Drawing on rich empirical material collected through multi-sited research among Japanese musicians based in France, Poland, and Japan, this chapter explores the professional lives of Japanese artists in the context of the racialized discourse of “authenticity” in classical music. The author shows how these musicians build their careers in the classical music industry, where they are unequally positioned as “inauthentic” on the grounds of their socially constructed ethno-cultural heritage, which is deemed incompatible with “authentic” classical musicianship. By unpacking the senses involved in the “authenticity” discourse in classical music, this analysis sheds light on the putative conflict that musicians experience when raising claims to professional identification with classical musicianship and their ethno-cultural affiliation with Japan. This chapter demonstrates how Japanese artists struggle to gain recognition within the classical music industry by engaging in transnational artistic activities in order to align with “authentic musicianship” while preserving their Japanese heritage.

This study was conducted to understand the exact turning of the NiTi shape memory alloy and consisted of four stages: experimental work, function modelling using RSM method, Monte Carlo method optimization and hardware implementation of Monte Carlo method . This article has the following main objectives: to develop a framework for solving machining optimization problems using the Monte Carlo method and hardware implementation of MC method. The solutions presented in this paper are important from the point of view of practical solutions related to the prediction and optimization of the cutting forces components Fc, Fp and Ff during turning of NiTi shape memory alloy.

Amplification of the mitotic kinase Aurora A or loss of its regulator protein phosphatase 6 (PP6) have emerged as drivers of genome instability. Cells lacking PPP6C, the catalytic subunit of PP6, have amplified Aurora A activity, and as we show here, enlarged mitotic spindles which fail to hold chromosomes tightly together in anaphase, causing defective nuclear structure. Using functional genomics to shed light on the processes underpinning these changes, we discover synthetic lethality between PPP6C and the kinetochore protein NDC80. We find that NDC80 is phosphorylated on multiple N-terminal sites during spindle formation by Aurora A–TPX2, exclusively at checkpoint-silenced, microtubule-attached kinetochores. NDC80 phosphorylation persists until spindle disassembly in telophase, is increased in PPP6C knockout cells, and is Aurora B-independent. An Aurora-phosphorylation-deficient NDC80-9A mutant reduces spindle size and suppresses defective nuclear structure in PPP6C knockout cells. In regulating NDC80 phosphorylation by Aurora A–TPX2, PP6 plays an important role in mitotic spindle formation and size control and thus the fidelity of cell division.

Purpose: Defect of the interproximal wall of the tooth is filled with use the shaped matrix and wedge which seals bottom margin during filling. Better fit of the wedge and equalization of the pressure forces on the matrix is achieved by the compliance of the wedge structure through cuts and perforations and the use of silicone materials and unidirectionally expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). The work presents a methodology for model studies of the mechanics of dental wedges in order to evaluate and compare the impact of wedge materials on functional features. The hypothesis of the work was that the mechanical properties of ePTFE determine the effectiveness of the dental wedge. Design/methodology/approach: Effect of modulus of elasticity and friction coefficient of wedge and matrix materials on the functional features of the wedge was studied on the way Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Simulation included contact sliding between wedge and matrix what was simulated in nonlinear large displacements regime. The sealing evaluation criterion was the pressure distribution between the wedge and matrix below the lower edge of the defect. Displacement values were the criterion for the loss of convexity as a result of matrix deformation. Findings: The material for the wedge should be characterized by a low coefficient of friction, low elasticity (ensuring high compliance of the wedge) and at the same time the ability to large permanent deformations, which allows for plastic shaping of the matrix from the side of the defect in order to achieve the required wall convexity and the tangent point. Research limitations/implications: Results show tendency of phenomena in limitation to model simplification of the interdental gap and the ideal adhesion of the matrix to the tooth and linear elasticity of materials. Practical implications: The material that best meets the requirements is unidirectionally expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, which has one of the lowest coefficients of friction and very high plasticity necessary to shape the matrix from the inside of the cavity. Originality/value: Methodology of model study and criteria of functional characteristics of dental wedge was presented.

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate how consumers perceive the value of luxury brands and the antecedents to these perceptions, including consumer knowledge, reference group influence and accessibility. Prior studies focused less on the salience of consumer knowledge and sources of luxury information, in addition to their accessibility to luxury. Hence, a more nuanced luxury conceptualization is needed to reflect luxury’s conceptual fluidity, consumers’ different lived experiences, accessibility levels and persistent retail marketing changes.Design/methodology/approachIn a survey involving 475 US respondents, five hypotheses were tested and analyzed with structural equations modeling, examining the relationships among knowledge and accessibility of luxury brands, as well as reference group influence and its impact on consumer value perceptions of luxury brands and consumer behaviors.FindingsSignificant relationships were found for all five hypotheses and demonstrated that knowledge, reference group influence and accessibility have strong relationships with consumers’ personal value perceptions of luxury brands and behavioral measures, including purchase intentions, willingness to recommend to a friend and willingness to pay a price premium.Originality/valueThis conceptualization recognizes that consumers must have luxury brand awareness prior to reference group influence, developing individual luxury value perceptions and entering the buying process. This research contributes to the literature by highlighting consumers’ views of the luxury category, which induce perceptions and potential outcomes. It also expands the understanding of consumer’s accessibility to luxury products, which impacts purchase intentions. While it was conducted in the USA, it yields broader consumer perspectives.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to better understand the role of closeness and the relationships between social media influencers and their followers, and, more specifically, how social media influencers can effectively manage their human brands.Design/methodology/approachTwo studies were conducted to explore social media influencers. Qualitative content analysis and modeling with path analysis were used to analyze the data.FindingsResults found attractiveness and likeability to positively predict attitudes toward the influencer, word-of-mouth and purchase intentions, whereas similarity only predicted word-of-mouth from the follower. Closeness served as a moderator but had different effects. Closeness positively moderated the effect of attractiveness on purchase intentions; however, it had a negative effect with similarity on purchase intentions. Moreover, closeness moderated the effect of likeability on attitude toward the influencer.Research limitations/implicationsThis study was limited by the student sample as well as the students’ self-identification of a social media influencer. Future research should include experimental design manipulating well-known/followed or fictional social media influencers on different social media.Practical implicationsThis paper explores the characteristics of social media influencers as well as the potential outcomes associated with influencers on social media. The implications for marketers and advertisers include a better understanding of how consumers engage with influencers on social media.Originality/valueThe role of closeness is identified as a moderator of consumers’ behaviors toward social media influencers.

The article presents the analysis of accelerations that are on the spare wheel and compares them with the standard values. The article shows how to register loads on a spare wheel. The measurement results were presented in the form of speed charts and acceleration charts. The maximum values of overloads acting on the spare wheel were determined. The results obtained were summarized. The acceleration values obtained have shown that the standard values are underestimated.

Background: The anti-DFS70 autoantibodies are one of the most commonly and widely described agent of unknown clinical significance, frequently detected in healthy individuals. It is not known whether the DFS70 autoantibodies are protective or pathogenic. One of the factors suspected of inducing the formation of anti-DFS70 antibodies is increased oxidative stress. We evaluated the coexistence of anti-DFS70 antibodies with selected markers of oxidative stress and investigated whether these antibodies could be considered as indirect markers of oxidative stress. Methods: The intensity of oxidative stress was measured in all samples via indices of free-radical damage to lipids and proteins such as total oxidant status (TOS), concentrations of lipid hydroperoxides (LPH), lipofuscin (LPS), and malondialdehyde (MDA). The parameters of the non-enzymatic antioxidant system, such as total antioxidant status (TAS) and uric acid concentration (UA), were also measured, as well as the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Based on TOS and TAS values, the oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. All samples were also tested with indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and 357 samples were selected for direct monospecific anti DFS70 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing. Results: The anti-DFS70 antibodies were confirmed by ELISA test in 21.29% of samples. Compared with anti-DFS70 negative samples we observed 23% lower concentration of LPH ( P = .038) and 11% lower concentration of UA ( P = .005). TOS was 20% lower ( P = .014). The activity of SOD was up to 5% higher ( P = .037). The Pearson correlation showed weak negative correlation for LPH, UA, and TOS and a weak positive correlation for SOD activity. Conclusion: In samples positive for the anti-DFS70 antibody a decreased level of oxidative stress was observed, especially in the case of samples with a high antibody titer. Anti-DFS70 antibodies can be considered as an indirect marker of reduced oxidative stress or a marker indicating the recent intensification of antioxidant processes.

This paper utilizes qualitative and quantitative analysis to examine the careers of foreign (non-EU) musicians living and working in Europe, and in particular, the second phase of a career in classical music of Japanese musicians in France and Poland. It focuses on the endeavors of both male and female musicians to remain in the profession, in the face of a number of interrelated sources of inequality (i.e., socio-cultural origins, ethnicity, gender and class) (Winker/Degele, 2011) that have a structuring impact on their professional and life decisions. This analysis foregrounds ethnicity (nationality), socio-cultural origins, and socially contextualized gender as the most significant elements in the second stage of the career-making process. In other words, this article takes an intersectional stance (Crenshaw, 1995) to examine the process of performing a “modest” career in music for male and female Japanese migrant artists as a process of “working out a compromise” between what is desired (a passion for music and aesthetic satisfaction), what is professionally achievable (in France and Poland), and what is expected upon an eventual return to Japan.

An unusual residual dipolar coupling of methylene protons was recorded in NMR spectra because aromatic zephycandidine has preferential orientation at the external magnetic field. The observed splitting contains contribution from the dipole–dipole D-coupling and the anisotropic component of J-coupling. Absolute values of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility |Δχax| are larger for protic solvents because of the hydrogen-bonding compared to aprotic solvents for which polar and dispersion forces are more important. The energy barrier for the reorientation due to hydrogen-bonding is 1.22 kJ/mol in methanol-d4, 0.85 kJ/mol in ethanol-d6 and 0.87 kJ/mol in acetic acid-d6. In dimethyl sulfoxide-d6, 1.08 kJ/mol corresponds to the interaction of solvent lone pair electrons with π-electrons of zephycandidine. This energy barrier decreases for acetone-d6 which has smaller electric dipole moment. In acetonitrile-d3, there is no energy barrier which suggests solvent ordering around the solute due to the solvent-solvent interactions. The largest absolute values of the magnetic anisotropy are observed for aromatic benezene-d6 and tolune-d8 which have their own preferential orientation and enhance the order in the solution. The magnetic anisotropy of “isolated” zephycandidine, not hindered by intermolecular interaction could be estimated from the correlation between Δχax and cohesion energy density.

Background: Investigation of the $_{62}^{140}\mathrm{Sm}_{78}$ nucleus, situated in the area close to the magic $N=82$ neutron shell, offers the opportunity to find and study interesting phenomena resulting from the interplay of collective and other degrees of freedom.Purpose: Experimental identification of low-spin low-energy levels, particularly ${0}^{+}$, in $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ and theoretical interpretation within the collective general Bohr Hamiltonian (GBH) model.Method: The $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ angular correlation technique for $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ radiation after the $\ensuremath{\beta}$/EC decay of $^{140}\mathrm{Eu}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ and $^{140}\mathrm{Gd}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{140}\mathrm{Eu}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ was used to determine spins of excited states of $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$. The $^{140}\mathrm{Gd}$ and $^{140}\mathrm{Eu}$ nuclei were produced in the $^{104}\mathrm{Pd}+^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ reaction at the HIL UW cyclotron. In the theoretical part the full five-dimensional GBH model was applied in two variants: the simple phenomenological Warsaw model and the microscopic version with six inertial functions and a potential calculated from mean-field theory.Results: The spin and parity of six low spin (0,1,2) low lying excited levels of $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ were measured. Two new states at around 2 MeV were identified. A analysis of the consequences of possible admixtures on the determination of the spin of a level was performed. The theoretical models applied successfully describe most of the spectrum of $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ giving hints on the origin of the states observed in the experiment.Conclusions: Significant softness against nonaxial deformation seems to be essential to interpret the properties of $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$. Further experimental studies are needed to check if some low-energy excitations are not deformation driven.

Lateral flow immunoassays are low cost, rapid and highly efficacious point-of-care devices, which have been used for SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing by professionals. However, there is a lack of understanding about how self-administered tests are used by the general public for mass testing in different environmental settings. The purpose of this study was to assess the user experience (UX) (including usability) of a self-testing kit to identify COVID-19 antibodies used by a representative sample of the public in their cars, which included 1544 participants in Northern Ireland. The results based on 5-point Likert ratings from a post-test questionnaire achieved an average UX score of 96.03% [95% confidence interval (CI) 95.05–97.01%], suggesting a good degree of user experience. The results of the Wilcoxon rank sum tests suggest that UX scores were independent of the user’s age and education level although the confidence in this conclusion could be strengthened by including more participants aged younger than 18 and those with only primary or secondary education. The agreement between the test result as interpreted by the participant and the researcher was 95.85% [95% CI 94.85–96.85%], Kappa score 0.75 [95% CI 0.69–0.81] (indicating substantial agreement). Text analysis via the latent Dirichlet allocation model for the free text responses in the survey suggest that the user experience could be improved for blood-sample collection, by modifying the method of sample transfer to the test device and giving clearer instructions on how to interpret the test results. The overall findings provide an insight into the opportunities for improving the design of SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing kits to be used by the general public and therefore inform protocols for future user experience studies of point-of-care tests.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the dynamics and longevity of the humoral immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and assess the performance of professional use of the UK-RTC AbC-19 Rapid Test lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for the target condition of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein IgG antibodies.DesignNationwide serological study.SettingNorthern Ireland, UK, May 2020–February 2021.ParticipantsPlasma samples were collected from a diverse cohort of individuals from the general public (n=279), Northern Ireland healthcare workers (n=195), pre-pandemic blood donations and research studies (n=223) and through a convalescent plasma programme (n=183). Plasma donors (n=101) were followed with sequential samples over 11 months post-symptom onset.Main outcome measuresSARS-CoV-2 antibody levels in plasma samples using Roche Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgA/IgM, Abbott SARS-CoV-2 IgG and EuroImmun IgG SARS-CoV-2 ELISA immunoassays over time. UK-RTC AbC-19 LFIA sensitivity and specificity, estimated using a three-reference standard system to establish a characterised panel of 330 positive and 488 negative SARS-CoV-2 IgG samples.ResultsWe detected persistence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies for up to 10 months post-infection, across a minimum of two laboratory immunoassays. On the known positive cohort, the UK-RTC AbC-19 LFIA showed a sensitivity of 97.58% (95.28% to 98.95%) and on known negatives, showed specificity of 99.59% (98.53 % to 99.95%).ConclusionsThrough comprehensive analysis of a cohort of pre-pandemic and pandemic individuals, we show detectable levels of IgG antibodies, lasting over 46 weeks when assessed by EuroImmun ELISA, providing insight to antibody levels at later time points post-infection. We show good laboratory validation performance metrics for the AbC-19 rapid test for SARS-CoV-2 spike protein IgG antibody detection in a laboratory-based setting.

The spectroscopic properties of 1 at% Pr3+ doped δ-BiB3O6 (BIBO) single crystal were investigated. The absorption, emission and excitation spectra were studied at low (10 K) and at room temperature, with the emission and absorption spectra showing clear polarization dependence. The strongest observed luminescence band corresponds to the 1D2 → 3H4 transition at 610 nm. Energy levels of Pr3+ in δ-BIBO host were assigned on the basis of low temperature absorption and emission measurements. The number of crystal field levels derived implies that Pr3+ ions are located in one crystal site in the BIBO host. Decay time of the praseodymium 3P0 emission was unusually short and the 1D2 decay was non-exponential. The modified Judd-Ofelt intensity formalism was used to analyze the experimental data. The Ωλ parameters, branching ratios and electric dipole transition probabilities were determined. The stimulated emission cross-sections σ for the 5D0 → 3HJ transitions were also evaluated in this system.

Oil sludges are wastes from the oil industry containing complex mixtures of oil hydrocarbons, water, sediments,\ud and heavy metals. These wastes are of main importance for the petroleum industry since it is estimated that more\ud than a billion tons have been stored worldwide. There are several types of oil sludges, but the oil tank bottom\ud sludges are the most studied. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse a variety of oil sludges to establish a detail\ud characterisation, with fast and reliable methods before selecting a suitable treatment. Five sludges were analysed\ud in this study: an oil drilling, oil refinery, oil-water separator, and two waste engine oil sludges. This is a rare\ud report detailing the use of high-field (500 MHz) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to determine oil and water\ud contents in oil sludges, which are more commonly analysed by low-field NMR (below 100 MHz). The proposed\ud NMR procedure was validated by the analysis of oil-water calibration standards (experimental errors < 15%).\ud There was a good agreement among the data obtained from the 1D proton spectra and the Carr-Purcell-\ud Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) T2 decays (percentage differences < 5%). The T2 decays data showed that all sludges\ud had only two components attributed to oil and water, and their relative ratios were determined. The sediment\ud content was determined by the oven-drying method, and the oil hydrocarbon fractions and trace elements were\ud assessed. The oil sludges presented different ranges in the oil, water, sediment and heavy metals contents. The\ud higher presence of C10-C18 aliphatic fractions in the oil from the sludges was an indicator of the potential to be\ud reused as diesel fuel. The sludges had potentially toxic elements (PTEs) values under the limit of the landfilling\ud standards established by the European Union, except for the WSS sludge. Ca and Fe had the highest concentrations\ud in all sludges, which are characteristic of these wastes. The techniques used in this study can be an\ud alternative for a rapid characterisation of the oil sludges, so their most appropriate treatment can be established.

Introduction The turnover and inability to consistently retain academic facial plastic surgeons is an issue that many academic departments of otolaryngology face. In addition to the financial costs of staff turnover and gaps in patient care, insufficient exposure of residents to key surgical procedures is a significant problem for residency programs. Objective To identify the most important reasons that lead faculty members to leave an academic facial plastic surgery (FPS) practice as well as features that may be associated with retention of FPS faculty. Methods Members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) and the Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology (AADO) were administered an anonymous, online survey. For both groups, we evaluated demographic factors, reasons for choosing academic careers, contributors to faculty turnover, as well as strategies for retention. The frequency of the responses was analyzed. Results A total of 11.3% (135/1,200) of facial plastic surgery faculty responded to the faculty survey, with 59.1% (68/115) of current, academic surgeons participating, and a total of 16.7% (20/120) of department chairs responded to the chairs' survey. If a faculty member had left/was to leave, more control over practice was the most common reason between the two respondent groups. Of the five most important ways to increase faculty retention, more control over practice was the number one reason. Conclusion Chairs and facial plastic surgery faculty should strive to agree upon the amount of control over the academic practice to lead to higher retention, better patient care, and continued resident education.

Integration of signalling downstream of individual receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) is crucial to fine-tune cellular homeostasis during development and in pathological conditions, including breast cancer. However, how signalling integration is regulated and whether the endocytic fate of single receptors controls such signalling integration remains poorly elucidated. Combining quantitative phosphoproteomics and targeted assays, we generated a detailed picture of recycling-dependent fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signalling in breast cancer cells, with a focus on distinct FGF receptors (FGFRs). We discovered reciprocal priming between FGFRs and epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) that is coordinated at recycling endosomes. FGFR recycling ligands induce EGFR phosphorylation on threonine 693. This phosphorylation event alters both FGFR and EGFR trafficking and primes FGFR-mediated proliferation but not cell invasion. In turn, FGFR signalling primes EGF-mediated outputs via EGFR threonine 693 phosphorylation. This reciprocal priming between distinct families of RTKs from recycling endosomes exemplifies a novel signalling integration hub where recycling endosomes orchestrate cellular behaviour. Therefore, targeting reciprocal priming over individual receptors may improve personalized therapies in breast and other cancers.

The definition of luxury brands has been long debated among marketing scholars; however, understanding how consumers perceive luxury is important too. This research presents a new framework that includes antecedents reflecting external and internal points of reference, luxury accessibility levels that ultimately impact consumer behavior toward luxury brands. It is understood that consumers have different lived experiences and may also have access to different goods in the marketplace. Hence, the proposed framework contributes to the luxury marketing literature by highlighting these important antecedents which induce various perceptions of luxury. Three propositions are presented to summarize the framework, which also supports future research aims.
