1. Shell-model study of octupole collectivity near ^{208}Pb

Abstract

We show that the collectivity of the particle-hole wave function of low-lying octupole 3^{−} states in doubly magic nuclei is mainly due to the neutron-proton interaction. Both the enhanced reduced transition probability to the ground state, B(E3;3_{1}^{−}→0_{1}^{+}), and the coupling of the octupole excitation to a nucleon result from the coherent action of all the components of the collective state. The results obtained with a realistic shell-model interaction both for ^{208}Pb and for ^{209}Pb agree with the geometric collective model of Bohr and Mottelson, where octupole excitations are associated with phonons corresponding to collective shape oscillations of the surface of the nucleus.

Abstract

A lifetime measurement of the 19/2− state in 207Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a 208Pb beam impinging on a 100Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3,19/2−→13/2+)=40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in 207Pb. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in 207Pb is compatible with the contributions from single-phonon and single particle E3 as well as E3 strength arising from the double-octupole-phonon 6+ state, all adding coherently. A crucial aspect of the coupling model, namely the strong mixing between single-hole and the phonon-hole states, is confirmed in a realistic shell-model calculation. The low-lying high-spin yrast band structure of neutron-rich 113,118–121Ag has been established for the first time using prompt γ-ray spectroscopy of isotopically identified fission fragments produced in the 9Be(238U, fγ) fusion- and transfer-induced fission processes. Abstract

The rotational response as a function of neutron–proton asymmetry for the very neutron-rich isotopes of Rh (116–119Rh) has been obtained from the measurement of prompt γ rays from isotopically identified fragments, produced in fission reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The measured energy “signature” splitting of the yrast bands, when compared with the Triaxial Projected Shell Model (TPSM) calculations, shows the need for large, nearly constant, triaxial deformations. The present results are compared with global predictions for the existence of non axial shapes in the periodic table in the case of very neutron-rich nuclei Rh isotopes. The predicted trend of a second local maximum for a triaxial shape around N∼74 is not found.

Abstract

Low-lying high-spin yrast states in the exotic odd–odd isotopes 124–128Sb (Z=51) and 118–128In (Z=49), studied for the first time, show a striking difference in their observed γ-ray decay. With a single valence proton particle/hole occupying the g7/2/g9/2 spin-orbit partners, dominant electric quadrupole transitions occur in Sb as opposed to magnetic dipole transitions in In. The observed properties are explained on the basis of general principles of symmetry and with large-scale shell-model calculations, and reveal novel aspects of the competition between the neutron–proton interaction and the like-nucleon pairing interaction.

Abstract

International audience; Nuclear fission is still one of the most complex physical processes we can observe in nature due to the interplay of macroscopic and microscopic nuclear properties that decide the result. An example of this coupling is the presence of nuclear dissipation as an important ingredient that contributes to drive the dynamics and has a clear impact on the time of the process. However, different theoretical interpretations, and scarce experimental data make it poorly understood. In this Letter, we present the first experimental determination of the dissipation energy in fission as a function of the fragment split, for three different fissioning systems. The amount of dissipation was obtained through the measurement of the relative production of fragments with even and odd atomic numbers with respect to different initial fission energies. The results reveal a clear effect of particular nuclear shells on the dissipation and fission dynamics. In addition, the relative production of fragments with even and odd atomic numbers appears as a potential contributor to the long-standing problem of the time scale in fission.

9 pags., 8 figs., 4 tabs., Background: The Xe isotopic chain with four valence protons above the Z=50 shell closure is an ideal laboratory for the study of the evolution of nuclear deformation. At the N=82 shell closure, Xe136 presents all characteristics of a doubly closed shell nucleus with a spherical shape. In the very neutron-deficient isotopes close to N=50, the α-decay chain of Xe was investigated to probe the radioactive decay properties near the drip-line and the magicity of Sn100. Additionally, the Xe isotopes present higher order symmetries in the nuclear deformation such as the octupole degree of freedom near N=60 and N=90 or O(6) symmetry in stable isotopes. Purpose: The relevance of the O(6) symmetry has been investigated by measuring the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the first excited states in Xe124. In the O(6) symmetry limit, the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of collective states is expected to be null. Method: A stable Xe124 beam with energies of 4.03A MeV and 4.11A MeV was used to bombard a natW target at the GANIL facility. Excited states were populated via the safe Coulomb excitation reaction. The collision of the heavy ions with a large Z at low energy make this reaction sensitive to the diagonal E2 matrix element of the excited states. The recoils were detected in the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer and the γ rays in the AGATA tracking array. The least squares fitting code gosia was used for the analysis to extract both E2 and M1 transitional and E2 diagonal matrix elements. Results: The rotational ground state band was populated up to the 81+ state as well as the 22+ and 42+ states. Using high precision spectroscopic data to constrain the gosia fit, the spectroscopic quadrupole moments of the 21+, 41+, and 61+ states were determined for the first time. Conclusions: The spectroscopic quadrupole moments were found to be negative, large, and constant in the ground state band underlining the prolate axially deformed ground state band of Xe124. The present experimental data confirm that the O(6) symmetry is substantially broken in Xe124., This work was supported by STFC(UK). 7 pags., 3 figs., 1 tab., The reduced transition probabilities for the 4_{1}^{+}→2_{1}^{+} and 2_{1}^{+}→0_{1}^{+} transitions in ^{92}Mo and ^{94}Ru and for the 4_{1}^{+}→2_{1}^{+} and 6_{1}^{+}→4_{1}^{+} transitions in ^{90}Zr have been determined in this experiment making use of a multinucleon transfer reaction. These results have been interpreted on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations in the f_{5/2}, p_{3/2}, p_{1/2}, and g_{9/2} proton valence space. Only the combination of extensive lifetime information and large scale shell-model calculations allowed the extent of the seniority conservation in the N=50 g_{9/2} orbital to be understood. Abstract

International audience; The multi-nucleon transfer reaction between 136Xe beam and 198Pt target at the beam energy 7 MeV/u was studied using the large acceptance spectrometer VAMOS++ coupled with the newly installed second arm time-of-flight and delayed γ-ray spectrometer CATLIFE (Complementary Arm for Target LIke FragmEnts). The CATLIFE detector is composed of a large area multi-wire proportional chamber and the EXOGAM HPGe clover detectors with an ion flight length of 1230 mm. Direct measurement of the target-like fragments (TLF) and the delayed γ-rays from the isomeric state helps to improve TLF identification. The use of the velocity of TLFs and the delayed γ-ray demonstrate the proof of principle and effectiveness of the new setup.

Abstract

During the last decade, the use of inverse kinematics in the experimental study of fission is bringing a wealth of new observables obtained in single measurements, allowing their analysis and their correlations. An ongoing application of this technique is the basis of a series of experiments performed with the variable-mode, large-acceptance VAMOS++ spectrometer at GANIL. A recent experiment has been focused on the survival of the nuclear structure effects at high excitation energy in fission and quasi-fission. The full isotopic identification of fragments, the fission dynamics and the ratio between the production of fragments with even and odd atomic numbers, the so-called proton even-odd effect, are shown. The latter shows a different mechanism for fission and quasi-fission that could be used to separate fission from quasi-fission.

Abstract

Excited states of 17N, 18N and 19N were investigated through the measurement of gamma rays, following their population via deep-inelastic reactions induced by an 18O beam (7 MeV/u) on a thick 181Ta target. The experimental setup comprised the AGATA+PARIS detection system, coupled to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. In the 17N nucleus, the analysis of gamma-ray transitions de-exciting two states around 4-5 MeV clearly pointed to discrepancies with the lifetime values reported in literature. Three new gamma rays were observed in 18N at the energies of 1662.3 (3) keV, 2073.4 (8) keV and 2300.9 (8) keV, and hints for other two new transitions around 1566 keV and 1720 keV were found. In addition, a new transition with energy of 2489.7 (8) keV was observed in 19N.

Abstract

International audience; High-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy of N18 is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an O18 beam on a Ta181 target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in N18 below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 01− and 12− excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in N16 and N18, for the first time. Understanding the N18 structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range in products of low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions, with complex velocity distributions. The method is based on a detailed study of Doppler-broadened $$\gamma $$ γ -ray lineshapes. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the $$^{18}\text {O}(7.0\, \text {MeV/u})+\,^{181}\text {Ta}$$ 18 O ( 7.0 MeV/u ) + 181 Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in $$^{17}\text {O}$$ 17 O and $$^{19}\text {O}$$ 19 O , with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the $$\sim 20{-}400\,\text {fs}$$ ∼ 20 - 400 fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by $$\gamma $$ γ -tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

Abstract

New transitions in neutron-rich Y100 have been identified in a Be9+U238 experiment with mass and Z gates to provide full fragment identification. These transitions and high spin levels of Y100 have been investigated by analyzing the high statistics γ-γ-γ and γ-γ-γ-γ coincidence data from the spontaneous fission of Cf252 at the Gammasphere detector array. Two new bands, 14 new levels, and 23 new transitions have been identified. The Kπ=4+ new band decaying to a 1s isomeric state is assigned to be the high-K Gallagher-Moszkowski (GM) partner of the known Kπ=1+ band, with the π5/2[522] - ν3/2[411] configuration. This 4+ band is also proposed to be the pseudospin partner of the new Kπ=5+ band with a 5+π5/2[422] - ν5/2[413] configuration, to form a π5/2[422] - ν[3125/2,3/2] neutron pseudospin doublet. Constrained triaxial covariant density-functional theory and quantal particle rotor model calculations have been applied to interpret the band structure and available electromagnetic transition probabilities and are found to be in good agreement with experimental values.

Abstract

International audience; Excited states of neutron rich Iodine isotopes 130−134 I above the high spin isomers have been identified using prompt-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy. The Iodine isotopes have been produced as fission fragments of fusion-fission and transfer induced fission of 9 Be(238 U, f) at a beam energy of 6.2 MeV/u. The complete (A, Z) identification was obtained using the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer VAMOS++. The AGATA γ-ray tracking array was used to detect the prompt γ rays while the delayed γ rays (in the time range of 100 ns to 200 µs) from the isomeric states were identified by the EXOGAM segmented Clover detectors, placed behind the focal plane of VAMOS++ spectrometer. The high spin states above the (8 −) isomers in 130,132 I have been populated for the first time and a new isomer in 132 I has been identified. New γ-ray transition has also been assigned to the level structure of 134 I. Prompt transitions above the 19/2 − isomer have been identified in 131,133 I, for the first time. The level structures are interpreted in terms of the systematics of odd-Z nuclei above Z = 50 shell closure and large scale shell model calculations.

The interaction of the proton hole/particle in the above-mentioned orbitals with neutrons in the νh11/2 orbital is an important prerequisite to the understanding of the nuclear structure near N=82 and the νπ interaction. Purpose: To explore the structural similarity between the high-spin isomeric states in In (Z=49), Sn (Z=50), and Sb (Z=51) isotopes from a microscopic point of view. In addition, to understand the role of a proton hole or particle in the spin-orbit partner orbitals, πg9/2 and πg7/2, respectively, with neutron holes in the νh11/2 orbital on these aforementioned isomers. Methods: The fusion and transfer induced fission reaction Be9(U238, f) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy, using a unique setup consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++, and EXOGAM detectors, was used to populate through the fission process and study the neutron-rich In119,121 isotopes. This setup enabled the prompt-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of isotopes in the time range of 100ns-200μs. Results: In the odd-AIn119,121 isotopes, indications of a short half-life 19/2- isomeric state, in addition to the previously known 25/2+ isomeric state, were observed from the present data. Further, new prompt transitions above the 25/2+ isomer in In121 were identified along with reevaluation of its half-life. Conclusions: The experimental data were compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations in a restricted model space. The (πg9/2νh11/2;I|Ĥ|πg9/2νh11/2;I) two-body matrix elements of residual interaction were modified to explain the excitation energies and the B(E2) transition probabilities in the neutron-rich In isotopes. The (i) decreasing trend of E(29/2+)-E(25/2+) in odd-In (with dominant configuration πg9/2-1νh11/2-2 and maximum aligned spin of 29/2+) and (ii) increasing trend of E(27/2+)-E(23/2+) in odd-Sb (with dominant configuration πg7/2+1νh11/2-2 and maximum aligned spin of 27/2+) with increasing neutron number could be understood as a consequence of hole-hole and particle-hole interactions, respectively.

Abstract

The excited states in the transitional nucleus $^{131}\mathrm{Xe}$ have been populated by using $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-induced fusion-evaporation reaction and the de-exciting $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays were detected with the Compton suppressed clover detector setup of the Indian National Gamma Array coupled to digital data acquisition system. The existing level structure of $^{131}\mathrm{Xe}$ has been significantly extended with the observation and placement of 72 new $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions. The use of light-ion ($\ensuremath{\alpha}$) beam helped to identify several new band structures in $^{131}\mathrm{Xe}$ with different quasiparticle (qp) configurations. The multipolarities of the observed $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays have been determined on the basis of the directional correlation from oriented states ratio and polarization asymmetry measurements. The yrast negative-parity band has been confirmed up to ${35/2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ spin and the highly nonyrast signature partner of this band has been identified for the first time. The positive-parity band, based on the ${3/2}^{+}$ ground state, has been extended up to ${23/2}^{+}$ with the observation of a signature inversion, which signifies a pair of particle alignment around the spin of 15/2 $\ensuremath{\hbar}$. A dipole band, consisting of $M1$ transitions has been identified and assigned a 5-qp configuration. A new band structure built on a 3-qp ${23/2}^{+}$ state has been observed with a large signature splitting. A comparison in the isotopic and isotonic chains reveals the transitional nature of the $N=77$ nuclei. Total Routhian surface calculations have been performed to understand the structure of $^{131}\mathrm{Xe}$ associated with different configurations.

Abstract

The simultaneous measurement of the isotopic fission-fragment yields and fission-fragment velocities of U239 has been performed for the first time. The U239 fissioning system was produced in one-neutron transfer reactions between a U238 beam at 5.88 MeV/nucleon and a Be9 target. The combination of inverse kinematics at low energy and the use of the VAMOS++ spectrometer at the GANIL facility allows the isotopic identification of the full fission-fragment distribution and their velocity in the reference frame of the fissioning system. The proton and neutron content of the fragments at scission, their total kinetic and total excitation energy, as well as the neutron multiplicity were determined. Information from the scission point configuration is obtained from these observables and the correlation between them. The role of the octupole-deformed proton and neutron shells in the fission-fragment production is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Lifetimes of low-lying states in 73Ga and 70,72,74Zn were measured using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method. These nuclei were produced in deep-inelastic reactions in inverse kinematics with a 208Pb beam impinging on a 76Ge target. Prompt γ rays were detected using the AGATA tracking array coupled to the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Lifetime of the 5/2 − state in 73Ga, measured for the first time, provides additional evidence for the existence of a 1/2 −, 3/2 − ground-state doublet. The lifetimes of the 4 + states in 70,72,74Zn were remeasured in an attempt to understand the discrepancies observed between earlier measurements. Our results are in agreement with those of previous plunger experiments.

Abstract

A lifetime measurement of the 19/2 state in Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a Pb beam impinging on a Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3,19/2→13/2)=40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in Pb. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in Pb is compatible with the contributions from single-phonon and single particle E3 as well as E3 strength arising from the double-octupole-phonon 6 state, all adding coherently. A crucial aspect of the coupling model, namely the strong mixing between single-hole and the phonon-hole states, is confirmed in a realistic shell-model calculation.

Abstract

The high-spin states of the neutron-rich Ga81, with three valence protons outside a Ni78 core, were measured. The measurement involved prompt γ-ray spectroscopy of fission fragments isotopically identified using the combination of the variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++) and the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA). The new γ-ray transitions, observed in coincidence with Ga81 ions, and the corresponding level scheme do not confirm the high-spin levels reported earlier. The newly observed high-spin states in Ga81 are interpreted using the results of state-of-the-art large-scale shell model (LSSM) calculations. The lower excitation energy levels are understood as resulting from the recoupling of three valence protons to the closed doubly magic core, while the highest excitation energy levels correspond to excitations of the magic N=50 neutron core. These results support the doubly magic character of Ni78 and the persistence of the N=50 shell closure but also highlight the presence of strong proton-neutron correlations associated with the promotion of neutrons across the magic N=50 shell gap, only few nucleons away from Ni78.

Background: Levels fulfilling the seniority scheme and relevant isomers are commonly observed features in semimagic nuclei; for example, in Sn isotopes (Z=50). Seniority isomers in Sn, with dominantly pure neutron configurations, directly probe the underlying neutron-neutron (νν) interaction. Furthermore, an addition of a valence proton particle or hole, through neutron-proton (νπ) interaction, affects the neutron seniority as well as the angular momentum. Abstract

Fission at low excitation energy, is a process in which both macroscopic and microscopic aspects are involved. Some features in the total kinetic energy and in the N/Z distributions of the fragments, commonly associated with shell effects, came out in a series of recent experiments with high excitation energy fusionfission reactions in inverse kinematics. In the latest experiment of this campaign, a study of high-energy fission and quasi-fission between a 238U beam and a series of light targets was carried out by using the aforementioned technique, in order to probe the role of the shell structure in these processes.

Abstract

To study the nuclear structure of neutron-rich titanium isotopes, a lifetime measurement was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility in Caen, France. The nucleiwere produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction by using a 6.76 MeV/u 238U beam. The Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was employed for the γ-ray detection and target-like recoils were identified event-by-event by the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). Preliminary level lifetimes of the (5/2−) to 13/2− states of the yrast band in the neutron-rich nucleus 53Ti were measured for the first time employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method and the compact plunger for deep inelastic reactions. The differential decay curve method (DDCM) was used to obtain the lifetimes from the RDDS data.

Abstract

International audience; The use of the inverse kinematics technique and a magnetic spectrometer permits the simultaneous measurement of proton and neutron content of full fission fragment distributions. This paper reports new measurements of five fissioning systems—U238,Np239,Pu240,Cm244, and Cf250—produced in inelastic scattering, transfer, and fusion reactions at different excitation energies. As a result, isotopic, elemental, and isotonic fission yields are presented. The contribution of the different fission modes and the proton even-odd effect are studied. Structure effects are investigated by means of the neutron excess and the total neutron multiplicity as a function of the fragment atomic number.

Abstract

International audience; A direct and complete measurement of isotopic fission-fragment yields of U239 has been performed for the first time. The U239 fissioning system was produced with an average excitation energy of 8.3 MeV in one-neutron transfer reactions between a U238 beam and a Be9 target at Coulomb barrier energies. The fission fragments were detected and isotopically identified using the VAMOS++ spectrometer at the GANIL facility. The measurement allows us to directly evaluate the fission models at excitation energies of fast neutrons, which are relevant for next-generation nuclear reactors. The present data, in agreement with model calculations, do not support the recently reported anomaly in the fission-fragment yields of U239, and they confirm the persistence of spherical shell effects in the Sn region at excitation energies exceeding the fission barrier by a few mega-electron volts.

Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics - Extremes of the Nuclear Landscape -- AUG 26-SEP 02, 2018 -- Zakopane, POLAND, WOS: 000463866500052, Recent ab initio calculations pointed out the importance of the three-body terms of the nuclear interaction, in the description of the structure of n-rich systems. The state lifetimes in light n-rich carbon and oxygen nuclei have been predicted to be sensitive to the three-body terms and, in this context, an experiment, aiming at the measurement of these lifetimes, was performed in GANIL in July 2017 with the AGATA and PARIS arrays coupled to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. High spin band structures of neutron-rich $^{152--158}\mathrm{Pm}$ isotopes have been obtained from the measurement of prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays of isotopically identified fragments produced in fission of $^{238}\mathrm{U}+^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ and detected using the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer and EXOGAM segmented Clover array at GANIL and also from the high statistics $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ data from the spontaneous fission of $^{252}\mathrm{Cf}$ using Gammasphere. The excited states in $^{157}\mathrm{Pm}$ and those above the isomers in even-$A$ Pm isotopes $^{152,154,156,158}\mathrm{Pm}$ have been identified for the first time. The spectroscopic information on the rotational band structures in odd-$A$ Pm isotopes has been extended considerably to higher spins and the possibility of the presence of reflection asymmetric shapes is explored. The configuration assignments are based on the results of cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov calculations. From the systematics of bands in odd-$A$ Pm isotopes and weak population of opposite parity bands, octupole deformed shapes in neutron-rich Pm isotopes beyond $N=90$ seem unlikely to be present.

Abstract

International audience; An experiment aiming at measuring lifetimes of the second 2+ excited states in neutron-rich C and O isotopes was recently performed at the GANIL laboratory, in France. In these nuclei, recent ab initio calculations provide a detailed description of the nuclear excited states, predicting a strong sensitivity of the electromagnetic transition probabilities to the details of the nucleon–nucleon interactions, especially in connection with the role played by the three-body (NNN) forces. Thus, the measurement of 2 + states lifetimes in this region will be a stringent test of the importance of including the NNN forces in describing the electromagnetic properties of selected nuclear states. This contribution reports on the status of the experimental analysis for the case of lifetimes in 20O.

Abstract

Transfer- and fusion-induced fission in inverse kinematics has proved to be a powerful tool to investigate nuclear fission, widening information on the fission fragments and access to unstable fissioning systems with respect to other experimental approaches. An experimental campaign is being carried out at GANIL with this technique since 2008. In these experiments, a beam of U-238, accelerated to 6.1 MeV/u, impinges on a C-12 target. Fissioning systems from U to Cf are populated through inelastic scattering, transfer, and fusion reactions, with excitation energies that range from a few MeV up to 46 MeV. The use of inverse kinematics, the SPIDER telescope, and the VAMOS spectrometer allow the characterization of the fissioning system in terms of mass, nuclear charge, and excitation energy, and the isotopic identification of the full fragment distribution. This work reports on new data from the second experiment of the campaign on fission-fragment yields of the heavy actinides U-238, Np-239, Pu-240, Cm-244, and Cf-250, which are of interest from both fundamental and application points of view.

Abstract

We show that fully aligned neutron-proton pairs play a crucial role in the low-energy spectroscopy of nuclei. with valence nucleons in a high-j orbital. Their dominance is valid in nuclei with valence neutrons and protons in different high-j orbitals as well as in N = Z nuclei, where all nucleons occupy the same orbital. We demonstrate analytically this generic feature of the neutron-proton interaction for a variety of systems with four valence nucleons interacting through realistic, effective forces. The dominance of fully aligned neutron-proton pairs results from the combined effect of (i) angular momentum coupling and (ii) basic properties of the neutron-proton interaction., 5 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

A new experimental setup to measure prompt-delayed $\gamma$ -ray coincidences from isotopically identified fission fragments, over a wide time range of 100ns-200μ s, is presented. The fission fragments were isotopically identified, on an event-by-event basis, using the VAMOS++ large acceptance spectrometer. The prompt $\gamma$ rays emitted at the target position and corresponding delayed $ \gamma$ rays emitted at the focal plane of the spectrometer were detected using, respectively, thirty two crystals of the AGATA $\gamma$ -ray tracking array and seven EXOGAM HPGe Clover detectors. Fission fragments produced in fusion and transfer-induced fission reactions, using a 238U beam at an energy of 6.2 MeV/u impinging on a 9Be target, were used to characterize and qualify the performance of the detection system.

Abstract

Prompt γ-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich $^{96}$Kr, produced in transfer- and fusion-induced fission reactions, has been performed using the combination of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array and the VAMOS++ spectrometer. A second excited state, assigned to $J^π$ = $4^+$, is observed for the first time, and a previously reported level energy of the first 2+ excited state is confirmed. The measured energy ratio R4/2 = E($4^+$)/E($2^+$) = 2.12(1) indicates that this nucleus does not show a well-developed collectivity contrary to that seen in heavier N = 60 isotones. This new measurement highlights an abrupt transition of the degree of collectivity as a function of the proton number at Z = 36, of similar amplitude to that observed at N = 60 at higher Z values. A possible reason for this abrupt transition could be related to the insufficient proton excitations in the g9/2, d5/2, and s1/2 orbitals to generate strong quadrupole correlations or to the coexistence of competing different shapes. An unexpected continuous decrease of R4/2 as a function of the neutron number up to N = 60 is also evidenced. This measurement establishes the Kr isotopic chain as the low-Z boundary of the island of deformation for N = 60 isotones. A comparison with available theoretical predictions using different beyond mean-field approaches shows that these models fail to reproduce the abrupt transitions at N = 60 and Z = 36.

Abstract

Abstract

International audience; The multi-nucleon transfer reaction mechanism was used to produce and study nuclei in the vicinity of 208Pb. This mass region is a test case for the nuclear shell model. The mass identification of the fragments was performed with the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer VAMOS++ coupled to the AGATA γ-tracking array. This experiment aimed to determine both lifetimes and gyromagnetic ratios of excited states with the Cologne plunger device. The analysis indicates promising results with the possibility to determine several new lifetimes in this region.

Abstract

Measurements of prompt γ rays in coincidence with isotopically-identified fission fragments, produced in collisions of 238 U on a 9 Be target, at an energy around the Coulomb barrier are reported. This technique provides simultaneous access to the spectroscopy of many nuclei, extending to very neutron-rich isotopes and fairly high angular momenta. The structural evolution of the neutron-rich zirconium isotopes is discussed in the light of the present measurements in Zr105,106 and in the context of the interacting boson model with a global parameterization that includes triaxiality but no shape coexistence.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL/VAMOS++/EXOGAM; International audience; The rotational response as a function of neutron–proton asymmetry for the very neutron-rich isotopes of Rh (116–119Rh) has been obtained from the measurement of prompt γ rays from isotopically identified fragments, produced in fission reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The measured “signature” splitting of the yrast bands, when compared with the Triaxial Projected Shell Model (TPSM) calculations, shows the need for large, nearly constant, triaxial deformations. The present results are compared with global predictions for the existence of non axial shapes in the periodic table in the case of very neutron-rich nuclei Rh isotopes. The predicted trend of a second local maximum for a triaxial shape around N∼74 is not found.

Abstract

International audience; Production of neutron-rich nuclei around N = 126 by multinucleon transfer reactions has recently gained a renewal of interest both theoretically and experimentally. We are now advancing the KISS project at RIKEN to produce those nuclei by multinucleon transfer reactions and measure their lifetimes to investigate the astrophysical environments of the r-process. To investigate the relevance of the production mechanism, we performed measurements for the reaction system 136Xe + 198Pt, using the spectrometer VAMOS++ and the gamma-ray array EXOGAM at GANIL. Cross sections deduced from the measurements for neutron-rich nuclei around N = 126 show a modest enhancement when compared with the GRAZING calculations, indicating the advantage of the multinucleon transfer reactions as compared with fragmentation for production of N = 126 neutron-rich isotones. The possibility for production of neutron-rich nuclei around uranium beyond N = 126 by multinucleon transfer reactions is also discussed.

Abstract

The conference in EPJ Web of Conferences entitled "ND 2016 International Conference on Nuclear Data for Science and Technology", ISBN: 978-2-7598-9020-0; International audience; Transfer-and fusion-induced fission in inverse kinematics was proven to be a powerful tool to investigate nuclear fission, widening the information of the fission fragments and the access to unstable fissioning systems with respect to other experimental approaches. An experimental campaign for fission investigation has being carried out at GANIL with this technique since 2008. In these experiments, a beam of 238 U, accelerated to 6.1 MeV/u, impinges on a 12 C target. Fissioning systems from U to Cf are populated through transfer and fusion reactions, with excitation energies that range from few MeV up to 46 MeV. The use of inverse kinematics, the SPIDER telescope, and the VAMOS spectrometer permitted the characterization of the fissioning system in terms of mass, nuclear charge, and excitation energy, and the isotopic identification of the full fragment distribution. The neutron excess, the total neutron multiplicity, and the even-odd staggering in the nuclear charge of fission fragments are presented as a function of the excitation energy of the fissioning system. Structure effects are observed at Z∼50 and Z∼55, where their impact evolves with the excitation energy.

Abstract

During the AGATA campaign at GANIL, the neutron-deficient Sn region was populated via a multi-nucleon transfer reaction in order to directly measure the lifetime of the first excited states with a plunger device, providing complementary information to previous results obtained with Coulomb excitation experiments. Abstract

Prompt γ rays of isotopically identified neutron-rich isotopes of Cd, produced in transfer- and fusion-fission induced by the 238U beam at 6.2 MeV/u on a 9Be target, were measured using the EXOGAM γ -ray detector array and the magnetic spectrometer VAMOS++. New results for the level scheme of 121,123Cd, extending to relatively large angular momentum are reported. The energy levels above 2-MeV excitation energy, are found to differ from those observed in lighter isotopes of Cd indicating a change in structure in these more neutron-rich nuclei. These states are not explained by large-scale shell model calculations, that explain well the structure of the underlying Sn isotopes and the neighboring even-A Cd isotopes. The present data, especially for the odd-A nuclei, point to a deficiency in the matrix elements related to the p-n residual interaction and provide a new domain for testing widely used shell model interactions employed for understanding the evolution of structure in neutron-rich nuclei.
