Abstract

Frustration-induced dimensional reduction is manifested in lower dimensionality of magnetic correlations compared to that of the magnetic structure. Here the authors demonstrate the role of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the recently synthesized material Ca3ReO5Cl2 exhibiting dimensional reduction.

2. Single-particle Raman spectroscopy for studying physical and chemical processes of atmospheric particles

Abstract

Atmospheric particles experience various physical and chemical processes and change their properties during their lifetime. Most studies on atmospheric particles, both in laboratory and field measurements, rely on analyzing an ensemble of particles. Because of different mixing states of individual particles, only average properties can be obtained from studies using ensembles of particles. To better understand the fate and environmental impacts of atmospheric particles, investigations on their properties and processes at a single-particle level are valuable. Among a wealth of analytic techniques, single-particle Raman spectroscopy provides an unambiguous characterization of individual particles under atmospheric pressure in a non-destructive and in situ manner. This paper comprehensively reviews the application of such a technique in the studies of atmospheric particles, including particle hygroscopicity, phase transition and separation, and solute–water interactions, particle pH, and multiphase reactions. Investigations on enhanced Raman spectroscopy and bioaerosols on a single-particle basis are also reviewed. For each application, we describe the principle and representative examples of studies. Finally, we present our views on future directions on both technique development and further applications of single-particle Raman spectroscopy in studying atmospheric particles.

Abstract

Frustrated magnets with a strong spin-lattice coupling can show rich magnetic phases and the associated fascinating phenomena. A promising platform is the breathing pyrochlore magnet CuInCr_{4}S_{8} with localized S=3/2Cr^{3+} ions, which is proposed to be effectively viewed as an S=6 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the face-centered-cubic lattice. Here we unveil that CuInCr_{4}S_{8} exhibits a complex magnetic phase diagram with a small phase pocket (A phase) by means of magnetization, magnetostriction, magnetocapacitance, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements in pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 60 T. Remarkably, the appearance of A phase is accompanied by anomalous magnetostrictive and magnetocapacitive responses, suggesting the emergence of helimagnetism in contrast to the neighboring commensurate magnetic phases. Besides, the high-entropy nature is confirmed in the high-temperature side of A phase. These features are potentially related to a thermal fluctuation-driven multiple-q state caused by the magnetic frustration, which has been theoretically predicted but yet experimentally undiscovered in insulating magnets.

4. Electrospray surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (ES-SERS) for probing surface chemical compositions of atmospherically relevant particles

Abstract

We present electrospray surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (ES-SERS) as a new approach to measuring the surface chemical compositions of atmospherically relevant particles. The surface-sensitive SERS is realized by electrospraying Ag nanoparticle aerosols over analyte particles. Spectral features at v(SO42−), v(C–H) and v(O–H) modes were observed from the normal Raman and SERS measurements of laboratory-generated supermicron particles of ammonium sulfate (AS), AS mixed with succinic acid (AS ∕ SA) and AS mixed with sucrose (AS ∕ sucrose). SERS measurements showed strong interaction (or chemisorption) between Ag nanoparticles and surface aqueous sulfate [SO42−] with [SO42−]AS ∕ sucrose > [SO42−]AS ∕ SA > [SO42−]AS. Enhanced spectra of the solid AS and AS ∕ SA particles revealed the formation of surface-adsorbed water on their surfaces at 60 % relative humidity. These observations of surface aqueous sulfate and adsorbed water demonstrate a possible role of surface-adsorbed water in facilitating the dissolution of sulfate from the bulk phase into its water layer(s). Submicron ambient aerosol particles collected in Hong Kong exhibited non-enhanced features of black carbon and enhanced features of sulfate and organic matter (carbonyl group), indicating an enrichment of sulfate and organic matter on the particle surface.

Abstract

We report on the magnetocaloric effect and ultrasound studies of the frustrated quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 compound LiCuVO_{4}, evidencing a spin-nematic state. The magnetic Grüneisen parameter diverges at the transition to the spin-nematic phase, μ_{0}H_{c3}≈40 T, showing quantum criticality accompanied by entropy accumulation. The observed high-field anomalies in the acoustic properties clearly evidence a strong involvement of the lattice in the spin dynamics. The theoretical approach, based on exchange-striction coupling with dipolar and quadrupolar contributions, suggests that the spin-dipole-strain and quadrupole-strain interactions govern the spin-nematicity in LiCuVO_{4}.

Abstract

The observation of spinon excitations in the $$S=\frac{1}{2}$$ S = 1 2 triangular antiferromagnet Ca3ReO5Cl2 reveals a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) nature of magnetic correlations, in spite of the nominally 2D magnetic structure. This phenomenon is known as frustration-induced dimensional reduction. Here, we present high-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy and magnetization studies of Ca3ReO5Cl2, allowing us not only to refine spin-Hamiltonian parameters, but also to investigate peculiarities of its low-energy spin dynamics. We argue that the presence of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) shifts the spinon continuum in momentum space and, as a result, opens a zero-field gap at the Γ point. We observed this gap directly. The shift is found to be consistent with the structural modulation in the ordered state, suggesting this material as a perfect model triangular-lattice system, where a pure DMI-spiral ground state can be realized.

7. Improved records of glacier flow instabilities using customized NASA autoRIFT (CautoRIFT) applied to PlanetScope imagery

Abstract

En masse application of feature tracking algorithms to satellite image pairs has produced records of glacier surface velocities with global coverage, revolutionizing the understanding of global glacier change. However, glacier velocity records are sometimes incomplete due to gaps in the cloud-free satellite image record (for optical images) and failure of standard feature tracking parameters, e.g., search range, chip size, or estimated displacement, to capture rapid changes in glacier velocity. Here, we present a pipeline for pre-processing commercial high-resolution daily PlanetScope surface reflectance images and for generating georeferenced glacier velocity maps using NASA's autonomous Repeat Image Feature Tracking (autoRIFT) algorithm with customized parameters. We compare our velocity time series to the NASA Inter-Mission Time Series of Land Ice Velocity and Elevation (ITS_LIVE) global glacier velocity dataset, which is produced using autoRIFT, with regional-scale feature tracking parameters. Using five surge-type glaciers as test sites, we demonstrate that the use of customized feature tracking parameters for each glacier improves upon the velocity record provided by ITS_LIVE during periods of rapid glacier acceleration (i.e., changes greater than several meters per day over 2–3 months). We show that ITS_LIVE can fail to capture velocities during glacier surges but that both the use of custom autoRIFT parameters and the inclusion of PlanetScope imagery can capture the progression of order-of-magnitude changes in flow speed with median uncertainties of m d−1. Additionally, the PlanetScope image record approximately doubles the amount of optical cloud-free imagery available for each glacier and the number of velocity maps produced outside of the months affected by darkness (i.e., polar night), augmenting the ITS_LIVE record. We demonstrate that these pipelines provide additional insights into speedup behavior for the test glaciers and recommend that they are used for studies that aim to capture glacier velocity change at sub-monthly timescales and with greater spatial detail.

Abstract

The polar magnet CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$ is known to exhibit the largest magnetic-field-driven electric polarization change ($\Delta P$) associated with an antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferrimagnetic (FIM) transition in a narrow temperature range between 62 and 69 K. In this work, we investigate the effect of Ni doping on its multiferroic properties, by means of magnetization, electric polarization, dielectric constant, and magnetostriction measurements on single crystals of CaBaCo$_{3.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$O$_{7}$ up to 50 T. In the doped material, two kinds of AFM phases appear below 78 K, accompanying negative $\Delta P$. Upon the application of a magnetic field along any crystallographic axis, giant positive $\Delta P$ of up to $11 \sim 12$ mC/m$^{2}$ is observed along with an AFM-FIM transition in the whole temperature range below 78 K. The giant magnetoelectric effect inherent in CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$ can be further enhanced just by a small amount of chemical substitution, in terms of (i) increasing the magnitude of $\Delta P$ and (ii) expanding the temperature range in which giant $\Delta P$ appears., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, SM: 3 pages, 3 figures

10. Physical properties of liquid oxygen under ultrahigh magnetic fields

Abstract

We studied the acoustic properties of liquid oxygen up to 90 T by means of ultrasound measurements. We observed a monotonic decrease of the sound velocity and an asymptotic increase of the sound attenuation when applying magnetic fields. The unusual attenuation, twenty times as large as the zero-field value, suggests strong fluctuations of the local molecular arrangement. We point out that the observed fluctuations are related to a liquid-liquid transition or crossover, from a small-magnetization to a large-magnetization liquid, which is characterized by a local-structure rearrangement. To investigate higher-field properties of liquid oxygen, we performed single-turn-coil experiments up to 180 T by means of the acoustic, dilatometric, magnetic, and optical techniques. 11. Impact of the storm Alex on water exchanges between the Roya River and its alluvial aquifer

Abstract

The alluvial aquifer of the transnational Roya River watershed is an important water resource for drinking water supply. Through successive European projects, a monitoring network has been implemented over the alluvial plain to improve the understanding of the functioning of this aquifer. For instance, studies highlighted the predominant role of surface water in the recharge of the aquifer. Following the storm Alex and the resulting exceptional flood event in the Roya valley in October 2020, a general decrease of the piezometric levels was observed in the alluvial aquifer. Changes in the river morphology and in the granulometry of the hyporheic zone have impacted surface water – groundwater exchanges and reduced the aquifer recharge.

12. The effect of worker clothing color on stress in laying hens

Abstract

The environment in which animals are kept must provide suitable conditions for their species. This includes ensuring that animals are healthy, well-fed, safe, able to exhibit species-specific behaviors, not experiencing fear or pain, and not under chronic or acute stress. Poultry welfare is achieved when birds are raised in environments that meet their physiological and ethological needs. Fear can significantly impact animal welfare. Chickens have been significantly altered by human artificial selection. Despite this, they exhibit reactivity towards humans and tend to avoid them. Poultry animals reared in environmentally controlled poultry houses and bred for superior productivity are more sensitive to fear factors and have lost their adaptability to a great extent. This study aimed to determine the effect of personnel clothing color on stress and fear in chickens in layer hen coops. The experiment involved 32-week-old laying hens of three different genotypes. A worker in the henhouse wore six respective different colors of workwear (dark blue, green, red, yellow, black, and white), and sound measurements were taken during this time. The results showed that the color of the worker's clothing influenced the sound intensity of the chickens (P<0.05). White clothing elicited the least reaction, whereas black and dark blue elicited the most. The other three colors showed similar reactions. In conclusion, workers in layer hen coops wearing dark clothing, such as dark blue and black, can induce stress and noise in the animals. Additionally, chickens showed similar reactions to green, red, and yellow colors, with white being the color around which they felt the most secure.

Abstract

Background: International guidelines recommend universal screening for Lynch syndrome (LS) through somatic DNA mismatch repair deficiency (dMMR) testing in all colorectal cancers (CRCs). However, LS remains largely underdiagnosed. Mainstreaming LS diagnosis through oncologist-driven genetic testing could increase detection rates, thus extending the benefits of precision prevention to patients with LS and their families. We aim to evaluate the feasibility of the mainstreaming diagnostic algorithm for LS. Patients and methods: ItaLynch is an ongoing, prospective, observational, multicenter, multidisciplinary, Italian study in patients with dMMR CRC. Being descriptive in nature, it does not attempt to test any specific, a priori, hypothesis. Patients with dMMR CRC are selected by universal screening by immunohistochemistry (IHC). In MLH1-deficient patients, reflex testing for BRAFV600E and, when appropriate, for MLH1 promoter hypermethylation is carried out. For all dMMR CRC, a ‘Lynch Alert’ is added to the pathology report: positive when a patient is at high risk for LS, due to reflex testing results or to loss of non-MLH1 proteins. Conversely, a ‘Lynch Alert’ is negative when the patient is likely to be a nonhereditary case (i.e. MLH1 loss and BRAFV600E or MLH1 promoter hypermethylation). In patients with a positive ‘Lynch Alert’, after providing a brief explanation about the risks and benefits of genetic testing, the oncologist asks patients for their consent to mainstream genetic testing. Thus a blood sample is drawn for constitutional variants of the MMR genes. Carriers of a germline variant are then referred to post-test genetic counseling. Referral to clinical genetic services is also advised for patients with clinical suspect criteria.

Abstract

Summary: Background: Although immunomodulators have established benefit against the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in general, it is uncertain whether such agents improve outcomes without increasing the risk of secondary infections in the specific subgroup of previously immunocompromised patients. We assessed the effect of immunomodulators on outcomes of immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Methods: The protocol was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022335397). MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and references of relevant articles were searched up to 01-06-2022. Authors of potentially eligible randomized controlled trials were contacted to provide data on immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control (i.e., placebo or standard-of-care). Findings: Eleven randomized controlled trials involving 397 immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were included. Ten trials had low risk of bias. There was no difference between immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control regarding mortality [30/182 (16.5%) vs 41/215 (19.1%); RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.61–1.41; p = 0.74], secondary infections (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.64–1.58; p = 0.99) and change in World Health Organization ordinal scale from baseline to day 15 (weighed mean difference 0.27, 95% CI -0.09–0.63; p = 0.15). In subgroup analyses including only patients with hematologic malignancy, only trials with low risk of bias, only trials administering IL-6 inhibitors, or only trials administering immunosuppressants, there was no difference between comparators regarding mortality. Interpretation: Immunomodulators, compared to control, were not associated with harmful or beneficial outcomes, including mortality, secondary infections, and change in ordinal scale, when administered to immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Abstract

Abstract Background Since the beginning of SARS-CoV2 pandemic, the mortality rate among elderly patients (60–90 years) has been around 50%, so age has been a determining factor of a worse COVID-19 prognosis. Associated with age, the thymic function involution and depletion plays an important role, that could be related to a dysregulated and ineffective innate and adaptive immune response against SARS-CoV2. Our study aims to further in vitro effect of human Thymosin-alpha-1 (α1Thy) treatment on the immune system in population groups with different thymic function levels in the scenario of SARS-CoV2 infection. Results Activation markers such as CD40, CD80 and TIM-3 were upregulated in α1Thy presence, especially in plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) and, with increased TNFα production was observed compared to untreated condition. Co-cultures of CD4 + and CD8 + T cells with DCs treated with α1Thy in response to SARS-CoV2 peptides showed a decrease in the cytokine production compared to the condition without α1Thy pre-treated. A decrease in CD40L activation co-receptor expression in CD8 + LTs was also observed, as well as an increase in PD1 in CD4 + TLs expression in both age groups. In fact, there are no age-related differences in the immunomodulatory effect of the hormone, and it seems that effector memory and terminally differentiated memory T lymphocyte subsets were the most actively influenced by the immunomodulatory α1Thy effect. Finally, the polyfunctionality measured in SARS-CoV2 Specific-T cells response was maintained in α1Thy presence in total and memory subpopulations CD4 + and CD8 + T-cells, despite decreased proinflammatory cytokines production. Conclusion The hormone α1Thy could reduce, through the modulation of DCs, the amount of proinflammatory cytokines produced by T cells. Moreover, α1Thy improve lymphocyte functionality and could become a beneficial therapeutic alternative as an adjuvant in SARS-CoV2 treatment either in the acute phase after infection or reinfection. In addition, the effect on the T immune response means that α1Thy can be incorporated into the vaccination regimen, especially in the most immunologically vulnerable individuals such as the elderly.
