Southern corn leaf blight (SCLB) is one of the most important corn leaf diseases. Appropriate management strategies and the use of resistant cultivars allow disease control. Therefore, knowing the aspects related to the pathogen and the response of hosts makes it possible to design efficient strategies for selecting genotypes resistant to this disease. In this sense, the objective was to carry out the Bipolaris maydis isolate characterization, evaluating the pathogenicity in different popcorn lines and the symptoms generated in the host after inoculation. The isolate characterization consisted of the macromorphological evaluation of the colonies and the micromorphological evaluation of the conidia in the PDA medium. An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse to evaluate the pathogenicity of the isolate, using 20 inbred lines of popcorn in a randomized block design with four replicates. Inoculation was carried out by spraying leaves, with a suspension containing 1.0 x 104 conidia.ml-1 of the CF/UENF 501 isolate of B. maydis. An incidence assessment and three assessments of disease symptom severity were performed, with seven days intervals between evaluations. The morphological characterization data of the isolate were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and for disease severity, the linear regression model was applied the first-degree model. The variance analysis was performed for the linear and angular coefficients obtained for each treatment. When a difference was found, the Scott-Knott clustering algorithm at 5% significance was applied. The isolate had gray-green colonies, a cottony appearance, and an irregular shape. The lines L353, L354, and L624 show more resistance at the beginning and throughout the evaluations. The high virulence of the CF/UENF 501 isolate made it possible to differentiate the lines in terms of disease intensity and the pattern of symptoms presented. Resumo Mancha-de-Bipolaris é uma das mais importantes doenças foliares do milho. Estratégias de manejo adequadas e o uso de cultivar resistente permitem o controle da doença, mas para tanto, conhecer os aspectos associados ao patógeno e a resposta do hospedeiro é necessário para traçar estratégias eficientes para seleção de genótipos resistentes a essa doença. Neste sentido, objetivou-se realizar a caracterização do isolado de Bipolaris maydis avaliando a patogenicidade em diferentes linhagens de milho-pipoca e os sintomas gerados no hospedeiro a partir da inoculação. A caracterização do isolado consistiu na avaliação macromorfológica das colônias e micromofológica dos conídios em meio nutritivo BDA. Para avaliação da patogenicidade do isolado foi conduzido um experimento em casa de vegetação utilizando 20 linhagens endogâmicas de milho-pipoca, com delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. A inoculação foi realizada por meio de pulverização em folhas, com uma suspensão contendo 1,0 x 104 conídios.ml-1 do isolado CF/UENF 501 de B. maydis. Foi realizada uma avaliação de incidência e três avaliações de severidade dos sintomas da doença, com o intervalo de sete dias para cada avaliação. Os dados da caracterização morfológica do isolado foram analisados por meio da estatística descritiva e para severidade da doença foi aplicado o modelo de regressão linear de primeiro grau. Realizou-se a análise de variância para o coeficiente linear e angular obtido para cada tratamento e quando constatada diferença aplicou-se o agrupamento de médias de Scott-knott a 5% de significância. O isolado apresentou colônias com coloração cinza esverdeado, aspecto algodonoso e forma irregular. As linhagens L353 e L354 e L624 estão entre as linhagens que apresentaram maior resistência no inicio e ao longo das avaliações. A elevada virulência do isolado CF/UENF 501 possibilitou diferenciar as linhagens quanto a intensidade da doença, bem como o padrão dos sintomas apresentados.

Aims Loss of cell-to-cell communication results in local conduction disorders and directional heterogeneity (LDH) in conduction velocity (CV) vectors, which may be unmasked by premature atrial contractions (PACs). We quantified LDH and examined differences between sinus rhythm (SR) and spontaneous PACs in patients with and without atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods and results Intra-operative epicardial mapping of the right and left atrium (RA, LA), Bachmann’s bundle (BB) and pulmonary vein area (PVA) was performed in 228 patients (54 with AF). Conduction velocity vectors were computed at each electrode using discrete velocity vectors. Directions and magnitudes of individual vectors were compared with surrounding vectors to identify LDH. Five hundred and three PACs [2 (1–3) per patient; prematurity index of 45 ± 12%] were included. During SR, most LDH were found at BB and LA [11.9 (8.3–14.9) % and 11.3 (8.0–15.2) %] and CV was lowest at BB [83.5 (72.4–94.3) cm/s, all P < 0.05]. Compared with SR, the largest increase in LDH during PAC was found at BB and PVA [+13.0 (7.7, 18.3) % and +12.5 (10.8, 14.2) %, P < 0.001]; CV decreased particularly at BB, PVA and LA [−10.0 (−13.2, −6.9) cm/s, −9.3 (−12.5, −6.2) cm/s and −9.1 (−11.7, −6.6) cm/s, P < 0.001]. Comparing patients with and without AF, more LDH were found during SR in AF patients at PVA and BB, although the increase in LDH during PACs was similar for all sites. Conclusion Local directional heterogeneity is a novel methodology to quantify local heterogeneity in CV as a possible indicator of electropathology. Intra-operative high-resolution mapping indeed revealed that LDH increased during PACs particularly at BB and PVA. Also, patients with AF already have more LDH during SR, which becomes more pronounced during PACs.

Exposure of tobacco workers handling dried tobacco leaves has been linked to an increased risk of toxicity and respiratory illness due to the presence of nicotine and other chemicals. This study aimed to evaluate the DNA damage caused by the exposure of tobacco growers during the dry leaf classification process and the relation to cellular mechanisms. A total of 86 individuals participated in the study, divided into a group exposed to dry tobacco (n = 44) and a control group (n = 42). Genotoxicity was evaluated using the alkaline comet assay and lymphocyte micronucleus (MN) assay (CBMN-Cyt), and measurement of telomere length. The levels of oxidative and nitrosative stress were evaluated through the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive species, and nitric oxide levels, respectively. The inorganic elements were measured in the samples using particle-induced X-ray emission method. The combination of variables was demonstrated through principal component analysis and the interactions were expanded through systems biology. Comet assay, MN, death cells, thiobarbituric acid reactive species, and nitrosative stress showed a significant increase for all exposed groups in relation to the control. Telomere length showed a significant decrease for exposed women and total exposed group in relation to men and control groups, respectively. Bromine (Br) and rubidium (Rb) in the exposed group presented higher levels than control groups. Correlations between nitrate and apoptosis; Br and MN and necrosis; and Rb and telomeres; besides age and DNA damage and death cells were observed. The systems biology analysis demonstrated that tobacco elements can increase the nuclear translocation of NFKB dimers inducing HDAC2 expression, which, associated with BRCA1 protein, can potentially repress transcription of genes that promote DNA repair. Dry tobacco workers exposed to dry leaves and their different agents showed DNA damage by different mechanisms, including redox imbalance.

Introduction: Voiding diary (VD) is an important tool in the evaluation of children with voiding symptoms. Voiding frequency, maximal voided volume (MVV), average voided volume (AVV) and nocturnal volume (NV) can be extracted and are valuable in diagnosing and monitoring these disorders. Recently, ICCS has reduced the period of data recording on VD from 3 to 2 days. We hypothesized that one day voiding diary would be enough for guiding treatment. Materials and Methods: Children with overactive bladder (OAB) and primary monosymptomatic enuresis (PMNE) were oriented to fulfill a 3-day VD. Data obtained from VD were evaluated for the first day (1dVD), the first two days (2dVD), and all 3 days (3dVD) and compared according to the MVV, AVV, frequency, NV and expected bladder capacity (EBC). The Friedman, Student's t test and the Fisher's exact was used. ANOVA was used for multiple comparisons. We also used Pearson correlation test. Results: Ninety-eight children were included, 59 had PMNE and 30 OAB. Frequency, AVV and VN were similar regardless how many days the voiding episodes were recorded. Only MVV was higher by a mean of only 32 mL on 3dVD compared to 1dVD. A 1dVD has a sensitivity of 93,9% and a positive likelihood ratio of 2.2. As for the correlation of MVV and EBC it was observed that in 83% of children, MVV was lower than EBC. MVV corresponds to 67% and 69% of EBC in children with PMNE and OAB, respectively. Conclusion: We believe that 1dVD is sufficient to assess these children. It has a high sensitivity and good correlation to 3dVD in evaluating these children. Bladder capacity in this population, evaluated by maximum voided volume, was close to 68% of that obtained by the EBC.

We fabricated all solution based In2O3 TFTs with AlOx–PVP and HfAlOx–PVP hybrid dielectric layers and observed the reduction of hysteresis by incorporation of HfOx into the pristine AlOx–PVP hybrid dielectric with enhanced electrical performance.

Aims The underlying mechanisms of atrial fibrillation (AF) are largely unknown. Inflammation may underlie atrial remodelling. Autoimmune diseases, related to increased systemic inflammation, may therefore be associated with new-onset AF. Methods and results Participants from the population-based UK Biobank were screened for rheumatic fever, gastrointestinal autoimmune diseases, autoimmune diseases targeting the musculoskeletal system and connective tissues, and neurological autoimmune diseases. Between 2006 and 2022, participants were followed for incident AF. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to quantify associations. 494 072 participants free from AF were included (median age 58.0 years, 54.8% women). After a median of 12.8 years, 27 194 (5.5%) participants were diagnosed with new-onset AF. Rheumatic fever without heart involvement (HR, 95% CI: 1.47, 1.26–1.72), Crohn’s disease (1.23, 1.05–1.45), ulcerative colitis (1.17, 1.06–1.31), rheumatoid arthritis (1.39, 1.28–1.51), polyarteritis nodosa (1.82, 1.04–3.09), systemic lupus erythematosus (1.82, 1.41–2.35), and systemic sclerosis (2.32, 1.57–3.44) were associated with a larger AF risk. In sex-stratified analyses, rheumatic fever without heart involvement, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, seropositive rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic and enteropathic arthropathies, systemic sclerosis and ankylosing spondylitis were associated with larger AF risk in women, whereas only men showed a larger AF risk associated with ulcerative colitis. Conclusions Various autoimmune diseases are associated with new-onset AF, more distinct in women. Our findings elaborate on the pathophysiological differences in autoimmunity and AF risk between men and women.

Recent studies have evaluated the association between uric acid (UA) and muscle mass in older adults; however, little is known about this relationship in young and middle-aged individuals. Our aim was to investigate whether serum UA is associated with appendicular muscle mass index (AMMI) in young and middle-aged individuals. We also aimed to evaluate whether this association is sex-specific.A cross-sectional study was performed with young and middle-aged individuals aged from 20 to 59 years from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012. A total of 2255 individuals (1440 young and 815 middle-aged individuals; 1167 men and 1088 women) were evaluated. Body composition was assessed by Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and AMMI was calculated using the arms plus legs lean mass divided by the height squared. UA levels were measured by colorimetric method. Regression analyzes were performed to evaluate whether AMMI is associated with the tertiles of UA levels after adjustments for potential confounders.In the unadjusted analyzes, serum UA was positively associated with AMMI for total sample, young, and middle-aged individuals of both sexes. However, after adjustments for confounders, UA levels were no longer associated with AMMI independent of the age-rage and sex.Serum UA is not associated with AMMI in young or middle-aged individuals independent of the sex.

AimsDespite general awareness that screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) could reduce health hazards, large-scale implementation is lagging behind technological developments. As the successful implementation of a screening programme remains challenging, this study aims to identify facilitating and inhibiting factors from healthcare providers’ perspectives.Methods and resultsA mixed-methods approach was used to gather data among practice nurses in primary care in the southern region of the Netherlands to evaluate the implementation of an ongoing single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG)-based AF screening programme. Potential facilitating and inhibiting factors were evaluated using online questionnaires (N = 74/75%) and 14 (of 24) semi-structured in-depth interviews (58.3%). All analyses were performed using SPSS 26.0. In total, 16 682 screenings were performed on an eligible population of 64 000, and 100 new AF cases were detected. Facilitating factors included ‘receiving clear instructions’ (mean ± SD; 4.12 ± 1.05), ‘easy use of the ECG-based device’ (4.58 ± 0.68), and ‘patient satisfaction’ (4.22 ± 0.65). Inhibiting factors were ‘time availability’ (3.20 ± 1.10), ‘insufficient feedback to the practice nurse’ (2.15 ± 0.89), ‘absence of coordination’ (54%), and the ‘lack of fitting policy’ (32%).ConclusionLarge-scale regional implementation of an AF screening programme in primary care resulted in a low participation of all eligible patients. Based on the perceived barriers by healthcare providers, future AF screening programmes should create preconditions to fit the intervention into daily routines, appointing an overall project lead and a General Practitioner (GP) as a coordinator within every GP practice.
