Optical metasurfaces of subwavelength pillars have provided new capabilities for the versatile definition of the amplitude, phase, and polarization of light. In this work, we demonstrate that an efficient dielectric metasurface lens can be used to trap and image single neutral atoms with a long working distance from the lens of 3 mm. We characterize the high-numerical-aperture optical tweezers using the trapped atoms and compare with numerical computations of the metasurface lens performance. Although ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are relatively uncommon disorders, most primary care practices include a number of individuals with these diagnoses. Much of the initial evaluation and long-term care of these patients is managed or coordinated by their primary care physicians. A familiarity with current principles of diagnosis and treatment is essential. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are related, immunologically mediated disorders of unknown cause. Both are characterized by chronic relapsing courses, frequent need for surgical intervention, and increased colorectal cancer risk. Significant differences are seen between these two inflammatory bowel disease syndromes, in their histopathologic features, clinical manifestations, and response to treatment. This review focuses on the colorectal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease, emphasizing clinical presentation, approach to diagnosis, medical and surgical management, and long-term prognosis.

When sweat glands isolated from samples of horse skin were explanted and cultured under favourable conditions, they could exhibit cellular outgrowth. This growth could be maintained for 2–4 weeks and these primary cultures were then disaggregated and the resultant cell suspensions used to initiate epithelial cell lines. Secretion from intact equine sweat glands is regulated by β 2-adrenoceptors and appears to be mediated by cyclic AMP, but there is evidence that calcium may also play a role. Adrenaline could increase the cyclic AMP content of the cultured cells and this response was mediated by 2-adrenoceptors. Adrenaline was also able to evoke a small increase in intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) but the pharmacology of this response remains obscure. Adrenaline thus activates at least two potentially important second-messenger signalling pathways which have the capacity to interact, because adrenaline-evoked cyclic AMP formation was inhibited if [Ca2+]i was raised with ionomycin. The chloride permeability of mammalian epithelial cells characteristically rises during secretion, and adrenaline could increase chloride permeability in the cultured epithelia but the cells did not contain cyclic-AMP-dependent chloride channels and so this response was mediated by [Ca2+]i.

There is significant evidence for genetic factors in the susceptibility to anorexia nervosa (AN). Previously genetic variation in the estrogen receptor 2 gene (ESR2) has been studied, however no strong evidence of association with AN has been found. In the present study variation in the estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) and ESR2 genes was examined. Estrogen receptors have been localised to areas of the brain involved in behaviour and regulation of food intake. The anorexic effects of estrogen are accentuated by stress and thus it is postulated that variation in the estrogen receptors may contribute to the genetic susceptibility to AN in females. A cohort of 170 female, Caucasian AN sufferers and 152 female controls were typed for dinucleotide repeat polymorphisms in both ESR1 and ESR2 and two further SNPs at each locus. Variation at ESR1 was not associated with AN. However an association was found at the ESR2 locus with the heterozygous genotype of the G1082A polymorphism and AN but not with any of the other ESR2 polymorphisms analysed. Analysis of haplotypes at ESR1 and ESR2 showed no significant evidence of association with AN suggesting that the variability in ESR2 alone may contribute to the genetic susceptibility to AN.
