The magnetic drift and the electric potential play an important role in microtearing destabilization by increasing the growth rate of this instability in the presence of collisions, while in electrostatic plasma micro-turbulence, zonal electric potentials can have a strong impact on turbulent saturation. A reduced model has been developed, showing that the Rechester–Rosenbluth model is a good model for the prediction of electron heat diffusivity by microtearing turbulence. Here, nonlinear gyrokinetic flux-tube simulations are performed in order to compute the characteristics of microtearing turbulence and the associated heat fluxes in tokamak plasmas and to assess how zonal flows and zonal fields affect saturation. This is consistent with a change in saturation mechanism from temperature corrugations to zonal field- and zonal flow-based energy transfer. It is found that removing the electrostatic potential causes a flux increase, while linearly stabilization is observed.

Understanding the time scales for diffusive processes and their degree of anisotropy is essential for modelling cosmic-ray transport in turbulent magnetic fields. We show that the diffusion time scales are isotropic over a large range of energy and turbulence levels, notwithstanding the high degree of anisotropy exhibited by the components of the diffusion tensor for cases with an ordered magnetic field component. The predictive power of the classical scattering relation as a description for the relation between the parallel and perpendicular diffusion coefficients is discussed and compared to numerical simulations. Very good agreement for a large parameter space is found, transforming classical scattering relation predictions into a computational prescription for the perpendicular component. We discuss and compare these findings and in particular the time scales to become diffusive with the time scales that particles reside in astronomical environments, the so-called escape time scales. The results show that, especially at high energies, the escape times obtained from diffusion coefficients may exceed the time scales required for diffusion. This paper reports on the development of reduced models for electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven transport in the pedestal. Model development is enabled by a set of 61 nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations with input parameters taken from pedestals in a broad range of experimental scenarios. The simulation data have been consolidated in a new database for gyrokinetic simulation data, the multiscale gyrokinetic database (MGKDB), facilitating the analysis. The modeling approach may be considered a generalization of the standard quasilinear mixing length procedure. The parameter η, the ratio of the density to temperature gradient scale length, emerges as the key parameter for formulating an effective saturation rule. With a single order-unity fitting coefficient, the model achieves an error of 15%. A similar model for ETG particle flux is also described. We also present simple algebraic expressions for the transport informed by an algorithm for symbolic regression.

The linear and nonlinear properties of ion-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence with adiabatic electrons are modeled for axisymmetric configurations for a broad range of triangularities δ, both negative and positive. Peak linear growth rates decrease with negative δ but increase and shift toward a finite radial wavenumber kx with positive δ. The growth-rate spectrum broadens as a function of kx with negative δ and significantly narrows with positive δ. The effect of triangularity on linear instability properties can be explained through its impact on magnetic polarization and curvature. Nonlinear heat flux is weakly dependent on triangularity for [Formula: see text], decreasing significantly with extreme δ, regardless of sign. Zonal modes play an important role in nonlinear saturation in the configurations studied, and artificially suppressing zonal modes increased nonlinear heat flux by a factor of about four for negative δ, increasing with positive δ by almost a factor of 20. Proxies for zonal-flow damping and drive suggest that zonal flows are enhanced with increasing positive δ.

Cosmic-ray transport in astrophysical environments is often dominated by the diffusion of particles in a magnetic field composed of both a turbulent and a mean component. This process, which is two-fold turbulent mixing in that the particle motion is stochastic with respect to the field lines, needs to be understood in order to properly model cosmic-ray signatures. One of the most important aspects in the modeling of cosmic-ray diffusion is that fully resonant scattering, the most effective such process, is only possible if the wave spectrum covers the entire range of propagation angles. By taking the wave spectrum boundaries into account, we quantify cosmic-ray diffusion parallel and perpendicular to the guide field direction at turbulence levels above 5% of the total magnetic field. We apply our results of the parallel and perpendicular diffusion coefficient to the Milky Way. We show that simple purely diffusive transport is in conflict with observations of the inner Galaxy, but that just by taking a Galactic wind into account, data can be matched in the central 5 kpc zone. Further comparison shows that the outer Galaxy at $>5\,$kpc, on the other hand, should be dominated by perpendicular diffusion, likely changing to parallel diffusion at the outermost radii of the Milky Way., Published in Springer Nature Applied Sciences

Visco-resistive magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, driven by a two-dimensional unstable shear layer that is maintained by an imposed body force, is examined by decomposing it into dissipationless linear eigenmodes of the initial profiles. The down-gradient momentum flux, as expected, originates from the large-scale instability. However, continual up-gradient momentum transport by large-scale linearly stable but nonlinearly excited eigenmodes is identified, and found to nearly cancel the down-gradient transport by unstable modes. The stable modes effectuate this by depleting the large-scale turbulent fluctuations via energy transfer to the mean flow. This establishes a physical mechanism underlying the long-known observation that coherent vortices formed from nonlinear saturation of the instability reduce turbulent transport and fluctuations, as such vortices are composed of both the stable and unstable modes, which are nearly equal in their amplitudes. The impact of magnetic fields on the nonlinearly excited stable modes is then quantified. Even when imposing a strong magnetic field that almost completely suppresses the instability, the up-gradient transport by the stable modes is at least two-thirds of the down-gradient transport by the unstable modes, whereas for weaker fields, this fraction reaches up to $98\%$. These effects are persistent with variations in magnetic Prandtl number and forcing strength. Finally, continuum modes are shown to be energetically less important, but essential for capturing the magnetic fluctuations and Maxwell stress. A simple analytical scaling law is derived for their saturated turbulent amplitudes. Straining of magnetic fields by large-scale shear flow, generally assumed to lead to intensification and generation of small scales, is re-examined in light of the persistent observation of large-scale magnetic fields in astrophysics. It is shown that, in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, unstable shear flows have the unexpected effect of sequestering magnetic energy at large scales, due to counteracting straining motion of nonlinearly excited large-scale stable eigenmodes. This effect is quantified via dissipation rates, energy transfer rates, and visualizations of magnetic field evolution by artificially removing the stable modes. The variation of pressure-gradient-driven turbulence with plasma $\beta$ (up to $\beta \approx 15\,\%$ ) is investigated in linear, magnetized plasma. The magnitude of magnetic fluctuations is observed to increase substantially with increasing $\beta$ . More importantly, parallel magnetic fluctuations are observed to dominate at higher $\beta$ values, with $\delta B_\parallel / \delta B_\perp \approx 2$ and $\delta B / B_0 \approx 1\,\%$ . Parallel magnetic fluctuations are strongly correlated with density fluctuations and the two are observed to be out of phase. The relative magnitude of and cross-phase between density and parallel magnetic field fluctuations are consistent with the dynamic pressure balance ( $P+{B_{0}^2}/{2\mu _0} = \textrm {constant}$ ). A local slab model theory for electromagnetic, modified drift Alfvén waves, including parallel magnetic fluctuations, shows partial agreement with experimental observations.

The quasilinear mixing-length approach to efficient prediction of transport in fusion devices is improved to account for the ‘Dimits’ upshift between linear and nonlinear critical pressure gradients in zonal-flow-saturated turbulence regimes. This modification uses the frequency mismatch between modes interacting turbulently to track changes in saturation efficiency. Near criticality, energy is transferred exclusively to stable eigenmodes, rapidly increasing the efficacy of the nonlinearity. The modified quasilinear model is able to predict below-threshold turbulent ion-temperature-gradient-driven transport accurately and also yields significantly improved predictions for trapped-electron-mode transport.

The Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability of a shear layer with an initially-uniform magnetic field in the direction of flow is studied in the framework of 2D incompressible magnetohydrodynamics with finite resistivity and viscosity using direct numerical simulations. The shear layer evolves freely, with no external forcing, and thus broadens in time as turbulent stresses transport momentum across it. As with KH-unstable flows in hydrodynamics, the instability here features a conjugate stable mode for every unstable mode in the absence of dissipation. Stable modes are shown to transport momentum up its gradient, shrinking the layer width whenever they exceed unstable modes in amplitude. In simulations with weak magnetic fields, the linear instability is minimally affected by the magnetic field, but enhanced small-scale fluctuations relative to the hydrodynamic case are observed. These enhanced fluctuations coincide with increased energy dissipation and faster layer broadening, with these features more pronounced in simulations with stronger fields. These trends result from the magnetic field reducing the effects of stable modes relative to the transfer of energy to small scales. As field strength increases, stable modes become less excited and thus transport less momentum against its gradient. Furthermore, the energy that would otherwise transfer back to the driving shear due to stable modes is instead allowed to cascade to small scales, where it is lost to dissipation. Approximations of the turbulent state in terms of a reduced set of modes are explored. Kinetic-ballooning-mode (KBM) turbulence is studied via gyrokinetic flux-tube simulations in three magnetic equilibria that exhibit small average magnetic shear: the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX), the helical-axis Heliotron-J and a circular tokamak geometry. For HSX, the onset of KBM being the dominant instability at low wavenumber occurs at a critical value of normalized plasma pressure $\beta ^{\rm KBM}_{\rm crit}$ that is an order of magnitude smaller than the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ballooning limit $\beta ^{\rm MHD}_{\rm crit}$ when a strong ion temperature gradient (ITG) is present. However, $\beta ^{\rm KBM}_{\rm crit}$ increases and approaches the MHD ballooning limit as the ITG tends to zero. For these configurations, $\beta ^{\rm KBM}_{\rm crit}$ also increases as the magnitude of the average magnetic shear increases, regardless of the sign of the normalized magnetic shear. Simulations of Heliotron-J and a circular axisymmetric geometry display behaviour similar to HSX with respect to $\beta ^{\rm KBM}_{\rm crit}$ . Despite large KBM growth rates at long wavelengths in HSX, saturation of KBM turbulence with $\beta > \beta _{\rm crit}^{\rm KBM}$ is achievable in HSX and results in lower heat transport relative to the electrostatic limit by a factor of roughly five. Nonlinear simulations also show that KBM transport dominates the dynamics when KBMs are destabilized linearly, even if KBM growth rates are subdominant to ITG growth rates.

The linear collisionless damping of zonal flows is calculated for quasi-symmetric stellarator equilibria in flux-tube, flux-surface, and full-volume geometry. Equilibria are studied from the quasi-helical symmetry configuration of the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX), a broken symmetry configuration of HSX, and the quasi-axial symmetry geometry of the National Compact Stellarator eXperiment (NCSX). Zonal flow oscillations and long-time damping affect the zonal flow evolution, and the zonal flow residual goes to zero for small radial wavenumber. The oscillation frequency and damping rate depend on the bounce-averaged radial particle drift in accordance with theory. While each flux tube on a flux surface is unique, several different flux tubes in HSX or NCSX can reproduce the zonal flow damping from a flux-surface calculation given an adequate parallel extent. The flux-surface or flux-tube calculations can accurately reproduce the full-volume long-time residual for moderate $k_x$, but the oscillation and damping time scales are longer in local representations, particularly for small $k_x$ approaching the system size., Comment: The following article has been accepted by Physics of Plasmas. Near-resonant energy transfer to large-scale stable modes is shown to reduce transport above the linear critical gradient, contributing to the onset of transport at higher gradients. This is demonstrated for a threshold fluid theory of ion temperature gradient turbulence based on zonal-flow-catalyzed transfer. The heat flux is suppressed above the critical gradient by resonance in the triplet correlation time, a condition enforced by the wave numbers of the interaction of the unstable mode, zonal flow, and stable mode.

We report on a detailed study of magnetic fluctuations in the JET pedestal, employing basic theoretical considerations, gyrokinetic simulations, and experimental fluctuation data to establish the physical basis for their origin, role, and distinctive characteristics. We demonstrate quantitative agreement between gyrokinetic simulations of microtearing modes (MTMs) and two magnetic frequency bands with corresponding toroidal mode numbers n = 4 and 8. Such disparate fluctuation scales, with substantial gaps between toroidal mode numbers, are commonly observed in pedestal fluctuations. Here we provide a clear explanation, namely the alignment of the relevant rational surfaces (and not others) with the peak in the ω * profile, which is localized in the steep gradient region of the pedestal. We demonstrate that a global treatment is required to capture this effect. Nonlinear simulations suggest that the MTM fluctuations produce experimentally-relevant transport levels and saturate by relaxing the background electron temperature gradient, slightly downshifting the fluctuation frequencies from the linear predictions. Scans in collisionality are compared with a simple MTM dispersion relation. At the experimental points considered, MTM growth rates can either increase or decrease with collision frequency depending on the parameters thus defying any simple characterization of collisionality dependence.

Understanding the transport of energetic cosmic rays belongs to the most challenging topics in astrophysics. Diffusion due to scattering by electromagnetic fluctuations is a key process in cosmic-ray transport. The transition from a ballistic to a diffusive-propagation regime is presented in direct numerical calculations of diffusion coefficients for homogeneous magnetic field lines subject to turbulent perturbations. Simulation results are compared with theoretical derivations of the parallel diffusion coefficient's dependencies on the energy and the fluctuation amplitudes in the limit of weak turbulence. The present study shows that the widely-used extrapolation of the energy scaling for the parallel diffusion coefficient to high turbulence levels predicted by quasi-linear theory does not provide a universally accurate description in the resonant-scattering regime. It is highlighted here that the numerically calculated diffusion coefficients can be polluted for low energies due to missing resonant interaction possibilities of the particles with the turbulence. Five reduced-rigidity regimes are established, which are separated by analytical boundaries derived in the present work. Consequently, a proper description of cosmic-ray propagation can only be achieved by using a turbulence-level-dependent diffusion coefficient and can contribute to solving the Galactic cosmic-ray gradient problem., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Microtearing turbulence in an idealized pedestal scenario is found to saturate via zonal fields, while also exciting strong zonal flows; a concurrent upshift of the non-linear critical gradient is observed. The zonal flows cause electron-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence to be ameliorated. When applying resonant magnetic perturbations, the prompt charge loss off the flux surface erodes the zonal flow, leading to higher electron-scale fluxes, while leaving microtearing saturation physics unaffected.

We theoretically assess two mechanisms thought to be responsible for the enhanced performance observed in plasma discharges of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator experiment fueled by pellet injection. The effects of the ambipolar radial electric field and the electron density peaking on the turbulent ion heat transport are separately evaluated using large-scale gyrokinetic simulations. The essential role of the stellarator magnetic geometry is demonstrated, by comparison with a tokamak.

Microtearing (MT) turbulence affects plasma confinement and profile evolution in many different magnetic-confinement scenarios, ranging from tokamak core plasmas to the H-mode pedestal and from spherical tokamaks to reversed-field pinches. Thus, an urgent need exists to design and test reduced models of MT turbulence and transport. Here, a heuristic quasilinear model is composed and verified by comparing its predictions against nonlinear MT simulations. It is found to yield good predictions of magnetic flutter transport as key parameters are varied: the collision frequency, the electron temperature gradient, and the normalized plasma pressure.

Ion-temperature-gradient-driven (ITG) turbulence is compared for two quasi-symmetric (QS) stellarator configurations to determine the relationship between linear growth rates and nonlinear heat fluxes. We focus on the quasi-helically symmetric (QHS) stellarator HSX and the quasi-axisymmetric (QAS) stellarator NCSX. In normalized units, HSX exhibits higher growth rates than NCSX, while heat fluxes in gyro-Bohm units are lower in HSX. These results hold for simulations made with both adiabatic and kinetic electrons. The results show that HSX has a larger number of subdominant modes than NCSX and that eigenmodes are more spatially extended in HSX. We conclude that the consideration of nonlinear physics is necessary to accurately assess the heat flux due to ITG turbulence when comparing QS stellarator equilibria.

Higher excitation states along the background field of plasma instabilities dominate over standard, ground-state eigenmodes once the gradient drive becomes sufficiently strong. At this point, mode parity can no longer be used as the sole identifier of microtearing activity. Not only ion- and electron-temperature-gradient-driven modes occur in higher states, but even trapped electron modes, where decorrelation mechanisms enable odd-parity mode structures without a vanishing bounce average. Nonlinearly, higher-order Hermite states imprint their structures on the turbulence. Even at considerably strong drive, however, quasilinear models can recover nonlinear fluxes, as long as all subdominantly unstable eigenmodes are included. Due to flux contributions from such modes, gradient scalings of fluxes can be stronger than linear expectations.

Plasma microinstabilities in toroidal magnetic confinement devices can be driven unstable by a radial ion temperature gradient and stabilized by rotational flow shear. In this study, we argue that these nonlinear dynamics can be captured by the linear stabilization of Floquet modes. To that end, we propose a novel method (the τAC method) to calculate growth rates by averaging over linear Floquet modes. The τAC method is compared to nonlinear and other linear approaches and is shown to work well at low parallel velocity gradient drive. As such, the method provides a promising approach to explore the parameter dependencies of flow shear stabilization.

Energy transfer in ion-temperature-gradient-driven (ITG) turbulence and its role in modeling transport are examined for finite normalized plasma pressure β for a number of test cases and experimental discharges. The analysis shows that like the zero-β case, finite-β ITG turbulence saturates by nonlinear energy transfer to stable modes mediated by a zonal flow. Electromagnetic effects reliably increase stable mode amplitudes but affect heat fluxes only at the ≈5% level. The most important change with increased β is an increase in the correlation time of the triplet interaction of the unstable mode, stable mode, and zonal flow, thus providing a heightened nonlinear energy transfer efficiency, which allows the instability to saturate at lower amplitude. The heat flux is examined in connection with nonlinear electromagnetic stabilization, the phenomenon where the flux falloff with β is more pronounced than the falloff predicted by quasilinear transport models. [EN] Gyrokinetic simulations of drift waves in low-magnetic-shear stellarators reveal that simulation domains comprised of multiple turns can be required to properly resolve critical mode structures important in saturation dynamics. Marginally stable eigenmodes important in saturation of ion temperature gradient modes and trapped electron modes in the Helically Symmetric Experiment (HSX) stellarator are observed to have two scales, with the envelope scale determined by the properties of the local magnetic shear and an inner scale determined by the interplay between the local shear and magnetic field-line curvature. Properly resolving these modes removes spurious growth rates that arise for extended modes in zero-magnetic-shear approximations, enabling use of a zero-magnetic-shear technique with smaller simulation domains and attendant cost savings. Analysis of subdominant modes in trapped electron mode (TEM)-driven turbulence reveals that the extended marginally stable modes play an important role in the nonlinear dynamics, and suggests that the properties induced by low magnetic shear may be exploited to provide another route for turbulence saturation., The authors would like to thank F. The physical causes for the strong stabilizing effect of finite plasma β on ion-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence, which far exceeds quasilinear estimates, are identified from nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations. The primary contribution stems from a resonance of frequencies in the dominant nonlinear interaction between the unstable mode, the stable mode, and zonal flows, which maximizes the triplet correlation time and therefore the energy transfer efficiency. A modification to mixing-length transport estimates is constructed, which reproduces nonlinear heat fluxes throughout the examined β range.

This document is the product of a stellarator community workshop, organized by the National Stellarator Coordinating Committee and referred to as Stellcon, that was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in February 2016, hosted by MIT. The workshop was widely advertised, and was attended by 40 scientists from 12 different institutions including national labs, universities and private industry, as well as a representative from the Department of Energy. The final section of this document describes areas of community wide consensus that were developed as a result of the discussions held at that workshop. Areas where further study would be helpful to generate a consensus path forward for the US stellarator program are also discussed. The program outlined in this document is directly responsive to many of the strategic priorities of FES as articulated in “Fusion Energy Sciences: A Ten-Year Perspective (2015–2025)” [1]. The natural disruption immunity of the stellarator directly addresses “Elimination of transient events that can be deleterious to toroidal fusion plasma confinement devices” an area of critical importance for the US fusion energy sciences enterprise over the next decade. Another critical area of research “Strengthening our partnerships with international research facilities,” is being significantly advanced on the W7-X stellarator in Germany and serves as a test-bed for development of successful international collaboration on ITER. This report also outlines how materials science as it relates to plasma and fusion sciences, another critical research area, can be carried out effectively in a stellarator. Additionally, significant advances along two of the Research Directions outlined in the report; “Burning Plasma Science: Foundations—Next-generation research capabilities”, and “Burning Plasma Science: Long pulse—Sustainment of Long-Pulse Plasma Equilibria” are proposed.

A linearly unstable, sinusoidal $E \times B$ shear flow is examined in the gyrokinetic framework in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. In the linear regime, it is shown that the eigenmode spectrum is nearly identical to hydrodynamic shear flows, with a conjugate stable mode found at every unstable wavenumber. In the nonlinear regime, turbulent saturation of the instability is examined with and without the inclusion of a driving term that prevents nonlinear flattening of the mean flow, and a scale-independent radiative damping term that suppresses the excitation of conjugate stable modes. A simple fluid model for how momentum transport and partial flattening of the mean flow scale with the driving term is constructed, from which it is shown that, except at high radiative damping, stable modes play an important role in the turbulent state and yield significantly improved quantitative predictions when compared with corresponding models neglecting stable modes., Comment: 34 pages pre-print format, 13 figures, submitted to Physics of Plasmas

Non-physical effects of discretization schemes on simulations of plasma microturbulence are investigated, and different types of hyperdiffusion terms in the gyrokinetic Vlasov equation are employed to cancel or mitigate these effects. Widely applicable rules on how to operate parallel spatial and velocity space diffusion – to avoid numerically excited high- k ∥ modes and recurrence phenomena, respectively – are presented. The impact of diffusion terms on and the applicability of these findings to results obtained in the context of a benchmark scenario are demonstrated.

Owing to complex geometry, gyrokinetic simulations in stellarator geometry produce large numbers of subdominant unstable and stable, near-orthogonal eigenmodes. Here, results based on the full eigenmode spectrum in stellarator geometry are presented for the first time. In the nonlinear state of a low-magnetic-shear ion-temperature-gradient-driven case, a multitude of these modes are active and imprint the system. Turbulent frequency spectra are broadband as a consequence, in addition to a nonlinear, narrow signature at electron frequencies. It is shown that successful quasilinear, mixing-length transport modeling is possible in stellarators, where it is essential to account for all subdominant unstable modes.

A notable feature of plasma turbulence is its propensity to retain features of the underlying linear eigenmodes in a strongly turbulent state—a property that can be exploited to predict various aspects of the turbulence using only linear information. In this context, this work examines gradient-driven gyrokinetic plasma turbulence through three lenses—linear eigenvalue spectra, pseudospectra, and singular value decomposition (SVD). We study a reduced gyrokinetic model whose linear eigenvalue spectra include ion temperature gradient driven modes, stable drift waves, and kinetic modes representing Landau damping. The goal is to characterize in which ways, if any, these familiar ingredients are manifest in the nonlinear turbulent state. This pursuit is aided by the use of pseudospectra, which provide a more nuanced view of the linear operator by characterizing its response to perturbations. We introduce a new technique whereby the nonlinearly evolved phase space structures extracted with SVD are linked to the linear operator using concepts motivated by pseudospectra. Using this technique, we identify nonlinear structures that have connections to not only the most unstable eigenmode but also subdominant modes that are nonlinearly excited. The general picture that emerges is a system in which signatures of the linear physics persist in the turbulence, albeit in ways that cannot be fully explained by the linear eigenvalue approach; a non-modal treatment is necessary to understand key features of the turbulence.

The emerging understanding of instability-driven plasma-turbulence saturation in terms of energy transfer to stable modes in the same scale range as the instability is employed to derive a saturation theory for the toroidal branch of ion temperature gradient turbulence that provides the scaling of turbulence and zonal flow levels for all physical parameters. The theory is based on the eigenmode decomposition of a nonlinear fluid model, which is subjected to a statistical closure and simplified via an ordering expansion consistent with zonal-flow catalyzed energy transfer from the unstable mode to the stable mode at large scale. Solution of the closed energy balance equations yields a turbulence level that is proportional to the ratio of the zonal flow damping rate and the inverse of the triplet correlation time of the zonal-flow catalyzed wavenumber triplet interaction. Gyrokinetic simulations of plasma microturbulence in the Helically Symmetric eXperiment are presented. Using plasma profiles relevant to experimental operation, four dominant drift wave regimes are observed in the ion wavenumber range, which are identified as different flavors of density-gradient-driven trapped electron modes. For the most part, the heat transport exhibits properties associated with turbulence driven by these types of modes. Additionally, long-wavelength, radially localized, nonlinearly excited coherent structures near the resonant central flux surface, not predicted by linear simulations, can further enhance flux levels. Integrated heat fluxes are compatible with experimental observations in the corresponding density gradient range. Despite low shearing rates, zonal flows are observed to regulate turbulence but can be overwhelmed at higher density gradients by the long-wavelength coherent structures.

The robustness and the effect of zonal flows in trapped electron mode (TEM) turbulence and Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) turbulence in the reversed-field pinch (RFP) are investigated from numerical solutions of the gyrokinetic equations with and without magnetic external perturbations introduced to model tearing modes. For simulations without external magnetic field perturbations, zonal flows produce a much larger reduction of transport for the density-gradient-driven TEM turbulence than they do for the ITG turbulence. Zonal flows are studied in detail to understand the nature of their strong excitation in the RFP and to gain insight into the key differences between the TEM- and ITG-driven regimes. The zonal flow residuals are significantly larger in the RFP than in tokamak geometry due to the low safety factor. Analysis of the saturation of the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability is undertaken to determine the extent to which the conjugate linearly stable mode plays a role. For a piecewise-continuous mean flow profile with constant shear in a fixed layer, it is shown that the stable mode is nonlinearly excited, providing an injection-scale sink of the fluctuation energy similar to what has been found for gyroradius-scale drift-wave turbulence. Quantitative evaluation of the contribution of the stable mode to the energy balance at the onset of saturation shows that nonlinear energy transfer to the stable mode is as significant as energy transfer to small scales in balancing energy injected into the spectrum by the instability. The effect of the stable mode on momentum transport is quantified by expressing the Reynolds stress in terms of stable and unstable mode amplitudes at saturation, from which it is found that the stable mode can produce a sizable reduction in the momentum flux., 23 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Physics of Plasmas, June 2017

The core micro-instability characteristics of hybrid and baseline plasmas in a selected set of JET plasmas with carbon wall are investigated through local linear and non-linear and global linear gyro-kinetic simulations with the GYRO code [J. Candy and E. Belli, General Atomics Report GA-A26818 (2011)]. In particular, we study the role of plasma pressure on the micro-instabilities, and scan the parameter space for the important plasma parameters responsible for the onset and stabilization of the modes under experimental conditions. We find that a good core confinement due to strong stabilization of the micro-turbulence driven transport can be expected in the hybrid plasmas due to the stabilizing effect of the fast ion pressure that is more effective at the low magnetic shear of the hybrid discharges. While parallel velocity gradient destabilization is important for the inner core, at outer radii the hybrid plasmas may benefit from a strong quench of the turbulence transport by $\mathbf{E}\times\mathbf{B}$ rotation shear., accepted for publication in Nuclear Fusion

A current sheet susceptible to the tearing instability is used to drive reconnection turbulence in the presence of a strong guide field. Through nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations, the dependencies of central quantities such as the heating rate on parameters like collisionality or plasma β are studied, revealing that linear physics tends to predict only some aspects of the quasi-saturated state, with the nonlinear cascade responsible for additional features. For the solar corona, it is demonstrated that the kinetic heating associated with this type of turbulence agrees quantitatively with observational volumetric heating rates. In the context of short particle acceleration events, the self-consistent emergence of plasmoids or flux ropes in the turbulent bath is found to be important: ubiquitously occurring merger events of these objects cause strong bursts in the heating rate, the timescale of which is consistent with nanoflare observations. Furthermore, anisotropy of the temperature fluctuations is seen to emerge, hinting at a new means of generating coronal ion temperature anisotropy in the absence of cyclotron resonances.

Fusion energy development is quite successful in both getting equivalent energy breakevencondition in large tokamak and clarifying many important physics in the magnetically confinedplasma to proceed to a fusion experimental reactor, ITER. Now, fusion research has to solvethe power handling toward fusion demonstration power reactor (DEMO). A tokamak plasma withstrongly negative triangularity may o er such an opportunity as an innovative concept. Experimentaland theoretical works at CRPP-EPFL shows promising results for negative triangularity tokamak. In this paper, we review the current understanding of such configuration in both physicaland technological aspects.

This overview of results from the MST reversed field pinch program summarizes physics im- portant for the advancement of the RFP as well as for improved understanding of toroidal magnetic confinement in general. Topics include energetic particle effects, 3D helical equilibria, and density limit studies, microturbulence, ion heating, and magnetic self-organization physics. With neutral beam injection, several bursty energetic particle (EP) modes are observed. The profiles of the magnetic and density fluctuations associated with these EP-modes are measured using an FIR interferometer- polarimeter. Equilibrium reconstructions of the quasi-single-helicity 3D helical state are provided by the V3FIT code that now incorporates several of MST's advanced diagnostics. A predator-prey theoretical model based on sheared flow and/or magnetic field has been developed that captures key QSH dynamics. Upgraded pellet injection permits study of density and limits over MST's full range of operation, and an MST-record line-average density of 0 : 9 10 20 { m 3 ( n { n G 1 : 4 ) has been obtained. Plasma exhibits saturation at tot § 20% for a wide range of density, 0 : 2 + n { n G + 1 : 6 . Gyrokinetic simulations (GENE) based on experimental toroidal equilibrium reconstructions predict unstable trapped electron modes. Nonlinear simulations show that the "Dimits shift" is large and persists at finite . Experimentally, small-scale density fluctuations are detected in improved confine- ment plasmas. Impurity ion temperature measurements reveal a charge-to-mass-ratio dependence in the rapid heating that occurs during a sawtooth crash. Also, a toroidal asymmetry in the ion temper- ature is measured, correlated with 3D magnetic structure associated with tearing modes. Magnetic self-organization studies include measurements and modeling of the dynamo emf in standard RFP operation as well as with an applied ac inductive electric field to investigate the dynamics of oscillating field current drive (OFCD). Extended MHD computation for standard RFP conditions using NIMROD predicts dynamical coupling of current and plasma flow relaxation. The dynamo emf has also been measured when OFCD is applied, strengthening the understanding of and possibility for steady-state current sustainment using inductive current drive.

Energy transfer to damped modes in gyrokinetic ion temperature gradient driven turbulence is studied to understand the transfer dynamics and find scaling representations for the heavily populated mode space. Proper orthogonal and linear eigenmode decompositions are introduced and examined to assess whether modes are well-resolved and what scales they encompass. It is observed that damped modes across a range of inhomogeneous scales receive energy simultaneously and directly from the unstable mode, constituting a form of parallel transfer, distinct from the serial mode-to-mode transfer of the wavenumber cascade of hydrodynamic turbulence. Controlling for modes that are well resolved and labeling the modes of the linear decomposition in order of damping rate, energy transfer in the mode space satisfies an equipartition of the energy dissipation rate, leading to a simple rule for the distribution of energy in the space of damped modes. Energy dissipation rate equipartition is the form that the canonical nonlinear invariance of energy transfer assumes in a dissipation range with parallel rather than serial transfer.

Extensive linear and non-linear gyrokinetic simulations, including kinetic electrons, collisions, flow shear, realistic geometry, electromagnetic effects, impurities, as well as perpendicular and parallel magnetic fluctuations, and linear MHD analyses performed respectively with the GENE and MISHKA codes, have shown for the first time that the large population of fast ions found in the plasma core under particular heating conditions has a strong impact on core microturbulence and edge MHD. In particular, nonlinear electromagnetic stabilization of Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) turbulence can be very much enhanced by fast ion pressure gradients. These results can explain the improved ion energy confinement regime observed in L-mode ion heat transport studies at the JET tokamak which manifests itself as a reduction of the ion temperature stiffness and which, until now had not been reproduced by nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations. The same effect has been shown to be important in high- hybrid scenarios from JET and JT-60U with a large population of fast ions. Up to 4 times of lower ion heat flux for the same R/LTi is obtained in these plasmas when the fast ions contribution is taken into account. This can explain the higher core ion temperature gradients obtained in these regimes as the flow shear is found to play a much weaker role. In addition to the core transport stabilization, the fast ions have been seen to favorably impact edge transport. The high core total pressure achieved due to fast ions modifies the Shafranov-shift leading to a pedestal pressure which can increase by 10% when the extra core pressure is taken into account. Therefore, a virtuous circle starts in these plasmas when the fast ions increase the total core pressure without increasing the turbulence drive, even reducing the ITG microturbulence. This leads to an improved edge pedestal pressure by means of the increased Shafranov-shift in a manner unachievable by simple thermal pressure, which is strongly limited by microturbulence. Recent experimental observations at JET show evidence of reduced ion temperature profile stiffness, hypothesised to be due to concomitant low magnetic shear (s) and significant toroidal rotational flow shear. Non-linear gyrokinetic simulations are performed, aiming to investigate the physical mechanism behind the observations. A comprehensive set of simulations are carried out, comparing the impact on the ion heat flux of various parameters that differ within the data-set. These parameters include q, s, rotation, effect of rotation on the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium, R/L_n, beta_e, Z_eff, and the fast particle content. The effect of toroidal flow shear itself is not predicted by the simulations to lead to a significant reduction in ion heat flux, due both to an insufficient magnitude of flow shear and significant parallel velocity gradient destabilisation. It is however found that non-linear electromagnetic effects due to both thermal and fast-particle pressure gradients, even at low beta_e, can significantly reduce the profile stiffness. A total of five discharges are examined, at both inner and outer radii. For all cases studied, the simulated and experimental ion heat flux values agree within reasonable variations of input parameters around the experimental uncertainties., Comment: 33 pages, 25 figures, 4 tables. Jenko, fsj@ipp.mpg.de The common view in fusion theory is that nonlinear gyrokinetics constitutes a reliable firstprinciples approach to describe turbulent transport in MCF devices. Surprisingly, however, two recent findings challenged this notion. First, the experimental ion heat fluxes in the outer core of certain DIII-D L-mode discharges were underpredicted by GK simulations by almost an order of magnitude. This finding has been dubbed the "shortfall problem" and has triggered extensive theoretical efforts on an international level. Second, a careful analysis of some L-mode discharges in the JET tokamak revealed a significant reduction of ion temperature profile stiffness in the presence of strong NBI r1s. This was first attributed to a combination of high toroidal flow shear and low magnetic shear. However, nonlinear GK simulations failed to confirm this suspicion, overpredicting the observed fluxes by up to an order of magnitude. This finding could be called the "excess problem" and is as severe as the shortfall problem described above. The main goal of the present contribution is to revisit both of these problems and substantiate or refute them. At stake is the plasma theory community's confidence to devise a predictive transport capability for devices like ITER or DEMO on the basis of nonlinear GK. Via careful studies with the GENE code (using about 30 million CPUh), both of these challenges could be met successfully. While the transport levels in outer-core L-mode discharges of DIII-D, C-Mod, and ASDEX Upgrade r2s can be reproduced within the experimental error bars, the observed ion temperature stiffness reduction in JET can be explained in terms of nonlinear electromagnetic effects in the presence of fast ions r3s. Thus, a number of ideas about possible elements missing in the present theoretical description or even a possible breakdown of GK are identified as premature. Meanwhile, these studies highlight the fact that the search for adequate minimal models of turbulent plasma transport under various experimental circumstances is highly non-trivial. From numerical solutions of a gyrokinetic model for ion temperature gradient turbulence it is shown that nonlinear coupling is dominated by three-wave interactions that include spectral components of the zonal flow and damped subdominant modes. Zonal flows dissipate very little energy injected by the instability, but facilitate its transfer from the unstable mode to dissipative subdominant modes, in part due to the small frequency sum of such triplets. Although energy is transferred to higher wave numbers, consistent with shearing, a large fraction is transferred to damped subdominant modes within the instability range. This is a new aspect of regulation of turbulence by zonal flows.

Nonlinear electromagnetic stabilization by suprathermal pressure gradients found in specific regimes is shown to be a key factor in reducing tokamak microturbulence, augmenting significantly the thermal pressure electromagnetic stabilization. Based on nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations investigating a set of ion heat transport experiments on the JET tokamak, described by Mantica et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 135004 (2011)], this result explains the experimentally observed ion heat flux and stiffness reduction. These findings are expected to improve the extrapolation of advanced tokamak scenarios to reactor relevant regimes., 5 pages, 5 figures

Providing an important step towards validating gyrokinetics under comparatively little-explored conditions, simulations of pressure-gradient-driven plasma turbulence in the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) are compared with experimental observations. The corresponding signatures confirm the existence of a novel regime of turbulence, based on the recently-discovered gradient-driven drift coupling (GDC) instability, which is thus confirmed as a candidate mechanism for turbulence in basic, space and astrophysical plasmas. Despite the limitations of flux-tube gyrokinetics for this scenario, when accounting for box size scaling by applying a scalar factor , agreement between simulations and experiment improves to within a factor of two for key observables: compressional magnetic, density, and temperature fluctuations, both in amplitude and structure. Thus, a first, strong indication is presented that the GDC instability seen in gyrokinetics appears to operate in the experiment and that the essential instability physics is present in the numerical model. Overall, the gyrokinetic framework and its numerical implementation in the Gene code therefore perform well for LAPD plasmas very different from their brethren in fusion experiments.

In light of planned ITER operation, it is important to improve understanding of fast particle behavior. This work focuses on the influence of both electrostatic and electromagnetic background microturbulent fields by studying passive fast ions in gyrokinetic turbulence simulations. Since magnetic fluctuations are the primary source of fast particle diffusion at high energies, the threshold values are investigated where this regime starts to dominate over the effects of electrostatic turbulence. Comparisons with analytical theory are presented.

Nonlinear excitation of linearly stable microtearing modes--with zonal modes acting as a catalyst--is shown to be responsible for the near-ubiquitous magnetic stochasticity and associated electromagnetic electron heat transport in electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of plasma microturbulence.
