Abstract: The stellarator fusion experiment Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is currently under construction at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany. Five normal conducting trim coils have been designed to allow for fine tuning of the main magnetic field during plasma operation. To limit the mechanical stresses in the coil, the proper functioning of the coil cooling system must be carefully monitored. Two independent systems will monitor the coil temperature. In addition, flow monitors in the outlet hydraulic line of each coil will determine if the required cooling water flow is present. The trim coil system will be provided as a part of a collaboration program between the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Wendelstein 7-X project, and is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Abstract: The stellarator fusion experiment Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is currently under construction at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany. The main magnetic field will be provided by a superconducting magnet system which generates a fivefold toroidal periodic magnetic field. However, unavoidable tolerances can result in small deviations of the magnetic field which disturb the toroidal periodicity. In order to have a tool to influence these field errors five additional normal conducting trim coils were designed to allow fine tuning of the main magnetic field during plasma operation. In the frame of an international cooperation the trim coils will be contributed by the US partners. Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory has accomplished several tasks to develop the final design ready for manufacturing e.g. detailed manufacturing design for the winding and for the coil connection area. The design work was accompanied by a detailed analysis of resulting forces and moments to prove the design. The manufacturing of the coils is running at Everson Tesla Inc; the first two coils were received at IPP.

Abstract: The ITER project is considering the inclusion of two sets of in-vessel coils, one to mitigate the effect of Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) and another to provide vertical stabilization (VS). The in-vessel location (behind the blanket shield modules, mounted to the vacuum vessel inner wall) presents special challenges in terms of nuclear radiation (~3000 MGy) and temperature (100oC vessel during operations, 200oC during bakeout). Mineral insulated conductors are well suited to this environment but are not commercially available in the large cross section required. An R&D program is underway to demonstrate the production of mineral insulated (MgO or Spinel) hollow copper conductor with stainless steel jacketing needed for these coils. A preliminary design based on this conductor technology has been developed and is presented herein.

4. Design of JET ELM control coils for operation at 350°C

Abstract: A study has confirmed the feasibility of designing, fabricating and installing resonant magnetic field perturbation (RMP) coils in JET 1 with the objective of controlling edge localized modes (ELM). A system of two rows of in-vessel coils, above the machine midplane, has been chosen as it not only can investigate the physics of and achieve the empirical criteria for ELM suppression, but also permits variation of the spectra allowing for comparison with other experiments. These coils present several engineering challenges. Conditions in JET necessitate the installation of these coils via remote handling, which will impose weight, dimensional and logistical limitations. And while the encased coils are designed to be conventionally wound and bonded, they will not have the usual benefit of active cooling. Accordingly, coil temperatures are expected to reach 350 °C during bakeout as well as during plasma operations. These elevated temperatures are beyond the safe operating limits of conventional OFHC copper and the epoxies that bond and insulate the turns of typical coils. This has necessitated the use of an alternative copper alloy conductor C18150 (CuCrZr). More importantly, an alternative to epoxy had to be found. An R&D program was initiated to find the best available insulating and bonding material. The search included polyimides and ceramic polymers. The scope and status of this R&D program, as well as the critical engineering issues encountered to date are reviewed and discussed.

6. Novel use of water soluble 'Aquapour' as a temporary spacer during coil winding for the NSTX-U centerstack

Abstract: A major facility upgrade to the National Spherical Torus eXperiment (NSTX-U) is currently underway at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). A key component of NSTX-U is the fabrication of a new, higher field centerstack (CS). In order to simultaneously provide robust joints between the inner and outer legs of the Toroidal Field Coils (TF) and minimize radial build, the NSTX-U CS design requires that the Ohmic Heating solenoid (OH) be wound directly on the inner TF bundle. To protect the OH against thermal expansion stress during scenarios where the inner TF bundle is hot but the OH is relatively cool, the completed CS will have a 0.100 inch annular gap between the outer diameter of the TF bundle and the inner diameter of the OH solenoid. “Aquapour”, a proprietary material produced by the Advanced Ceramics Manufacturing Company will be used during manufacture to produce this gap. After the TF bundle is vacuum pressure impregnated and cured, a cylindrical “clam shell” mold will be assembled around it, and a slurry of powdered Aquapour and water will be pumped into the annular space between the mold and TF bundle. Subsequent baking will turn the Aquapour solid, and a protective layer of wet lay-up fiberglass and resin will be added. The OH solenoid will be wound directly on this wet lay-up shell. After vacuum pressure impregnation of the OH, the water soluble Aquapour will be washed away, leaving the required radial clearance between the TF and OH. This paper will describe prototyping and testing of this process, and plans for use on the actual CS fabrication.

Abstract: ITER will incorporate In Vessel Coils (IVCs) as a method of stabilizing “Edge Localized Modes” (ELM) and providing “Vertical Stabilization” (VS). To meet the ELM and VS Coil requirements strong coupling with the plasma is required so that it is necessary for the coils to be installed in the vessel just behind the blanket shield modules. Due to this close proximity to the plasma the radiation and temperature environment is severe and conventional electrical insulation materials and processes cannot be used. The development of mineral insulated conductor technology has been required in the IVC design to deal with this high radiation and high temperature environment. While mineral insulated conductor technology is not new, building a large magnet with high current carrying capability and a conductor diameter larger than the mineral insulated conductor currently manufactured requires R&D and the extension of existing technologies. A 59mm Stainless Steel Jacketed Mineral Insulated Conductor (SSMIC) using MgO is being developed for this application. The IVC ELM and VS coils design includes both the development of the fabrication techniques for the SSMIC and the design and analysis of the ELM and VS Coil assemblies.

Ultimately, these ELM coils must be able to withstand the elevated thermal conditions as well as the structural stresses resulting from electromagnetic loads, which include eddy current and halo current effects. Not only do these loads affect the performance of the coils and cases, but also impact the design of joints, leads, jumpers, and the mounting of the coils to the interior of the vacuum vessel wall. In order to qualify the proposed insulating and bonding materials, prototypical coil samples were built to the design specifications of the proposed JET ELM coils. These samples were impregnated with polyimide then cured. This paper will detail the R&D program, including the results of testing to determine mechanical properties of the polyimide bonded coil samples.

Abstract: The spherical tokamak (ST) is a leading candidate for a Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF) due to its compact size and modular configuration. The National Spherical Torus eXperiment (NSTX) is a MA-class ST facility in the US actively developing the physics basis for an ST-based FNSF. In plasma transport research, ST experiments exhibit a strong (nearly inverse) scaling of normalized confinement with collisionality, and if this trend holds at low collisionality, high fusion neutron fluences could be achievable in very compact ST devices. A major motivation for the NSTX Upgrade (NSTX-U) is to span the next factor of 3–6 reduction in collisionality. To achieve this collisionality reduction with equilibrated profiles, NSTX-U will double the toroidal field, plasma current, and NBI heating power and increase the pulse length from 1–1.5 s to 5–8 s. In the area of stability and advanced scenarios, plasmas with higher aspect ratio and elongation, high β N, and broad current profiles approaching those of an ST-based FNSF have been produced in NSTX using active control of the plasma β and advanced resistive wall mode control. High non-inductive current fractions of 70% have been sustained for many current diffusion times, and the more tangential injection of the 2nd NBI of the Upgrade is projected to increase the NBI current drive by up to a factor of 2 and support 100% non-inductive operation. More tangential NBI injection is also projected to provide non-solenoidal current ramp-up as needed for an ST-based FNSF. In boundary physics, NSTX measures an inverse relationship between the scrape-off layer heat-flux width and plasma current that could unfavourably impact next-step devices. Recently, NSTX has successfully demonstrated substantial heat-flux reduction using a snowflake divertor configuration, and this type of divertor is incorporated in the NSTX-U design. The physics and engineering design supporting NSTX Upgrade is described.

Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. In particular, the amplitude and frequency of type I ELMs have been actively controlled over a wide parameter range (q(95) = 3-4.8, beta(N)

Abstract: After completing the main construction phase of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) and successfully commissioning the device, first plasma operation started at the end of 2015. Integral commissioning of plasma start-up and operation using electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) and an extensive set of plasma diagnostics have been completed, allowing initial physics studies during the first operational campaign. Both in helium and hydrogen, plasma breakdown was easily achieved. Gaining experience with plasma vessel conditioning, discharge lengths could be extended gradually. Eventually, discharges lasted up to 6 s, reaching an injected energy of 4 MJ, which is twice the limit originally agreed for the limiter configuration employed during the first operational campaign. At power levels of 4 MW central electron densities reached 3 × 1019 m−3 , central electron temperatures reached values of 7 keV and ion temperatures reached just above 2 keV. Important physics studies during this first operational phase include a first assessment of power balance and energy confinement, ECRH power deposition experiments, 2nd harmonic O-mode ECRH using multi-pass absorption, and current drive experiments using electron cyclotron current drive. As in many plasma discharges the electron temperature exceeds the ion temperature significantly, these plasmas are governed by core electron root confinement showing a strong positive electric field in the plasma centre. 12. Integrated plasma facing component calorimetry for measurement of shot integrated deposited energy in the NSTX-U.

Abstract: The upgrade to the National Spherical Torus eXperiment (NSTX-U) [J. Menard et al. , Nucl. Fusion 52 , 083015 (2012)] increases the injected neutral beam power up to 12 MW and the plasma current up to I p = 2 MA for plasma durations up to 5 s. The graphite plasma facing components have been re-designed to handle greater heat and energy fluxes than were seen in NSTX using a castellated design. We present the experimental testing and validation of a castellated graphite target, similar to the prototype tile design, instrumented with thermocouples at various depths in the castellation. During testing, incident heat flux is provided by a programmed electron beam system and surface temperatures are measured via infrared thermography directly viewing the target surface. It was found that the thermocouple response scaled linearly with the measured surface temperature rise regardless of thermocouple depth in the castellation. A sensitivity of 14.3 °C/kJ of deposited energy was found when treating individual castellations as a semi-infinite solid.
