This paper investigates the overlooked effects of the patient recumbency positions on one of the key clinically used parameters in chest electrical impedance tomography (EIT) monitoring – the silent spaces. This parameter could impact medical decisions and interventions by indicating how well each lung is being ventilated. Yet it is largely dependent on assumptions of prior model at the reconstruction stage and the closely linked region of interest (ROI) during the final calculations. The potential effect of switching recumbency modes on silent spaces as a results of internal organ movements and consequently changes in initial assumptions, has been studied. The displacement and deformations caused by posture changes from supine to lateral recumbent were evaluated via simulations considering the simultaneous gravity-dependent movement and/or deformations of heart, mediastinum, lungs and the diaphragm. The reliability of simulations was verified against reference radiography images of an 18-month-old infant in supine and decubitus lateral positions. Inspecting a set of 10 patients from age range of 1 to 2 years old revealed improvements of up to 30% in the silent space parameters when applying posture consistent amendments as opposed to fixed model/ROI to each individual. To minimize the influence of image reconstruction technique on the results two different EIT reconstruction algorithms were implemented. The outcome emphasized the importance of including recumbency situation during chest EIT monitoring within the considered age range.

Abstract A search for highly electrically charged objects (HECOs) and magnetic monopoles is presented using 2.2 $$\hbox {fb}{^{-1}}$$ fb - 1 of $$p-p$$ p - p collision data taken at a centre of mass energy (E $$_{CM}$$ CM ) of 8 TeV by the MoEDAL detector during LHC’s Run-1. The data were collected using MoEDAL’s prototype Nuclear Track Detectord array and the Trapping Detector array. The results are interpreted in terms of Drell–Yan pair production of stable HECO and monopole pairs with three spin hypotheses (0, 1/2 and 1). The search provides constraints on the direct production of magnetic monopoles carrying one to four Dirac magnetic charges and with mass limits ranging from 590 GeV/c $$^{2}$$ 2 to 1 TeV/c $$^{2}$$ 2 . Additionally, mass limits are placed on HECOs with charge in the range 10e to 180e, where e is the charge of an electron, for masses between 30 GeV/c $$^{2}$$ 2 and 1 TeV/c $$^{2}$$ 2 .

In this study, we use mutual information to characterise statistical dependencies of seed and relativistic electron fluxes in the Earth's radiation belts on ultra-low-frequency (ULF) wave power measured on the ground and at geostationary orbit. The benefit of mutual information, in comparison to measures such as the Pearson correlation, lies in the capacity to distinguish non-linear dependencies from linear ones. After reviewing the property of mutual information and its relationship with the Pearson correlation for Gaussian bivariates, we present a methodology to quantify and distinguish linear and non-linear statistical dependencies that can be generalised to a wide range of solar wind drivers and magnetospheric responses. We present an application of the methodology by revisiting the case events studied by Rostoker et al. (1998). Our results corroborate the conclusions of Rostoker et al. (1998) that ULF wave power and relativistic electron fluxes are statistically dependent upon one another. We also estimate that the Pearson correlation is missing between 20 % and 30 % of the statistical dependency between ULF wave power and relativistic electron fluxes. Thus, the Pearson correlation underestimates the impact of ULF waves on energetic electron fluxes. However, we find that observed enhancements in relativistic electron fluxes correlate modestly, both linearly and non-linearly, with the ULF power spectrum when compared with values found in previous studies (Simms et al., 2014) and with correlational values found between seed electrons and ULF wave power for the same case events. Our results are indicative of the importance of incorporating data analysis tools that can quantify linear and non-linear interdependencies of various solar wind drivers.

An increasing number of different types of hydrological, land surface, and rainfall–runoff models exist to estimate streamflow in river networks. Results from various model runs from global to local scales are readily available online. However, the usability of these products is often limited, as they often come aggregated in spatial units which are not compatible with the desired analysis purpose. We present here an R package, a software library Hydrostreamer v1.0, which aims to improve the usability of existing runoff products by addressing the modifiable area unit problem and allows non-experts with little knowledge of hydrology-specific modelling issues and methods to use them for their analyses. Hydrostreamer workflow includes (1) interpolation from source zones to target zones, (2) river routing, and (3) data assimilation via model averaging, given multiple input runoff and observation data. The software implements advanced areal interpolation methods and area-to-line interpolation not available in other products and is the first R package to provide vector-based routing. Hydrostreamer is kept as simple as possible – intuitive with minimal data requirements – and minimises the need for calibration. We tested the performance of Hydrostreamer by downscaling freely available coarse-resolution global runoff products from the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP) in an application in 3S Basin in Southeast Asia. Results are compared to observed discharges as well as two benchmark streamflow data products, finding comparable or improved performance. We study here energetic-electron (E>30 keV) precipitation using cosmic noise absorption (CNA) during the sheath and ejecta structures of 61 interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) observed in the near-Earth solar wind between 1997 and 2012. The data come from the Finnish riometer (relative ionospheric opacity meter) chain from stations extending from auroral (IVA, 65.2∘ N geomagnetic latitude; MLAT) to subauroral (JYV, 59.0∘ N MLAT) latitudes. We find that sheaths and ejecta lead frequently to enhanced CNA (>0.5 dB) both at auroral and subauroral latitudes, although the CNA magnitudes stay relatively low (medians around 1 dB). Due to their longer duration, ejecta typically lead to more sustained enhanced CNA periods (on average 6–7 h), but the sheaths and ejecta were found to be equally effective in inducing enhanced CNA when relative-occurrence frequency and CNA magnitude were considered. Only at the lowest-MLAT station, JYV, ejecta were more effective in causing enhanced CNA. Some clear trends of magnetic local time (MLT) and differences between the ejecta and sheaths were found. The occurrence frequency and magnitude of CNA activity was lowest close to midnight, while it peaked for the sheaths in the morning and afternoon/evening sectors and for the ejecta in the morning and noon sectors. These differences may reflect differences in typical MLT distributions of wave modes that precipitate substorm-injected and trapped radiation belt electrons during the sheaths and ejecta. Our study also emphasizes the importance of substorms and magnetospheric ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves for enhanced CNA.

La planificación de la producción y tareas de mantenimiento en una red de equipos es una tarea cuya complejidad aumenta exponencialmente con el número de productos, equipos y tareas. Encontrar soluciones óptimas económicas o de eficiencia de recursos) se hace especialmente difícil para un planificador humano, más aún cuando se requiere tomar decisiones en breves periodos de tiempo. Este trabajo aborda el problema de distribución de carga en tiempo real y programación de limpiezas en una red de evaporadores industriales mediante herramientas de ayuda a la decisión basadas en optimización mixta entera con modelos. Las herramientas propuestas tienen en cuenta las preferencias de visualización de los operarios y están integradas con el sistema de supervisión de la planta. Además de proporcionar recomendaciones para la operación óptima de la red, se incluye un sistema semiautomático de actualización de modelos basado en datos históricos de operación.

Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der Aufzucht und Spermaproduktion bei Jungbullen. Von 47 in der Eigenleistungsprüfstation aufgezogenen finnischen Ayrshirebullen wurden lebendmasseentwicklung und Körpermasse kontrolliert. Mit 12 Monaten wurden die Bullen in die Besamungsstationen übernommen und ihre Spermaproduktion wurde registriert. Gleichzeitig mit den Ayrshirebullen wurde die Spermaerzeugung von 17 Bullen des Finnenrindes erfasst. Die beiden Rassen unterschieden sich weder in den qualitativen noch in den quantitativen Spermaeigenschaften. Zwischen den Nachkommengruppen gibt es offenscihtliche Unterschiede bei den einzelnen Spermaeigenschaften. Auch die einzelnen Bullen unterscheiden sich gesichert voneinander bei der Spermaproduktion. Damit ist es dem Züchter möglich, die Spermaeigenschaften durch Selektion zu verbessern. Zwischen dem Jugendwachstum und der Spermaproduktion wurden positive Korrelationen gefunden. Bullen, die eine bessere körperliche Entwicklung während der Aufzucht zeigten, erzeugten eine grössere Spermamenge im Untersuchungsweitraum auf der Besamungsstation. Durch die Auswahl der Jungbullen nach ihrer Eigenleistung Zunahme und Körpergrösse – wird die Spermaerzeugung bei den Zuchtbullen verbessert.

Purpose: To report our experience with full-dose 21 Gy IORT in early breast cancer patients after breast-conserving surgery to define most important selection factors., Methods: Seven hundred and fifty eight patients, subjected to conserving surgery and IORT, were retrospectively analyzed evaluating most important clinical outcomes., Results: Median follow up was 5.2 years. Results from Cox analyses defined 2 groups of patients, "suitable" (age > 50 years, non lobular histology, tumour size ≤ 2 cm, pN0 or pNmic, ki67 ≤ 20%, non triple negative receptor status and G1-G2) and "unsuitable" for IORT, with a higher rate of breast related events moving from "suitable" to "unsuitable" group. The 5 year rate of IBR is 1.8% in suitable group with significant differences versus unsuitable (1.8 vs. 11.6%, p < 0.005). Same differences between two groups were evidenced in true local relapse (0.6 vs. 6.9%, p < 0.005) and in new ipsilateral BC (1.1 vs. 4.7%, p < 0.015)., Conclusions: In our current practice we consider the following preoperative factors to select patients suitable for IORT: age > 50 years, absence of lobular histology, tumor size ≤ 2 cm, pN0 or pNmic, according to APBI consensus statement, including also ki67 ≤ 20%, non triple negative receptor status and G1-G2.

Purpose: With the aim of establishing clinical and technical criteria to homogenize radiotherapy practice, a working group of AIRO-Lombardia (Associazione Italiana di Radioterapia Oncologica--Gruppo regionale della Lombardia) has tried to define minimal requirements for radical and postoperative irradiation in prostate cancer. The document has been structured in such a way as to be also of interest to the urological and medical oncology communities., Methods: The working group, composed of representatives of most of the regional radiotherapy departments in the Lombardy region, had monthly meetings during 1996 and 1997. The document on minimal requirements has been derived from the participants' combined experience and knowledge, from review of the literature, and from a 1995 regional survey on current practice of prostate irradiation., Results: Minimal requirements for radical and postoperative irradiation of prostate cancer have been defined with respect to treatment strategies, pre-treatment diagnostic evaluation and staging, treatment prescription, preparation and execution, and quality assurance procedures., Conclusion: Standards of reference for minimal requirements in prostate cancer irradiation adapted to the regional structures and resources have been defined.

From January 1980 to December 1989, 86 patients with limited small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) were treated in our Institution. Sixty-eight of them were males, 18 females; mean age was 58 years (range: 40-74); Karnofsky index was 80 or higher. All patients received induction multiagent chemotherapy (CAV or CAVE), usually fractionated into 3/4 cycles. Radiotherapy was administered by means of a 10 MV Linear Accelerator, 2-3 Gy/day, 5 days/week. Radiation dose was 60 Gy for 39 patients, 50 Gy for 25 patients, and 30 Gy for 22 patients. Parallel opposed fields (AP and PA) were used for administering the 30-Gy dose, while higher doses were delivered by multiportal arrangement (3/4 fields). Overall survival (corrected Kaplan-Meier) was 21.3% and 13.4% at 2 and 3 years, respectively; 2 years' survival according to dose was 24.5% for 60 Gy, 19.9% and 11% for 50 and 30 Gy, respectively. Mean survival time (MST) was 14 months for 60 Gy, 13 months and 10 months, respectively, for 50 and 30 Gy. Survival and disease-free survival rates were similar in patients who received 50 and 60 Gy. No major complications related to irradiation were observed, not even in the group receiving the highest dose. Our data are similar to those reported in the literature.
