1. 'Getting Control of Corona Takes Many Angles': Covid-19 Vaccine Knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs among Refugee/Immigrant/Migrant Communities in Four Us Cities

Abstract

The objectives of the study were to (i) document refugee, immigrant and migrant (RIM) communities' knowledge, attitudes and beliefs (KABs) related to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine and (ii) identify best practices for developing and disseminating culturally and linguistically responsive health messaging addressing those KABs. Thirteen online focus groups (OFGs) in 10 languages were conducted. Each OFG was conducted in the participants' native language. OFGs were recorded, transcribed, translated and uploaded to qualitative software for coding. A thematic analysis was conducted. Results suggest that while there was some variation between different language groups (e.g. whether religious leaders were seen as trusted sources of information about COVID), there were also important commonalities. Most language groups: (i) alluded to hearing about or having gaps in knowledge about COVID-19/the COVID-19 vaccine; (ii) reported hearing negative or conflicting stories about the vaccine; and (iii) shared concerns about the negative side effects of the vaccine. There continues to be a need for health messaging in RIM communities that is culturally and linguistically concordant and follows health literacy guidelines. Message content about the COVID-19 vaccine should focus on vaccine importance, effectiveness and safety, should be multimodal and should be primarily delivered by healthcare professionals and community members who have already been vaccinated.

Abstract

We report a cross-sectional study of 48 men, 56 premenopausal women, and 80 postmenopausal women who were of three ethnic/regional backgrounds: southern European (Greek, Italian), eastern European (Jewish, Polish, Hungarian), and western European (French, British). We determined bone mineral density (BMD) at four skeletal sites and assessed the vitamin D receptor (VDR) genotype by the Bsml restriction site polymorphism. Age and body mass index had significant effects on BMD by multiple regression analysis. In addition, ethnic/regional group had a significant effect on spinal BMD in premenopausal females (P = 0.014) and in males (P = 0.039). However, VDR genotype had no significant effect on BMD in any of the three study groups.

Abstract

Full-fat soy (S), and other full-fat soy-whole egg (SE), soy-egg yolk (SEY) and soy-egg white (SEW) flours were produced and utilized as 12% supplements for patent wheat flour in breads. Addition of 0.5% sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate (SSL) improved loaf volumes of all bread types except SEY. Generally, 30 or 45 ppm bromate supplementation also resulted in increased loaf volumes. Organoleptic evaluations of bread types indicate that 100% wheat flour and SEY supplemented loaves scored well in most quality characteristics. Protein efficiency ratio analyses showed that all S and soy-egg fortified breads produced better growth than 100% wheat flour bread. The results indicate that supplementation of breads with SEY flour produces breads of good quality without the need for SSL or bromate.

Abstract

The authors introduce the tight-binding (SSH) model of polyacene, and derive a critical value of the electron-phonon coupling constant for which they expect bond alternation to occur in the ground state. They then discuss the effect of Coulomb interactions and show that in mean-field theory the ground state of an infinite chain of polyacene is expected to be antiferromagnetic. Going beyond mean-field theory they make a variational calculation of the ground state of polyacene, and show that, in contrast with the mean-field theories, polyacene should show bond alternation with an energy gap due both to this and to correlations. It appears that it is necessary to take careful account of the Coulomb interactions between the pi -electrons.

Abstract

Full fat soy (S), 85% soy + 15% whole egg (85S) and 75% soy + 25% egg (75S) flours were produced and evaluated both nutritionally and as a 12% flour supplement in wheat breads. Dehulled, blanched, wet milled soybeans and whole eggs were mixed, drum dried, and milled to produce 85S and 75S flours. Nutrient analyses indicated increased fat, pantothenic acid, calcium, and sodium contents in egg flours. Although protein content decreased with egg addition as compared to S, NPR and PER analyses showed increases in protein quality. 12% S bread resulted in a depressed loaf volume as compared to 85S, 75S, and 100% wheat breads. The addition of 0.5% sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate increased loaf volumes of 100% wheat and S, but not 85S or 75S bread.
