The article describes the activities of Alexander Nikolaevich Glagolev, a Crimean artist who was the most prominent figure in the ideological field of the fine arts of the Crimean ASSR. Working first as an artist, and then as head of the illustration department of the newspaper «Red Crimea», he made every possible effort to implement state policy in all spheres of artistic life in Crimea. Since 1929, he has been developing an unprecedented activity for Crimea, hoping to «wrest artists from the state of dead apoliticality and switch them to serving the interests of the revolutionary proletariat», while educating a generation of young, ideologically literate artists. As the main platform for the implementation of his plans, A. N. Glagolev uses the newspaper «Red Crimea», on the pages of which not only his illustrations and cartoons appear, but also fairly large articles urging artists and photographers to be closer to socialist construction. His merits include the organization of an art exhibition dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Sovietization of Crimea, the First All-Crimean Exhibition of Amateur Art, as well as an exhibition of professional and amateur artists in the Moscow State Museum of Oriental Cultures «Art of the Soviet Crimea». A. N. Glagolev was the founder and chairman of the Crimean Society of Revolutionary Artists «Izofront». He tried to provide support to representatives of amateur and national art.

Introduction. The Steppe Viper (Vipera renardi (Cristoph, 1861)) is listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine and protected in Ukraine according to Berne Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats. The population of the species in Ukraine had decreased during the last decades, its northern range border had shifted to the south. The Steppe Viper has been didn’t find was not recorded in Cherkasy Oblast during the last 90 years. Purpose. The aim of the present study was to present data on current distribution of the Steppe Viper on the left bank of the Dnieper in Cherkasy Oblast and to put it into context of distribution of this species in Ukraine. Methods. Materials has been collected during 2014-2019 in Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine, in the forest-steppe zone. Results. Steppe viper has been found in two localities: in Zolotonosha Rajon near vil. Khvylovo-Sorochyn one Steppe Viper was observed 05.07.2015 and four specimens were seen 23.04.2019. In addition, two snakes were found and reported on Facebook by user Viktor Oleksenko. Snakes were observed 23.06.2014 near vil. Vilkhy (Zolotonosha Rajon, Cherkasy Oblast). In all cases snakes were observed on open places with herbaceous plants near glades or at the edge of a mixed pine-oak forest, situated on the Dnieper left bank sandy terrace at the place of its’ confluence with Zolotonoshka river. These habitats are not typical for this species in Southern Ukraine, within Steppe zone. Similar isolated populations of the Steppe Viper are existing in other regions of Ukrainian Forest Steppe: Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Kyiv. Conclusion. Our research confirms presence of small isolated populations of the Steppe Viper in the Ukrainian Forest Steppe, on the Dnieper’s left bank. Habitats along the large river valleys have an important role for conservation this species in Forest steppe.

Introduction. Caspian Gull ( Larus cachinnans ) has started the expansion upstream the Dnieper after creation of the tandem reservoir system. This species began breeding at Kremenchuk reservoir in 1987. From 1990s new colonies were founded and number of the species increased. This tendency now continues. There were 1940-1990 pairs of this gull breeding in 6 colonies at Kremenchuk reservoir in 2015 according to our estimation. Purpose. Reevaluation of Caspian Gull ’s number at Kremenchuk reservoir. Methods. Inspection of territories suitable for breeding of Caspian Gull . Total count of nests in a colony. Results. New colony of the Caspian Gull was founded in 2017 near the Kremenchuk Hydroelectric power station . It situated at a concrete dam near the station. The dam has length 2 . 06 km and no plants. The colony is situated near the end of the dam and extending to 0.8 km. There were 750 pairs of Caspian Gulls breeding there in 2018. Gulls started breeding at this place at the beginning of 2000s. This breeding place is similar to colonies near the Kaniv and the Kyiv Hydroelectric power stations . The colony was founded due to expansion of the Caspian Gull on the Dnieper. We observed 5 birds with rings from another colonies at the Kremenchuk reservoir. Conclusion. Our new data allow overestimate the number of Caspian Gull at Kremenchuk reservoir approximately in 3000 pairs. It is the biggest population of this gull on the Dnieper river.
