The Italian INFN-Grid Project is committed to set-up, run and manage an unprecedented nation-wide Grid infrastructure. The implementation and use of this INFN-Grid Testbed is presented and discussed. Particular care and attention are devoted to those activities, relevant for the management of the Testbed, carried out by the INFN within international Grid Projects.

Abstract

ALICE is a general-purpose heavy-ion experiment designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark–gluon plasma in nucleus–nucleus collisions at the LHC. It currently includes more than 900 physicists and senior engineers, from both nuclear and high-energy physics, from about 80 institutions in 28 countries. The experiment was approved in February 1997. The detailed design of the different detector systems has been laid down in a number of Technical Design Reports issued between mid-1998 and the end of 2001 and construction has started for most detectors. Since the last comprehensive information on detector and physics performance was published in the ALICE Technical Proposal in 1996, the detector as well as simulation, reconstruction and analysis software have undergone significant development. The Physics Performance Report (PPR) will give an updated and comprehensive summary of the current status and performance of the various ALICE subsystems, including updates to the Technical Design Reports, where appropriate, as well as a description of systems which have not been published in a Technical Design Report. The PPR will be published in two volumes. The current Volume I contains: a short theoretical overview and an extensive reference list concerning the physics topics of interest to ALICE, relevant experimental conditions at the LHC, a short summary and update of the subsystem designs, and a description of the offline framework and Monte Carlo generators.

Abstract

The ALICE Time-Of-Flight (TOF) detector is based on the Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) technology capable of a total time resolution (intrinsic + electronics) of approximate to 50ps. The detector is made of 1638 MRPCs located in 90 gas-tight modules distributed over 18 azimuthal sectors (SuperModules, SM). The front-end electronics is based on a very fast low-power amplifier/discriminator ASIC (NINO), while the readout relies on the High-Performance TDC (HPTDC) Chip. In ALICE the global TOF time resolution is expected to be < 100 ps. In this paper the MRPGs production and tests are described together with the module and SM assembly procedures and duality tests.

Abstract

Since the beginning of commissioning of the ALICE-TOF detector, one of the most crucial aspects has been to check the quality of the data produced. Both during last November tests at the CERN PS and in the cosmic-ray test facility, running since more than one year, the data taking of assembled TOF modules has been continuously monitored in order to detect as quickly as possible faulty conditions or bad detector configurations. The tools developed for these purposes, which are currently also used for the commissioning of TOF SuperModules, and the new under-development automatic data quality monitor will ensure the highest possible TOF data quality during its operation.

Abstract

The phi->K+K- decay channel in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC is studied through a full simulation of the ALICE detector. The study focuses on possible signatures in this channel of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation. On a basis of 10^6 collisions at high centrality some proposed QGP signatures are clearly visible both in K+K- invariant mass and transverse mass distributions. The high significance of this observation appears to reside heavily on the use of the TOF (Time Of Flight) system of ALICE in addition to its central tracking detectors., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, to appear in EPJ C

Abstract

We present evidence for a dependence of the average deep underground muon energies on shower size in the coincident EAS-TOP and LVD data at the Gran Sasso laboratories. The measured relation agrees with a mixed chemical composition of the cosmic ray primary spectrum at energies around 10(15) eV. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
