Abstract

This article presents the early results of synchronous multiwavelength observations of one of the brightest gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) GRB 160625B with the detailed continuous fast optical photometry of its optical counterpart obtained by MASTER and with hard X-ray and gamma-ray emission, obtained by the Lomonosov and Konus-Wind spacecraft. The detailed photometry led us to detect the quasi-periodical emission components in the intrinsic optical emission. As a result of our analysis of synchronous multiwavelength observations, we propose a three-stage collapse scenario for this long and bright GRB. We suggest that quasiperiodic fluctuations may be associated with forced precession of a self-gravitating rapidly rotating superdense body (spinar), whose evolution is determined by a powerful magnetic field. The spinar’s mass allows it to collapse into a black hole at the end of evolution.

Abstract

The paper presents a project of a satellite experiment on the observation of intense flashes (transients) of electromagnetic emission from the Earth's atmosphere in different spectral ranges, as well as the measurement of medium- and long-term dynamics of spatial distribution of fluxes of energetic charged particles in the near-Earth space. To implement the experiment, it is planned to develop a Russian-Azerbaijani small spacecraft capable of carrying a payload of up to 25-30 kg. The satellite is also expected to realize a number of technology experiments, in particular, to study the effect of space flight factors on the matrices of silicon photomultipliers. We also consider the possibility of installing a telescope for photometric observations of binary stars. The requirements to the orbit and spacecraft attitude modes, as well as to its on-board systems, are considered in accordance with the goals and objectives of the experiment. The measurement data which are planned to be obtained during this experiment will subsequently be used for various scientific and applied problems including validation of existing and development of new dynamic models of radiation in the near-Earth space, ensuring the safety of the functioning of spacecraft.

Abstract

The natural and “man-made” space environment generates serious risks for the implementation of space missions, both automatic and human. The main natural and technogenic risk factors that limit or pose a threat to the implementation of space-based automatic and manned space missions in the near-Earth space are cosmic radiation and space debris. In the upper layers of the atmosphere, natural transient electromagnetic phenomena associated with significant energy release are also risk factors for suborbital flights. It is planned to create a system of spacecraft in the proposed “Universat-SOCRAT” project that makes it possible, in a mode close to real-time, to determine the radiation conditions in a significant part of the area of trapped radiation, up to the orbits of global navigation satellite systems or the geostationary orbit. It is also planned to create a space segment of monitoring space debris and electromagnetic transients in the upper atmosphere. Monitoring of space debris will allow all-weather and global tracking of near-Earth objects and, thereby, increase the efficiency of analyzing data and making necessary decisions. In some cases it will improve the accuracy of determining the coordinates of objects for their subsequent cataloging. Successful realization of the project will make it possible to create a space system for monitoring and preventing space hazards for both ongoing and planned space missions for the first time in the world.

Abstract

This paper presents a catalogue of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by the instruments onboard the Lomonosov space observatory. The Lomonosov mission gave the first experience of not only multi-wavelength (from optical to gamma) observations of GRBs but also multi-messenger observations of extreme phenomena and GRBs. The detailed light curves and energy spectra of the detected GRBs are presented. The results of the prompt, early an afterglow optical observations of several GRBs are discussed.

Abstract

A special version of the SHIELD transport code has been developed intended for radiation protection purposes in space. The calculation of the fluxes of primary and secondary particles and the absorbed dose rate in a water phantom behind various shielding under the influence of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) using the GCR model developed by the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Moscow State University. The code architecture is briefly described as a version of SHIELD including models of nuclear reactions. Stopping power dE/dX(E) is calculated in the energy range of 10 keV/nucleon–100 GeV/nucleon. The calculation was performed in spherical geometry, which allows, in a simple formulation of the problem, to compare the fluxes of particles of different types in the phantom, as well as to estimate the contribution to the dose of different GCR components depending on the protection parameters.

Abstract

The Moscow University Universat-SOCRAT program is aimed at using small satellites to monitor space threats, such as radiation in near-earth space, electromagnetic transients, and potentially dangerous bodies of natural and artificial origins. The first stage of the program implementation began on July 5, 2019 as a result of the successful launch of three Cubesat-type nanosatellites from the Vostochny cosmodrome. These satellites are equipped with instruments for space radiation monitoring, as well as prototypes of devices for observing transient phenomena in the Earth’s atmosphere. In particular, two satellites are equipped with scintillation phosphich detectors that detect charged particles and gamma quanta in the energy release range of 0.1–2 MeV. The geometric factor of these instruments is $${\approx}50$$ cm $${}^{2}$$ sr. One of the Cubesats also carries an optical photometer, consisting of four silicon photomultipliers, which entrance windows are covered with different light filters. The satellites were launched into solar-synchronous orbits with an altitude of $${\approx}550$$ km. This makes favorable conditions for space radiation monitoring in various areas of near-Earth space, including zones of trapped radiation, areas of precipitation, etc. Such an orbit also allows observations of flare phenomena both in the equatorial atmosphere and at high latitudes. The first results of flight tests are discussed.

Abstract

The K-EUSO project developed in the JEM-EUSO collaboration for installation on board the International Space Station is described. A number of technological projects are successfully executed during its preparation: the EUSO-Balloon and EUSO-SPB1 balloon experiments, and the telescope as part of the Telescope Array (EUSO-TA). Since 2019, a wide-angle detector “UV atmosphere” (Mini-EUSO) has been operating on board the ISS Russian Segment. After K-EUSO, it is planned to conduct the even more ambitious POEMMA (Probe of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics) experiment to register both ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and high-energy neutrinos.

Abstract

Measurement of polarized light provides a direct probe of magnetic fields in collimated outflows (jets) of relativistic plasma from accreting stellar-mass black holes at cosmological distances. These outflows power brief and intense flashes of prompt gamma-rays known as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), followed by longer-lived afterglow radiation detected across the electromagnetic spectrum. Rapid-response polarimetric observations of newly discovered GRBs have probed the initial afterglow phase. Linear polarization degrees as high as Π∼30% are detected minutes after the end of the prompt GRB emission, consistent with a stable, globally ordered magnetic field permeating the jet at large distances from the central source. In contrast, optical and gamma-ray observations during the prompt phase led to discordant and often controversial results, and no definitive conclusions on the origin of the prompt radiation or the configuration of the magnetic field could be derived. Here we report the detection of linear polarization of a prompt optical flash that accompanied the extremely energetic and long-lived prompt gamma-ray emission from GRB 160625B. Our measurements probe the structure of the magnetic field at an early stage of the GRB jet, closer to the central source, and show that the prompt GRB phase is produced via fast cooling synchrotron radiation in a large-scale magnetic field advected from the central black hole and distorted from dissipation processes within the jet.

Abstract

The generation of transient and other optical phenomena in the Earth’s upper atmosphere under the action of electron fluxes and high- and low-frequency electromagnetic waves resulting from electromagnetic fields [1] has been studied onboard the small Vernov spacecraft (solar synchronous orbit, 98° inclination, altitude 640–830 km). On the night side at middle latitudes, the technogenic glow is shown to be observed along the preferential meridians whose distribution corresponds to the longitudes of the most powerful low-frequency radio stations [2]. The geographic distribution of this glow changes abruptly at the boundary between the day and night sides of the satellite orbit; on the day side, such meridians are not identified, while their geographic distribution in longitude is uniform. The boundaries of the geographic distribution of technogenic glow regions on the day side are unstable in latitude, their northern and southern boundaries are shifted at all latitudes from the North Pole to the South Pole. At middle and low latitudes, zones with random geographic coordinates, where the technogenic glow is completely absent, are observed in the distributions of signals along the meridians. When studying the flashes caused by discharges in the atmosphere, we showed that lightning flashes and transient luminous events at nighttime are observed mainly in equatorial regions, which coincide with zones of high thunderstorm activity. At daytime, flashes of light are recorded much more rarely, have a short duration, are observed most often in the Earth’s polar regions, including the winter periods, the power of their emission exceeds considerably the power of similar (in duration) short flashes observed at night.

Abstract

The design for the TAIGA-HiSCORE array, a part of the TAIGA Gamma Ray Observatory, is considered. The observatory is being constructed in the Tunka Valley, 50 km from Lake Baikal. Preliminary results obtained using the first 28 optical stations of the array are presented.

Abstract

The Earth’s radiation belts discovered at the end of the 1950s have great scientific and practical interest. Their main characteristics in magnetically quiet periods are well known. However, the dynamics of the Earth’s radiation belts during magnetic storms and substorms, particularly the dynamics of relativistic electrons of the outer belt, when Earth’s radiation belt particle fluxes undergo significant time variations, is studied insufficiently. At present, principally new experiments have been performed and planned with the intention to better study the dynamics of the Earth’s radiation belts and to operationally control the space-energy distributions of the Earth’s radiation belt particle fluxes. In this paper, for spacecraft designed to measure the fluxes of electrons and protons of the Earth’s radiation belts at altitudes of 0.5–10000 km, the optimal versions for detector orientation and orbital parameters have been considered and selected.

Abstract

The galactic cosmic ray (GCR) particle flux model has been developed by using the experimental data obtained during the solar cycles 21–24. The model calculates fluxes of GCR particles (with charge z from 1 to 28 and energy E from 80 up to 105 MeV/nucleon) in the interplanetary space (ecliptic plane) as a function of solar activity (sunspot number) and the heliocentric distance. GCR proton fluxes computed by the model for the case of a possible decrease in solar activity during solar cycles 25 and 26 are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The Interhelioprobe mission aims to investigate the inner heliosphere and the Sun from close distances (up to 0.3 AU) and from out of the ecliptic plane (up to 30°). In this paper we present the relevance of the mission and its main scientific objectives, describe the scientific payload, ballistic scenario and orbits of the spacecraft. Possibilities of scientific cooperation with other solar and heliospheric space missions are also mentioned.

The results are analyzed and compared with the calculation data for other actively exploited near-Earth orbits.

Abstract

The structure and dynamics of electron fluxes of subrelativistic energies in the range 235–300 keV at L < 4 during December 3–8, 2014, are analyzed according to the RELEC instrument onboard the Vernov satellite. Sharp changes in the parameters of the solar wind and the IMF were detected on December 6, but they did not lead to a magnetic storm. However, after the event of December 6, subrelativistic electron fluxes in the inner belt and the slot region were enhanced and structured. The dynamics of electron fluxes in the local transient bursts at L ~ 1.5–1.7 is considered in detail. It is shown that these bursts are associated with the development of the cyclotron instability in the tops of magnetic flux tubes near the inner belt maximum. The electron anisotropic index is estimated in these bursts. It is shown that in the beginning these bursts are anisotropic and that they become isotropic as the decay proceeds. The most likely chain of physical mechanisms that could lead to variations in electron fluxes of the inner belt described in this paper is presented. For the first time, the topological effects in stationary distributions of the electrons of the inner belt observed at low altitudes in the South Atlantic Anomaly region are explained.

Abstract

International audience; The TurLab facility is a laboratory, equipped with a 5 m diameter and 1 m depth rotating tank, located in the Physics Department of the University of Turin. Originally, it was mainly built to study systems of different scales where rotation plays a key role in the fluid behaviour such as in atmospheric and oceanic flows. In the past few years the TurLab facility has been used to perform experiments related to the observation of Extreme Energy Cosmic Rays (EECRs) from space using the fluorescence technique. For example, in the case of the JEM-EUSO mission, where the diffuse night brightness and artificial light sources can vary significantly in time and space inside the Field of View of the telescope. The Focal Surface of Mini-EUSO Engineering Model (Mini-EUSO EM) with the level 1 (L1) and 2 (L2) trigger logics implemented in the Photo-Detector Module (PDM) has been tested at TurLab. Tests related to the possibility of using an EUSO-like detector for other type of applications such as Space Debris (SD) monitoring and imaging detector have also been pursued. The tests and results obtained within the EUSO@TurLab Project on these different topics are presented.

Abstract

Mini-EUSO is a UV telescope that will look downwards to the Earth's atmosphere onboard the International Space Station. With the design of the ultra-high energy cosmic ray fluorescence detectors belonging to the JEM-EUSO program, it will make the first UV map of the Earth by observing atmospheric phenomena such as transient luminous events, sprites and lightning, as well as meteors and bioluminescence from earth. Diffused light from laser shots from the ground, which mimic the fluorescence light emitted by Nitrogen molecules when extensive air showers pass through the atmosphere, can be used to verify the capability of this kind of detector to observe ultra-high energy cosmic rays. To validate the electronics and the trigger algorithms developed for Mini-EUSO, a scaled down version of the telescope with 1:9 of the original focal surface and a lens of 2.5 cm diameter has been built. Tests of the Mini-EUSO engineering model have been made in laboratory and in open sky condition. In this paper, we report results of observations of the night sky, which include the detection of stars, meteors, a planet and a rocket body reflecting the sunlight. Abstract

One of the least documented and understood aspects of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is the rise phase of the optical light curve. The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) is an effort to address this question through extraordinary opportunities presented by a series of space missions including a small spacecraft observatory. The UFFO is equipped with a fast-response Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) that uses a rapidly moving mirror or mirror array to redirect the optical beam rather than slewing the entire spacecraft to aim the optical instrument at the GRB position. The UFFO will probe the early optical rise of GRBs with sub-second response, for the first time, opening a completely new frontier in GRBs and transient studies. Its fast response measurements of the optical emission of dozens of GRBs each year will provide unique probes of the burst mechanism and test the prospect of GRBs as a new standard candle, potentially opening up the z > 10 universe. For the first time we employ a motorized slewing stage in SMT that can point to the event within 1 s after the x-ray trigger provided by the UFFO Burst Alert and Trigger Telescope. These two scientific instruments comprise the UFFO-pathfinder payload, which will be placed onboard the Lomonosov satellite and launched in 2013. The UFFO-pathfinder is the first step of our long-term program of space instruments for rapid-response GRB observations. We describe early photon science, our soon-to-be-launched UFFO-pathfinder hardware and mission, and our next planned mission, the UFFO-100.

Abstract

The generation of transients in the Earth’s upper atmosphere under the action of electron fluxes and high- and low-frequency electromagnetic waves has been studied onboard the small Vernov spacecraft (solar synchronous orbit, 98° inclination, height 640–830 km). The studies were carried out with ultraviolet (UV, 240–380 nm), red–infrared (IR, 610–800 nm), gamma-ray (0.01–3 MeV), and electron (0.2–15 MeV) detectors as well as with high-frequency (0.05–15 MHz) and low-frequency (0.1 Hz–40 kHz) radio receivers. Artificial optical signals distributed along the meridian in an extended region of latitudes in the Earth’s Northern and Southern Hemispheres modulated by a low frequency were recorded during the nadir observations at nighttime. Examples of the oscillograms of such signals in the UV and IR spectral ranges and their global distribution are presented. The emission generation altitude and the atmospheric components that can be the sources of this emission are discussed. Particular attention is given to the technogenic causes of this glow in the ionosphere under the action of powerful low- and high-frequency radio stations on the ionosphere.

Abstract

Solar hard X-ray and $\gamma$ -ray emissions were measured by the Detector of the Roentgen and Gamma-ray Emissions (DRGE) instrument, which is part of the RELEC set of instruments operated onboard the Russian satellite Vernov, from July 8, 2014 until December 10, 2014 (on a solar-synchronous orbit with an apogee of 830 km, perigee of 640 km, and an inclination of $98.4^{\circ}$ ). RELEC measurements of 18 flares with X-ray energy ${>}\,30~\mbox{keV}$ , taken in September – October 2014, were connected with the same active region with the number AR 12172 during the first rotation and AR 12192 during the next one. These measurements were compared to the data obtained with RHESSI, Konus-Wind, Fermi Observatory, Radio Solar Telescope Net (RSTN), and the Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH) operating at the same time. Quasi-periodicities with similar periods of $7\pm2~\mbox{s}$ were found in about one third of all flares measured by RELEC (Vernov) from September 24 until October 30, 2014.

The results of measurements of fluxes and spectra carried out using the RELEC (relativistic electrons) equipment onboard the VERNOV satellite in the second half of 2014 are presented. The VERNOV satellite was launched on July 8, 2014 in a sun-synchronous orbit with an altitude from 640 to 830 km and an inclination of 98.4°. Scientific information from the satellite was first received on July 20, 2014. The comparative analysis of electron fluxes using data from RELEC and using experimental data on the electron detection by satellites Elektro-L (positioned at a geostationary orbit) and Meteor-M no. 2 (positioned at a circular polar orbit at an altitude of about 800 km as the VERNOV satellite) will make it possible to study the spatial distribution pattern of energetic electrons in near-Earth space in more detail.

The operational monitoring of radiation conditions in different orbits in near-Earth space is crucial for ensuring the radiation safety of space flights. The intensity of ionizing radiation fluxes in near-Earth space varies within several orders of magnitude. Therefore, existing averaged empirical models cannot always be used to estimate specific radiation conditions in orbits. The forecast of solar cosmic rays is even less reliable. This paper presents a version of the global system of radiation monitoring in near-Earth space based on the system of multiple small satellites. The considered system of satellites with identical radiometric equipment will provide operational information on the fluxes of electrons and protons of Earth radiation belts and solar cosmic rays, which will make it possible to create 3D pictures of the distribution of particle fluxes in real time.

Abstract

The successful circumpolar flight of the X-ray polarimeter PoGOLite in the northern hemisphere during the summer campaign of 2013 inspired us, the team consisting mostly of students and senior researchers, to develop a Modular Monitor of the Cosmic Neutral Emission (MMCNE) prototype that can be flown on the high-altitude balloons to study two components of neutral emission, namely spectra of neutrons and of gamma-rays in the upper layers of Earth atmosphere. Instrument modular concept, and some of the simulated detection characteristics for the selected layout will be presented in this paper.

Abstract

The Tunka-HISCORE wide-angle Cherenkov array, one part of the planned TAIGA integrated gamma observatory intended for investigations in the field of high-energy (>30 TeV) gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics, is deployed in the Tunka Valley (Buryat Republic). The first results from operating a prototype array composed of nine stations spread over an area of ∼0.1 square kilometers during the winter of 2013–2014 are presented. Data processing techniques are described, along with data on the accuracy of reconstructing the position of a shower’s axis, energy, and angle of arrival. The differential spectrum of all cosmic-ray particles in a shower in the energy range of 2 × 1014 to 2 × 1016 eV is presented and compared to the available data.

Abstract

The Tunka-133 Cherenkov light array for the detection of extensive air showers (EAS) acquires data over the five winters from 2009 to 2014. The direction of arrival, the shower core coordinates on the plane of observation, the primary energy, and the depth of the shower maximum are reconstructed for each EAS. A differential all-particle energy spectrum is obtained in the energy range of 6 × 1015–3 × 1018 eV over 1540 h, along with the energy dependence of the average depth of the shower maximum in the range of 6 × 1016–3 × 1018 eV. Based on this dependence, the variation in the average composition of the primary cosmic rays is estimated as a function of energy.

Abstract

In this paper we present the Inverted-Conical light guide designed for optical crosstalk reduction in the scintillator-MAPMT assemblies. The research was motivated by the 30% crosstalk observed in UFFO X-ray telescope , UBAT, during the preliminary calibration with MAPMTs of 64 2.88 × 2.88 mm2 pixels and identically gridded YSO crystal matrices. We began the study with the energy and crosstalk calibrations of the detector, then we constructed a GEANT4 simulation with the customized metallic film model as the MAPMT photocathode . The simulation reproduced more than 70% of the crosstalk and explained it as a consequence of the total reflection produced by the photocathode. The result indicated that the crosstalk mechanism could be a common case in most of the contact-assembled scintillation detectors. The concept of the Inverted-Conical light guide was to suppress the total reflection by contracting the incident angle of the scintillation. We optimized the design in the simulation and fabricated a test sample. The test sample reduced 52% crosstalk with a loss of 6% signal yield. The idea of the Inverted-Conical light guide can be adapted by scintillation detectors multi-pixel, imaging-purpose scintillation detectors such as the ultra-fast GRB observatory UFFO-UBAT, whose performances are sensitive to responding time, image resolution, and geometrical modifications.

Abstract

In TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma-ray Astronomy) detector we are commissioning the first Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT). The telescope drive system comprises a motor controller and two stepper motors for axis control. For the pointing calibration of the telescope a CCD-camera is installed on the reflector dish of the telescope. The position of the CCD-camera allows us capturing both the Cherenkov camera and the observed source. In this report we describe the telescope positioning and the drive system software as well as the control of the CCD-camera data acquisition, archiving and processing system.

Abstract

The UFFO/Lomonosov has been successfully launched into Sun synchronous orbit and is operational through tests and calibrations since its launch on Apr. 28, 2016. As a pathfinder of UFFO, it will be the first space instrument to use a fast slewing mirror which reduce the trigger latency of optical telescope, less than a second, to explore early time domain of GRB evolution. In this article, we will report in detail the first mission, UFFO/Lomonosov, for the rapid response to observe early photons from GRBs in orbit.

Abstract

We report the first ground-based observation of the CATS-LIDAR onboard the ISS by the TAIGA-HiSCORE gamma-ray facility, and the MASTER-Tunka Robotic telescope. HiSCORE detects unscattered laser light directly from the ISS, at up to km-scale distance from the laser beam spot on ground. The ISS-LIDAR turns out to be a unique calibration tool, in particular to verify the absolute astronomical pointing of HiSCORE. We detected the LIDAR for 11 ISS-passages; among these were observations of forward scattering of the laser beam in dense clouds, which might carry information complementary to the LIDAR technique. We expect other air Cherenkov installations like IACTs to benefit from this light source.

Abstract

The Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) is the first orbital instrument, using motorized mirror for observations of the space, designed to shed light on first seconds of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) prompt UV/optical emission. The SMT is main component of the Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO). Once GRB is detected by UFFO X-ray coded mask camera, SMT turns its motorized mirror within seconds to observe optical and UV emission of GRB. After several years of delay on its launch, UFFO was finally launched in 28 April 2016. Launch took place onboard Lomonosov satellite from new Russian kosmodrom Vostochny. Several space tests have been performed during that period, which proved the concept of SMT and gave precise values of SMT sensitivity and resolution. For the first time in the space observations, motorized mirror system is able to trace objects despite the drift of telescope FOV due to satellite orbital movement.
