Abstract: Abstract We report measurements of the e + e − → B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ , B B ¯ ∗ $$ B{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ , and B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross sections at four energies, 10653, 10701, 10746 and 10805 MeV, using data collected by the Belle II experiment. We reconstruct one B meson in a large number of hadronic final states and use its momentum to identify the production process. In the first 2 – 5 MeV above B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ threshold, the e + e − → B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross section increases rapidly. This may indicate the presence of a pole close to the threshold.

Abstract: Abstract We report a determination of the CKM angle ϕ 3, also known as γ, from a combination of measurements using samples of up to 711 fb −1 from the Belle experiment and up to 362 fb −1 from the Belle II experiment. We combine results from analyses of B + → DK +, B + → Dπ +, and B + → D * K + decays, where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ mesons, in a likelihood fit to obtain ϕ 3 = (75.2 ± 7.6) ° . We also briefly discuss the interpretation of this result.

Abstract: Abstract We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ − → μ − μ + μ − using a 424 fb −1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 −8 on the branching fraction of the τ − → μ − μ + μ − decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the ratio R μ = B τ − → μ − ν ¯ μ ν τ / B τ − → e − ν ¯ e ν τ $$ {R}_{\mu }=\mathcal{B}\left({\tau}^{-}\to {\mu}^{-}{\overline{\nu}}_{\mu }{\nu}_{\tau}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\tau}^{-}\to {e}^{-}{\overline{\nu}}_e{\nu}_{\tau}\right) $$ of branching fractions B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ of the τ lepton decaying to muons or electrons using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 ± 2 fb −1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood fit is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, R μ = 0.9675 ± 0.0007 ± 0.0036, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the W boson in τ decays of 0.9974 ± 0.0019, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.

Abstract: Abstract We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D (*)+ K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ , B − → D (*)0 K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 362 fb −1. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed B meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of m(K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ ) and m(D (*) K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ ) in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D + K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , B − → D* 0 K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , and B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D* + K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity J P = 1− for the K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ systems and J P = 1+ for the K − K* 0 systems. We also present measurements of the branching fractions of four B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D (*)+ D s − $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ , B − → D (*)0 D s − $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ decay channels with a precision compatible to the current world averages.

Abstract: Abstract We present an analysis of the process e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) (where n = 1, 2, or 3) reconstructed in 19.6 fb −1 of Belle II data during a special run of the SuperKEKB collider at four energy points near the peak of the Υ(10753) resonance. By analyzing the mass distribution of the π + π − Υ(nS) system and the Born cross sections of the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process, we report the first observation of Υ(10753) decays to the π + π − Υ(1S) and π + π − Υ(2S) final states, and find no evidence for decays to π + π − Υ(3S). Possible intermediate states in the π + π − Υ(1S, 2S) transitions are also investigated, and no evidence for decays proceeding via the π ∓ Z b ± $$ {\pi}^{\mp }{Z}_b^{\pm } $$ or f 0(980)Υ(nS) intermediate states is found. We measure Born cross sections for the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process that, combined with results from Belle, obtain the mass and width of Υ(10753) to be (10756.6 ± 2.7 ± 0.9) MeV/c 2 and (29.0 ± 8.8 ± 1.2) MeV, respectively. The relative ratios of the Born cross sections at the Υ(10753) resonance peak are also reported for the first time.

Abstract: Abstract We report results from a study of B ± → DK ± decays followed by D decaying to the CP-even final state K + K − and CP-odd final state K S 0 π 0 $$ {K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ , where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ states. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle ϕ 3. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of 198 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure the CP asymmetries to be A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ = (+12.5 ± 5.8 ± 1.4)% and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− = (−16.7 ± 5.7 ± 0.6)%, and the ratios of branching fractions to be R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP+ = 1.164 ± 0.081 ± 0.036 and R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP− = 1.151 ± 0.074 ± 0.019. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5 standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3% confidence intervals of (8.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 16.5 ° ) or (84.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 95.5 ° ) or (163.3 ° < ϕ 3 < 171.5 ° ) and 0.321 < r B < 0.465.

Abstract: Abstract We measure CP asymmetries and branching-fraction ratios for B ± → DK ± and Dπ ± decays with D → K S 0 $$ {K}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ K ± π ∓, where D is a superposition of D 0 and D ¯ $$ \overline{D} $$ 0. We use the full data set of the Belle experiment, containing 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs, and data from the Belle II experiment, containing 387 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs, both collected in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. Our results provide model-independent information on the unitarity triangle angle ϕ 3.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle ϕ 3 (also known as γ) using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B + → D ( K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ h + h − )h +, where D is either a D 0 or D ¯ $$ \overline{D} $$ 0 meson and h is either a π or K. This is the first measurement that simultaneously uses Belle and Belle II data, combining samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 711 fb −1 and 128 fb −1, respectively. All data were accumulated from energy-asymmetric e + e − collisions at a centre-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure ϕ 3 = (78.4 ± 11.4 ± 0.5 ± 1.0)°, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is from the uncertainties on external measurements of the D-decay strong-phase parameters.

Abstract: Magnetoelectric coupling in artificial multiferroic interfaces can be drastically affected by the switching of oxygen vacancies and by the inversion of the ferroelectric polarization. Disentangling both effects is of major importance toward exploiting these effects in practical spintronic or spinorbitronic devices. We report on the independent control of ferroelectric and oxygen vacancy switching in multiferroic tunnel junctions with a La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 bottom electrode, a BaTiO3 ferroelectric barrier, and a Ni top electrode. We show that the concurrence of interface oxidation and ferroelectric switching allows for the controlled inversion of the interface spin polarization. Moreover, we show the possibility of a spin-memristor where the controlled oxidation of the interface allows for a continuum of memresistance states in the tunneling magnetoresistance. These results signal interesting new avenues toward neuromorphic devices where, as in practical neurons, the electronic response is controlled by electrochemical degrees of freedom.

Abstract: Controlling magnetic anisotropy is an important objective towards engineering novel magnetic device concepts in oxide electronics. In thin film manganites, magnetic anisotropy is weak and it is primarily determined by the substrate, through induced structural distortions resulting from epitaxial mismatch strain. On the other hand, in cobaltites, with a stronger spin orbit interaction, magnetic anisotropy is typically much stronger. In this paper, we show that interfacing La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) with an ultrathin LaCoO3 (LCO) layer drastically modifies the magnetic anisotropy of the manganite, making it independent of the substrate and closer to the magnetic isotropy characterizing its rhombohedral structure. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements evidence a tendency of manganite magnetic moments to point out-of-plane suggesting non collinear magnetic interactions at the interface. These results may be of interest for the design of oxide interfaces with tailored magnetic structures for new oxide devices.

Abstract: Proximity effect between superconductors and ferromagnets may become long range due to the generation of triplet pairs. The recent finding of a long one micron-range unconventional Josephson effect between YBa2Cu3O7 High Tc cuprates separated by a half metallic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 manganite ferromagnet has uncovered a novel unconventional triplet proximity effect. In this paper we examine the temperature dependence of the critical current of planar Josephson junctions. We find that the critical current –normal resistance product follows the predictions of traditional superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions which implies that triplet pairs in a ferromagnet are transported in the diffusive limit similarly to singlet pairs in a normal metal. This result calls for theoretical studies of the new triplet Josephson effect and underlines its potential in future superconducting spintronics.

Abstract: An absolute measurement of the Λ_{c}^{+} lifetime is reported using Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+} decays in events reconstructed from data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The total integrated luminosity of the data sample, which was collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the ϒ(4S) resonance, is 207.2 fb^{-1}. The result, τ(Λ_{c}^{+})=203.20±0.89±0.77 fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is the most precise measurement to date and is consistent with previous determinations.

Abstract: A search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] is performed at the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 63 fb^{-1} collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance and a sample of 9 fb^{-1} collected at an energy 60 MeV below the resonance. Because the measurable decay signature involves only a single charged kaon, a novel measurement approach is used that exploits not only the properties of the B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] decay, but also the inclusive properties of the other B meson in the ϒ(4S)→BB[over ¯] event, to suppress the background from other B meson decays and light-quark pair production. This inclusive tagging approach offers a higher signal efficiency compared to previous searches. No significant signal is observed. An upper limit on the branching fraction of B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] of 4.1×10^{-5} is set at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Dietary supplements, based on essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, help in normalizing the circulating lipids in overweight people. These fatty acids are abundant in fish oils and certain vegetable seed oils. In this context, the fatty acid profile of 9 commercial flaxseed trademarks was analyzed. Regarding fatty acid composition, α-linolenic acid represented more than 60% of the total fatty acids. In addition, sample 3 displayed the highest oxidative stability; thus, it was selected to be used in a pilot nutritional intervention study. The objective was to assess the hypolipidemic effects of flaxseed together with an isocaloric fish-rich diet. Two groups of women aged 25-70 years presenting high levels of circulating cholesterol (> 200 mg dL-1) and triglycerides (>150 mg dL-1) participated. Group F consumed flaxseed, while group D did not. At the end of intervention, participants from group F presented significantly reduced total cholesterol and lower systolic and diastolic pressure as compared to group D. Triacylglycerols decreased in both groups with respect to initial values, suggesting a role of diet. The flaxseed trademark is an influencing variable in its fatty acid composition and flaxseed supplementation combined with a fish-rich diet can help to reduce blood lipid parameters.

Abstract: Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z′. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z′ in the process e+e-→μ+μ-Z′ and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z′ in e+e-→e±μZ′. We do not find any excess of events and set 90% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an Lμ-Lτ theory, into upper limits on the Z′ coupling constant at the level of 5×10-2-1 for MZ′≤6 GeV/c2.

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed and leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Mitogen-activated protein kinase-interacting kinases (MNKs) promote the expression of several oncogenic proteins and are overexpressed in several types of cancer. In human cells, there are four isoforms of MNKs. The truncated isoform MNK1b, first described in our laboratory, has a higher basal activity and is constitutively active. Aptamers are emerging in recent years as potential therapeutic agents that show significant advantages over drugs of other nature. We have previously obtained and characterized a highly specific aptamer against MNK1b, named apMNK2F, with a dissociation constant in the nanomolar range, which produces significant inhibition of proliferation, migration, and colony formation in breast cancer cells. Furthermore, its sequence analysis predicted two G-quadruplex structures. In this work, we show the optimization process of the aptamer to reduce its size, improving its stability. The obtained aptamer, named apMNKQ2, is able to inhibit proliferation, colony formation, migration, and invasion in breast cancer cells. In murine models of breast cancer, apMNKQ2 has demonstrated its efficacy in reducing tumor volume and the number of metastases. In conclusion, apMNKQ2 could be used as an anti-tumor drug in the future.

Abstract: A tunable hydrothermal synthesis of single-crystalline BaMnO3 nanoparticles is reported. The parameters governing the synthesis pathway are carefully evaluated, assessing their influence on both the morphology and size of the as-prepared products. The reactor filling volume is found to have a main influence on the particle shape (predominance of microrods for a filling volume of 70% and particles for ca 40−50 %), whereas the alkalinity is crucial for the control over the size: higher alkalinities lead to a drastic decrease in both final particle size and aspect ratio. Average minimum particle diameters of ca 20 nm are prepared using a KOH concentration of 20 M, metallic salts concentrations of 50 or 100 mM, and a filling volume of 53%. Finally, the temperature and time exert a minor influence on the final structural properties of the resulting products: 200 °C and lower (even 150°C) and times of 24 hours or less (4 hours) are suitable for nanoparticles formation. Abstract: We study the origin of the magnetoelectric coupling in manganite films on ferroelectric substrates. We find large magnetoelectric coupling in LaCaMnO/BaTiO ultra-thin films in experiments based on the converse magnetoelectric effect. The magnetization changes by around 30-40% upon applying electric fields on the order of 1 kV/cm to the BaTiO substrate, corresponding to magnetoelectric coupling constants on the order of α = (2-5)·10 s/m. Magnetic anisotropy is also affected by the electric field induced strain, resulting in a considerable reduction of coercive fields. We compare the magnetoelectric effect in pre-poled and unpoled BaTiO substrates. Polarized neutron reflectometry reveals a two-layer behavior with a depressed magnetic layer of around 30 Å at the interface. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) shows a granular magnetic structure of the LaCaMnO. Abstract: We investigate the magnetic properties of two typical II-VI semiconducting nanocrystals, namely, ZnS and ZnO, doped with various concentrations of a transition metal ion, Mn. A wide range of dopant concentrations was explored without changing the size of the nanocrystal, thereby allowing us to study the concentration dependence of various properties independent of any size variation of the host. Abstract: The effect of the localization of electrons as Mo is substituted by W in the Sr2FeMo1−xWxO6 (0≤x≤1) series has been studied by neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and SQUID magnetometry. The samples for x = 0.2,0.5,0.8 and 1 were prepared by soft-chemistry procedures and annealed under suitable reducing conditions for each member of the series. As the number of itinerant electrons drastically changes from Sr2FeMoO6 (one electron per formula unit) to Sr2FeWO6 (no itinerant electrons), this series constitutes an ideal system to explore band filling effects in the magnetic structure and the Curie temperature of half-metallic ferromagnetic double perovskites. The room-temperature crystal structure of the former members of the series (x≤0.5) is tetragonal (I4/m) and it is characterized by a single antiphase tilt of the FeO6 and (Mo,W)O6 octahedra along the c axis; this structure evolves to the more distorted monoclinic (P 21/n) for x = 0.8 and 1, containing three kinds of non-equivalent oxygen atoms. The driving force of the structural phase transition is the promotion of the voluminous Fe2+ cations upon W substitution, as demonstrated by a bond valence study. The phase transition is accompanied by a sudden decrease of the distortion of the FeO6 and (Mo,W)O6 octahedra. Our results show that the progressive localization of carriers upon W substitution provides a good description of the magnetic and structural properties along the series. The study of the low-temperature (10 K) NPD pattern of the heavily W-doped Sr2FeMo0.2W0.8O6 suggests a lack of long-range magnetic ordering, which is consistent with the presence of isolated ferromagnetic clusters in the insulating, antiferromagnetic matrix created by Fe–O–W–O–Fe superexchange interactions.

Abstract: Residual stresses in a cold drawn pearlitic rod of 18 mm in diameter have been studied by synchrotron radiation and neutron diffraction. The aim has been to characterise the complete residual stresses, including the total phase stresses, macrostresses and microstresses, due to cold drawing. Both techniques have revealed characteristic residual stress profiles along the radius of the rod for the ferrite phase, while the synchrotron radiation measurement has also produced residual stress profiles for the minor cementite phase (11% in weight). Good agreement between the two techniques has been observed. Residual macrostresses derived from the synchrotron measurement show a large variation from center to surface of the rod. The phase stresses for ferrite are dominated by the macrostresses. On the other hand, residual microstresses change less significantly along the radius of the rod and they prevail in the cementite phase.

Abstract: The magnetism of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) epitaxial thin films grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and BaTiO3 (BTO) substrates is studied using polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) techniques. In LCMO/BTO, PNR reveals a strongly suppressed magnetization of 300 kA/m, equivalent to a magnetic moment of 2 μB/Mn, throughout the LCMO layer, amounting to half the expected value. The largest suppression occurs near the interface with BTO, with magnetization values of 50 kA/m, equivalent to 0.3 μB/Mn. FMR is observable at 8.9 GHz only around the [110] crystallographic direction in thin LCMO/BTO. The resonance barely shifts as the applied field is rotated away from [110]. The FMR results are analyzed in terms of magnetoelastic anisotropy and compared to LCMO/STO grown under the same conditions. A two-layer magnetization model is proposed, based on strong out-of-plane anisotropy near the BTO interface and shown to qualitatively explain the main characteristics of the FMR results.

Abstract: In this work we investigate the magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles obtained by two-step synthesis (seeded-growth route) with sizes that range from 6 to 18 nm. The initial seeds result monocrystalline and exhibit ferromagnetic behavior with low saturation field. The subsequent growth of a shell enhances the anisotropy inducing magnetic frustration, and, consequently, reducing its magnetization. This increase in anisotropy occurs suddenly at a certain size (~10 nm). Electronic and structural analysis with X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicates a step reduction in the oxidation state as the particle reaches 10 nm size while keeping its overall structure in spite of the magnetic polydispersity. Abstract: p40s are acidic proteins of eukaryotic cells occurring either free in the cytoplasm or in association with ribosomes, the latter occurring in both monosomes and polysomes. p40s may play a role in the regulation of protein synthesis, although the exact mechanism is not known. Leaves of all 10 plant species examined here, including both monocots and dicots, contained proteins detected on immunoblots with Arabidopsis thaliana p40 antiserum. The number and apparent size of the protein bands were variable even among closely related species. Abundance of p40 relative to ribosomal content during soybean (Glycine max L.) seed germination and during seed and leaf development was examined. p40 abundance correlated with periods of active tissue growth and high polysome content. The plant growth regulator indole acetic acid caused an increase in polysome formation in etiolated pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants and a concomitant recruitment of p40 into polysomes. Subcellular localization at the microscopy level indicated that the pattern of p40 staining is very similar to that for RNA, except that p40 is excluded from the nucleus. These data suggest that p40 is an accessory protein of the ribosome that might play a role in plant growth and development.

Abstract: Wet-chemistry techniques, involving the previous elaboration of reactive citrate precursors, have been used to prepare Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskite in polycrystalline form. This material has been characterized by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, magnetic, and magnetotransport measurements. It exhibits a ferromagnetic Curie temperature of 416K, and an almost complete Fe∕Mo ordering at the B sublattice of the perovskite, accounting for the high saturation magnetization at 5K, of 3.97μB per formula unit. The magnetoresistance (MR) is higher than 45% at 5K, for H=9T, and the low-field MR is as high as 6.5% at room temperature for H=0.3T. These excellent features are a consequence of the good homogeneity of the samples, prepared from precursors where a perfect cationic mixing at atomic level is promoted.

32. Ferroelectric substrate effects on the magnetism, magnetotransport, and electroresistance of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3thin films on BaTiO3

Abstract: La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 optimally doped epitaxial films were grown on ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrates. Electronic transport (magnetoresistance and electroresistance) and magnetic properties showed important anomalies in the temperature interval between 60 and 150 K, below the metal-insulator transition. Scanning probe microscopy revealed changes in BaTiO3 surface morphology at those temperatures. La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thickness is a critical factor: 120-angstrom -thick films showed large anomalies sensitive to electric poling of the BaTiO3, whereas the behavior of 150-angstrom -thick films is closer to that of the reference La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 samples grown on SrTiO3. We propose that, through inhomogenous strain and electric polarization effects, the ferroelectric substrate induces an inhomogenous spin distribution in the magnetic layer. This would imply the coexistence of in-plane and out-of-plane ferromagnetic patches in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, possibly interspersed with antiferromagnetic regions, as it has recently been theoretically predicted. Substrate poling effects are investigated, and a magnetoelectric coupling is demonstrated.

Abstract: et al., We examine the anomalous inverse spin switch behavior in La 0.7Ca 0.3MnO 3(LCMO)/YBa 2Cu 3O 7-δ (YBCO)/LCMO trilayers by combined transport studies and polarized neutron reflectometry. Measuring magnetization profiles and magnetoresistance in an in-plane rotating magnetic field, we prove that, contrary to many accepted theoretical scenarios, the relative orientation between the two LCMO's magnetizations is not sufficient to determine the magnetoresistance. Rather the field dependence of magnetoresistance is explained by the interplay between the applied magnetic field and the (exponential tail of the) induced exchange field in YBCO, the latter originating from the electronic reconstruction at the LCMO/YBCO interfaces. © 2012 American Physical Society., Research at Argonne National Laboratory was supported by the U. 34. Arabidopsis p40 homologue. A novel acidic protein associated with the 40 S subunit of ribosomes

Abstract: We have isolated a full-length cDNA clone from Arabidopsis thaliana that has extensive homology to p40 proteins from other organisms. The cDNA predicts a protein (A-p40) of 298 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 32.5 kDa and a pI of 4.8. Antibodies raised against an A-p40 fusion protein detected a polypeptide of about 40 kDa in Arabidopsis and about 42 kDa in corn and soybean. In two-dimensional gel electrophoresis the antibodies detected several acidic isoforms. A-p40 appears to be located in the cytoplasm in two forms: soluble, or tightly associated with 40 S subunits and polysomes. Mixing experiments with soluble A-p40 and purified corn polysomes showed that the ribosome-associated form does not result from nonspecific binding during extraction. High concentrations of KCl (1.5 M) are needed to release A-p40 from ribosomes, which suggests that it may be a true ribosomal protein. Several pieces of evidence suggest that A-p40 belongs to the acidic class of ribosomal proteins; first, its acidic pI; second, the presence of amino acid repeats conserved in other acidic ribosomal proteins; and third, the fact that it exists in the cell in two pools (free and ribosome-associated).

35. Low field magnetoresistance at the metal–insulator transition in epitaxial manganite thin films

Abstract: We present a study of the magnetotransport behavior around Tc of epitaxial La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films with controlled chemical defects introduced in order to change the electron-lattice coupling (λ). We found unexpected enhancement of the very low field (below 250 Oe) magnetoresistance around Tc and relate it to a reduction of the magnetic domain size. This process is strongly favored by the presence of chemical defects that also promote weak localization of the carriers into polaron clusters that can be overcome by relatively low magnetic fields. This behavior is characteristic of temperatures near Tc where the bandwidth is reduced and localization, due to intrinsic disorder and chemical defects, is more probable. In addition, the increase of λ raises the polaron binding energy and reduces the temperature at which percolation occurs.

Abstract: We report the observation between 40 and 120 K of anomalous magnetic hysteresis loops in thin epitaxial films of La_(0.7)Ca_(0.3)MnO_(3) grown on ferroelectric BaTiO_(3). These hysteresis loops display extremely unusual features: after switching at coercivity, the magnetization overshoots the eventual high-field value. We study the strains in the film and substrate with x-ray diffraction and propose a model of two magnetic moment populations with different magnetoelastic anisotropies. The relative weights of both populations can be estimated by comparison with twin samples of La_(0.7)Ca_(0.3)MnO_(3) films on nonferroelectric SrTiO_(3). We propose that the observed magnetization overshoots the result from differences in the magnetostriction balance as the applied magnetic field increases. The picture of a nonuniform strain field in La_(0.7)Ca_(0.3)MnO_(3) on BaTiO_(3), caused by the corrugation of the ferroelectric domains in the rhombohedric phase of BaTiO_(3), is compatible with the magnetic granular behavior observed in the temperature and field dependences of the magnetization as well as in the low temperature magnetoresistance exhibited by the epitaxial film.

Abstract: The low temperature magnetic properties of MnP nanocrystals (15-40 nm), both in GaP:MnP epilayers and MnP films, are significantly different compared to bulk and cannot apparently be explained by differences in the structure. A simple model of localized spins is used to describe the magnetic screw structure confined to nanocrystals. The results indicate that the observed magnetic behaviour is related to the nanometric size and to changes in the coupling constants most probably localized at an external grain shell. 38. MnP films and MnP nanocrystals embedded in GaP epilayers grown on GaP(001): Magnetic properties and local bonding structure

Abstract: et al., MnP nanostructures embedded in GaP epilayers, and MnP polycrystalline films, grown from the vapor phase on GaP(001) substrates using metalorganic precursors are compared with bulk MnP. We observe a large increase of the low transition temperature from the ferromagnetic to the antiferromagnetic screw phase, from TN 47 K for bulk to 82 K for nanocrystals in MnP:GaP films, while the Curie temperature TC, close to room temperature, varies only slightly. A net magnetic moment is measured in the nanocrystals and films at 5 K, as well as large coercive fields, contrary to bulk MnP. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and diffraction show that epilayers and films contain MnP grains in the nanometric range with average Mn-P bond lengths very close to those of bulk MnP. The MnP film lattice parameters are almost identical to bulk values (within 0.5%) and the main crystallographic preferential orientations are those also present in the epilayers but with different relative populations. Overall the local structures of all MnP forms are very similar, except for indications of more disorder in the nanocrystals. Such combined changes of TN and TC are in apparent contradiction with the known response of bulk MnP to strains induced by hydrostatic, uniaxial or chemical pressure. Abstract: We report on the magnetic coupling of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 layers through SrTiO3 spacers in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 epitaxial heterostructures. Combined aberration-corrected microscopy and electron-energy-loss spectroscopy evidence charge transfer to the empty conduction band of the titanate. Ti d electrons interact via superexchange with Mn, giving rise to a Ti magnetic moment as demonstrated by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. This induced magnetic moment in the SrTiO3 controls the bulk magnetic and transport properties of the superlattices when the titanate layer thickness is below 1 nm.

Microstructure information was deduced from x-ray reflectivity, Mn oxidation state was determined by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and magnetic properties were measured over a temperature range of 5–400 K. Magnetic behavior of these samples is found to be related to the Mn layer thickness (x). Abstract: et al., Bimagnetic materials were fabricated by decorating the external surface of rattle-type hollow silica microspheres (which themselves contain metallic cobalt nanoparticles) with magnetite nanoparticles; thus, each magnetic substance was spatially isolated by the silica shell. The amount of magnetite decoration on the co-occluded hollow silica was varied from 1 to 17 mass %. Magnetic and electronic properties of the resulting bimagnetic materials were characterized by superconducting quantum interference device measurements and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, respectively. The ferrous iron in the bimagnetic sample was slightly more oxidized than in the magnetite reference, probably from some charge-transfer because of the SiO2 surface contact, although the overall oxidation state of the samples is very similar to that of magnetite. The temperature dependence of the sample magnetization recorded with Zero Field Cooling and Field Cooling resulted in blocking temperatures for the bimagnetic materials that were close to that of magnetite nanoparticles (176 K) and were lower than that for the bare Co-occluded hollow silica (which was above room temperature). Values of coercive force and exchange bias at 300 K became quite small after decoration with only minimal amounts of magnetite nanoparticles (1-3 mass %) and were lower than those of magnetite. Abstract: The new complex perovskites of formula R(Cu3−xMnx)Mn4O12 (R=Pr, Nd and x=1,2) have been prepared. The partial replacement of Cu2+ by Mn3+ cations does not involve a change in symmetry from that of the parent compounds RCu3Mn4O12, presenting a cubic structure with space group Im3¯. The Mn3+ introduced at the square-planar 6b site promotes the valence mixing of Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions at the octahedral 8c site, leading to an increase in the bonding distances in the MnO6 octahedron and a slight decrease in the distances in the CuO4 polyhedron. All the compounds present a spontaneous increase in the magnetization below TC, typical of ferro- or ferrimagnetic materials. Due to the increasing content of Mn3+ at the 8c sites, some Mn–Mn exchange interactions switch from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM), weakening the overall FM exchange interactions and decreasing TC and MS. Abstract: A pyrochlore-like phase of composition Ho2MnRuO7 has been synthesized by a soft-chemistry procedure followed by thermal treatments at moderate temperatures up to 900 °C for 12 h in air. It has been characterized by x-ray diffraction and neutron powder diffraction (NPD), as well as dc and ac susceptibilities. As in the parent Ho2Mn2O7 oxide, the magnetic Mn and Ru ions statistically occupy the 16c sites in a cubic unit cell with space group Fd3¯m, which define a potentially frustrated three-dimensional array of corner sharing (Mn,Ru)4 tetrahedra. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities of Ho2MnRuO7 display a sharp increase near 60 K. In addition, the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled curves diverge below 30 K. The ac data present frequency variability below 60 K and broad frequency dependent maxima at lower temperatures (∼30 K), suggesting a spin-glass like behavior similar to Ho2Mn2O7. 47. High-pressure synthesis of the double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6: increment of the cationic ordering and enhanced magnetic properties

Abstract: The double perovskite Sr(2)FeMoO(6) has been prepared in polycrystalline form by high-pressure methods, starting from a precursor developed via a citrate technique, containing an elevated degree of anti-site disordering. The application of high external pressure (2 GPa) to Sr(2)FeMoO(6) promotes the long distance Fe/Mo cationic order, due to the smaller lattice volume of the ordered sample. Both the disordered perovskite obtained at ambient pressure and the sample synthesized under high-pressure methods have been characterized by means of x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and magnetic measurements. The magnetic properties of the two oxides have been compared; the specimen prepared under high pressure not only presents an improved cationic ordering, but also displays a superior saturation magnetization and a sharpener ferromagnetic transition at a significantly high temperature of 430 K.

Abstract: Hybrid ferromagnetic-semiconductor GaP:MnP thin films were grown at 650 °C by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy on GaP(001) using trimethylgallium, tertiarybutylphosphine, and methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MCTMn). Overall Mn concentrations in the hybrid films, determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, were found to be nearly proportional to the MCTMn precursor gas flow rate and ranged from 2 to 3.5 at. %. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses revealed the presence of a homogeneous distribution of 15–30 nm wide nanoclusters in a dislocation-free GaP matrix that is fully coherent with the substrate. The nanocluster facets are predominantly aligned along the (220) planes of the GaP matrix and selected-area electron diffraction patterns in TEM indicate that the nanoclusters are coherent (or semicoherent) with the single-crystal GaP matrix. 50. Interface and Mn valence effects in ferromagnetic insulating multilayers based on Mn and tin oxide

Abstract: Several series of Mn based multilayers (Mn∕SnO2,Mn∕Si,andMn∕SiO2)N were prepared by magnetron sputtering on Si(100) substrates at room temperature (RT). A ferromagnetic phase with TC above 300K is detected only for Mn∕SnO2. The highest ferromagnetic signal corresponds to the presence of Mn in a mixed valence state combined with the presence of tin oxide. Grazing incidence high-angle x-ray diffraction revealed the formation of MnO and SnO1+x nanocrystals. After annealing, no traces of metallic Mn or MnO are detected from x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) or diffraction; Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 oxides and polycrystalline SnO2 were identified. A clear ferromagnetic signal below 42K with high coercive field is then detected corresponding to Mn3O4 but the RT ferromagnetic component decreases drastically. No mixed Mn–Sn–O phases are detected in as-grown or annealed samples.
