Abstract

Excited states of 17N, 18N and 19N were investigated through the measurement of gamma rays, following their population via deep-inelastic reactions induced by an 18O beam (7 MeV/u) on a thick 181Ta target. The experimental setup comprised the AGATA+PARIS detection system, coupled to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. In the 17N nucleus, the analysis of gamma-ray transitions de-exciting two states around 4-5 MeV clearly pointed to discrepancies with the lifetime values reported in literature. Three new gamma rays were observed in 18N at the energies of 1662.3 (3) keV, 2073.4 (8) keV and 2300.9 (8) keV, and hints for other two new transitions around 1566 keV and 1720 keV were found. In addition, a new transition with energy of 2489.7 (8) keV was observed in 19N.

Abstract

International audience; High-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy of N18 is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an O18 beam on a Ta181 target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in N18 below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 01− and 12− excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in N16 and N18, for the first time. Understanding the N18 structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range in products of low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions, with complex velocity distributions. The method is based on a detailed study of Doppler-broadened $$\gamma $$ γ -ray lineshapes. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the $$^{18}\text {O}(7.0\, \text {MeV/u})+\,^{181}\text {Ta}$$ 18 O ( 7.0 MeV/u ) + 181 Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in $$^{17}\text {O}$$ 17 O and $$^{19}\text {O}$$ 19 O , with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the $$\sim 20{-}400\,\text {fs}$$ ∼ 20 - 400 fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by $$\gamma $$ γ -tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

Abstract

International audience; For a few years, the medical cyclotron Proteus C-235 at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice in Kraków, Poland has been regularly used for nuclear structure experiments. One of the ongoing studies is focused on the γ decay of collective states populated in (p, p0γ) reactions. In a recent experiment, γ decays of excited states in the energy region of the Pygmy Dipole States in 208Pb have been observed. Good efficiency and energy resolution provided by the PARIS clusters and LaBr3:Ce scintillators facilitate a comparison of the obtained energy spectra with previous measurements of pygmy states in this nucleus.

Abstract

Excited states in Sn-133 were investigated through the beta decay of In-133 at the ISOLDE facility. The ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) provided isomer-selective ionization for In-133, allowing us to study separately, and in detail, the beta-decay branch of In-133 J(pi)= (9/2(+)) ground state and its J(pi) = (1/2(-)) isomer.Thanks to the large spin difference of the two beta-decaying states of In-133, it is possible to investigate separately the lower and higher spin states in the daughter, Sn-133, and thus to probe independently different single-particle and single-hole levels. We report here new gamma transitions observed in the decay of In-133, including those assigned to the deexcitation of the neutron-unbound states.

Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics - Extremes of the Nuclear Landscape -- AUG 26-SEP 02, 2018 -- Zakopane, POLAND, WOS: 000463866500052, Recent ab initio calculations pointed out the importance of the three-body terms of the nuclear interaction, in the description of the structure of n-rich systems. The state lifetimes in light n-rich carbon and oxygen nuclei have been predicted to be sensitive to the three-body terms and, in this context, an experiment, aiming at the measurement of these lifetimes, was performed in GANIL in July 2017 with the AGATA and PARIS arrays coupled to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Abstract

International audience; An experiment aiming at measuring lifetimes of the second 2+ excited states in neutron-rich C and O isotopes was recently performed at the GANIL laboratory, in France. In these nuclei, recent ab initio calculations provide a detailed description of the nuclear excited states, predicting a strong sensitivity of the electromagnetic transition probabilities to the details of the nucleon–nucleon interactions, especially in connection with the role played by the three-body (NNN) forces. Thus, the measurement of 2 + states lifetimes in this region will be a stringent test of the importance of including the NNN forces in describing the electromagnetic properties of selected nuclear states. This contribution reports on the status of the experimental analysis for the case of lifetimes in 20O.

Abstract

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42.

Abstract

K. Hadyńska-Kl¸ek et al. ; 7 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42 were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 02+ has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A∼40 mass region is discussed. 17. Giant Dipole Resonance in Highly Excited Nuclei: Does the Width Saturate?

Abstract

We examine the behavior of the width of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) at high excitation energies and show, based on new detailed measurements together with a reanalysis of previous experimental results, that the GDR width in Sn and nearby mass compound nuclei continues to increase up to final-state temperatures $T\ensuremath{\sim}3.2\mathrm{MeV}$. These temperatures correspond to the highest energies at which the GDR width can be extracted reliably from existing data.

Abstract

It is shown that in the mass-asymmetric reaction, 12C+24,26Mg and 12C+58,64Ni, at EpA = 6–11 MeV/u, the two types of γ-ray emission, statistical GDR decay and bremsstrahlung radiation, may be disentangled using angular distribution measurements. The analyzed data give information on the GDR built on excited states as well as on the bremsstrahlung process. The extracted GDR parameters and bremsstrahlung parameters for 12C+24,26Mg are in general in agreement with the systematics. However, the inverse slope parameter. E0, depends on γ-ray energy and as a result the bremsstrahlung cross-section at low and high Eγ energies is lower than expected for constant E0 value.

Abstract

Gamma-rays, charged particles and evaporation residue products from 18O+100Mo collisions at E(18O)=125 to 217 MeV have been measured in order to understand better the width evolution of the GDR in hot nuclei. Detailed angular distributions of all reaction products are used to determine important preequilibrium and bremsstrahlung effects and the giant-dipole parameters as a function of temperature. Results show the GDR width increasing with final-state temperature up to T=2.5 MeV, in contrast with previous works which argue for a saturation of the width in this energy range.

Abstract

We present evidence that the isospin mixing studied in a consistent way in highly excited 32S, 36Ar, 44Ti, and 60Zn nuclei at similar excitation energies, increases with increasing atomic number of self‐conjugate nuclei. The observed increase is similar to that predicted for ground‐state nuclei.

Abstract

The gamma-ray decay of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in the compound nucleus {sup 216}Rn formed with the reaction {sup 18}O+{sup 198}Pt at the bombarding energy of 96 MeV was investigated. High-energy gamma-ray spectra in coincidence with both prompt and delayed low-energy transitions were measured. The obtained GDR width at the average temperature {approx_equal}1 MeV was found to be larger than that at T=0 MeV and to be approximately constant as a function of spin. The measured width value of 7 MeV is found to be consistent with the predictions based on calculations of the nuclear shape distribution using the newest approach for the treatment of the fission barrier within the liquid drop model. The present study is the first investigation of the giant dipole resonance width from the fusion-evaporation decay channel in this nuclear mass range.

Abstract

The gamma-rays following the reaction 105 MeV 18O + 28Si have been measured using the EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays in order to investigate the predicted Jacobi shape transition. The high-energy gamma-ray spectrum from the GDR decay indicates a presence of large deformations in hot 46Ti nucleus, in agreement with new theoretical calculations based on the Rotating Liquid Drop model., NS2002 Conference. Abstract

The Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in 42Ca with a focus on a presumably superdeformed band was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy using the \gamma -ray spectrometer AGATA Demonstrator coupled to the DANTE charged particle detector array. First results are presented, including the refinement of the 42Ca level scheme.

Abstract

The experimental data for 11B(p,γ0)12C reaction in the proton energy range of 0.5–14 MeV were analysed within the conventional direct-semidirect capture model as well as within the modified approach of pure direct nucleon capture in the energy dependent effective nuclear field. The modified approach was found to provide a convenient tool for describing the reaction data in a broad energy range.

Abstract

Differential cross sections forγ-transitions to 12 states in28Si following nonresonant proton capture in27Al nuclei (Ep=1,625 keV) were measured and analysed in terms of the direct-semidirect model. The experimental data are reproduced only when the complex coupling constant with the GDR is enhanced for thef partial wave in the entrance channel.

Abstract

The proton capture cross sections for the reaction63Cu(p, γi)64Zn leading to several resolved states in the64Zn nucleus have been measured forE p =6.5–11.0 MeV. The excitation functions have been reproduced by the combined CN and DSD models. The extracted spectroscopic factors compared with those derived from the stripping reaction are found to show a distinct correlation.

Abstract

The experimental excitation function of the232Th(p, γ)233Pa reaction in the proton energy range 7–20 MeV was analysed within the direct-semidirect model. It was found that the confinement of the direct transition matrix element integral to the surface of the nucleus improves the fit of the theoretical curve to the experimental data. This conclusion was strengthened by the calculations carried out for the176Yb(p, γ)177Lu experimental reaction cross sections, available from the literature.

Abstract

Differential cross sections for nonresonant radiative capture of low energy protons (E p = 1,348 keV and 1,370 keV) by23Na nuclei exhibit features pointing to the virtual excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) mode. Theoretical analysis carried out within the framework of the direct — semidirect capture model reveals an enhanced coupling of the GDR with the incident protonf-wave consistent with the microscopic structure of the GDR in thes-d shell nuclei.

Abstract

An energy‐dependent effective potential approach was applied to generate the relative motion continuum wave functions in the region of subbarrier resonances in radiative proton capture reactions. The analysis of the (p, γ) reactions on 28Si, 20Ne and 12C target nuclei provided information about the parameters of the interaction potential at low energies as well as spectroscopic factors of resonant and bound states in the final nuclei.

Abstract

The high‐energy and discrete γ‐ray spectra, as well as the charged particle angular distribution have been measured in the reaction 105 MeV 18O+28Si using the EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays in order to investigate the predicted Jacobi shape transition in light nuclei. A comparison of the GDR line shape data with the predictions of the thermal shape fluctuation model, based on the most recent rotating liquid drop LSD calculations, shows evidence for such Jacobi shape transition in hot, rapidly rotating 46Ti. The found narrow low‐energy component in the GDR line shape is interpreted as the consequence both of the elongated shape and of the Coriolis effect.

Recently published direct capture model calculations for the $^{27}\mathrm{Al}$(p,${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{0}$,1) reaction are critically commented on with respect to the selection of the entrance channel interaction potential, which in our opinion led to an overestimate of the cross section values.

Abstract

Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in ^{42}Ca were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 0_{2}^{+} has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A∼40 mass region is discussed. Furthermore, the potential of Coulomb excitation as a tool to study superdeformation has been demonstrated for the first time.
