Aim: This study evaluated assess the mechanical properties and forces produced by transpalatal bars made from low-nickel alloy. Methods: Using a template, a single operator made all transpalatal bars from 0.032" and 0.036" wires of two different alloys, thus originating four groups, namely: A8 (0.032" conventional stainless steel), B8 (0.032" low-nickel stainless steel), A9 (0.036" conventional stainless steel), and B9 (0.036" low-nickel stainless steel). The bars were then activated and mounted onto a device developed to serve as a support for mechanical assay in a universal testing machine (Emic DL 10.000). The values of resilience and ductility were obtained using the Origin 8 software. Results: No statistically significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed between Groups A8 and B8 neither between A9 and B9 for 0.5-, 1.0-, and 5-mm deformations. However, statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) were found in all groups for 15-mm deformation. Groups B8 and B9 showed greater ductility and resilience compared to groups A8 and A9, respectively. Conclusions: Low-nickel stainless steel transpalatal bars release the same amount of force for activations less than 10 mm compared to those made from conventional stainless steel. Mechanically, the low-nickel stainless steel bars are more ductile and resilient.

Aim: To verify the hypothesis that self-ligating brackets favor greater aggregation of microorganisms when compared with conventional brackets. Methods: Four types of self-ligating metal brackets were evaluated. Initially, 50 brackets were divided into five groups (n=10): Morelli Conventional, GAC (In-Ovation R, Dentsply Caulk), Aditek (Easy Clip), Ormco (Damon System) and 3M Unitek (Smart Clip). An in vivo evaluation was carried out in which the brackets were bonded to the mandibular teeth of five healthy individuals who had not undergone previous orthodontic treatment. The right hemiarch brackets were used for bacterial plaque collection and those on the left side were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Before bracket bonding, the bacterial plaque material aggregated to the tooth surfaces was collected, with the areas of choice being the cervical-buccal and mesial and distal interproximal regions. After 21 days had elapsed since bonding, the plaque adhered to the winglet, channel and cervical regions of the bracket bases was collected. The materials collected were diluted and seeded on Petri dishes onto Mitis salivarius medium specific for S. mutans and non-specified BHI culture medium. Colony forming unit (CFU) counts were performed visually after 24, 48 and 72 h of incubation. Results: Greater bacterial accumulation was observed on the winglets of 3M brackets, with statistical statistically significant differences from the other types (p

SummaryBackground Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a rare metabolic disorder, characterized by photosensitivity, caused by errors of the haem biosynthetic pathway. Avoidance of sun exposure is recommended; however, some patients suggested a paradoxical improvement of symptoms when they move to sunny areas. Objectives In a national French study, we sought to investigate the influence of sun exposure on EPP symptoms. Materials and methods We used a national transversal observational study by questionnaire. Patients were selected from the national record of the Centre Francais des Porphyries (French Porphyrias referral centre). Sun exposure level by geographic area was assessed using climate data provided by the French national meteorological service (Meteo France). Results Eighty-nine patients were included. We notably observed that 40% of patients declared an improvement in their tolerance of sun exposure after repeated sun exposures. In the more sunny areas, the intensity of the pain was lower (r = −0·26) and the duration of the sun exposure responsible for flares was longer (r = 0·39) than in the areas that were less sunny (P < 0·05). Conclusions This study proposes a benefit of natural progressive sun exposure for patients with EPP.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient acceptance and perception of pain with regard to orthodontic mini-implants. The study was conducted on 58 individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment, who had orthodontic mini-implants placed as anchorage devices. Data were collected using a questionnaire containing 6 questions evaluating perception of pain during mini-implant placement and during use, difficulty with cleaning, unaesthetic appearance, difficulty with eating and benefits observed. Data were tabulated and analyzed using Fisher and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient tests. It was found that 94.8% of the patients reported that they would be willing to undergo treatment with mini-implants again. Of the negative aspects evaluated, the most significant was discomfort during placement, while the least significant was difficulty with eating. Patients' perception of aspects related to mini-implants was shown to be independent of the quantity of these devices placed. Although the patients evaluated some aspects of mini-implants negatively, the mean score for benefits observed was very high, indicating good patient satisfaction with treatment.

Contexte. Conclusion. Cette étude a permis d’aboutir à un schéma intégratif modélisant les stratégies des tuteurs pour accompagner un étudiant en difficulté. Ce schéma pourra aider à construire un outil d’aide pour les tuteurs.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to assess the perception and knowledge of Brazilian orthodontists on the ideal moment to treat Class II malocclusions. Questionnaires with open, semi-open and close questions were sent by e-mail to 1653 Brazilian orthodontists. These orthodontists were registered in the Brazilian Association of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (ABOR). One-hundred and three (9.86%) Orthodontists replied to the questionnaires. Most of them were males (60.5%) with specialization as the highest level of professional qualification (59.9%). Most of the orthodontists (51%) reported preference for treating Class II malocclusions in late mixed dentition, followed by the early mixed dentition (29%). The age range between 10 and 12 years old figured as the most prevalent in patients searching for treatment (42.7%). Most of the patients searching for treatment were females (69.7%). Preferences for functional orthopedic appliances were reported by 35% of the orthodontists. Brazilian orthodontists revealed a trend for treating patients with Class II malocclusions in the late mixed dentition. Female patients aged from 10 to 12 years old represented the majority of patients that search for orthodontic treatment. Functional orthopedic appliances were preferred by Brazilian orthodontists for treating Class II malocclusions.

- Abstract
Background: Collaborative practice in primary health care increases care quality and security. In France, primary health care professionals increasingly work together. The link between general practitioners (GPs) and community pharmacists (CPs) is an important element. Nevertheless, effective collaboration between GPs and CPs is difficult to develop and formalize. Interprofessional education has been identified as a necessary step to prepare "collaborative practice-ready professionals". We aimed to identify the interprofessional training needs of last-year GP and CP students to develop interprofessional collaborations., Method: We conducted an analysis of training needs using a method inspired by occupational didactics. We collected data through individual semidirective interviews with CPs and GPs in 2022. At each stage we aimed to identify the elements of the occupational didactics to deduce the training needs in the form of a frame of reference: apparent competencies, emblematic situations and acting characteristics. We conducted an initial deductive thematic analysis to identify the apparent competencies of the two professions, the emblematic situations in which these competencies are used, and the acting characteristics used in these situations. We made an inductive categorization to define the collaborative competence and the families of situations and to model the actions of this GP-CP collaboration., Results: We defined the competency "to collaborate effectively in an interprofessional setting in order to respond to care issues in one's territory" expressed in various professional situations. We described it by three capacities based on two interacting dynamics: one-off exchanges and structured collaborations. Various communication tools facilitate the implementation of these interactions. We modeled the actions of the GP-CP collaboration in the form of a conceptual map., Conclusion: The collaboration between the CP and the GP implements a competency that could be integrated into their professional referential. This competency, entitled "collaborating effectively in interprofessional settings to respond to care issues in one's territory", is expressed in a variety of professional situations. It is based on two parallel and interacting dynamics: one-off exchanges and a dynamic of lasting collaboration. This study thus lays the groundwork for the development of this collaborative skill among general practice and pharmacy residents., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

- Abstract
Background: The extreme vulnerability experienced by patients in palliative care may result in significant distress. These patients require appropriate care while not pathologizing their natural distress. Given the challenges of caring for people experiencing significant distress, it is important to understand what professionals in training may feel when caring for patients in palliative care. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how professionals in training feel when confronted with the distress of patients undergoing palliative care., Methods: A qualitative study employing interpretative phenomenological analysis was conducted. In 2022, 11 physicians in training were interviewed about their experiences with distressed patients due to palliative care. The interviews were conducted via video conference. The students participated in the national palliative care cross-training and were in their final year of residency training., Results: The interviews revealed the following five themes: feelings of powerlessness, duty to act, difficulty in building a relationship, feeling insecure about oneself, and creating a space for listening and relating. All participants felt powerless in front of their patient's distress. Numerous defense mechanisms were identified that made the relationship with the patient difficult. Four participants described being able to create a space for listening and relating to their patients., Conclusions: A minority of students could establish a quality relationship with their distressed patients. Two concepts, interprofessional education and the patient-centered approach, were identified and could be developed in training., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

- Abstract
Objectives: Answer the question: What is the effectiveness of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF
4 ) when compared to other fluorides, placebo solution or a negative control to prevent or treat dental caries and tooth erosion?, Materials and Methods: This review is in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. In vivo and in situ studies that used TiF4 over enamel or dentine were included. Electronic searches were conducted on MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, WOS, Cochrane Library, VLH, Clinical Trials and OpenGrey. Risk of bias (ROB) assessments used RoB2 and ROBINS-I for randomized and non-randomized controlled trials (RCTs and on-RCTs); Syrcle's ROB tool for animal studies; and a modified tool proposed by Hollanders for in situ studies., Results: A total of 28 studies met the eligibility criteria. From these, 6 were in humans (3 RCT and 3 Non-RCT); 4 were in animals and 18 were in situ. For in vivo studies, all RCTs have some concerns related to ROB and all of the non-RCT studies were classified as with serious risk. One animal study had a low and three a high ROB. Regarding in situ studies, seven had a low, ten had an average and only one had a high ROB. The certainty of the evidence (GRADE) ranged from moderate to very low., Conclusions: Although most of the results suggest a positive effect of TiF4 on the prevention and treatment of caries and dental erosion, it is not possible to have definitive conclusions due to the high studies' methodological heterogeneity, and the low quality of evidence for most outcomes., Registration: The protocol of this syste. atic review was registered in the OPEN SCIENCE FRAMEWORK database (osf.io/6dgs9) DOI:10.17605/OSF.IO/KUZA7 on 6 August 2020.- Published

Purpose: To determine the most and least attractive smiles from a Brazilian sample and to correlate the anatomical characteristics identified in these smiles., Materials and Methods: Orthodontists, dentists, and laypeople assessed the photographs of 86 students (66 women and 20 men), aged between 19 and 30 years, using a visual analog scale (VAS). An evaluator blinded to the results measured the esthetic composition of the eight photographs with the highest and the eight with the lowest ratings for women, and the two with the highest and the two with the lowest ratings for men. The mean and standard deviations were calculated for the descriptive analysis., Results: A total of 42 anatomical smile details were identified and described, obtaining the means of the characteristics., Conclusions: The following characteristics were observed from the selected most attractive smiles: parallel smile arc, oval-shaped incisors with square-rounded edges, increase of the incisal embrasure and reduction of connector space in distal progression, display of maxillary incisors and minimum display of mandibular teeth, gingival margin of central incisors 0.5 mm coronal to the canines and 0.8 mm apical to the lateral incisors, posterior gingival display of 1.5 mm, less than 20% of buccal corridor and display of 12 teeth, and canines with -2 degrees of inclination. The most attractive smiles also had an absence of asymmetries, diastemas, black spaces, incisal plane inclination, and anterior gingival display.

- Abstract
Titanium mini-implants have been successfully used as anchorage devices in Orthodontics. Commercially pure titanium (cpTi) was recently replaced by Ti-6Al-4V alloy as the mini-implant material base due to the higher strength properties of the alloy. However, the lower corrosion resistance and the lower biocompatibility have been lowering the success rate of Ti-6Al-4V mini-implants. Nanostructured titanium (nTi) is commercially pure titanium that was nanostructured by a specific technique of severe plastic deformation. It is bioinert, does not contain potentially toxic or allergic additives, and has higher specific strength properties than any other titanium applied in medical implants. The higher strength properties associated to the higher biocompatibility make nTi potentially useful for orthodontic mini-implant applications, theoretically overcoming cpTi and Ti-6Al-4V mini-implants. The purposes of the this work were to process nTi, to mechanically compare cpTi, Ti-6Al-4V, and nTi mini-implants by torque test, and to evaluate both the surface morphology and the fracture surface characteristics of them by SEM. Torque test results showed significant increase in the maximum torque resistance of nTi mini-implants when compared to cpTi mini-implants, and no statistical difference between Ti-6Al-4V and nTi mini-implants. SEM analysis demonstrated smooth surface morphology and transgranular fracture aspect for nTi mini-implants. Since nanostructured titanium mini-implants have mechanical properties comparable to titanium alloy mini-implants, and biocompatibility comparable to commercially pure titanium mini-implants, it is suggestive that nanostructured titanium can replace Ti-6Al-4V alloy as the material base for mini-implants., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
