Abstract Ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are of interest in spintronics and superconducting spintronics. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be achieved in thin ferromagnetic multilayer structures, when the anisotropy is driven by carefully engineered interfaces. Devices with multiple interfaces are disadvantageous for our application in superconducting spintronics, where the current perpendicular to plane is affected by the interfaces. Robust intrinsic PMA can be achieved in certain Co $$_x$$ x Pt $$_{100-x}$$ 100 - x alloys and compounds at any thickness, without increasing the number of interfaces. Here, we grow equiatomic Co $$_{50}$$ 50 Pt $$_{50}$$ 50 and report a comprehensive study on the structural, magnetic, and spin-polarisation properties in the $$L1_1$$ L 1 1 and $$L1_0$$ L 1 0 ordered compounds. Primarily, interest in Co $$_{50}$$ 50 Pt $$_{50}$$ 50 has been in the $$L1_0$$ L 1 0 crystal structure, where layers of Pt and Co are stacked alternately in the [100] direction. There has been less work on $$L1_1$$ L 1 1 crystal structure, where the stacking is in the [111] direction. For the latter $$L1_1$$ L 1 1 crystal structure, we find magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the film plane. For the former $$L1_0$$ L 1 0 crystal structure, the magnetic anisotropy is perpendicular to the [100] plane, which is neither in-plane or out-of-plane in our samples. We obtain a value for the ballistic spin polarisation of the $$L1_1$$ L 1 1 and $$L1_0$$ L 1 0 Co $$_{50}$$ 50 Pt $$_{50}$$ 50 to be $$47\pm 3\%$$ 47 ± 3 % .

Artificial multiferroics consist of two types of ferroic materials, typically a ferroelectric and a ferromagnet, often coupled interfacially by magnetostriction induced by the lattice elongations in the ferroelectric. In BaTiO3, the magnitude of strain induced by these elongations is heavily temperature dependent, varying greatly between each of the polar crystal phases and exerting a huge influence over the properties of a coupled magnetic film. Here, we demonstrate that temperature and, thus, strain are effective means of controlling the magnetic anisotropy in BaTiO3(111)/CoFeB heterostructures. We investigate the three polar phases of BaTiO3: tetragonal (T) at room temperature, orthorhombic (O) below 280 K, and rhombohedral (R) below 190 K across a total range of 77–420 K. We find two distinct responses: a step-like change in the anisotropy across the low-temperature phase transitions and a sharp high-temperature reduction around the ferroelectric Curie temperature, measured from hard axis hysteresis loops. Using our measurements of this anisotropy strength, we are then able to show by micromagnetic simulation the behavior of all possible magnetic domain wall states and determine their scaling as a function of temperature. The most significant changes occur in the head-to-head domain wall states, with a maximum change of 210 nm predicted across the entire range, effectively doubling the size of the domain wall as compared to room temperature. Notably, similar changes are seen for both high and low temperatures, which suggests different routes for potential control of magnetic anisotropy and elastically pinned magnetic domain walls.

We report on x-ray and neutron scattering studies that reveal the structure of interfaces of C60 layers with adjacent transition metal layers, in this instance, Cu. Such interfaces produce room-temperature long-range spin order that is not described by conventional theories of metallic magnetism. We use a combination of hard x-ray reflectivity and neutron scattering to investigate the interfacial structure of two C60/Cu layered samples: a superlattice with multiple C60/Cu repeats and a simpler tri-layer structure. For both structures, we develop a consistent structural model for the two scattering techniques, which details the critical interfacial roughness between the layers. We find that while x-ray reflectivity provides a strong contrast between the C60 and Cu layers, the similar neutron scattering length density of the two materials severely reduces the neutron scattering contrast. Our results can be used to design material systems that permit studies of the magnetism of the C60/transition metal interfaces with spin-sensitive scattering probes such as polarized neutron reflectometry.

Teacher shortages represent a global challenge for educator preparation programs (EPPs) and the districts they serve. Using mixed methods approach to data collection and analysis, this paper presents the findings of the three cases involving the use of student data and partner voices to highlight the benefits of intentionally integrating the concepts of Improvement Sciences, Equitable Experiences, educator preparation learning communities, and the changemaker mindset in the design of initiatives for addressing local teacher shortages. Results provide a ground-up perspective on promising strategies for local EPPs and school districts seeking to create a sustainable pipeline of quality educators by focusing on expanding access, success, and mobility for non-traditional student teachers (teacher candidates).

Social-justice teacher education literature is widespread, but research highlighting the perspectives and insights from those who lead is far less common. This interview-based case-study of 20 deans from the Schools of Education across the United States addresses this gap and explores insights that pertain to the leadership and implementation of teacher education programs that advance social justice and teacher agency. Using conceptualisations of thin and strong equity, we identify, explain, and discuss three themes which emerged from the data. The first involves addressing barriers and access issues for prospective teacher candidates. The second includes programmatic actions taken by deans in attempts to further social justice goals and the third highlights an understanding that social justice work inevitably includes working to change systems and structures at the societal scale. We explore the extent to which these patterns reflect strong equity and provide ideas for deepening this work through the development and reframing of teacher agency.

Due to the increasingly stringent environmental regulations placed on the power generation industry, new methods of generating power utilising the abundant availability of coal are being developed. Included in this development is the Power Systems Development Facility's (PSDF) processes of applying pressurised combustion and gasification to increase efficiency while eliminating many of the environmentally unfriendly emissions. As with any combustion process, the measurement of oxygen in the flue gas is vitally important. The availability of the zirconium oxide in-situ oxygen analyser several years ago was a welcome change to those who had tried to maintain a real-time, accurate flue gas oxygen measurement. The zirconium oxide in-situ oxygen analyser is now the chosen method for measuring flue gas oxygen at virtually all power boiler outlets. During the detail design stages of the PSDF in the early 1990s, an in-situ oxygen analyser could not be found that would operate at the required combustor pressures of 150–300 psig. Recently, following numerous inquiries of various vendors around the world, a vendor was found who has developed a sensor that will act as a pressure boundary to 170 psig and an electronics unit that will accept a 4–20 mA input from a pressure transmitter for oxygen partial pressure compensation. This analyser has been successfully tested in the combustor outlet of the PSDF at a process pressure of 130 psig. The performance of the analyser is presented.

Abstract The majority of nucleated somatic cells can be reprogrammed to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The process of reprogramming involves epigenetic remodelling to turn on pluripotency-associated genes and turn off lineage-specific genes. Some evidence shows that iPSCs retain epigenetic marks of their cell of origin and this “epigenetic memory” influences their differentiation potential, with a preference towards their cell of origin. Here, we reprogrammed proximal tubule cells (PTC) and tail tip fibroblasts (TTF), from a reprogrammable mouse to iPSCs and differentiated the iPSCs to renal progenitors to understand if epigenetic memory plays a role in renal differentiation. This model allowed us to eliminate experimental variability due to donor genetic differences and transfection of the reprogramming factors such as copy number and integration site. In this study we demonstrated that early passage PTC iPSCs and TTF iPSCs expressed low levels of renal progenitor genes and high levels of pluripotency-associated genes, and the transcriptional levels of these genes were not significantly different between PTC iPSCs and TTF iPSCs. We used ChIP-seq of H3K4me3, H3K27me3, H3K36me3 and global DNA methylation profiles of PTC iPSCs and TTF iPSCs to demonstrate that global epigenetic marks were not different between the cells from the two different sets of tissue samples. There were also no epigenetic differences observed when kidney developmental genes and pluripotency-associated genes were closely examined. We did observe that during differentiation to renal progenitor cells the PTC iPSC-derived renal cells expressed higher levels of three renal progenitor genes compared to progenitors derived from TTF iPSCs but the underlying DNA methylation and histone methylation patterns did not suggest an epigenetic memory basis for this.

In fire emission models, the spatial resolution of both the modelling framework and the satellite data used to quantify burned area can have considerable impact on emission estimates. Consideration of this sensitivity is especially important in areas with heterogeneous land cover and fire regimes and when constraining model output with field measurements. We developed a global fire emissions model with a spatial resolution of 500 m using MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. To accommodate this spatial resolution, our model is based on a simplified version of the Global Fire Emissions Database (GFED) modelling framework. Tree mortality as a result of fire, i.e. fire-related forest loss, was modelled based on the overlap between 30 m forest loss data and MODIS burned area and active fire detections. Using this new 500 m model, we calculated global average carbon emissions from fire of 2.1±0.2 (±1σ interannual variability, IAV) Pg C yr−1 during 2002–2020. Fire-related forest loss accounted for 2.6±0.7 % (uncertainty range =1.9 %–3.3 %) of global burned area and 24±6 % (uncertainty range =16 %–31 %) of emissions, indicating that fuel consumption in forest fires is an order of magnitude higher than the global average. Emissions from the combustion of soil organic carbon (SOC) in the boreal region and tropical peatlands accounted for 13±4 % of global emissions. Our global fire emissions estimate was higher than the 1.5 Pg C yr−1 from GFED4 and similar to 2.1 Pg C yr−1 from GFED4s. Even though GFED4s included more burned area by accounting for small fires undetected by the MODIS burned area mapping algorithm, our emissions were similar to GFED4s due to higher average fuel consumption. The global difference in fuel consumption could mainly be explained by higher SOC emissions from the boreal region as constrained by additional measurements. The higher resolution of the 500 m model also contributed to the difference by improving the simulation of landscape heterogeneity and reducing the scale mismatch in comparing field measurements to model grid cell averages during model calibration. Furthermore, the fire-related forest loss algorithm introduced in our model led to more accurate and widespread estimation of high-fuel-consumption burned area. Recent advances in burned area detection at resolutions of 30 m and finer show a substantial amount of burned area that remains undetected with 500 m sensors, suggesting that global carbon emissions from fire are likely higher than our 500 m estimates. The ability to model fire emissions at 500 m resolution provides a framework for further improvements with the development of new satellite-based estimates of fuels, burned area, and fire behaviour, for use in the next generation of GFED.

The northern high latitude permafrost region has been an important contributor to the carbon sink since the 1980s. A new study finds that as tree cover increases, respiratory CO2 loss during late-growing season offsets photosynthetic CO2 uptake and leads to a slower rate of increasing annual net CO2 uptake.

Chronic tendinopathy represents a growing healthcare burden in the ageing global population. Curative therapies remain elusive as the mechanisms that underlie chronic inflammation in tendon disease remain unclear. Identifying and isolating key pathogenic and reparative cells is essential in developing precision therapies and implantable materials for improved tendon healing. Multiple discrete human tendon cell populations have been previously described ex vivo. To determine if these populations persist in vitro, healthy human hamstring tenocytes were cultured for 8 d on either tissue culture plastic or aligned electrospun fibres of absorbable polydioxanone. Novel single-cell surface proteomics combined with unbiased single-cell transcriptomics (CITE-Seq) was used to identify discrete tenocyte populations. 6 cell populations were found, 4 of which shared key gene expression determinants with ex vivo human cell clusters: PTX3_PAPPA, POSTN_SCX, DCN_LUM and ITGA7_NES. Surface proteomics found that PTX3_PAPPA cells were CD10+CD26+CD54+. ITGA7_NES cells were CD146+ and POSTN_SCX cells were CD90+CD95+CD10+. Culture on the aligned electrospun fibres favoured 3 cell subtypes (DCN_LUM, POSTN_SCX and PTX3_ PAPPA), promoting high expression of tendon-matrix-associated genes and upregulating gene sets enriched for TNF-a and IL-6/STAT3 signalling. Discrete human tendon cell subpopulations persisted in in vitro culture and could be recognised by specific gene and surface-protein signatures. Aligned polydioxanone fibres promoted the survival of 3 clusters, including pro-inflammatory PTX3-expressing CD10+CD26+CD54+ cells found in chronic tendon disease. These results improved the understanding of preferred culture conditions for different tenocyte subpopulations and informed the development of in vitro models of tendon disease.

In mountain headwater streams, the quality and resilience of summer cold-water habitat is generally regulated by stream discharge, longitudinal stream channel connectivity and groundwater exchange. These critical hydrologic processes are thought to be influenced by the stream corridor bedrock contact depth (sediment thickness), a parameter often inferred from sparse hillslope borehole information, piezometer refusal and remotely sensed data. To investigate how local bedrock depth might control summer stream temperature and channel disconnection (dewatering) patterns, we measured stream corridor bedrock depth by collecting and interpreting 191 passive seismic datasets along eight headwater streams in Shenandoah National Park (Virginia, USA). In addition, we used multi-year stream temperature and streamflow records to calculate several baseflow-related metrics along and among the study streams. Finally, comprehensive visual surveys of stream channel dewatering were conducted in 2016, 2019 and 2021 during summer low flow conditions (124 total km of stream length). We found that measured bedrock depths along the study streams were not well-characterized by soils maps or an existing global-scale geologic dataset where the latter overpredicted measured depths by 12.2 m (mean) or approximately four times the average bedrock depth of 2.9 m. Half of the eight study stream corridors had an average bedrock depth of less than 2 m. Of the eight study streams, Staunton River had the deepest average bedrock depth (3.4 m), the coldest summer temperature profiles and substantially higher summer baseflow indices compared to the other study steams. Staunton River also exhibited paired air and water annual temperature signals suggesting deeper groundwater influence, and the stream channel did not dewater in lower sections during any baseflow survey. In contrast, Paine Run and Piney River did show pronounced, patchy channel dewatering, with Paine Run having dozens of discrete dry channel sections ranging from 1 to greater than 300 m in length. Stream dewatering patterns were apparently influenced by a combination of discrete deep bedrock (20+ m) features and more subtle sediment thickness variation (1–4 m) depending on local stream valley hydrogeology. In combination, these unique datasets show the first large-scale empirical support for existing conceptual models of headwater stream disconnection based on spatially variable underflow capacity and shallow groundwater supply.

Rheum tanguticum is one of the primary rhubarb species used for food and medicinal purposes, and it has recently been gaining more attention and recognition. This research represents the first attempt to use stable isotopes and elemental analysis via IRMS to identify the geographical origin of Rheum tanguticum. A grand total of 190 rhubarb samples were gathered from 38 locations spread throughout the provinces of Gansu, Sichuan, and Qinghai in China. The carbon content showed a decreasing trend in the order of Qinghai, followed by Sichuan, and then Gansu. Nitrogen content was notably higher, with Qinghai and Sichuan displaying similar levels, while Gansu had the lowest nitrogen levels. Significant differences were noted in the δ13C (−28.9 to −26.5‰), δ15N (2.6 to 5.6‰), δ2H (−120.0 to −89.3‰), and δ18O (16.0‰ to 18.8‰) isotopes among the various rhubarb cultivation areas. A significant negative correlation was found between %C and both longitude and humidity. Additionally, δ13C and δ15N isotopes were negatively correlated with longitude, and δ15N showed a negative correlation with humidity as well. δ2H and δ18O isotopes exhibited a strong positive correlation with latitude, while significant negative correlations were observed between δ2H and δ18O isotopes and temperature, precipitation, and humidity. The LDA, PLS-DA, and k-NN models all exhibited strong classification performance in both the training and validation sets, achieving accuracy rates between 82.1% and 91.7%. The combination of stable isotopes, elemental analysis, and chemometrics provides a reliable and efficient discriminant model for accurately determining the geographical origin of R. tanguticum in different regions.
