The past two decades have been characterized by a growing body of research from diverse disciplines-child development, psychology, neuroscience, and economics, among others-demonstrating the importance of establishing a strong foundation in the early years of life. The research evidence has served to document the range of early childhood services that can successfully put children and families on the path toward lifelong health and well-being, especially those at greatest risk of poor outcomes. As early childhood interventions have proliferated, researchers have evaluated whether the programs improve children's outcomes and, when they do, whether the improved outcomes generate benefits that can outweigh the program costs. This study examines a set of evaluations that meet criteria for scientific rigor and synthesizes their results to better understand the outcomes, costs, and benefits of early childhood programs. The authors focus on evaluations of 115 early childhood programs serving children or parents of children from the prenatal period to age 5. Although preschool is perhaps the best-known early childhood intervention, the study also reviewed such programs as home visiting, parent education, government transfers providing cash and in-kind benefits, and those that use a combination of approaches. The findings demonstrate that most of the reviewed programs have favorable effects on at least one child outcome and those with an economic evaluation tend to show positive economic returns. With this expanded evidence base, policymakers can be highly confident that well-designed and -implemented early childhood programs can improve the lives of children and their families.

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKRS) has been reported in the treatment of brainstem metastases while dose volume toxicity thresholds remain mostly undefined. A retrospective review of 52 brainstem metastases in 44 patients treated with GKRS was completed. A median dose of 18 Gy (range 10–22 Gy) was prescribed to the tumor margin (median 50 % isodose). 25 patients had undergone previous whole brain radiation therapy. Toxicity was graded by the LENT-SOMA scale. Mean and median follow-up was 10 and 6 months. Only 3 of the 44 patients are living. Multiple brain metastases were treated in 75 % of patients. Median size of lesions was 0.134 cc, (range 0.013–6.600 cc). Overall survival rate at 1 year was 32 % (95 % CI 51.0–20.1 %) with a median survival time of 6 months (95 % CI 5.0–16.5). Local control rate at 6 months and 1 year was 88 % (95 % CI 70–95 %) and 74 % (95 % CI 52–87 %). Cause of death was neurologic in 17 patients, non-neurologic in 20 patients, and unknown in four. Four patients experienced treatment related toxicities. Univariate analysis of tumor volume revealed that volume greater than 1.0 cc predicted for toxicity. A strategy of using lower marginal doses with GKRS to brain stem metastases appears to lead to a lower local control rate than seen with lesions treated within the standard dose range in other locations. Tumor size greater than 1.0 cc predicted for treatment-related toxicity.

High-resolution reconstruction of reaction dynamics in nuclear-physics experiments with radioactive beams requires accurate knowledge of the beam-particle trajectories and the precise alignment of detectors with respect to the reaction target. In many cases, sub-millimeter position measurements of fragile beam-tracking and particle–detector systems are essential. We have constructed a laser-based alignment system (LBAS) which is a non-contact, high-precision alignment tool designed for applications where excellent spatial positioning must be achieved. The working principles and performance of the laser-based alignment system are presented.

Constraints on the Equation of State for symmetric matter (equal neutron and proton numbers) have been extracted from energetic collisions of heavy ions over a range of energies. Collisions of neutron-deficient and neutron-rich heavy ions now provide initial constraints on the EoS of neutron-rich matter at sub-saturation densities from isospin diffusions and neutron proton ratios. The sequential breakup of $E/A=65.5\text{-MeV}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{7}\mathrm{Be}$ and $E/A=36.6\text{-MeV}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ projectiles excited through inelastic interactions with $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ target nuclei has been studied. For events where the target nucleus remained in its ground state, significant alignment of the excited projectile's spin axis parallel or antiparallel to the beam direction was observed. This unusual spin alignment was found to be largely independent of the projectile's scattering angle and it was deduced that the target nucleus has a significant probability of changing its spin orientation during the interaction. It is proposed that the unusual spin alignment is a consequence of the molecular structure of the $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ nucleus.

The 9Be(28Mg,27Na) one-proton removal reaction with a large proton separation energy of Sp(28Mg)=16.79 MeV is studied at intermediate beam energy. Coincidences of the bound 27Na residues with protons and other light charged particles are measured. These data are analyzed to determine the percentage contributions to the proton removal cross section from the elastic and inelastic nucleon removal mechanisms. These deduced contributions are compared with the eikonal reaction model predictions and with the previously measured data for reactions involving the re- moval of more weakly-bound protons from lighter nuclei. The role of transitions of the proton between different bound single-particle configurations upon the elastic breakup cross section is also quantified in this well-bound case. To improve the effective interactions in the $pf$ shell, it is important to measure the single-particle and single-hole states near the $N$ $=$ 28 shell gap. In this paper, the neutron spectroscopic factors of hole states from the unstable neutron-rich ${}^{45}$Ar ($Z$ $=$ 18,$N$ $=$ 27) nucleus have been studied using the ${}^{1}$H(${}^{46}$Ar,$d$) ${}^{45}$Ar transfer reaction in inverse kinematics. Comparison of our results with the particle states of ${}^{45}$Ar produced in ${}^{2}$H(${}^{44}$Ar, $p$) ${}^{45}$Ar reaction shows that the two reactions populate states with different angular momenta. Using the angular distributions, we are able to confirm the spin assignments of four low-lying states of ${}^{45}$Ar. These are the ground state (${f}_{7/2}$), the first-excited state (${p}_{3/2}$), and the ${s}_{1/2}$ and ${d}_{3/2}$ states. While large basis shell-model predictions describe spectroscopic properties of the ground and ${p}_{3/2}$ states very well, they fail to describe the ${s}_{1/2}$ and ${d}_{3/2}$ hole states.

The interaction of an E/A=70 - MeV 7Be beam with a Be target was used to populate levels in 6Be following neutron knockout reactions. The three-body decay of the ground and first excited states into the alpha+p+p exit channel were detected in the High Resolution Array. Precise three-body correlations extracted from the experimental data allowed us to obtain insight into the mechanism of the three-body democratic decay. The correlation data are in a good agreement with a three-cluster-model calculation and thus validate this theoretical approach over a broad energy range., 5 pages, 7 figures; Corrected typos

The angular dependence of proton-proton correlation functions is studied in central $^{40}Ca+^{40}Ca$ and $^{48}Ca+^{48}Ca$ nuclear reactions at E=80 MeV/A. Measurements were performed with the HiRA detector complemented by the 4$\pi$ Array at NSCL. A striking angular dependence in the laboratory frame is found within p-p correlation functions for both systems that greatly exceeds the measured and expected isospin dependent difference between the neutron-rich and neutron-deficient systems. Sources measured at backward angles reflect the participant zone of the reaction, while much larger sources observed at forward angles reflect the expanding, fragmenting and evaporating projectile remnants. The decrease of the size of the source with increasing momentum is observed at backward angles while a weaker trend in the opposite direction is observed at forward angles. The results are compared to the theoretical calculations using the BUU transport model.

We report final-state-exclusive measurements of the light charged fragments in coincidence with 26Ne residual nuclei following the direct two-proton removal from a neutron-rich 28Mg secondary beam. A Dalitz-plot analysis and comparisons with simulations show that a majority of the triple- coincidence events with two protons display phase-space correlations consistent with the (two-body) kinematics of a spatially-correlated pair-removal mechanism. The fraction of such correlated events, 56(12) %, is consistent with the fraction of the calculated cross section, 64 %, arising from spin S = 0 two-proton configurations in the entrance-channel (shell-model) 28Mg ground state wave function. This result promises access to an additional and more specific probe of the spin and spatial correlations of valence nucleon pairs in exotic nuclei produced as fast secondary beams., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Deviations from the isobaric multiplet mass equation are presented and discussed for the $A=7$, $T=3/2$ quartet and the $A=8$, $T=2$ quintet.

The interactions of an E/A=70-MeV {sup 9}C beam with a Be target was used to populate levels in Be, B, and C isotopes, which undergo decay into many-particle exit channels. The decay products were detected in the HiRA array and the level energies were identified from their invariant mass. Correlations between the decay products were examined to deduce the nature of the decays, specifically to what extent all the fragments were created in one prompt step or whether the disintegration proceeded in a sequential fashion through long-lived intermediate states. In the latter case, information on the spin of the level was also obtained. Of particular interest is the five-body decay of the {sup 8}C ground state, which was found to disintegrate in two steps of two-proton decay passing through the {sup 6}Be{sub g.s.} intermediate state. The isobaric analog of {sup 8}C{sub g.s.} in {sup 8}B was also found to undergo two-proton decay to the isobaric analog of {sup 6}Be{sub g.s.} in {sup 6}Li. A 9.69-MeV state in {sup 10}C was found to undergo prompt four-body decay to the 2p + 2{alpha} exit channel. The two protons were found to have a strong enhancement in the diproton region and the relativemore » energies of all four p-{alpha} pairs were consistent with the {sup 5}Li{sub g.s.} resonance.« less

Single-neutron-transfer measurements using (p,d) reactions have been performed at 33 MeV per nucleon with proton-rich Ar-34 and neutron-rich Ar-46 beams in inverse kinematics. The extracted spectroscopic factors are compared to the large-basis shell-model calculations. Relatively weak quenching of the spectroscopic factors is observed between Ar-34 and Ar-46. The experimental results suggest that neutron correlations have a weak dependence on the asymmetry of the nucleus over this isotopic region. The present results are consistent with the systematics established from extensive studies of spectroscopic factors and dispersive optical-model analyses of Ca40-49 isotopes. They are, however, inconsistent with the trends obtained in knockout-reaction measurements.

$^{8}\mathrm{C}$ is found to decay to four protons and an $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particle in two $2p$ emission steps. The correlations between the protons in the first step ($^{8}\mathrm{C}$ to $^{6}\mathrm{Be}$) exhibit a significant enhancement in the region of the decay phase space where the two protons have small relative energy, a region sometimes called the diproton region. The decay of the isobaric analog of $^{8}\mathrm{C}$ in $^{8}\mathrm{B}$ is also found to decay by $2p$ emission. This is the first case of isospin-allowed $2p$ decay between isobaric analog states.

Spectroscopic factors have been extracted for proton rich 34Ar and neutron rich 46Ar using the (p,d) neutron transfer reaction. The experimental results show little reduction of the ground state neutron spectroscopic factor of the proton rich nucleus 34Ar compared to that of 46Ar. The results suggest that correlations, which generally reduce such spectroscopic factors, do not depend strongly on the neutron-proton asymmetry of the nucleus in this isotopic region as was reported in knockout reactions. The present results are consistent with results from systematic studies of transfer reactions but inconsistent with the trends observed in knockout reaction measurements., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. submitted to PRL

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immunological impact of combining neoadjuvant total androgen suppression (TAS) with radiotherapy (xRT) in the treatment of prostate cancer by monitoring blood cytokine levels.Participants were stage I-II prostate cancer patients receiving xRT alone (n=18) or TAS+xRT (n=19) under the procedures outlined in RTOG protocols #94-08 and #94-13. Peripheral blood samples were collected immediately prior to TAS (xRT+TAS group), immediately prior to xRT, 24 hours after initiation of xRT, and weekly during xRT. Samples were monitored for the immunoregulatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6 and transforming growth factor (TGF)beta using ELISA procedures.Following initiation of xRT, both patient groups demonstrated an immediate elevation of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1beta and IL-6 in their plasma. These cytokine levels appeared to peak after 1-2 weeks of xRT before returning toward pre xRT levels. In contrast, the profibrotic cytokine TGFbeta appeared to decrease immediately following initiation of xRT, but, subsequently, underwent two distinct waves of elevation, occurring at 1-2 weeks and 5-6 weeks into the xRT. Surprisingly, while the temporal pattern of plasma cytokine response was similar in both treatment groups, the magnitude of cytokine expression was noticeably different, appearing to be significantly affected by the addition of TAS. Indeed, administration of neoadjuvant TAS appeared to bring about a marked elevation of IL-1beta and IL-6 and a significant reduction in TGFbeta when compared to patients receiving xRT alone.The precise mechanisms underlying this TAS-related increase of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1beta and IL-6 and decrease of the profibrotic cytokine TGFbeta remain unclear. However, previous reports have documented that androgens tend to be immunosuppressive in nature. It is conceivable, therefore, that administration of TAS shifts the ratio of proinflammatory and profibrotic cytokines toward a more immunostimulatory state.

Expérience à MSU-NSCL; International audience; The isospin dependence of two proton correlations is studied in 40Ca+40Ca and 48Ca+48Ca collisions at E/A = 80 MeV. Measurements were performed with the HiRA detector array complemented by the 4π Ball at NSCL. We observe a strong isospin dependence of the ppcorrelation functions; however the emitting source radius extracted using the imaging technique yields no sensitivity to the isospin of the reaction system. We interpret this result as a consequence of smaller fraction of fast proton emission in the neutron rich 48Ca system.

During hair coloring a number of disulfide bonds in cystine are oxidized (1) to create cysteic acid, forming binding sites for metal ions such as Ca(2+ )and Cu(2+ )from tap water (2). The increased uptake of these metals can have a detrimental impact on fiber properties-for example, reducing shine and causing a poor wet and dry feel (3). In addition, the increased uptake of copper can also contribute to further fiber damage during subsequent coloring due to its ability to take part in metal-induced radical chemistry (4). It is important to know where in the fibers these metals are located in order to either effectively remove these metals or control their chemistry. Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) has been used to locate the calcium and copper within hair that has been treated with a colorant and washed multiple times in tap water containing these ions. Untreated hair is used as a baseline standard material. Images with up to 50-nm spatial resolution of the preferential locations of calcium uptake were obtained, showing a high concentration of calcium in the cuticle region of colored hair, specifically in the sulfur-rich regions (A-layer and exocuticle).

Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1) is known to radioprotect the gastrointestinal tract, but the mechanism by which this protection occurs remains unclear. These studies were undertaken to investigate whether the radioprotective potential of IL-1 may be linked to an ability to reduce apoptosis within the gastrointestinal crypts.IL-1 was administered to C57Bl/6 mice 24 hours prior to receiving 8 Gy abdominal X-irradiation (xRT). At designated times, experimental mice were sacrificed, jejunal tissue removed, and paraffin-embedded sections analyzed for apoptosis indices (AI) and immunohistochemical determination of active caspase-3, -8 and -9.AI data demonstrated that 8 Gy irradiation resulted in a marked jejunal apoptotic response, but IL-1 pretreatment significantly attenuated this response. Concomitant with this attenuation, reduced levels of caspase-3 and 9, but not caspase-8, activation were observed, particularly within goblet cells.The results outlined herein suggest that radioprotection by IL-1 is mediated, at least in part, through a reduction in the apoptotic response which appears to involve down-regulation of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway.
