The flow path of a river draining a lowland in the southern Baltic Sea, the Warnow River, was investigated to evaluate its freshwater composition as a source of dissolved substances to regional coastal waters. A spatial study was carried out once to follow the variations from the source to the estuary. A temporal study in the composition as a function of the season, during 6 years (2017-2022), was carried out at a site just before the river reaches the estuary. Surface water was sampled to analyze major and tracer elements, stable (H, C, O, S), and unstable (Ra) isotopes. The results show that the composition of the Warnow River along the flow path is controlled by a complex interplay between in-situ processes, exchange with the atmosphere, diffuse groundwater, and surface water inlets. On a temporal scale, pH, nutrient, and redox sensitive trace element concentrations are strongly impacted by pelagic primary production in spring. During summer and autumn, influences occurred by benthic microbial activity, associated diffusive release from soils/sediments, and surface water inlets. Throughout the investigation period, the Warnow River was a source of isotopically light CO2 to the atmosphere and DIC to the estuarine waters. The delivered DIC concentrations seem to vary with the season due to changes in biological pelagic and benthic activity. DOC was derived from a mixture of C3 organic sources and fertilizers. From concentration-discharge relationships, examples of dilution, mobilization, and chemostasis trends were found. Discharge-controlled seasonal trends are superimposed by system-internal processes and the hydrological consequences of river and drainage management. Our analysis thus provides new insights into the controls on the variations of water and solutes in a managed river at the land-sea interface as part of the regional hydrological cycle of a lowland catchment coastal water system. Biogeochemical processes and microbial community structure were investigated in sediment cores from three pockmarks in Hanko, Finland, in the northern Baltic Sea, and compared to groundwater and seawater measurements. Three studied pockmarks varied with the rate of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Based on e.g., chloride and DIC concentrations from sediment porewaters, pockmark D had the strongest groundwater influence, while in pockmark E SGD had ceased and therefore this pockmark resembled typical Baltic Sea water and sediment. The pockmark B was the intermediate representative of SGD. The inactive pockmark E had orders of magnitude higher methane concentrations compared to the active pockmarks, but interestingly, this did not reflect on the copy numbers of methanogenesis marker gene (mcrA) results, as pockmark B had equal methanogenesis gene pool as the pockmark E. Sulfate reducer numbers measured with dsrB marker gene was highest in pockmark E sample but also many orders of magnitude higher in other pockmark sediments compared to seawater and groundwater, where the sulfate reducer numbers were only negligible. Reactive transport modeling (RTM) established that the porewater systems in pockmarks D and B were dominated by groundwater advection pushing reactants for biogeochemical reaction into a narrow zone at sediment surface. The advection reduced the organic matter accumulation which results in absence of sulfate-methane transition zone in these pockmarks and concentrates the microbial activity to these habitats. Microbial community structure revealed with phylogenetic marker gene amplicon sequencing reflects the groundwater in active pockmarks, as notable populations of ammonia-oxidizing archaea and nitrifying bacteria in pockmarks are mainly originating from groundwater. RTM also estimated low rates of sulfate consumption and low rates of methane, ammonium and DIC in the active pockmarks.

Introduction The Optilume Urethral Drug Coated Balloon (DCB) is a novel endoscopic treatment for recurrent male anterior urethral strictures. An important topic of discussion with patients during counseling on treatment options includes the potential affect of treatment on sexual function and fertility. The ROBUST III study was a prospective, randomized study comparing standard of care endoscopic therapy against treatment with the Optilume DCB. Assessments included evaluation of sexual function and andrology parameters. Objective The objective was to study the potential affect of treatment with the Optilume DCB on sexual function and, for younger patients, fertility. Methods A total of 79 men were randomized to receive treatment with the Optilume DCB. Sexual function was assessed via the 15 item International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire. Erectile function, orgasmic function, and overall satisfaction sub-domains were assessed at 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment in patients that were sexually active at baseline. Fifteen additional subjects were enrolled in a non-randomized pharmacokinetic sub-study that included assessments of paclitaxel concentration in semen and sperm quality parameters through 6 months post-treatment. Results Average erectile function and overall satisfaction scores improved from baseline to 12 months post-treatment, while orgasmic function was not changed (Figure). The improvement in satisfaction was statistically significant at 12 months (p=0.003). No adverse events of de novo erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction were reported. Average ejaculate sperm concentration did not change from baseline to 6 months (49 million/mL vs 46.6 million/mL, p=0.88), nor did total spermatozoa per ejaculate (107.2 million vs 104.0 million, p=0.94). Paclitaxel concentration in semen after treatment was maximal at 30 days (2.99 ng/mL) and was reduced near the limit of quantitation of the analytical method by 6 months (0.12 ng/mL). Conclusions Treatment of male anterior urethral strictures with the Optilume DCB did not appear to have an impact on sexual function as measured by the IIEF and adverse event assessments. Average sperm quality parameters did not differ from baseline to 6 months post-treatment. Low levels of paclitaxel were detected in semen after treatment but were nearly undetectable by 6 months. Objective: Heightened pain sensitivity is common in functional gut disorders, but no research has examined whether it corresponds to exercise-associated gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. We sought to explore whether scores on a questionnaire of pain sensitivity would correlate with GI symptoms during running. Design: This is a cross-sectional study. Subjects: The study involves 290 (137 male, 153 female) distance runners. Methods: Runners completed a survey inquiring about demographic, anthropometric and training information and rated GI symptoms at rest and during runs. In addition, the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire (PSQ) was used to quantify pain sensitivity across all items (PSQ-Total) and on items typically rated as minor (PSQ-Minor). Spearman rho correlations were utilized to assess the associations between pain sensitivity and GI symptoms. Partial correlations were used to evaluate the associations after controlling for age, gender, running experience, body mass index and sleep problems. Results: PSQ scores weakly correlated with several GI symptoms at rest (rho = 0.13–0.20; p Conclusions: Although PSQ scores only weakly correlate with certain GI symptoms among runners, the effect sizes are similar to that of other predictors of GI distress. These results suggest a minor possible role of pain sensitivity in the development of certain GI symptoms in runners.

Land-ocean interactions in the coastal zone are of particular interest regarding the exchange of substances, like nutrients, carbon, sulfur, metals, and water. The rising sea level is and will enhance the pressure of salty solutions on previously fresh water ecosystems. We present here new results on the isotope biogeochemistry of a rewetted peatland, at the southern Baltic Sea, that is impacted by event-type flooding with brackish seawater. Sediment cores on transects through the wetland were investigated for their pore water and solid phase (mineral and organic matter) composition. Different fractions of the soils and solutions were analyzed for the elemental composition, mineral micro-textures, and the stable isotope composition (H, C, O, S) to understand the changes in water and biogeochemical carbon-sulfur-metal cycles due to flooding and the consequence for the development of sulfur isotope signatures in authigenic mineral phases and organic matter.Flooding events with brackish water increased the availability of sulfate as an electron acceptor for microbial carbon transformations. This added sulfur impacted the remineralization capacity of organic substrates and created space for mineral authigenesis, with related iron sulfide textures. It yields isotope signals that are indicative for non-steady state biogeochemistry of coastal ecosystems and allow for a transfer of proxy information to other modern and past coastal organic-rich peatlands.The soil cores from the peatland reflects the intense activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria and the associated formation of iron sulfides (essentially pyrite) and provided the isotope evidence for site-dependent sulfurization of organic matter. Sedimentary sulfur fractions and their stable isotope signatures are controlled by the availability of dissolved organic matter and/or methane, reactive iron, and in particular dissolved sulfate and, thereby, from the relative position with respect to the coast line, and depend on the surface topography and soil characteristics. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the associations between several psychological factors (stress, anxiety, body vigilance, and visceral sensitivity) and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in runners, as well as whether any of these factors impact pre-exercise and during-exercise fueling. Methods A virtual/online observational survey-based study with 82 (43 male and 39 female) runners was conducted. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)-14, State-Trait Inventory for Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety (STICSA-Trait), Body Vigilance Scale (BVS), and Visceral Sensitivity Index (VSI) were assessed. GI symptoms during runs over 1 week, as well as nutrient intakes from food and fluid consumed 4 h before and during runs, were recorded. GI problems were quantified as the percentage of runs that a participant reported at least one symptom ≥ 3 out of 10. Results VSI scores significantly correlated with the occurrence of all, upper, and lower GI symptoms during runs (ρ = 0.32–0.38; p Conclusions Runners’ visceral sensitivity levels associate with GI symptoms during training over a week, but the impact of this and other psychological factors on nutritional intake is uncertain, particularly around competition.

J Strength Cond Res 33(3): 819-824, 2019-The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (YYIR1) has been shown to be a reliable test with strong correlations to physical match performance in field soccer players. However, the YYIR1 has less goalkeeper (GK) specificity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the test-retest reliability of a goalkeeper-specific adaptation of the YYIR1 (YYIR1-GK). Sixteen National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) collegiate GKs (8 men and 8 women) performed the YYIR1-GK test twice (4 and7 days apart) to determine its reliability and variability. Subjects were tested at the same time of day and in a controlled indoor environment. Heart rate using polar monitors and rating of perceived exertion were obtained at the end of each stage of the YYIR1-GK. Test-retest reliability for each test was assessed by Pearson correlations, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and coefficient of variation (CV). The YYIR1-GK was shown to have a strong test-retest reliability and low variability for male (r = 0.981, ICC = 0.980, CV = 5.82%) and female (r = 0.969, ICC = 0.956, CV = 9.60%) NCAA GKs, respectively. Male GKs performed significantly more stages and therein covered a greater distance in the YYIR1-GK than the female GKs (p = 0.05). This study suggests that the YYIR1-GK is a consistent assessment of intermittent fitness with high test-retest reliability and low variability in male and female NCAA GKs. It is suggested that larger numbers of GKs of various skill levels be evaluated in the future.

INTRODUCTION: Fatigue is a common problem in aviation. The identification of efficacious fatigue countermeasures is crucial for sustaining flight performance during fatigue-inducing operations. Stimulants are not recommended for consistent use, but are often implemented during flight operations with a high risk of fatigue. As such, it is important to evaluate the efficacy of approved stimulants for sustaining flight performance, alertness, and mood.METHODS: Four electronic databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science) were systematically searched to identify research on the effects of caffeine, dextroamphetamine, and modafinil during simulated or in-flight operations.RESULTS: There were 12 studies identified that assessed the effects of at least 1 stimulant. Overall, dextroamphetamine and modafinil were effective for sustaining flight performance and pilot mood during extended wakefulness. Results with caffeine were inconsistent.DISCUSSION: Dextroamphetamine and modafinil appear to sustain flight performance and mood during extended wakefulness. However, most studies have used flight simulators and short operation durations. Additional research is needed in realistic settings and during longer duration operations. Caffeines effects were inconsistent across studies, possibly due to differences in study methodology or individual caffeine responses. Despite fatigue being a common problem in civilian aviation as well, only one study in this review included civil aviators. More research should be conducted on the effects of caffeine during civil operations.CONCLUSION: Dextroamphetamine and modafinil appear to be effective fatigue countermeasures but should be further evaluated in more ecologically valid settings. Background: Identity research in engineering education has been expanding to include multiple forms of measurement. While a variety of approaches have successfully contributed to our understanding of identity, mixed method approaches have been utilized minimally in identity research. Therefore, additional insight on the implications and affordances of mixed method approaches for identity research is needed. Purpose: Our work explored undergraduate engineering students’ researcher identity using a fully integrated mixed method approach by interweaving deductive (quantitative) and inductive (qualitative) strands of survey and interview data. We aimed to answer the research question: How can quantitative and qualitative data approaches be used in combination to explore how students conceptualize their researcher identity? Method: The data included responses from 20 undergraduate mechanical and biomedical engineering students representing six different institutions. Students completed surveys, and their survey responses served as a foundation for subsequent interviews. Both the survey and interview contained an identical item (a single anchored scale measure of researcher identity), which directly connected the two data sets. While the survey data was used during the interviews, analysis of the strands was initially separate but concurrent. Results: After initial analysis, mixing the data provided two key opportunities to attain a deep understanding of participants’ researcher identity. The anchored scale provided a platform to discuss researcher identity with participants and allowed us to look within and across participants’ experiences in unexpected ways. Our discoveries of how individual students’ conceptualizations of the identity being measured varied and how those conceptualizations changed over time were only possible through the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. Conclusions: Our fully integrated mixed method approach resulted in a more complete understanding of students’ researcher identities, allowing us to extend our theoretical understanding beyond what would have been possible with either method alone. Researchers exploring complex topics that can be fluid and affected by time and experience, such as identity, may benefit from integrating a similar approach into their research protocols.

Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$$_{\gamma ^{\mathrm {D}}}$$ γ D and its mixing parameter with the photon, $$\varepsilon $$ ε . The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$$_{\gamma ^{\mathrm {D}}}$$ γ D ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$$ - 0.5 + 0.2 GeV, and $$\varepsilon ^2$$ ε 2 ranging between $$10^{-11}$$ 10 - 11 and $$10^{-17}$$ 10 - 17 .

Clubhead speed (CHS) is a commonly assessed golf performance measure and has been demonstrated to increase in response to physical training. Knowledge of the physical attributes that correlate with CHS will aid in developing effective testing and training protocols for golfers. Thus, the purpose of this review was to identify studies that evaluated the correlation between physical attributes and CHS and synthesise the correlation coefficients using three-level meta-analytic methods. Physical attributes were categorised first by general physical attribute categories. Pooled correlations were also estimated for specific attributes (e.g. jump height, body mass) that were evaluated across three or more studies. Athletes are often told to minimize intakes of fiber, fat, and protein in pre-competition meals to avoid gut distress, but this guidance is based on scant direct evidence. This study evaluated the physiological and perceptual effects of pre-competition mixed-macronutrient (MM) and high-carbohydrate (HCHO) meals in collegiate female soccer players.Fifteen players participated in this randomized, investigator-blinded, crossover study involving two ~ 1000-kcal meals (HCHO and MM) consumed 4 h prior to 70-min scrimmages. Assessments included global positioning system (GPS) tracking, heart rate (HR), perceived exertion (RPE), ratings of fatigue (ROF), gut symptoms, and perceptions of satiety, hunger, and fullness. Differences between conditions for HR, RPE, ROF, and gut symptoms were evaluated with Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. GPS data and hunger, satiety, and fullness scores were compared using within-subjects repeated measures ANOVAs.No statistically significant differences were found between the conditions at any time point for HR, RPE, ROF, or gut symptoms. Significant time effects were found for two GPS variables (total distance covered and high-speed running), indicating that participants covered less distance during the second half of the scrimmages in comparison to the first half. However, there were no significant condition or condition × time interactions for GPS data. Finally, there were no condition or condition × time interactions for hunger, fullness, and satiety, though significant time effects were observed.A MM meal consumed 4 h prior to 70 min of soccer competition does not increase gut symptoms and can be similarly ergogenic as a HCHO meal.

Caffeine ingestion can improve performance across a variety of exercise modalities but can also elicit negative side effects in some individuals. Thus, there is a growing interest in the use of caffeine mouth rinse solutions to improve sport and exercise performance while minimizing caffeine’s potentially adverse effects. Mouth rinse protocols involve swilling a solution within the oral cavity for a short time (e.g., 5–10 s) before expectorating it to avoid systemic absorption. This is believed to improve performance via activation of taste receptors and stimulation of the central nervous system. Although reviews of the literature indicate that carbohydrate mouth rinsing can improve exercise performance in some situations, there has been no attempt to systematically review the available literature on caffeine mouth rinsing and its effects on exercise performance. To fill this gap, a systematic literature search of three databases (PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science) was conducted by two independent reviewers. The search resulted in 11 randomized crossover studies that were appraised and reviewed. Three studies found significant positive effects of caffeine mouth rinsing on exercise performance, whereas the remaining eight found no improvements or only suggestive benefits. The mixed results may be due to heterogeneity in the methods across studies, interindividual differences in bitter tasting, and differences in the concentrations of caffeine solutions. Future studies should evaluate how manipulating the concentration of caffeine solutions, habitual caffeine intake, and genetic modifiers of bitter taste influence the efficacy of caffeine mouth rinsing as an ergogenic strategy.

This study examined associations between anxiety, stress, and resting metabolic rate (RMR). Thirty women and 23 men had RMR measured at two visits. Participants also had body composition assessed and completed several questionnaires: State–Trait Inventory for Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety (STICSA), Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI)-3, and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)-14. The state version of the STICSA was completed at both visits, while the other questionnaires were completed at visit one. RMR was expressed in kilocalories per day and relative to lean mass (RMRrelative). Participants were divided into low-, medium-, and high-anxiety groups based on STICSA trait scores, and RMR was compared among groups using one-way ANOVA. Changes between visits were evaluated using paired t tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. RMR did not change from visit one to visit two (1589 to 1586 kcal/day, p = 0.86) even though STICSA state scores slightly declined (Z-statistic = –2.39, p = 0.017). RMRrelative values were 30.3 ± 3.7, 29.0 ± 1.9, and 29.9 ± 3.6 kcal/kg of lean mass among low, medium, and high trait anxiety groups, respectively (F = 0.70, p = 0.50). No RMR variable significantly correlated with PSS-14, ASI-3, or STICSA scores. This study provides evidence that trait anxiety and life stress do not impact RMR. Whether an association between these factors exists in anxiety disorders remains to be evaluated. Novelty Contrary to previous research, this study found no associations between anxiety and RMR. It is doubtful whether practitioners need to account for healthy subjects’ trait anxiety and stress when analyzing RMR data.

The SHiP experiment is proposed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/$c$ proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. About $10^{11}$ muons per spill will be produced in the dump. To design the experiment such that the muon-induced background is minimized, a precise knowledge of the muon spectrum is required. To validate the muon flux generated by our Pythia and GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation (FairShip), we have measured the muon flux emanating from a SHiP-like target at the SPS. This target, consisting of 13 interaction lengths of slabs of molybdenum and tungsten, followed by a 2.4 m iron hadron absorber was placed in the H4 400 GeV/$c$ proton beam line. To identify muons and to measure the momentum spectrum, a spectrometer instrumented with drift tubes and a muon tagger were used. During a three-week period a dataset for analysis corresponding to $(3.27\pm0.07)~\times~10^{11}$ protons on target was recorded. This amounts to approximatively 1% of a SHiP spill. The SHiP experiment will search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 \GeV/$c$ proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. The primary purpose of this Student Research Poster Paper is to discuss two grouping methodologies: cluste analysis and the Q-Methodology. Each of these statistical methodologies quantitatively group similar individuals but do so in two separate ways. In cluster analysis, individuals are grouped by optimizing proximity measures. For example, the single link clustering algorithm groups individuals together that have the smallest Euclidean distance from each other. In Q-Methodology, individuals are grouped by evaluating person-to-person correlations. For example, if two individuals have a correlation of 0.78, they are likely to be grouped together whereas individuals with a correlation of 0.09 are likely to be in different groups. In this paper, we outline multiple clustering approaches, the grouping mechanism in Q-Methodology, and discuss the differences between these two approaches when grouping participants. During this discussion, we will use an example from our own engineering education research to compare grouping results from the same data set. This paper contributes to the research field by describing and utilizing a relatively unknown methodology in engineering education. It will also add to our knowledge of cluster analysis techniques and compare those algorithms to another robust grouping method.

This Full Research Paper discusses ongoing work to develop a survey instrument to reliably assess undergraduate engineering student self-regulated decision-making. This work focuses on a second round of item expansion and refinement to the Decision-Making Competency Inventory (DMCI) to develop items related to learning from past decisions. The refined instrument was distributed to first-year engineering students enrolled in a large, public, land-grant institution located in the southeastern United States in the Fall of 2018. Of the approximately 1,200 students in first-year engineering courses, 883 valid surveys were randomly split into two separate samples for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). EFA results indicated a viable four-factor solution, which was explored with the CFA. The CFA results also indicated a four-factor model was appropriate. Improving this instrument will help researchers document and understand students’ decision-making skills and how they relate to observed decisions like initial choice of major or change of major. A decision-making instrument will also be valuable in evaluating the effectiveness of interventions to help students build their decision-making competency and make adaptive choices.

Ehlert, A and Wilson, PB. A systematic review of golf warm-ups: behaviors, injury, and performance. J Strength Cond Res 33(12): 3444-3462, 2019-Previous literature has demonstrated that warm-ups have the potential to increase physical performance and reduce risk of injury. Warm-ups before golf may have a similar result, but a systematic evaluation of their effects in golf is currently lacking. Three electronic databases (PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science) were systematically searched to address 3 primary research questions: (a) What are the current warm-up behaviors of golfers?; (b) Is there an association between warm-up behaviors and golf-related injury?; and (c) What are the effects of various warm-up protocols on measures of golf performance? Twenty-three studies (9 observational and 14 experimental) were identified that included data on warm-ups before golf participation. Overall, the current data suggest that many golfers either do not warm-up regularly or perform a warm-up that is short in duration. Studies on the association between warm-up behaviors and golf-related injury were mixed and inconclusive. Experimental studies suggest that a variety of warm-up methods may be beneficial for golf performance. Specifically, dynamic warm-ups and those with resistance exercise tended to enhance measures of performance, whereas static stretching was inferior to other methods and potentially detrimental to performance. Overall, the results of this systematic review suggest that various warm-up protocols (with the exception of static stretching) may enhance golf performance, but observational data suggest many golfers do not regularly perform them. More data are needed on the warm-up behaviors of competitive golfers, the impact of warm-up behaviors on golf-related injury, and to further identify effective warm-up methods for enhancing golf performance.

Based on test-beam measurements, we study the response of a liquid-scintillator detector equipped with wavelength-shifting optical modules, that are proposed e.g. for the IceCube experiment and the SHiP experiment, and adiabatic light guides that are viewed either by a photomultiplier tube or by an array of silicon photomultipliers. We report on the efficiency, the time resolution and the detector response to different particle types and point out potential ways to improve the detector performance.

Although many factors exist as to why students choose not to pursue graduate study, one significant barrier is the lack of knowledge regarding financial resources available to pursue such study. To explore this, we developed and launched a pilot survey that probed student career plans, current and perceived financial resources, perceptions about the application process for graduate school and the role of finances in their decision to pursue an advanced degree. We also interviewed three undergraduate respondents to further elucidate their views of the utility of graduate degrees in their field and how they went about gathering knowledge about the financial support available for graduate studies. The findings confirmed that most undergraduate students begin to consider graduate school as juniors and seniors. While the participants most often selected financial factors as influencing their graduate school decisions, interviews showed that students amassed financial knowledge from their acquaintances within industry or from graduate students in other disciplines.

A number of standards addresses the problem of high-speed data transmission on serial or serial-parallel data lines. Serial-parallel data transmission means the transmitted information is distributed on parallel data lines. Even though several standards exist, there are only a few basic techniques used in most of these standards. This paper is giving an overview of these different basic techniques used in the physical layer of today’s data transmission standards, for example DVI/HDMI, USB2.0, Infiniband, SFI5, etc. [1–9]. The main focus lies on the approaches used for physical signaling, line coding and information synchronization in serial and serialparallel systems. In addition, currently discussed techniques to improve data transmission in the future will be presented.

A novel explicit knowledge embedded space mapping (SM) optimization technique is presented in this paper. It generalizes the implementation procedure of the efficient SM technique by introducing a buffer space called embedded knowledge space between the original coarse model space and the fine model space, where the ingredients of the coarse model space can be completely different from those of the fine model space. Therefore, this generic scheme can be used to map the coarse model space of arbitrary physical content to the fine model space of different physical content through the embedded knowledge space that is built up with the available radio frequency (RF) circuit CAD formula. The emphasis of the application of the proposed scheme is put on the design of low temperature cofired ceramic (LTCC) RF passive circuits in this paper, along with the required CAD formulas (knowledge) for typical embedded multilayer passives. The effectiveness of the proposed new scheme is demonstrated through two design examples of LTCC lumped element band pass filters for wireless applications. The detailed procedure and flowchart of the proposed implementation scheme are also given in the paper.

The project generally investigates the effect of pneumatic vortex generators on flows within a Mach number range of $$M_{\infty} =$$ 0.3–0.7. The efficiency of pneumatic jet actuators to control flow separation was investigated since years. It has been shown that at low Mach numbers the separation of boundary layers can be delayed and avoided, if the velocity ratio between the actuator jet and the free-stream is sufficiently high and the orientation of the jet axis is properly chosen. However, with increasing free-stream velocity, the ratio decreases as w jet must stay below the speed of sound to avoid significant losses due to shock-waves. Thus, the effectivity of slotted pneumatic jet actuators becomes questionable. The scope of this investigation is to identify the potential of this active flow control method at technical relevant Mach numbers. The blowing height is shown as a function of varying Mach number M ∞, velocity ratio w jet/u ∞ and Reynolds number Re set by the total pressure of the test facility p t.

A new 12-bit medium-time analog storage device is presented. The proposed circuit is based on a fully differential two-stage operational amplifier (opamp) working as a sample-and-hold circuit (S&H). A novel refresh scheme employing common-mode rejection has been developed which extends the storage time on a capacitance beyond the border of voltage decay caused by charge leaking. Measurements show 12- and 8-bit resolution for 15 and 330 s, respectively, at room temperature. Compared to analog storage on a simple capacitance, the new scheme offers 84% area reduction for the same storage times while achieving much faster read-write cycle times. The circuit is intended for use in analog neural networks. The basic idea can be extended to design simple low-cost S&H circuits.

A novel configuration of millimeter-wave planar array antenna based on low-temperature cofired ceramic (LTCC) technology is investigated. The configuration exploits the three-dimensional (3-D) integration feature of LTCC by incorporating a novel quasi-cavity-backed patch (QCBP) element using a pair of grid-like conductor walls and a mixed feeding network configuration. A proposed LTCC planar array antenna consisting of 16 by 16 elements is designed, manufactured and tested. Good agreement is achieved between the theoretical performance and the measured results.

Raloxifene treatment increases bone strength more than would be expected from changes in bone mass or bone turnover A possible mechanism through which raloxifene treatment increases bone strength independent of bone mass and bone turnover is by reducing the size of resorption cavities formed during bone remodeling. A novel three-dimensional dynamic bone histomorphometry approach was used to determine the effects of raloxifene treatment on the threedimensional size of individual bone remodeling events (both resorption cavities and subsequent bone formation events) in cancellous bone using an ovariectomized rat model. Raloxifene treated animals were found to have reduced cavity volume and maximum cavity depth compared to both ovariectomized and sham control groups. Sham control and raloxifene treated animals also have reduced formation event size compared to OVX animals. Raloxifene leads to reduced size of remodeling events compared to ovariectomized and sham controls. Differences in cavity size may influence subsequent bone biomechanical performance independent of bone turnover.

The packaging Industry has become more and more globalized. Prices have dropped precipitously and volumes have climbed enormously in a very short time. This change has been financed by acquisitions of technological knowledge from the customers who originally designed the product. The jobs came in increments of high volume low mix products. Now many of these information resources are depleted and the industry needs to continue to grow. As the high volume low mix business lias nearly saturated this growth will occur in the lower volume higher mix market. Of necessity more engineering work will be needed than ever before. This will drive the need for more engineers and more education. As the opportunity for acquisition has decreased most of this growth will be organic. IMAPS as the professional organization that addresses the individual engineer will be the key ingredient in making this happen.

The design of a continuous rate octal 1.0 to 3.2 Gb/s serializer/deserializer circuit that meets SONET and XAUI requirements is presented. The performance of the SERDES surpasses stringent OC-48 jitter generation and tolerance specifications. This is achieved with the use of a master-slave PLL tuning scheme and meticulous attention to layout and isolation techniques. Implemented in a 0.13 /spl mu/m digital CMOS technology, the part exhibits less than 5 mUI r.m.s. jitter and the 1.2 mm/sup 2/ transceiver dissipates 160 mW.

In this paper we report about the recently completed porting of GAMMA to the Netgear GA621 Gigabit Ethernet adapter, and provide a comparison among GAMMA, MPI/GAMMA, TCP/IP and MPICH/TCP, based on the Netgear GA621 and the older Netgear GA620 network adapters and using different device drivers, in a Gigabit Ethernet cluster of PC running Linux 2.4. GAMMA (the Genoa Active Message Machine) is a lightweight messaging system based on an active message-like paradigm, originally designed for efficient exploitation of Fast Ethernet interconnects. The comparison includes simple latency/bandwidth evaluation of the messaging systems on both adapters, as well as performance comparisons based on the NAS Parallel Benchmarks and an end-user fluid dynamics application called Modular Ocean Model (MOM). The analysis of results provides useful hints concerning the efficient use of Gigabit Ethernet with clusters of PC. In particular, it emerges that GAMMA on the GA621 adapter, with a combination of low end-to-end latency (8.5 /spl mu/s) and high throughput (118.4 MByte/s), provides a performing, cost-effective alternative to proprietary high-speed networks, e.g. Myrinet, for a wide range of cluster computing applications.

A parallel optical link, PAROLI(R), with over 15 Gbit/s throughput for both asynchronous and synchronous data transmission is described. The link consists of discrete transmitter and receiver modules and a low skew cable system. The PAROLI(R) system operates with 12 optical channels at data rates of up to 1.25 Gbit/s per channel. The oxide-confined VCSEL array, the pin diode array and the ICs are designed to operate at 3.3 Volts. Methods of system performance evaluation by eye diagram analysis and BER scan techniques are discussed. Improvements of key component features are presented, pointing towards 2.5 Gbit/s transmission per optical channel in the near future.
