1. The 3‐Week‐Long Transport History and Deep Tropical Origin of the 2021 Extreme Heat Wave in the Pacific Northwest

Abstract

Abstract The heat wave in late June of 2021 (PNW21) set new temperature records in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). In Lytton the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada was measured. Several studies have already explored this extreme event in detail, however, here we compare the atmospheric air mass transport and heating processes associated with this heat wave with the 34 other most extreme heat events in the same region during the period 1960–2021, using a long backtracking time of 25 days. We found significant differences in the heat waves. During PNW21 most of the air was coming from the Philippine Sea, with more than 40% of the air located south of 15°N, and anomalous advection of sensible and latent heat from the Tropics was the dominant cause of PNW21. The latent heat was efficiently converted into sensible heat by precipitation, which was unique, as most other extremes experienced net diabatic cooling.

2. Impact of ion irradiation and film deposition on optical and fuel retention properties of Mo polycrystalline and single crystal mirrors

Abstract

Polycrystalline (PC) and single crystal (SC) molybdenum mirrors were irradiated with 98Mo+, 1H+, 4He+, 11B+ and 184W+. Energies were chosen to impact the optically active region (up to 30 nm deep) of Mo mirrors. Some surfaces were coated by magnetron sputtering either with B or W films 4–65 nm thick. The overall objective was to simulate the neutron-induced damage and transmutation (H, He), and the impact of H, He, B, W on the optical performance of test mirrors, and on fuel retention. In parallel, a set of PC Mo mirrors irradiated with 1.6 MeV 98Mo3+ to a damage of 2 dpa and 20 dpa was installed in the JET tokamak for exposure during deuterium-tritium campaigns. Data from spectrophotometric, ion beam and microscopy techniques reveal: (i) the irradiation decreased specular reflectivity, whereby the differences between PC and SC in reflectivity are very small, (ii) He is retained in bubbles within 25–30 nm of the subsurface layer in all irradiated materials, (iii) W, either deposited or implanted, decreases reflectivity, but the strongest reflectivity degradation is caused by B deposition. Laboratory studies show the correlation of damage and H retention. Several cycles of W deposition and its removal from SC-Mo mirrors by plasma-assisted methods were also performed.

Abstract

The modification of sputter-deposited films from EUROFER97 on tungsten during and after annealing were investigated in-situ and ex-situ. The annealing resulted in a densification of the film, formation of large grains, segregation of W at the surface, and the formation of Fe-W compounds at the interfacial region. Similar structural modifications were observed also for a film annealed on a MgO substrate, with an exception to the change in composition (no increase of W concentration). Results indicate that the substrate significantly affects thermally induced modifications of re-deposited EUROFER97.

Abstract

Beryllium samples from the JET ITER-like wall limiter tiles with either co-deposits or surface cracks caused by melt damage, were immersed into boiling water for 4 h 15 min to simulate and assess the impact of coolant water ingress into a tokamak on the state of Be components. Microscopy of the water-treated surfaces and the lack of residue in the water revealed that no thermomechanical damage (cracking or exfoliation) occurred to the samples during the exposure. Ion beam analysis showed no measurable release of deuterium from the samples. Combined ion beam analysis and Raman spectroscopy indicated only some degree of surface oxidation, but no thick oxide films were formed.

Abstract

Experiments on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) in 2021 and 2022 have addressed a number of critical issues for ITER and EU DEMO. A major objective of the AUG programme is to shed light on the underlying physics of confinement, stability, and plasma exhaust in order to allow reliable extrapolation of results obtained on present day machines to these reactor-grade devices. Concerning pedestal physics, the mitigation of edge localised modes (ELMs) using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) was found to be consistent with a reduction of the linear peeling-ballooning stability threshold due to the helical deformation of the plasma. Conversely, ELM suppression by RMPs is ascribed to an increased pedestal transport that keeps the plasma away from this boundary. Candidates for this increased transport are locally enhanced turbulence and a locked magnetic island in the pedestal. The enhanced D-alpha (EDA) and quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regimes have been established as promising ELM-free scenarios. Here, the pressure gradient at the foot of the H-mode pedestal is reduced by a quasi-coherent mode, consistent with violation of the high-n ballooning mode stability limit there. This is suggestive that the EDA and QCE regimes have a common underlying physics origin. In the area of transport physics, full radius models for both L- and H-modes have been developed. These models predict energy confinement in AUG better than the commonly used global scaling laws, representing a large step towards the goal of predictive capability. A new momentum transport analysis framework has been developed that provides access to the intrinsic torque in the plasma core. In the field of exhaust, the X-Point Radiator (XPR), a cold and dense plasma region on closed flux surfaces close to the X-point, was described by an analytical model that provides an understanding of its formation as well as its stability, i.e., the conditions under which it transitions into a deleterious MARFE with the potential to result in a disruptive termination. With the XPR close to the divertor target, a new detached divertor concept, the compact radiative divertor, was developed. Here, the exhaust power is radiated before reaching the target, allowing close proximity of the X-point to the target. No limitations by the shallow field line angle due to the large flux expansion were observed, and sufficient compression of neutral density was demonstrated. With respect to the pumping of non-recycling impurities, the divertor enrichment was found to mainly depend on the ionisation energy of the impurity under consideration. In the area of MHD physics, analysis of the hot plasma core motion in sawtooth crashes showed good agreement with nonlinear 2-fluid simulations. This indicates that the fast reconnection observed in these events is adequately described including the pressure gradient and the electron inertia in the parallel Ohm’s law. Concerning disruption physics, a shattered pellet injection system was installed in collaboration with the ITER International Organisation. Thanks to the ability to vary the shard size distribution independently of the injection velocity, as well as its impurity admixture, it was possible to tailor the current quench rate, which is an important requirement for future large devices such as ITER. Progress was also made modelling the force reduction of VDEs induced by massive gas injection on AUG. The H-mode density limit was characterised in terms of safe operational space with a newly developed active feedback control method that allowed the stability boundary to be probed several times within a single discharge without inducing a disruptive termination. Regarding integrated operation scenarios, the role of density peaking in the confinement of the ITER baseline scenario (high plasma current) was clarified. The usual energy confinement scaling ITER98( p,y ) does not capture this effect, but the more recent H20 scaling does, highlighting again the importance of developing adequate physics based models. Advanced tokamak scenarios, aiming at large non-inductive current fraction due to non-standard profiles of the safety factor in combination with high normalised plasma pressure were studied with a focus on their access conditions. A method to guide the approach of the targeted safety factor profiles was developed, and the conditions for achieving good confinement were clarified. Based on this, two types of advanced scenarios (‘hybrid’ and ‘elevated’ q -profile) were established on AUG and characterised concerning their plasma performance.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

The Joint European Torus (JET) fusion reactor was upgraded to the metallic wall configuration in 2011 which consisted of bulk beryllium (Be) tiles in the main chamber and bulk tungsten (W) and W-coated CFC tiles in the divertor (Matthews G.F. et al 2011 Phys. Scr. T148 014001). During each campaign, a series of wall damages were observed; on the upper dump plates (UDP) positioned to the top part of the vessel walls and on the inner wall—mainly affecting the inner wall guard limiters (IWGL). In both cases, it was concluded that the causes of these damages were unmitigated plasma disruptions. In the case of JET with the metallic wall configuration, most of these plasma disruptions were intentionally provoked. The overall objective was to study the behaviour of these phenomena, in order to assess their impact on the wall, improve understanding of morphological material changes, and—based on that—to develop, implement and test mitigation techniques for their prospective use on ITER. The current results bring additional information on the effects of the unmitigated plasma disruptions on the UDPs and are a significant extension of work presented in (Jepu et al 2019 Nucl. Fusion 59 086009) where the scale of the damage after three operational campaigns on the Be top limiters of JET was highlighted. In addition, new data is presented on the damaging effect that the high energetic runaway electrons had on the Be IWGL in JET.

Abstract

JET, the world’s largest operating tokamak with unique Be/W wall and tritium handling capability, completed a Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) campaign in 2021 (Maggi et al 29th Fusion Energy Conf. ) following a decade of preparatory experiments, dedicated enhancements, technical rehearsals and training (Horton et al 2016 Fusion Eng. Des. 109–111 925). Operation with tritium raises significant technical, safety and scientific challenges not encountered in standard protium or deuterium operation. This contribution describes the tritium operational requirements, pulses and technical preparations, new operating procedures, lessons learned and details on the achieved operational availability and performance. The preparation and execution of the recent JET tritium experiments benefitted from the previous experience in 1991 (Preliminary Tritium Experiment), 1997 (DTE1 campaign) and 2003 (Trace Tritium Campaigns) and consisted of the following five phases: technical rehearsals and scenario preparation, tritium commissioning, 100% tritium campaign, D-T campaign (DTE2), tritium clean-up. Following the clean-up JET resumed normal operation and is currently undertaking a further D-T campaign (DTE3).

Abstract

Sputter-deposited thin films (33–1160 nm) from EUROFER97 were obtained on different substrates (C, Si, W, MgO) in argon and a mix of argon and deuterium atmosphere. The composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the films were analyzed and compared to those of the bulk material. The films feature lower density (-10%), higher hardness (+79%), and smaller crystallites in comparison to the bulk. Despite such differences, the elemental atomic composition of the films and the bulk was very similar, as determined by ion beam analysis. Deposition in deuterium-containing atmosphere resulted in a low deuterium incorporation (0.28% of atomic content), indicating low retention of hydrogen-isotopes in the deposited material.

Abstract

This work was carried out to identify sources of errors, uncertainties and discrepancies in studies of fuel retention in wall components from the JET tokamak using methods based on thermal desorption. Parallel aims were to establish good practices in measurements and to unify procedures in data handling. A comprehensive program designed for deuterium quantification comprised the definition and preparation of two types of materials (samples of JET limiter Be tiles and deuterium-containing targets produced in the laboratory by magnetron-assisted deposition), their pre-characterization, quantitative analyses of the desorption products in three different thermal desorption spectroscopy systems and a detailed critical comparison of the results. Tritium levels were also determined by several techniques in samples from JET and in tritiated targets manufactured specifically for this research program. Facilities available for studies of Be- and tritium-contaminated materials from JET are presented. Apparatus development, future research options and challenges are discussed.

Divertor tiles after Joint European Torus-ITER like wall (JET-ILW) campaigns and dust collected after JET-C and JET-ILW operation were examined by a set of complementary techniques (full combustion and radiography) to determine the total, specific and areal tritium activities, poloidal tritium distribution in the divertor and the presence of that isotope in individual dust particles. In the divertor tiles, the majority of tritium is detected in the surface region and, the areal activities in the ILW divertor are in the 0.5–12 kBq cm ^−2 range. The activity in the ILW dust is associated mainly with the presence of carbon particles being a legacy from the JET-C operation. The total tritium activities show significant differences between the JET operation with ILW and the earlier phase with the carbon wall (JET-C) indicating that tritium retention has been significantly decreased in the operation with ILW.

Abstract

Tritium retention in the castellated structure of beryllium limiters used in JET with the ITER-like wall (ILW) during the first (ILW1), third (ILW3) and all three (ILW1-3) campaigns were examined and evaluated. Tritium was deposited on the surfaces inside the castellation grooves together with deuterium, beryllium, oxygen, carbon and small amounts of metallic impurities such as nickel, copper and tungsten. The tritium content after the ILW1 campaign was greater than after the ILW3 campaign. This is attributed to the steadily decreasing amount of carbon impurities in JET from campaign to campaign. The majority of tritium was retained in shallow regions in the grooves, up to 2 mm from the entrance to the gap. It was comparable on all sides of the castellation, i.e. no difference has been detected between the toroidal and poloidal gaps. Secondly, the tritium retention in the gaps was similar on all specimens independent of their position in the tokamak, while the retention on the plasma-facing surfaces clearly depended on the tile position. The tritium deposition patterns in the castellation were also compared with the deuterium distribution determined in earlier studies.

The First Mirror Test for ITER has been carried out in JET with mirrors exposed during: (i) the third ILW campaign (ILW-3, 2015–2016, 23.33 h plasma) and (ii) all three campaigns, i.e. ILW-1 to ILW-3: 2011–2016, 63,52 h in total. All mirrors from main chamber wall show no significant changes of the total reflectivity from the initial value and the diffuse reflectivity does not exceed 3% in the spectral range above 500 nm. The modified layer on surface has very small amount of impurities such as D, Be, C, N, O and Ni. All mirrors from the divertor (inner, outer, base under the bulk W tile) lost reflectivity by 20–80% due to the beryllium-rich deposition also containing D, C, N, O, Ni and W. In the inner divertor N reaches 5 × 1017 cm−2, W is up to 4.3 × 1017 cm−2, while the content of Ni is the greatest in the outer divertor: 3.8 × 1017 cm−2. Oxygen-18 used as the tracer in experiments at the end of ILW-3 has been detected at the level of 1.1 × 1016 cm−2. The thickness of deposited layer is in the range of 90 nm to 900 nm. The layer growth rate in the base (2.7 pm s − 1) and inner divertor is proportional to the exposure time when a single campaign and all three are compared. In a few cases, on mirrors located at the cassette mouth, flaking of deposits and erosion occurred. A tritium imaging plate technique (TIPT) in combination with an electron-probe microscopic analysis (EPMA) were applied to examine tritium (T) retention characteristics in individual dust particles collected in the Joint European Torus with the ITER-like Wall (JET-ILW) after the first campaign in 2011–2012.A lot of carbon (C)-dominated dust particles were found, which would be pre-existing carbon deposits in the JET-C or released carbon particles from the remaining carbon-fiber components in the JET-ILW. Most of T was retained at the surface of and/or in the C-dominated dust particles. The retention in tungsten, beryllium and other metal-dominated dust particles is relatively lower by a factor of 10–100 in comparison with that in the C-dominated particles. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Before decommissioning of the TEXTOR tokamak in 2013, the machine was conditioned with a comprehensive migration experiment where MoF6 and 15N2 were injected on the very last operation day. Thereafter, all plasma-facing components (PFCs) were available for extensive studies of both local and global migration of impurities – Mo, W, Inconel alloy constituents, 15 N, F – and fuel retention studies. Measurements were performed on 140 limiter tiles out of 864 throughout the whole machine to map global transport. One fifth of the introduced molybdenum could be found. Wherever possible, the findings are compared to results obtained previously in other machines. This review incorporates both published and unpublished results from this TEXTOR study and combines findings with analytical methods as well as modelling results from two codes, ERO and ASCOT. The main findings are: • Both local and global molybdenum transport can be explained by toroidal plasma flow and E⇀×B⇀ drift. The suggested transport scheme for molybdenum holds also for other analysed species, namely tungsten from previous experiments and medium-Z metals (Cr-Cu) introduced on various occasions. • Analytical interpretation of several deposition profile features is possible with basic geometrical and plasma physics considerations. These are deposition profiles on the collector probe, the lower part of the inner bumper limiter, the poloidal cross-section of the inner bumper limiter, and the poloidal limiter. • Any deposition pattern found in this TEXTOR study, including fuel retention, has neither poloidal nor toroidal symmetry, which is often assumed when determining deposition profiles on global scale. • Fuel retention is highly inhomogeneous due to local variation of plasma parameters – by auxiliary heating systems and impurity injection – and PFC temperature. • Local modelling with ERO yields good qualitative agreement but too high local deposition efficiency. • Global modelling with ASCOT shows that the radial electric field and source form have a high impact on global deposition patterns, while toroidal flow has little influence. Some of the experimental findings could be reproduced. Still, qualitative differences between simulated and experimental global deposition patterns remain.The review closes with lessons learnt during this extensive TEXTOR study which might be helpful for future scientific exploitation of other tokamaks to be decommissioned. Nondestructive analysis of tritium (T) distribution was performed by means of imaging plate technique on specimens cut from the Be limiters, W-coated carbon tiles and bulk W lamellae retrieved from the JET tokamak after the first and third experimental campaigns with the ITER-like wall. Afterwards, analyses were continued using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, microscopy techniques and thermal desorption spectroscopy. Co-deposits formed on the W-coated tiles in the 1st campaign showed large T retention because of high carbon content reaching up to 50 atomic %, while the carbon fraction in co-deposits after the 3rd campaign was distinctly lower. The T retention of the plasma-facing surface of the bulk W tile was smaller than that of the W-coated tiles by a factor of 20, while deposition of small amount of T was found at the side surfaces facing to the gaps in a lamella structure. The correlation of T distributions with surface morphology and the discharge conditions is discussed.

Abstract

Metallic mirrors will be essential components of all optical systems for plasma diagnosis in ITER. This contribution provides a comprehensive account on plasma impact on diagnostic mirrors in JET with the ITER-Like Wall. Specimens from the First Mirror Test and the lithium-beam diagnostic have been studied by spectrophotometry, ion beam analysis and electron microscopy. Test mirrors made of molybdenum were retrieved from the main chamber and the divertor after exposure to the 2013–2014 experimental campaign. In the main chamber, only mirrors located at the entrance of the carrier lost reflectivity (Be deposition), while those located deeper in the carrier were only slightly affected. The performance of mirrors in the JET divertor was strongly degraded by deposition of beryllium, tungsten and other species. Mirrors from the lithium-beam diagnostic have been studied for the first time. Gold coatings were severely damaged by intense arcing. As a consequence, material mixing of the gold layer with the stainless steel substrate occurred. Abstract

Tracer injection experiments in TEXTOR with MoF6 and WF6 lead to local deposition of about 6% for Mo and about 1% for W relative to the injected amount of Mo and W atoms. Modelling of these experiments has been done with ERO applying updated data for physical sputtering. The dissociation of the injected molecules has been treated in a simplified manner due to the lack of dissociation rate coefficients. However, with this it was possible to reproduce the observed radial penetration of Mo and W atoms into the plasma. The modelled local deposition efficiencies are about 50% for Mo and 60% for W assuming typical plasma parameters for the experimental conditions used. To reproduce the measured deposition efficiencies an enhancement factor for the erosion of deposited Mo and W has to be assumed (∼10 for Mo and ∼25 for W). Due to the rather low electron temperature Te of these plasma conditions (Te∼15eV at the location of injection), Mo and W are mostly sputtered by impurities whereas sputtering due to deuterium is negligible. A parameter study applying larger electron temperature leads to increased sputtering and thus to reduced local deposition efficiencies of about 30% for Mo and 5% for W. The work presented draws on new analysis of components removed following the second JET ITER-like wall campaign 2013–14 concentrating on the upper inner divertor, inner and outer divertor corners, lifetime issues relating to tungsten coatings on JET carbon fibre composite divertor tiles and dust/particulate generation. The results show that the upper inner divertor remains the region of highest deposition in the JET-ILW. Variations in plasma configurations between the first and second campaign have altered material migration to the corners of the inner and outer divertor. Net deposition is shown to be beneficial in the sense that it reduces W coating erosion, covers small areas of exposed carbon surfaces and even encapsulates particles. Post-mortem analyses of individual components provide relevant information on plasma-surface interactions like tungsten erosion, beryllium deposition and plasma fuel retention with divertor tiles via implantation or co-deposition. Ion Beam techniques are ideal tools for such purposes and have been extensively used for post-mortem analyses of selected tiles from JET following each campaign.In this contribution results from tiles removed from the JET ITER-Like Wall (JET-ILW) divertor following the 2013–2014 campaign are presented. The results summarize erosion, deposition and fuel retention along the poloidal cross section of the divertor surface and provide data for comparison with the first JET-ILW campaign, showing a similar pattern of material migration with the exception of Tile 6 where the strike point time on the tile was ∼ 4 times longer in 2013–2014 than in 2011–2012, which is likely to account for more material migration to this region. Abstract

Results are presented for the dust survey performed at JET after the second experimental campaign with the ITER-Like Wall: 2013–2014. Samples were collected on adhesive stickers from several different positions in the divertor both on the tiles and on the divertor carrier. Brittle dust-forming deposits on test mirrors from the inner divertor wall were also studied. Comprehensive characterization accomplished by a wide range of high-resolution microscopy techniques, including focused ion beam, has led to the identification of several classes of particles: (i) beryllium flakes originating either from the Be coatings from the inner wall cladding or Be-rich mixed co-deposits resulting from material migration; (ii) beryllium droplets and splashes; (iii) tungsten and nickel-rich (from Inconel) droplets; (iv) mixed material layers with a various content of small (8–200nm) W-Mo and Ni-based debris. A significant content of nitrogen from plasma edge cooling has been identified in all types of co-deposits. Abstract

MoF6 injection from a localised source into plasma edge in the TEXTOR tokamak was the last experiment before the final shut-down of the TEXTOR machine. During decommissioning all plasma-facing components (PFCs) became available for surface studies. Detailed mapping of Mo deposition was performed in order to determine its migration on global scale. The concentration of Mo on PFC decays exponentially with distance from the source. The decay length is of the order of 0.1m on the main PFC and 1m on the receded components. Also the decay lengths modelled with the ERO code are between 0.15–1.3m, depending on the anomalous cross-field diffusion coefficient. The inner bumper limiter is found to be the major repository for Mo. Material balance measurements show that only up to 22% of the injected Mo was detected on all the PFCs thus indicating that a large fraction of injected Mo may have been pumped out before being deposited. Abstract

An overview of diagnostic tools – test limiters and collector probes – used over the years for material migration studies in the TEXTOR tokamak is presented. Probe transfer systems are shown and their technical capabilities are described. This is accompanied by a brief presentation of selected results and conclusions from the research on material erosion – deposition processes including tests of candidate materials (e.g. W, Mo, carbon-based composites) for plasma-facing components in controlled fusion devices. The use of tracer techniques and methods for analysis of materials retrieved from the tokamak are summarized. The impact of research on the reactor wall technology is addressed.

Abstract

For the first time, material analysis techniques have been applied to study the effect of ion cyclotron wall conditioning (ICWC) on probe surfaces in a metal-wall machine. ICWC is a technique envisaged to contribute to the removal of fuel and impurities from the first wall of ITER. The objective of this work was to assess impurity migration under ICWC operation. Tungsten probes were exposed in ASDEX Upgrade to discharges in helium. After wall conditioning, the probes were covered with a co-deposited layer containing D, B, C, N, O and relatively high amount of He. The concentration ratio He/C+B was 0.7. The formation of the co-deposited layer indicates that a fraction of the impurities desorbed from the wall under ICWC operation are transported by plasma and deposited away from their original location. A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. 27. Extraction and Evaluation of Bioactive Compounds from Immature and Mature Corn Silk.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to assess the mineral content, bioactive compounds, α‐glucosidase inhibitory activity, and antioxidant of two‐maturity stages of corn silks, i.e., immature and mature with standard methods. Corn silks have been dried with sun and oven‐drying methods and extracted through methanol and water, two individual solvents. The results revealed that both corn silks were good sources of mineral content. The higher calcium (13.37 ± 0.06) and magnesium (890.00 ± 0.00) were found in the sun‐dried immature corn silk. The sun‐dried mature corn silk also exhibited a higher content of iron, zinc, and manganese. The results also revealed that all the extraction systems yielded significant amounts of TPC, TFC, β‐carotene, and anthocyanin content; ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activity; and α‐glucosidase inhibitory activity. Moreover, sun‐dried methanolic extracts exhibited the highest levels of TFC (127.58 ± 7.95 mg QE/100 g DM), β‐carotene (0.28 ± 0.00 mg/100 mL), TAC (42.53 ± 1.02 mg C3GE/kg DM), DPPH (75.65 ± 2.38%), and ABTS (94.22 ± 0.00%), showcasing their superior antioxidant potential. Conversely, oven‐dried methanolic extracts demonstrated a higher TPC of 20.82 ± 0.62 mg GAE/g DM, while water extracts showed maximum α‐glucosidase inhibitory activity of 76.19 ± 0.00%. Therefore, the obtained results demonstrated that sun‐dried methanolic extracts from corn silks might be a good source of therapeutic agents and natural ingredients for manufacturing food, feed, and pharmaceutical products. Abstract

The experimental angular distributions of differential cross-section (CS), vector analyzing power (iT11) and tensor analyzing powers (T20, T21 and T22 ) for the 12C(6Li, 6Li)12C elastic scattering at laboratory energy of 30 MeV are simultaneously analyzed in the structure of simple optical model (OM) using shallow Non-Monotonic (NM) and deep Monotonic Woods-Saxon (MWS) potentials. The Pauli-laden energy density functional (EDF) theory which results in NM potentials is also discussed. Equally good fits to the CS, T20, T21, and T22  data are obtained using both NM and MWS potentials. But  iT11data is only reproduced well using NM potentials in OM. The conclusion is that the shallow NM potentials seem better than the deep MWS for simultaneous description of the CS, iT11, T20, T21 and T22 data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study investigated the association between healthy eating behaviors and nutrition literacy in a sample of Bangladeshi adults. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 400 adults from two districts of Bangladesh (Dhaka and Chattogram). Data were generated by in-person interviews using a structured questionnaire. The Nutrition Literacy Scale and National Dietary Guidelines for Bangladesh were used to assess nutrition literacy and healthy eating behaviors, respectively. Multiple linear regression models were used to observe the association. The mean score for healthy eating behavior was 21.8 (SD = 4.8, Range: 5–33) on a scale of 34. A moderate positive correlation was found between nutrition literacy and healthy eating behavior of participants (r = 0.28, p < 0.001). The adjusted regression model showed that a 1 unit increase in nutrition literacy reflected an increase in the healthy eating behavior score of participants by 0.22 units (β = 0.223, p < 0.001). Findings showed an association between nutrition literacy and eating behaviors in Bangladeshi adults. Future research could be carried out to establish a causal relationship that may help inform the necessity of educational interventions for Bangladeshi adults to assist with meeting national nutrition-related targets.

Abstract

Zinc deficiency is a global public health problem in developing countries, including Bangladesh, where rice is the primary consumed staple food. To combat zinc deficiency in Bangladesh, BRRI dhan84 (paddy) has been released as a zinc-biofortified and high-yielding rice variety. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in physicochemical properties, nutritional attributes, and contents of zinc in newly released rice variety after parboiling and cooking using standard methods. Significant differences were noted among different properties. The study revealed that the parboiling method increased fat (2.36%), protein (9.42%), and zinc (2.741%), whereas those not using parboiling methods resulted in 1.72% fat, 6.68% protein and 2.732% zinc. In contrast, other components like fiber, carbohydrates, ash, and iron decreased after parboiling. Physicochemical analysis showed that parboiled rice was found to be slightly higher in length (6.507 mm), broader in width (2.032 mm), lower in solid gruel loss (0.090%), and also higher in head rice yield (80.09%) than non-parboiled rice. A prolonged cooking time of approximately 39.41 minutes was observed in parboiled rice as compared to non-parboiled rice. However, the cooking process negatively affected the nutrient contents of both parboiled and non-parboiled rice than uncooked or raw rice. Zinc content was generally similar between parboiled and non-parboiled rice after cooking (2.264-2.344 mg/100g). The sensory test further revealed that the parboiled rice obtained more overall acceptability, although the rice color was darker than that of non-parboiled rice. The study concluded that, depending on desired physicochemical and nutritional properties, the zincbiofortified BRRI dhan84 rice variety could be the important option for improving rice grain nutritional quality to overcome the micronutrient problem in Bangladesh. Abstract

Drying of high moisture paddy to achieve quality milled rice is an important issue in a paddy producing country like Bangladesh. This study has been conducted to investigate the impact of two stage drying technique namely, fluidized bed drying, tempering and followed by fixed bed drying method on quality of BRRI Dhan28 rice variety in terms of head rice yield (HRY). Moist paddy was dried in fluidized bed dryer (FBD) as first stage drying to reduce moisture from 25-27% to 18-19% using three drying temperatures of 120, 130, and 150°C at three bed thicknesses of 8, 10, and 12 cm. The first stage dried samples were immediately tempered for 30 minutes and dried in second stage drying by fixed bed dryer using 40±10C temperature maintaining bed thickness as 30 cm for the further reduction of moisture content to 13-14% (wb). Sun drying method was followed as complete drying of control sample. Control sample was used to compare the milling quality of rice dried in two stage drying technique. In addition, head rice yield was also compared to existing industrial paddy drying complexes. The results revealed that HRY of rice samples obtained from different drying methods was comparable. All the sets of drying parameters in two stage drying yielded better quality HRY than the control and even existing industrial drying method. The highest HRY (53.43%) of milled rice was obtained in the two-stage drying. On the other hand, the samples dried in the sun drying and industrial drying using Louisiana State University (LSU) dryer yielded 49.77% and 48.25% HRY, respectively. Therefore, the two-stage drying technique can be used for drying of high moisture paddy to obtain quality dried rice.

BackgroundPoverty and health illiteracy, combined with inappropriate systems to track disease and infection rates, contribute to children-and-mothers’ poor adherence to nutrient-rich foods intake in Bangladesh. Although risk factors for child and pregnant women malnutrition have been explored, the relationship between Bangladeshi adults’ nutrition literacy and their demographics and personal beliefs remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between adults’ nutrition literacy, demographics and personal beliefs in a large sample of Bangladeshi adults.MethodsFour hundred adults from two districts (Dhaka and Chattogram) of Bangladesh participated in a cross-sectional survey. Data were collected by interviews using a structured questionnaire containing the Nutrition Literacy Scale. Multiple linear regression models were employed to analyze associations between nutrition literacy and related factors.ResultsThe mean nutrition literacy score was 21.6 (SD: 3.7; range: 11–32) on a scale of 32. Multiple linear regression revealed that being a businessman (β = 1.66, p = 0.013) or private employee (β = 1.08, p = 0.030), having a higher family income (β = 1.17, p = 0.009), and a higher educational level were positively associated with higher nutrition literacy scores compared to their counterparts. Participants who had ever completed a nutrition-related course (β = 4.95, p < 0.001), and who perceived themselves as having a need for accessing nutrition-related information were positively associated with the higher nutrition literacy compared to their counterparts.ConclusionFindings from this study suggest the need for an integrated response plan involving educational interventions and accessible dietary plans targeting adult populations to enhance their nutritional literacy.

Abstract

An overview of recent results obtained at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is given. A work flow for predictive profile modelling of AUG discharges was established which is able to reproduce experimental H-mode plasma profiles based on engineering parameters only. In the plasma center, theoretical predictions on plasma current redistribution by a dynamo effect were confirmed experimentally. For core transport, the stabilizing effect of fast ion distributions on turbulent transport is shown to be important to explain the core isotope effect and improves the description of hollow low-Z impurity profiles. The L–H power threshold of hydrogen plasmas is not affected by small helium admixtures and it increases continuously from the deuterium to the hydrogen level when the hydrogen concentration is raised from 0 to 100%. One focus of recent campaigns was the search for a fusion relevant integrated plasma scenario without large edge localised modes (ELMs). Results from six different ELM-free confinement regimes are compared with respect to reactor relevance: ELM suppression by magnetic perturbation coils could be attributed to toroidally asymmetric turbulent fluctuations in the vicinity of the separatrix. Stable improved confinement mode plasma phases with a detached inner divertor were obtained using a feedback control of the plasma β. The enhanced Dα H-mode regime was extended to higher heating power by feedback controlled radiative cooling with argon. The quasi-coherent exhaust regime was developed into an integrated scenario at high heating power and energy confinement, with a detached divertor and without large ELMs. Small ELMs close to the separatrix lead to peeling-ballooning stability and quasi continuous power exhaust. Helium beam density fluctuation measurements confirm that transport close to the separatrix is important to achieve the different ELM-free regimes. Based on separatrix plasma parameters and interchange-drift-Alfvén turbulence, an analytic model was derived that reproduces the experimentally found important operational boundaries of the density limit and between L- and H-mode confinement. Feedback control for the X-point radiator (XPR) position was established as an important element for divertor detachment control. Stable and detached ELM-free phases with H-mode confinement quality were obtained when the XPR was moved 10 cm above the X-point. Investigations of the plasma in the future flexible snow-flake divertor of AUG by means of first SOLPS-ITER simulations with drifts activated predict beneficial detachment properties and the activation of an additional strike point by the drifts. Abstract

W7-X completed its plasma operation in hydrogen with island divertor and inertially cooled test divertor unit (TDU) made of graphite. A substantial set of plasma-facing components (PFCs), including in particular marker target elements, were extracted from the W7-X vessel and analysed post-mortem. The analysis provided key information about underlying plasma–surface interactions (PSI) processes, namely erosion, transport, and deposition as well as fuel retention in the graphite components. The net carbon (C) erosion and deposition distribution on the horizontal target (HT) and vertical target (VT) plates were quantified and related to the plasma time in standard divertor configuration with edge transform ι = 5/5, the dominant magnetic configuration of the two operational phases (OP) with TDU. The operation resulted in integrated high net C erosion rate of 2.8 mg s−1 in OP1.2B over 4809 plasma seconds. Boronisations reduced the net erosion on the HT by about a factor 5.4 with respect to OP1.2A owing to the suppression of oxygen (O). In the case of the VT, high peak net C erosion of 11 μm at the strike line was measured during OP1.2B which converts to 2.5 nm s−1 or 1.4 mg s−1 when related to the exposed area of the target plate and the operational time in standard divertor configuration. PSI modelling with ERO2.0 and WallDYN-3D is applied in an interpretative manner and reproduces the net C erosion and deposition pattern at the target plates determined by different post-mortem analysis techniques. This includes also the 13C tracer deposition from the last experiment of OP1.2B with local 13CH4 injection through a magnetic island in one half module. The experimental findings are used to predict the C erosion, transport, and deposition in the next campaigns aiming in long-pulse operation up to 1800 s and utilising the actively cooled carbon-fibre composite (CFC) divertor currently being installed. The CFC divertor has the same geometrical design as the TDU and extrapolation depends mainly on the applied plasma boundary. Extrapolation from campaign averaged information obtained in OP1.2B reveals a net erosion of 7.6 g per 1800 s for a typical W7-X attached divertor plasma in hydrogen.

Abstract

A sequence of fuel recovery methods was tested in JET, equipped with the ITER-like beryllium main chamber wall and tungsten divertor, to reduce the plasma deuterium concentration to less than 1% in preparation for operation with tritium. This was also a key activity with regard to refining the clean-up strategy to be implemented at the end of the 2nd DT campaign in JET (DTE2) and to assess the tools that are envisaged to mitigate the tritium inventory build-up in ITER. The sequence began with 4 days of main chamber baking at 320 °C, followed by a further 4 days in which Ion Cyclotron Wall Conditioning (ICWC) and Glow Discharge Conditioning (GDC) were applied with hydrogen fuelling, still at 320 °C, followed by more ICWC while the vessel cooled gradually from 320 °C to 225 °C on the 4th day. While baking alone is very efficient at recovering fuel from the main chamber, the ICWC and GDC sessions at 320 °C still removed slightly higher amounts of fuel than found previously in isotopic changeover experiments at 200 °C in JET. Finally, GDC and ICWC are found to have similar removal efficiency per unit of discharge energy. The baking week with ICWC and GDC was followed by plasma discharges to remove deposited fuel from the divertor. Raising the inner divertor strike point up to the uppermost accessible point allowed local heating of the surfaces to at least 800 °C for the duration of this discharge configuration (typically 18 s), according to infra-red thermography measurements. In laboratory thermal desorption measurements, maintaining this temperature level for several minutes depletes thick co-deposit samples of fuel. The fuel removal by 14 diverted plasma discharges is analysed, of which 9, for 160 s in total, with raised inner strike point. The initial D content in these discharges started at the low value of 3%–5%, due to the preceding baking and conditioning sequence, and reduced further to 1%, depending on the applied configuration, thus meeting the experimental target.

Abstract

The JET tokamak with the ITER-like wall is operated with arrays of castellated beryllium (Be) limiters in the main chamber. In several locations Be marker tiles were installed for erosion-deposition studies. The castellation sides and the plasma-facing surfaces (PFSs) of Be marker tiles from three different locations of the JET main chamber, from the experimental campaigns 2011–12 (ILW-1) and 2013–14 (ILW-2), were analysed, employing 2H and 3He micro-beams in order to determine carbon (C) impurity deposition and deuterium (D) retention. The deposited C and D amounts on the castellation sides (up to 1.5 mm deep into the groove) were assessed with respect to the ion/electron drift direction. Both the C and D amounts on the investigated castellation sides either stay constant or reduce with depth from the edge of the PFS. No systematic difference is observed in the C deposition or D retention on the different castellation sides of each sample with respect to the ion/electron drift direction. C and D content is found to be lower on the PFS than on surfaces in the gaps of castellation for the majority of the samples. The C amount is, in general, higher than the D one. No systematic correlation between the C and the D amounts has been observed.

Abstract

A high performance liquid chromatographic method (HPLC) equipped with photodiode array detector (PDA) has been used to determine the water-soluble vitamin B complex ( B1, B2, B3, and B6) in eleven selected vegetables of Bangladesh. The results showed varied levels of vitamin B-complexes. Precisely, Thankuni leaves showed the highest contents of vitamin B1; 0.19 mg/100 g, and vitamin B2; 0.25 mg/100g. Higher content of vitamin B3 (0.59 mg/100 g) were quantified in Coriander leaves, but absent in Jute leaves. On the other hand, the maximum quantified amount of B6 (0.73 mg/100 g) was detected in Carrot. In contrast, there was no detectable vitamin B6 in Jute, and Mint leaves and Cabbage. The findings of the current study may supplement the current Food Composition Table for Bangladesh (FCTB) by providing nutritional information of vitamin B complex in leafy and non-leafy vegetables which can also be used for calculating the habitual dietary intake and/or nutritional survey purposes.

Abstract

A tritium imaging plate technique (TIPT) in combination with an electron-probe microscopic analysis (EPMA) were applied to examine tritium (T) retention characteristics in individual dust particles collected in the Joint European Torus with the ITER-like Wall (JET-ILW) after the first campaign in 2011–2012.A lot of carbon (C)-dominated dust particles were found, which would be pre-existing carbon deposits in the JET-C or released carbon particles from the remaining carbon-fiber components in the JET-ILW. Most of T was retained at the surface of and/or in the C-dominated dust particles. The retention in tungsten, beryllium and other metal-dominated dust particles is relatively lower by a factor of 10–100 in comparison with that in the C-dominated particles.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impact of two options of two stage drying technique such as fluidized bed drying, tempering and followed by sun drying method and fluidized bed drying, tempering and followed by fixed bed drying method on quality of BRRI dhan28 rice variety in terms of head rice yield (HRY). Moist paddy was dried in fluidized bed dryer (FBD) as first stage drying to reduce moisture from 25%-27% to 18%-19% using drying temperatures of 120, 130, and 150°C at bed thicknesses of 8, 10, and 12 cm. The samples were immediately tempered and dried in second stage drying by fixed bed dryer using 40°C±1°C temperature maintaining bed thickness as 30 cm for the further reduction of moisture to 13%-14% (wb). Sun drying method was followed as second stage drying and for complete drying of control sample. In addition, HRY was also compared to existing industrial paddy drying complexes. The results revealed that HRY of rice samples obtained from different drying methods was comparable. The HRY obtained in the first option was better than the control and even existing industrial drying method. The highest HRY (65.57%) of milled rice was obtained in the first option and comparatively lower (53.43%) in the second option of two stage drying. On the other hand, the samples dried in the sun drying and industrial drying using Louisiana State University (LSU) dryer yielded 52.77% and 51.25% HRY, respectively. Therefore, the two stage drying technique can be used for drying of high moisture paddy to obtain quality dried rice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
