The uptake of metals by crops in locations further from the tailings was greater than closer to the tailings because of greater retention of metals in the soil at higher soil pH closer to the tailings. Crops in season 2 had greater concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn than in season 1 due to diminished lime applied only in season 1, in line with common applications on a biannual basis. Maize as the staple crop is safe to grow in this area while pumpkin leaves as a readily available commonly consumed leafy vegetable may present a hazard due to accumulation of Cu and Pb above recommended safe limits.

This study presents an analysis of the effects of manure and lime commonly used to improve agricultural productivity and evaluates the potential for such soil amendments to mobilise/immobilise metal fractions in soils contaminated from nearby mine tailings in the Zambian Copperbelt. Lime and manure were applied at the onset of the study, and their effects were studied over two planting seasons, i.e. 2016-17 and 2017–18. Operationally defined plant-available Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the soil, were determined by extraction with DTPA-TEA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-triethanolamine) and 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2, before, and after, applying the amendments. In unamended soils, Cd was the most available and Ni the least. Lime application decreased extractable Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. The response to lime was greater in soils with an initially acidic pH than in those with approximately neutral pH values. Manure increased DTPA extractable Zn, but decreased DTPA and Ca(NO3)2 extractable Cd, Cu and Pb. Combined lime and manure amendment exhibited a greater reduction in DTPA extractable Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn, as well as for Ca(NO3)2 extractable Cd compared to separate applications of lime and manure. The amendments had a significant residual effect on most of the soil fractions between season 1 and 2. The results obtained in this study showed that soil amendment with minimal lime and manure whilst benefiting agricultural productivity, may significantly reduce the mobility or plant availability of metals from contaminated agricultural soils. AIMS: Hyperglycaemia, a side-effect of acute glucocorticoid exposure, is associated with poor outcome in those undergoing chemotherapy. The incidence, risk factors and diurnal profile of glucocorticoid-induced glucose dysregulation in the context of chemotherapy treatment remain incompletely understood.METHODS: Blinded continuous interstitial glucose monitoring was performed on 16 women without diabetes for 24 h prior to and 5 days following carboplatin/paclitaxel chemotherapy combined with dexamethasone treatment for gynaecological cancer. At the end of the treatment period, glucose data were analysed and integrated with baseline metabolic and anthropomorphic variables.RESULTS: Some 15/16 (94%) women exhibited elevated glucose levels (> 11.1 mmol/l). Peak glucose levels were highest on the day of treatment (median 14.45 mmol/l, range 10.2-22.2 mmol/l) and total time spent with an elevated interstitial glucose level was highly variable (median 3.6 h, range 0.0-55.1 h). Peak interstitial glucose levels occurred predominantly, but not exclusively, in the afternoon (13.00-15.00) and evening (19.00-22.00); however, elevated levels were noted throughout the 24-h period. Baseline HbA1c was independently associated with severity and duration of elevated glucose levels in a regression adjusted for baseline BMI.CONCLUSIONS: These data report for the first time that high glucose levels are encountered by nearly all women following this regimen, the severity and duration of which are independently associated with HbA1c . Summary A reconnaissance survey was undertaken on soil near mine tailings to investigate variation in the content of copper, chromium and uranium. A nested sampling design was used. The data showed significant relations between the content of copper and uranium in the soil and its organic matter content, and a significant spatial trend in uranium content with distance from the tailings. Soil pH was not significantly related to any of the metals. The variance components associated with different scales of the sample design had large confidence intervals, but it was possible to show that the random variation was spatially dependent for all spatial models, whether for variation around a constant mean, or with a mean given by a linear effect of organic matter or distance to the tailings. For copper, we showed that a fractal or multifractal random model, with equal variance components for scales in a logarithmic progression, could be rejected for the model of variation around the fixed mean. The inclusion of organic matter as an explanatory factor meant that the fractal model could no longer be rejected, suggesting that the effect of organic matter results in spatial variation that is not scale invariant. It was shown, taking uranium as a case study, that further spatially nested sampling to estimate scale-dependent variance components, or to test a non-fractal model with adequate power, would require in the order of 200–250 samples in total. Highlights Sampling was undertaken to investigate spatial variation of metal content in soil near mine tailings. Chromium and uranium were related to soil organic matter content; uranium showed a spatial trend. Spatial variation was scale dependent, variation of copper was not scale-invariant. Characterizing random spatial variation requires substantial sample effort.

The distribution of elemental species of chromium (Cr) in potentially-contaminated soil samples warrants investigation due to the differing mobilities and toxicities of trivalent [Cr(III)] and hexavalent chromium [(Cr(VI)]. In addition, the possibility of species interconversions requires the implementation of robust methods that can correct for changes at the point of sampling, extraction and analysis. This work presents the application of speciated isotope dilution mass spectrometry (SIDMS) to accurately quantify Cr(VI) in agricultural soils within close proximity to a mine tailings dam in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. Interpolated plots of total Cr, produced from data collected through a nested sampling design, were used to optimise the sampling across the spatial domain. Extraction of Cr(VI) was undertaken using a microwave assisted reaction system (80 °C for 5 min) with 50 mM EDTA, to complex Cr(III) and reduce the likelihood of oxidation during the extraction. Isotopically-enriched 53Cr(VI) was added to each sample prior to extraction to account for species interconversions. The accuracy of the method was confirmed using NIST SRM 2700 and 2701. Cr(VI) concentrations in the soil samples ranged between 0.03 and 0.29 mg kg−1, significantly lower than the residential UK screening value for Cr(VI) of 21 mg kg−1. The data indicate that this site poses a low environmental/human health risk with respect to Cr(VI) exposure.

Heavy metals are of environmental significance due to their effect on human health and the ecosystem. One of the major exposure pathways of Heavy metals for humans is through food crops. It is postulated in the literature that when crops are grown in soils which have excessive concentrations of heavy metals, they may absorb elevated levels of these elements thereby endangering consumers. However, due to land scarcity, especially in urban areas of Africa, potentially contaminated land around industrial dumps such as tailings is cultivated with food crops. The lack of regulation for land-usage on or near to mine tailings has not helped this situation. Moreover, most countries in tropical Africa have not defined guideline values for heavy metals in soils for various land uses, and even where such limits exist, they are based on total soil concentrations. However, the risk of uptake of heavy metals by crops or any soil organisms is determined by the bioavailable portion and not the total soil concentration. Therefore, defining bioavailable levels of heavy metals becomes very important in HM risk assessment, but methods used must be specific for particular soil types depending on the dominant sorption phases. Geochemical speciation modelling has proved to be a valuable tool in risk assessment of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Among the notable ones is WHAM (Windermere Humic Aqueous Model). But just like most other geochemical models, it was developed and adapted on temperate soils, and because major controlling variables in soils such as SOM, temperature, redox potential and mineralogy differ between temperate and tropical soils, its predictions on tropical soils may be poor. Validation and adaptation of such models for tropical soils are thus imperative before such they can be used. The latest versions (VI and VII) of WHAM are among the few that consider binding to all major binding phases. WHAM VI and VII are assemblages of three sub-models which describe binding to organic matter, (hydr)oxides of Fe, Al and Mn and clays. They predict free ion concentration, total dissolved ion concentration and organic and inorganic metal ion complexes, in soils, which are all important components for bioavailability and leaching to groundwater ways. Both WHAM VI and VII have been applied in a good number of soils studies with reported promising results. However, all these studies have been on temperate soils and have not been tried on any typical tropical soils. Nonetheless, since WHAM VII considers binding to all major binding phases, including those which are dominant in tropical soils, it would be a valuable tool in risk assessment of heavy metals in tropical soils. A discussion of the contamination of soils with heavy metals, their subsequent bioavailability to crops that are grown in these soils and the methods used to determine various bioavailable phases of heavy metals are presented in this review, with an emphasis on prospective modelling techniques for tropical soils.

An estimated variogram of a soil property can be used to support a rational choice of sampling intensity for geostatistical mapping. However, it is known that estimated variograms are subject to uncertainty. In this paper we address two practical questions. First, how can we make a decision on sampling intensity which is robust, given the uncertainty in the variogram? Second, what are the costs incurred in terms of oversampling because of uncertainty in the variogram model used to plan sampling? To achieve this we show how samples of the posterior distribution of variogram parameters, from a computational Bayesian analysis, can be used to characterize the effects of variogram parameter uncertainty on sampling decisions. We show how one can select a sample intensity so that a target value of the kriging variance is not exceeded with some specified probability. This will lead to oversampling, relative to the sampling intensity that would be specified if there were no uncertainty in the variogram parameters. One can estimate the magnitude of this oversampling by treating the tolerable grid spacing for the final sample as a random variable, given the target kriging variance and the posterior sample values. We illustrate these concepts with some data on total uranium content in a relatively sparse sample of soil from agricultural land near mine tailings in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia.

Background There is speculation that peripheral neuropathy (PN) with capecitabine and oxaliplatin (CapOx; 130 mg/m2, day 1, every 21 days) may be more common than with FOLFOX4 (5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin 85 mg/m2, day 1, every 14 days). We aimed to determine PN incidence and associations during CapOx, and 6 and 12 months after CapOx. Patients and methods Retrospective audit of 188 oxaliplatin-naive colorectal cancer patients (87 adjuvant, 101 palliative) who received at least one cycle of CapOx. Neurosensory Common Toxicity Criteria Adverse Events version 3 were applied. Results Overall, 94% experienced acute PN. Worst severities for adjuvant and palliative patients, respectively, were grade 1, 44% and 54%; grade 2, 35% and 32%; grade 3, 16% and 3%; grade 4, 0% and 1% and grade unclear 1% and 1%. Two patients developed PN after CapOx completion despite no symptoms during treatment. Chronic PN at 6 months affected 57% and 18% of adjuvant and palliative patients, respectively. At 12 months, 35% and 16% were affected. Chronic PN at 12 months was associated with cumulative oxaliplatin dose but not age, gender, acute myotonia, pseudolaryngospasm or grade 2 or more PN during treatment. Conclusion Incidence of acute PN during CapOx appears similar to FOLFOX4 but chronic PN in adjuvant patients may be more common with CapOx.

Background: Capecitabine is known to rarely cause raised serum triglycerides (TG). In our centre, several patients receiving capecitabine developed raised TG levels corresponding to the ‘very high risk' category for potentially serious acute pancreatitis. Methods: A fasting blood lipid screening protocol was introduced into clinical practice for patients receiving capecitabine. Patients with TGs >5 mmol l−1 were treated and followed up. An 18-month prospective audit was performed to establish the incidence and severity of capecitabine-induced hypertriglyceridaemia (CIHT). Results: A total of 304 patients received capecitabine for colorectal cancer between January 2008 and June 2009. Of these, 212 patients (70%) were screened and 8 (3.7%) developed clinically significant hypertriglyceridaemia requiring lipid-lowering therapy. Two of the eight patients had diabetes and one had pre-existing dyslipidaemia. One suffered cerebral infarction during chemotherapy. There were no cases of acute pancreatitis. Follow-up showed that serum TGs safely and rapidly returned to normal with appropriate treatment without discontinuation of capecitabine. Conclusions: This is the first prospective study evaluating CIHT. These results suggest that it should be classed as a ‘common' undesired effect of capecitabine. Despite this, the incidence does not justify routine screening in all patients. Targeted screening in those with diabetes or pre-existing hyperlipidaemia is recommended, together with adoption of a clear management policy.

A characteristic nystagmus profile of benign paroxysmal positional nystagmus (BPPN) was determined from analyses of horizontal and vertical electro-oculographic recordings in 8 patients. The vertical component was upbeat in both eyes (fast phase toward the ground in the head-hanging position) while the horizontal component was dissociated with the ipsilateral eye beating away from the down ear and the contralateral eye beating toward the down ear. The amplitude of the vertical component was larger in the contralateral eye while that of the horizontal component was larger in the ipsilateral eye. This dissociated nystagmus profile is consistent with a burst of excitatory activity originating in the posterior canal of the ear that is undermost at the end of the positioning maneuver.

The elemental composition of residues of maize (Zea mays), sorghum (S. bicolor), groundnuts (Arachis hypogea), soya beans (Glycine max), leucaena (L. leucocephala), gliricidia (G. sepium), and sesbania (S. sesban) was determined as a basis for examining their alkalinity when incorporated into an acidic Zambian Ferralsol. Potential (ash) alkalinity, available alkalinity by titration to pH 4 and soluble alkalinity (16 h water extract titrated to pH 4) were measured. Potential alkalinity ranged from 373 (maize) to 1336 (groundnuts) mmol kg−1 and was equivalent to the excess of their cation charge over inorganic anion charge. Available alkalinity was about half the potential alkalinity. Cations associated with organic anions are the source of alkalinity. About two thirds of the available alkalinity is soluble. Residue buffer curves were determined by titration with H2SO4 to pH 4. Soil buffer capacity measured by addition of NaOH was 12.9 mmol kg−1 pH−1. Soil and residue (10 g:0.25 g) were shaken in solution for 24 h and suspension pH values measured. Soil pH increased from 4.3 to between 4.6 (maize) and 5.2 (soyabean) and the amounts of acidity neutralized (calculated from the rise in pH and the soil buffer capacity) were between 3.9 and 11.5 mmol kg−1, respectively. The apparent base contributions by the residues (calculated from the buffer curves and the fall in pH) ranged between 105 and 350 mmol kg−1 of residue, equivalent to 2.6 and 8.8 mmol kg−1 of soil, respectively. Therefore, in contact with soil acidity, more alkalinity becomes available than when in contact with H2SO4 solution. Available alkalinity (to pH 4) would be more than adequate to supply that which reacts with soil but soluble alkalinity would not. It was concluded that soil Al is able to displace cations associated with organic anions in the residues which are not displaced by H+, or that residue decomposition may have begun in the soil suspension releasing some of the non-available alkalinity. Soil and four of the residues were incubated for 100 days and changes in pH, NH4+ and NO3− concentrations measured. An acidity budget equated neutralized soil acidity with residue alkalinity and base or acid produced by N transformations. Most of the potential alkalinity of soyabean and leucaena had reacted after 14 days, but this only occurred after 100 days for gliricidia, and for maize only the available alkalinity reacted. For gliricidia and leucaena, residue alkalinity was primarily used to react with acidity produced by nitrification. Thus, the ability of residues to ameliorate acidity depends not only on their available and potential alkalinity but also on their potential to release mineral N.

Aims: To characterize Gram-positive, catalase-negative, psychrotrophic, lactic acid-homofermentative, non-motile cocci isolated from vacuum-packaged refrigerated beef using phenotypic and genotypic methods. Methods and Results: A total of 89 strains was isolated at 2 and 6 weeks as one of the predominant microflora of five samples of vacuum-packaged beef stored at 2°C. The strains were compared with reference strains of some Gram-positive, catalase-negative cocci using SDS-PAGE whole-cell protein pattern analysis, biochemical characterization and 16S rDNA sequencing. The biochemical and physiological characteristics of the isolates resembled those of Lactococcus piscium GTC 552T. Numerical analysis of the SDS-PAGE whole-cell protein patterns resulted in close clustering of the strains with L. piscium GTC 552T (r > 0·68). Lactobacillus algidus sp. nov. is described on the basis of 40 strains isolated as one of the predominant bacteria from five specimens of vacuum-packaged beef collected from different meat shops and stored at 2 degrees C for 3 weeks. These strains were quite uniform in the overall characteristics examined. They are facultatively anaerobic, psychrophilic, Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile, lactic acid-homofermentative rods. The cells occurred singly and in pairs on agar media and in rather long chains in broth media. They differed in several cultural and biochemical characteristics from the authentic meso-diaminopimelic acid-positive or psychrophilic lactic acid bacteria in the genera Lactobacillus, Carnobacterium and Brochothrix. The SDS-PAGE whole-cell protein pattern was clearly distinctive. DNA-DNA hybridization and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA also failed to associate these strains closely with any of the validly described organisms used. The phylogenetic analysis showed that these strains are rather remotely but most closely related to Lactobacillus mali (93% sequence similarity), which belongs to the Lactobacillus casei/Pediococcus group. Therefore, these strains should be included in the genus Lactobacillus and considered to represent a new species, Lactobacillus algidus sp. nov. The type strain is M6A9T (= JCM 10491T).

Surveys were carried out in Zambia twice yearly from 1986 to 1990, to assess the impact of a biological control campaign against the cassava mealybug (CM), Phenacoccus manihoti Mat.-Ferr., throughout the infested area. From 1984 onward, the exotic parasitoid Epidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) (Hym., Encyrtidae) and some exotic coccinellid predators were released on 54 occasions along the spreading front of CM infestation. E. lopezi established in every release site, spread, and covered the entire infested area, but the exotic coccinellids did not establish. Between 1986 and 1990, CM populations declined on average 5.8 times. In a multiple regression analysis involving meteorological, agronomic, plant, and entomological variables, from a total of 4804 cassava fields, nine variables had a significant influence on the CM population density, which in turn was the main factor influencing tip damage scores. The duration of E. lopezi′s presence in an area was the most important factor: in the year the CM was recorded for the first time in a particular district, more than 20% of all cassava fields had an average of 10 or more CM/tip (a few having as many as 1000). This percentage was gradually reduced to 0% in Year 5. The condition of the plant, its age, rainfall, and water retention capacity of the soil were also important. Where CM populations were lower, damage by the cassava green mite, Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) (Acari, Tetranychidae), appeared more severe. The frequency of ants increased with the CM population density. In conclusion, biological control of the CM in Zambia was successful.

Plant residues offer a viable alternative to the costly and non-readily available commercial lime in addressing the constraint of soil acidity among the rural smallholders. The liming potential of the residues, attributable to excess cations over inorganic anions, exists in either available or non-available forms. This study investigates cation flux and its effect on pH and plant residue alkalinity of four plant residues, maize (Zea mays), soya beans (Glycine max), Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) and Gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium), upon incubation for 100 days with and without application of lime in an acidic Zambian Ferralsol. Initial characterization of base cation content ranged from 239 to 879 (Ca2+), 188 to 458 (Mg2+) and 298 to 477 mmolc kg–1 plant material (K+). Of these, 26–60, 62–92 and 76–96% in that order were water soluble. On incubation, up to 70% Ca2+ and at least 80% Mg2+ and K+ added in the residues were initially present eventually increasing to 84 and 95%, respectively. Potential alkalinity values were 373 (maize), 1264 (soya beans), 794 (Leucaena) and 1024 (Gliricidia) mmolc kg–1. Of these, between 42 (Gliricidia) and 52% (Leucaena) constituted available alkalinity. Exchangeable aluminium was absent or appeared in insignificantly very low amounts towards the end of the incubation, while base cations were fixed. There was initial dependence of pH on both total cation concentration and residue alkalinity, but this relationship was later lost, suggesting incomplete activation of the non-available fraction of the potential alkalinity. Nitrogen mineralization affected both cation flux and residue alkalinity. This study highlights the importance of residues on amelioration of major cation deficiencies and aluminium phytotoxicity.

Synthetic biomaterials can be used as instructive biological milieus to guide cellular behaviour and function. To further realize this application, we synthesized a series of structurally similar hydrogels and tested their ability to modulate angiogenesis. Hydrogels were synthesized from poly(DTE-co-x% DT carbonate) crosslinked by y% poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Hydrogel desaminotyrosyl tyrosine (DT) contents (x%) ranged from 10-100%, and crosslink densities (y% PEG-crosslinker) ranged from 5-80%. The hydrogels were fashioned into porous scaffolds with highly interconnected macro- and micro-pore (>100 and 10 mm in diameter, respectively) architecture using poly(DTE-co-10%DT carbonate% crosslinked with 8% PEG. Under physiological conditions (in vitro), the hydrogels degraded into three major products: desaminotyrosyl-tyrosine ethyl ester (DTE), desaminotyrosyl tyrosine (DT), and poly(ethylene glycol)-di-DT-hydrazide (PEG-di-DT hydrazide). Increasing either DT content or crosslink density brought quickened degradation. Because DT and DTE, two of the three major degradation products, have not demonstrated any noticeable cytotoxicity or angiogenic effect in previous studies, we measured the cytotoxicity of PEG-di-DT hydrazide, the third major degradation product. We found that PEG-di-DT hydrazide only displayed significant cytotoxicity at the high concentration of 100 mg/mL. Interestingly, PEG-di-DT hydrazide and its further degradation product PEG-dihydrazide stimulated in vitro endothelial cell migration and tubulogenesis, which is comparable to results found with FGF-beta treatment. Subcutaneous implantation of the PEG-crosslinked poly(DTE-co-10%DT carbonate) scaffolds into the backs of rats elicited greater tissue growth over time and superior vascularization than poly(DTE carbonate) implantation. These results show that this new class of biomaterials has a strong potential to modulate angiogenesis.

Four strains of a hitherto unknown bacterium isolated from vacuum-packaged refrigerated beef were characterized by using phenotypic and phylogenetic methods. The novel strains were Gram-positive, catalase-negative, psychrophilic, rod-shaped bacteria with lactic acid-homofermentative mechanism. Comparative 16S rDNA gene sequencing demonstrated that the unknown strains represent a novel subline within the genus Lactobacillus, close to but distinct from Lactobacillus curvatus and Lactobacillus sakei. The unknown strains were readily distinguished from all currently described members of the genus Lactobacillus by biochemical properties and SDS-PAGE whole-cell protein profiles. Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, it is proposed that the unknown bacterium be classified as Lactobacillus fuchuensis sp. nov. The type strain is strain B5M10T (= JCM 11249T = DSM 14340T).

Five fresh beefcut samples were divided into 10 pieces, respectively, vacuum-packaged and stored at 2 degrees C for up to 6 weeks. The average pH values of five pieces from five beef samples were 5.62 +/- 0.04 at the start of storage and 5.12 +/- 0.07 after 6 weeks of storage. The pieces were homogenized, diluted and cultivated at weekly intervals on glucose-blood-liver (BL), de Man Rogosa and Sharpe (MRS) and trypticase soya (TS) agars at 7 degrees C for 10-14 days. From plates with 30-300 colonies, or the highest number if below 30, 15 colonies were randomly picked from each of the three media used for each beef sample. Based on morphologies, SDS-PAGE whole-cell protein profiles and physio-chemical characteristics, a total of 1493 strains isolated were identified as Brochothrix thermosphacta (64), Carnobacterium divergens (79), Carnobacterium piscicola (27), Lactobacillus algidus (637), Lactobacillus sp. (4), Lactococcus piscium (270), Leuconostoc gelidum (375), Acinetobacter (3), Aeromonas (1), Bacillus (10), Corynebacterium (3), Enterobacteriaceae (1), Pseudomonas (13) or Psychrobacter (6). A wider range of organisms was isolated from TS (13 organisms) and BL (7) agars than from MRS agar (3). Leuc. gelidum, Lc. piscium and L. algidas increased in numbers during the first 3 weeks of storage from about 5 x 10(3) cfu/g to the level of about 10(8) cfu/g and persisted at this level thereafter. C. divergens and C. piscicola were inconsistently detected, but seemed to persist at the relatively low level of about 5 x 10(7) cfu/g during the last 3 weeks of storage. B. thermosphacta increased to the level of about 7 x 10(5) cfu/g during the first 2 weeks of storage, but was not detected thereafter. Remaining organisms were detected sporadically at levels of

The vertical vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was tested in 13 patients with benign paroxysmal positional nystagmus and in ten normal subjects. Patients and normal subjects were rotated in the sagittal plane and in the plane of the vertical semicircular canal pairs using sine and step stimuli. Gain, phase, and time-constant measurements of the vertical components of induced nystagmus were not significantly different (P greater than normal 0.05) in the normal subjects and patients for any test condition. At least for the range of test stimuli used in this study, the dynamics of the vertical VOR were normal in patients with benign paroxysmal positional nystagmus.

Our standard rotational test battery includes tests of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), and visual-vestibular interaction. Lesions of the peripheral vestibular system characteristically impair only the VOR, whereas lesions of the central system impair OKN and visual-vestibular interaction. The pattern of abnormal responses can help localize lesions within the central vestibular pathways.

A characteristic nystagmus profile of benign paroxysmal positional nystagmus was determined from analyses of horizontal and vertical electro-oculographic recordings in 32 patients. The vertical component was upbeat in both eyes (fast phase toward the ground in the head-hanging position), whereas the horizontal component was dissociated with the ipsilateral eye beating away from the down ear and the contralateral eye beating toward the down ear. The amplitude of the vertical component was larger in the ipsilateral eye. This dissociated nystagmus profile is consistent with a burst of excitatory activity originating in the posterior canal of the ear that is undermost at the end of the positioning maneuver.

Smooth pursuit and other eye movements were quantitatively studied in patients with chronic schizophrenia to characterize the pattern and severity of eye movement abnormalities in this disorder. Twenty-one patients with schizophrenia, 13 patients with other psychiatric disorders (manic-depressive psychosis, schizoaffective disorder, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder), and 19 normal subjects were studied. Horizontal eye movements were recorded with DC electro-oculography and analyzed by an online computer system. Eye velocity and closed-loop gain of pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), vestibulo-ocular response (VOR) and visual-vestibular interactions were calculated. The latency, accuracy and peak velocity-amplitude relationships of voluntary saccades were measured. The group mean gains of pursuit and OKN of the schizophrenic patients were significantly lower than those of the normal subjects. Suppression of the VOR by fixation was impaired, and the latency of saccades was prolonged. However, the differences in group mean values were small in magnitude, and the frequencies of outliers among the schizophrenic patients were low. The patients with other psychiatric disorders had a similar pattern and severity of eye movement abnormalities. The frequency and severity of eye movement abnormalities in schizophrenic patients are lower than those indicated by previous studies that used different techniques of analysis.

• The visually controlled eye tracking systems (saccadic, smooth pursuit, and optokinetic) were compared in 25 young and middle-aged normal subjects (mean age, 42 years), 14 elderly patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) (mean age, 67 years) and 14 elderly normal subjects (mean age, 65 years). The young normal subjects were consistently superior to both elderly groups on all measurements, but there was no significant difference between the performance of patients with VBI and the elderly normal subjects. This study emphasizes the critical importance of taking age into consideration when evaluating saccades, smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus.
