1. Sequential host-bacteria and bacteria-bacteria interactions determine the microbiome establishment of Nematostella vectensis

Abstract

Abstract Background The microbiota of multicellular organisms undergoes considerable changes during host ontogeny but the general mechanisms that control community assembly and succession are poorly understood. Here, we use bacterial recolonization experiments in Nematostella vectensis as a model to understand general mechanisms determining bacterial establishment and succession. We compared the dynamic establishment of the microbiome on the germfree host and on inert silicone tubes. Results Following the dynamic reconstruction of microbial communities on both substrates, we show that the initial colonization events are strongly influenced by the host but not by the silicone tube, while the subsequent bacteria-bacteria interactions are the main driver of bacterial succession. Interestingly, the recolonization pattern on adult hosts resembles the ontogenetic colonization succession. This process occurs independently of the bacterial composition of the inoculum and can be followed at the level of individual bacteria. To identify potential metabolic traits associated with initial colonization success and potential metabolic interactions among bacteria associated with bacterial succession, we reconstructed the metabolic networks of bacterial colonizers based on their genomes. These analyses revealed that bacterial metabolic capabilities reflect the recolonization pattern, and the degradation of chitin might be a selection factor during early recolonization of the animal. Concurrently, transcriptomic analyses revealed that Nematostella possesses two chitin synthase genes, one of which is upregulated during early recolonization. Conclusions Our results show that early recolonization events are strongly controlled by the host while subsequent colonization depends on metabolic bacteria-bacteria interactions largely independent of host ontogeny. Abstract

Strongly correlated electron systems are one of the central topics in contemporary solid-state physics. Prominent examples for such systems are Kondo lattices, i.e., intermetallic materials in which below a critical temperature, the Kondo temperature T_{K}, the magnetic moments become quenched and the effective masses of the conduction electrons approach the mass of a proton. In Ce- and Yb-based systems, this so-called heavy-fermion behavior is caused by interactions between the strongly localized 4f and itinerant electrons. A major and very controversially discussed issue in this context is how the localized electronic degree of freedom gets involved in the Fermi surface (FS) upon increasing the interaction between both kinds of electrons or upon changing the temperature. In this paper, we show that the FS of a prototypic Kondo lattice, YbRh_{2}Si_{2}, does not change its size or shape in a wide temperature range extending from well below to far above the single-ion Kondo temperature T_{K}∼25 K of this system. This experimental observation, obtained by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, is in remarkable contrast to the widely believed evolution from a large FS, including the 4f degrees of freedom, to a small FS, without the 4f’s, upon increasing temperature. Our results explicitly demonstrate a need to further advance in theoretical approaches based on the periodic Anderson model in order to elucidate the temperature dependence of Fermi surfaces in Kondo lattices.

Abstract

How far do marine larvae disperse in the ocean? Decades of population genetic studies have revealed generally low levels of genetic structure at large spatial scales (hundreds of kilometre). Yet this result, typically based on discrete sampling designs, does not necessarily imply extensive dispersal. Here, we adopt a continuous sampling strategy along 950 km of coast in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea to address this question in four species. In line with expectations, we observe weak genetic structure at a large spatial scale. Nevertheless, our continuous sampling strategy uncovers a pattern of isolation by distance at small spatial scales (few tens of kilometre) in two species. Individual-based simulations indicate that this signal is an expected signature of restricted dispersal. At the other extreme of the connectivity spectrum, two pairs of individuals that are closely related genetically were found more than 290 km apart, indicating long-distance dispersal. Such a combination of restricted dispersal with rare long-distance dispersal events is supported by a high-resolution biophysical model of larval dispersal in the study area, and we posit that it may be common in marine species. Our results bridge population genetic studies with direct dispersal studies and have implications for the design of marine reserve networks.

Abstract

BACKGROUND To determine a prognostic model derived from prostate cancer-enhanced transcripts in whole blood of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) patients and explore its applicability as a surrogate of treatment response. METHODS Six out of twenty-three selected transcripts were identified as specific for detection of metastatic prostate cancer cells in peripheral blood using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Their prognostic value was explored in whole blood samples of a training cohort (n = 22 CRPC patients, New York, USA). A resulting 2-gene panel (2GP) including KLK2 and TMPRSS2 was validated in an independent cohort with pre- and post-treatment blood draws after 9–16 weeks of systemic treament (n = 86 CRPC patients, Munich, Germany). Overall survival (OS), prostate-specific antigen progression-free survival (PSA-PFS), and clinical PFS were analyzed. Kaplan–Meier and cox regression analyses were performed. RESULTS An unfavorable 2GP (≥1 marker positive) identified patients with poor survival (median OS 10.0 months [95%CI 5.7–14.2] vs. not reached; P = 0.023). This was validated in an independent cohort at pre-treatment (median OS 7.8 [95%CI 6.5–9.2] vs. 17.3 months [95%CI 10.7–23.8]; P = 0.004) and post-treatment blood draw (median OS 5.0 [95%CI 0.0–10.0] vs. 18.0 months [95%CI 9.5–26.6]; P = 0.003). The 2GP independently predicted OS on multivariate analysis (hazard ratio 2.1 [95%CI 1.1–4.0]; P = 0.034) and performed better than PSA decline at correlation with OS. Conversion to favorable 2GP during treatment correlated with improved OS (7.8 to 20.9 months), PSA-PFS (2.8 to 12.0 months), and clinical PFS (4.6 to 8.0 months). CONCLUSIONS The established 2GP is prognostic for survival at pre- and post-treatment blood draw in CRPC patients and conversion to favorable 2GP predicts treatment benefit. Abstract

There is growing interest in the quasi-one-dimensional chalcogenide Ta${}_{2}$NiSe${}_{5}$ due to proposals that its ground state is an excitonic insulator. Here, the authors report a comparative spectroscopic study of Ta${}_{2}$NiSe${}_{5}$ and Ta${}_{2}$NiS${}_{5}$ single crystals and show that the excited states of Ta${}_{2}$NiSe${}_{5}$ can be described in terms of strongly overlapping exciton complexes along the Ta-Ni chains -- conditions highly conducive for the formation of an excitonic condensate. Their results offer a wealth of information on lattice and quasiparticle dynamics, as well as on excitons and their many-body interactions, that will support detailed assessments of the excitonic insulator hypothesis.

Abstract

The excitonic insulator (EI) is an intriguing phase of condensed excitons undergoing a Bose-Einstein-Condensation (BEC)-type transition. A prominent candidate has been identified in Ta2NiSe5. Ultrafast spectroscopy allows tracing the coherent response of the EI condensate directly in the time domain. Probing the collective electronic response we can identify fingerprints for the Higgs-amplitude equivalent mode of the condensate. In addition we find a peculiar coupling of the EI phase to a low frequency phonon mode. We will discuss the transient response on multiple energies scales ranging from the exciton dynamics to the coherent THz response of the gap. Publisher PDF

Abstract

Sr${}_{2}$IrO${}_{4}$ is considered as a strong spin-orbit coupled equivalent of high-temperature superconducting cuprates. Recent experiments have most notably shown that upon electron doping a pseudogap emerges in Sr${}_{2}$IrO${}_{4}$ and that magnonlike excitations survive the rapid disappearance of long-range magnetic order. However, due to the relatively small crystal sizes and the large Ir neutron cross section, information on charge excitations and magnetism has mostly been gathered using synchrotron-based spectroscopic methods. Here, the authors use Raman scattering on electron-doped Sr${}_{2-x}$La${}_{x}$IrO${}_{4}$ single crystals to carry out a temperature and doping study of the lattice and magnetic excitations, and observe the emergence upon doping of an electron-hole continuum that couples to the phonons. Even in metallic samples, fluctuating magnetic moments and mobile carriers therefore coexist, again in close analogy with the doped cuprates.

Abstract

Finding ways to create and control the spin-dependent properties of two-dimensional electron states (2DESs) is a major challenge for the elaboration of novel spin-based devices. Spin–orbit and exchange–magnetic interactions (SOI and EMI) are two fundamental mechanisms that enable access to the tunability of spin-dependent properties of carriers. The silicon surface of HoRh2Si2 appears to be a unique model system, where concurrent SOI and EMI can be visualized and controlled by varying the temperature. The beauty and simplicity of this system lie in the 4f moments, which act as a multiple tuning instrument on the 2DESs, as the 4f projections parallel and perpendicular to the surface order at essentially different temperatures. Here we show that the SOI locks the spins of the 2DESs exclusively in the surface plane when the 4f moments are disordered: the Rashba-Bychkov effect. When the temperature is gradually lowered and the system experiences magnetic order, the rising EMI progressively competes with the SOI leading to a fundamental change in the spin-dependent properties of the 2DESs. The spins rotate and reorient toward the out-of-plane Ho 4f moments. Our findings show that the direction of the spins and the spin-splitting of the two-dimensional electrons at the surface can be manipulated in a controlled way by using only one parameter: the temperature., This work was supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) (Grant Nos. Abstract

We report the complex dielectric function along and perpendicular to the IrO2 planes in the layered perovskite Sr2IrO4 determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the spectral range from 12 meV to 6 eV. Thin high quality single crystals were stacked to measure the c-axis optical conductivity. In the phonon response we identified 10 infrared-active modes polarized within the basal plane and only four modes polarized along the c-axis, in full agreement with first-principle lattice dynamics calculations. We also observed a strong optical anisotropy in the near-infrared spectra arising from direct transitions between Ir 5d t2g Jeff = 1/2 and Jeff = 3/2 bands, which transition probability is highly suppressed for light polarized along the c-axis. The spectra are analyzed and discussed in terms of relativistic LSDA+U band structure calculations.

Abstract

The results of a measurement of the proton structure function F_2(x,Q^2)and the virtual photon-proton cross section are reported for momentum transfers squared Q^2 between 0.35 GeV^2 and 3.5 GeV^2 and for Bjorken-x values down to 6 10^{-6} using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1995. The data represent an increase in kinematic reach to lower x and Q^2 values of about a factor of 5 compared to previous H1 measurements. Including measurements from fixed target experiments the rise of F_2 with decreasing x is found to be less steep for the lowest Q^2 values measured. Abstract

Objective To determine the impact of elevated neuroendocrine serum markers on treatment outcome in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) undergoing treatment with abiraterone in a post-chemotherapy setting. Patients and Method Chromogranin A (CGa) and neurone-specific enolase (NSE) were determined in serum drawn before treatment with abiraterone from 45 patients with mCRPC. Outcome measures were overall survival (OS), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response defined by a PSA level decline of ≥50%, PSA progression-free survival (PSA-PFS), and clinical or radiographic PFS. Results The CGa and NSE serum levels did not correlate (P = 0.6). Patients were stratified in to low- (nine patients), intermediate- (18) or high-risk (18) groups according to elevation of none, one, or both neuroendocrine markers, respectively. The risk groups correlated with decreasing median OS (median OS not reached vs 15.3 vs 6.6 months; P < 0.001), decreasing median clinical or radiographic PFS (8.3 vs 4.4 vs 2.7 months; P = 0.001) and decreasing median PSA-PFS (12.0 vs 3.2 vs 2.7 months; P = 0.012). In multivariate Cox regression analysis the combination of CGa and NSE (≥1 marker positive vs both markers negative) remained significant predictors of OS, clinical or radiographic PFS, and PSA-PFS. We did not observe a correlation with PSA response (63% vs 35% vs 31%; P = 0.2). Conclusion Chromogranin A and NSE did not predict PSA response in patients with mCRPC treated with abiraterone. However, we observed a correlation with shorter PSA-PFS, clinical or radiographic PFS, and OS. This might be due to an elevated risk of developing resistance under abiraterone treatment related to neuroendocrine differentiation.

Abstract

We have used Raman scattering to investigate the magnetic excitations and lattice dynamics in the prototypical spin-orbit Mott insulators Sr_{2}IrO_{4} and Sr_{3}Ir_{2}O_{7}. Both compounds exhibit pronounced two-magnon Raman scattering features with different energies, line shapes, and temperature dependencies, which in part reflect the different influence of long-range frustrating exchange interactions. Additionally, we find strong Fano asymmetries in the line shapes of low-energy phonon modes in both compounds, which disappear upon cooling below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures. These unusual phonon anomalies indicate that the spin-orbit coupling in Mott-insulating iridates is not sufficiently strong to quench the orbital dynamics in the paramagnetic state.

Abstract

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the structure of solid phenanthrene (C14H10) was investigated up to 25.7 GPa through synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and an evolutionary algorithm for crystal structure prediction based on van der Waals density functional calculations. We observed the onset of a phase transition around 8 GPa from the monoclinic P21 low-pressure phase with two molecules per unit cell arranged in a herringbone fashion to a new high-pressure phase. The best candidate structure for this phase exhibits three molecules in a P1 triclinic unit cell in a parallel arrangement, stabilized by dominant π–π intermolecular interactions. The P21 and P1 phases coexist in the pressure range from 8 to 13 GPa, whereas above 13 GPa only the P1 high-pressure phase is present. At higher pressures (P > 20 GPa), experiments and first-principles calculations suggest a tendency toward amorphization.

Abstract

The excitonic insulator is an intriguing electronic phase of quasi-condensed excitons. A prominent candidate is the small bandgap semiconductor Ta2NiSe5, in which excitons are believed to undergo a BEC-like transition. But experimental evidence for the existence of a coherent condensate in this material is still missing. A direct fingerprint of such a state would be the observation of its collective modes, which are equivalent to the Higgs- and Goldstone-modes in superconductors. Here we report evidence for the existence of a coherent amplitude response in the excitonic insulator phase of Ta2NiSe5. Using non-linear excitations with short laser pulses we identify a phonon-coupled state of the condensate that can be understood as a coupling of its electronic Higgs-mode to a low frequency phonon. The Higgs-mode contribution substantiates the picture of an electronically driven phase transition and characterizes the transient order parameter of the excitonic insulator as a function of temperature and excitation density., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

Abstract

First clinical experiences with abiraterone and cabazitaxel for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer patients following docetaxel chemotherapy are reported.We describe PSA response rates and disease control rates determined by imaging studies at 3 months as well as side effects in the daily routine. All patients were treated within the"compassionate use" programs of cabazitaxel and abiraterone or treated according to their inclusion and exclusion criteria at the "Technische Universitat Munchen".Of 54 patients, 15 were treated with cabazitaxel and 39 with abiraterone. In patients treated with cabazitaxel, after 3 months of therapy the PSA reduction rate> 50% was 46.2%, the PSA progression rate was 15.4%, and the disease control rate was 83.3%. Main grade 3/4 hematotoxicities were neutropenia (40%) and anemia (20%). Febrile neutropenia was observed in 2 of 15 (13.3%) patients. Main non-hematological grade 3/4 toxicities were diarrhea (13.3%) and polyneuropathy (13.3%). In patients treated with abiraterone, after 3 months of therapy the PSA reduction rate>50% was 35.1%, the PSA progression rate was 46.0%, and the disease control rate was 47.1%. Main grade 3/4 hematotoxicities were anemia (5.1%) and thrombocytopenia (5.1%). Main non-hematological toxicities were fatigue (20.5%), sweating (17.9%), and constipation (10.3%).Utilization of cabazitaxel and abiraterone in the daily routine show response rates comparable to their approval studies with acceptable side effects.

The paper describes the implementation of S3R (core neutronics) and RELAP5-3D (RCS thermal-hydraulics) in a PWR training simulator for the Grohnde NPP located at the Kraftwerks-Simulator-Gesellschaft (KSG) in Essen, Germany. The models are briefly described as well as the coupling between these two codes and the interface with the rest of the simulator. The paper also describes the procedure that will be used to update the simulator core data after future core reloads. Results from the integrated simulator are presented. Erfahrungen mit dem gekoppelten Codesystem S3R/RELAP53D in Trainingssimulatoren. Der Artikel beschreibt die Implementierung von S3R (Kern-Neutronik) und RELAP5-3D (Reaktorkuhlsystemthermohydraulik) in einem DWR-Trainingssimulator fur das Kernkraftwerk Grohnde bei der KraftwerksSimulator-Gesellschaft (KSG) in Essen, Deutschland. Die Modelle, die Kopplung zwischen den beiden Codes, sowie die Schnittstelle zum Rest des Simulators werden kurz vorgestellt. Der Artikel beschreibt auserdem das Verfahren, welches genutzt wird, um den Simulatorkern nach zukunftigen Kernbeladungen zu aktualisieren. Ergebnisse des integrierten Simulators werden vorgestellt.

Abstract

We studied the effect of high pressure on three phenacenes, aromatic molecules with a zig-zag configuration of the benzene rings. The lattice structure and vibrational dynamics of crystalline phenanthrene (C14H10, three benzene rings), chrysene (C18H12, four), and picene (C22H14, five) were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements. Raman spectra were compared with theoretical ones obtained from ab-initio Density Functional Theory calculations. Experimental and theoretical results allowed to identify the onset of a structural transition in phenanthrene at 7.8 GPa under hydrostatic conditions and at 5.7 GPa under non-hydrostatic conditions. We found that this transition is related to a reorientantion of the molecules in the ab plane. On the contrary, chrysene and picene do not undergo any phase transition in the investigated pressure range, thus suggesting that molecular size plays an important role in the occurence of pressure induced structural modifications in aromatic compounds.

Abstract

${\mathrm{YbCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ is considered to serve as a stable-valent, isoelectronic reference for the extensively studied heavy-fermion system ${\mathrm{YbRh}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ which is situated very close to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP). The investigation of the Fermi surface (FS) topology of ${\mathrm{YbCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ and its comparison to ${\mathrm{YbRh}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ could help to unravel the strongly disputed nature of this quantum phase transition, whether it originates from a ``local'' or ``itinerant'' QCP. Here we study the electronic structure and FS of ${\mathrm{YbCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ by means of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and compare it to ab initio band structure calculations and FS modeling. Our approach allows the electronic structure at the surface and in the bulk to be disentangled. Identifying the bulk contribution, we demonstrate that ${\mathrm{YbCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ exhibits a ``small'' FS, confirming the formation of a ``large'' FS in ${\mathrm{YbRh}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$. This favors an itinerant QCP, instead of the widely discussed local scenario. Our study demonstrates that ARPES is a reliable tool for the study of bulk electronic states in intermetallic Kondo lattice systems despite the complexity induced by their three-dimensional character and the presence of pronounced surface states.

Abstract

We here present how a self-consistent solution of the dynamical mean field theory equations can be obtained using exact diagonalization of an Anderson impurity model with accuracies comparable to those found using renormalization group or quantum Monte Carlo methods. We show how one can solve a correlated quantum impurity coupled to several hundred uncorrelated bath sites, using a restricted active basis set. The number of bath sites determines the resolution of the obtained spectral function, which consists of peaks roughly spaced by the band width divided by the number of bath sites. The self-consistency cycles are fully performed on the real frequency axis and expressed as numerical stable matrix operations. The same impurity solver has been used on Ligand Field and finite size cluster calculations and is capable of treating involved Hamiltonians including the full rotational invariant Coulomb interaction, spin-orbit coupling and low symmetry crystal-fields. The proposed method allows for the calculation of a variety of correlation functions at little extra cost.

Abstract

Carrying a large, pure spin magnetic moment of 7 μB per atom in the half-filled 4f shell, divalent europium is an outstanding element for assembling novel magnetic devices in which a two-dimensional electron gas may be polarized due to exchange interaction with an underlying magnetically-active Eu layer. Here we show that the Si-Rh-Si surface trilayer of the antiferromagnet EuRh2Si2 bears a surface state, which exhibits an unexpected and large spin splitting controllable by temperature. The splitting sets in below ~32.5 K, well above the ordering temperature of the Eu 4f moments (~24.5 K) in the bulk, indicating a larger ordering temperature in the topmost Eu layers. The driving force for the itinerant ferromagnetism at the surface is the aforementioned exchange interaction. Such a splitting may also be induced into states of functional surface layers deposited onto the surface of EuRh2Si2 or similarly ordered magnetic materials with metallic or semiconducting properties., This work was supported by the DFG (grant VY64/1-1, GE602/2-1, GRK1621). Abstract

A measurement of the inclusive cross section for the deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off protons at HERA is presented at momentum transfers $8.5 \leq Q^2 \leq 35 GeV^2$ and large inelasticity $y = 0.7$, i.e. for the Bjorken-x range $0.00013 \leq x \leq 0.00055$. Using a next-to-leading order QCD fit to the structure function F_2 at lower y values, the contribution of F_2 to the measured cross section at high y is calculated and, by subtraction, the longitudinal structure function F_{L} is determined for the first time with an average value of $F_L=0.52 \pm 0.03 (stat)$^ {+0.25}_{-0.22}$ (syst) at $Q^2=15.4 GeV^2$ and $x=0.000243$., 17 pages, latex, 4 Figures

Abstract

We present high-quality optical data and density functional perturbation theory calculations for the vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C${}_{22}$H${}_{14}$) under pressure up to 8 GPa. First-principles calculations reproduce with a remarkable accuracy the pressure effects on both frequency and intensities of the observed phonon peaks. We use the projection on molecular eigenmodes to unambiguously fit the experimental spectra, resolving complicated spectral structures, in a system with hundreds of phonon modes. With these projections, we can also quantify the loss of molecular character under pressure. Our results indicate that picene, despite a $\ensuremath{\sim}20%$ compression of the unit cell, remains substantially a molecular solid up to 8 GPa, with phonon modes displaying a smooth and uniform hardening with pressure, without any evidence of structural phase transitions. The Gr\"uneisen parameter of the 1380 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ ${a}_{1}$ Raman peak (${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{p}=0.1$) is much lower than the effective value (${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{d}=0.8$) due to K doping. Therefore, doping and pressure have very different effects and it can be argued that softening of the 1380 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ mode is probably due to coupling with electronic states in K-doped solid picene.

Abstract

At the electron-proton collider HERA the inclusive D-*+/- meson photoproduction cross section has been measured with the H1 detector in two different, but partly overlapping, kinematical regions. For the first, where [W-gamma p] approximate to 200 GeV and Q(2) < 0.01 GeV2, the result is sigma(gamma p --> c(c) over barX$) = (13.2 +/- 2.2(-1.7-4.8)(+2.1+9.9)) mu b. The second measurement for Q(2) < 4 GeV2 yields sigma(gamma p) --> c(c) over barX$) = (9.3 +/- 2.1(-1.8-3.2)(+1.9+6.9)) mu b at [W-gamma p] approximate to 142 GeV and sigma(gamma p --> c(c) over barX$) = (20.6 +/- 5.5(-3.9-7.2)(+4.3+15.4)) mu b at [W-gamma p] approximate to 230 GeV, respectively. The third error accounts for an additional uncertainty due to the proton and photon parton density parametrizations. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the D-*+/- transverse momentum and rapidity. The results compare reasonably well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Evidence for diffractive photoproduction of charm quarks is presented.

Abstract

The total cross sections for the elastic electroproduction of $\rh0$ and $J/\Psi$ mesons for $Q^2$ $>$ 8 GeV$^2$ and $ \simeq 90$ GeV/c$^2$ are measured at HERA with the H1 detector. The measurements are for an integrated electron$-$proton luminosity of $\simeq$~3~pb$^{-1}$. The dependences of the total virtual photon$-$proton ($\gamma^* p$) cross sections on $Q^2$, $W$ and the momentum transfer squared to the proton ($t$), and, for the $\rho$, the dependence on the polar decay angle ($\cos \theta^*$), are presented. The $J/\Psi$ : $\rh0$ cross section ratio is determined. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical models and of the interplay of hard and soft physics processes.

Abstract

Nature Communications 4, 1646 (2013). doi:10.1038/ncomms2654, Many-body interactions in crystalline solids can be conveniently described in terms of quasiparticles with strongly renormalized masses as compared with those of non-interacting particles. Examples of extreme mass renormalization are on the one hand graphene, where the charge carriers obey the linear dispersion relation of massless Dirac fermions, and on the other hand heavy-fermion materials where the effective electron mass approaches the mass of a proton. Here we show that both extremes, Dirac fermions, like they are found in graphene and extremely heavy quasiparticles characteristic for Kondo materials, may not only coexist in a solid but can also undergo strong mutual interactions. Using the example of EuRh₂Si₂, we explicitly demonstrate that these interactions can take place at the surface and in the bulk. The presence of the linear dispersion is imposed solely by the crystal symmetry, whereas the existence of heavy quasiparticles is caused by the localized nature of the 4f states., Published by Nature Publishing Group, London

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the total photoproduction cross section performed with the H1 detector at HERA. For an average centre of mass energy of 200 GeV a value of σtotλp=165±2±11µb has been obtained. A detailed analysis of the data in adequate kinematic regions enabled a decomposition of the total cross section in its elastic, single diffractive dissociation and remaining non-diffractive parts, based on safe assumptions on the double diffractive dissociation contribution.

Abstract

First clinical experiences with abiraterone and cabazitaxel for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer patients following docetaxel chemotherapy are reported.We describe PSA response rates and disease control rates determined by imaging studies at 3 months as well as side effects in the daily routine. All patients were treated within the"compassionate use" programs of cabazitaxel and abiraterone or treated according to their inclusion and exclusion criteria at the "Technische Universität München".Of 54 patients, 15 were treated with cabazitaxel and 39 with abiraterone. In patients treated with cabazitaxel, after 3 months of therapy the PSA reduction rate50% was 46.2%, the PSA progression rate was 15.4%, and the disease control rate was 83.3%. Main grade 3/4 hematotoxicities were neutropenia (40%) and anemia (20%). Febrile neutropenia was observed in 2 of 15 (13.3%) patients. Main non-hematological grade 3/4 toxicities were diarrhea (13.3%) and polyneuropathy (13.3%). In patients treated with abiraterone, after 3 months of therapy the PSA reduction rate50% was 35.1%, the PSA progression rate was 46.0%, and the disease control rate was 47.1%. Main grade 3/4 hematotoxicities were anemia (5.1%) and thrombocytopenia (5.1%). Main non-hematological toxicities were fatigue (20.5%), sweating (17.9%), and constipation (10.3%).Utilization of cabazitaxel and abiraterone in the daily routine show response rates comparable to their approval studies with acceptable side effects.

Abstract

A search for direct production of new leptons in the mass range from 10 GeV up to 225 GeV is presented by the H1 experiment at HERA. The data were obtained during 1993 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 528 nb −1 . The search includes heavy lepton decays to final states e ( ν ) γ and e ( ν ) W , e ( ν ) Z with the subsequent decay of the W and Z bosons into jets or lepton pairs. No evidence was found for the production of new massive electrons or neutrinos in any of the decay channels. Rejection limits for excited electrons and neutrinos are derived.

Abstract

Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of charged particles measured in electron-proton collisions at low Q 2 with the H1 detector at HERA. The transverse momentum distribution extends up to 8 GeV/ c . Its shape is found to be harder than that observed in p p collisions at comparable centre-of-mass energies √S γp ≈ √S p p ≈ 200 GeV , and also harder than in γp collisions at lower energies √ S γp ≈ 18 GeV. Results from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations agree with the measured transverse momentum and pseudorapidity cross sections.

The cross section of the charged current process e − p → v e + hadrons is measured at HERA for transverse momenta of the hadron system larger than 25 GeV. The size of the cross section exhibits the W propagator.

Abstract

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) was used to study the Fermi surface of the heavy-fermion system ${\mathrm{YbRh}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ at a temperature of about 10 K, i.e., a factor of 2 below the Kondo energy scale. We observed sharp structures with a well-defined topology, which were analyzed by comparing with results of band-structure calculations based on the local-density approximation (LDA). The observed bulk Fermi surface presents strong similarities with that expected for a trivalent Yb state, but is slightly larger, has a strong $\mathrm{Yb}\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}4f$ character, and deviates from the LDA results by a larger region without states around the $\overline{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point. These properties are qualitatively explained in the framework of a simple $f\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}d$ hybridization model. Our analysis highlights the importance of taking into account surface states and doing an appropriate projection along ${\mathbit{k}}_{z}$ when comparing ARPES data with results from theoretical calculations.

These properties are qualitatively explained in the framework of a simple f-d hybridization model. Our analysis highlights the importance of taking into account surface states and doing an appropriate projection along k(z) when comparing ARPES data with results from theoretical calculations.

A new method was developed to evaluate the signals of a calorimeter with neural networks. After training with simulated data, energy reconstruction and particle identification is possible. The method was developed for the liquid argon calorimeter of the H1 experiment at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, but it uses quantities which are available at any segmented calorimeter.

Abstract

We present a search for excited electrons, neutrinos and quarks using the H1 detector at the $ep$ collider HERA, based on data taken in 1994 with an integrated luminosity of 2.75 pb$^{-1}$. Radiative decays of excited quarks and neutrinos have been investigated as well as decays of excited electrons into all possible electroweak gauge bosons. Abstract

The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is investigated in jet production at the HERA ep collider, using data collected by the H1 experiment. Measurements of the differential inclusive jet cross-sections dsigep/dEt* and dsigmep/deta*, where Et* and eta* are the transverse energy and the pseudorapidity of the jets in the virtual photon-proton centre of mass frame, are presented for 0 < Q2 < 49 GeV2 and 0.3 < y < 0.6. The interpretation of the results in terms of the structure of the virtual photon is discussed. Abstract

Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles produced in deep inelastic scattering are measured as a function of the kinematic variables x_B and Q2 using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The data are compared to different parton emission models, either with or without ordering of the emissions in transverse momentum. The data provide evidence for a relatively large amount of parton radiation between the current and the remnant systems., 21 pages, latex, 7 Figures

Abstract

A search for leptoquarks at HERA was performed in H1 using 1994 $e^+ p$ data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about $3 \pb^{-1}$. Single leptoquarks were searched for in direct positron-quark fusion processes taking into account possible decays into lepton-quark pairs of either the first, the second, or the third generation. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is found in the various final states studied and mass dependent exclusion limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings of the leptoquarks. Compared with earlier results from an analysis of $e^-p$ data, exclusion limits are considerably improved for leptoquarks which could be produced via $e^+$-{\it valence~quark} fusion. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour conserving couplings, masses up to $275 \GeV$ (depending on the leptoquark type) are excluded for coupling values larger than $\sqrt{ 4 \pi \alpha_{em}}$. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour violating couplings, masses up to $225 \GeV$ are excluded for the first time in a direct search for couplings with leptons of the second or third generation larger than $\sqrt{ 4 \pi \alpha_{em}}$. Abstract

A contact interaction analysis is presented to search for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model in deep inelastic $e^\pm p \rightarrow e^\pm \, hadrons$ scattering. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA and correspond to integrated luminosities of $0.909 \ {\rm pb}^{-1}$ and $2.947 \ {\rm pb}^{-1}$ for electron and positron beams, respectively. The differential cross sections $d\sigma / dQ^2$ are measured in the $Q^2$ range bet\-ween $160 \ \GeV^2$ and $20,000 \ \GeV^2$. The absence of any significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is used to constrain the couplings and masses of new leptoquarks and to set limits on electron--quark compositeness scales and on the radius of light quarks., Comment: 16 pages, latex, 2 figures appended as uuencoded file

Photoproduction of 2-jet events is studied with the H1 detector at HERA. Parton cross sections are extracted from the data by an unfolding method using leading order parton-jet correlations of a QCD generator. A leading order determination of the gluon density in the proton has been performed in the fractional momentum range $1.9 \cdot 10^{-3} < x_{g/p} < 0.18$ by measuring multi-jet events from boson-gluon fusion in deep-inelastic scattering with the H1 detector at the electron-proton collider HERA. This direct determination of the gluon density was performed in a kinematic region previously not accessible. Abstract

A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. The dependence of this contribution on x-pomeron is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of a factorised structure function is presented. This structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance., 16 pages, latex, including 3 figures
