Abstract

Within the European Union, infectious cattle diseases are categorized in the Animal Health Law. No strict EU regulations exist for control, evidence of disease freedom, and surveillance of diseases listed other than categories A and B. Consequently, EU member states follow their own varying strategies for disease control. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the control and eradication programs (CPs) for six cattle diseases in the Netherlands between 2009 and 2019 and to highlight characteristics specific to the Dutch situation. All of these diseases were listed as C,D or E in the New Animal Health Law. In the Netherlands, CPs are in place for six endemic cattle diseases: bovine viral diarrhea, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, salmonellosis, paratuberculosis, leptospirosis, and neosporosis. These CPs have been tailored to the specific situation in the Netherlands: a country with a high cattle density, a high rate of animal movements, a strong dependence on export of dairy products, and a high-quality data-infrastructure. The latter specifically applies to the dairy sector, which is the leading cattle sector in the Netherlands. When a herd enters a CP, generally the within-herd prevalence of infection is estimated in an initial assessment. The outcome creates awareness of the infection status of a herd and also provides an indication of the costs and time to achieve the preferred herd status. Subsequently, the herd enrolls in the control phase of the CP to, if present, eliminate the infection from a herd and a surveillance phase to substantiate the free or low prevalence status over time. The high-quality data infrastructure that results in complete and centrally registered census data on cattle movements provides the opportunity to design CPs while minimizing administrative efforts for the farmer. In the CPs, mostly routinely collected samples are used for surveillance. Where possible, requests for proof of the herd status are sent automatically. Automated detection of risk factors for introduction of new animals originating from a herd without the preferred herd status i.e., free or unsuspected, is in place using centrally registered data. The presented overview may inspire countries that want to develop cost-effective CPs for endemic diseases that are not (yet) regulated at EU level.

Abstract

Stochastic simulation models are widely accepted as a means of assessing the impact of changes in daily management and the control of different diseases, such as paratuberculosis, in dairy herds. This paper summarises and discusses the assumptions of four stochastic simulation models and their use in the design of certification, surveillance, and control strategies for paratuberculosis in cattle herds. A detailed comparison is made between the Dutch JohneSSim and the Danish PTB-Simherd, using the same context of a set of control strategies in a typical Dutch/Danish herd. The conclusion is that while the models are somewhat different in their underlying principles and do put slightly different values on the different strategies, their overall findings are similar. Therefore, simulation models may be useful in planning paratuberculosis strategies in dairy herds, although as with all models caution is warranted when interpreting and generalising the results.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the (radiative) decay Jψ→e+e−γ. Our data are from an experiment in which Jψ is formed in antiproton-proton annihilations. The observed rate is consistent with a QED calculation based on final state radiation. Our measurement gives a branching ratio for this mode of (8.8±1.3±0.4)×10−3 for γ energy>100 MeV.

Abstract

We report on a study of the angular distribution in the reaction $\overline{p}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Using a sample of 1904 events, we find that the contribution of helicity zero in the formation process is ${B}_{0}^{2}l0.22$ (90% C.L.), and that the normalized quadrupole amplitude in the radiative decay is ${a}_{2}=\ensuremath{-}0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06$. The normalized radiative decay octupole amplitude ${a}_{3}$ is found to be consistent with zero.

Abstract

We present measurements of the 2π0 mass spectrum in proton—antiproton annihilations. The f2 (1520) resonance is strongly produced in the 3π0 channel. Its production along with an η is observed, but strongly suppressed. Other features are seen in the data, including the f2 (1270) and structures at 2000 MeV/c2 and above.

Abstract

The E760 Collaboration has studied the reaction [ital [bar p]p][r arrow][chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma] using a hydrogen gas jet target in the Fermilab antiproton acumulator ring. The following values are obtained for the branching ratio and partial width to two photons; [ital B]([chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma])=(1.60[plus minus]0.45)[times]10[sup [minus]4] and [Gamma]([chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma])=321[plus minus]95 eV.

Abstract

We report new measurements for the mass, width, and branching ratios for the [ital J]/[psi] and the [psi][prime]. These charmonium states are formed exclusively in [ital [bar p]p] annihilations at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator ring, where stochastically cooled antiprotons are brought into collision with the protons of an in- ternal hydrogen gas jet target. The antiproton energy is precisely controlled and measured allowing an accurate measurement of the resonance parameters. From the shape of the excitation curves we find that the widths of [ital J]/[psi] and [psi][prime] are [Gamma]([ital J]/[psi])=99[plus minus]12[plus minus]6 keV and [Gamma]([psi][prime])=306[plus minus]36[plus minus]16 keV, and that the mass of the [ital J]/[psi] is 3096.87[plus minus]0.03[plus minus]0.03 MeV/[ital c][sup 2]. For the [ital J]/[psi] we obtain [ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital [bar p]p])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]]) =(1.14[sup +0.16][sub [minus]0.12][plus minus]0.10)[times]10[sup [minus]4]; for the [psi][prime] we obtain [ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital [bar p]p])[[ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]]) +[ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital J]/[psi][ital X])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]])] =(1.17[sub [minus]0.12][sup +0.14][plus minus]0.08)[times]10[sup [minus]5].

Abstract

Integrated control of bovine virus diarrhoea virus, bovine herpesvirus-1, Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo subtype hardjobovis, Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis, and Salmonella dublin in dairy herds may provide economic benefits superior to those obtained by sequential disease control, because, among other things, it allows optimization of voluntary culling. However, in practice there are no adequate instruments to establish priorities in voluntary culling. Therefore, in this study the priorities in decision-making for voluntary culling of infected cattle, as indicated by more than 300 cattle veterinarians, were analysed. Based on our results and supplementary considerations, the priorities for voluntary culling in the Netherlands can be ranked as: 1st. cull S. dublin carriers, 2nd. cull persistently infected BVDV carriers, 3rd. cull paratuberculosis faecal culture positive cattle and their last offspring, 4th. cull, in paratuberculosis infected herds, paratuberculosis ELISA positive cattle and their last offspring and cull, in low prevalence herds, BHV1 gE-positive cattle, and 5th. cull leptospirosis seropositive cattle. Since this ranking was based on one case study only, other priorities may prevail in other herds.

Abstract

We present the first high-statistics study of the ηη system over the mass range 1000–3000 MeV/c2. The experiment was performed at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator, and the data sample consists of six-photon final states produced in antiproton-proton annihilations at s in the range 2950–3620 MeV. We find evidence for three states with masses 1488 ± 10 MeV/c2, 1748 ± 10 MeV/c2 and 2104 ± 20 MeV/c2 respectively.

Abstract

Fermilab experiment E-760 has confirmed the f2(1520) state in the 3πo final state in antiproton-proton annihilations in-flight (~3.0 to 3.6 GeV c.m. energy), seen previously by Crystal Barrel and other groups at CERN at rest. The f2(1520) is also seen in its 2πo decay mode in the 2πoη channel and 2η decay mode in the πo2η channel. There are indications of this state in the 3η decay channel. The invariant mass spectrum is rich in states near 2 GeV, and amplitude and spin/parity analysis of the Dalitz plot is in progress in this mass region.

Abstract

E760 is a fixed target experiment dedicated to the study of charmonium spectroscopy in pp annihilations. Results on X1 and X2 resonance parameters from 1990 data taking are presented, consisting of precise measurement of mass, total width and partial width to pp. A preliminary result is presented on the first direct determination of ϱ' width from line shape analysis.

Abstract

We report on a study of the χ 1 ( 3 P 1 ) and χ 2 ( 3 P 2 ) states of charmonium formed in antiproton-proton annihilations. An energy scan through the resonances, performed with a very narrow momentum-band beam of antiprotons intersecting a hydrogen jet target, enables us to perform very precise measurements of the mass and the total width of the two resonances. From a sample of 513 χ1 and 585 χ2 events we find Mχ1 = (3510.53±0.13) MeV/c2, Mχ2 = (3556.15±0.14) MeV/c2, Γχ1 = (0.88±0.14) MeV and Γχ2 = (1.98±0.18) MeV. From our measurement of the quantity Γ( R → p p ) × BR(R → J ψ → e + e − ) , using known branching ratios, we obtain Λ(χ 1 → p p) = (69±13) eV and Λ(χ 2 → p p) = (180±31) eV .

20. Chronic exposure to a simulated urban profile of ozone alters ventilatory responses to carbon dioxide challenge in rats

Abstract

Male Fischer 344 rats were exposed to a simulated urban profile of ozone (O3) (9-hr ramped spike, integrated concentration = 0.19 ppm) for up to 78 weeks. Small, but statistically significant, changes in breathing patterns and mechanics in unanesthetized, restrained rats were observed at Weeks 1, 3, 13, 52, and 78 during postexposure challenge with 0, 4, and 8% carbon dioxide (CO2). The data indicate that O3 exposure caused an overall increase in expiratory resistance (Rc), but particularly at 78 weeks. This increase in Rc most likely accounts for the rats' reduced ability to increase ventilation during CO2 challenge compared to control rats. Reductions in CO2-induced tidal volume increases were observed in all O3-exposed animals during postexposure challenges to 4 and 8% CO2. Cumulatively, over all time points, spontaneous frequency of breathing and CO2-induced hyperventilation were also reduced. The decrease in frequency was dependent on a significant increase in the inspiratory time relative to control without a change in expiratory time. Light microscopic evaluation of the lung did not reveal any lesions associated with O3 exposure at any time point. Although statistically significant effects were detected, the etiology of the above-mentioned functional changes remains speculative. The potential relevance of these data to acute and chronic O3 exposure in humans is also discussed.

21. Histamine and methacholine aerosol bronchial challenge in awake guinea pigs

Abstract

Cardiopulmonary responses to histamine and methacholine aerosol challenge were examined and compared in unanesthetized spontaneously breathing guinea pigs. All animals had surgically implanted intrapleural catheters and some had arterial or right heart catheters as well. Animals were placed in plethysmographs and exposed to ascending doses of aerosolized agonists. The provocative dose, i.e., the dose that caused a clear bronchospastic response, was defined as the concentration that increased intrapleural pressure to at least 20 cm H2O. Results showed that bronchospasm was characterized further by decreases in dynamic lung compliance and arterial PO2 and an increase in airway resistance. The accumulation of trapped gas in the lung, after challenge, measured in the excised collapsed lung correlated with the increase in intrapleural pressure and with the fall in lung compliance. Male guinea pigs between 3- and 15-weeks of age did not vary in sensitivity to histamine. Methacholine and histamine were equipotent and produced similar responses. Tachyphylaxis was not demonstrated for either compound. In addition, the provocative dose for the drugs remained stable on a day-to-day basis. These results offer insight into the nature of the bronchospastic response in guinea pigs and provide new data on response to methacholine.

Abstract

Results are reported concerning the charged-particle multiplicity distribution obtained in an exposure of the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC to a beam of 800 GeV protons at the Fermilab MPS. This is the first time that such data have been available at this energy. The distribution of the number n ch of charged particles produced in inelastic interactions obeys KNO-scaling. The average multiplicity is 〈 n ch 〉 = 10.26±0.15. For n ch ⩾8 the data can be well fitted to a negative binomial. The difference between the overall experimental multiplicity distribution and that resulting from the latter fit is in agreement with the contribution expected from diffractive processes.

Abstract

we have studied the effects of intrinsic layer dopant profiles on the open circuit voltage and fill factor of p-i-n and n-i-p solar cells. Data is presented showing that boron profiling into the i-layer is responsible for the commonly observed difference in open circuit voltage between p-i-n and n-i-p devices. As only a shallow profile is required to produce this effect, it is proposed that the lower Voc samples are being limited by surface recombination at the p/i interface and that the boron profile reduces this recombination current. The fill factor for devices illuminated through the n+ layer is shown to be very sensitive to the depth of a boron profile, yet not so sensitive to the profile concentration. A maximum occurs for a profile penetrating slightly more than half way through the cell. Spectral response data clearly shows a shifting of high collection from the back to the front of the cell.

27. Assessment Of Contamination In The Shuttle Bay

Abstract

The results of an analytical study to determine the contamination potential of the Galileo probe instruments while in the STS bay are presented. The study covered conditions wherein the instruments weren't covered, covers were used with vent paths of varying sizes, and if the instruments were sealed and a nitrogen purge was employed. The contamination limits for each of the Galileo instruments are considered. Analytic approximations are devised for the diffusion of particles from surfaces and materials in the Shuttle bay during the ascent phase, using Fick's second law of diffusion. It is recommended that an instrument purge be implemented during the first 15 min of Shuttle flight in order to carry the contaminants from both the bay fixtures and from the instruments into space. Covers are suggested as necessary for the most sensitive instruments.

Abstract

Differential cross sections for p p elastic scattering have been measured for very small momentum transfers at six different incident antiproton momenta in the range 3.7 to 6.2 GeV/c by the detection of recoil protons at scattering angles close to 90°. Forward scattering parameters σ T , b , and ϱ have been determined. For the ϱ-parameter, up to an order of magnitude higher level of precision has been achieved compared to that in earlier experiments. It is found that existing dispersion theory predictions are in disagreement with our results for the ϱ-parameter.
