Abstract

Immunoglobulin M seroconversion to Ehrlichia chaffeensis was documented in U.S. citizens bitten by ticks in Sardinia. Seven cases of suspected ehrlichiosis in local residents were not confirmed by laboratory tests. In Alpine areas antibodies to E. phagocytophila were detected in persons at high risk, i.e., foresters (8.6%) and hunters (5.5%), and in controls (l.5%). Of 153 persons bitten by ticks, only one was Ehrlichia antibody-positive after 6 months.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES To describe the X/Y shaped periorbital reconstruction technique following enucleation or exenteration in dogs and cats and to evaluate its cosmetic and functional results. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records of dogs and cats from two different institutions that required enucleation or exenteration, followed by an additional X or Y plasty using fibrous periorbital tissue for cosmetic reasons, were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were evaluated clinically at 1-2 weeks, 2 months and 6 months. The eyelid sinking was scored as absent or present. RESULTS Nineteen dogs and five cats were included in the study. Twelve dogs and three cats had an enucleation, while the remaining seven dogs and two cats underwent exenteration. In the short-term follow up, three patients had periorbital oedema. Sixty days and 6 months post-surgery, two cats and two dogs showed eyelid depression. These two dogs were both dolichocephalic breeds. The rest of the patients showed no eyelid sinking, while the periorbital oedema observed in the short-term follow up in the two dogs and one cat had completely resolved. The four patients with ocular neoplasia did not have the 6 months follow up, because of fatal metastatic disease or euthanasia. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The X/Y periorbital reconstructive procedure is quick, easy to perform and it provided satisfying long-term cosmetic results, except for four cases that developed eyelid depression.

Abstract

BackgroundSystemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by a wide autoantibodies production. The traditionally concept of a B-cell driven disease has been changed in the last years due to the evidence demonstrating the crucial role of T cells in SLE pathogenesis. In particular, regulatory (Treg) and memory T cells seem act through co-stimulatory and co-inhibitory molecules, such as CD137, PD1-1 and CTLA4. The over-expression of this molecules on lymphocytes may contribute to immune system dysregulation.ObjectivesThe primary objective of the present case-control study was to evaluate the expression of CD137, PD1-1 and CTLA4 on T cell surface of SLE patients by using flow-cytometry. Secondly, we evaluated the percentage of Treg and memory T cells.MethodsWe enrolled patients SLE patients (2019 ACR/EULAR criteria) and sex/age-matched healthy subjects (HS). Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected in a standardized computerized electronically filled form. Disease activity was assessed by SLEDAI-2k. Each subject underwent peripheral blood sample collection. By using flow-cytometry we evaluated the expression of FOXP3, CD137, PD1-1 and CTLA4, CD45, CD25, CCR7 to determine the percentage of Treg and memory T cells.ResultsThe present analysis included 21 SLE patients [M/F 1/20 median age 48 years (IQR 17), median disease duration 144 months (IQR 204)]. The Treg percentage was significantly lower in SLE compared to HS [median 4.2 (IQR 0.32) versus 2.5 (IQR 2.44); p=0.001, Figure 1A]. Moving on effector Treg (eTreg), SLE patients with high disease activity (SLEDAI > 4) showed a significantly higher prevalence for these cells compared to patients with SLEDAI ≤ 4 [1.16 (IQR 0.51) versus 0.53 (IQR 0.8), p=0.014, Figure 1B]. Moreover, inverse correlation was found between eTreg percentage and SLEDAI-2k [p=0.029, r=-0.47 (CI 0.75 – 0.04) Figure 1C]. The evaluation of CD137 expression was significantly higher in SLE patients compared to HS on CD3+ cells [median 5.32 (IQR 6.11) versus 3.3 (IQR 1.7), p=0.001, Figure 1F]. On CD4+ cells, CD137 expression positively correlated with disease activity [p=0.0082, r=0.58 (CI 0.15-0.82)]. Finally, when analysing memory T cells subpopulations, inverse correlation has been found between effector memory T cells (TEM, CD45RA-CCR7-) and SLEDAI-2k when considering CD3+ [p=0.029, r=-0.56 (CI 0.81 – 0.12)] and CD4+ cells [p=0.016, R=-0.54 (CI -0.80 - -0.1)]. Of note, CD137 expression on T central memory cells (TCM, CD45RA-CCR7+) positively correlated with SLEDAI-2k [(p=0.019, r=0.52 (CI 0.09 – 0.79)].Figure 1.A) Comparison of the percentage of Treg in HS and SLE patients. 7. Clinical and functional outcomes of cad/cam mandibular reconstruction with free fibular flap comparing traditional versus micro-invasive intraoral surgical approaches

Abstract

The surgical incision plays a pivotal role in any surgical procedure. A good surgical approach should allow optimal visualization, respect the anatomy and ensure the best aesthetic outcome possible, especially when the lesions involve the face. In this retrospective study, carried out from June 2014 to April 2018, different types of surgical approaches to perform mandibular reconstruction were compared. Twentyone patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction with free fibular flap (FFFs) using CAD-CAM technology and Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) were included in the study, regardless the condition, the timing of reconstruction (primary vs secondary), the number of fibular segments or the type and size of the mandibular defect. The patients were treated for mandibular defects secondary to benign or low-grade oncological lesions and different non-oncological conditions. However, patients requiring neck dissection were excluded from the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the type of surgical approach used: 7 patients received a traditional transcervical approach together with an intraoral approach, while 14 patients were operated through an intraoral approach combined with different microinvasive approaches, including the sub-mandibular, the retro-mandibular and the preauricular approaches. Different factors were statistically compared: characteristics of the harvested fibula, surgical timing, days of hospitalization, as well as complication, functional and aesthetic outcomes. According to this study, no statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in any of the features considered. These results support the hypothesis that the combination of different microinvasive approaches and the traditional approach are superimposable, and they can be safely exchanged when the underlying defects allow it.

Abstract

Over ten million tonnes of solid residues are generated yearly from coffee agro-industry worldwide, along with larger amounts of wastewaters and cultivation residues. Both wastewaters and solid residues, such as defective coffee beans and spent coffee grounds, along with coffee husks (pulp and mucilage) that constitute around 60% of the wet weight of the fresh fruit, represent a relevant source of pollution and environmental threat, particularly from the widely adopted wet processing of coffee berries. Several attempts have been done to re-use the coffee processing solid residues, which include direct use as fuel in farms, animal feed, fermentation studies, adsorption studies, biodiesel production, briquetting, pelletizing, tannin extraction and production of specialty commodities. For the re-use of wastewaters, biogas production and direct delivery on plantations have been proposed or adopted, along with the treatment through infiltration, irrigation or (anaerobic) lagooning, reed bed and aerobic lagooning. In this study, the possible alternatives for the re-use and valorisation of the coffee processing and plantation are critically reviewed, taking into account the experiences with other agro-industrial residues and wastewaters, in the frame of a sustainable agro-industrial development.

Abstract

Forty years after the discovery of the helix nature of DNA and more than twenty after the first applications of recombinant DNA technology to the pharmaceutical industry, the Pandora's vase of biotechnology seems far from being empty. New products for agriculture and the food industry are constantly being placed on the market, and powerful monitoring techniques have been developed to track non-modified and genetically modified vaccines, viruses, microbes and plants released into the environment. Molecular approaches for taxonomic purposes, which might also be useful for quality control and assurance, have been successfully developed and used for taxonomic purposes in the last decade for both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including yeasts and filamentous fungi. Mycorrhizae are one example of a traditional biotechnology that can greatly benefit from the latest molecular approaches. These universal symbioses between soil fungi and plant roots playa central role in most of the naturaland agricultural ecosystems in such key processes as nutrient cycling, soil structural conservation and plant health. For these reasons, mycorrhizae have been successfully used to improve the quality of forest and agricultural seedlings, to produce high-quality micropropagated plants and to increase the production of edible mushrooms of high economic value, such as truffles. However, although controlled inoculation of oak and hazel seedlings with ectomycorrhizal truffles has been carried out for decades in France and Italy, and is still expanding commercially, several technological gaps remain to be filled.

Abstract

Detectors with a p-i-n structure based on Liquid Encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) grown Semi-Insulating (SI) GaAs have been fabricated. The current-voltage ( I – V ) characteristics and their response to γ-rays have been studied. Measurements of the peak charge collection efficiency (cce) have been compared with a model assuming a uniform electric field. The comparison indicates that this field is not uniform. The peak cce at 500 V is found to be 52% and 82% in 400 μm and 200 μm thick detectors respectively. The resolution of the 57 Co full energy peak is between 10% and 13% at 400 V.

Abstract

From 1987 to 1991, a seroepidemiologic survey for antibodies to hantaviruses, leptospira, rickettsiae, and Borrelia was conducted in selected Italian population groups. In the mountainous areas of northeastern Italy, the prevalence of antibody to hantaviruses, as detected by indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) assay, was 7.1%, 4.8%, 4.3%, and 4% in 265 forestry workers, 82 rangers, 395 farmers, and 75 hunters, respectively. Among 299 Alpine soldiers, the prevalence was lower (0.7%). Of those with Hantaan antibody, the reactivity pattern using Hantaan, Puumala, and Fojnica viruses suggested a prevalence of antibody to Hantaan virus, with titers reaching levels of 128. The presence of leptospiral antibodies (by microagglutination test), which included the prevalence of antibodies to Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae, L. bratislava, and L. saxkoening serotypes, was observed in 10-12% of the farmers and forestry workers in these Alpine mountain regions. Only a few sporadic clinical cases of leptospirosis have been reported from these regions. Antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi (by IFA) were observed in 19% of the rangers and forestry workers, with lower values in farmers (10%) and hunters (8%). These data suggest the presence of a large number of asymptomatic infections with B. burgdorferi and the leptospires in the densely wooded areas of the Alpine Italian regions. Furthermore, the recent identification of a case of Hantaan acute nephropathy in a man living in the mountainous northeastern area of Italy confirms the presence of hantavirus in the Italian Alpine zones, especially those near the Slovenian border.

We report on progress with Schottky diode and p-i-n diode GaAs detectors for minimum ionising particles. The radiation hardness and potential speed of simple diodes is shown to be more than competitive with silicon detector. A discussion is given of the present understanding of the charge transport mechanism in the detectors since it influences their charge collection efficiency. Early results from microstrip detectors are also described.

Abstract

A fully compensating uranium—scintillator calorimeter was constructed for the ZEUS detector at HERA. Several of the barrel calorimeter modules were subjected to beam tests at Fermilab before shipping them to DESY for installation. The calibrations of the modules used beams of electrons and hadrons, measuring the uniformity of the response, and checking the resolution. The runs also provided opportunity to test a large fraction of the actual ZEUS calorimeter readout system in an integrated beam environment more than one year before HERA turn on. The experiment utilized two computer controlled mechanical structures, one of which was capable of holding up to four modules in order to study shower containment, and a magnetic spectrometer with a high resolution beam tracking system. During two running periods, beams of 6 to 110 GeV containing e, μ, π, and p were used. The results show energy resolutions of 35%/ E for hadrons and 19%/ E for electrons, uniformities at the 1% level, energy nonlinearity less than 1%, and equal response for electrons and hadrons.

Abstract

Background. It is unclear whether the extent of duodenal gastric metaplasia is due to Helicobacter pylori and/or acid. Aims. To investigate the role of Helicobacter pylori eradication in the regression of duodenal gastric metaplasia in patients with duodenal ulcer maintained in acid suppression conditions. Methods. Duodenal (anterior, superior, inferior walls of first part of duodenum) and gastric antrum biopsies were obtained from 44 Helicobacter pylori positive duodenal ulcer patients. Helicobacter pylori infection was diagnosed by rapid urease test, histology and 13C-Urea Breath Test. Patients were treated with 20 mg omeprazole tid associated with 250 mg clarithromycin and 500 mg amoxycillin four times daily for 10 days and maintained with 20 mg omeprazole daily for 18 weeks. Control endoscopies were performed at 6 and 18 weeks after beginning treatment. Results. Duodenal gastric metaplasia regression was observed in all ( 32 32 ) patients in whom Helicobacter pylori was eradicated, but in only 3 out of 6 patients in whom eradication was not achieved (p Conclusions. The present results suggest that Helicobacter pylori eradication associated with prolonged acid suppression may represent a good therapeutic strategy to achieve duodenal gastric metaplasia regression and highlight the combined role of acid and Helicobacter pylori in the pathogenesis of duodenal gastric metaplasia.

Abstract

Immunoglobulin M seroconversion to Ehrlichia chaffeensis was documented in U.S. citizens bitten by ticks in Sardinia. Seven cases of suspected ehrlichiosis in local residents were not confirmed by laboratory tests. In Alpine areas antibodies to E. phagocytophila were detected in persons at high risk, i.e., foresters (8.6%) and hunters (5.5%), and in controls (1.5%). Of 153 persons bitten by ticks, only one was Ehrlichia antibody-positive after 6 months.

Photon proton cross sections for elastic light vector meson production, σel νp, inelastic diffractive production, σnd νp, non-diffractive production, σd νp, as well as the total cross section, σtot νp, have been measured at an average υp center of mass energy of 180 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Abstract

The availability of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against functional or phenotypic cell markers can improve the suitability of flow cytometry (FCM) in assessing and validating prognostic parameters of human neoplasia. The major problems encountered in this type of study, when performed on solid tumors, are the recovery of a large and representative number of tumor cells and the possibility of performing a DNA analysis on antigen-selected populations. A panel of MAbs was chosen on the basis of the recognized membrane antigens important to the biologic characterization of human breast cancer cell populations. The possibility of performing bivariate FCM analysis of cell surface antigens and DNA content was investigated on 4 breast tumor cell lines and 10 fresh breast biopsies. Different fixations and tumor disaggregation procedures were considered. The results indicate that ethanol fixation is the most effective procedure for performing biparametric FCM analysis and that a combined enzymatic-mechanical disaggregation procedure applied on breast tumor specimens allows great recovery of intact cells without affecting antigen detection or DNA distribution.

Abstract

This paper presents our first measurement of the F 2 structure function in neutral-current, deep inelastic scattering using the ZEUS detector at HERA, the ep colliding beam facility at DESY. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 24.7 nb −1 . Results are presented for data in range of Q 2 from 10 GeV 2 to 4700 GeV 2 and Bjorken x down to 3.0 × 10 −4 . The F 2 structure function increases rapidly as x decreases.

Abstract

This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb−, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e−γ, νW− or e−Z0. Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle eγ Compton scattering process.

Progress on the development of GaAs solid state detectors is presented. 80% charge collection efficiency has been achieved, and double sided detectors with metal rectifying contacts have been tested. Measurements of capacitance and tests with SEM are giving more information on the behaviour of these devices.

Abstract

Abstract Background Non-invasive delivery of nebulized surfactant has been a neonatology long-pursued goal. Nevertheless, the clinical efficacy of nebulized surfactant remains inconclusive, in part, due to the great technical challenges of depositing nebulized drugs in the lungs of preterm infants. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of delivering nebulized surfactant (poractant alfa) in vitro and in vivo with an adapted, neonate-tailored aerosol delivery strategy. Methods Particle size distribution of undiluted poractant alfa aerosols generated by a customized eFlow-Neos nebulizer system was determined by laser diffraction. The theoretical nebulized surfactant lung dose was estimated in vitro in a clinical setting replica including a neonatal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) circuit, a cast of the upper airways of a preterm neonate, and a breath simulator programmed with the tidal breathing pattern of an infant with mild respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). A dose-response study with nebulized surfactant covering the 100–600 mg/kg nominal dose-range was conducted in RDS-modelling, lung-lavaged spontaneously-breathing rabbits managed with nasal CPAP. The effects of nebulized poractant alfa on arterial gas exchange and lung mechanics were assessed. Exogenous alveolar disaturated-phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) in the lungs was measured as a proxy of surfactant deposition efficacy. Results Laser diffraction studies demonstrated suitable aerosol characteristics for inhalation (mass median diameter, MMD = 3 μm). The mean surfactant lung dose determined in vitro was 13.7% ± 4.0 of the 200 mg/kg nominal dose. Nebulized surfactant delivered to spontaneously-breathing rabbits during nasal CPAP significantly improved arterial oxygenation compared to animals receiving CPAP only. Particularly, the groups of animals treated with 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of nebulized poractant alfa achieved an equivalent pulmonary response in terms of oxygenation and lung mechanics as the group of animals treated with instilled surfactant (200 mg/kg). Conclusions The customized eFlow-Neos vibrating-membrane nebulizer system efficiently generated respirable aerosols of undiluted poractant alfa. Nebulized surfactant delivered at doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg elicited a pulmonary response equivalent to that observed after treatment with an intratracheal surfactant bolus of 200 mg/kg. This bench-characterized nebulized surfactant delivery strategy is now under evaluation in Phase II clinical trial (EUDRACT No.:2016–004547-36).

Abstract

Microstrip detectors have been constructed from gallium arsenide (GaAs) wafers made from undoped LEC (liquid-encapsulated Czochralski) semi-insulating substrate material. Tests were performed using minimum ionising particles to ascertain their properties as charged particle detectors. The results show that the devices work wellm, with good signal-to-noise ratio (typically 7). The effects of gamma ray and neutron irradiation have been studied and shown to be small up to levels exceeding 20 Mrad and 1014 n/cm2, respectively.

Abstract

Chemotherapy has made a fundamental contribution to the treatment of childhood cancer and has led to a marked increase in the cure rate of most of these diseases. The antineoplastic drugs currently used in clinical practice exert their cytotoxic effect by interfering with the synthesis or function of DNA. Figure 1 indicates schematically the site of action of commonly used anticancer drugs in paediatric oncology. Most of these drugs are cell-cycle specific, i.e. they are active only in a given phase of the cell cycle.

Abstract

The purification of the IgM monoclonal antibody 436 against a breast tumor antigen from mouse ascitic fluid is reported. The purified immunoglobulin was radioiodinated and the resulting product assessed for its binding capacity and binding specificity. Purified IgM-436 served for F(ab') 2μpreparation which was tested for its antigen binding capacity. Radioiodinated IgM-436 and its F(ab')2μ retained their immunological activity which was never lower than those of the corresponding cold products.

Abstract

Progress in the development of detectors based on semi‐insulating GaAs for experiments at future hadron colliders is presented. Effects of neutron and gamma irradiation at the levels of 1014 ncm−2 and 20 MRad respectively, have been shown to be small. Testbeam studies have shown that microstrip detectors can detect minimum ionizing particles with a good signal to noise ratio despite having low charge collection efficiencies. The problem of charge loss in the detectors is now better understood and new detectors have shown improved charge collection efficiencies.

Abstract

A study of hantaviral and leptospiral antibodies in selected population groups was performed. Among high risk subjects in the Rome area, Hantaan antibody was found in mammalogists (10%) and dialysis patients (6%), while none of the trappers, oarsmen, river policemen and firemen studied tested positive for antibodies to hantaviruses. In occupationally-exposed subjects (farmers, rangers, lumbermen, hunters) from rural and densely forested areas of northern Italian regions, the prevalence of Hantaan antibody ranged from 3.3% to 8.8%. In the positive cases the comparative antibody titration using different hantaviruses showed a predominance of Hantaan virus (titer 1:128) compared to Puumala virus (titer 1:32); no reactivity was observed with Seoul or Prospect Hill viruses. In Rome, leptospiral antibodies were found in trappers (21%) and oarsmen (5%) at a titer of 1:50 or more, with a predominance for the L. icterohaemorrhagiae serotype (85%). In the Alpine areas the leptospiral antibody prevalence was 12% and L. icterohaemorrhagiae and L. bratislava were the predominant serotypes. The presence of hantavirus infections, suspected after the first epidemiological survey conducted in central Italy, is now supported by the new data obtained in northern Italian regions. Furthermore, the recent observation of one case of Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) in the Udine area, not far from the Yugoslavian border, strongly confirms the presence of one or more hantaviruses in Italy.

Abstract

Over the last two years the Glasgow and CERN-based LAA groups have successfully constructed GaAs detectors for minimum ionising particles with radiation hardness and potential speed which is more than competitive with silicon detectors. The timely development of this new technology, in particular for high radiation regions of LHC detectors near the beam pipe and in the forward region, now requires the investment of more resources and more intensive effort, including industrial collaboration in detector fabrication. In addition, there is an urgent need for the development of appropriate read-out electronics with radiation tolerance and speed characteristics to match the detectors, and with the lowest possible power consumption, needed for the large number of channels required in a vertex detector, for example. The present report describes the results obtained using GaAs Schottky diode detectors which we have constructed, and the initial steps which we have taken towards the design of a GaAs preamplifier to match the detectors.

Abstract

The contract regulating labour employment by capitalist firms usually embodies three basic elements: a fixed money wage rate per unit of time, the subjection of workers to the employer’s authority in the workplace and the short-term nature of the hiring commitment. Explicit or implicit departures from this standard can be observed; they are the result of individual or collective negotiations in the labour market, which balance out their advantages and disadvantages for each party, either directly or through accompanying changes in other parameters of the labour contract. Government legislation and economic policy set limits or fix actual values for some of these parameters and stipulations; within these bounds the market determines the rest.

In the Marxist-Leninist project of socialist economy the elimination of cycles in economic activity is the expected result of central planning replacing the ‘anarchy’ of capitalist markets. Ex-ante coordination of the activities of government, households and firms according to a consistent, feasible and efficient plan should, in principle, ensure the continued full employment of labour and other resources along smooth growth paths instead of the recurring bouts of booms and recessions and persistent unemployment characteristic of capitalism.
