Objective: To determine risk factors for Clostridioides difficile colonization and C. difficile infection (CDI) among patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Design: Retrospective observational cohort study. Setting: Tertiary-care facility. Patients: All adult patients admitted to an ICU from July 1, 2015, to November 6, 2019, who were tested for C. difficile colonization. Patients with CDI were excluded. Methods: Information was collected on patient demographics, comorbidities, laboratory results, and prescriptions. We defined C. difficile colonization as a positive nucleic acid amplification test for C. difficile up to 48 hours before or 24 hours after intensive care unit (ICU) admission without evidence of active infection. We defined active infection as the receipt of an antibiotic whose only indication is the treatment of CDI. The primary outcome measure was the development of CDI up to 30 days after ICU admission. Logistic regression was used to model associations between clinical variables and the development of CDI. Results: The overall C. difficile colonization rate was 4% and the overall CDI rate was 2%. Risk factors for the development of CDI included C. difficile colonization (aOR, 13.3; 95% CI, 8.3–21.3; P < .0001), increased ICU length of stay (aOR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.03–1.05; P < .0001), and a history of inflammatory bowel disease (aOR, 3.8; 95% CI, 1.3–11.1; P = .02). Receipt of any antibiotic during the ICU stay was associated with a borderline increased odds of CDI (aOR, 1.9; 95% CI, 1.0–3.4; P = .05). Conclusion: C. difficile colonization is associated with the development of CDI among ICU patients.

Background Previous studies indicate that taste dysfunction occurs early in the development of Alzheimer's disease. It is debatable whether the deficit in taste is due primarily to peripheral sensory mechanisms or to central processing, or a combination of the two. Objective The aim of our current study is to combine behavior and histological data in APP/PS1 transgenic mice to determine whether APP/PS1 transgenic mice show deficits in unconditioned taste preference and avoidance behaviors and whether taste impairments are due to defects in the peripheral taste system and/or problems with central processing of taste information. Methods The APP/PS1 transgenic mutant mice were used as a model of Alzheimer's disease. We employed a brief-access gustometer test to assess immediate orosensory taste responses of APP/PS1 mice. We used immunohistochemistry to examine tongue, gustatory ganglion, and brain tissues to determine a cytological basis for behavioral deficits. Results There is a significant, selective reduction of bitter taste sensitivity in APP/PS1 mice. These mice also have a loss of TRPM5-expressing taste receptor cells in the circumvallate papillae of the tongue. While we observed no overt loss of neuron cell bodies within the primary gustatory sensory neurons, degeneration of the neurons' peripheral axons innervating the taste bud may play a role in the observed loss of TRPM5-expressing taste receptor cells. Conclusion This data supports a potential role for peripheral taste dysfunction in AD through the selective loss of taste receptor cells. Further study is necessary to delineate the mechanisms and pathological significance of this deficit in AD.

In epidemiologic surveillance, counts of health outcomes are often censored in order to protect privacy when the number occurring in specific times and places is small. Several common approaches modeling such censored, hierarchically structured, over-dispersed count data neglect either the uncertainty in true counts from the censoring process or the hierarchical structure of the spatiotemporally clustered surveillance data. In this simulation study, we contrasted the performance of mixed-effects interval-censored negative binomial regression against three alternative approaches to illustrate how the extent of censoring, between-cluster variation, sample size, and true strength of association can affect model estimates, in the context of structured datasets where small nonzero counts may be censored. We assessed bias in parameter estimates and standard errors, 95% confidence interval coverage, statistical power, and type I error rates with simulated data. These four modeling approaches were then applied to a real-world uncensored dataset of aridity and mortality rates among black South Africans over 1997–2013, applying artificial censoring and deterministic imputation to mimic what would have been obtained had these methods been applied to a censored version of the dataset. The mixed-effects censored negative binomial regression models performed well in both the simulation study and South African aridity study. This approach may be useful in epidemiological research with longitudinal datasets that involve interval-censored exposures.

BackgroundIntegrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) are increasingly used in patients living with HIV due to their safety, effectiveness and high genetic barrier. However, an association with weight gain has recently been suggested and several cases of diabetes mellitus have been reported with raltegravir and dolutegravir. The long-time metabolic impact of these recent molecules remains unclear.ObjectivesTo assess if an INSTI as a third agent is statistically associated with new-onset diabetes mellitus compared with an NNRTI or a PI.Patients and methodsPatients undergoing first-line combined ART (cART) without diabetes at baseline were retrospectively included from the Dat’AIDS French cohort study (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02898987). Incident diabetes mellitus was defined as a notification of new diabetes in the medical history, a glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level superior to 7.5% or the start of a diabetes therapy following the initiation of ART.ResultsFrom 2009 to 2017, 19 462 patients were included, among which 265 cases of diabetes mellitus occurred. Multivariate and survival analyses did not highlight an increase in new-onset diabetes in patients undergoing cART with an INSTI as a third agent compared with an NNRTI or a PI. BMI >30 kg/m2, age >37 years old (in survival analysis), black race or Hispanic ethnicity, arterial hypertension and AIDS were associated with a higher proportion of incident diabetes.ConclusionsINSTIs were not statistically associated with new-onset diabetes. However, clinicians should remain aware of this possible metabolic comorbidity, particularly in patients with a high BMI and older patients.

Infertility remains the most prevalent reason for cattle being removed from production environments. We utilized metabolomic profiling to identify metabolites in the blood plasma that may be useful in identifying infertile heifers at the time of artificial insemination (AI). Prior to AI, phenotypic parameters including body condition, weight, and reproductive organ measurements were collected. These were determined not effective at differentiating between fertile and infertile heifers. Analysis of the resulting metabolomic profiles revealed 15 metabolites at significantly different levels (T-test P ≤ 0.05), with seven metabolites having a greater than 2-fold difference (T-test P ≤ 0.05, fold change ≥2, ROC-AUC ≥ 0.80) between infertile and fertile heifers. We further characterized the utility of using the levels of these metabolites in the blood plasma to discriminate between fertile and infertile heifers. Finally, we investigated the potential role inflammation may play by comparing the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the white blood cells of infertile heifers to that of fertile heifers. We found significantly higher expression in infertile heifers of the proinflammatory markers tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), interleukin 6 (IL6), and the C-X-C motif chemokine 5 (CXCL5). Our work offers potentially valuable information regarding the diagnosis of fertility problems in heifers undergoing AI.

BACKGROUND: Although induction of labor (IOL) of low-risk nulliparous women at 39 weeks reduces the risk of cesarean delivery compared with expectant management, concern regarding more frequent use of labor induction remains given that this intervention historically has been thought to incur greater resource utilization. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether planned elective labor induction at 39 weeks among low-risk nulliparous women, compared with expectant management, was associated with differences in health care resource utilization from the time of randomization through 8 weeks postpartum. STUDY DESIGN: This is a planned secondary analysis of a multi-center randomized trial in which low-risk nulliparous women were assigned to IOL at 39 weeks or expectant management. We assessed resource utilization post-randomization in three time periods: antepartum (AP), delivery admission, and discharge through 8 weeks postpartum (PP). RESULTS: Of 6096 women with data available, those in the IOL group (n = 3059) were significantly less likely in the AP period after randomization to have at least one ambulatory visit for routine prenatal care (32.4% vs. 68.4%), unanticipated care (0.5% vs. 2.6%), or urgent care (16.2% vs. 44.3%), or at least one antepartum hospitalization (0.8% vs. 2.2%, p0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Women randomized to IOL had longer durations in labor and delivery, but significantly fewer AP visits, tests, and treatments, and shorter maternal and neonatal hospital durations post-delivery. These results demonstrate that the health outcome advantages associated with IOL are gained without incurring uniformly greater health care resource use. Offshore wind energy has become a promising source of renewable energy in recent years with many installed farms around the world successfully producing energy. As preliminary wind resource studies reveal, in the US much of the potential could be tapped in deeper water where floating solutions become favorable. The efficiency of floating offshore platforms is being studied and demonstrated in pilot projects such as Hywind in Scotland. In order to reduce the substructure cost in offshore wind projects, which is usually 25-30%, a novel shared anchor concept has been studied with spar supported turbines. Simulations are carried out with National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) OC3 Hywind floating system and 5MW wind turbine. A similar study has been carried out with semisubmersible platforms earlier. Comparing the statistics of the net anchor forces from both the types of platforms reveals decreased anchor forces in case of spar due to large force cancellation and decreased response to wave action. Given the shared anchor concept in-principle reduces the material cost with reduced number of anchors than the conventional anchor types; further reduction in anchor forces in case of spar supported platform would be more cost-beneficial with more material savings.

A correction has been published:The Journal of Infectious Diseases, Volume 218, Issue 8, 15 October 2018, Page 1350, https://doi.org/10.1093/infdis/jiy315; International audience; Background:We assessed prevalence and risk factors for anal human papillomavirus (HPV) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive men who have sex with men (MSM), who are at high-risk of HPV-related anal cancer. Methods:APACHES is a multicentric, prospective study of anal HPV infection and lesions in HIV-positive MSM aged ≥35 years. At baseline, participants underwent anal swabs for HPV and cytology, plus high-resolution anoscopy. High-risk HPV (HR-HPV) was tested by Cobas4800, with genotyping of HR-HPV positives by PapilloCheck. Results:Among 490 participants, prevalence of HPV16 and HR-HPV was 29% and 70%, respectively, and did not differ significantly by age, sexual behavior, or markers of HIV or immune deficiency. Smoking was the only, albeit weak (odds ratio, 1.8; 95% confidence interval, 1.2-2.7), predictor of HR-HPV. High-risk HPV and HPV16 prevalence increased strongly with anal diagnosis severity, both by worse cytological/histological (composite) diagnosis at APACHES baseline and worse historical diagnosis. HPV16 rose from 19% among participants who were negative for lesions to 63% among participants with high-grade lesions. In contrast, non-HPV16 HR-HPVs were less prevalent in high-grade (37%) than negative (64%) composite diagnosis, and their causal attribution was further challenged by multiple HPV infections. Conclusions:Human papillomavirus 16 is ubiquitously frequent among human immunodeficiency virus -positive men having sex with men, and more strongly associated with high-grade anal lesions than other high-risk types, confirming it as a target for anal cancer prevention.

MUTYH-associated polyposis (MAP) is an autosomal recessive syndrome caused by biallelic mutations in the base excision repair gene MUTYH. Owing to potential limitations in the MAP testing strategy and testing criteria, it is possible that MAP is being under-identified both genotypically and phenotypically. To determine whether full sequencing of MUTYH would increase clinical sensitivity over a founder mutation (FM) strategy, a retrospective analysis of two datasets from a commercial clinical laboratory was performed. The first cohort contained 1522 individuals who received MUTYH analysis for two FMs with subsequent full-gene sequencing. Eighty-five biallelic individuals were identified; 47 carried two FMs, 17 carried one FM and one mutation identified on full sequencing, and 21 carried biallelic mutations identified only on full sequencing. The second cohort contained 921 patients with colorectal cancer

The Burswood clay is a lightly overconsolidated and sensitive silty clay of high to extremely high plasticity. In two extensive characterisation studies, a wide range of in situ tests were carried out at the Burswood site, including full-flow penetrometer tests (T-bar, ball and plate). In addition, thin-wall tube samples and high-quality Sherbrooke block samples were collected for laboratory testing. The stress–strain–strength, consolidation and compressibility characteristics of Burswood clay were investigated, and the performance of various penetrometers in characterising the soft Burswood clay was assessed. The paper compares values of stiffness and shear strength measured by different in situ and laboratory tests, quantifying the degree of non-linearity of the stress–strain response, the effect of sample disturbance on the measured mechanical properties, the degree of strength anisotropy, and the influence of strain rate on the measured shear strength. In addition, factors relating the net penetration resistance measured by cone, T-bar and ball penetrometers to yield stress, small-strain shear modulus and different measures of undrained shear strength are also provided.

While improvements in equipment and sampling methods have enabled collection of better quality samples of soft clays for more reliable engineering design and performance prediction, current sample quality assessment methods typically require destructive laboratory testing performed long after samples are taken. This paper describes a nondestructive technique for sample quality assessment of soft clays using shear wave velocity. A portable bender element device was used to measure shear wave velocity ( Vvh ) in the field immediately following collection of Sherbrooke block, tube, and split spoon samples of Boston blue clay. Vvh values were compared to in situ values from seismic piezocone ( VSCPTU ) tests. The ratio Vvh ∕ VSCPTU was compared with results from a conventional, laboratory-based assessment method. Results indicate a consistent correlation between laboratory-based methods and the Vvh ∕ VSCPTU ratio, which ranges from Vvh ∕ VSCPTU =0.77 for the block samples to 0.28 for split spoon samples. The ...

HADRON-HADRON COLLISIONS ,High Energy Physics::Experiment ,NEW PHYSICS - Abstract
A search for nonresonant new phenomena, originating from either contact interactions or large extra spatial dimensions, has been carried out using events with two isolated electrons or muons. These events, produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV, were recorded by the ATLAS detector. The data sample, collected throughout 2011, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 and 5.0 fb-1 in the e+e- and μ+μ- channels, respectively. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Using a Bayesian approach, 95% confidence level lower limits ranging from 9.0 to 13.9 TeV are placed on the energy scale of ℓℓqq contact interactions in the left-left isoscalar model. Lower limits ranging from 2.4 to 3.9 TeV are also set on the string scale in large extra dimension models. After combining these limits with results from a similar search in the diphoton channel, slightly more stringent limits are obtained.

An adolescent's possible response to being the victim of interpersonal violence is not limited to posttraumatic stress disorder and depression but may also involve a host of developmental effects, including the occurrence of high-risk behaviors that may have a significant and negative impact on the adolescent's psychological and physical health. Identifying such high-risk behaviors, understanding their possible link to a previous victimization incident, and implementing interventions that have been demonstrated to reduce such behaviors may help decrease potential reciprocal interactions between these areas. Clinicians in psychiatric practice may be in a unique position to make these connections, since parents of adolescents may perceive a greater need for mental health services for youth engaging in problematic externalizing behaviors than for those displaying internalizing symptoms. In this article, the authors first describe high-risk behaviors, including substance use, delinquent behavior, risky sexual behaviors, and self-injurious behaviors, that have been linked with experiencing interpersonal violence. They then review empirically based treatments that have been indicated to treat these deleterious behaviors in order to help clinicians select appropriate psychosocial interventions for this population. Recommendations for future research on the treatment of high-risk behaviors in adolescents are also presented.

Deposition of maximum laser energy into a small, high-Z enclosure in a short laser pulse creates a hot environment. Such targets were recently included in an experimental campaign using the first four of the 192 beams of the National Ignition Facility [J. A. Paisner, E. M. Campbell, and W. J. Hogan, Fusion Technology 26, 755 (1994)], under construction at the University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. These targets demonstrate good laser coupling, reaching a radiation temperature of 340 eV. In addition, the Raman backscatter spectrum contains features consistent with Brillouin backscatter of Raman forward scatter [A. B. Langdon and D. E. Hinkel, Physical Review Letters 89, 015003 (2002)]. Also, NIF Early Light diagnostics indicate that 20% of the direct backscatter from these reduced-scale targets is in the polarization orthogonal to that of the incident light.

An experimental campaign to maximize radiation drive in small-scale hohlraums has been carried out at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawerence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, CA, USA) and at the OMEGA laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (Rochester, NY, USA). The small-scale hohlraums, laser energy, laser pulse, and diagnostics were similar at both facilities but the geometries were very different. The NIF experiments used on-axis laser beams whereas the OMEGA experiments used 19 beams in three beam cones. In the cases when the lasers coupled well and produced similar radiation drive, images of x-ray bumthrough and laser deposition indicate the pattern of plasma filling is very different.

Outsourcing of IT functions has become so pervasive that IT managers and CIOs cannot ignore it. To complicate the matter, outsourcing to other countries has become increasingly popular. The advantages of this type of outsourcing include cost savings, 24/7 operation, and access to highly specialized skills. Yet a strategic alliance with a geographically and culturally remote partner presents its own unique challenges. Thus, IT professionals should not take the strategic questions of whether or not to outsource lightly, or avoid it. Rather, they can make such a decision by analyzing the responses to the following five key questions, what we call the five Ws: Who should outsource? What is outsourcing? Why outsource? Where should you outsource? When should you outsource? This article emerged from a focus group of CIOs conducted by the CIO Institute, a not-for-profit community of practice for CIOs in the Greater Philadelphia region.

The Sonoran pronghorn (Antilocapra americana sonoriensis), a subspecies in danger of extinction, inhabits an area of the Barry M. Goldwater Range (BMGR) in southwestern Arizona. Since 1941, BMGR has been a training site for military pilots. We evaluated whether this subspecies of pronghorn used areas, as defined by noise levels produced by military aircraft, in proportion to their availability. Radiocollar-equipped pronghorn were monitored during September 1994 to August 1998, and their locations were recorded on a map of sound levels. In general, pronghorn used areas with lower levels of noise (

As energy consumption has increased over the past 200 years, energy fuels have become cleaner and consumption more efficient. Fossil fuels currently supply approximately 85% of the energy needs of the world and 80% of the energy needs of the United States. Crude oil, a transportation fuel, supplies about 40% of the energy needs of the U.S., with 56% imported from other nations. Natural gas and coal each supply nearly a quarter of our energy needs. Half of the nation's electricity is produced from coal. Renewable sources including hydropower, geothermal, solar, and wind provide less than 7% of our domestic energy. The remaining 8% is supplied by nuclear power. Because of our dependence on fossil fuels, the elaborate infrastructure that has been built to produce, process, and transport these fuels and their products, and the political environment, a transition to other energy sources will not occur before the middle of the 21st century. Moderate prices for fossil fuels will also slow transition to the next ...

- Abstract
The detector at CERN's large hadron collider (LHC) was exposed to proton-proton collisions from beams crossing at 40 MHz. A three-level trigger system will select potentially interesting events in order to reduce this rate to 100- 200 Hz. A trigger decision is made by the Level-1 central trigger processor (CTP) reducing the incoming rate to less than 100 kHz. The Level-1 decision is based on calorimeter information and hits in dedicated muon trigger detectors. The final Level-1 trigger system is currently being installed in the experiment with completion expected in autumn 2007. Cosmic ray data are regularly recorded as an increasing fraction of the trigger system comes online. We present an overview of the Level-1 trigger system architecture and report on the installation and commissioning process at the ATLAS experimental site. Emphasis is put on the integration of the CTP with the calorimeter and muon trigger systems. We show results from analyses of cosmic ray data recorded in situ and verify, where possible, that the Level-1 trigger meets the requirements and will be ready for data taking.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the incidence of lymphohaematopoietic malignancy around industrial complexes that include major oil refineries in Great Britain after recent public and scientific concern of possible carcinogenic hazards of emissions from the petrochemical industry. METHODS: Small area study of the incidence of lymphohaematopoietic malignancies, 1974-91, within 7.5 km of all 11 oil refineries (grouped into seven sites) in Great Britain that were operational by the early 1970s and processed more than two million tonnes of crude oil in 1993. RESULTS: Combined analysis of data from all seven sites showed no significant (p < 0.05) increase in risk of these malignancies within 2 km or 7.5 km. Hodgkin's lymphoma, but no other malignancy, showed evidence (p = 0.02) of a decline in risk with distance from refineries, but there was an apparent deficit of cases of multiple myeloma near the refineries (p = 0.04). CONCLUSION: There was no evidence of association between residence near oil refineries and leukaemias, or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A weak positive association was found between risk of Hodgkin's disease and proximity to major petrochemical industry, and a negative association with multiple myeloma, which may be chance findings within the context of multiple statistical testing.

Substantial amounts of a single protein have been extracted into electrophoresis sample buffer from archived formalin-fixed brain blood vessels, taken from a case of cerebral amyloidosis. Cyanogen bromide cleavage and tryptic digestion of the protein on Western blots allowed amino acid sequences from three resultant peptides to be determined. Comparison of these peptides with database sequences identified the extracted protein as being derived from an immunoglobulin light chain. This is the first demonstration of amino acid sequencing of a polypeptide extracted from formalin-fixed tissue. This case also appears to be unique, since primary cerebrovascular amyloidosis involving immunoglobulin light chains has not been previously described. The amyloid protein had clearly resisted formalin fixation; it is possible that this resistance occurred because the protein was deposited in large amounts as insoluble densely packed aggregates, which may exclude infiltration of the formalin. This technique may therefore have applications in the post-mortem diagnosis of amyloidoses and in the purification of other amyloids.

Soft x-ray power diagnostics are essential for measuring the total x-ray flux, radiation temperature, conversion efficiency, and albedo that define the energetics in indirect and direct drive, as well as other types of high temperature laser plasma experiments. A key diagnostic for absolute radiation flux and radiation temperature in hohlraum experiments is the Dante broadband soft x-ray spectrometer. For the extended range of x-ray fluxes predicted for National Ignition Facility (NIF) compared to Omega or Nova hohlraums, the Dante spectrometer for NIF will include more high energy (

The prion encephalopathies are characterized by accumulation in the brain of the abnormal form PrP sc of a normal host gene product PrP c . The mechanism and site of formation of PrP sc from PrP c are currently unknown. In this study, ME7 scrapie-infected mouse brain was used to show, both biochemically and by double-labelled immunogold electron microscopy, that proteinase K-resistant PrP sc is enriched in subcellular structures which contain the cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate receptor, ubiquitin-protein conjugates, β-glucuronidase, and cathepsin B, termed late endosome-like organelles. The glycosylinositol phospholipid membrane-anchored PrP c will enter such compartments for normal degradation and the organelles may therefore act as chambers for the conversion of PrP c into infectious PrP sc in this murine model of scrapie.

In a recent preliminary study it was reported that a severe head injury resulted in the deposition of beta amyloid protein (beta AP) in the cortical ribbon of 30% of patients who survived for less than two weeks. Multiple cortical areas have now been examined from 152 patients (age range 8 weeks-81 years) after a severe head injury with a survival time of between four hours and 2.5 years. This series was compared with a group of 44 neurologically normal controls (age range 51 to 80 years). Immunostaining with an antibody to beta AP confirmed the original findings that 30% of cases of head injury have beta AP deposits in one or more cortical areas. Increasing age seemed to accentuate the extent of beta AP deposition and potential correlations with other pathological changes associated with head injury were also investigated. In addition, beta amyloid precursor protein (beta APP) immunoreactivity was increased in the perikarya of neurons in the vicinity of beta AP deposits. The data from this study support proposals that increased expression of beta APP is part of an acute phase response to neuronal injury in the human brain, that extensive overexpression of beta APP can lead to deposition of beta AP and the initiation of an Alzheimer disease-type process within days, and that head injury may be an important aetiological factor in Alzheimer's disease.

Cats vaccinated intranasally (i.n.) with a temperature sensitive feline infectious peritonitis virus (ts-FIPV) vaccine were protected against an FIP-inducing challenge. Seventeen of 20 vaccinated cats (85%) survived a rigorous virulent FIPV challenge that caused FIP in 12 of 12 non-vaccinated cats (100%), 10 (83%) of which died. Intranasal vaccination stimulated serum IgG and serum and salivary IgA antibody responses (measured by ELISA), FIPV-neutralizing antibody (VN), and a cell-mediated immune (CMI) response as measured by lymphocyte proliferation. The serum antibody response to vaccination was not associated with protection. In fact, the IgG, IgA and VN titres were much higher in control cats than in vaccinated cats following challenge suggesting an immune-mediated pathogenesis. In contrast, stimulation of a mucosal IgA response to vaccination was related to protection. The in vitro proliferation of peripheral blood lymphocytes in response to virulent FIPV was observed in vaccinated cats, in vaccinated and challenged cats but not in non-vaccinated challenged cats.

A first set of shock timing, laser-plasma interaction, hohlraum energetics and hydrodynamic experiments have been performed using the first 4 beams of the National Ignition Facility (NIF), in support of indirect drive Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and High Energy Density Physics (HEDP). In parallel, a robust set of optical and X-ray spectrometers, interferometer, calorimeters and imagers have been activated. The experiments have been undertaken with laser powers and energies of up to 8 TW and 17 kJ in flattop and shaped 1–9 ns pulses focused with various beam smoothing options. The experiments have demonstrated excellent agreement between measured and predicted laser-target coupling in foils and hohlraums, even when extended to a longer pulse regime unattainable at previous laser facilities, validated the predicted effects of beam smoothing on intense laser beam propagation in long scale-length plasmas and begun to test 3D codes by extending the study of laser driven hydrodynamic jets to 3D geometries.

Abstract This paper presents results from research directed towards developing more accurate and reliable measures of the intact and remolded undrained shear strength (su and sur) of soft sediments. These soil parameters are critical inputs to assessment of certain offshore geohazards, such as submarine landslides, and design of oil and gas production and transportation infrastructure, such a foundation systems and pipelines. The research was conducted at well characterized terrestrial test sites consisting of soft clay deposits. Extensive in situ testing, soil sampling and laboratory testing were conducted for each of the test sites. The in situ testing program was focused on studying the relatively new family of in situ tools known as full-flow penetrometers. Sample collection and subsequent advanced laboratory testing was focused on assessment of sample disturbance and laboratory measurement of high quality reference design parameters for interpretation of the in situ tests. Developments in the application and interpretation of the T-bar and ball full-flow penetrometers for in situ measurement of su and sur are presented. A new nondestructive method of assessing sample quality using shear wave velocity measurements on collected samples is described. The method allows for evaluation of sample quality in the field immediately after sample collection. Application of the full-flow probes for in situ characterization of offshore sediments and the shear wave velocity tool for assessment of sample quality during offshore sampling operations is described. Introduction Both terrestrial and offshore soft sediment site characterization programs for geohazard analysis and infrastructure design ideally combine in situ testing and follow-on laboratory testing on high quality samples. Assessment of sample quality is essential for evaluating the accuracy of laboratory measured mechanical properties. Coupling this with well calibrated results from in situ tests greatly enhances the reliability of site characterization programs. However, terrestrial and offshore site investigation practices have largely developed separately due to the different conditions under which in situ tests are conducted and soil samples are collected. Budgets associated with offshore investigations are generally larger but the challenges and costs are often much greater, especially as investigations continue moving to deeper waters. Ideally both practices benefit from a two-way technology transfer so that developments in sampling and in situ testing equipment and methods can be adopted in either practice. Because of cost and logistical considerations, new tools and practices proposed for offshore site investigations are often proof tested using well characterized terrestrial sites. This paper describes findings from recent research on the characterization of soft terrestrial sediments and the application of these findings to the characterization of soft offshore sediments. The research was focused on two key components of site characterization programs:in situ testing andevaluation of sample quality. The primary emphasis was on the use of new tools that provide a means for developing accurate measures of the intact and remolded undrained shear strength (su and sur) profiles of soft sediments. For such deposits, both su and sur are critical soil design parameters for conducting reliable numerical analyses of offshore geohazards, such as submarine landslides, and infrastructure design such as foundation systems.

Within the tight space of a compact enclosure like a laptop, the performance of the active heat sink can be affected by its location, dimensions, blade design, and attached fins layout. These design parameters will affect the heat sink performance in terms of the amount of air it is able to deliver, and hence the amount of cooling it provides, as well as the acoustics energy level it is emitting while doing so. The objective of the current work is to optimize the design of the blower blades of an active heat sink under installed conditions in a laptop, in-situ, using 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with arbitrary shape deformation technology (ARD). The objective function is to maximize the amount of airflow while maintaining the broadband noise level emitted by the blower under a certain baseline value. A double digit improvement in airflow rate is expected to be reached while satisfying the acoustical constraints and having a constant fan rpm.

The structure of the plant inflorescence is an important agronomic and ornamental trait studied for its potential economic applications: the capacity to modify inflorescence architecture has always been a breeder's goal. The shape of flowering plants is determined by the forms of the flower-bearing branch system, named inflorescences, and their position in the overall structure of the plant. Branching patterns and branches are produced by the shoot apical meristem; thus, inflorescence structure reflects the number, size and activity of the meristems. The genetic and molecular control of inflorescence and flower development has been extensively studied in model dicotyledonous plants such as Arabidopsis . However, not all the genes controlling inflorescence architecture in grasses are orthologous of Arabidopsis genes and thus grass inflorescence genes could not have been identified by simple extrapolation from Arabidopsis . Among plants, rice and maize in particular are the best genetic models for studying inflorescences: the maize inflorescence is a useful model for developmental and evolutionary studies, because several mutants have been isolated that taken together dissect every step of the inflorescence development. Because of the sequencing of the rice genome, positional information can be used to clone genes in maize, wheat and related grasses. In recent years, several master genes involved in inflorescence development have been cloned, providing considerable insights into the genetic control of the plant inflorescence.

This paper presents results of an investigation of the potential to evaluate small stain shear modulus (Gmax) anisotropy for unconfined clay samples using a simple test procedure. Vertical and horizontal shear wave velocities (Vvh, Vhv and Vhh) and residual isotropic effective stress were measured on saturated samples of Boston Blue Clay, Australian Burswood Clay, and Norwegian Onsoy Clay using portable piezoceramic bender element equipment and a suction probe. The measured data, which show significant Gmax anisotropy for the Boston Blue Clay and Onsoy Clay sites, are evaluated and compared with Gmax anisotropy of clays from the literature.

Although diminished self-efficacy has been linked to childhood psychopathology, including depression, it has only recently been studied in relation to childhood anxiety disorders. This study examines the relationship between self-efficacy and self-reported anxiety in children who have been referred for an assessment and possible treatment of anxiety symptoms as well as a comparison group of non-referred children. A self-efficacy questionnaire for children and a childhood anxiety measure were administered to a group of children referred for assessment and treatment of a clinical anxiety disorder (n = 50) and a non-referred control group (n = 50). Results indicate that the two samples differed significantly on measures of emotional self-efficacy, but not in terms of self-reported anxiety or other self-efficacy domains. Potential explanations for observed findings are discussed, including the possibility that self-reports of emotional self-efficacy in children may vary by clinical or referral status, amongst those reporting higher levels of anxiety overall.

Due to the huge interaction rates and the tough experimental environment of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s)=14 TeV and luminosities of up to 10^34cm^-2s^-1, one of the experimental challenges at the LHC is the triggering of interesting events. In the ATLAS experiment a three-level trigger system is foreseen for this purpose. The first-level trigger is implemented in custom hardware and has been designed to reduce the data rate from the initial bunch-crossing rate of 40MHz to around 75 kHz. Its event selection is based on information from the calorimeters and dedicated muon detectors. This article gives an overview over the full first-level trigger system including the Calorimeter Trigger, the Muon Trigger and the Central Trigger Processor. In addition, recent results are reported that have been obtained from test-beam studies performed at CERN where the full first-level trigger chain was established successfully for the first time and used to trigger the read-out of up to nine ATLAS sub-detector systems. Summary form only given. An experimental campaign to study radiation drive in small-scale halfraums has been carried out using the first four beams of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawerence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, CA). The targets fill with plasma so quickly that, late in time, most of the laser energy is deposited at the laser entrance hole. Experiments have shown the effect of laser beam conditioning, laser power, and target size on hohlraum performance. The experimental results on X-radiation drive, laser backscatter, hard X-rays, hard X-ray imaging, and X-ray burnthrough are discussed

Ubiquitin plays a central role in normal cellular function as well as in disease. It is possible to group ubiquitin-immunostained structures into several main groups, the most distinctive being the ubiquitin/intermediate filament/alphaB crystallin family of inclusions that seem to represent a general cellular response to abnormal proteins recently termed the aggresomal response. While ubiquitin immunohistochemistry is a very useful technique for detecting pathological changes and inclusion bodies in the nervous system this alone is not enough to classify inclusions, and a panel of antibodies is recommended to clarify any findings made by screening tissues with anti-ubiquitin. Several mechanistic possibilities now exist to explain the accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins in cells of the nervous system, understanding of which should lead to new therapeutic advances in the group of chronic neurodegenerative diseases.
