1. Secondary organic aerosol formation from hydroxyl radical oxidation and ozonolysis of monoterpenes

Abstract

Oxidation by hydroxyl radical (OH) and ozonolysis are the two major pathways of daytime biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) oxidation and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. In this study, we investigated the particle formation of several common monoterpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene and limonene) by OH-dominated oxidation, which has seldom been investigated. OH oxidation experiments were carried out in the SAPHIR (Simulation of Atmospheric PHotochemistry In a large Reaction) chamber in Jülich, Germany, at low NOx (0.01 ~ 1 ppbV) and low ozone (O3) concentration (< 20 ppbV). OH concentration and total OH reactivity (kOH) were measured directly, and through this the overall reaction rate of total organics with OH in each reaction system was quantified. Multi-generation reaction process, particle growth, new particle formation (NPF), particle yield and chemical composition were analyzed and compared with that of monoterpene ozonolysis. Multi-generation products were found to be important in OH-dominated SOA formation. The relative role of functionalization and fragmentation in the reaction process of OH oxidation was analyzed by examining the particle mass and the particle size as a function of OH dose. We developed a novel method which quantitatively links particle growth to the reaction rate of OH with total organics in a reaction system. This method was also used to analyze the evolution of functionalization and fragmentation of organics in the particle formation by OH oxidation. It shows that functionalization of organics was dominant in the beginning of the reaction (within two lifetimes of the monoterpene) and fragmentation started to play an important role after that. We compared particle formation from OH oxidation with that from pure ozonolysis. In individual experiments, growth rates of the particle size did not necessarily correlate with the reaction rate of monoterpene with OH and O3. Comparing the size growth rates at the similar reaction rates of monoterpene with OH or O3 indicates that, generally, OH oxidation and ozonolysis had similar efficiency in particle growth. The SOA yield of α-pinene and limonene by ozonolysis was higher than that of OH oxidation. Aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS) shows SOA elemental composition from OH oxidation follows a slope shallower than −1 in the O / C vs. H / C diagram, also known as Van Krevelen diagram, indicating that oxidation proceeds without significant loss of hydrogen. SOA from OH oxidation had higher H / C ratios than SOA from ozonolysis. In ozonolysis, a process with significant hydrogen loss seemed to play an important role in SOA formation.

Abstract

An in vitro fermentation was conducted to determine the effects of hainanmycin on protein degradation and populations of ammonia-producing bacteria. The substrates (DM basis) for in vitro fermentation consisted of alfalfa hay (31.7%), Chinese wild rye grass hay (28.3%), ground corn grain (24.5%), soybean meal (15.5%) with a forage: concentrate of 60:40. Treatments were the control (no additive) and hainanmycin supplemented at 0.1 (H0.1), 1 (H1), 10 (H10), and 100 mg/kg (H100) of the substrates. After 24 h of fermentation, the highest addition level of hainanmycin decreased total VFA concentration and increased the final pH. 3. Unipolar resistive switching with forming-free and self-rectifying effects in Cu/HfO2/n-Si devices

Abstract

One of the most effective methods integrating self-rectifying RRAM is alleviating sneak current in crossbar architecture. In this work, to investigate RRAMs with excellent properties of self-rectifying effect, simple Cu/HfO2/n-Si tri-layer devices are fabricated and investigated through I − V characteristic measurement. The experimental results demonstrate that the device exhibits forming-free behavior and a remarkable rectifying effect in low resistance state (LRS) with rectification ratio of 104 at ±1 V, as well as considerable OFF/ON ratio (resistive switching window) of 104 at 1 V. The formation and annihilation of localized Cu conductive filament plays a key role in the resistive switching between low resistance state (LRS) and high resistance state (HRS). In addition, intrinsic rectifying effect in LRS attributes to the Schottky contact between Cu filament and n-Si electrode. Furthermore, satisfactory switching uniformity of cycles and devices is observed. As indicated by the results, Cu/HfO2/n-Si devices have a high potential for high-density storage practical application due to its excellent properties.

4. Photoelectric Characteristics of Double Barrier Quantum Dots-Quantum Well Photodetector

Abstract

The photodetector based on double barrier AlAs/GaAs/AlAs heterostructures and a layer self-assembled InAs quantum dots and In0.15Ga0.85As quantum well (QW) hybrid structure is demonstrated. The detection sensitivity and detection ability under weak illuminations have been proved. The dark current of the device can remain at 0.1 pA at 100 K, even lower to 3.05×10-15 A, at bias of −1.35 V. Its current responsivity can reach about 6.8×105 A/W when 1 pw 633 nm light power and −4 V bias are added. Meanwhile a peculiar amplitude quantum oscillation characteristic is observed in testing. A simple model is used to qualitatively describe. The results demonstrate that the InAs monolayer can effectively absorb photons and the double barrier hybrid structure with quantum dots in well can be used for low-light-level detection.

Abstract

China is one of the first countries that produced textiles in the world. It has designed and developed a variety of equipment to facilitate textile work, for instance, reeling wheels for fiber processing, treadle spinning wheels for spinning, and looms for weaving cloth. These textile mechanisms can be found in the literature, and there are physical objects left as well. However, due to unclear descriptions of the transmission modes in the records and illustrations, as well as the long history and vast area of their use, a variety of designs with different structures may have been produced. Based on the generalized kinematic chain concept, this paper briefly describes the historical development of textile mechanisms in ancient China and analyzes the structures of mechanisms, such as reeling wheels, treadle spinning wheels, and looms. Finally, it explores the degree of freedom of the mechanisms to find feasible designs in line with functional requirements.

Abstract

Background In the wake of the COVID‐19 pandemic, preliminary research has reported a significant decline in physical activity (PA) and an increase in sedentary behaviour (SB) among typically developed children and adolescents. Limited research has looked at the current situation of PA and SB during this pandemic among children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID). This study investigated the situations about PA and SB among school‐aged children and adolescents with ID on China's mainland during the COVID‐19 outbreak. Methods In total, 837 parents of children and adolescents (ages 6–18 years) with ID from 15 special education schools of Shandong Province in China were recruited through convenience sampling in the study. Parents reported PA and SB among children and adolescents with ID through the Children's Leisure Activities Study Survey‐Chinese version (CLASS‐C) online questionnaires. Results From parents' reports, Chinese children and adolescents with ID during the COVID‐19 pandemic participated in approximately 10 min of moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity, and engaged in approximately 530 min of SB every day. Meanwhile, only 17.4% of children and adolescents with ID were able to achieve the recommendation of 60 min of daily moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity and 76.1% of children and adolescents with ID spent more than 2 h on SB per day. Additionally, the problems of decrease PA and excessive SB were more prominent in older adolescents with ID compared with younger children with ID. Conclusion In China, the low level of PA and high level of SB is particularly evident in children and adolescents with ID during the outbreak of COVID‐19. The great majority of children and adolescents with ID did not meet the recommended amount of PA while undergoing excessive SB under the long‐term home quarantine environment. Therefore, immediate attention and great effort should be made to deal with this severe situation among this vulnerable population in the mainland of China.

Abstract

Objectives The oldest old population has become the fastest growing segment with excess need of care and social support, it is crucial to improve the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of these populations. This study seeks to evaluate the health status and to investigate modifiable factors associated with health-related quality of life for oldest old adults in China. Design A cross-sectional population-based study. Setting Hainan Province in the south of China. Participants 1,278 adults aged 80 years or older. Methods HRQoL was assessed by three-level EuroQol-5D scale (EQ-5D-3L) and a visual analogue scale (VAS). Demographic and health-related variables were analysed by estimating mean values and standard deviations for continuous variables, percentages and standard deviations for categorical variables. Tobit regressions, ordinary least Squared (OLS) regressions and ordered probit regressions were adopted to determine the associated factors for overall HRQoL and for each health dimension. Results Anxiety/depression was the least reported problem while mobility was the most frequently reported with problem. Female respondents had lower EQ-5D score (0.76 vs. 0.86) and VAS score (66.55 vs. 69.84) than male respondents. Better health-related quality of life was significantly associated with higher BMI, no drinking habit, more leisure activities, living with family members, good sleeping quality, closer social and family connections, fewer numbers of drugs consumed per day, without having hearing or visual impairment, and fewer chronic conditions, after controlling for potential confounders. Conclusion Findings from this study suggested that quality of life was not only associated with age-related diseases, but also correlated with a range of health-related lifestyles, and factors indicating social and family support.

Abstract

This systematic review aimed to assess the impact of biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) use on the risk of fracture in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by conducting a pooled analysis of adjusted outcomes from individual studies.PubMed, Embase, and BioMed Central were searched up to 20th January 2021. Multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (OR) or matched estimates on the impact of bDMARDs on fracture risk were pooled.Nine studies were included. We found no statistically significant difference in the risk of fractures in RA patients using bDMARDs vs. non-users. On sensitivity analysis, we found no change in the significance of the effect size on exclusion of any study. There was no statistically significant difference in fracture risk in studies only on tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, as well as those including any bDMARDs. Pooled analysis of only three studies indicated a statistically significant reduction in vertebral fractures in bDMARD users vs. non-users.Within the ambit of several limitations of our review, there seems to be no impact of bDMARDs on the fracture risk in RA patients. Further studies evaluating the type and duration of bDMARD therapy with meticulous adjustment of confounding factors are required to strengthen current evidence.

20. Charge and spin coupling in magnetoresistive oxygen-vacancy strontium ferrate SrFeO3–δ

Abstract

Using magnetization, conductivity and x-ray scattering measurements, we demonstrate that the giant magnetoresistance of the oxygen-deficient ferrite SrFeO _2.875±0.02 is a consequence of the coupling between the charge and spin order parameters and the tetragonal to monoclinic structural distortion. Upon cooling the sample at T ≃ 120 K we find a shoulder in both field-cool and zero field cool magnetization data and the simultaneous appearance of incommensurate structural satellites observed using x-ray diffraction. These satellites are shown to be due to incommensurate charge ordering with the high temperature delocalized Fe ${}^{3.5+}$ ions becoming localized with a charge disproportion forming an incommensurate charge-ordered phase. Strong resonant enhancement of these satellites at the Fe L _III absorption edge confirms that this charge ordering is occurring at the Fe(2) sites. Further cooling increases the charge order correlation until T ≃ 62 K where there is a full structural transition from the tetragonal phase to a mononclinic phase. This causes a jump in the charge order wavevector from an incommensurate value of 0.610 to a commensurate ground state position of 5/8. This first-order structural transition displays considerable hysteresis as well as dramatic reductions in the magnetization, resistivity and magnetoresistance. The transition also causes an antiferromagnetic spin-ordering with a doubled unit cell along the c -axis. Well as observing new commensurate magnetic reflections at the Fe _III edge we also observed resonant enhancement at the oxygen K -edge showing considerable hybridization between the Fe 3d and oxygen 2p states at low temperatures. Our results show that the formation of a magnetic long-rage ordered ground state drives the charge ordering from an incommensurate ordering to a commensurate ground state. This is evidence of a strong coupling between the magnetic and charge order parameters which is the basis for the unusual magnetoresistive effects observed at the transition.

Abstract

Several studies have revealed that exposure to famine in early life was associated with higher body mass index(BMI) and waist circumference, and most of them used data from cross-sectional studies and defined those born before or after the famine period as non-exposed participants, which ignored the effects caused by age. Our objective was to study the effects of undernutrition in early life on overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity in those aged 54–56. This was a retrospective cohort study with the status at age of 54–56 as outcomes. 1092 participants born between 1959 and 1961 from 2015 wave of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were defined as exposed and 1616 born between 1955 and 1957 from 2011 wave of CHARLS were defined as control. We used the prevalence odds ratios(ORs) to estimate the risks of overweight, obesity, abdominal obesity, and stratified by famine severity and sex separately for comparisons. Exposed group had higher risks of overweight (OR 1.357, 95%CI 1.067,1.727) and obesity (OR 1.356, 95%CI 1.001,1.836) in women, not in men. Participants in exposed group were more likely to have abdominal obesity (OR 1.362, 95%CI 1.139,1.629), regardless of famine severity and gender. Undernutrition in early life increased the risks of overweight and obesity in women not in men. And the risk of abdominal obesity was increased with the experience of undernutrition at early age both in men and women.

Abstract

There are a number of concave circular blending surfaces with minor curvature radius in the corner of curved surface part, like complex mold cavity. Pencil-cut machining has shorter path and completer material remove than other strategies of clean-up machining which make it high efficiency, high precision, and high utilization rate of equipment. In this paper, contact between cutter and concave crescent cylinder (CCC) including cutter workpiece engagement (CWE) and in-cut cutter edge (ICCE) is studied based on an analytic method, and a prediction model of the cutting force for pencil-cut machining with the ball-end mill is established. The cutter, the CCC, and the feed direction for pencil-cut machining are parametrically defined. In cutter contact normal coordinate system, the analytic expressions of tool geometry, CCC, and the cutter sweep surface of the cutter are derived, and then the CWE is obtained by the intersection of the space surfaces, which the CWE in the tool coordinate is realized by the three-dimensional rotation transformation. The cutter edge curve is discreted into a series of infinitesimal element, based on the criteria of the cutter edge element in the CWE, an analytic algorithm to calculate the ICCE is proposed, and the precision of the boundary points can be further improved by the dichotomy. Combining ICCE with instantaneous chip thickness considering cutter run-out and micro-element milling force theories of ball-end mill, the prediction model of cutting force for pencil-cut machining of CCC with ball-end mill is established. A series of pencil-cut machining experiments and simulations were arranged. The performance of pulling milling is better than that of pushing milling. The CWE and ICCE obtained by the analytical method agree well with that of experiment and solid modeling simulation. Abstract

As a high efficient machining technology, five-axis flat end milling is applied to free-form surface more widely. Cutter workpiece engagement (CWE) is an important issue for studying the milling mechanics. In this paper, milling force prediction model for five-axis flat end milling of free-form surface is presented based on a new analytical CWE model. Free-form surface is discretized into a series of tiny inclined plane. Three-axis flat end milling of inclined plane being study object, considering that the depth of cut is stacked by a series of thin cutting layers, the parametric formulas of CWE boundary curves can be obtained by calculating the intersection between cutter geometry and each thin cutting layer. The CWE of five-axis flat end milling of inclined plane can be transformed from three-axis flat end milling of inclined plane. The effective boundary points of in-cut cutting edge are derived by intersecting the analytical boundary curves of CWE with the parameter formula of cutting edge. Then combined with elemental cutting theory, this paper establishes force model of five-axis flat end milling of inclined plane as well as free-form surface. The experiments and simulations of CWE of five-axis milling show that the results of analytical method are in reasonable agreement with those of experiments and only a slight error with those of solid modeling method. Further, the influence rules of curvature radius of tool path on the accuracy of analytical CWE model are explored. Arranged milling experiments show that predicted milling forces are in reasonable agreement with measured forces in trend and amplitude, validating the effectiveness of force model for five-axis flat end milling of free-form surface.

Abstract

Five-axis ball-end milling is widely used in energy, ship, aerospace, and other fields. As one of the difficulties in milling research, milling force is often critical to the processing efficiency and quality of part. For predicting the milling force of the five-axis ball-end milling better, this paper presents a cutting force coefficients identification model which is related to the instantaneous chip layer thickness and axial position angle considering the cutter run-out. For five-axis ball-end milling of the oblique plane, the relationship of feed direction, cutter axis vector, and machined surface is parameterized. The boundary curves of cutter workpiece engagement (CWE) are determined by intersecting spatial surfaces. The boundary curves are discretized, and an algorithm of in-cut cutting edge (ICCE) is proposed by defining the distance between discrete points and the cutting edge. Combining the instantaneous chip thickness considering arbitrary feed direction and cutter run-out, the five-axis milling force model of ball-end mill is established. Based on the undetermined coefficient method and the instantaneous average milling force of teeth, the cutting force coefficients identification model corresponding to the instantaneous chip layer thickness and the axial position angle is established. Furthermore, cutter run-out parameters are obtained combined with instantaneous measured milling force of single tooth. The experimental and simulation examples demonstrate that the CWE determined by the spatial surfaces is consistent with the experimental results. The ICCE is in good agreement with the simulation results based on the solid modeling method. A large number of milling experiments under different processing parameters show that the cutting force coefficients and cutter run-out parameters identification model can be effectively applied to five-axis ball-end milling.

Abstract

As a high precision and high efficiency cutting method, CNC milling of five axis is the first choice for manufacturing parts with complex sculptured surface. Milling force is one of the most important physical parameters in machining which affects the cutting vibration, cutting deformation, cutting heat, and surface quality directly. Aiming at the five-axis ball end milling of sculptured surface, a force predictive model with arbitrary cutter axis vector and feed direction is established. The conditions of micro-cutting edge of three-axis ball end mill involved in cutting are determined by space region limitation at the first. Then, after space rotation transformation, an analytic in-cut cutting edge (ICCE) method for five-axis ball end milling of oblique plane is proposed by judging micro-cutting edge one by one. Based on the idea of differential discretization, the machining of general complex surface can be regarded as a combination of a series of tiny oblique planes. Drawing on the idea to sculptured surface and combining micro-element milling force model and undeformed chip thickness model that is suitable for five-axis ball end milling with arbitrary feed direction, a milling force predictive model for five-axis ball end milling of sculptured surface is established. The results of simulations and experiments show that the ICCE determined by the space region limitation is consistent with the traditional Z-map method and the solid modeling method with high efficiency and precision. The measured force and the predictive force of the five-axis milling on sculptured surface are in good agreement in amplitude and trend, which proves the effectiveness of the milling force predictive model of five-axis ball end milling of sculptured surface.

Abstract

Milling force, closely related to machining efficiency and machining quality, is the most important technical parameter in computer numerical control machining. Aiming at five-axis flat-end milling, this paper proposes a milling force prediction model with arbitrary feed direction and cutter workpiece engagement (CWE). CWE, defining the interaction region between cutter and workpiece, is the basis for studying statics and dynamics of cutting. The efficiency of traditional solid modeling method is low and not suitable for large complex sculptured surface. Z-map method is also difficult to apply in five-axis flat-end milling. In response to this issue, analytic CWE model for five-axis flat-end milling of inclined plane is established by calculating the intersection of spatial surfaces; then, an algorithm is proposed to investigate the in-cut cutting edge. Different from the conventional slot cutting and half slot cutting processing, non-slot cutting processing with changing arbitrarily of cutter axis direction is used to calibrate the coefficients which are more suitable for five-axis machining. Combined with the instantaneous chip thickness considering cutter run-out, the cutting force coefficients which have quartic polynomial relationship with instantaneous chip thickness and the cutter run-out parameter identification model are established. The validity of this analytic model has been proved by experimental tests. The results also show that the measured milling force and predicted milling force are in good agreement in the aspect of the amplitude and trend in the different cutting depth, path interval, feed per tooth, and slope inclination angle, which verifies the efficiency of the coefficient identification model.

Abstract

Preoperative radiation therapy has been regarded as the optional neoadjuvant treatment to decrease local recurrence of rectal cancer in addition to surgery. However, its benefit in survival remained obscure. This study was aimed to measure the efficacy of preoperative radiation therapy for survival in stage II and III rectal cancer patients. Retrospective cohort study used the database of Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results program of the National Cancer Institute in the United States from 1988 to 2011. A total of 49439 patients diagnosed with primary rectal cancer who underwent surgery were included. Clinicopathological characteristics and rectal cancer-specific survival between surgery alone group and surgery plus preoperative radiation therapy group were compared. Rectal cancer patients in surgery plus preoperative radiation therapy group had significantly better survival than those in surgery alone group (72.70% vs. 66.61%, P < 0.001), as well as stratified by stages (stage II: 77.4% vs. 74.3%, P < 0.001; stage III: 68.3% vs. 58.6%, P < 0.001). However, this beneficial impact was only observed after 2000s (P < 0.001). Multivariate survival analysis revealed that preoperative radiation therapy was an independent predictor for better survival in stage III (hazard ratio, 0.795; 95% CI, 0.753-0.840; P < 0.001), but not in stage II (P = 0.70). Preoperative radiation therapy might bring a better survival in stage II and III rectal cancer patients, but only as an independent predictor for stage III patients. As time progressed, preoperative radiation therapy might yield more profit for stage II and III rectal cancer patients.

Abstract

Genetic influences on psychiatric disorders transcend diagnostic boundaries, suggesting substantial pleiotropy of contributing loci. However, the nature and mechanisms of these pleiotropic effects remain unclear. We performed analyses of 232,964 cases and 494,162 controls from genome-wide studies of anorexia nervosa, attention-deficit/hyper-activity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and Tourette syndrome. Genetic correlation analyses revealed a meaningful structure within the eight disorders, identifying three groups of inter-related disorders. Meta-analysis across these eight disorders detected 109 loci associated with at least two psychiatric disorders, including 23 loci with pleiotropic effects on four or more disorders and 11 loci with antagonistic effects on multiple disorders. The pleiotropic loci are located within genes that show heightened expression in the brain throughout the lifespan, beginning prenatally in the second trimester, and play prominent roles in neurodevelopmental processes. These findings have important implications for psychiatric nosology, drug development, and risk prediction.

Abstract

In this paper, the structural stabilities, elastic, electronic and magnetic properties of three binary Fe-Ni intermetallics with different structure under pressure have been systematically investigated by first-principle method based on density functional theory. The results indicated that the lattice parameters and bulk modulus of Fe-Ni compounds at zero pressure match well with other experimental data and available theoretical calculated values. The calculated energy-volume and pressure-volume expressed that all the compounds are mechanical stability under pressure, and the volume variation increase with the increasing iron content under pressure. The shear deformation resistant and volume deformation resistant are estimated by elastic constant Cij and bulk modulus B. Meanwhile, applied pressure improved the ductility of the Fe-Ni compounds, elastic anisotropy of three compounds under pressure are arranged in the following order: Fe3Ni>FeNi>FeNi3. Debye temperature ΘD of compounds gradually increase with the increase of iron contents and pressure, the temperature dependence of the linear thermal expansion coefficient α and heat capacity (CV and CP) are also calculated based on quasi-harmonic Debye model under pressure from 0 to 50GPa and various temperature. The results gain a better understanding of iron-nickel alloys.

Abstract

To analyze the correlation between transcutaneous oxygen pressure (P(tc)O(2)) and blood lactate in patients with septic shock. Fifty-sixpatients with septic shock were prospectively investigated. P(tc)O(2) was monitored continuously for 6 hours, and arterial blood gas was measured at baseline (T0) and 6 hours(T6). Records of P(tc)O(2),were analyzed for the correlation with lactate level and lactate clearance rate. P(tc)O(2) valuesin the high lactate clearance group and the low one were compared.The lowest value of P(tc)O(2) at T6 and duration of P(tc)O(2)40 mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa) were both correlated with lactate level and lactate clearance rateat T6.The low predictive value of P(tc)O(2) was 29 mmHg of lactate clearance under 20% with a sensitivity 85.2% and a specificity 65.5%. The low predictive value of P(tc)O(2) in high lactate clearance group was significantly higher than that in low lactate clearance group, while the duration of P(tc)O(2)40 mmHg was shorter than the latter. Abstract

An improved ion-pairing reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method coupled with evaporative light scattering detection (HPLC-ELSD) was developed to determine spectinomycin and its related substances in commercial samples. The method was validated in accordance with International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines. The specificity of the HPLC-ELSD method was similar to that of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) method, and repeatability and robustness were markedly improved relative to other reported methods due to our empirical evaluation of separation columns. Indeed, it is a more specific assay of spectinomycin than traditional microbiological techniques. The HPLC-ELSD method was used to evaluate the impurity profiles of eight compounds in seven spectinomycin batches from five different companies.
