1. Being Praised for Prosocial Behaviors Longitudinally Reduces Depressive Symptoms in Early Adolescents: A Population-Based Cohort Study

Abstract: Introduction Depression is highly prevalent and causes a heavy burden in adolescent life. Being praised for prosocial behavior might be a preventive factor because both being praised and prosocial behavior are protective against depression. However, no study has investigated the association between experiences of being praised for prosocial behavior and depressive symptoms in adolescents. Objectives Here, we investigated the longitudinal relationship between being praised for prosocial behavior and depressive symptoms in adolescents. Methods In Tokyo Teen Cohort study (TTC), an ongoing prospective population-based cohort study, we collected 3,171 adolescents’ data on self-reported experiences of being praised for prosocial behavior, depressive symptoms, and caregiver-evaluated prosocial behavior. Ten-year-old children were asked to freely describe answers to the question “What are you praised for?”. Only children who clearly answered that they were praised for their prosocial behavior were designated the “prosocial praise group.” The degree of depression at ages 10 and 12 was measured with the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ), a self-report questionnaire about depression. Objective prosocial behavior of the 10 year-old children was assessed by the Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ). Multiple linear regression analysis was performed using the SMFQ score at age 12 as the objective variable and being praised for prosocial behavior as the main explanatory variable, and the SMFQ score at age 10 and the objective prosocial behavior at age 10 were included as confounders. Results 3,007 pairs of child and their primary caregiver participated in the second data collection at the age of 12 years (follow-up rate was 94.8%). Regarding the question “What are you praised for?”, 845 (28.1%) children answered that they were praised for prosocial behavior. Depressive symptoms (SMFQ scores) in the “prosocial praise group” were significantly lower than those in the other group both at age 10 (4.3 ± 4.4 vs. 4.9 ± 4.6, p < 0.001) and at age 12 (3.4 ± 4.2 vs. 4.0 ± 4.6, p < 0.01). In the single regression analysis, the children who reported being praised for prosocial behavior at age 10 had significantly lower depressive symptoms at age 12 (partial regression variable: −0.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) [−0.96, −0.17]). This association remained significant after adjusting for confounders, including baseline depressive symptoms (partial regression variable: −0.44, 95% CI [−0.80, −0.08]). Prosocial behavior alone was not associated with depressive symptoms. Image: Conclusions Being praised for prosocial behavior rather than objective prosocial behavior at 10 years of age predicted lower depressive symptoms 2 years later. 2. Beam dynamics and characterization of a new high-intensity compact air-core high temperature superconducting skeleton cyclotron (HTS-SC)

Abstract: A new air-core high-temperature superconducting skeleton cyclotron (HTS-SC) is proposed to produce a 50 MeV H+beam of up to 0.5 mA for the accelerator-based multi-port BNCT system (AB-mBNCT). The HTS-SC is a unique air-core K-50 cyclotron, characterized by a combination of air-core high-temperature superconducting coils to avoid any non-linear effects arising from saturation of an iron core and yoke, while ensuring a linear magnetic field adjustment. This study discusses the basic design of the HTS-SC, including a specific configuration of the air-core coils and central region, as well as the corresponding beam dynamics calculations from injection to extraction for a high-intensity beam. In order to achieve a beam intensity of about 0.5 mA at an ambitiously small radius of 40 cm, particular attention is given at the vicinity of extraction, where the beam condition is volatile and beam loss is severe. Besides, combinations of techniques such as beam collimation in the central region, flat-top acceleration and precessional extraction have been applied to improve the extraction efficiency by almost 50%. Finally, this work concludes with the feasibility of the compactness of the HTS-SC to inject, accelerate and extract up to 0.5 mA H+for the realization of AB-mBNCT and RI production.

3. Room temperature magnetic shape-memory effect in strontium-doped lanthanum cobaltite single crystals

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the temperature dependence of magnetostriction in the twinned rhombohedral perovskite structure-based lanthanum cobaltite La0.8Sr0.2CoO3. The magnetostriction measured in a magnetic field applied along the pseudocubic [111]c axis showed large hysteresis and residual strains. The residual strains are caused by the twin deformation, which we observed using x-ray diffraction. We found that the critical magnetic field for the twin deformation of La0.8Sr0.2CoO3 increases with temperature. The twin deformation occurs in a sufficiently strong magnetic field (∼6 T), even in the paramagnetic region at room temperature. We also confirmed that the temperature dependence of the critical magnetic field for twin deformation is related to the temperature dependence of the magnetization.

Abstract: Small changes in the radiation budget at the earth's surface can lead to large climatological responses when persistent over time. With the increasing debate on anthropogenic influences on climatic processes during the 1980s the need for accurate radiometric measurements with higher temporal resolution was identified, and it was determined that the existing measurement networks did not have the resolution or accuracy required to meet this need. In 1988 the WMO therefore proposed the establishment of a new international Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN), which should collect and centrally archive high-quality ground-based radiation measurements in 1 min resolution. BSRN began its work in 1992 with 9 stations; currently (status 2018-01-01), the network comprises 59 stations (delivering data to the archive) and 9 candidates (stations recently accepted into the network with data forthcoming to the archive) distributed over all continents and oceanic environments. The BSRN database is the World Radiation Monitoring Center (WRMC). It is hosted at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany, and now offers more than 10 300 months of data from the years 1992 to 2017. Abstract: Abstract Reflection states are introduced in the vertical and horizontal modules of the Ding-Iohara-Miki (DIM) algebra (quantum toroidal gl1 $$ \mathfrak{g}{\mathfrak{l}}_1 $$). Webs of DIM representations are in correspondence with (p, q)-web diagrams of type IIB string theory, under the identification of the algebraic intertwiner of Awata, Feigin and Shiraishi with the refined topological vertex. Extending the correspondence to the vertical reflection states, it is possible to engineer the N=1 $$ \mathcal{N}=1 $$ quiver gauge theory of D-type (with unitary gauge groups). In this way, the Nekrasov instanton partition function is reproduced from the evaluation of expectation values of intertwiners. This computation leads to the identification of the vertical reflection state with the orientifold plane of string theory. We also provide a translation of this construction in the Iqbal-Kozcaz-Vafa refined topological vertex formalism.

Abstract: Abstract Instanton partition functions of N=1 $$ \mathcal{N}=1 $$ 5d Super Yang-Mills reduced on S 1 can be engineered in type IIB string theory from the (p, q)-branes web diagram. To this diagram is superimposed a web of representations of the Ding-Iohara-Miki (DIM) algebra that acts on the partition function. In this correspondence, each segment is associated to a representation, and the (topological string) vertex is identified with the intertwiner operator constructed by Awata, Feigin and Shiraishi. We define a new intertwiner acting on the representation spaces of levels (1, n) ⊗ (0, m) → (1, n + m), thereby generalizing to higher rank m the original construction. It allows us to use a folded version of the usual (p, q)-web diagram, bringing great simplifications to actual computations. As a result, the characterization of Gaiotto states and vertical intertwiners, previously obtained by some of the authors, is uplifted to operator relations acting in the Fock space of horizontal representations. We further develop a method to build qq-characters of linear quivers based on the horizontal action of DIM elements. While fundamental qq-characters can be built using the coproduct, higher ones require the introduction of a (quantum) Weyl reflection acting on tensor products of DIM generators.

8. Deuterium retention in W and W-Re alloy irradiated with high energy Fe and W ions: Effects of irradiation temperature

Abstract: Neutron irradiation to W induces defects acting as traps against hydrogen isotopes and transmutation elements such as Re and Os. To investigate synergetic effects on radiation-induced defects and Re, deuterium (D) retention in W and W–5% Re samples were examined after irradiation with 6.4MeV Fe ions at 523–1273K followed by exposure to D2 gas at 673K. The value of D retention in W–5% Re was lower than that in W by orders of magnitude after the irradiation at high temperatures (≥1073K), while no significant effects of Re addition was observed after irradiation at 523K. Irradiation with 20MeV W ions at room temperature followed by exposure to D plasma at 443–743K also resulted in small difference in D retention between W and W–5% Re samples. The results of positron lifetime measurements showed that the reduced D retention by Re observed after high temperature irradiation was due to suppression of formation of vacancy-type defects (monovacancies and vacancy clusters) by Re.

Abstract: The irradiation hardening and microstructures of pure W and W–3%Re for up to 5.0 dpa by self-ion irradiation were investigated in this work. The ion irradiation was conducted using 18 MeV W6+ at 500 and 800°C. A focused ion beam followed by electro-polishing was used to make thin foil specimens for transmission electron microscope observations. Dislocation loops were observed in all the irradiated samples. Voids were observed in all of the specimens except the W–3%Re irradiated to 0.2 dpa. The hardness was measured by using nanoindentation. The irradiation hardening was saturated at 1.0 dpa for pure W. In the case of W–3%Re, the irradiation hardening showed a peak at 1.0 dpa. The correlation between the microstructure and hardening was investigated.

Abstract: For future linear colliders, a nanometer-scale beam size at the interaction point (IP) is one of the most challenging technical aspects. To explore the feasibility of a final focus system with a high chromaticity level, comparable to that of the Compact Linear Collider, the ultralow β^{*} optics has been proposed and tuned at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility 2. In this paper, the recent experimental results are presented, which demonstrate the capability of achieving and stabilizing a vertical average beam size of 60 nm and below at the virtual IP. The observed vertical beam size is about 20 nm above the numerical predictions in the presence of static and dynamic imperfections. We interpret this discrepancy as beam size growth due to multipole fields, beam jitters and wakefield effects, and diagnostic errors.

11. Delivering the world’s most intense muon beam

Abstract: A new muon beam line, the muon science innovative channel, was set up at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka University, in Osaka, Japan, using the 392 MeV proton beam impinging on a target. The production of an intense muon beam relies on the efficient capture of pions, which subsequently decay to muons, using a novel superconducting solenoid magnet system. After the pion-capture solenoid, the first 36° of the curved muon transport line was commissioned and the muon flux was measured. In order to detect muons, a target of either copper or magnesium was placed to stop muons at the end of the muon beam line. Two stations of plastic scintillators located upstream and downstream from the muon target were used to reconstruct the decay spectrum of muons. In a complementary method to detect negatively charged muons, the x-ray spectrum yielded by muonic atoms in the target was measured in a germanium detector. Measurements, at a proton beam current of 6 pA, yielded (10.4±2.7)×10^{5} muons per watt of proton beam power (μ^{+} and μ^{-}), far in excess of other facilities. At full beam power (400 W), this implies a rate of muons of (4.2±1.1)×10^{8} muons s^{−1}, among the highest in the world. The number of μ^{-} measured was about a factor of 10 lower, again by far the most efficient muon beam produced. The setup is a prototype for future experiments requiring a high-intensity muon beam, such as a muon collider or neutrino factory, or the search for rare muon decays which would be a signature for phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Such a muon beam can also be used in other branches of physics, nuclear and condensed matter, as well as other areas of scientific research.

Abstract: ATF2 is a final-focus test beam line which aims to focus the low emittance beam from the ATF damping ring to a vertical size of about 37 nm and to demonstrate nanometer level beam stability. Several advanced beam diagnostics and feedback tools are used. In December 2008, construction and installation were completed and beam commissioning started, supported by an international team of Asian, European, and U.S. scientists. 13. Production of high brightness γ rays through backscattering of laser photons on high-energy electrons

Abstract: Based on the requirements from a conceptual design of a polarized positron beam for future linear colliders, we constructed a special collision system with a short focal length of 150 mm of the laser beams so as to produce γ rays through inverse Compton scattering. In order to achieve efficient laser-electron collisions, we created a special optics to produce very small e^{-}-beam sizes of σ_{e_{x0}}=7.6 μm and σ_{e_{y0}}=5.4 μm in the horizontal and vertical directions at the collision point. Using laser light with a wavelength of 532 nm and an e^{-} beam of 1.28 GeV, provided from the ATF-damping ring at KEK, we generated 2×10^{5} γ rays with a time duration of 26 ps in rms, leading to a peak brightness of 1.7×10^{18}/(mrad^{2} mm^{2} 0.1%bandwidth s) near to the maximum energy of 56 MeV.

14. Proton Irradiation Experiment for the X-ray Charge-Coupled Devices of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image mission onboard the International Space Station: I. Experimental Setup and Measurement of the Charge Transfer Inefficiency

Abstract: We have investigated the radiation damage effects on a CCD to be employed in the Japanese X-ray astronomy mission including the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Since low energy protons release their energy mainly at the charge transfer channel, resulting a decrease of the charge transfer efficiency, we thus focused on the low energy protons in our experiments. A 171 keV to 3.91 MeV proton beam was irradiated to a given device. We measured the degradation of the charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) as a function of incremental fluence. A 292 keV proton beam degraded the CTI most seriously. Taking into account the proton energy dependence of the CTI, we confirmed that the transfer channel has the lowest radiation tolerance. We have also developed the different device architectures to reduce the radiation damage in orbit. Among them, the ``notch'' CCD, in which the buried channel implant concentration is increased, resulting in a deeper potential well than outside, has three times higher radiation tolerance than that of the normal CCD. We then estimated the charge transfer inefficiency of the CCD in the orbit of ISS, considering the proton energy spectrum. The CTI value is estimated to be 1.1e-5 per each transfer after two years of mission life in the worse case analysis if the highest radiation-tolerant device is employed. This value is well within the acceptable limit and we have confirmed the high radiation-tolerance of CCDs for the MAXI mission., Comment: 17 pages, 2 table, 12 figures. 15. Mechanical Affective Touch Therapy for Anxiety Disorders: Effects on Resting State Functional Connectivity

Abstract: Mechanical Affective Touch Therapy (MATT) is a safe, novel form of noninvasive peripheral nerve stimulation. Although mechanical stimulation activates nerves, we know little about its impact on psychiatric symptoms and their underlying cortical mechanisms. We examined the effects of open-label MATT on resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) and its relationship with anxiety and affective symptomatology (clinical results in separate report).A total of 22 adults with an Axis I anxiety disorder were recruited from the community. After two initial sessions assisted by research staff, participants self-administered 20-minute sessions of MATT at home at least twice daily for four weeks. Self-report measures of mood and anxiety severity were collected at baseline, two weeks, and four weeks. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging was collected before the initial MATT session (n = 20), immediately after the first session (n = 18), and following four weeks of MATT (n = 14). Seed-based whole-brain functional connectivity analyses identified brain connectivity patterns correlated with responsiveness to MATT. Seeds were based on Neurosynth meta-analytic maps for "anxiety" and "pain" given MATT's hypothesized role in anxiety symptom amelioration and potential mechanism of action through C-tactile afferents, which play an important role in detecting pain and its affective components. Connectivity results were corrected for multiple comparisons (voxel p 0.005, cluster p-FDR 0.05).Baseline RSFC is predictive of symptom improvement with chronic MATT. Acute increases in insula connectivity were observed between mid-cingulate cortex and postcentral motor regions following the first MATT session. Chronic MATT was associated with increased connectivity between pain and anxiety regions of interest (ROIs) and posterior default mode network (DMN) regions involved in memory and self-reflection; the connectivity changes correlated with decreases in stress and depression symptoms.MATT is associated with alterations in RSFC in the DMN of anxiety disorder patients both acutely and after long-term administration, and baseline RSFC is predictive of post-treatment symptom improvement.

Abstract: Malaria remains a public health problem in Thailand, especially along its borders where highly mobile populations can contribute to persistent transmission. This study aimed to determine resistant genotypes and phenotypes of 112 Plasmodium falciparum isolates from patients along the Thai-Cambodia border during 2013–2015. The majority of parasites harbored a pfmdr1-Y184F mutation. A single pfmdr1 copy number had CVIET haplotype of amino acids 72–76 of pfcrt and no pfcytb mutations. All isolates had a single pfk13 point mutation (R539T, R539I, or C580Y), and increased % survival in the ring-stage survival assay (except for R539I). Multiple copies of pfpm2 and pfcrt-F145I were detected in 2014 (12.8%) and increased to 30.4% in 2015. Parasites containing either multiple pfpm2 copies with and without pfcrt-F145I or a single pfpm2 copy with pfcrt-F145I exhibited elevated IC90 values of piperaquine. Collectively, the emergence of these resistance patterns in Thailand near Cambodia border mirrored the reports of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine treatment failures in the adjacent province of Cambodia, Oddar Meanchey, suggesting a migration of parasites across the border. As malaria elimination efforts ramp up in Southeast Asia, host nations militaries and other groups in border regions need to coordinate the proposed interventions.

Abstract: Simulium (Gomphostilbia) ogatai (Rubtsov) from Japan, the only Palaearctic species in the S. ceylonicum species-group, is morphologically revised. Its female is described for the first time and its male and pupa are redescribed based on specimens from Gifu, Honshu. It is characterized in the female and male by the base of the radius with a tuft of yellow hairs, in the female by the head slightly wider than the thorax, 5.89 times as wide as the greatest width of the frons, and short sensory vesicle 0.21-0.24 times as long as the third palpal segment; in the male by the number of upper-eye (large) facets in 15 vertical columns and 16 horizontal rows, and hind basitarsus spindle-shaped, enlarged, 3.79 times as long as wide, and 0.83 and 1.00 times as wide as the greatest width of the hind tibia and femur, respectively; and in the pupa by the terminal hooks simple and cone-like, and the cocoon with an anterodorsal projection. Taxonomic notes for this species are given relevant to several related species in the Oriental Region, and its assignment to the S. ceylonicum species-group is confirmed.

Abstract: BackgroundMost external peripheral nerve stimulation devices designed to alter mood states use electrical energy, but mechanical stimulation for activation of somatosensory pathways may be harnessed for potential therapeutic neuromodulation. A novel investigational device for Mechanical Affective Touch Therapy (MATT) was created to stimulate C-tactile fibers through gentle vibrations delivered by piezoelectric actuators on the bilateral mastoid processes.Methods22 adults with anxiety disorders and at least moderate anxiety symptom severity enrolled in an open-label pilot trial that involved MATT self-administration using a simple headset at home at least twice per day for 4 weeks. Resting EEG data were acquired before and after a baseline MATT session and again before the final MATT session. Self-report measures of mood and anxiety were collected at baseline, week 2, and week 4, while interoception was assessed pre- and post-treatment.ResultsAnxiety and depressive symptoms improved significantly from baseline to endpoint, and mindfulness was enhanced. EEG metrics confirmed an association between acute MATT stimulation and oscillatory power in alpha and theta bands; symptom changes correlated with changes in some metrics.ConclusionOpen-label data suggest MATT is a promising non-invasive therapeutic approach to anxiety disorders that warrants further development.

Abstract: OBJECTIVES To determine if vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) changes with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS Serum from a naturalistic population of 15 patients with MDD was collected at baseline and after standard TMS treatment. VEGF concentration was determined via ELISA. Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self Report and Patient Health Questionnaire were used as a measure of depression symptom severity, clinical response and remission. Mann-Whitney U and Kendall's Tau Correlation were used for continuous variables. RESULTS VEGF increased from pre- to post-TMS (+30.3%) in remitters whereas VEGF decreased in non-remitters (-9.87%) (P < 0.05). This same pattern was observed when comparing mean %change in VEGF between responders (+14.7%) and non-responders (-14.9%) (P = 0.054). Correlation was present between change in VEGF concentration (baseline to post) and change in Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report at Tx30 (r = -0.371, P < 0.054), reflecting greater increases in VEGF linked to greater improvement in depressive symptoms following the standard 6-week course of TMS. CONCLUSION Patients with a successful treatment with TMS had significantly greater increase in VEGF from baseline to after treatment compared to non-responders/non-remitters and a larger increase in VEGF was associated with greater improvement in depressive symptoms after TMS. This is the first report examining VEGF levels in depressed patients receiving TMS. This study provides correlative data supporting further investigation into VEGF's role as an important mediator in the processes underpinning TMS' antidepressant effects and as a potential biomarker of clinical outcomes.

Abstract: Background In April 2017, the Thai Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) was alerted to a potential malaria outbreak among civilians and military personnel in Sisaket Province, a highly forested area bordering Cambodia. The objective of this study was to present findings from the joint civilian-military outbreak response. Methods A mixed-methods approach was used to assess risk factors among cases reported during the 2017 Sisaket malaria outbreak. Routine malaria surveillance data from January 2013 to March 2018 obtained from public and military medical reporting systems and key informant interviews (KIIs) (n = 72) were used to develop hypotheses about potential factors contributing to the outbreak. Joint civilian-military response activities included entomological surveys, mass screen and treat (MSAT) and vector control campaigns, and scale-up of the “1–3–7” reactive case detection approach among civilians alongside a pilot “1–3–7” study conducted by the Royal Thai Army (RTA). Results Between May–July 2017, the monthly number of MoPH-reported cases surpassed the epidemic threshold. Outbreak cases detected through the MoPH mainly consisted of Thai males (87%), working as rubber tappers (62%) or military/border police (15%), and Plasmodium vivax infections (73%). Compared to cases from the previous year (May–July 2016), outbreak cases were more likely to be rubber tappers (OR = 14.89 [95% CI: 5.79–38.29]; p P. vivax (OR=2.32 [1.27–4.22]; p = 0.006). Themes from KIIs were congruent with findings from routine surveillance data. Though limited risk factor information was available from military cases, findings from RTA’s “1–3–7” study indicated transmission was likely occurring outside military bases. Data from entomological surveys and MSAT campaigns support this hypothesis, as vectors were mostly exophagic and parasite prevalence from MSAT campaigns was very low (range: 0-0.7% by PCR/microscopy). Conclusions In 2017, an outbreak of mainly P. vivax occurred in Sisaket Province, affecting mainly military and rubber tappers. Vector control use was limited to the home/military barracks, indicating that additional interventions were needed during high-risk forest travel periods. Importantly, this outbreak catalyzed joint civilian-military collaborations and integration of the RTA into the national malaria elimination strategy (NMES). The Sisaket outbreak response serves as an example of how civilian and military public health systems can collaborate to advance national malaria elimination goals in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Abstract: Background In Thailand, HIV transmission is well characterized in large urban centers such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai but less so outside of these areas. We assessed HIV incidence and associated risk factors in two other locations. Methods Participants assigned male sex at birth were enrolled in Nakhon Ratchasima and Ratchaburi. HIV and syphilis testing and sociobehavioral questionnaires occurred over 18 months. HIV incidence rates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a Poisson distribution. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% CIs for associations between potential risk factors and HIV seroconversion. Results A total of 1003 participants were enrolled. Overall HIV incidence was 1.56 per 100 person-years (95% CI:1.02–2.44) and similar at both sites. In the fully adjusted model, receptive anal sex in the past 6 months was associated with seroconversion (aHR:3.05, 95% CI:1.00-9.32), while sex with a sex worker in the past six months was associated with reduced risk of seroconversion (aHR:0.11, 95% CI:0.01–0.80). In the parsimoniously adjusted model, receptive anal sex (aHR:3.35, 95% CI:1.30–8.63) and STI diagnosis in the past six months (aHR:3.39, 95% CI:1.11–10.29) were associated with seroconversion, while sex with a sex worker in the past six months was associated with reduced risk of seroconversion (aHR:0.12, 95% CI:0.02–0.70). Conclusions Recent receptive anal sex practices were associated with HIV acquisition in these populations, highlighting the continued need for interventions encouraging safer anal sex practices to reduce HIV incidence.

Abstract: Background Anhedonia is one of the defining features of depression but it remains difficult to target and treat. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a proven treatment for depression, but its effects on anhedonia and whether anhedonia can be used as a predictive biomarker of response is not well known. Methods Snaith–Hamilton Pleasure Scale was administered to patients with depression before and after a standard course of TMS in a naturalistic outpatient setting. Results 144 patients were analyzed. There was an overall significant improvement in anhedonia from pre‐ to post‐treatment (7.69 ± 3.88 vs. 2.96 ± 3.45; p, Here, we report our findings on the decrease in anhedonia symptoms in patients with treatment resistant depression receiving repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in a naturalistic outpatient setting. Furthermore, we report that baseline anhedonia symptoms and severity were not predictive of clinical outcome of TMS and those with severe anhedonia were just as likely to achieve clinical response/remission.

Abstract: MalariaGEN is a data-sharing network that enables groups around the world to work together on the genomic epidemiology of malaria. Here we describe a new release of curated genome variation data on 7,000 Plasmodium falciparum samples from MalariaGEN partner studies in 28 malaria-endemic countries. High-quality genotype calls on 3 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and short indels were produced using a standardised analysis pipeline. Copy number variants associated with drug resistance and structural variants that cause failure of rapid diagnostic tests were also analysed. Almost all samples showed genetic evidence of resistance to at least one antimalarial drug, and some samples from Southeast Asia carried markers of resistance to six commonly-used drugs. Genes expressed during the mosquito stage of the parasite life-cycle are prominent among loci that show strong geographic differentiation. By continuing to enlarge this open data resource we aim to facilitate research into the evolutionary processes affecting malaria control and to accelerate development of the surveillance toolkit required for malaria elimination.

Abstract: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), an established treatment for treatment-resistant depression, may hold promise as a personalized medicine approach for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). Clinical research has begun to identify patient-specific factors that could be used to guide rTMS treatment decisions or individualized treatment approaches. This literature review describes a range of patient factors which have been evaluated as potential biomarkers of rTMS treatment response, including patient- and illness-related characteristics, genetic factors, and biomarkers derived from neuroimaging and EEG. We highlight the need for validation data for imaging and electrophysiological biomarkers associated with rTMS as well as prospective evaluation of clinical predictors. Finally, we consider implications for future efforts to move toward a personalized medicine approach in the treatment of depression with rTMS.

Abstract: Malaria remains a public health problem in Thailand, especially along its borders where highly mobile populations can contribute to persistent transmission. This study aimed to determine resistant genotypes and phenotypes of 112 Plasmodium falciparum isolates from patients along the Thai-Cambodia border during 2013-2015. The majority of parasites harbored pfmdr1-Y184F mutation. A single pfmdr1 copy number, had CVIET haplotype of amino acids 72-76 of pfcrt and no pfcytb mutations. All isolates had a pfk13 point mutation (R539T, R539I, and C580Y), and increased ring-stage survival assay (except R539I). Multiple copies of pfpm2 and pfcrt-F145I were first detected in 2014 (12.8%) and increased to 30.4% in 2015. Parasites containing either multiple pfpm2 copies with and without pfcrt-F145I or a single pfpm2 copy with pfcrt-F145I exhibited the elevated IC90 values of piperaquine. Antimalarials were detected in 21 samples (18.8%) by mass spectrometer, and 12 samples (10.7%) by bioassay. Collectively, the emergence of these resistance patterns mirrored the reports of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine treatment failures in the adjacent province of Cambodia, Oddar Meanchey, suggesting a migration of parasites across the border. As malaria elimination efforts ramp up in Southeast Asia, host nations militaries and other groups in border regions must be a focus for interventions

Abstract: We determined the prevalence of Kelch 13 mutations and pfmdr1 copy number in samples collected from the Thailand–Myanmar border, the Thailand–Cambodia border, and southern Thailand from 2002 to 2007. C580Y was the most prevalent in Trat (Thailand–Cambodia border) and Ranong (Thailand–Myanmar border) at 42% (24/57) and 13% (6/48), respectively. Less predominant mutations were also identified including R539T (7%, 4/57) and Y493H (2%, 1/57) in Trat, P574L (6%, 3/48) and P553L (2%, 1/48) in Ranong, and N537I and D452E (7%, 1/15) in Sangkhlaburi (Thailand–Myanmar border). Samples from Mae sot (33%, 11/33) harbored the highest percentage of multiple pfmdr1 copies, followed by Trat (18%, 10/57), Chiang Dao in 2003 (13%, 4/30), Phang Nga (5%, 2/44), and Chiang Dao in 2002 (4%, 1/26). This retrospective study provides geographic diversity of K13 and pfmdr1 copies and the emergence of these molecular markers in Thailand, an important background information for future surveillance in the region.

Abstract: In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

49. Development of ECR ion source with high-temperature superconducting REBCO coils

Abstract: A new High-Temperature Superconducting ECR (HTS-ECR) ion source is under development in Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. This ion source will be used for production of high intensity proton, deuteron and He ion beams. The HTS-ECR magnets are composed of three solenoid coils and a set of sextupole coils made of REBCO tapes, a high-temperature superconductor. The HTS-ECR ion source is designed to operate at frequency of 2.45 GHz and 10 GHz. Performance test of the HTS coils had been carried out at 31 K and 77 K. This HTS coil technology will be applied to development of a meter-size HTS coil system of a high intensity compact AVF cyclotron. This paper introduces the basic design of the HTS-ECR ion source. The performance test results showed that REBCO solenoids remain superconducting state with a current up to 400 A. Simulation results of the magnetic field and electromagnetic field distributions in a plasma chamber fulfilled the requirements of electron cyclotron resonance conditions at 2.45 GHz and 10 GHz. Simulation result of mirror ratios and electromagnetic field amplitudes are also presented in this paper.

50. Developments of control system for ion source using machine learning

Abstract: Various factors influence each other in an ion source. Therefore, when operating an ion source, it is necessary to optimize and adjust various parameters. This time, we performed an experiment to automize adjustment that maximizes the brightness of the beam using machine learning. By automatically adjusting 4 parameters, we succeeded in finding a point with a beam brightness of 4.32 × 10-6 mA/(imm mrad)2 in 25 steps. This shows that automatic adjustment using Bayesian optimization is feasible.
