Abstract

The analysis of high-precision ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p$ cross-sectional data from the EPECUR Collaboration based on the multichannel $K$-matrix approach is presented. The sharp structures seen in these data are studied in terms of both opening thresholds and new resonance contributions. Some prominent features are found to be due to the opening $K\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}$ channel. However, a complete description of the data is improved with the addition of two narrow resonant structures at $W\ensuremath{\sim}1.686$ and $W\ensuremath{\sim}1.720\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}$. These structures are interpreted as manifestations of ${S}_{11}$ and ${P}_{11}$ resonances. The underlying nature of the observed phenomena is discussed.

2. Need for a new pion–nucleon partial wave analysis in theN*(1440) resonance region

Abstract

Existing determinations of the masses, widths and decay modes of low-lying excited states of the nucleon, as compiled in the Review of Particle Physics, are determined from energy-independent partial wave analyses of pion-nucleon scattering data. For the N*(1440) and most other resonances under 2 GeV, the analyses cited are the Karlsruhe-Helsinki, Carnegie Mellon-Berkeley and Kent State analyses, the latter of which used the elastic amplitudes from the other two. The data included in these analyses were published before 1980. Other analyses, notably the recent ones from George Washington University and the Pittsburgh-Argonne group, are not used for averages, fits, limits, etc. Complete sets of measurements (differential cross sections, analyzing powers and spin rotation parameters) have been measured in the N*(1440) resonance region since 1980, culminating in the Crystal Ball program at BNL to measure all-neutral final states (charge exchange, multiple π0 final states, η production near threshold and inverse photoproduction). An overview of these data is presented and the case is made for a revitalized partial wave analysis effort

Abstract

Precise new data for the reaction K−p→π0Λ are presented in the c.m. energy range 1565 to 1600 MeV. Our analysis of these data sheds new light on claims for the Σ(1580) 3 2 − resonance, which (if it exists with the specified quantum numbers) must be an exotic baryon because of its very low mass. Our results show no evidence for this state.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the polarization observed for bottomonium states produced in p-Cu collisions at square root of s = 38.8 GeV. The angular distribution of the decay dimuons of the Upsilon(1S) state shows no polarization at small values of the fractional longitudinal momentum x(F) and transverse momentum p(T) but significant positive transverse production polarization for either p(T)>1.8 GeV/c or for x(F)>0.35. The Upsilon(2S+3S) (unresolved) states show a large transverse production polarization at all values of x(F) and p(T) measured. These observations challenge NRQCD calculations of the polarization expected in the hadronic production of bottomonium states.

Abstract

We report on an investigation of the ({pi}{sup -}, {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}) reaction by means of the {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} invariant mass distributions from {pi}{sup -} interactions on H, D, C, Al, and Cu targets at {rho}{sub {pi}{sup -}} = 0.408 GeV/c. The sharp, strong peak in the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} invariant mass near 2m{sub {pi}} reported by the CHAOS Collaboration is not seen in our {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} data. However, we do observe a change in the shape of the {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} invariant mass spectrum for the different targets, indicating that the {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} interaction diminishes in the nuclear medium as represented by nuclei D, C, Al, and Cu, compared to hydrogen.

Abstract

Measurements of the suppression of the yield per nucleon of J/psi and psi(') production for 800 GeV/ c protons incident on heavy nuclear targets, relative to light nuclear targets, have been made with very broad coverage in x(F) and p(T). The observed suppression is smallest at x(F) values of 0.25 and below, and increases at larger values of x(F). It is also strongest at small p(T). Substantial differences between psi(') and J/psi production are observed for the first time in p-A collisions. The suppression for psi(') production is stronger than that for J/psi for x(F) near zero, but becomes comparable to that for J/psi for x(F)>0.6.

Abstract

A precise measurement of the ratios of the Drell-Yan cross section per nucleon for an 800 GeV/{ital c} proton beam incident on Be, Fe, and W targets is reported. The behavior of the Drell-Yan ratios at small target-parton momentum fraction is well described by an existing fit to the shadowing observed in deep-inelastic scattering. The cross-section ratios as a function of the incident-parton momentum fraction set tight limits on the energy loss of quarks passing through a cold nucleus. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

FNAL E866/NuSea has made a number of measurements of J /ψ and ψ′ production by 800 GeV protons on fixed targets of Be, Fe and W. Preliminary results are presented and discussed in the context of nuclear effects such as energy loss and multiple scattering of the partons, absorption of the produced cc pairs, and shadowing. Production mechanisms involving color-singlet or color-octet states for the cc pair which eventually forms a J /ψ or ψ′ have implications on the strength of absorption in the nucleus. These nuclear dependence studies are critical in furthering our understanding of these processes towards future measurements at RHIC and the LHC, where J /ψ suppression is predicted to be an important signature of the creation of quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract

We have measured differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of charged pions from {sup 3}H and {sup 3}He into the backward hemisphere. Near the peak of the delta resonance, at {ital T}{sub {pi}}=180 MeV, an angular distribution covering 114{degree} to 168{degree} in the laboratory extends our earlier measurements. At {ital T}{sub {pi}}=142, 180, 220, and 256 MeV, we have measured an excitation function at angles approaching 170{degree}. The cross sections for the reactions {sup 3}He({pi}{sup +},{pi}{sup +}){sup 3}He, {sup 3}H({pi}{sup {minus}},{pi}{sup {minus}}){sup 3}H show a rise at back angles which is not seen for {sup 3}He({pi}{sup {minus}},{pi}{sup {minus}}){sup 3}He and {sup 3}H({pi}{sup +},{pi}{sup +}){sup 3}H. There is a dip in the cross sections near 130{degree} for {ital T}{sub {pi}}=180 MeV.

Abstract

Using a silicon-microstrip detector array to identify secondary vertices, we have observed {ital b}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} decays in 800 GeV/{ital c} proton-gold interactions. The doubly differential cross section for {ital J}/{psi} mesons originating from {ital b}-quark decays, assuming linear dependence on nucleon number, is {ital d}{sup 2}{sigma}/{ital dx}{sub {ital Fdp}}{sup 2}{sub {ital T}}=107{plus_minus}28{plus_minus}19/nucleon at {ital x}{sub {ital F}}=0.05 and {ital p}{sub {ital T}}=1GeV/{ital c}. This measurement is compared to next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. The integrated {ital b}-quark production cross section, obtained by extrapolation over all {ital x}{sub {ital F}} and {ital p}{sub {ital T}}, is {sigma}({ital pN}{r_arrow}{ital bb}{ovr bar}+{ital X})=5.7{plus_minus}1.5{plus_minus}1.3 nb/nucleon.

Abstract

Cross sections have been measured for the inelastic scattering of [pi][sup +] and [pi][sup [minus]] mesons from [sup 3]H and [sup 3]He in the 10-MeV interval just above the breakup thresholds, for incident pion energies of 142, 180, and 220 MeV and scattering angles of 40[degree], 60[degree], 80[degree], 90[degree], and 110[degree]. No significant departure from unity is observed for the ratios of charge-symmetric cross sections. Comparisons are made with elastic pion-scattering and inelastic electron-scattering data.

Abstract

The design of a coincident sampling grid scintillator (SGS) is described, with applications to particle identification in intense secondary beams. Timing resolution of 1 ns is able to distinguish pions from electrons, and pulse heights are able to resolve pions from muons at low momentum. Pulse height resolution is also used to distinguish π + from protons at high momentum, and this is used to understand the LAMPF P 3 channel particle separation.

Abstract

The differential cross sections do/dxF for J/G produced inclusively in 800 GeV/c p-Cn and pBe collisions have been measured in the kinematic range 0.30 5 IF < 0.95 through the decay mode J/G + p+p-. They are compared with the predictions of the semilocal duality model for several sets of parton density functions. No evidence for a suggested intrinsic charm contribution to the cross section is observed. The ratio of the differential cross sections for Cu and Be targets confirms the suppression of J/$ production in heavy nuclei at large ZF.

A Silicon Microstrip Spectrometer has been installed and successfully operated in experiment E789 at Fermilab. The main physics goal of the experiment is to search for charged particle decays of B and D Mesons. Damage effects due to ionizing radiation exposure to the silicon during the experiment are reported.

Abstract

We have measured the differential cross sections for the scattering of π ± from 3 H and 3 He. The dσ's are normalized to π ± d elastic scattering measured under the same experimental conditions. Our newest measurements were performed at incident pion energies from 142 to 256 MeV and angles between 140° and 180°. The momentum-transfer dependence of the cross sections was measured up to 11 fm −2 , making it possible to explore differences in the matter form factors of 3 H and 3 He.

Abstract

The spin-rotation parameters [ital A] and [ital R] and the related spin-rotation angle [beta] have been measured for [pi][sup +][ital p] and [pi][sup [minus]][ital p] elastic scattering using protons polarized in the scattering plane. The pion-beam momenta are 427, 471, 547, 625, and 657 MeV/[ital c] and the angular range is [minus]0.9[le]cos[ital FTHETA][sub c.m.][le]0.3. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence, using a scintillator hodoscope for the pions, and the Large Acceptance Spectrometer combined with the JANUS polarimeter for the recoil protons. The results are compared with the four recent [pi][ital N] partial wave analyses (PWA's). Our data show that the major features of these PWA's are correct. The [ital A] and [ital R] measurements complete our program of pion-nucleon experiments, providing full data sets at three of the above beam momenta. Such sets can be used to test the constraints in the PWA's or to obtain a model-independent set of [pi][ital N] scattering amplitudes.

Abstract

Differential cross sections for K{sup -} radiative capture in flight on the proton, leading to the gammaLAMBDA and gammaSIGMA{sup 0} final states, have been measured at eight K{sup -} momenta between 514 and 750 MeV/c. The data were obtained with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer installed at the separated K/pi beam line C6 of the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The results substantially improve the existing experimental data available for studying radiative decays of excited hyperon states. An exploratory theoretical analysis is performed within the Regge-plus-resonance approach. According to this analysis, the gammaSIGMA{sup 0} final state is dominated by hyperon-resonance exchange and hints at an important role for a resonance in the mass region of 1700 MeV. In the gammaLAMBDA final state, in contrast, the resonant contributions account for only half the strength, and the data suggest the importance of a resonance in the mass region of 1550 MeV.

Abstract

Measured values of the differential cross sections for pion-nucleon charge exchange, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}n$, are presented for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ momenta of $103,112,120,130,139,152$, and $178$ MeV/$c$. Complete angular distributions were obtained by using the Crystal Ball detector at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Statistical uncertainties of the differential cross sections vary from $3$ to $6%$ in the backward angle region and from $6$ to about $20%$ in the forward region with the exception of the two most forward angles. The systematic uncertainties are estimated to be about $3%$ for all momenta.

Abstract

We report the first measurements of the total cross section of the reaction K{sup -}p{yields}{sigma}{sup 0}{gamma} at eight beam momenta from 514 to 750 MeV/c. The data were obtained at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory using the Crystal Ball detector consisting of 672 NaI crystals. All charged particles were vetoed by a barrel of plastic scintillators, resulting in a study of only the neutral decays of the {sigma}{sup 0}. The prompt photon and the photons from the decay products of {sigma}{sup 0} were detected for each reconstructed event; the neutron was also detected in a small fraction of the events.

Abstract

The left-right asymmetry of {pi}{sup {minus}}{ital p}{r arrow}{gamma}{ital n} has been measured using a transversely polarized target at seven pion momenta from 301 to 625 MeV/{ital c}, mostly at photon angles of 90{degree} and 110{degree} c.m. The final-state {gamma} and neutron were detected in coincidence. Neutrons were recorded in two arrays of plastic scintillators and the {gamma}'s in two matching sets of lead-glass counters. The results are compared with the predictions from the two most recent single-pion photoproduction partial-wave analyses. The agreement with the analysis of Arai and Fujii is poor, casting some doubt on the correctness of their values for the radiative decay amplitude of the neutral Roper resonance which are used widely. The agreement is much better with the results of the VPI analysis. Also, a comparison is made with the recoil-proton polarization data from the inverse reaction measured at 90{degree} with a deuterium target. It reveals substantial discrepancies, indicating the shortcomings of the deuterium experiments for neutron target experiments. Our data are also compared with several bag-model calculations.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on a hydrogen target. The polar and azimuthal angular distribution parameters have been extracted over the kinematic range 4.5m micromicro15 GeV/c2 (excluding the Upsilon resonance region), 0p T4 GeV/c, and 0x F0.8. The p+p angular distributions are similar to those of p+d, and both data sets are compared with models which attribute the cos2varphi distribution either to the presence of the transverse-momentum-dependent Boer-Mulders structure function h1 perpendicular to 1 or to QCD effects. The data indicate the need to include QCD effects before reliable information on the Boer-Mulders function can be extracted. The validity of the Lam-Tung relation in p+p Drell-Yan data is also tested.

Abstract

New results on the rare, doubly radiative decay {eta}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma}{gamma} have been obtained from a revised analysis of the Crystal Ball experiment performed at the AGS. The analysis yields the first information on the dependence of the decay width, {gamma}({eta}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma}{gamma}), on the two-photon invariant mass squared, m{sup 2}({gamma}{gamma}). A re-evaluation of the branching ratio is also made, BR({eta}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma}{gamma})=(2.21{+-}0.24{sub stat}{+-}0.47{sub syst})x10{sup -4}; it implies that the decay width is {gamma}({eta}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma}{gamma})=0.285{+-}0.031{sub stat}{+-}0.061{sub syst} eV. These results are close to predictions based on chiral perturbation theory with vector-meson dominance.

The reaction K{sup -}p{yields}{sigma}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{yields} neutrals was studied with the Crystal Ball detector at the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron for beam momenta between 514 and 750 MeV/c. The photons from {sigma}{sup 0} and {pi}{sup 0} decays were detected, as well as the neutron in a small fraction of the events. The differential cross section and the {sigma}{sup 0} polarization are reported at eight momenta and nearly the full angular range. Total cross sections are derived from Legendre polynomial fits to the data. The measurements presented are of considerably higher precision than previous results.

Abstract

Results are presented for the charge-symmetry superratio {ital R}, simple ratios {ital r}{sub 1} and {ital r}{sub 2}, and the differential cross sections of {pi}{sup +} and {pi}{sup {minus}} elastic scattering on {sup 3}H and {sup 3}He: {ital R}={ital r}{sub 1}{ital r2}, {ital r}{sub 1}={sigma}({theta})({pi}{sup +} {sup 3}H{r arrow}{pi}{sup +} H)/{sigma}({theta})({pi}{sup {minus}} He{r arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}} {sup 3}He), and {ital r}{sub 2}={sigma}({theta})({pi}{sup {minus}} {sup 3}H{r arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}} H)/{sigma}({theta})({pi}{sup +} {sup 3}He {r arrow}{pi}{sup +} {sup 3}He). The measurements were made at {ital T}{sub {pi}}=180 MeV and {theta}{sub {pi}}(lab)=40{degree}--90{degree}; some data were obtained at {ital T}{sub {pi}}=143 MeV also. At all angles, {ital R}{gt}1 and {ital r}{sub 2}{gt}1 indicative of a violation of charge symmetry; however, we also find that {ital r}{sub 1}{congruent}1. Our data are consistent with {ital F}{sub {ital p}}({sup 3}H){congruent}{ital F}{sub {ital n}}({sup 3}He) and {ital F}{sub {ital n}}({sup 3}H){gt}{ital F}{sub {ital p}}({sup 3}He), where {ital F}{sub {ital p}} and {ital F}{sub {ital n}} are the proton and neutron matter form factors. {sigma}({theta})({pi}{sup {plus minus}} {sup 3}H{r arrow}{pi}{sup {plus minus}} H) decreases with increasing magnitude of the four-momentum transfer {ital t} up to {theta}{sub c.m.}{congruent}70{degree}; the {ital t} dependence of the {ital F} 's is comparable to that ofmore » the electromagnetic form factors. {sigma}({theta})({pi}{sup {minus}} H{r arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}3}H) has a non-spin-flip dip at {theta}{sub c.m.}{congruent}78{degree}.« less

Abstract

We report a high statistics measurement of Upsilon production with an 800 GeV/c proton beam on hydrogen and deuterium targets. The dominance of the gluon-gluon fusion process for Upsilon production at this energy implies that the cross section ratio, sigma(p+d--Upsilon)/2sigma(p+p--Upsilon), is sensitive to the gluon content in the neutron relative to that in the proton. Over the kinematic region 0x(F)0.6, this ratio is found to be consistent with unity, in striking contrast to the behavior of the Drell-Yan cross section ratio sigma(p+d)(DY)/2sigma(p+p)(DY). This result shows that the gluon distributions in the proton and neutron are very similar. The Upsilon production cross sections are also compared with the p+d and p+Cu cross sections from earlier measurements.

Abstract

Measurements of neutral pion (pi(0)) production at midrapidity in root s(NN)=200 GeV Au+Au collisions as a function of transverse momentum, p(T), collision centrality, and angle with respect to reaction plane are presented. The data represent the final pi(0) results from the PHENIX experiment for the first RHIC Au+Au run at design center-of-mass energy. They include additional data obtained using the PHENIX Level-2 trigger with more than a factor of 3 increase in statistics over previously published results for p(T)>6 GeV/c. We evaluate the suppression in the yield of high-p(T) pi(0)'s relative to pointlike scaling expectations using the nuclear modification factor R-AA. We present the p(T) dependence of R-AA for nine bins in collision centrality. We separately integrate R-AA over larger p(T) bins to show more precisely the centrality dependence of the high-p(T) suppression. We then evaluate the dependence of the high-p(T) suppression on the emission angle Delta phi of the pions with respect to event reaction plane for seven bins in collision centrality. We show that the yields of high-p(T) pi(0)'s vary strongly with Delta phi, consistent with prior measurements 1,2. We show that this variation persists in the most peripheral bin accessible in this analysis. For the peripheral bins we observe no suppression for neutral pions produced aligned with the reaction plane, whereas the yield of pi(0)'s produced perpendicular to the reaction plane is suppressed by a factor of similar to 2. We analyze the combined centrality and Delta phi dependence of the pi(0) suppression in different p(T) bins using different possible descriptions of parton energy loss dependence on jet path-length averages to determine whether a single geometric picture can explain the observed suppression pattern.

Abstract

Longitudinal density correlations of produced matter in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s{sub NN})=200 GeV have been measured from the inclusive charged particle distributions as a function of pseudorapidity window sizes. The extracted {alpha}{xi} parameter, related to the susceptibility of the density fluctuations in the long-wavelength limit, exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the number of participant nucleons, N{sub part}. A local maximum is seen at N{sub part}{approx}90, with corresponding energy density based on the Bjorken picture of {epsilon}{sub Bj}{tau}{approx}2.4 GeV/(fm{sup 2}c) with a transverse area size of 60 fm2. This behavior may suggest a critical phase boundary based on the Ginzburg-Landau framework.

Abstract

Emission source functions are extracted from correlation functions constructed from charged pions produced at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at s(NN)=200 GeV. The source parameters extracted from these functions at low k(T) give first indications of a long tail for the pion emission source. The source extension cannot be explained solely by simple kinematic considerations. The possible role of a halo of secondary pions from resonance emissions is explored.

Abstract

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of eta mesons in the range p(T)approximate to 2-12 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar gamma gamma channel for the three colliding systems as well as through the eta ->pi(0)pi(+)pi(-) decay mode in p+p and d+Au collisions. The nuclear modification factor in d+Au collisions, R-dAu(p(T))approximate to 1.0-1.1, suggests at most only modest p(T) broadening ("Cronin enhancement"). In central Au+Au reactions, the eta yields are significantly suppressed, with R-AuAu(p(T))approximate to 0.2. The ratio of eta to pi(0) yields is approximately constant as a function of p(T) for the three colliding systems in agreement with the high-p(T) world average of R-eta/pi(0)approximate to 0.5 in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions for a wide range of center-of-mass energies (root sNN approximate to 3-1800 GeV) as well as, for high scaled momentum x(p), in e(+)e(-) annihilations at root s=91.2 GeV. These results are consistent with a scenario where high-p(T) eta production in nuclear collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is largely unaffected by initial-state effects but where light-quark mesons (pi(0),eta) are equally suppressed due to final-state interactions of the parent partons in the dense medium produced in Au+Au reactions.

Abstract

The idea of ‘EPECUR’ was inspired by the recent splash of the activity around the pentaquark matters. The goal of the experiment is the search for narrow resonant states in the reactions π−p → π−p and π−p → K0Λ based on the very precise cross section measurements in fine energy steps of 0.5 MeV in terms of the invariant mass. As a valuable byproduct of the second stage of the experiment, Λ‐polarization in π−p → K0Λ can be measured, based on the well‐known weak Λ‐decay asymmetry. The expected statistical significance of the measurement overrides the best existing data from ‘NIMROD’ detector by an order of magnitude. The experimental setup is under construction at the ITEP proton synchrotron in collaboration with PNPI and ACU.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on a deuterium target. The muon angular distributions in the dilepton rest frame have been measured over the kinematic range 4.5m{mu mu}15 GeV/c{2}, 0p{T}4 GeV/c, and 0x{F}0.8. No significant cos2phi dependence is found in these proton-induced Drell-Yan data, in contrast with the situation for pion-induced Drell-Yan data. The data are compared with expectations from models which attribute the cos2phi distribution to a QCD vacuum effect or to the presence of the transverse-momentum-dependent Boer-Mulders structure function h{1}{perpendicular}. Constraints on the magnitude of the sea-quark h{1}{perpendicular} structure functions are obtained.

Abstract

Emission source functions are extracted from correlation functions constructed from charged pions produced at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The source parameters extracted from these functions at low k(T) give first indications of a long tail for the pion emission source. The source extension cannot be explained solely by simple kinematic considerations. The possible role of a halo of secondary pions from resonance emissions is explored.

Abstract

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of eta mesons have been measured within p(T)=2-10 GeV/c at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. In central Au+Au the eta yields are significantly suppressed compared to peripheral Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p yields scaled by the corresponding number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. The magnitude, centrality, and p(T) dependence of the suppression is common, within errors, for eta and pi(0). The ratio of eta to pi(0) spectra at high p(T) amounts to 0.40 < R-eta/pi(0)< 0.48 for the three systems, in agreement with the world average measured in hadronic and nuclear reactions and, at large scaled momentum, in e(+)e(-) collisions.

Abstract

The azimuthal distribution of identified π0 and inclusive photons has been measured in VsNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). The second-harmonic parameter (v2) was measured to describe the observed anisotropy of the azimuthal distribution. The measured inclusive photon v2 is consistent with the value expected for the photons from hadron decay and is also consistent with the lack of direct photon signal over the measured pT range 1–6 GeV/c. An attempt is made to extract v2 of direct photons.
