1. Using high-frequency solute synchronies to determine simple two-end-member mixing in catchments during storm events

Abstract

Stream water chemistry at catchment outlets is commonly used to infer flow paths of water through catchments and to quantify the relative contributions of various flow paths and/or end-members, especially during storm events. For this purpose, the number and nature of these flow paths or end-members are commonly determined with principal component analysis based on all available conservative solute data in inverse end-member mixing analyses (EMMAs). However, apart from the selection of conservative solutes, little attention is paid to the number and choice of the solutes that are included in the analysis, despite the impact this choice can have on the interpretation of the results from an inverse EMMA. Here, we propose a methodology that tries to fill this gap. For a given pair of measured solutes, the proposed methodology determines the minimum number of required end-members, based on the synchronous variation of the solutes during storm events. This allows identification of solute pairs for which a simple two-end-member mixing model is sufficient to explain their variation during storm events and of solute pairs, which show a more complex pattern requiring a higher-order end-member mixing model. We analyse the concentration–concentration relationships of several major ion pairs on the storm-event scale, using multi-year, high-frequency (< 60 min) monitoring data from the outlet of two small (0.8 to 5 km2) French catchments with contrasting land use, climate, and geology. A large number of storm events (56 % to 79 %) could be interpreted as being the result of a mixture of only two end-members, depending on the catchment and the ion pairs used. Even though some of these results could have been expected (e.g. a two-end-member model for the Na+/Cl- pair in a catchment close to the Atlantic coast), others were more surprising and in contrast to previous studies. These findings might help to revise or improve perceptual catchment understanding of flow path or end-member contributions and of biogeochemical processes. In addition, this methodology can identify which solute pairs are governed by identical hydro-biogeochemical processes and which solutes are modified by more complex and diverse processes.

2. Combining passive and active distributed temperature sensing measurements to locate and quantify groundwater discharge variability into a headwater stream

Abstract

Exchanges between groundwater and surface water play a key role for ecosystem preservation, especially in headwater catchments where groundwater discharge into streams highly contributes to streamflow generation and maintenance. Despite several decades of research, investigating the spatial variability in groundwater discharge into streams still remains challenging mainly because groundwater/surface water interactions are controlled by multi-scale processes. In this context, we evaluated the potential of using FO-DTS (fibre optic distributed temperature sensing) technology to locate and quantify groundwater discharge at a high resolution. To do so, we propose to combine, for the first time, long-term passive DTS measurements and active DTS measurements by deploying FO cables in the streambed sediments of a first- and second-order stream in gaining conditions. The passive DTS experiment provided 8 months of monitoring of streambed temperature fluctuations along more than 530 m of cable, while the active DTS experiment, performed during a few days, allowed a detailed and accurate investigation of groundwater discharge variability over a 60 m length heated section. Long-term passive DTS measurements turn out to be an efficient method to detect and locate groundwater discharge along several hundreds of metres. The continuous 8 months of monitoring allowed the highlighting of changes in the groundwater discharge dynamic in response to the hydrological dynamic of the headwater catchment. However, the quantification of fluxes with this approach remains limited given the high uncertainties on estimates, due to uncertainties on thermal properties and boundary conditions. On the contrary, active DTS measurements, which have seldom been performed in streambed sediments and never applied to quantify water fluxes, allow for the estimation of the spatial distribution of both thermal conductivities and the groundwater fluxes at high resolution all along the 60 m heated section of the FO cable. The method allows for the description of the variability in streambed properties at an unprecedented scale and reveals the variability in groundwater inflows at small scales. In the end, this study shows the potential and the interest of the complementary use of passive and active DTS experiments to quantify groundwater discharge at different spatial and temporal scales. Thus, results show that groundwater discharges are mainly concentrated in the upstream part of the watershed, where steepest slopes are observed, confirming the importance of the topography in the stream generation in headwater catchments. However, through the high spatial resolution of measurements, it was also possible to highlight the presence of local and highly contributive groundwater inflows, probably driven by local heterogeneities. The possibility to quantify groundwater discharge at a high spatial resolution through active DTS offers promising perspectives for the characterization of distributed responses times but also for studying biogeochemical hotspots and hot moments.

Abstract

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

4. Hydrological hysteresis and its value for assessing process consistency in catchment conceptual models

Abstract

While most hydrological models reproduce the general flow dynamics, they frequently fail to adequately mimic system-internal processes. In particular, the relationship between storage and discharge, which often follows annual hysteretic patterns in shallow hard-rock aquifers, is rarely considered in modelling studies. One main reason is that catchment storage is difficult to measure, and another one is that objective functions are usually based on individual variables time series (e.g. the discharge). This reduces the ability of classical procedures to assess the relevance of the conceptual hypotheses associated with models. We analysed the annual hysteric patterns observed between stream flow and water storage both in the saturated and unsaturated zones of the hillslope and the riparian zone of a headwater catchment in French Brittany (Environmental Research Observatory ERO AgrHys (ORE AgrHys)). The saturated-zone storage was estimated using distributed shallow groundwater levels and the unsaturated-zone storage using several moisture profiles. All hysteretic loops were characterized by a hysteresis index. Four conceptual models, previously calibrated and evaluated for the same catchment, were assessed with respect to their ability to reproduce the hysteretic patterns. The observed relationship between stream flow and saturated, and unsaturated storages led us to identify four hydrological periods and emphasized a clearly distinct behaviour between riparian and hillslope groundwaters. Although all the tested models were able to produce an annual hysteresis loop between discharge and both saturated and unsaturated storage, the integration of a riparian component led to overall improved hysteretic signatures, even if some misrepresentation remained. Such a system-like approach is likely to improve model selection.

Abstract

High-frequency, long-term and multisolute measurements are required to assess the impact of human pressures on water quality due to (i) the high temporal and spatial variability of climate and human activity and (ii) the fact that chemical solutes combine short- and long-term dynamics. Such data series are scarce. This study, based on an original and unpublished time series from the Kervidy-Naizin headwater catchment (Brittany, France), aims to determine solute transfer processes and dynamics that characterise this strongly human-impacted catchment. The Kervidy-Naizin catchment is a temperate, intensive agricultural catchment, hydrologically controlled by shallow groundwater. Over 10 yr, five solutes (nitrate, sulphate, chloride, and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon) were monitored daily at the catchment outlet and roughly every four months in the shallow groundwater. The concentrations of all five solutes showed seasonal variations but the patterns of the variations differed from one solute to another. Nitrate and chloride exhibit rather smooth variations. In contrast, sulphate as well as organic and inorganic carbon is dominated by flood flushes. The observed nitrate and chloride patterns are typical of an intensive agricultural catchment hydrologically controlled by shallow groundwater. Nitrate and chloride originating mainly from organic fertilisers accumulated over several years in the shallow groundwater. They are seasonally exported when upland groundwater connects with the stream during the wet season. Conversely, sulphate as well as organic and inorganic carbon patterns are not specific to agricultural catchments. These solutes do not come from fertilisers and do not accumulate in soil or shallow groundwater; instead, they are biogeochemically produced in the catchment. The results allowed development of a generic classification system based on the specific temporal patterns and source locations of each solute. It also considers the stocking period and the dominant process that limits transport to the stream, i.e. the connectivity of the stocking compartment. This mechanistic classification can be applied to any chemical solute to help assess its origin, storage or production location and transfer mechanism in similar catchments.

Abstract

We estimated whether the fish assemblages nearshore represented by electrofishing and gillnetting indexed location of reservoirs in a river basin. We expected that location in the basin would reflect a multiplicity of factors that determine fish habitat and fish assemblage composition, and therefore also anticipated a correlation between fish species composition and spatial variables if the gear type reflected legitimate differences in fish assemblages. We collected 1.6 million fish of 129 species in 22 reservoirs of the Tennessee River basin, USA. Standardized electrofishing represented different aspects of the fish assemblages than standardized gillnetting. Nevertheless, the assemblages documented by each gear type were correlated with the spatial location of the reservoirs in the river basin. Thus, even as these gear types reflected different aspects of existing fish assemblages, they each tracked spatial differences, suggesting that they reflected standing fish assemblages. Our study supports the use of standardized boat electrofishing and gillnetting as proper means for monitoring fish assemblages at large spatial scales. Our results further suggest that a well-designed and standardized sampling protocol can in fact provide an informative bird’s eye view of fish assemblages at regional, national, or continental scales suitable for informing conservation programs.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To measure the global impact of COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of IV thrombolysis (IVT), IVT transfers, and stroke hospitalizations over 4 months at the height of the pandemic (March 1 to June 30, 2020) compared with 2 control 4-month periods. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, observational, retrospective study across 6 continents, 70 countries, and 457 stroke centers. Diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes or classifications in stroke databases. RESULTS: There were 91,373 stroke admissions in the 4 months immediately before compared to 80,894 admissions during the pandemic months, representing an 11.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] -11.7 to -11.3, p < 0.0001) decline. There were 13,334 IVT therapies in the 4 months preceding compared to 11,570 procedures during the pandemic, representing a 13.2% (95% CI -13.8 to -12.7, p < 0.0001) drop. Interfacility IVT transfers decreased from 1,337 to 1,178, or an 11.9% decrease (95% CI -13.7 to -10.3, p = 0.001). Recovery of stroke hospitalization volume (9.5%, 95% CI 9.2-9.8, p < 0.0001) was noted over the 2 later (May, June) vs the 2 earlier (March, April) pandemic months. There was a 1.48% stroke rate across 119,967 COVID-19 hospitalizations. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection was noted in 3.3% (1,722/52,026) of all stroke admissions. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a global decline in the volume of stroke hospitalizations, IVT, and interfacility IVT transfers. Primary stroke centers and centers with higher COVID-19 inpatient volumes experienced steeper declines. Recovery of stroke hospitalization was noted in the later pandemic months. © 2021 American Academy of Neurology.

Abstract

Objectives Establish recommendations for the management of UTIs in MS patients. Background Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common during multiple sclerosis (MS) and are one of the most common comorbidities potentially responsible for deaths from urinary sepsis. Methods The recommendations attempt to answer three main questions about UTIs and MS. The French Group for Recommendations in MS (France4MS) did a systematic review of articles from PubMed and universities databases (01/1980–12/2019). The RAND/UCLA appropriateness method, which has been developed to synthesize the scientific literature and expert opinions on health care topics, was used for reaching a formal agreement. 26 MS experts worked on the full-text review and a group of 70 multidisciplinary health care specialists validated the final evaluation of summarized evidences. Results UTIs are not associated with an increased risk of relapse and permanent worsening of disability. Only febrile UTIs worsen transient disability through the Uhthoff phenomenon. Some immunosuppressive treatments increase the risk of UTIs in MS patients and require special attention especially in case of hypogammaglobulinemia. Experts recommend to treat UTIs in patients with MS, according to recommendations of the general population. Prevention of recurrent UTIs requires stabilization of the neurogenic bladder. In some cases, weekly oral cycling antibiotics can be proposed after specialist advice. Asymptomatic bacteriuria should not be screened for or treated systematically except in special cases (pregnancy and invasive urological procedures). Conclusion Physicians and patients should be aware of the updated recommendations for UTis and MS.

Abstract

Objectives To establish recommendations on immunization for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Background Vaccines have been suspected in the past to trigger MS and relapses. With the extension of the immunoactive treatment arsenal, other concerns have been raised more recently about an increased risk of infection or a decreased effectiveness of immunization in immunosuppressed patients. Methods The French Group for Recommendations into Multiple Sclerosis (France4MS) performed a systematic search of papers in Medline and other university databases (January 1975–June 2018). The RAND/UCLA appropriateness method was chosen to review the scientific literature and to formalize the degree of agreement among experts on 5 clinical questions related to immunization and MS. Readers from the steering committee conducted a systematic analysis, wrote a critical synthesis and prepared a list of proposals that were evaluated by a rating group of 28 MS experts. The final version of the recommendations was finally reviewed by a reading group of 110 health care professionals and classified as appropriate, inappropriate or uncertain. Results Neurologists should verify the vaccination status as soon as MS is diagnosed and before disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) are introduced. The French vaccination schedule applies to MS patients and seasonal influenza vaccination is recommended. In the case of treatment-induced immunosuppression, MS patients should be informed about the risk of infection and the vaccination standards of the French High Council of Health should be applied. Live attenuated vaccines are contra-indicated in patients recently treated with immunosuppressive drugs, including corticosteroids; other vaccines can be proposed whatever the treatment, but their effectiveness may be partly reduced with some drugs. Conclusion Physicians and patients should be aware of the updated recommendations for immunizations of patients with MS.

Abstract

Nitrate concentrations in streamwater of agricultural catchments often exhibit interannual variations, which are supposed to result from land-use changes, as well as seasonal variations mainly explained by the effect of hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. In catchments on impervious bedrock, seasonal variations of nitrate concentrations in streamwater are usually characterized by higher nitrate concentrations in winter than in summer. However, intermediate or inverse cycles with higher concentrations in summer are sometimes observed. An experimental study was carried out to assess the mechanisms that determine the seasonal cycles of streamwater nitrate concentrations in intensive agricultural catchments. Temporal and spatial patterns of groundwater concentrations were investigated in two adjacent catchments located in south-western Brittany (France), characterized by different seasonal variations of streamwater nitrate concentrations. Wells were drilled across the hillslope at depths ranging from 1·5 to 20 m. Dynamics of the water table were monitored and the groundwater nitrate and chloride concentrations were measured weekly over 2 years. Results highlighted that groundwater was partitioned into downslope domains, where denitrification induced lower nitrate concentrations than into mid-slope and upslope domains. For one catchment, high subsurface flow with high nitrate concentrations during high water periods and active denitrification during low water periods explained the higher streamwater nitrate concentrations in winter than in summer. For the other catchment, the high contribution of groundwater with high nitrate concentrations smoothed or inverted this trend. Increasing bromide/chloride ratio and nitrate concentrations with depth argued for an effect of past agricultural pressure on this catchment. The relative contribution of flows in time and correlatively the spatial origin of waters, function of the depth and the location on the hillslope, and their chemical characteristics control seasonal cycles of streamwater nitrate concentrations and can influence their interannual trends. Abstract

Polycomb and trithorax group genes maintain the appropriate repressed or activated state of homeotic gene expression throughout Drosophila melanogaster development. We have previously identified the batman gene as a Polycomb group candidate since its function is necessary for the repression of Sex combs reduced. However, our present genetic analysis indicates functions of batman in both activation and repression of homeotic genes. The 127-amino-acid Batman protein is almost reduced to a BTB/POZ domain, an evolutionary conserved protein-protein interaction domain found in a large protein family. We show that this domain is involved in the interaction between Batman and the DNA binding GAGA factor encoded by the Trithorax-like gene. The GAGA factor and Batman codistribute on polytene chromosomes, coimmunoprecipitate from nuclear embryonic and larval extracts, and interact in the yeast two-hybrid assay. Batman, together with the GAGA factor, binds to MHS-70, a 70-bp fragment of the bithoraxoid Polycomb response element. This binding, like that of the GAGA factor, requires the presence of d(GA)n sequences. Together, our results suggest that batman belongs to a subset of the Polycomb/trithorax group of genes that includes Trithorax-like, whose products are involved in both activation and repression of homeotic genes.

While most hydrological models reproduce the general flow dynamics, they frequently fail to adequately mimic system-internal processes. In particular, the relationship between storage and discharge, which often follows annual hysteretic patterns in shallow hard-rock aquifers, is rarely considered in modelling studies. One main reason is that catchment storage is difficult to measure, and another one is that objective functions are usually based on individual variables time series (e.g. the discharge). This reduces the ability of classical procedures to assess the relevance of the conceptual hypotheses associated with models. We analysed the annual hysteric patterns observed between stream flow and water storage both in the saturated and unsaturated zones of the hillslope and the riparian zone of a headwater catchment in French Brittany (Environmental Research Observatory ERO AgrHys (ORE AgrHys)). The saturated-zone storage was estimated using distributed shallow groundwater levels and the unsaturated-zone storage using several moisture profiles. All hysteretic loops were characterized by a hysteresis index. Four conceptual models, previously calibrated and evaluated for the same catchment, were assessed with respect to their ability to reproduce the hysteretic patterns. The observed relationship between stream flow and saturated, and unsaturated storages led us to identify four hydrological periods and emphasized a clearly distinct behaviour between riparian and hillslope groundwaters. Although all the tested models were able to produce an annual hysteresis loop between discharge and both saturated and unsaturated storage, the integration of a riparian component led to overall improved hysteretic signatures, even if some misrepresentation remained. Such a system-like approach is likely to improve model selection.

Abstract

The estimation of water and solute transit times in catchments is crucial for predicting the response of hydrosystems to external forcings (climatic or anthropogenic). The hydrogeochemical signatures of tracers (either natural or anthropogenic) in streams have been widely used to estimate transit times in catchments as they integrate the various processes at stake. However, most of these tracers are well suited for catchments with mean transit times lower than about 4-5 years. Since the second half of the 20th century, the intensification of agriculture led to a general increase of the nitrogen load in rivers. As nitrate is mainly transported by groundwater in agricultural catchments, this signal can be used to estimate transit times greater than several years, even if nitrate is not a conservative tracer. Conceptual hydrological models can be used to estimate catchment transit times provided their consistency is demonstrated, based on their ability to simulate the stream chemical signatures at various time scales and catchment internal processes such as N storage in groundwater. The objective of this study was to assess if a conceptual lumped model was able to simulate the observed patterns of nitrogen concentration, at various time scales, from seasonal to pluriannual and thus if it was relevant to estimate the nitrogen transit times in headwater catchments. A conceptual lumped model, representing shallow groundwater flow as two parallel linear stores with double porosity, and riparian processes by a constant nitrogen removal function, was applied on two paired agricultural catchments which belong to the Research Observatory ORE AgrHys. The Global Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) approach was used to estimate parameter values and uncertainties. The model performance was assessed on (i) its ability to simulate the contrasted patterns of stream flow and stream nitrate concentrations at seasonal and inter-annual time scales, (ii) its ability to simulate the patterns observed in groundwater at the same temporal scales, and (iii) the consistency of long-term simulations using the calibrated model and the general pattern of the nitrate concentration increase in the region since the beginning of the intensification of agriculture in the 1960s. The simulated nitrate transit times were found more sensitive to climate variability than to parameter uncertainty, and average values were found to be consistent with results from others studies in the same region involving modeling and groundwater dating. This study shows that a simple model can be used to simulate the main dynamics of nitrogen in an intensively polluted catchment and then be used to estimate the transit times of these pollutants in the system which is crucial to guide mitigation plans design and assessment. Resume Objectif Comparer l'evolution de la pression dans le ballonnet des sondes endotracheales en presence de protoxyde d'azote (N 2 O) dans un modele de trachee avec celles mesurees en clinique. Type d'etude Etude prospective experimentale et clinique. Materiel Douze sondes a ballonnet basse pression de marque differente. Methodes Les variations de pression dans les ballonnets ont ete mesurees pendant 3 heures en presence d'un melange N 2 O (50 vol %)/O 2 (50 vol %) et de ventilation mecanique, la sonde etant introduite soit dans un modele tracheal, soit dans la trachee de patients en cours d'anesthesie generale. Resultats Les valeurs obtenues experimentalement correlaient avec celles mesurees en clinique. De ce fait, le modele tracheal peut guider utilement le choix de sondes endotracheales.

Abstract

Resume Depuis 1991, existe a Rennes un Groupe d'Etude et de Recherche sur l'Infection Osteo-articulaire (GERIO). Parmi les dossiers soumis a l'avis du groupe, la frequence de l'infection a S. aureus resistant a la meticilline (SARM) nous a amenes a revoir retrospectivement 27 cas d'infections osteo-articulaires impliquant ce germe. Il s'agit de patients provenant des services de chirurgie orthopedique, hospitalises le plus souvent dans un contexte traumatique. Une longue periode separe habituellement l'initiation de la therapeutique et le recours a l'avis multidiciplinaire du groupe. Avec un taux de guerison de 77 % malgre le caractere chronique et severe des infections a SARM, cette etude confirme l'interet de la prise en charge multidisciplinaire des infections osteo-articulaires, permettant de rationaliser le traitement medical et chirurgical. Les modifications les plus frequentes amenees par le GERIO concernent le type d'antibiotiques utilises, leur voie d'administration et la duree de prescription.

Abstract

High-frequency, long-term and multisolute measurements are required to assess the impact of human pressures on water quality due to (i) the high temporal and spatial variability of climate and human activity and (ii) the fact that chemical solutes combine short- and long-term dynamics. Such data series are scarce. This study, based on an original and unpublished time series from the Kervidy-Naizin headwater catchment (Brittany, France), aims to determine solute transfer processes and dynamics that characterise this strongly human-impacted catchment. The Kervidy-Naizin catchment is a temperate, intensive agricultural catchment, hydrologically controlled by shallow groundwater. Over 10 yr, five solutes (nitrate, sulphate, chloride, and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon) were monitored daily at the catchment outlet and roughly every four months in the shallow groundwater. The concentrations of all five solutes showed seasonal variations but the patterns of the variations differed from one solute to another. Nitrate and chloride exhibit rather smooth variations. In contrast, sulphate as well as organic and inorganic carbon is dominated by flood flushes. The observed nitrate and chloride patterns are typical of an intensive agricultural catchment hydrologically controlled by shallow groundwater. Nitrate and chloride originating mainly from organic fertilisers accumulated over several years in the shallow groundwater. They are seasonally exported when upland groundwater connects with the stream during the wet season. Conversely, sulphate as well as organic and inorganic carbon patterns are not specific to agricultural catchments. These solutes do not come from fertilisers and do not accumulate in soil or shallow groundwater; instead, they are biogeochemically produced in the catchment. The results allowed development of a generic classification system based on the specific temporal patterns and source locations of each solute. It also considers the stocking period and the dominant process that limits transport to the stream, i.e. the connectivity of the stocking compartment. This mechanistic classification can be applied to any chemical solute to help assess its origin, storage or production location and transfer mechanism in similar catchments.

Abstract

International audience; BACKGROUND: Invasive aspergillosis is an opportunistic infection that occurs mainly among patients with prolonged neutropenia. Few data are available on invasive aspergillosis in nonneutropenic patients. METHODS: The aim of this survey was to compare neutropenic and nonneutropenic patients who had received a diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis at our institution during a 6-year period. RESULTS: Among the 88 cases of invasive aspergillosis analyzed here, 12 were histologically proven, 52 were probable, and 24 were possible. Forty-seven percent of cases were diagnosed in the intensive care unit, and 40% were diagnosed in hematology units. Neutropenia was a risk factor for 52 patients (59%), most of whom had hematological or solid malignancies. Among the 36 nonneutropenic patients (41%), the main underlying conditions were steroid-treated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, giant-cell arteritis, and microvascular disorders; 10 patients were recipients of solid-organ transplants, and 1 patient was seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus. The distribution of proven and probable invasive aspergillosis was similar for neutropenic and nonneutropenic patients. Abstract

The aim of this study is threefold: (1) to evaluate the effect of the physical properties of weathered granitic material (geometry and spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity) on water fluxes at the outlets of two small and nearby agricultural catchments, Kerbemez and Kerrien (0. 12 and 0.095 km(2)), underlain by granite bedrock; (2) to explain the variations of nitrate concentration in streamwater in relation to the spatial distribution of dissolved nitrate in the groundwater; (3) to investigate the origin of the groundwater nitrate by analysing the reaction times of groundwater to variations of nitrate concentration in water recharge. These objectives were attained by developing a flow and nitrate transport model for the two catchments from geophysical measurements on the geometry and hydraulic conductivity of the weathered granite layer, and using data collected from soil surveys. The models were calibrated and validated from spatial and temporal observations of hydraulic heads and nitrate concentrations in groundwater and stream water. The flow models appeared to be less sensitive to the geometry of the weathered granite layer than the spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity. Model results show that seasonal patterns of nitrate concentrations in streamwater result partly from the spatial distribution of nitrate concentration in the groundwater. The horizontal distribution of nitrate concentrations in groundwater derives from denitrification in the downslope domain. An analysis of the groundwater reaction times for both catchments shows that, following a variation in the recharge nitrate concentration; the time to reach equilibrium in the whole groundwater body is more than 14 years. In the Kerbemez catchment, the vertical distribution observed in groundwater nitrate concentrations appears to be caused by a temporal decrease of the nitrate concentration in the water recharge over the last 15 years. Abstract

This paper reports a study of crystallisation kinetics in small volumes of undercooled water-MPG (monopropylene glycol) mixture. The experimental cell is a vertical cylinder (height 5 mm, diameter 2r(c) = 7.5 mm); its bottom section is closed by a Plexiglas disc that transmits light from the lower part of the cylinder to a high-speed digital camera. Photographic recordings allow the determination of the crystal growth rate. When the antifreeze mass fraction is below 25 wt%,, crystallisation is clearly divided into two stages: the growth of dendritic crystals in the undercooled solution followed by the passage of the interdendritic solidification front. Dendrite growth induces a sudden temperature increase in the mixture, while the passage of the interdendritic solidification front determines the time at which sensible heat effects again predominate. The results show that the dendrite growth rate is an increasing function of the degree of undercooling and a decreasing function of the antifreeze mass fraction. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

The P[MTW] transposon carries a functional MtnA (metallothionein) gene and a miniwhite reporter gene. When P[MTW] was transformed into Drosophila, many lines were found to show position-dependent expression patterns of the miniwhite or the MtnA transgene. Identification of several of the target genes indicated that this construct behaves as an enhancer or silencer trap. For instance, expression of at least one reporter transgene was shown to correlate with that of the endogenous gene in the case of insertions in Ultrabithorax, four-jointed, and the iroquois complex. The frequency of patterns recovered with P[MTW] is higher than that reported for P[LacW], suggesting that P[MTW] has unusual properties. The possibility of biased insertion of P[MTW] was assayed by screening a sample of 66 MTW lines for modifiers of the extra sex comb phenotype caused by a hypomorphic allele of polyhomeotic. Seven modifiers were recovered, which could be ranked in two classes: genes involved in leg morphogenesis (including four-jointed and spitz), and genes of the Polycomb- or trithorax-Group, including trithorax and batman, a new gene which encodes a product with a BTB/POZ domain. Taken together, these results indicate that P[MTW] allows the tagging of patterning and cell determination genes, and thus provides a useful tool for identifying new developmental functions.

To compare the time course of endotracheal tube cuff pressures in presence of nitrous oxide (N2O), obtained in a tracheal model with those measured during clinical anaesthesia.Experimental and clinical prospective study.Twelve brands of low-pressure tracheal tubes.The pressure changes in the cuffs were measured over a three-hour-period in presence of a N2O (50 vol%)/O2 (50 vol%) mixture and mechanical ventilation, the tube being inserted either in a tracheal model or in the trachea of patients during general anaesthesia.The results obtained in vitro were correlated with those measured in the patients. Therefore the tracheal model is a helpful guide for the choice of endotracheal tubes.

Abstract

Intravascular malignant lymphomatosis (IML) is characterised by proliferation of tumoral cells within small vessels. Angiotropic large cell lymphoma commonly affects the central nervous system and the skin, although any organ may be involved. Few cases are diagnosed ante mortem. We report a new case of IML in a 62-year-old woman who presented with the main clinical features of central nervous system involvement: cerebrovascular events, epileptic seizures, subacute dementia and spinal cord syndrome. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated increased periventricular signal on T2-weighted images. Diagnosis was established by brain biopsy. Despite corticosteroid and radiation therapy no improvement occurred and the patient died 14 months after the onset of the first symptoms.

Abstract

Nitrate concentrations in streamwater of agricultural catchments often exhibit interannual variations, which are supposed to result from land-use changes, as well as seasonal variations mainly explained by the effect of hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. In catchments on impervious bedrock, seasonal variations of nitrate concentrations in streamwater are usually characterized by higher nitrate concentrations in winter than in summer. However, intermediate or inverse cycles with higher concentrations in summer are sometimes observed. An experimental study was carried out to assess the mechanisms that determine the seasonal cycles of streamwater nitrate concentrations in intensive agricultural catchments. Temporal and spatial patterns of groundwater concentrations were investigated in two adjacent catchments located in south-western Brittany (France), characterized by different seasonal variations of streamwater nitrate concentrations. Wells were drilled across the hillslope at depths ranging from 1·5 to 20 m. Dynamics of the water table were monitored and the groundwater nitrate and chloride concentrations were measured weekly over 2 years. Results highlighted that groundwater was partitioned into downslope domains, where denitrification induced lower nitrate concentrations than into mid-slope and upslope domains. For one catchment, high subsurface flow with high nitrate concentrations during high water periods and active denitrification during low water periods explained the higher streamwater nitrate concentrations in winter than in summer. For the other catchment, the high contribution of groundwater with high nitrate concentrations smoothed or inverted this trend. Increasing bromide/chloride ratio and nitrate concentrations with depth argued for an effect of past agricultural pressure on this catchment. The relative contribution of flows in time and correlatively the spatial origin of waters, function of the depth and the location on the hillslope, and their chemical characteristics control seasonal cycles of streamwater nitrate concentrations and can influence their interannual trends. Abstract

The authors recall the basic principles and advantages of the ring laser gyro (RLG) which is the most widely developed of all optical gyroscopes based on the Sagnac effect. The main error sources which can affect RLG performances are discussed, and among them gas flows in the active medium and frequency synchronisation of counterpropagating waves or 'lock-in'. Particular attention is given to locking phenomenon: the predominant influence of mirrors backscattering is emphasized and means devised to overcome this problem are explained. Some important design rules used in the RLG construction are defined. Two representative examples of RLG for different applications are described including the triaxial RLG in a single optical block.

Abstract

A detailed study of electron plasma waves observed upstream of the earth's bow shock and of their relationships to the position of the satellite in the foreshock and to the electron measurements has been carried out. The wave characteristics depend on the position in the electron foreshock: a narrow-bnd (a few percent) and intense (a few millivolts per meter) noise is observed at the plasma frequency at the edge of the foreshock while the spectrum widens (..delta..f/fapprox. =0.3) at the same time as the power decreases (hundreds of microvolts per meter) deeper (a few earth radii) inside the foreshock. Signals below the plasma frequency are also observed. These waves are polarized along the magnetic field, with long wavelengths below and at the plasma frequency and short wavelengths above it. They appear as short bursts, the duration of which depends on the frequency: longer close to the plasma frequency (50 ms), they shorten with increasing separation from the plasma frequency, the usual duration being 15 ms. While the correlation of the wave characteristics with the reflected electrons is good as the satellite moves inside the foreshock, no evolution is found with the distance to the bow shock, neither for the noisemore » nor for the particles. These results are discussed in the frame of various mechanisms which have been proposed to explain these upstream waves but no satisfactory agreement is found with any of them.« less

Abstract

Impoundments can drastically change the physical and biological characteristics of fluvial systems. Changes in the physical characteristics, such as reductions in flow, increased sediment deposition, and increased surface area, often influence the system’s biological components, including plant, macroinvertebrate, and fish assemblages. In addition to having direct effects on impounded waterbodies, impoundments can also have wide-ranging effects at the watershed scale, particularly on upstream tributary streams. The purpose of this study was to assess the magnitude of these effects. We analyzed historical data from 26 streams distributed across five sub-basins in the Bluff Hills region of the Yazoo Basin, MS, USA. All five major tributary rivers in this region are impounded by large (11,240–26,143 hectares) reservoirs for flood control. We compared fish assemblages in streams located upstream and downstream of the four reservoirs using PERMANOVA, and contrary to expectations, we found no significant differences between the upstream and downstream assemblages. We explore several possible explanations for this discrepancy and suggest that stream assemblage response to impoundment may be nuanced by the regional species pool, the history of stream conditions in the watershed, and the resistance of the streams to periodic disturbances.

Abstract

The profound influence of climate change on the hydrological cycle raises concerns about its potential impacts on water quality, particularly in agricultural catchments. Here, we analysed 200 storm events monitored for nitrate and total phosphorus (TP) at sub-hourly intervals from 2016 to 2023 in the Kervidy-Naizin catchment (north-western France). Using Extreme Value theory, we identified storm events with extreme concentrations and compared their hydroclimatic characteristics to those of non-extreme events. We hypothesised that extreme concentration events occurred under extreme hydroclimatic conditions, which are projected to become more frequent in the future. The extreme events identified showed dilution patterns for nitrate, with concentrations decreasing by up to 41 %, and accretion patterns for TP, with concentrations increasing by up to 1400 % compared to non-extreme events. Hydroclimatic conditions during extreme concentration events were characterised by high rainfall intensities and low antecedent discharge, but no particular conditions for mean discharge. During non-extreme events, nitrate concentration-discharge relationships exhibited primarily clockwise hysteresis, whereas TP displayed an equal mix of clockwise and anticlockwise loops. In contrast, extreme events showed more anticlockwise hysteresis for nitrate and weak hysteresis for TP. We interpreted these dynamics and their hydroclimatic controls as the result of infiltration-excess overland flow diluting nitrate-rich groundwater and exporting large amounts of TP during intensive rainfall events following droughts, while groundwater fluctuations in the riparian zone and streambed remobilization control nutrient exports during non-extreme events. Abstract

Recently developed measurement technologies can monitor surface water quality almost continuously, creating high-frequency multiparameter time series and raising the question of how best to extract insights from such rich data sets. Here we use spectral analysis to characterize the variability of water quality at the AgrHys observatory (Western France) over time scales ranging from 20 min to 12 years. Three years of daily sampling at the intensively farmed Kervidy-Naizin watershed reveal universal 1/f scaling for all 36 solutes, yielding spectral slopes of 1.05 ± 0.11 (mean ± standard deviation). These 36 solute concentrations show varying degrees of annual cycling, suggesting different controls on watershed export processes. Twelve years of daily samples of SO4, NO3, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) show that 1/f scaling does not continue at frequencies below 1/year in those constituents, whereas a 12-year daily record of Cl shows a general 1/f trend down to the lowest measurable frequencies. Conversely, approximately 12 months of 20 min NO3 and DOC measurements show that at frequencies higher than 1/day, the spectra of these solutes steepen to slopes of roughly 3, and at time scales shorter than 2-3 h, the spectra flatten to slopes near zero, reflecting analytical noise. These results confirm and extend the recent discovery of universal fractal 1/f scaling in water quality at the relatively pristine Plynlimon watershed in Wales, further demonstrating the importance of advective-dispersive transport mixing in catchments. However, the steeper scaling at subdaily time scales suggests additional short-term damping of solute concentrations, potentially due to in-stream or riparian processes.

Abstract

Background: Invasive aspergillosis is an opportunistic infection that occurs mainly among patients with prolonged neutropenia. Few data are available on invasive aspergillosis in nonneutropenic patients., Methods: The aim of this survey was to compare neutropenic and nonneutropenic patients who had received a diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis at our institution during a 6-year period., Results: Among the 88 cases of invasive aspergillosis analyzed here, 12 were histologically proven, 52 were probable, and 24 were possible. Forty-seven percent of cases were diagnosed in the intensive care unit, and 40% were diagnosed in hematology units. Neutropenia was a risk factor for 52 patients (59%), most of whom had hematological or solid malignancies. Among the 36 nonneutropenic patients (41%), the main underlying conditions were steroid-treated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, giant-cell arteritis, and microvascular disorders; 10 patients were recipients of solid-organ transplants, and 1 patient was seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus. The distribution of proven and probable invasive aspergillosis was similar for neutropenic and nonneutropenic patients. The mortality rate was 71.5% overall and was significantly higher among nonneutropenic patients than among neutropenic patients (89% vs. 60%; P<.05). Compared with neutropenic patients, nonneutropenic patients were significantly less likely to have symptoms of invasive aspergillosis and more likely to have frequent intercurrent pneumonia due to another microorganism. The sensitivity of mycological examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid specimens was higher for nonneutropenic patients than for neutropenic patients (85% vs. 58%; P<.05), whereas the sensitivity of antigenemia was the same for the 2 populations (65% vs. 64%). Findings on thoracic computed tomographs were similar, except that segmental areas of consolidation occurred more frequently among neutropenic patients., Conclusion: This survey at a whole institution underlines the high number of cases of invasive aspergillosis among nonneutropenic patients, with an overall mortality rate that was significantly higher than that for neutropenic patients.

Abstract

Polycomb and trithorax group genes maintain the appropriate repressed or activated state of homeotic gene expression throughout Drosophila melanogaster development. We have previously identified the batman gene as a Polycomb group candidate since its function is necessary for the repression of Sex combs reduced. However, our present genetic analysis indicates functions of batman in both activation and repression of homeotic genes. The 127-amino-acid Batman protein is almost reduced to a BTB/POZ domain, an evolutionary conserved protein-protein interaction domain found in a large protein family. We show that this domain is involved in the interaction between Batman and the DNA binding GAGA factor encoded by the Trithorax-like gene. The GAGA factor and Batman codistribute on polytene chromosomes, coimmunoprecipitate from nuclear embryonic and larval extracts, and interact in the yeast two-hybrid assay. Batman, together with the GAGA factor, binds to MHS-70, a 70-bp fragment of the bithoraxoid Polycomb response element. This binding, like that of the GAGA factor, requires the presence of d(GA)n sequences. Together, our results suggest that batman belongs to a subset of the Polycomb/trithorax group of genes that includes Trithorax-like, whose products are involved in both activation and repression of homeotic genes.

Abstract

Polyhomeotic is a member of the Polycomb group of genes. The products of this group are chromatin-associated proteins that act together as multimeric complexes. These proteins are required for the maintenance of target gene repression in a permanent and heritable manner during development. In order to better understand the dynamics of their action during development, we generated transgenic flies expressing a polyhomeotic protein tagged with the enhanced green fluorescent protein. Here we show that this fusion protein (PH-EGFP) retains both the functional properties of the endogenous protein and its target specificity on polytene chromosomes. The distribution of the PH-EGFP protein is partly dependent on the presence of wildtype Polycomb protein, indicating that PH-EGFP behaves as does the wildtype PH protein. Therefore, the PH-EGFP chimera appears to be an appropriate reporter of PH protein distribution and a suitable tool for the study of Polycomb-group complex assembly in vivo. The subnuclear distribution of PH-EGFP is dynamic throughout development. In the interphase nucleus at the cellular blastoderm, a diffuse granular pattern is observed. From the early gastrula stage onward, a few brighter dots appear. As development progressed from germ band retraction through hatching of the larva, numerous discrete dots accumulate in the nucleus of epidermal cells. The increasing number of dots observed during development may indicate that PH-EGFP is recruited at different stages on different target sites, a result that is in good agreement with functional data previously reported.

Abstract

The P[MTW] transposon carries a functional MtnA (metallothionein) gene and a miniwhite reporter gene. When P[MTW] was transformed into Drosophila, many lines were found to show position-dependent expression patterns of the miniwhite or the MtnA transgene. Identification of several of the target genes indicated that this construct behaves as an enhancer or silencer trap. For instance, expression of at least one reporter transgene was shown to correlate with that of the endogenous gene in the case of insertions in Ultrabithorax, four-jointed, and the iroquois complex. The frequency of patterns recovered with P[MTW] is higher than that reported for P[LacW], suggesting that P[MTW] has unusual properties. The possibility of biased insertion of P[MTW] was assayed by screening a sample of 66 MTW lines for modifiers of the extra sex comb phenotype caused by a hypomorphic allele of polyhomeotic. Seven modifiers were recovered, which could be ranked in two classes: genes involved in leg morphogenesis (including four-jointed and spitz), and genes of the Polycomb- or trithorax-Group, including trithorax and batman, a new gene which encodes a product with a BTB/POZ domain. Taken together, these results indicate that P[MTW] allows the tagging of patterning and cell determination genes, and thus provides a useful tool for identifying new developmental functions.

Background and Objective: Selective dermal remodeling consists of inducing collagen tightening, neocollagen synthesis, or both, without damage to the overlying epidermis. This experimental study aimed to evaluate an Er:Glass laser emitting at 1.54 micrometer combined with contact cooling to target the upper dermis while protecting the epidermis., Study Design/materials and Methods: Male hairless rats were used for the study. Different fluences (26-30 J/cm(2)) by using single 3-ms pulse irradiation or pulse train irradiation (1.1 J, 3 Hz) and different cooling temperatures (+5 degrees C, 0 degrees C, -5 degrees C) were screened with clinical examination and histologic evaluation at 1, 3, and 7 days after laser irradiation., Results: The clinical effects were clearly dose and temperature cooling dependent. It seemed that single pulse irradiation led to epidermal whitening in most cases, whatever the cooling temperature. Conversely, pulse train irradiation showed reproducible epidermal preservation and confinement of the thermal damage into the dermis. New collagen synthesis was confirmed by a marked fibroblastic proliferation, detected in the lower dermis at day 3 and clearly seen in the upper dermis at day 7., Conclusion: This new laser seems to be a promising new tool for the treatment of skin laxity, solar elastosis, facial rhytides, and mild reduction of wrinkles., (Copyright 2000 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

48. Observation of pressure-induced nonreciprocity in a ring four-wave-mixing oscillator: application to optical gyros.

Abstract

We have studied the four-wave-mixing oscillation obtained when a cell containing sodium and a buffer gas is enclosed in a ring cavity. The beat frequency Deltanu between the two counterrotating beams is shown to depend on the intensity difference (I(1) - I(2)) between the two pump beams. The curve giving Deltanu as a function of (I(1) - I(2)) is a gyrotype curve, which suggests some possible application for optical gyros.
