The budget of reactive nitrogen species, which play a central role in atmospheric chemistry (e.g. in photochemical O3 production), is poorly understood in forested regions. In this study, through observations of NO, NO2, NOy, and O3 in the Rambouillet Forest near Paris, France, we have examined nighttime processes controlling NOx in an anthropogenically impacted forest environment. The O3 mixing ratios displayed a strong diel profile at the site that was driven by a variable but generally rapid deposition to soil and foliar surfaces. The O3 diel profile was strongly influenced by relative humidity and temperature inversion. Only when the O3 mixing ratio was sufficiently low (and thus the NO lifetime sufficiently long) were sustained NO peaks observed above the instrumental detection limit, enabling the derivation of average NO emission rates of ∼1.4 ppbv h−1 from the soil. Observations of the lack of increase in NO2 at night, despite a significant production rate from the reaction of NO with O3, enabled an effective lifetime of NO2 of ∼0.5–3 h to be derived. As the loss of NO2 was not compensated for by the formation of gas- or particle-phase reactive nitrogen species, it was presumably either driven by deposition to soil and foliar surfaces or any products formed were themselves short-lived with respect to deposition. By comparison, the daytime lifetime of NO2 with respect to loss by reaction with OH is about 1 d. Our results indicate that the nighttime deposition of NO2 is a major sink of boundary layer NOx in this temperate forest environment.

We present direct measurements of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC)-induced nitrate radical (NO3) reactivity (kVOC) through the diel cycle in the suburban, temperate forest of Rambouillet near Paris (France). The data were obtained in a 6-week summer period in 2022 as part of the Atmospheric ChemistRy Of the Suburban foreSt (ACROSS) campaign. kVOC was measured in a small (700 m2) clearing mainly at a height of 5.5 m above ground level but also at 40 m (for 5 d and nights). At nighttime, mean values (and 25th–75th percentile ranges) of knightVOC(5.5m) = (0.24-0.06+0.32) s−1 and knightVOC(40m) = (0.016-0.007+0.018) s−1 indicate a significant vertical gradient and low NO3 reactivity above the canopy, whereas knightVOC(5.5 m) showed peak values of up to 2 s−1 close to the ground. The strong vertical gradient in NO3 reactivity could be confirmed by measurements between 0 and 24 m on one particular night characterized by a strong temperature inversion and is a result of the decoupling of air masses aloft from the ground- and canopy-level sources of BVOCs (and nitric oxide, NO). No strong vertical gradient was observed in the mean daytime NO3 reactivity, with kdayVOC(5.5m) = (0.12 ± 0.04) s−1 for the entire campaign and kdayVOC(40m) = (0.07 ± 0.02) s−1 during the 5 d period. Within the clearing, the fractional contribution of VOCs to the total NO3 loss rate coefficient (ktot, determined by photolysis, reaction with NO and VOCs) was 80 %–90 % during the night and ∼ 50 % during the day. In terms of chemical losses of α-pinene below canopy height in the clearing, we find that at nighttime hydroxyl radicals (OH) and ozone (O3) dominate, with NO3 contributing “only” 17 %, which decreases further to 8.5 % during the day. Based on measured OH, measured O3, and calculated NO3 concentrations, the chemical lifetime of BVOCs at noon is about 1 h and is likely to be longer than timescales of transport out of the canopy (typically of the order of minutes), thus significantly reducing the importance of daytime in-canopy processing. Clearly, in forested regions where sufficient nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide (NOx) is available, the role of NO3 and OH as initiators of BVOC oxidation is not strictly limited to nighttime and daytime, respectively, as often implied in e.g. atmospheric chemistry textbooks.

Furans are emitted to the atmosphere during biomass burning from the pyrolysis of cellulose. They are one of the major contributing volatile organic compound (VOC) classes to OH and NO3 reactivity in biomass burning plumes. The major removal process of furans from the atmosphere at night is reaction with the nitrate radical, NO3. Here, we report a series of relative rate experiments in the 7300 L indoor simulation chamber at Institut de Combustion Aérothermique Réactivité et Environnement, Centre national de la recherche scientifique (ICARE-CNRS), Orléans, using a number of different reference compounds to determine NO3 reaction rate coefficients for four furans, two furanones, and pyrrole. In the case of the two furanones, this is the first time that NO3 rate coefficients have been reported. The recommended values (cm3 molec.−1 s−1) are as follows: furan, (1.49 ± 0.23) × 10−12; 2-methylfuran, (2.26 ± 0.52) × 10−11; 2,5-dimethylfuran, (1.02 ± 0.31) × 10−10; furfural (furan-2-aldehyde), (9.07 ± 2.3) × 10−14; α-angelicalactone (5-methyl-2(3H)-furanone), (3.01 ± 0.45) × 10−12; γ-crotonolactone (2(5H)-furanone), <1.4 × 10−16; and pyrrole, (6.94 ± 1.9) × 10−11. The furfural + NO3 reaction rate coefficient is found to be an order of magnitude smaller than previously reported. These experiments show that for furan, alkyl-substituted furans, α-angelicalactone, and pyrrole, reaction with NO3 will be the dominant removal process at night and may also contribute during the day. For γ-crotonolactone, reaction with NO3 is not an important atmospheric sink.

Rate coefficients for the reaction of NO3 radicals with a series of aromatic aldehydes were measured in a 7300 L simulation chamber at ambient temperature and pressure by relative and absolute methods. The rate coefficients for benzaldehyde (BA), ortho-tolualdehyde (O-TA), meta-tolualdehyde (M-TA), para-tolualdehyde (P-TA), 2,4-dimethyl benzaldehyde (2,4-DMBA), 2,5-dimethyl benzaldehyde (2,5-DMBA) and 3,5-dimethyl benzaldehyde (3,5-DMBA) were k1= 2.6 ± 0.3, k2= 8.7 ± 0.8, k3= 4.9 ± 0.5, k4= 4.9 ± 0.4, k5= 15.1 ± 1.3, k6= 12.8 ± 1.2 and k7= 6.2 ± 0.6, respectively, in the units of 10−15 cm3 molec.−1 s−1 at 298 ± 2 K. The rate coefficient k13 for the reaction of the NO3 radical with deuterated benzaldehyde (benzaldehyde-d1) was found to be half that of k1. The end product of the reaction in an excess of NO2 was measured to be C6H5C(O)O2NO2. Theoretical calculations of aldehydic bond energies and reaction pathways indicate that the NO3 radical reacts primarily with aromatic aldehydes through the abstraction of an aldehydic hydrogen atom. The atmospheric implications of the measured rate coefficients are briefly discussed.

We present a digital, freely available, searchable, and evaluated compilation of rate coefficients for the gas-phase reactions of organic compounds with OH, Cl, and NO3 radicals and with O3. Although other compilations of many of these data exist, many are out of date, most have limited scope, and all are difficult to search and to load completely into a digitized form. This compilation uses results of previous reviews, though many recommendations are updated to incorporate new or omitted data or address errors, and includes recommendations on many reactions that have not been reviewed previously. The database, which incorporates over 50 years of measurements, consists of a total of 2765 recommended bimolecular rate coefficients for the reactions of 1357 organic substances with OH, 709 with Cl, 310 with O3, and 389 with NO3, and is much larger than previous compilations. Many compound types are present in this database, including naturally occurring chemicals formed in or emitted to the atmosphere and anthropogenic compounds such as halocarbons and their degradation products. Recommendations are made for rate coefficients at 298 K and, where possible, the temperature dependences over the entire range of the available data. The primary motivation behind this project has been to provide a large and thoroughly evaluated training dataset for the development of structure–activity relationships (SARs), whose reliability depends fundamentally upon the availability of high-quality experimental data. However, there are other potential applications of this work, such as research related to atmospheric lifetimes and fates of organic compounds, or modelling gas-phase reactions of organics in various environments. The potential impact of CCl2FCF3 (CFC-114a) and the recently observed CCl2FCCl2F (CFC-112), CCl3CClF2 (CFC-112a), and CCl3CF3 (CFC-113a) chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on stratospheric ozone and climate is presently not well characterized. In this study, the UV absorption spectra of these CFCs were measured between 192.5 and 235 nm over the temperature range 207–323 K. Precise parameterizations of the UV absorption spectra are presented. A 2-D atmospheric model was used to evaluate the CFC atmospheric loss processes, lifetimes, ozone depletion potentials (ODPs), and the associated uncertainty ranges in these metrics due to the kinetic and photochemical uncertainty. The CFCs are primarily removed in the stratosphere by short-wavelength UV photolysis with calculated global annually averaged steady-state lifetimes (years) of 63.6 (61.9–64.7), 51.5 (50.0–52.6), 55.4 (54.3–56.3), and 105.3 (102.9–107.4) for CFC-112, CFC-112a, CFC-113a, and CFC-114a, respectively. The range of lifetimes given in parentheses is due to the 2σ uncertainty in the UV absorption spectra and O(1D) rate coefficients included in the model calculations. The 2-D model was also used to calculate the CFC ozone depletion potentials (ODPs) with values of 0.98, 0.86, 0.73, and 0.72 obtained for CFC-112, CFC-112a, CFC-113a, and CFC-114a, respectively. Using the infrared absorption spectra and lifetimes determined in this work, the CFC global warming potentials (GWPs) were estimated to be 4260 (CFC-112), 3330 (CFC-112a), 3650 (CFC-113a), and 6510 (CFC-114a) for the 100-year time horizon.

The first airborne measurements of formic acid mixing ratios over the United Kingdom were measured on the FAAM BAe-146 research aircraft on 16 March 2010 with a chemical ionization mass spectrometer using I− reagent ions. The I− ionization scheme was able to measure formic acid mixing ratios at 1 Hz in the boundary layer. In-flight standard addition calibrations from a formic acid source were used to determine the instrument sensitivity of 35 ± 6 ion counts pptv−1 s−1 and a limit of detection of 25 pptv. Routine measurements were made through a scrubbed inlet to determine the instrumental background. Three plumes of formic acid were observed over the UK, originating from London, Humberside and Tyneside. The London plume had the highest formic acid mixing ratio throughout the flight, peaking at 358 pptv. No significant correlations of formic acid with NOx and ozone were found, but a positive correlation was observed between CO and HCOOH within the two plumes where coincident data were recorded. A trajectory model was employed to determine the sources of the plumes and compare modelled mixing ratios with measured values. The model underestimated formic acid concentrations by up to a factor of 2. This is explained by missing sources in the model, which were considered to be both primary emissions of formic acid of mainly anthropogenic origin and a lack of precursor emissions, such as isoprene, from biogenic sources, whose oxidation in situ would lead to formic acid formation.

Gas-phase ethene ozonolysis experiments were conducted at room temperature to determine formic acid yields as a function of relative humidity (RH) using the integrated EXTreme RAnge chamber-Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry technique, employing a CH3I ionisation scheme. RHs studied were 2OO with water compared with decomposition. This analysis suggests that the rate of reaction with water ranges between 1×10−12–1×10−15 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 and will therefore dominate its loss with respect to bimolecular processes in the atmosphere. Global model integrations suggest that this reaction between CH2OO and water may dominate the production of HC(O)OH in the atmosphere.

Eleven instruments for the measurement of ambient concentrations of atmospheric ammonia gas (NH3), based on eight different measurement methods were inter-compared above an intensively managed agricultural field in late summer 2008 in Southern Scotland. To test the instruments over a wide range of concentrations, the field was fertilised with urea midway through the experiment, leading to an increase in the average concentration from 10 to 100 ppbv. The instruments deployed included three wet-chemistry systems, one with offline analysis (annular rotating batch denuder, RBD) and two with online-analysis (Annular Denuder sampling with online Analysis, AMANDA; AiRRmonia), two Quantum Cascade Laser Absorption Spectrometers (a large-cell dual system; DUAL-QCLAS, and a compact system; c-QCLAS), two photo-acoustic spectrometers (WaSul-Flux; Nitrolux-100), a Cavity Ring Down Spectrosmeter (CRDS), a Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometer (CIMS), an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) and an Open-Path Fourier Transform Infra-Red (OP-FTIR) Spectrometer. The instruments were compared with each other and with the average concentration of all instruments. An overall good agreement of hourly average concentrations between the instruments (R2>0.84), was observed for NH3 concentrations at the field of up to 120 ppbv with the slopes against the average ranging from 0.67 (DUAL-QCLAS) to 1.13 (AiRRmonia) with intercepts of −0.74 ppbv (RBD) to +2.69 ppbv (CIMS). A design of and initial results from a Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometer (KEMS) are presented. The design was adapted from high temperature alloy studies with a view to using it to measure vapour pressures for low volatility organics. The system uses a temperature controlled cell with an effusive orifice. This produces a molecular beam which is sampled by a quadropole mass spectrometer with electron impact ionization calibrated to a known vapour pressure. We have determined P(298 K) and ΔHsub of the first 5 saturated straight chain dicarboxylic acids: 2.15±1.19×10-2 Pa and 75±19 KJ mol−1 respectively for oxalic acid, 5.73±1.14×10-4 Pa and 91±4 KJ mol−1 for Malonic acid, 1.13±0.47×10-4 Pa and 93±6 KJ mol−1 for Succinic acid, 4.21±1.66×10-4 Pa and 123±22 KJ mol−1 for Glutaric acid and 6.09±3.85×10-6 Pa and 125±40 KJ mol−1 for Adipic acid.

The reactivity of aromatic compounds is of great relevance to pure and applied chemical disciplines, yet existing methods for estimating gas-phase rate coefficients for their reactions with free radicals lack accuracy and universality. Here a novel approach is taken, whereby strong relationships between rate coefficients of aromatic hydrocarbons and a Randić-type topological index are investigated, optimized and developed into a method which requires no specialist software or computing power. Measured gas-phase rate coefficients for the reaction of aromatic hydrocarbons with OH radicals were correlated with a calculated Randić-type index, and optimized by including a term for side chain length. Although this method is exclusively for use with hydrocarbons, it is more diverse than any single existing methodology since it incorporates alkenylbenzenes into correlations, and can be extended towards other radical species such as O(3P) (and tentatively NO3, H and Cl). A comparison (with species common to both techniques) is made between the topological approach advocated here and a popular approach based on electrophilic subsituent constants, where it compares favourably. A modelling study was carried out to assess the impact of using estimated rate coefficients as opposed to measured data in an atmospheric model. The difference in model output was negligible for a range of NOx concentrations, which implies that this method has utility in complex chemical models. Strong relationships (e.g. for OH, R2=0.96) between seemingly diverse compounds including benzene, multisubstituted benzenes with saturated, unsaturated, aliphatic and cyclic substitutions and the nonbenzenoid aromatic, azulene suggests that the Randić-type index presented here represents a new and effective way of describing aromatic reactivity, based on a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR).
