The work is focused on welding of fine-grained ultra-high-strength steel S960MC by laser beam welding and electron beam welding technologies. For a given type of steel, when the heat input is exceeded, the mechanical properties of welded joints will deteriorate. As a result, using beam welding technologies to limit the amount of heat input is recommended. Several butt welds were made, and mechanical tests and macroscopic analyses were performed to determine the impact of welding parameters on mechanical properties. Using beam welding technologies, the value of heat input was reduced by up to 73% compared to gas metal arc welding. When compared to a gas metal arc welded joint, the width of the soft zone was reduced by 69 to 79%. This resulted in a considerable reduction in the width of the soft zone, which was reflected in a 24% increase in yield strength and a 23% increase in tensile strength compared to gas metal arc welding.

The application of hardfacing is one of the ways to restore the functional properties of worn elements. The possibility of using filler materials rich in chrome allows for better wear resistance than base materials used so far. The paper presents the results of research on the use of 3 different grades of covered electrodes for the regeneration of worn track staves. The content of the carbon in the covered electrodes was from 0,5% to 7% and the chromium from 5% to 33%. The microscopic and hardness tests revealed large differences in the structure and properties of the welds. The differences in the hardness of the welds between the materials used were up to 150 HV units. The difference in wear resistance, in the ASTM G65 test, between the best and worst materials was almost 12 times big.

This research is focused on the analysis of heat-affected sub-zones in 2 mm thick steel S960MC samples, with the aim of observing and evaluating the mechanical properties after exposure to temperatures corresponding to individual heat-affected sub-zones. Test samples were prepared using a Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical simulator. The samples were heated in the range from 550°C to 1350°C and were subsequently quickly cooled. The specimens, together with the base material, were then subjected to tensile testing, impact testing, and micro-hardness measurements in the sample cross-section, as well as evaluation of their microstructure. Fracture surfaces are investigated in samples after impact testing. The heat-affected sub-zones studied indicate high sensitivity to the thermal input of welding. There is a significant decrease in tensile strength and yield strength at temperatures around 550°C.

Materials based on cast irons are often used for protection against wear. One of the methods of creating protective surface with cast iron structures is hardfacing. The application of hardfacing with self shielded flux cored wire with high carbon content is one of the economical ways often used to protect machinery parts exposed to both abrasion and erosion. The wear resistance of hardfacings depends on their chemical composition, structure obtained after hardfacing, parameters of depositing process and specific conditions of wear. As the base material in the investigation the steel grade S235JR was used. The wear behavior mechanism of hardfacings made with one type of self shielded flux cored wire and different process parameters were evaluated in this paper. Structures obtained in deposition process were different in hardness, amount of carbides and resistance to wear with two investigated impingement angles. The erosion tests showed that impingement angle 30° gives lower erosion rate than angle 60°.

The main goal of the article is to identify artificially created defects like lack of fusion and incomplete penetration in butt weld joint using non-destructive volumetric methods. These defects are the most serious defects in welds of steel constructions from the safety point of view. For identification, an ultrasonic phased array technique and a conventional X-ray using digital imaging were used. The theoretical part of the article describes the current state of the given issue and provides basic theoretical knowledge about ultrasonic and X-ray welding tests. In the experimental part, the procedure and results of testing butt weld joint are described by both non-destructive methods. The butt weld joint was made from steel S420MC. Each indication obtained by the ultrasonic and x-ray technique is supplemented by the macrostructure of the weld taken from the indication position. The results of the experimental work mentioned in the article point to the possibility and reliability of the identification of melting defects by selected nondestructive methods in terms of their character and orientation.

Internal casting defects that are detected by radiography may also be detected by ultrasonic method. Ultrasonic testing allows investigation of the cross-sectional area of a casting, it is considered to be a volumetric inspection method. The high frequency acoustic energy travels through the casting until it hits the opposite surface or an interface or defect. The interface or defect reflects portions of the energy, which are collected in a receiving unit and displayed for the analyst to view. The pattern of the energy deflection can indicate internal defect. Ultrasonic casting testing is very complicated in practice. The complications are mainly due to the coarse-grain structure of the casting that causes a high ultrasound attenuation. High attenuation then makes it impossible to test the entire volume of material. This article is focused on measurement of attenuation, the effect of probe frequency on attenuation and testing results.

Fine-grained high-strength low-alloyed (HSLA) steels are used for their advantageous combination of mechanical properties such as high yield strength, tensile strength, ductility, and good formability. These properties are mainly based on applied grain boundary strengthening, which as the only strengthening mechanism allows for the yield strength to increase without a decrease in ductility. Therefore, any changes in grain size lead to irreversible changes in material properties. Such changes also occur during welding in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), where there is a significant change in austenitic grain. In coarse-grain HAZ, this leads to a decrease in yield strength, ductility, toughness, and fatigue strength. The paper experimentally determines the growth kinetics of austenitic grain for fine-grained HSLA steel S960MC. As a result, the values of the activation energy required for grain growth Q and the proportional constant K 0 are determined. Knowing these values is important for numerical predictions of austenitic grain size in the HAZ. Based on these predictions, the changes in yield strength, ductility, toughness, and fatigue strength can be estimated.

High-strength steels are used more than general structural steel due to their combination of properties such as high strength, good toughness and weldability. They are mainly used in the manufacture of heavy vehicles for the mining industry, cranes, transportation, etc. However, welding these grades of steel brings new challenges. Also, a simulation for welding high-strength steel is required more often. To insert a material database into the simulation program, it is necessary to conduct investigations using CCT (Continuous Cooling Transformation) diagrams, welded joints research, and more. To investigate the behavior of S960MC steel during heating and cooling, we used dilatometry analysis supported by EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) analysis. A CCT diagram was constructed. The transformation temperatures of A c1 and A c3 increase with increasing heating rate. The A c1 temperature increased by 54 °C and the A c3 temperatures by 24 °C as the heating rate increased from 0.1 °C/s to 250 °C/s. The austenite decomposition temperatures have a decreasing trend in the cooling phase with increasing cooling rate. As the cooling rate changes from 0.03 °C/s to 100 °C/s, the initial transformation temperature drops from 813 °C to 465 °C. An increase in the cooling rate means a higher proportion of bainite and martensite. At the same time, the hardness increases from 119 HV10 to 362 HV10.

In this paper, the experimental investigation results of the bead sequence input on geometry, structure, and hardness of surfaced layers after multi-pass weld surfacing are analyzed. Three S355 steel plates surfaced by GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) were tested with three different combinations of six beads. The geometric, structural, and hardness analysis was carried out in the cross-section of the plates in the middle of the welded layers. The dimensions of padded layers, fusion and heat-affected zone, as well as the individual padded weld were evaluated. On the basis of metallographic samples, qualitative and quantitative structure analysis was performed. Hardness measurements in surfacing welds and heat-affected zones in the tested cross-sections of the surfacing layers were carried out. A comparative analysis of structure and hardness, taking into account the thermal implications of the bead sequence, allowed for the formulation of conclusions. Comparative studies have shown differences in properties between heat-affected zones (HAZ) for individual surfacing sequences. These differences were mainly in the dimensions of the surfacing layers, the share of structural components, as well as the uniformity of hardness distributions. Finally, the most favorable sequence in terms of structure and hardness distribution, maximum hardness, and range of hardness has been indicated.
