Abstract

Abstract The Aria cryogenic distillation plant, located in Sardinia, Italy, is a key component of the DarkSide-20k experimental program for WIMP dark matter searches at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. Aria is designed to purify the argon, extracted from underground wells in Colorado, USA, and used as the DarkSide-20k target material, to detector-grade quality. In this paper, we report the first measurement of argon isotopic separation by distillation with the 26 m tall Aria prototype. We discuss the measurement of the operating parameters of the column and the observation of the simultaneous separation of the three stable argon isotopes: $${}^{36}\hbox {Ar}$$ 36 Ar , $${}^{38}\textrm{Ar}$$ 38 Ar , and $${}^{40}\textrm{Ar}$$ 40 Ar . We also provide a detailed comparison of the experimental results with commercial process simulation software. This measurement of isotopic separation of argon is a significant achievement for the project, building on the success of the initial demonstration of isotopic separation of nitrogen using the same equipment in 2019.

Abstract

Abstract We present a novel approach for the search of dark matter in the DarkSide-50 experiment, relying on Bayesian Networks. This method incorporates the detector response model into the likelihood function, explicitly maintaining the connection with the quantity of interest. No assumptions about the linearity of the problem or the shape of the probability distribution functions are required, and there is no need to morph signal and background spectra as a function of nuisance parameters. By expressing the problem in terms of Bayesian Networks, we have developed an inference algorithm based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo to calculate the posterior probability. A clever description of the detector response model in terms of parametric matrices allows us to study the impact of systematic variations of any parameter on the final results. Our approach not only provides the desired information on the parameter of interest, but also potential constraints on the response model. Our results are consistent with recent published analyses and further refine the parameters of the detector response model.

Abstract

Neutron-induced nuclear reactions play an important role in the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. Their excitation functions are, from an experimental point of view, usually difficult to measure. Nevertheless, in the last decades, big efforts have led to a better understanding of their role in the primordial nucleosynthesis network. In this work, we apply the Trojan Horse Method to extract the cross section at astrophysical energies for the ^3 He(n,p) ^3 H reaction after a detailed study of the ^2 H( ^3 He,pt)H three-body process. Data extracted from the present measurement are compared with other published sets. The reaction rate is also calculated, and the impact on the Big Bang nucleosynthesis is examined in detail.

Abstract

Abstract A double-phase argon Time Projection Chamber (TPC), with an active mass of 185 g, has been designed and constructed for the Recoil Directionality (ReD) experiment. The aim of the ReD project is to investigate the directional sensitivity of argon-based TPCs via columnar recombination to nuclear recoils in the energy range of interest (20– $$200\,\hbox {keV}_{nr}$$ 200 keV nr ) for direct dark matter searches. The key novel feature of the ReD TPC is a readout system based on cryogenic Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), which are employed and operated continuously for the first time in an argon TPC. Over the course of 6 months, the ReD TPC was commissioned and characterised under various operating conditions using $$\gamma $$ γ -ray and neutron sources, demonstrating remarkable stability of the optical sensors and reproducibility of the results. The scintillation gain and ionisation amplification of the TPC were measured to be $$g_1 = (0.194 \pm 0.013)$$ g 1 = ( 0.194 ± 0.013 ) photoelectrons/photon and $$g_2 = (20.0 \pm 0.9)$$ g 2 = ( 20.0 ± 0.9 ) photoelectrons/electron, respectively. The ratio of the ionisation to scintillation signals (S2/S1), instrumental for the positive identification of a candidate directional signal induced by WIMPs, has been investigated for both nuclear and electron recoils. At a drift field of 183 V/cm, an S2/S1 dispersion of 12% was measured for nuclear recoils of approximately 60– $$90\,\hbox {keV}_{nr}$$ 90 keV nr , as compared to 18% for electron recoils depositing 60 keV of energy. The detector performance reported here meets the requirements needed to achieve the principal scientific goals of the ReD experiment in the search for a directional effect due to columnar recombination. A phenomenological parameterisation of the recombination probability in LAr is presented and employed for modeling the dependence of scintillation quenching and charge yield on the drift field for electron recoils between 50–500 keV and fields up to 1000 V/cm.

Abstract

Abstract Aria is a plant hosting a $${350}\,\hbox {m}$$ 350 m cryogenic isotopic distillation column, the tallest ever built, which is being installed in a mine shaft at Carbosulcis S.p.A., Nuraxi-Figus (SU), Italy. Aria is one of the pillars of the argon dark-matter search experimental program, lead by the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration. It was designed to reduce the isotopic abundance of $${^{39}\hbox {Ar}}$$ 39 Ar in argon extracted from underground sources, called Underground Argon (UAr), which is used for dark-matter searches. Indeed, $${^{39}\hbox {Ar}}$$ 39 Ar is a $$\beta $$ β -emitter of cosmogenic origin, whose activity poses background and pile-up concerns in the detectors. In this paper, we discuss the requirements, design, construction, tests, and projected performance of the plant for the isotopic cryogenic distillation of argon. We also present the successful results of the isotopic cryogenic distillation of nitrogen with a prototype plant.

Abstract

Abstract Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase. The “standard” EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms (“neutral bremsstrahlung”, NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche scintillation in the NIR at higher electric fields, is due to transitions between excited atomic states. In this work, we have for the first time demonstrated two alternative techniques of the optical readout of two-phase argon detectors, in the visible and NIR range, using a silicon photomultiplier matrix and electroluminescence due to either neutral bremsstrahlung or avalanche scintillation. The amplitude yield and position resolution were measured for these readout techniques, which allowed to assess the detection threshold for electron and nuclear recoils in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first practical application of the NBrS effect in detection science.

Abstract

The 26Al abundance holds a special role in present-day astrophysics, since it is a probe of active nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy and a valuable constraint of Galactic core-collapse supernovae rate. It is estimated through the detection of the 1809-keV γ-line of the daughter 26Mg and from the superabundance of 26Mg in comparison with the most abundant 24Mg isotope in meteorites. Accurate knowledge of the reaction rates involving 26Al, its stable counterpart 27Al and 24Mg is then mandatory. Moreover, these nuclei enter the MgAl cycle playing an important role in the production of Al and Mg isotopes. Recently, high-resolution stellar surveys have shown that the Mg-Al anti-correlation in red giants of globular clusters may hide the existence of multiple stellar populations, and that the relative abundances of Mg isotopes may not show correlation with Al.The common thread running through these astrophysical scenarios is the 27Al(p,α)24Mg reaction, which is the main 27Al destruction channel and directly correlates its abundance with the 24Mg one. Since available reaction rates show an order of magnitude uncertainty owing to the vanishingly small cross section at astrophysical energies, we have applied the Trojan Horse Method to deduce the reaction rate with no need of extrapolation. The indirect measurement made it possible to assess the contribution of the 84-keV resonance and to lower the upper limits on the strength of nearby resonances, with potential important impact for astrophysics. In particular, modifications in the 27Al and 24Mg abundances up to ∼30% are predicted for intermediate mass stars.

Abstract

Observations of abundances and isotopic ratio determinations in stars yield powerful constraints on stellar models. In particular, the oxygen isotopic ratios are of particular interest because they are affected not only by nucleosynthesis but also by mixing processes, which are not very well-understood yet. This review is focused on the measurements via the Trojan Horse Method (THM) that have been carried out to investigate the low-energy cross sections of proton and neutron-induced reactions on 17O as well as the proton-induced reaction on 18O, overcoming extrapolation procedures and enhancement effects due to electron screening. The (p,α) reactions induced on these oxygen isotopes are of paramount importance for the nucleosynthesis in a number of stellar sites, including red giants (RGs), asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, massive stars, and classical novae. In detail, the indirect measurement of the low-energy region of 17O(p,α)14N was performed. The strength of the narrow resonance at 65 keV was evaluated, and it was used to renormalize the corresponding resonance strength in the 17O+p radiative capture channel. The reaction rate was then evaluated for both the 17O(p,α)14N and the 17O(p,γ)18F reactions, and significant differences of 30 and 20% with respect the literature data were found, respectively, in the temperature range relevant for RG, AGB, and massive stars nucleosynthesis. Regarding the 18O(p,α)15N reaction, the strength of the 20 keV resonance was extracted, which is the main contribution to the reaction rate for astrophysical applications. This approach has allowed us to improve the data accuracy of a factor 8.5, as it is based on the measured strength instead of educated guesses or spectroscopic measurements. Finally, the 17O(n,α)14C reaction was studied because of its role during the s-process nucleosynthesis as a possible neutron poison reaction. This study represents the extension of THM to resonant neutron-induced reactions. In this measurement, the subthreshold level centered at −7 keV in the center-of-mass system, corresponding to the 8.039 MeV 18O excited level, was observed. Moreover, the THM measurements showed a clear agreement with the available direct measurements and the additional contribution of the 8.121 MeV 18O level, strongly suppressed in direct measurements because of its l = 3 angular momentum. The contributions of those levels to the total reaction rate were than evaluated for future astrophysical applications.

Abstract

The detection of the neutrinos produced in the p−p chain and in the CNO cycle can be used to test the Standard Solar Model. The 3He(α,γ)7Be reaction is the first reaction of the 2nd and 3rd branch of the p−p chain, therefore, the uncertainty of its cross section sensitively influences the prediction of the 7Be and 8B neutrino fluxes. Despite its importance and the large number of experimental and theoretical works devoted to this reaction, the knowledge on the reaction cross section at energies characterizing the core of the Sun (15 keV - 30 keV) is limited and further experimental efforts are needed to reach the desired (≈ 3%) accuracy. The precise knowledge on the external capture contribution to the 3He(α,γ)7Be reaction cross section is crucial for the theoretical description of the reaction mechanism. In the present work the indirect measurement of this external capture contribution using the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient (ANC) technique is reported. To extract the ANC, the angular distributions of deuterons emitted in the 6Li(3He,d)7Be α-transfer reaction were measured with high precision at EH3e = 3.0 MeV and EH3e = 5.0 MeV. The ANCs were then extracted from comparison of DWBA calculations to the measured data and the zero energy astrophysical S-factor for 3He(α,γ)7Be reaction was found to be 0.534 ± 0.025 keVb.

Abstract

12C +12 C is the main reaction during core and shell carbon burning in massive stars, however, at temperatures higher than 109K when most of the carbon is depleted and its abundance is lower than 16O, the 12C +16 O fusion can also become relevant. Moreover, 12C +16 O reaction can ignite also in the scenario of explosive carbon burning. The astrophysical energy region of interest thus ranges from 3 to 7.2 MeV in the center-of-mass frame. There are various measurements of the cross-section available in the literature, however, they all stop around 4 MeV, making extrapolation necessary at lower energies. To try to solve this uncertainty and corroborate direct measurement the Trojan Horse Method was applied to three-body processes 16O(14N, α24Mg)2H and 16O(14N, p27Al)2H to study the 16O(12C, α)24Mg and 16O(12C, p)27Al reactions.

Abstract

Astrophysical reactions involving radioactive isotopes (RI) often play an important role in high-temperature stellar environments. The experimental studies on the reaction rates for those are still limited mainly due to the technical difficulties in producing high-quality RI beams. A direct measurement of those reactions would be still challenging in many cases, however, we can make a reliable evaluation of the reaction rates by an indirect method or by studying the resonance prorerties. Here we ntroduce recent examples of experimental studies on such RI-involving astrophysical reactions, performed at Center for Nuclear Study, the University of Tokyo, using the low-energy RI beam separator CRIB. One is for the neutron-induced destruction reactions of 7Be in the Big-Bang nucleosynthesis, and the other is the study on the 22Mg(α, p) reaction relevant in X-ray bursts, which was performed with the resonant scattering method from the inverse reaction channel.

Abstract

The carbon-burning process in massive stars mainly occurs via the 12C +12 C. However, at temperatures higher than 109K and considering the increased abundance of 16O produced during the later stages of the heliumburning,the 12C+16O fusion can also become relevant. Moreover, 12C+16O also plays a role in the scenario of explosive carbon burning. Thus, the astrophysical energy region of interest ranges from 3 to 7.2 MeV in the center-of-mass frame. However, the various measurements of the cross-section available in the literature stop around 4 MeV, making extrapolation necessary. To solve this uncertainty and corroborate direct measurement we applied the Trojan Horse Method to three-body processes 16O(14N, α24Mg)2H and 16O(14N, p27Al)2H to study the 12C(16O, α)24Mg and 12C(16O, p)27Al reactions in their entire energy region of astrophysical interest. In this contribution, after briefly describing the method used, the experiment and the preliminary phases of the data analysis will be presented and discussed.

Abstract

Experimental studies on astrophysical reactions involving radioactive isotopes (RI) often accompany technical challenges. Studies on such nuclear reactions have been conducted at the low-energy RI beam separator CRIB, operated by Center for Nuclear Study, the University of Tokyo. We discuss two cases of astrophysical reaction studies at CRIB; one is for the 7Be+n reactions which may affect the primordial 7Li abundance in the Big-Bang nucleosynthesis, and the other is for the 22Mg(α, p) reaction relevantin X-raybursts.

16. A New Reaction Rate of the 27Al(p,α)24Mg Reaction Based on Indirect Measurements at Astrophysical Energies and Implications for 27Al Yields of Intermediate-mass Stars

Abstract

Background: The Li 6 ( p , γ ) Be 7 cross section influences a variety of astrophysical scenarios, including big-bang and stellar nucleosynthesis. In recent years, conflicting results of direct measurements have been published, reporting contradictory low-energy trends. Purpose: To shed light on the contradiction between the existing data sets, the reaction was studied using the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) technique which was up-to-now never used for this reaction. Methods: To derive the ANC, the Li 6 ( He 3 , d ) Be 7 transfer reaction, studied at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania and at the John. D. Fox Superconducting Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University, was re-analyzed, focusing on the proton transfer mechanism [the α transfer process is discussed by Kiss et al. [Phys. Lett. B 807, 135606 (2020)]. The energy of the He 3 beam impinging on a Li 6 target was E lab = 3 MeV and E lab = 5 MeV. The yield of the emitted deuterons was measured with high precision by using silicon Δ E - E telescopes. Results: From the DWBA analysis of the angular distributions of the emitted deuterons populating the ground ( E * = 0.0 MeV; 3 2 − ) and the first excited ( E * = 0.429 MeV ; 1 2 − ) states of Be 7 , the ANCs for the Li 6 + p → Be 7 system were deduced. Furthermore, the recently measured Li 6 ( p , γ ) Be 7 reaction cross sections [Piatti , Phys. Rev. C 102, 052802 (2020)] were also analyzed within this theoretical framework. Excellent agreement was found between ANC values derived indirectly and those determined from the direct data, which strengthens the conclusion of the present work. The astrophysical S factor—at energies characterizing the Sun—for the Li 6 ( p , γ ) Be 7 reaction was calculated using the weighted mean of the experimentally derived ANC values. Conclusions: The result of the present comprehensive study supports the extrapolation of Piatti [Phys. Rev. C 102, 052802 (2020)], Dong [J. Phys. G Nucl. Partic. 44, 045201 (2017)], and Gnech and Marcucci [Nucl. Phys. A 987, 1 (2019)], and thus disfavors the conclusions drawn by He [Phys. Lett. B 725, 287 (2013)] and Xu [Nucl. Phys. A 918, 61 (2013)].

Abstract

Finding unequivocal evidence of dark matter interactions in a particle detector is a major objective of physics research. Liquid argon time projection chambers offer a path to probe Weakly Interacting Massive Particles scattering cross sections on nucleus down to the so-called neutrino floor, in a mass range from few GeV's to hundredths of TeV's. Based on the successful operation of the DarkSide-50 detector at LNGS, a new and more sensitive experiment, DarkSide-20k, has been designed and is now under construction. A thorough understanding of the DarkSide-50 detector response and, therefore, of all kind of observed events, is essential for an optimal design of the new experiment. In this paper, we report on a particular set of events, which were not used for dark matter searches. Namely, standard two-pulse scintillation-ionization signals accompanied by a small amplitude third pulse, originating from single or few electrons, in a time window of less than a maximum drift time. We compare our findings to those of a recent paper of the LUX Collaboration (D.S.Akerib et al. Phys.Rev.D 102, 092004). Indeed, both experiments observe events related to photoionization of the cathode. From the measured rate of these events, we estimate for the first time the quantum efficiency of the tetraphenyl butadiene deposited on the DarkSide-50 cathode at wavelengths around 128 nm, in liquid argon. Also, both experiments observe events likely related to photoionization of impurities in the liquid. The probability of photoelectron emission per unit length turns out to be one order of magnitude smaller in DarkSide-50 than in LUX. This result, together with the much larger measured electron lifetime, coherently hints toward a lower concentration of contaminants in DarkSide-50 than in LUX., 10 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Microbiomes are vast communities of microorganisms and viruses that populate all natural ecosystems. Viruses have been considered to be the most variable component of microbiomes, as supported by virome surveys and examples of high genomic mosaicism. However, recent evidence suggests that the human gut virome is remarkably stable compared with that of other environments. Here, we investigate the origin, evolution and epidemiology of crAssphage, a widespread human gut virus. Through a global collaboration, we obtained DNA sequences of crAssphage from more than one-third of the world's countries and showed that the phylogeography of crAssphage is locally clustered within countries, cities and individuals. We also found fully colinear crAssphage-like genomes in both Old-World and New-World primates, suggesting that the association of crAssphage with primates may be millions of years old. Finally, by exploiting a large cohort of more than 1,000 individuals, we tested whether crAssphage is associated with bacterial taxonomic groups of the gut microbiome, diverse human health parameters and a wide range of dietary factors. We identified strong correlations with different clades of bacteria that are related to Bacteroidetes and weak associations with several diet categories, but no significant association with health or disease. Abstract

The neutron capture reaction $$^{10}$$ B(n, $$\alpha $$ ) $$^{7}$$ Li has been investigated via the Trojan Horse Method from 0 to 1 MeV. The $$\alpha _{0}$$ and $$\alpha _{1}$$ channels, corresponding to $$^{7}$$ Li in its g.s. and 1st excited level respectively, have been analyzed and cross sections have been measured for the two reaction channels. Angular distributions for the $$^{11}$$ B energy levels in the explored range have been extracted and compared with literature, while the J $$^{\pi }$$ of the level at $$E_{11B}=11.450$$ MeV (4 keV before the $$\alpha $$ emission threshold) has been clearly determined for the first time.

Abstract

FISH and Hi-C methods are largely used to investigate the three-dimensional organization of the genome in the cell nucleus, and are applied here to study the organization of genes (LMBR1, NOM1, MNX1, UBE3C, PTPRN2) localized in the human 7q36.3 band. This region contains the MNX1 gene, which is normally not expressed in human lymphocytes beyond embryonic development. However, this homeobox gene is frequently activated in leukemic cells and its expression is associated with an altered gene positioning in the leukemia cell nuclei. In this study, we used FISH on 3D-preserved nuclei to investigate the nuclear positioning of MNX1 in the leukemia-derived cell line K562. Of the five copies of the MNX1 gene present n K562, four alleles were positioned in the nuclear periphery and only one in the nuclear interior. Using the Juicebox’s Hi-C dataset, we identified five chromatin loops in the 7q36.3 band, with different extensions related to the size and orientation of the genes located here, and independent from their expression levels. We identified similar loops in 11 human and 3 mouse cell lines, showing that these loops are highly conserved in different human cell lines and during evolution. Moreover, the chromatin loop organization is well conserved also during neuronal cell differentiation, showing consistency in genomic organization of this region in development. In this report, we show that FISH and Hi-C are two different approaches that complement one another and together give complete information on the nuclear organization of specific chromosomal regions in different conditions, including cellular differentiation and genetic diseases. Abstract

For the first time in an application to nuclear astrophysics, a process induced by the unstable $$^5$$ He = ( $$^4$$ He-n) nucleus, the $$^3$$ He+ $$^5$$ He $$\rightarrow $$ 2 $$\alpha $$ reaction, has been studied through the Trojan Horse Method (THM). For that purpose, the quasi-free (QF) contribution of the $$^9$$ Be( $$^3$$ He, $$\alpha \alpha $$ ) $$^4$$ He reaction was selected at $$E_{^{3}\text{ He }}=4$$ MeV incident energy. The reaction was studied in a kinematically complete experiment following a recent publication (Spitaleri et al. in Eur Phys J A 56:18, 2020), where for the quasi free contribution the momentum distribution between $$\alpha $$ and $$^5$$ He particle cluster in the $$^9$$ Be nucleus in the ground state have been extracted. The angular distribution of the QF $$^3$$ He+ $$^5$$ He $$\rightarrow $$ 2 $$\alpha $$ reaction was measured at $$\theta _{cm}$$ = 78 $$^{\circ }$$ –115 $$^{\circ }$$ . The energy dependence of the differential cross section of the $$^3$$ He+ $$^5$$ He $$ \rightarrow $$ 2 $$\alpha $$ virtual reaction was extracted in the energy range $$E_{cm}$$ = 0–650 keV. The total cross section obtained from the Trojan-horse method was normalized to absolute cross sections from a theoretical calculation in the energy range $$E_{cm}$$ =300–620 keV.

Abstract

Wastewater is a rich source of microbial life and contains bacteria, viruses, and other microbes found in human waste as well as environmental runoff sources. As part of an effort to characterize the New York City wastewater metagenome, we profiled the viral community of sewage samples across all five boroughs of NYC and found that local sampling sites have unique sets of viruses. We focused on bacteriophages, or viruses of bacteria, to understand how they may influence the microbial ecology of this system. We identified several new clusters of phages and successfully associated them with bacterial hosts, providing insight into virus-host interactions in urban wastewater. This study provides a first look into the viral communities present across the wastewater system in NYC and points to their functional importance in this environment., Bacteriophages are abundant members of all microbiomes studied to date, influencing microbial communities through interactions with their bacterial hosts. Despite their functional importance and ubiquity, phages have been underexplored in urban environments compared to their bacterial counterparts. We profiled the viral communities in New York City (NYC) wastewater using metagenomic data collected in November 2014 from 14 wastewater treatment plants. We show that phages accounted for the largest viral component of the sewage samples and that specific virus communities were associated with local environmental conditions within boroughs. The vast majority of the virus sequences had no homology matches in public databases, forming an average of 1,700 unique virus clusters (putative genera). These new clusters contribute to elucidating the overwhelming proportion of data that frequently goes unidentified in viral metagenomic studies. We assigned potential hosts to these phages, which appear to infect a wide range of bacterial genera, often outside their presumed host. We determined that infection networks form a modular-nested pattern, indicating that phages include a range of host specificities, from generalists to specialists, with most interactions organized into distinct groups. We identified genes in viral contigs involved in carbon and sulfur cycling, suggesting functional importance of viruses in circulating pathways and gene functions in the wastewater environment. In addition, we identified virophage genes as well as a nearly complete novel virophage genome. These findings provide an understanding of phage abundance and diversity in NYC wastewater, previously uncharacterized, and further examine geographic patterns of phage-host association in urban environments. Abstract

A new study of the quasi-free contribution to the $$^3\hbox {He}+\,^9\hbox {Be}\rightarrow 3\alpha $$ reaction (Q value = 19.004 MeV) at low $${E}_{^3{{\mathrm{He}}}}$$ energy is presented. The reaction was studied in a kinematically complete experiment at beam energy of 4 MeV. To clarify the presence of the quasi-free mechanism, the $$^4{\hbox {He}}$$–$$^5\hbox {He}$$ momentum distribution of the $$^9\hbox {Be}$$ ground state was extracted. Standard tests were also carried out to confirm the presence of the quasi-free contribution and are reported in this work. The full width at half maximum of the $$^4\hbox {He}$$–$$^5\hbox {He}$$ inter-cluster momentum distribution inside $$^9\hbox {Be}$$ was measured with improved accuracy, by adopting several different approaches that all led to consistent results. These preliminary investigations on the reaction mechanism are fundamental for future studies employing the Trojan Horse Method, with the $$^5\hbox {He}$$ unbound nucleus as a virtual projectile.

Abstract

We reanalize data collected with the DarkSide-50 experiment and recently used to set limits on the spin-independent interaction rate of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) on argon nuclei with an effective field theory framework. The dataset corresponds to a total (16660 $\pm$ 270) kg d exposure using a target of low-radioactivity argon extracted from underground sources. We obtain upper limits on the effective couplings of the 12 leading operators in the nonrelativistic systematic expansion. For each effective coupling we set constraints on WIMP-nucleon cross sections, setting upper limits between $2.4 \times 10^{-45} \, \mathrm{cm}^2$ and $2.3 \times 10^{-42} \, \mathrm{cm}^2$ (8.9 $\times 10^{-45} \, \mathrm{cm}^2$ and 6.0 $\times 10^{-42} \, \mathrm{cm}^2$) for WIMPs of mass of 100 $\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ (1000 $\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$) at 90\% confidence level., Accepted by PRD

Abstract

Neutron induced reactions are fundamental for the nucleosynthesis of elements in the universe. Indeed, to correctly study the reactions involved in the well-known s-process in stars, which produce about half of the elements beyond the iron peak, it is mandatory to know the neutron abundance available in those stars. The 17O(n, a)14C reaction is one of the so-called “neutron poisons” for the pro- cess and it could play an important role in the balance of the neutron abundance. The reaction is therefore investigated in the energy range of astrophysical inter- est between 0 and 350 keV in the center of mass by applying the Trojan Horse Method to the three body reaction 2H(17O, a14C)H.

Abstract

Large liquid argon detectors offer one of the best avenues for the detection of galactic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their scattering on atomic nuclei. The liquid argon target allows exquisite discrimination between nuclear and electron recoil signals via pulse-shape discrimination of the scintillation signals. Atmospheric argon (AAr), however, has a naturally occurring radioactive isotope, $^{39}$Ar, a $\beta$ emitter of cosmogenic origin. For large detectors, the atmospheric $^{39}$Ar activity poses pile-up concerns. The use of argon extracted from underground wells, deprived of $^{39}$Ar, is key to the physics potential of these experiments. The DarkSide-20k dark matter search experiment will operate a dual-phase time projection chamber with 50 tonnes of radio-pure underground argon (UAr), that was shown to be depleted of $^{39}$Ar with respect to AAr by a factor larger than 1400. Assessing the $^{39}$Ar content of the UAr during extraction is crucial for the success of DarkSide-20k, as well as for future experiments of the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC). This will be carried out by the DArT in ArDM experiment, a small chamber made with extremely radio-pure materials that will be placed at the centre of the ArDM detector, in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. The ArDM LAr volume acts as an active veto for background radioactivity, mostly $\gamma$-rays from the ArDM detector materials and the surrounding rock. The use of the Trojan Horse Method (THM) appears as one of the most suitable tools for investigating nuclear processes of interest for astrophysics. THM has been demonstrated to be useful for exploring different nuclear reactions intervening both in stellar and primordial nucleosynthesis as well. Some recent results will be here discussed together with a brief discussion of the fundamental theoretical description. General details about the recently studied 7Be(n,α)4He reaction will be given.

Abstract

The spectroscopy of F is of interest for nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure. In these proceedings we will focus on the astrophysical implications and on the perspectives of the use of elastic scattering for the investigation of reactions of astrophysical importance. In astrophysics, fluorine and the reactions producing and destroying it play a key role in constraining models of stars in different evolutionary stages, such as the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, responsible of the production of about half of the elements heavier than Fe. Indeed, s-nuclei are produced and brought to the surface thanks to mixing phenomena, together with fluorine that is produced in the same region from the same neutron source. Since the last stage in fluorine nucleosynthesis is the N(α, γ) F radiative capture, the study of the N + α elastic scattering may cast light on the fluorine synthesis. Also, F states are responsible of the appearance of resonances in the O(p,α) N reaction, leading to the production of N, later burnt to F in AGB stars through α-captures. Finally, the F spectroscopy may help constraining nuclear properties of the radioactive mirror nucleus Ne, whose states play a key role in novae modeling through the F(p,α) O reaction. In this work, the N - α elastic scattering is studied using the thick target inverse kinematics approach, allowing us to span a very large fluorine excitation energy range (∼ 6 - 10 MeV). A R-matrix analysis of the measured differential cross sections was also carried out, making it possible to determine the spin-parity and widths of a number of F states, including some previously not reported in the literature.

Abstract

We discuss experimentally and theoretically neutron production from the laser driven explosion of gas clusters prepared near the liquid-gas critical point. We let deuterated methane that was prepared very close to its critical temperature and pressure expand through a conical nozzle to create clusters, and then irradiated those clusters with a high intensity pulse from the Texas Petawatt Laser. After ionization, the clusters explode producing energetic ions, some of which fuse with resultant neutron emission. We show that the critical fluctuations present in the nozzle before the expansion influence the dynamics of neutron production. Neutron production near the critical point follows a power law, which is a signature of a second order phase transition and it is consistent with the Fisher model. This result might be relevant for energy production from fusion reactions.

Abstract

Studies on nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, and other interests have been performed using the radioactive-isotope (RI) beams at the low-energy RI beam separator CRIB, operated by Center for Nuclear Study (CNS), the University of Tokyo. The elastic resonant scattering is a striking tool to study astrophysical reactions and nuclear clusters. In particular, when it is coupled with a thick target and inverse kinematics, the measurement can be very efficient and even feasible with RI beams. By measuring resonant scattering, we can study the properties of resonant states which could play an important role in the astrophysical reaction, or have an exotic nuclear structure. The 10Be+α elastic scattering has been measured at CRIB, and three resonances which are in agreement with the prediction of a linear-chain structure by Suhara-En’yo were observed, giving a strong indication of the existence of such an exotic structure. Measurements based on the indirect technique of the reaction measurement, such as the Trojan horse method, have also been performed at CRIB.

Abstract

The paper presents the first results of the ongoing INTER-Health pilot coming out from the application of the strategy proposed and developed within the framework of the INTER-IoT (Horizon 2020) European project. The novel IoT-based healthcare platform, supporting decentralized and mobile monitoring of assisted livings in highly heterogeneous contexts, has been obtained by integrating other existing heterogeneous, non-interoperable IoT platforms following the INTER-IoT approach to provide value added assisted living mobile healthcare services (respect to the standard "manual" monitoring performed by conventional healthcare centers) in terms of faster detection and correction of wrong lifestyles or high risk critical situations. All the interoperability aspects and technological choices have been presented to discuss the ease of such integration process, also making easier and faster the interaction between doctor and patient drastically reducing the dropout rate of people leaving the pilot.

Abstract

In AGB environment, Fluorine and Sodium production and destruction pathways are still not completely understood: their abundances are therefore still matter of debate. \(^{19}\mathrm {F}\) (only stable isotope of fluorine) abundance is strongly related to standard and extra-mixing processestype typical of the interior AGB-stars. Furthermore, the destruction channels for this element are far from being well understood. About \(^{23}\)Na, its presence in Globular Clusters along with the well-known anticorrelation with oxygen, underline that this element has been produced in previous generations of stars: in particular, intermediate-mass AGB stars are one of the possible candidates for its production. For this reason we studied the \(^{19}\mathrm {F}\)(\(\alpha \),p)\(^{22}\mathrm {Ne}\) and \(^{23}\mathrm{Na}(\mathrm{p},\alpha )^{20}\)Ne reactions in the energy range of relevance for astrophysics via the Trojan Horse Method (THM), using the three-body reactions \(^{6}\mathrm {Li}\)(\(^{19}\mathrm {F}\), p\(^{22}\mathrm {Ne}\))d and \(^{23}\mathrm {Na}\) (d, pn)\(^{20}\mathrm {Ne}\).

Abstract

Owing the presence of the Coulomb barrier at astrophysically relevant kinetic energies, it is very difficult, or sometimes impossible to measure astrophysical reaction rates in laboratory. To overcome the problems related to the use of extrapolation procedure, the Trojan Horse Method (THM) has been applied extensively for the last 25 years to measure nuclear reaction cross sections of astrophysical interest. Although it has been mainly applied for charged particle-induced reactions, recently the THM has been found to have also a relevant role for neutron-induced ones. Here, the basic principle and a review of the main application of the Trojan Horse Method are presented, following a step-by-step description of the results concerning the study of the 17O(n,α)14C reaction.

Abstract

Studying interactions of radioactive ions with neutrons is particularly demanding and has been performed only in a few cases. Some of these interactions are crucial in several astrophysical contexts. In the present work, the case of the 7Be destruction induced by the (n, α) reaction is investigated at the energies typical of the primordial nucleosynthesis by means of the Trojan Horse Method applied to the 2H(7Be, αα)p quasi-free reaction. The 7Be(n, α)4He cross-section has been measured in a single experiment from ∼2 MeV down to cosmological energies. Abstract

We examine the sensitivity of a large scale two-phase liquid argon detector to the directionality of the dark matter signal. This study was performed under the assumption that, above 50 keV of recoil energy, one can determine (with some resolution) the direction of the recoil nucleus without head-tail discrimination, as suggested by past studies that proposed to exploit the dependence of columnar recombination on the angle between the recoil nucleus direction and the electric field. In this paper we study the differential interaction recoil rate as a function of the recoil direction angle with respect to the zenith for a detector located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso and we determine its diurnal and seasonal modulation. Using a likelihood-ratio based approach we show that, with the angular information alone, 100 events are enough to reject the isotropic hypothesis at three standard deviation level. For an exposure of 100 tonne years this would correspond to a spin independent WIMP-nucleon cross section of about 10^-46 cm^2 at 200 GeV WIMP mass. The results presented in this paper provide strong motivation for the experimental determination of directional recoil effects in two-phase liquid argon detectors., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures. Abstract

The Trojan Horse Method has been applied to many neutron-induced reactions using the deuteron as a virtual source of neutrons, to explore wide energy regions of interest for astrophysics and applied physics and to investigate the suppression of the centrifugal barrier, that is one of the key advantages of this Method. The neutron-induced experimental campaign has already concerned 17O(n, α)14C, 6Li(n,α)3H, 7Be(n,p)7Li, 7Be(n,α)4He, 18F(n,α)15O and 14N(n,p)14C, and very recently 25Mg(n,α)22Ne and 27Al(n,p)27Mg, while others are planned to be measured soon, thus influencing different astrophysical scenarios. Particular attention is dedicated to a new measurement regarding the 10B(n,α)7Li reaction, aimed to disentangle the 7Li ground state contribution from its first excited state to the cross section.

Abstract

An experiment was performed by means of Trojan Horse Method (THM) at the LNS Tandem in Catania. The investigation of the relevant 19F(p,α)16O two-body reaction was performed by selecting the quasi free (QF) contribution of the 19F(2H,α16O)n three-body reaction, using the deuteron target as TH nucleus. The aim of this measurement is to obtain the 19F(p,α)16O cross section. The experimental set-up and the calibration of the detectors will be presented.

Abstract

The \(^{12}\)C(\(^{12}\)C,\(\alpha _{0,1}\))\(^{20}\)Ne and \(^{12}\)C(\(^{12}\)C,\(p_{0,1}\))\(^{23}\)Na reactions, which determine carbon burning in stars, have been measured from E\(_{c.m.}\) = 2.7 MeV down to 0.8 MeV via the Trojan Horse Method off the deuteron in \(^{14}\)N. This range of energies is relevant for several astrophysical scenarios, from superburst ignition to hydrostatic burning. The measured astrophysical S(E) factors reveal several resonances, which are responsible for a very large increase of the reaction rate at the relevant temperatures.

Abstract

The project has evaluated the effectiveness of interventions for nutritional counseling through the use of techniques of motivational counseling, aimed at increasing motivation to change unhealthy lifestyles. The study was carried out almost experimentally with three nutritional outpatients, that enrolled subjects to be submitted to nutritional counseling using techniques of motivational counseling representing the "experimental group" and one outpatient which recruited subjects submitted only to traditional Nutritional Counseling representing the "control group". The trial, conducted between September 2009 to December 2011, was structured in 5 stages: Visit, First Control, Second, Third and Fourth Control. Aspects investigated were: 1) Willingness to change, 2) Motivational factors, 3) Body Mass Index and 4) Lifestyles and physical activity. The work of NO was considered effective if it had obtained following results: not gaining weight for normal weight people, a reduction of at least 5% for overweight in the period that went from the first visit to the fourth control. This definition allowed us to distinguish outcomes in "Success" and "Failures". For the four motivational factors analyzed in the "Pilot" and "Controls", it was found that the Inner Fracture and the Temptation decreased, while the Self-efficacy and Importance increased. The increase of scores recorded in the evaluation of the Availability to change has increased the effectiveness of treatment. From the analysis of results for the Willingness to change and the four motivational factors, it was observed that the increase of average scores recorded also an increase of the effectiveness of the treatment.

Abstract

The 10B(p,$\alpha_{1}$)7Be reaction has been studied for the first time via the Trojan Horse Method (THM) applied to the 2H(10B,$\alpha$7Be)n quasi-free three-body process. The present experiment allowed for a clear separation between $ \alpha_{0}$ and $\alpha_{1}$ channels thanks to the improved energy resolution with respect to previous THM studies of the 2H(10B,$\alpha$7Be)n reaction. The extracted half-off-energy-shell cross section was found to be characterized by several structures attributable to the population of 11C. In particular, six resonances have been observed at 10.086, 10.352, 10.525, 10.686, 10.841 and 10.976 MeV 11C excitation energy.

Abstract

Bioengineered soft tissues on any meaningful scale or complexity must incorporate aspects of the functional tissue, namely a vasculature, providing cells oxygen and nutrients critical for their survival. However, the ability of tissue engineering strategies to promote a fast revascularization is critically limited. Particularly in endodontic regenerative therapies, the complicated anatomy of the root canal system, and the narrow apical access limit the supply of new blood vessels and pulp tissue ingrowth. Here we characterize the viscoelastic and microstructural properties of a class of injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels formed in situ, reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and enriched with platelet lysate (PL), and test its ability to promote cells recruitment and proangiogenic activity in vitro. The incorporation of CNCs enhanced the stability of the materials against hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation. Moreover, the release of the chemotactic and pro-angiogenic growth factors (GFs) (PDGF and VEGF) from the PL-laden hydrogels showed an improved sustained profile proportional to the amount of incorporated CNCs. The PL-laden hydrogels exhibited preferential supportive properties of encapsulated human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) in in vitro culture conditions. Finally, PL-laden hydrogels stimulated chemotactic and pro-angiogenic activity by promoting hDPCs recruitment and cell sprouting in hDPCs/human umbilical vein endothelial cell co-cultures in vitro, and in an ex vivo model.
