1. Imaging the brain and vascular reactions to headache treatments: a systematic review

Abstract

Abstract Background Neuroimaging studies have made an important contribution to our understanding of headache pathophysiology. This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive overview and critical appraisal of mechanisms of actions of headache treatments and potential biomarkers of treatment response disclosed by imaging studies. Main body We performed a systematic literature search on PubMed and Embase databases for imaging studies investigating central and vascular effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments used to abort and prevent headache attacks. Sixty-three studies were included in the final qualitative analysis. Of these, 54 investigated migraine patients, 4 cluster headache patients and 5 patients with medication overuse headache. Most studies used functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (n = 33) or molecular imaging (n = 14). Eleven studies employed structural MRI and a few used arterial spin labeling (n = 3), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (n = 3) or magnetic resonance angiography (n = 2). Different imaging modalities were combined in eight studies. Despite of the variety of imaging approaches and results, some findings were consistent. This systematic review suggests that triptans may cross the blood–brain barrier to some extent, though perhaps not sufficiently to alter the intracranial cerebral blood flow. Acupuncture in migraine, neuromodulation in migraine and cluster headache patients, and medication withdrawal in patients with medication overuse headache could promote headache improvement by reverting headache-affected pain processing brain areas. Yet, there is currently no clear evidence for where each treatment acts, and no firm imaging predictors of efficacy. This is mainly due to a scarcity of studies and heterogeneous treatment schemes, study designs, subjects, and imaging techniques. In addition, most studies used small sample sizes and inadequate statistical approaches, which precludes generalizable conclusions. Conclusion Several aspects of headache treatments remain to be elucidated using imaging approaches, such as how pharmacological preventive therapies work, whether treatment-related brain changes may influence therapy effectiveness, and imaging biomarkers of clinical response. In the future, well-designed studies with homogeneous study populations, adequate sample sizes and statistical approaches are needed.

Abstract

Non-traumatic acute bilateral compartment syndrome is a rare condition that may lead to limb ischemia. We describe a case of this syndrome occurring after a five-kilometer walk in a young woman receiving chronic treatment with lurasidone, leading to a bilateral foot-drop and rhabdomyolysis of the anterolateral compartment of both legs. Due to her late presentation in the emergency department, we opted for a conservative approach, closely monitoring her renal function. We noticed a subsequent clinical and biochemical improvement over the following days, with the patient returning to her daily routine in a matter of weeks, despite a persisting bilateral foot drop. Since atypical antipsychotics are known to be associated with rhabdomyolysis, while possibly exerting a toxic effect on mitochondria, we hypothesize that a mild aerobic physical exertion might have triggered the event, in the context of an iatrogenic muscle susceptibility to oxidative distress.

Abstract

The flutter analysis of rotary laminated structures has been performed using Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). CUF is a one-dimensional higher-order structural model, in which the displacement at the cross-section is the only unknown parameter. The cross-sectional displacement fields of the model are defined using the Lagrange- and Taylor expansion. The quasi-steady and unsteady theories (Theodorsen and Loewy) have been used to apply the aerodynamic force. Subsequently, the equation of motion is defined in ‘fundamental nucleus’ form using Hamilton’s principle. The engineering solution of the flutter condition has been obtained by using p-k method. The computational studies of flutter analysis have been done for various rotor hub, lamination sequence, and structural models. The regular, irregular plies and arbitrary fiber orientation of the orthotropic structures have also been considered. The present study suggests that the proposed CUF model can obtain an aeroelastic solution of rotary structure in a computationally and economically efficient manner.

Abstract

The present work investigates the possibility of reducing the strain/stress concentrations in a open-hole plate using localized 3D printed carbon fiber reinforcements. Several reinforcement strategies have been investigated exploiting the capabilities of a recent additive manufacturing process, the carbon filament fabrication, that allows continuous carbon fibers to be arbitrarily oriented on a plate. Both experimental and numerical investigations have been performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the reinforcements in the mitigation of the strain/stress concentration. The strain fields evaluated during the experimental test, acquired using a digital image correlation technique, have been compared with the results coming from a finite element model. The reliability of the finite element model has been evaluated and its capability to predict the behavior of such complex structures has been checked. The results have shown that the use of an appropriate reinforcement strategy can lead to a considerable reduction in the strain/stress concentration and that an appropriate finite element model can be used to investigate such structures.

Abstract

Whether a house of worship or a simple farmhouse, the fabrication of a building reveals both the unspoken cultural aspirations of the builder and the inevitable exigencies of the construction process. In other-words, why buildings are made is intimately and inevitably associated with how buildings are made. Nowhere is this more evident than in vernacular architecture. At the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) we are concerned that the de-population of Canada's rural areas, paucity of specialized tradespersons, and increasing complexity of building codes threaten the sustainability of this invaluable cultural resource. For current and future generations, the quantitative and qualitative values of traditional methods of construction are essential for an inclusive cultural memory. More practically, and equally pressing, an operational knowledge of these technologies is essential for the conservation of our built heritage. To address these concerns, CIMS has launched a number of research initiatives over the past five years that explore novel protocols for the documentation and dissemination of knowledge related to traditional methods of construction. Our current project, Cultural Diversity and Material Imagination in Canadian Architecture (CDMICA), made possible through funding from Canada's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), explores the potential of building information modelling (BIM) within the context of a web-based environment. In this paper, we discuss our work-to-date on the development of a web-based library of BIM details that is referenced to ''typical'' assemblies culled from 19C and early 20C construction manuals. The parametric potential of these ''typical'' details is further refined by evidence from the documentation of ''specific'' details studied during comprehensive surveys of extant heritage buildings. Here, we consider a BIM of the roof truss assembly of one of the oldest buildings in Canada's national capital – the Commissariat Building and current home to the Bytown Museum – as a case study within the CDMICA project.

6. Coarsely crystalline cryogenic cave carbonate – a new archive to estimate the Last Glacial minimum permafrost depth in Central Europe

Abstract

Cryogenic cave carbonate (CCC) represents a specific type of speleothem whose precipitation is triggered by freezing of mineralized karst water. Coarsely crystalline CCC, which formed during slow freezing of water in cave pools, has been reported from 20 Central European caves located in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. All these caves are situated in an area which was glacier-free during the Weichselian. Whereas the formation of usual types of speleothems in caves of this region usually ceased during the glacials, coarsely crystalline CCC precipitation was restricted to glacial periods. Since this carbonate type represents a novel, useful paleoclimate proxy, data from its Weichselian occurrences in caves in Central Europe were collected, including their C and O stable isotope values, U-series ages and depth below the surface. When using only the CCC data from caves with limited cave ventilation, the permafrost depths of the Weichselian can be estimated to be at least 65 m in the lowlands and uplands. An isolated CCC find indicates that Weichselian permafrost penetrated to a depth of at least 285 m in the High Tatra mountains, Slovakia. A model of the formation of coarsely crystalline CCC assumes its formation especially during periods of permafrost thawing. U-series data confirm that permafrost depth changed and CCC precipitation in deep caves occurred repeatedly in the studied area during marine isotope stages 4, 3 and 2. One important phase of coarsely crystalline CCC formation related to permafrost thawing occurred between 40 and 21 ka BP, and the last phase of its formation was related to the final permafrost destruction between 17 and 12 ka BP.

Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to describe a method for the assessment of the motor performance in post-stroke subjects who have been undergone a robot-aided upper limb rehabilitation treatment. The motivation for adopting such methodology relies on the need of quantitative methods for the evaluation of the effects of robot-aided rehabilitation treatments, which assumes great importance from the clinical point of view. The method is based on the analysis of biomechanical parameters computed from force data recorded during the execution of planar reaching movements. Data from 17 chronic post-stroke patients and 5 healthy subjects were analysed. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, which can contribute to quantitatively evaluate the effects of a robot-mediated therapy on the upper limb of chronic post-stroke subjects.

13. Diffusion-based structural connectivity patterns of multiple sclerosis phenotypes

Abstract

BackgroundWe aimed to describe the severity of the changes in brain diffusion-based connectivity as multiple sclerosis (MS) progresses and the microstructural characteristics of these networks that are associated with distinct MS phenotypes.MethodsClinical information and brain magnetic resonance images were collected from 221 healthy individuals and 823 people with MS at eight MAGNIMS centers. The patients were divided into four clinical phenotypes: clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting, secondary-progressive, and primary-progressive. Advanced tractography methods were used to obtain connectivity matrices. Then, differences in whole-brain and nodal graph-derived measures, and in the fractional anisotropy of connections between groups were analyzed. Support vector machine algorithms were used to classify groups.ResultsClinically isolated syndrome and relapsing-remitting patients shared similar network changes relative to controls. However, most global and local network properties differed in secondary progressive patients compared with the other groups, with lower fractional anisotropy in most connections. Primary progressive participants had fewer differences in global and local graph measures compared to clinically isolated syndrome and relapsing-remitting patients, and reductions in fractional anisotropy were only evident for a few connections. The accuracy of support vector machine to discriminate patients from healthy controls based on connection was 81%, and ranged between 64% and 74% in distinguishing among the clinical phenotypes.ConclusionsIn conclusion, brain connectivity is disrupted in MS and has differential patterns according to the phenotype. Secondary progressive is associated with more widespread changes in connectivity. 14. Manipulating mitochondrial dynamics in the NTS prevents diet-induced deficits in brown fat morphology and activity

Abstract

ObjectivesBrown adipose tissue (BAT) is a potent thermogenic organ, activated by the central nervous system (CNS) through direct noradrenergic sympathetic innervation. Dysregulation of signalling modules in selective CNS areas such as the nucleus of tractus solitarius (NTS) are linked with altered BAT activity, obesity and diabetes. High-fat diet (HFD)-feeding increases mitochondrial fragmentation in the NTS triggering insulin resistance, hyperphagia and weight gain. Here we sought to determine whether changes in mitochondrial dynamics in the NTS can affect BAT activity.MethodsEight-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats received DVC stereotactic surgery to facilitate brain infusion for local administration of viruses that express mutated Drp1 genes. PET/CT scans were used to measure BAT glucose uptake using. Biochemical assays and immunohistochemistry determined altered levels of key signalling molecules and neural innervation of BAT.ResultsWe show that short-term HFD-feeding decreases the ability of BAT to uptake glucose and decreases catecholaminergic innervation of BAT, observed by altered intensities and pools of Tyrosine Hydroxylase (TH) labelling. HFD also increased the infiltration of enlarged white fat droplets in the BAT. We demonstrate that inhibiting mitochondrial fragmentation in NTS-astrocytes of HFD-fed rats can prevent the effects on BAT morphology and neural innervation, and increase BAT glucose uptake while lowering blood glucose and insulin levels. In regular chow-fed rats, increasing mitochondrial fragmentation in the NTS-astrocytes reduces BAT glucose uptake, TH and β3-adrenergic receptor levels.ConclusionsOur data suggest that targeting mitochondrial dynamics in the NTS-astrocytes could be a beneficial strategy to increase energy expenditure and protect from developing obesity and diabetes.Graphical Abstract

15. Plastic changes induced by muscle focal vibration: A possible mechanism for long-term motor improvements

Abstract

Repetitive focal vibrations can induce positive and persistent after-effects. There is still no satisfactory interpretation of the underlying mechanisms. A rationale, which can provide consistency among different results, is highly desirable to guide both the use of the application and future research. To date, interpretive models are formulated to justify the results, depending on the specific protocol adopted. Indeed, protocol parameters, such as stimulus intensity and frequency, intervention time and administration period, are variable among different studies. However, in this article, we have identified features of the protocols that may allow us to suggest a possible common mechanism underlying the effectiveness of focal vibration under different physiologic and pathologic conditions. Since repetitive focal muscle vibration induces powerful and prolonged activation of muscle proprioceptors, we hypothesize that this intense activation generates adaptive synaptic changes along sensory and motor circuits. This may lead to long-term synaptic potentiation in the central network, inducing an enhancement of the learning capability. The plastic event could increase proprioceptive discriminative ability and accuracy of the spatial reference frame and, consequently, improve motor planning and execution for different motor functions and in the presence of different motor dysfunctions. The proposed mechanism may explain the surprising and sometimes particularly rapid improvements in motor execution in healthy and diseased individuals, regardless of specific physical training. This hypothetic mechanism may require experimental evidence and could lead to extend and adapt the application of the “learning without training” paradigms to other functional and recovery needs.

Abstract

Many countries have adopted large-scale tree planting programmes as a climate mitigation strategy and to support local livelihoods. We evaluate a series of large-scale tree planting programmes using data collected from historical Landsat imagery in the state of Himachal Pradesh in Northern India. Using this panel dataset, we use an event study design to estimate the socioeconomic and biophysical impacts over decades of these programmes. We find that tree plantings have not, on average, increased the proportion of forest canopy cover and have modestly shifted forest composition away from the broadleaf varieties valued by local people. Further cross-sectional analysis, from a household livelihood survey, shows that tree planting supports little direct use by local people. We conclude that decades of expensive tree planting programmes in this region have not proved effective. This result suggests that large-scale tree planting may sometimes fail to achieve its climate mitigation and livelihood goals. Large-scale tree planting programmes have been implemented or planned for areas around the world suffering from deforestation, but this study presents evidence that such efforts may not necessarily deliver the desired environmental and economic outcomes.

Abstract

Classification is a critical, widely employed type of hyperspectral image (HSI) processing. Recently, deep learning models have been attracting more attention within the hyperspectral remote-sensing community due to their improved classification performance. Among them, recurrent neural networks (RNNs), which were initially used to handle sequential data, have been applied to HSI classification with promising results. The key point for such RNN-based models in a classification context is the extraction of a sequential feature for each individual pixel in a HSI. One popular strategy is to first extract similar pixels compared with a target pixel from the HSI, and then use those similar pixels to encode its sequential feature. However, the computational cost is tremendous, especially if such similarity-calculation search is done on the whole image. In this article, inspired by our previous work regarding similarity measurement-based sequential feature construction, a faster sequential feature extraction framework for long short-term memory (LSTM)-based HSI classification is proposed, where object-based segmentation method is employed for the purpose of imposing spatial constraints and computational acceleration. Within the proposed framework, both the local segment containing the target pixel and nonlocal segments are considered. For a target pixel, similar segments are selected first based on segment-based features, and then similar pixels from selected segments are extracted to construct a sequential feature. During pixel-wise similarity measurement, both spectral and spatial information are considered in such computation. Experimental results on three benchmark HSI data sets illustrate that the proposed methods achieve promising classification performance with markedly lower computation-time cost.

25. Neurophysiological recordings from parietal areas of macaque brain during an instructed-delay reaching task

Abstract Facilitating data sharing in scientific research, especially in the domain of animal studies, holds immense value, particularly in mitigating distress and enhancing the efficiency of data collection. This study unveils a meticulously curated collection of neural activity data extracted from six electrophysiological datasets recorded from three parietal areas (V6A, PEc, PE) of two Macaca fascicularis during an instructed-delay foveated reaching task. This valuable resource is now accessible to the public, featuring spike timestamps, behavioural event timings and supplementary metadata, all presented alongside a comprehensive description of the encompassing structure. To enhance accessibility, data are stored as HDF5 files, a convenient format due to its flexible structure and the capability to attach diverse information to each hierarchical sub-level. To guarantee ready-to-use datasets, we also provide some MATLAB and Python code examples, enabling users to quickly familiarize themselves with the data structure.

26. Pregnancy in patients affected by axial-spondyloarthritis: a narrative review of disease activity and obstetric outcomes

Abstract

Objective. This review aims to summarize the most recent and updated data on pregnancy in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), focusing on the recurrence of pregnancy-related complications, the disease activity throughout gestation and the postpartum, and the latest indications for the treatments of future mothers. Methods. We have conducted a narrative review with an online literature search on Medline and PubMed. We selected only studies written in English published until January 2024, including observational and retrospective studies, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews. Results. Proper preconception counseling and maternal-fetal monitoring are necessary to ensure the best outcome for both the mother and her baby. Despite the limited and conflicting evidence about the prevalence of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with axSpA compared to healthy controls, primary findings demonstrate an increased risk of preterm delivery (PTD), low birth weight (LBW), and elective cesarean section (CS). Concerning disease activity, data suggests that 25-80% of women with ankylosing spondylitis experience disease flares during pregnancy, particularly around 20 weeks of gestation. On the contrary, the data on the postpartum disease flare are heterogeneous. The use of biological drugs in pregnancy is safe and effective in controlling disease activity. Conclusions. Data on pregnancy outcomes in patients with axSpA are scarce and discordant. Probably the difference in maternal disease classification, the evolution of treatment indications, and the differences emerging from study designs can account for these discrepancies. The main evidence shows an increased risk of PTD, LBW, and elective CS (although the latter may reflect cultural influences rather than medical needs due to axSpA itself). The majority of drugs used to treat axSpA, including TNFi, are safe in pregnancy without harming mothers or fetuses. Further data is needed to clarify many controversial aspects in this area.

Abstract

Mechanical vibration, applied to single or few muscles, can be a selective stimulus for muscle spindles, able to modify neuromuscular management, inducing short and long-term effects, are now mainly employed in clinic studies. Several studies reported as treatments with focal vibratory (FVT) can influence neuromuscular parameters also in healthy people. However, the application modalities and the consequent effects are remarkably fragmented. This paper aims to review these studies and to characterize the FVT effectiveness on long-term conditional capacities in relation to FVT characteristics. A systematic search of studies published from 1985 to 2020 in English on healthcare databases was performed. Articles had to meet the following criteria: (1) treatment based on a locally applied vibration on muscle belly or tendon; (2) healthy adults involved; (3) outcomes time analysis enduring for more than 24 h. Twelve studies were found, all of them presented an excellent quality score of ≥75%. All selected papers reported positive changes, comparable with traditional long-lasting training effects. Muscle force and power were the most investigated parameters. The after-effects persisted for up to several months. Among the different FV administration modalities, the most effective seems to show a stimulus frequency of ≈100 Hz, repeated more times within three-five days on a voluntary contracted muscle.

Abstract

Backgroung Multiple sclerosis (MS) results in a broad range of symptoms, including motor, visual, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric deficits. Some studies, considering affective facial expressions to study emotion processing, demonstrated emotion recognition difficulties in MS patients. Objective We investigated the impact of MS on the emotional-behaviour rating and neurophysiological response (Event Related Potentials-ERP) through a battery of affective visual stimuli selected from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). Methods Twenty patients with diagnosis of Relapsing Remitting MS (RRMS) and 20 Healthy Controls (HC) matched by age, gender and education were enrolled. Each of them, after a neuropsychological assessment, were asked to evaluate arousal and valence of affective visual stimuli. Results Our results showed higher P300 amplitudes in RRMS patients than HC group for pleasant and unpleasant images. Moreover, RRMS patients showed lower Reaction Time (RT) respect HC in valence rating. No other effect did emerge between groups. Conclusion Our study shows early compensatory cerebral mechanisms in RRMS patients throughout emotional information processing, particularly for unpleasant and pleasant stimuli. We hypothesize that this compensatory cerebral mechanism reduces the behavioural dissimilarity between patients and HC.

Abstract

Background: Standardized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidelines published in 2015 by the Europoean MAGNIMS group and in 2016 by the CMSC are important for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and for the appropriate use of MRI in routine clinical practice. Methods: Two panels of experts convened to update existing guidelines for a standardized MRI protocol. The MAGNIMS panel convened in Graz, Austria in April 2019. The CMSC NAIMS panel met separately and independently in Newark, USA in October 2019. Subsequently, the MAGNIMS, NAIMS, and CMSC working groups combined their efforts to reach an international consensus Results: The revised guidelines on MRI in MS merges recommendations from MAGNIMS, CMSC, and NAIMS to improve the use of MRI for diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of individuals with MS. 3D acquisitions are emphasized for optimal comparison over time. Core brain sequences include a 3D-T2wFLAIR for lesion identification and monitoring treatment effectiveness. Gadolinium-based contrast is recommended for diagnostic studies and judicious use for routine monitoring of MS patients. DWI sequences are recommended for PML safety monitoring. Conclusions: The international consensus guidelines strive for global acceptance of a useful and usable standard of care for patients with MS.

Abstract

From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions. © Copyright.

Abstract

Infection with the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii induces changes in neurotransmission, neuroinflammation, and behavior. Yet, it remains elusive how these changes are wrought by the small percentage of neurons that are infected. In this study we investigated how neurotransmission is altered in uninfected neurons during infection by studying suppression of noradrenergic signalling. Noradrenergic signalling is central in modulating the neuroinflammatory response. Previous studies found decreased norepinephrine and down-regulation of the synthetic enzyme dopamine s-hydroxylase (DBH) during chronic infection. Here, extracellular vesicles (ie. exosomes) were isolated from infected cultures that induced transcriptional gene silencing of DBH and DNA hypermethylation upstream of the DBH gene. Intracerebral injection of these extracellular vesicles induced DBH down-regulation in the locus coeruleus region of the brain and contained an antisense lncRNA. Thus, global changes invoked by signals released from infected neural cells may help explain the parasite-induced behavior changes. This novel form of paracrine signalling may apply to other neurotropic infections and enhance our understanding of regulation of neurologic functions.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the effects of a specific protocol, based on a focal muscle vibration, on mechanical parameters in an exercise composed of five repeated bouts of sprint interval tests (Wingate Anaerobic Tests, 10 seconds duration). Twenty-eight young male healthy subjects were randomized to two groups (VIB and CTRL). Peak power (PP), average peak between bouts (aP) and total exercise work (TW) were measured. In both groups, three different exercise sessions were carried out, interspersed by seven days: T0, T1 and T2. Between the baseline (T0) and T1, in the VIB group the intervention was administered on three successive days on quadriceps muscles, whereas a placebo administration was carried out in the CTRL group at the same time. At T1 (30 minutes after intervention) and T2 (7 days after) CTRL did not show any significant change, whereas VIB showed significant increases in PP (11.4%–9.3%), aP (6.6%–6.9%) and TW (5.7%–7.9%) with respect to T0. The results could be explained by an ameliorative agonist-antagonist balance, and this hypothesis is coherent with the literature. On the basis of the present findings, the investigated intervention might be usefully adopted to increase muscular power and endurance.

Abstract

Modern precision weed management relies on site-specific management tactics to maximize resource use efficiency and yield, while reducing unintended environmental impacts caused by herbicides. Scouting for weeds is an important activity to assist weed management decision making, and has been carried out by trained specialists through extensive and routine visual examination of the fields. Recent advancements in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)-based tools and geospatial information technology have created enormous applications for efficient and economical assessment of weed infestations as well as site-specific weed management. The utilization of UAS-based technologies for weed management applications is currently in its infancy, but this field has witnessed rapid growth in recent times in terms of aerial data acquisition and analysis. Challenges exist in UAS platform reliability, sensor capability and integration, image pre-processing, quantitative assessment and prediction, final product development, and product delivery. This review summarizes current knowledge on the utility of UAS platforms and remote sensing tools for weed scouting and precision weed management. Further, it critically examines potential opportunities and limitations to current UAS technologies, with particular emphasis on the lessons learned from UAS-based weed management research conducted at Texas A&M University.

Abstract

A fundamental premise of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is that biodiversity and ecosystem services are key determinants of long-term sustainability of social-ecological systems. With a continuing decline in local and global biodiversity and ecosystem services, it is crucial to understand how biodiversity and various ecosystem services interact and how land change may modify these interactions over time. However, few studies have been conducted to quantify these relationships. In this study, we present the first empirical comparative results to analyze how spatial associations between biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) changed at multiple scales between 1984 and 2010 in the rapidly urbanizing San Antonio River Basin (SARB), Texas, USA. We found statistically significant positive spatial associations among biodiversity, carbon storage, and sediment retention both in the entire SARB and the urban watersheds in Bexar County. Overall, biodiversity and carbon storage declined across the SARB, while sediment retention remained relatively stable. Moreover, the rates of biodiversity loss and carbon storage degradation were negatively related to the urban expansion and have accelerated since the inception of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994. During the pre- and post-NAFTA periods (1984-1995 and 1995-2010, respectively) the rates of biodiversity loss increased from 0.7% to 0.9%, and the rates of carbon-storage loss increased from 0.1% to 1.4% per annum in the urban watersheds. Our hotspot analyses indicate that the upstream watersheds in the Basin, which supply water to the critically important Edwards Aquifer, should be targeted for priority conservation to mitigate the adverse impacts of land change on BES. Our results suggest the strong need for green infrastructure policies that integrate biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of multiple ecosystem services to address the environmentally deleterious impacts of the extensive land change under the NAFTA and to ensure the long-term social-ecological sustainability of the rapidly urbanizing SARB.

Abstract

Abstract The kinematic parameters of reach-to-grasp movements are modulated by action intentions. However, when an unexpected change in visual target goal during reaching execution occurs, it is still unknown whether the action intention changes with target goal modification and which is the temporal structure of the target goal prediction. We recorded the kinematics of the pointing finger and wrist during the execution of reaching movements in 23 naïve volunteers where the targets could be located at different directions and depths with respect to the body. During the movement execution, the targets could remain static for the entire duration of movement or shifted, with different timings, to another position. We performed temporal decoding of the final goals and of the intermediate trajectory from the past kinematics exploiting a recurrent neural network. We observed a progressive increase of the classification performance from the onset to the end of movement in both horizontal and sagittal dimensions, as well as in decoding shifted targets. The classification accuracy in decoding horizontal targets was higher than the classification accuracy of sagittal targets. These results are useful for establishing how human and artificial agents could take advantage from the observed kinematics to optimize their cooperation in three-dimensional space.
