1. Reduction of neoclassical bulk-ion transport to avoid helium-ash retention in stellarator reactors

Abstract

The reduction of neoclassical energy transport in stellarators has traditionally focussed on optimizing magnetic fields for small values of ‘effective helical ripple’ — $\epsilon_\mathrm{eff}$ , the geometric factor associated with electron $1/\nu$ transport—and relying on the radial electric field, $E_\mathrm{r}$ , needed to maintain ambipolarity in the plasma, to simultaneously diminish ion energy losses to a tolerable level. As one must generally expect $E_\mathrm{r} \lt 0$ , such a strategy has a drawback for reactor operation, however, as negative values of $E_\mathrm{r}$ tend to hinder the exhaust of helium ash, and this will become intolerable if it results in excessive fuel dilution. Theoretically, one can show that the neoclassical transport of low- Z impurities depends critically on the ratio $L_{11}^e/L_{11}^i$ , where the $L_{11}^\sigma$ are the neoclassical particle diffusion coefficients of the bulk-plasma electrons ( $\sigma = e$ ) and ions ( $\sigma = i$ ). Increasing the value of this ratio is shown here to counteract impurity retention, but maintaining good confinement of the bulk species requires this to be achieved by decreasing $L_{11}^i$ rather than increasing $L_{11}^e$ , implying the need for more than just minimization of $\epsilon_\mathrm{eff}$ in reactor design. To assess the prospects of such an endeavor, a predictive 1-D transport code is used here to determine the range of $L_{11}^e/L_{11}^i$ values which arises in simulations of conventionally optimized reactor candidates. This range is found to be considerable, and includes examples with $L_{11}^e/L_{11}^i$ values large enough to provide neoclassical temperature screening of the helium ash and even to flip the sign of the neoclassical convective velocity from inward- to outward-directed. More intriguingly, the strong reduction of $L_{11}^i$ in such cases can also lead to the appearance of $E_\mathrm{r} \gt 0$ (a so-called ‘electron root’) within the core of plasmas having central densities as large as $2\times 10^{20}$ m ^−3 . Having $E_\mathrm{r} \gt 0$ in the plasma core produces the ideal situation in which all thermodynamic forces aid in the exhaust of helium ash, although this benefit is tempered by the small values of $L_{11}^z$ which accompany an electron root (where $\sigma = z$ denotes helium ash). Means are discussed for improving the results presented here, so that avoiding helium-ash retention can be explicitly targeted in future reactor optimizations.

Abstract

After a long device enhancement phase, scientific operation resumed in 2022. The main new device components are the water cooling of all plasma facing components and the new water-cooled high heat flux divertor units. Water cooling allowed for the first long-pulse operation campaign. A maximum discharge length of 8 min was achieved with a total heating energy of 1.3 GJ. Safe divertor operation was demonstrated in attached and detached mode. Stable detachment is readily achieved in some magnetic configurations but requires impurity seeding in configurations with small magnetic pitch angle within the edge islands. Progress was made in the characterization of transport mechanisms across edge magnetic islands: Measurement of the potential distribution and flow pattern reveals that the islands are associated with a strong poloidal drift, which leads to rapid convection of energy and particles from the last closed flux surface into the scrape-off layer. Using the upgraded plasma heating systems, advanced heating scenarios were developed, which provide improved energy confinement comparable to the scenario, in which the record triple product for stellarators was achieved in the previous operation campaign. However, a magnetic configuration-dependent critical heating power limit of the electron cyclotron resonance heating was observed. Exceeding the respective power limit leads to a degradation of the confinement.

Abstract

A single-field-period quasi-isodynamic stellarator configuration is presented. This configuration, which resembles a twisted strip, is obtained by the method of direct construction, that is, it is found via an expansion in the distance from the magnetic axis. Its discovery, however, relied on an additional step involving numerical optimization, performed within the space of near-axis configurations defined by a set of adjustable magnetic-field parameters. This optimization, completed in 30 seconds on a single cpu core using the SIMSOPT code, yields a solution with excellent confinement, as measured by the conventional figure of merit for neoclassical transport, effective ripple, at a modest aspect ratio of eight. The optimization parameters that led to this configuration are described, its confinement properties are assessed, and a set of magnetic-field coils is found. The resulting transport at low collisionality is much smaller than that of W7-X, and the device needs significantly fewer coils thanks to the reduced number of field periods., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. Abstract

Quasisymmetry can greatly improve the confinement of energetic particles and thermal plasma in a stellarator. The magnetic field of a quasisymmetric stellarator at high plasma pressure is significantly affected by the bootstrap current, but the computational cost of accurate stellarator bootstrap calculations has precluded use inside optimization. Here, a new efficient method is demonstrated for optimization of quasisymmetric stellarator configurations such that the bootstrap current profile is consistent with the geometry. The approach is based on the fact that all neoclassical phenomena in quasisymmetry are isomorphic to those in axisymmetry. Therefore accurate formulae for the bootstrap current in tokamaks, which can be evaluated rapidly, can be applied also in stellarators. The deviation between this predicted parallel current and the actual parallel current in the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium is penalized in the objective function, and the current profile of the equilibrium is included in the parameter space. Quasisymmetric configurations with significant pressure are thereby obtained with self-consistent bootstrap current and excellent confinement. These advances enable the development of new stellarator configurations with improved confinement properties.

Abstract

Key physics issues in the design of a high- quasi-axisymmetric stellarator configuration are discussed. The goal of the design study is a compact stellarator configuration with aspect ratio comparable to that of tokamaks and good transport and stability properties. Quasi- axisymmetry has been used to provide good drift trajectories. Ballooning stabilization has been accomplished by strong axisymmetric shaping, yielding a stellarator configuration whose core is in the second stability regime for ballooning modes. A combination of externally generated shear and non-axisymmetric corrugation of the plasma boundary provides stability to external kink modes even in the absence of a conducting wall. The resulting configuration is also found to be robustly stable to vertical modes, increasing the freedom to perform axisymmetric shaping. Stability to neoclassical tearing modes is conferred by a monotonically increasing profile. A gyrokinetic f code has been used to confirm the adequacy of the neoclassical confinement. Neutral beam losses have been evaluated with Monte Carlo codes.

Abstract

The next step in the Wendelstein stellarator line is the large superconducting device Wendelstein 7-X, currently under construction in Greifswald, Germany. Steady-state operation is an intrinsic feature of stellarators, and one key element of the Wendelstein 7-X mission is to demonstrate steady-state operation under plasma conditions relevant for a fusion power plant. Steady-state operation of a fusion device, on the one hand, requires the implementation of special technologies, giving rise to technical challenges during the design, fabrication and assembly of such a device. On the other hand, also the physics development of steady-state operation at high plasma performance poses a challenge and careful preparation. The electron cyclotron resonance heating system, diagnostics, experiment control and data acquisition are prepared for plasma operation lasting 30 min. This requires many new technological approaches for plasma heating and diagnostics as well as new concepts for experiment control and data acquisition.

Abstract

In linear accelerators, wake field effects and dispersion from orbit distortions can lead to considerable emittance dilution. Since the transverse wake fields and the dispersion depend on the orbit in the accelerating structures and quadrupoles, there are constraints on the resolution of the beam position monitors and on alignment tolerances. The tracking code L, which is affiliated to the family of MAFIA codes, has been developed to simulate both single and multi-bunch dynamics in linear accelerators. By use of this code, the impact of misalignments on the combined single and multi-bunch behaviour of the beam is investigated for the S-band accelerator as envisioned in the SBLC study. Further, the performance of a full machine tuning scheme including beam loading compensation, orbit correction, structure adjustment and emittance correction is examined. From the results, limits for the alignment tolerances are deduced.

Abstract

MAFIA Version 4.0 is an almost completely new version of the general purpose electromagnetic simulator known since 13 years. The major improvements concern the new graphical user interface based on state of the art technology as well as a series of new solvers for new physics problems. MAFIA now covers heat distribution, electro-quasistatics, S-parameters in frequency domain, particle beam tracking in linear accelerators, acoustics and even elastodynamics. The solvers that were available in earlier versions have also been improved and/or extended, as for example the complex eigenmode solver, the 2D–3D coupled PIC solvers. Time domain solvers have new waveguide boundary conditions with an extremely low reflection even near cutoff frequency, concentrated elements are available as well as a variety of signal processing options. Probably the most valuable addition are recursive sub-grid capabilities that enable modeling of very small details in large structures.

Abstract

A method to improve fast-particle confinement during quasi-axisymmetric stellarator optimization has been identified. Quasi-axisymmetric (qa) stellarator designs have improved neoclassical transport due to their special symmetry of the magnetic field strength. Previously, it has been shown that, in general, quasi-symmetry can only be obtained on one single flux surface (Garren and Boozer 1991 Phys. Fluids B 3 2805–21). Even though quasi-symmetry can be a crucial property of stellarator design, there is no established convention for choosing the flux surface on which this should be optimized. To address this question, the flux surface on which quasi-axisymmetry is optimized has been varied in a qa configuration. The optimal location was found to lie between half radius and the plasma edge, since this allows for two beneficial features: it increases the number of flux-surfaces with improved quasi-axisymmetry and it increases the volume enclosed by the flux surface with the best qa quality. A novel, compact, quasi-axisymmetric configuration is presented which exhibits low fast-particle losses and is stable to ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. The design has fast-particle loss rates below 8% for flux surfaces within the half-radius, and is shown to have a MHD stability limit of a normalized pressure of , where is volume averaged. The flux surfaces at various plasma betas and currents as calculated using the SPEC equilibrium code (Loizu et al 2016 Phys. Plasmas23 112505) are presented. Neoclassical transport coefficients are shown to be similar to an equivalent tokamak, with a distinct banana regime at half-radius. It is well known that optimisation of the MHD equilibrium of stellarators can have great influence on the performance and hence have a significant effect on the potential of stellarators as potential power plants. The ROSE code was written to carry out an optimisation based on an equilibrium evaluation using VMEC and several additional codes. This paper presents both a quasi-axially symmetric and a quasi-isodynamic equilibrium obtained with ROSE and demonstrates two important features that are new to stellarator optimisation. One allows the reduction of coil complexity by analysing a current sheet obtained with NESCOIL. Abstract

Strategies for the improvement of quasiaxisymmetric stellarator configurations are explored. Calculations of equilibrium flux surfaces for candidate configurations are also presented. One optimization strategy is found to generate configurations with improved neoclassical confinement, simpler coils with lower current density, and improved flux surface quality relative to previous designs. The flux surface calculations find significant differences in the extent of islands and stochastic regions between candidate configurations. (These calculations do not incorporate the predicted beneficial effects of perturbed bootstrap currents.) A method is demonstrated for removing low order islands from candidate configurations by relatively small modifications of the configuration. Abstract

High-beta, low-aspect-ratio ("compact") stellarators are promising solutions to the problem of developing a magnetic plasma configuration for magnetic fusion power plants that can be sustained in steady state without disrupting. These concepts combine features of stellarators and advanced tokamaks and have aspect ratios similar to those of tokamaks (2-4). They are based on computed plasma configurations that are shaped in three dimensions to provide desired stability and transport properties. Experiments are planned as part of a program to develop this concept. A beta = 4% quasi-axisymmetric plasma configuration has been evaluated for the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX). It has a substantial bootstrap current and is shaped to stabilize ballooning, external kink, vertical, and neoclassical tearing modes without feedback or close-fitting conductors. Quasi-omnigeneous plasma configurations stable to ballooning modes at beta = 4% have been evaluated for the Quasi-Omnigeneous Stellarator (QOS) experiment. These equilibria have relatively low bootstrap currents and are insensitive to changes in beta. Coil configurations have been calculated that reconstruct these plasma configurations, preserving their important physics properties. Theory- and experiment-based confinement analyses are used to evaluate the technical capabilities needed to reach target plasma conditions. Abstract

It is known that NBI ion losses may pose a problem to the Wendelstein 7-X first wall, but the so-far utilized wall models had insufficient details for reproducing the locations and magnitude of the hot-spots. This study aims to exhaustively analyse the detailed wall loads in the reference magnetic configurations and in various plasma scenarios. The goal is to pinpoint the endangered plasma facing components and to calculate heat loads to them in preparation for the first NBI operations. Abstract

It is found that modes of Alfvénic character affected by plasma compressibility and having equal poloidal and toroidal mode numbers (named ‘isomon modes’) can exist in W7-X. These modes, and the conditions under which they arise, are sensitive to the magnitude of the rotational transform of the field lines and the presence of energetic ions. The energetic ions produced by neutral-beam injection (having the energy 55–60 keV) interact resonantly with large-scale isomon modes (), which tends to lead to instabilities extending over a large part of the plasma cross section. 23. Synthetic Mirnov diagnostic for the validation of experimental observations.

Abstract

A synthetic Mirnov diagnostic has been developed to investigate the capabilities and limitations of an arrangement of Mirnov coils in terms of a mode analysis. Eight test cases have been developed, with different coil arrangements and magnetic field configurations. Three of those cases are experimental configurations of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X. It is observed that, for a high triangularity of the flux surfaces, the arrangement of the coils plays a significant role in the exact determination of the poloidal mode number. For the mode analysis, torus and magnetic coordinates have been used. In most cases, the reconstruction of the poloidal mode number of a prescribed mode was found to be more accurate in magnetic coordinates. As an application, the signal of an Alfvén eigenmode, which has been calculated with a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics code, is compared to experimental observations at Wendelstein 7-X. Abstract

Research on magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasmas has the ultimate goal of harnessing nuclear fusion for the production of electricity. Although the tokamak 1 is the leading toroidal magnetic-confinement concept, it is not without shortcomings and the fusion community has therefore also pursued alternative concepts such as the stellarator. Unlike axisymmetric tokamaks, stellarators possess a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field geometry. The availability of this additional dimension opens up an extensive configuration space for computational optimization of both the field geometry itself and the current-carrying coils that produce it. Such an optimization was undertaken in designing Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) 2 , a large helical-axis advanced stellarator (HELIAS), which began operation in 2015 at Greifswald, Germany. A major drawback of 3D magnetic field geometry, however, is that it introduces a strong temperature dependence into the stellarator's non-turbulent 'neoclassical' energy transport. Indeed, such energy losses will become prohibitive in high-temperature reactor plasmas unless a strong reduction of the geometrical factor associated with this transport can be achieved; such a reduction was therefore a principal goal of the design of W7-X. In spite of the modest heating power currently available, W7-X has already been able to achieve high-temperature plasma conditions during its 2017 and 2018 experimental campaigns, producing record values of the fusion triple product for such stellarator plasmas 3,4 . The triple product of plasma density, ion temperature and energy confinement time is used in fusion research as a figure of merit, as it must attain a certain threshold value before net-energy-producing operation of a reactor becomes possible 1,5 . Here we demonstrate that such record values provide evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in W7-X, as the plasma profiles that produced these results could not have been obtained in stellarators lacking a comparably high level of neoclassical optimization., (© 2021. 26. Stellarators with Permanent Magnets.

Abstract

It is shown that the magnetic-field coils of a stellarator can, at least in principle, be substantially simplified by the use of permanent magnets. Such magnets cannot create toroidal magnetic flux, but they can be used to shape the plasma and thus to create poloidal flux and rotational transform, thereby easing the requirements on the magnetic-field coils. As an example, a quasiaxisymmetric stellarator configuration is constructed with only 8 circular coils (all identical) and permanent magnets.
